2024 Horror Challenge: [71/?]
↳“Why are you doing this?“ "Because you let me." Speak No Evil (2022) dir. Christian Tafdrup
Plot: A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.
Starring: Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Fedja van Huêt, Karina Smulders, Liva Forsberg & Marius Damslev
I've been meaning to watch this one for a while and I've been considering whether to watch the remake as well but it didn't feel right if I didn't at least see this one first so here we are. I needed to understand why they would feel the need to remake a movie that is only 2 years old beyond the sake of a cash grab situation. Now, I won't be able to have an answer until I after I watch the remake later on today (I want a little time between so it's not too fresh in my mind but just enough I can call out the obvious parallels I'm sure will be in there) but I'm hoping there will be some changes in the story a bit. Just because I really need these production companies to understand one thing - remakes/sequels, they should at least attempt to bring something new to the narrative in some way so that there's value in exploring it more. Anyway, about the actual movie, I enjoyed it, at least I think. lol That almost feels like a weird thing to say because it is sooo tense. It's very much a slowburn so a lot of it is just this sense of dread that something is gonna happen eventually but you don't know what. I'm sure it'll be a little too slow for some people, which I can understand, but it had me for most of it. I couldn't help feeling uncomfortable for the Danish couple being such fish out of water with the Dutch pair, which you know is very much the intention. And then it takes that turn in the end and I was like, wow, talk about bleak. I appreciated that there was a social commentary going on with the narrative. Even as an American, I could understand what was going on with that. I am curious how they handle that aspect in the remake since I did see that was one of the things people worried about. I did also notice it has a slightly higher IMDB rating than the original so maybe they did a good job with it after all. Like I said, we'll see. Overall, I thought this one was pretty good. Worth the watch imo.

Speak No Evil: the American remake for an awesome horror story
Speak No Evil is an upcoming American psychological horror-thriller film, which is a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name. The movie is directed and written by James Watkins and produced by Jason Blum through his Blumhouse Productions banner. The film stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Scoot McNairy. The story follows a family invited to spend a weekend in an idyllic country house, which turns into a psychological nightmare. The movie is rated R for some strong violence, language, some sexual content, and brief drug use. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 9, 2024, by Universal Pictures.
Speak No Evil is a 2022 Danish psychological horror-thriller film directed by Christian Tafdrup. The story follows a Danish family, Bjørn, Louise, and their daughter Agnes, who are invited to visit the remote home of a Dutch couple, Patrick and Karin, after briefly befriending them while on vacation. The family accepts the invitation and travels to the Dutch couple's rural house. However, things take a dark turn, and the idyllic weekend turns into a psychological nightmare. The film is known for its unsettling and terrifying portrayal of horror, which almost does its job too well. The movie premiered at the 38th Sundance Film Festival and was theatrically released in Denmark and the Netherlands. The film stars Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Fedja van Huêt, and Karina Smulders.

Speak No Evil ( a movie review)
“Speak No Evil” is not a movie for the weak and faint of morality. A gruesome and bone-chilling movie to watch, played by Morten Burrian as Bjorn, Karina Smulders as Karin, Fedja Van Huet as Patrick, and Sidsel Siem as Louise. The movie was released on March 1, 2022, and was directed by Christian Tafdrup in the genres of horror, thriller, psychological horror, and drama. It garnered an IMDB rating of 6.6/10. The scenes were shot in the Netherlands and Italy.
A Danish couple named Bjorn and Louise, together with their daughter Agnes, are on vacation in Tuscany. During their vacation, they met Patrick and Karin, a Dutch couple with their son Abel, who was born without a tongue and suffers from congenital Aglossia. Both families became friends throughout their stay at the place. Patrick offered Bjorn and his family the chance to come and visit their remote house in the Netherlands, and the couple agreed. In the first two days of their stay at Patrick's house, they have become skeptical because of the passive behavior of the couple. The host disregards the fact that Louise is vegetarian, and they take abusive actions towards Abel. One night, when Agnes was going to sleep, Patrick and Karin took her and let her sleep beside their naked bodies. This made the Danish couple uncomfortable, and they decided to live in the miserable house until dawn. They were on the road when Agnes cried loudly because she had left her rabbit doll, Ninus. So the couple went back to the house. Disappointed, the Dutch couple confronted Bjorn about his sudden decision to leave. Louise explained to them that the couple’s actions are becoming uncomfortable for them. Bjorn and Louise were convinced to stay. During the night, Bjorn wondered where Abel was, and she explored the hut in the backyard and saw many photos taken by Patrick and Karin with different children. He was shocked when he saw Abel dead and floating in a tub. This made him terrified, and he rushed his family to flee the house immediately. Throughout their escape, they unraveled what the Dutch family was doing with the children, and suddenly their child Agnes became a victim.
This movie has some of the best acting; they perfectly executed their lines, which inflicted the emotion on the viewers in a way that they wanted to show it. Even the child actors who played the children of the couples have quality acting that is not exaggerated. In a scene from the film Abel, played by Marius Damslev, when both families introduced each other, Abel was restrained from making expressions. This makes the opening scene mysterious, allowing viewers to construct various questions regarding the plot of the movie. Similarly, the setting of the movie is perfectly matched by the plot of the movie. The eerie-looking house of the Dutch family also gives a conundrum to the viewers and makes them ask why it has dark vibes and what the connection is to the overall plot of the story. Moreover, the script was written impressively; it is in a slow-burn state. The plot is unexpected and distinct compared to other psychological horror movies. All the characters were well written. After you have watched the film, you will ask yourself, How come they did nothing? And you will feel different emotions, such as annoyance toward the main characters, sadness, and curiosity.
Unfortunately, the movie is not for everybody. Since it includes brutal scenes that are inappropriate for children to watch. Viewer discretion must be advised in viewing this masterpiece.
The overall meaning of the film can open a lot of eyes in terms of trust. Which is relatable; for instance, nowadays people are too reliant on social media, and people can interact with different people and trust them since they have become close virtually. This film makes us realize that not everybody has good intentions for us; they might have the intention to take advantage of our vulnerability. Furthermore, in the film, “toxic masculinity” was emphasized. It was shown that men should dominate the house, and they only have the final say when it comes to family roles. On the first night of Bjorn and Louise's stay at Patrick’s house, Patrick forces Louise to eat meat, though she is a vegetarian.
For me, the movie is a must watch. It has a unique plot that is fresh in the eyes of the viewers, which makes it a masterpiece. It is a dark journey that competes with your emotions. The actors, the musical scoring, and the script were sophisticated. The movie talks about how far you can bestow your trust. And Are you going to surrender everything just to maintain civility? I wonder if it happens in real life.

Speak No Evil - A látogatás
Velük tart lányuk, Agnes is, aki a holland pár gyermekével, Abellel kb. egykorú.
