On this date in 1999 India successfully took command of the high outposts. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended on 26 July 1999, when the Pakistani army took advantage of the melting snow and - betraying the bilateral understanding of both the nations that the post would remain unattended during the winter season - took command of the high outposts of India. The Pakistani army denied involvement in the war, claiming that it was caused by independent Kashmiri rebel forces, however, documents left behind by casualties and later statements by Pakistan's Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showed involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces, led by General Ashraf Rashid. नई दिल्ली(realtimes) 20वां कारगिल विजय दिवस आज पूरे देश में उत्साह के साथ मनाया जा रहा है। भारतीय सेना ने कारगिल युद्ध में विजय हासिल कर पाकिस्‍तानी सेना के सैकड़ों जवानों को मार गिराया था। लेकिन इस युद्ध में भारत ने अपने 527 जवानों को खो दिया था जबकि 1363 जवान घायल हुए थे। चार भारतीय जवानों को इस युद्ध में अदम्य साहस के लिए सेना का सर्वोच्च पदक परमवीर चक्र प्रदान किया गया था।
