Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 110 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media
(Previously: Episodes 108-109 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-110: Tyranno Kenzan VS Fossil Dragon Jim
Jim Crocodile has noticed an outbreak of strong electromagnetic waves at the Duel Academia. Accompanied by Judai, Johan, Shou, and Kenzan, Jim decides to investigate in the jungle. As they do, some strong electromagnetic waves spring up, causing his crocodile Karen to pounce on Kenzan--and at the same time, the effects of the electromagnetic waves cause Kenzan to forget who he is and pounce on Jim.* This leads to Jim having a duel with Kenzan, and as Kenzan instinctively summons his powerful Dinosaur Monsters, Jim activates his Kaseki Yuugou -- Fossil Fusion Magic Card to summon his Fossil Dragons. *Worth noting that the pre-airing summary text here makes it sound like Karen biting Kenzan and Kenzan lunging for Jim both happened as they're looking around in the jungle, when in the episode proper, Karen biting Kenzan is what gets Jim onto the scene; wonder if that was the original idea in production...
[EDIT, 5/19: Episode reuploaded after correcting two of Cobra's lines near the end, and also fixing an animation error I missed initially with Kenzan's Disk near the end of the episode; details added below the cut.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*runs in to post this in Engrish*
Well, mates, episode 110 is now up and finalized! With Season 3 starting off with a couple of two-parters, I figured I'd take a slight breather and work on just 110 this go-round given the multiple two-parters on the way. And it's a good one, as we're introduced more to Jim Crocodile Cook (and his well-done Australian accent in the dub, for some kudos there to 4Kids [some dialogue choices for him (and Kenzan [that's not how Tail Swing works???]) aside]) while also seeing how quickly Judai seems to have recovered after his duel with O'Brien, and we see the debut of Jim's Fossils, which would go on to take a good 18 years or so before finally being printed with some buffs to them; it was always an archetype I liked. Kenzan also just spending a good 3-4 minutes growling was A+ (a shame the dub just made him talk semi-primitively, even if it mostly works), more of Jim's Engrish was just as good, and I liked how Jim and Kenzan came away with some respect for each other by the end after how offended Kenzan was by the Fossil Fusion concept. Fun times!
Animation error-wise, like with 108-109, I mostly did some quality-of-watching touch-ups around split-screens (with some of the fixes I did also allowing me to get rid of some of the ghosting in the footage), though there two card fixes I applied with Kenzan. Details below under the cut as always for the interested!
Quick housekeeping: in case you missed it, I re-released my finalized episode 1 work, as I went back and applied various card fixes that were bugging me and that I've grown to be able to fix, lol. Still shook I first started finalizing everything in 2014... 💀 Currently, I don't anticipate going back to re-finalize anything pre-84, mostly due to the annoyance of cutting/splicing stuff to get around not having the original unreleased scripts I'd keep with the ATK/DEF counter subs and whatnot thanks to a 2022 data drive failure, and hopefully it stays that way. 😅 I also applied a few minor styling fixes to the ending credit subs for 105 and 108 (noticed the text for a few names in the cast lists were scaled inconsistently) and reuploaded those; rereleased episode 1 has been posted on NAC, while re-finalized 105 and 108 will be posted there with 110.
Anywho, enjoy! I'll likely be going back to some TFSP stuff for a bit (in case you missed that news~) and then I'll dip into episodes 111-112 and Manjoume VS Amon; stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits!
As Jim first activates Fossil Fusion, we see the card first before he fades in holding it, but his thumb is missing as his fade-in starts, and then it just appears, fully faded-in, in the next frame even though the rest of him is still fading in. I fixed this in Sony Vegas by masking out his thumb and adding it to the first frame in which Jim starts fading in, then making his thumb fade in with the rest of him.
Later, as Kenzan thinks Dark Driceratops bested Jim's Skullgar, Skullgar turns around and defeats it, causing Kenzan some damage; as he reacts while his LP drop, Jim slides in on a split-screen exclaiming "Bravo!", but his split-screen slide-in starts with his split already about 50% into the shot. After that, Jim sets one card face-down and ends his turn, and as Kenzan opens his eyes and starts to growl while the split-screen ends, Jim's split starts to slide out the frame after Kenzan starts to move. Fixed the first in Sony Vegas by re-doing his slide-in to be more natural and start closer to the edge of the screen, then fixed the second by just removing the one frame where Kenzan has moved but Jim hasn't so that they move simultaneously, holding a frame once the split-screen's over a frame longer to compensate.
As #2 here leads into Kenzan taking offense at how Jim woke his dinosaur out of its sleep to use as a piece for Jim's fossil "freak," he says he'll make Jim pay for that as their match gets going for real; Judai and co look on as Jim and Kenzan stare each other down on a split-screen leading to the eyecatch (the split-screen here cut from the dub, likely for time), but Jim's split slides in unevenly compared to Kenzan's. Fixed in Vegas by redoing his split's slide-in so they both slide in evenly.
Later, after Jim uses Dowsing Burn to take out Sabersaurus, Kenzan reacts as Jim slides in on a split-screen to declare his Sample Fossil summoning, but Jim's split starts to slide in with it already about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in to make it slide in more naturally, while also redoing Kenzan moving in the background to eliminate the ghosting during this split-screen's forming.
A bit after #4, Jim uses Sample Fossil to dig up Sabersaurus from Kenzan's Cemetery to make a specimen out of it, and as we see its chains working to drag its remains up from the ground, we see Kenzan still has Sabersaurus on his Disk despite it being in his Cemetery. Fixed this first in Photoshop by cleaning up the Monster Zone in question on the shot's first frame, then threw the fixed frame into Vegas, where I then shook it along with the screen for the rest of the shot, also slightly zooming it out and fading it out as the transition from Kenzan into the dug-up Sabersaurus happens.
Shortly after, as Jim taunts Kenzan about his lovely Sabersaurus specimen, Kenzan growls in response; Jim then slides in on a split-screen to say that Sample Fossil's ATK becomes equal to Sabersaurus's, but his split again starts to slide in with 50% of it already in the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in so it slides in more naturally, and redoing Kenzan moving to again eliminate some footage ghosting.
A bit later, Kenzan activates his Treasure of Variation card, and as the close-up shot on it transitions into a split-screen splitting apart to show Kenzan behind it explaining its effect, each side of the split-screen jitters slightly in the frame before it properly starts to split apart. Fixed this in Vegas by holding the earlier frame over the jittering frame so that it properly splits apart in the next frame.
After Kenzan's next turn, as Jim wonders if the electromagnetic waves aren't behind Judai and co's exhaustion, he draws another Fossil Fusion; he smiles upon seeing it, but his smile ends up being slightly drawn onto his eye bandages. Fixed this in Vegas by just masking the eye bandages over it to keep his smile off the bandages.
(continued below due to Tumblr's dumb characters-per-block-of-text limit)
(9) After Kenzan's Brachion switches into Defense Mode from Jim summoning Skullgios, Jim is impressed by its 3000 DEF; Kenzan slides in on a split-screen to think that there's no way he can hold off an attack from Skullgios, but his split only starts to slide in the frame after Jim starts to move for it, and with it starting about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing Kenzan's slide-in to start as Jim moves and slide in more naturally.
(10) As Jim has Skullgios pause its attack on Brachion, Kenzan looks up and wonders why, but as he does, we see that Brachion is on his Disk in Attack Mode despite it just going into Defense Mode. Fixed first in Photoshop as I blanked the Monster Zone in the first frame of the shot, then took it into AfterEffects to add a proxy in Defense Mode, and then took the fixed frame into Vegas to re-pan into the footage, masking in Brachion as it starts to cover the Zone up.
[EDIT, 5/19] (11) After Jim and Kenzan are drained of their Duel Energy, Kenzan shudders for a second or two before falling to his knees panting, but as he does, the end of his Disk (on our right) isn't fully drawn in for the five frames of movement that takes (each lasting 2-4 frames), though it comes back near the end of the shot. As noted here, fixed this first in Photoshop by using one of the initial frames as reference to snip out the end of his Disk and adjust it into place for three of the five movement frames, while I just painted in what was missing for the last two; once done, I threw the fixed frames into Sony Vegas and re-panned them to complete the fix.
   …What was he doing?
   Based on his covert observations from up on the second floor of the dorm looking out over the grassy acres it belonged to, Manjoume had concluded that it was clearly Karen’s playtime but he wasn’t actually sure what game was being played. If it was a game at all. It involved a ball but it didn’t look like an actual ball game. Maybe drills? Some kind of practice?
   Bah, it didn’t matter. He had much better things to do with his time than to watch Jim and his dumb crocodile punt a ball between each other. Surely. Yup, surely, he had something better to do. Like rearrange the dust on his windowpane or something. He was on top of his studies, his deck was as peak as it was going to get, he was certain…
    And, yet, there was not much else to occupy Manjoume in his eight by eight room that he would love to claim that he had all to himself but very much didn’t thanks to the three Ojama Brother spirits who cohabited with him. So, mostly against his will, his brain bricked with boredom, Manjoume kept hovering by the windowsill.
   “If ya wanna play, why don’t ya jus’ go down there an’ play, boss?” Ojama Yellow asked.
   “I don’t want to play some dumb game with Jim.” Manjoume huffed, cheeks going red and his body very much going a different direction to what he had said.
   Ojama Yellow snickered with his brethren as they farewelled Manjoume as he marched himself down the wooden steps and right over to where Jim and Karen were situated. He looked down his nose at the pair as they passed the pointed egg shaped ball between each other, Jim using his hand and Karen batting it back with her tail. Manjoume held himself to make himself look intimidating but based on the blank stare that Jim was giving from underneath his Akubra, it wasn’t working.
   “What’s up?” Jim asked.
   “Not much.” Manjoume replied stiffly.
   The breeze swirled between them and the silence.
   “Did you… need something?”Jim asked.
   “Grawr.” Karen piped up, seemingly annoyed that Jim had halted her very important playtime.
   “Er, just wanted to know what you were up to, I guess.” Manjoume admitted but he sounded like he was pulling teeth.
   “Just… passin’ the footy ‘round. You want in?” Jim asked.
   “The footy?” Manjoume echoed.
   “Yeah, the footy.” Jim replied and he held up the ball a little higher.
   It was branded to a sports team that Manjoume didn’t recognise but even if he was familiar with the intricacies of Australia’s big teams, it was faded as all hell, too. He could barely make out anything beyond vague lettering and what was probably a diamond shape once.
   “You ever played footy before?” Jim asked and he started to get keen a bit, shook out his shoulders and if Manjoume didn’t know any better, he would describe his eyes as having a gleam of national pride.
   “Do Australians call it football or soccer?” Manjoume said.
   “We call it soccer but footy’s different to soccer and different again to football, if you're imagining the American one, anyway, we call that gridiron and don’t play it much. And it's different again to rugby, if that’s what you're familiar with, but we do like a bit of rugby but I like footy best. Or, y’know, Aussie rules, if you know it by that name.”
   “You are not speaking any language I know.” Manjoume replied after Jim’s little spiel on the intricacies of sport down under and elsewhere.
   “It's easy, promise.” Jim said. “Just don’t let the ball hit the ground, pass from the side, and since it's your first time playing, we won’t be playing tackle. We’ll play touch, instead, its non-contact, instead, you gotta grab at, uh… gimme a second, I’ve got some hankies we can use.”
   Manjoume watched, puzzled, as Jim made the absolute bare minimum and honestly confusing attempt to explain the rules - and prepare him for the game. He tore in half a pair of handkerchiefs that he was carrying around and gave two strips to Manjoume, who accepted very limply, and the other. He hooked them around his belt hooks, not too tight, Manjoume noticed. All he knew was that his ears pricked up at “touch” and “non-contact” for some reason - and good reason, too, as Jim had a bit more to say on the topic.
   “You're a bit… delicate so this’ll work well for ya.” Jim said.
   “Hey.” Manjoume growled. “I’m not delicate. We can play tackle.”
   “Nah, let’s start with tag, I wouldn’t want to see you get hurt, is all.” Jim said.
   Manjoume’s brow furrowed further, “No, I’m tough, I can totally play tackle.”
   “Alright then big guy, bowl me over. Knock me down. Do it.” Jim coaxed Manjoume, cockily tilting his chin up.
   “I will.” Manjoume replied and without warning, he was straight at Jim.
   Jim, however, was practically yawning. He played with a crocodile for Christ’s sake, no way was the living toothpick which was Manjoume going to knock him over but good on him for trying and he was trying hard. He was grunting and groaning, pushing into Jim’s breast as hard as he could, kicking up dirt clouds behind as all he moved was just his breath. Jim, meanwhile, was rock hard and standing still as a statue.
   “Point proven yet or do you need some more time?” Jim asked.
   “Argh, fine.” Manjoume gave up.
   His hackles went up and he folded his arms crossly. He stared intently as he waited for Jim to explain more of the rules to this touch-tag Aussie rules footy thing.
    “So, the goal is to get the footy across the line to score a point and the other goal is to get me out by taking my tags.” Jim said and he placed the ball on the ground. “When you get my tags, or if I get yours, we pause, we go back to where it happened and do one of these ones.”
   Jim demonstrated what he meant by “one of these ones”. He put his foot on top of the ball, very softly kicked it maybe half an inch behind him and then picked it up. He tapped it against his foot, as well. It seemed like a very odd ritual but Manjoume shrugged.
   “Normally, when you have a team, you pass it back and someone’s behind you to pick it up but for us, this’ll do to slow down the pace of the game. Oh, and if it happens three times, ball switches hands.”
   “Right, got it.” Manjoume replied, chewing on it.
   “Clear as mud, yeah?” Jim laughed. “Let’s get into it then, you’ll pick it up better playing.”
   “Okay.” Manjoume replied, still chewing on all his vowels.
   He glanced at Karen who opened her maw at him then closed it noiselessly. She seemed okay with watching them play rather than participating. But Manjoume felt very awkward about playing a sport he’d never played before.
   Still, he and Jim lined each other up and Jim tossed the ball in the air. Whoever got it, got it. It went up, up, up, and Manjoume scrambled to catch it but with his taller stature and longer limbs, and his experience playing the game as well, Jim managed to catch the ball.
   He hooked it under his arm and he took off. It was only then that Manjoume realised he had no idea where the boundaries or how long the field they were playing in was but Jim was booking it - and so he was, too. He scrambled after Jim but it was too late.
   At just the edge of the schoolyard, Jim dunked the ball down and proclaimed he’d scored a point. It pissed Manjoume off,  of course, but at the same time. The red in his cheeks wasn’t just from running full pelt for basically no reason out of nowhere and same for how his heart raced. Jim just looked so effortless playing this sport,  how he grinned, it was absolutely cheeky. The tags hanging off his belt flapped victoriously as he showboated.
   “Let’s try again.” Jim beamed.
   “Yeah.” Manjoume huffed.
   They both circled back to where they had started the game. Karen, at the sidelines, thrashed her tail around and growled, happy that her friend was in the lead but her guttural cries inspired Manjoume. He had to do better this time. He just had to. And so, he absolutely had a fire in his belly for what follows.
   Jim punted the football upwards into the air again and Manjoume tried his hardest to get it. He brought all his weight down and jumped up as high as he could - and he felt like he could touch the sky. The sun blinding in his eyes, the salty sweat on his brow. His fingers just brushed the texture of the football but Manjoume didn’t bring it home. He just missed.
   “Unlucky.” Jim taunted him as he once again won the one-on-one scrum.
   He was laughing as Manjoume turned around, skidding on his heel. He full-on bolted. All he could see was the white, dangling fabrics of the tags flying off Jim’s belt loops. And so, he went for it.
   Hard.
   Even though they had established before playing that Manjoume was a twig and Jim was basically a brick wall, he went for it. He smashed into Jim from behind, grabbing the tags, practically frothing at the mouth for them as he tried to pull them off.
   It was a glorious few seconds for Manjoume. Blood pounded in his head. He felt the spirit of sportsmanship deep in the bowels of his soul. He was going to win. Or, bare minimum, he was going to make the point score one all.
    Manjoume’s arms swung wide. He made his stance low and as powerful as he could. He felt like a raging bull, tail swishing and horns glinting all the same as if they had been real. He crash-tackled into Jim and Jim crumpled. Manjoume hugged him tight around his waist, his head butted Jim’s chest and knocked the wind out of him.
   At impact, Jim twisted the wrong way. His eyes opened wide and frantic. He lost footing and went down so, so slowly it felt. Manjoume grappled him wildly. Hands went everywhere in the effort to find the tags which were attached to Jim’s belt loops. Victoriously, at the end of such a crash, Manjoume did it.
   He ripped free the torn in half hankies and it was glorious.
   For all the couple seconds where it mattered before both landed with a thud.
   Karen lifted her head briefly and blinked. The noise disturbed the grass and caused a dust cloud to bloom up around them. Jim and Manjoume both groaned as dizziness descended upon them, heavy like a cloak.
   Manjoume had Jim pinned underneath him. The position was compromising. Manjoume had one leg in between Jim’s and the other over Jim’s left leg. He’d taken all the fall on his knees and wrists, the jarring sensation wracked all of him, competing - and winning - over the brewing embarrassment as Jim looked up at him. Surprised. Fully aware of everything with a slackened jaw.
   “What the hell…?” Jim exclaimed in disbelief. “Where the devil were you keeping that, boy?”
   Manjoume’s stare turned intense as his eleventh hour determination began to dawn on him. Jim looked so spindly and vulnerable underneath him, long and lanky body with outdoorsy musculature which strained his grass-stain proofed clothes. He swallowed thickly and felt Jim’s eyes watched, a little too carefully, as his larynx bobbed up and down in his throat.
   Manjoume raked his fingers through the dirt. This was… This was a bit much for someone who wasn’t hugged enough as a kid, Manjoume realised.
   “Oh, uh, sorry.” Manjoume stammered and he scrambled off the top of Jim. Heart racing.
   Manjoume was awkward and gawky, trying too hard to be fast and that slowed him down. He got there in the end but pummelled Jim first as Manjoume reefed himself back and sat in the grass. His coat flounced as he stopped.
   “Er, good game, I guess?” Jim offered as he peeled himself off the ground. He didn’t look at Manjoume as he smacked dirt and grass off himself. “You seemed tuckered out.”
   “Yeah, that took everything out of me.” Manjoume replied.
   Jim smirked and then faced Manjoume forward. He offered his hand to shake.
   “Draw?” Jim suggested. “Not a total wooden spooner if we’re evens-Stephens.”
   “Yeah, sure.” Manjoume agreed.
   He resolved to return Jim’s handshake upon the invitation. If a little reluctantly as he had all sorts of feelings about the climax of their match. Endorphins made his teenage angst fuzzy as he took his sweet time to shake Jim’s hand.
   His blood droned in his ears as he realised, he was back to the start. Watching Jim a little too carefully for it to be platonic interest. Manjoume hurried up. To get it over and done with even though before he even slid his hand against Jim’s palm, he knew he wouldn’t want to let go afterwards.
   Jim didn’t say a word waiting on Manjoume to hurry up before he finally did. Jim’s hand was firm and calloused. Manjoume’s was flimsy by comparison but he did his best to match the energy of well meaning sportsmanship that Jim was offering him.
   They shook on it but both took a little bit too long to let go.
Still trying to get used to tumblr again, here’s a temp pinned post until I get sorted out. 😂
Hi, I’m Maxi! They/she, 21+
This is a side blog, if I follow you it’s from my main @thetictactician (that account is mainly ffxiv and non-fandom oc content)
YGO centric stuff here but I might be inclined to rb or post stuff from similar-ish franchises like Beyblade. :3
All art I post is my own and drawn by me unless explicitly stated otherwise on said post.
There will be OCs here. I’m not ship heavy but OCXcanon will be present (mostly MaixTomo and other lesbian ships!! 😘)
I’m very vanilla, there won’t be anything spicy here. Not into that with these kinda fandoms at all. (Yeah ok the Harpie Ladies have sexy outfits, but I mean like intentional sexual content not just outfits lol.)
I do like quite a few (not oc) ships but I’m not majorly into any so I probably won’t be drawing them myself.
I love DM, ZeXal, GX and VRAINs (not finished watching VRAINS yet tho)
I like 5Ds and Arc-V but only surface level simply because I’ve not watched them yet. I will. One day.
I predominantly use sub/jp names bc that’s the language I watch in. Only know dub names from the DM era and some GX from childhood/ Yugioh abridged LOL
Fave charas include Mai, Anzu, Ishizu, Mokuba, Kaiba, Karen & Jim, Asuka, Manjoume, Yuuma & Astral, Anna, Cathy, Kotori… uh yeah anyway there’s more but then I’ll be here all day
This got long and rambly fast so I’ll stop here. 😂
Episode 140.
It wasn't as clear in the previous episode, but Supreme King Judai uses the darker recolors of Elemental HEROes, just as Edo did in Season 2.
While the Duel continues on, Sho rescues a mother, and a child. Daughter tries to convince Sho to remain with them, but Sho is determined to watch Judai.
When Judai exerts his pressure, his eyes glow.
While Austin wonders what to do, and Sho continues on his trip to the castle, Jim has a flashback of digging fossils while talking to Judai.
Jim attempts another miracle with comet's power, and realizes that Supreme King has been covering Judai's heart, so his voice wasn't reaching to him. Sad Duel plays.
After Lightning Golem's Summon, Jim tries to pull a miracle for a third time, then a fourth time for a Miracle Draw.
Gaia Plate's attack causes Judai to experience a brief shock. However, Judai activates Super Polymerization.
Karen tries to protect Jim from Dark Gaia's attack, but Jim puts her down. With Jim defeated, his memory inside Judai disappears.
Karen disappears, then Jim, leaving only his Duel Disk, and orichalcum eye. Austin takes the eye, from which Jim pleads to Austin to save Judai, but Austin runs away.
The final shot of the episode Sho, and Ojama Yellow looking at the mayhem, and the comet continuing on.
*****
Dark Gaia normally requires Dark Fusion, though its animé effect also allows for Super Polymerization. In the OCG, this inconsistency has led to the introduction of Supreme King's Castle Field Spell, which allows Fusion Spells to be treated as Dark Fusion, allowing all Fusion Spells to be used to Summon Evil HEROes.
This would not work with GX era rules, where only one Field Spell could be activated at the time (Jim activated Sacred Defense Barrier during this Duel), but this works with post-ARC-V rule changes.
Super Polymerization not having any counters is not an effect, but rather a ruling, special to this specific card.
Super Polymerization has its Summoning chant of sorts, which might lead to the creation of new Spell/Traps based on that.
Since Jim's VA will leave in S4, this is the last Duel in the Series for him. This is not his last voiced appearance, though.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 113-114 Subbed (Finalized) - Fixes/Edits Breakdown
Since it’s 2024 and Tumblr still has a dumb link limit in posts, I’ve made this separate post supplementing my 113-114 Release Post with my usual animation fix/edit breakdown for the interested, since I did still want to give folks a more visual idea as I’ve been doing. Details below the cut!
Fixes and Edits! (113)
As mentioned in the Release Post and highlighted here, I took the bio Echo sends Amon about O'Brien and translated it (even worked on a dub version for reasons, too). The text in the red box still couldn't be made out even with the clearer shot Zichs sent me, so that was left as-is.
As Amon works to sneak into the SAL research lab to find Cobra, he uses his special spy glass (scouter?) to identify the trip lasers set up around it; once he does, he says it's child play now that he knows about them, but as he narrows his eyes to smile and say his line, his head staying still, a quick flicker of shading pops up that doesn't last once he does. I fixed this using Photoshop to remove it, using Sony Vegas to mix the fixed frame into the footage.
Later, once Judai and the gang get to the ground floor of the giant area under the SAL lab, they all decide to split into two groups to find Cobra--as they head out, they all join a split-screen to "shout really loud at the same time," as the dub put it, but two of their splits start sliding into the shot a frame before the rest join. I fixed this in Photoshop to make them start at the same time by just holding the previous no-split frame over this one.
A bit later, on the Jim/Kenzan/Asuka side, as Karen starts to wiggle in response to a threat closing in, Jim gets Asuka and Kenzan to wonder why Cobra would hide in a place like this, saying that it's because of the natural defenses it has in place to keep intruders from getting too close--but the shot as he does so starts off with a few frames of Jim's open mouth from later in the shot being superimposed over the initial movement frames as he shifts his head downward to speak, in two of them over his closed mouth and in one with his mouth semi-open. Fixed the three movement frames in Photoshop, painting over his open mouth in the first frame, redrawing his semi-open mouth over the open mouth along with painting over it with skin in the second, and painting over the open mouth and redrawing his closed mouth in the third. (On the bright side, it does make you think of Jim with a mustache...)
During the eyecatch, as Judai slides across the screen towards the right, an odd coloring error happens along his shirt and left shoulder as some red lingers on it from the rapid pan across the screen. Fixed in Vegas by redoing Judai's pan across using a later frame, masking the final shirt and shoulder out on top of him.
Later, as the Judai/Satou duel gets underway, Satou starts by summoning his Scab Scarknight, but does so by playing his card upside-down on his Duel Disk. Fixed in AfterEffects by placing a proxy right-side-up as he plays it and lighting it up as the original card gets brighter, layering a green solid layer as a screen on top to retain some of the green coloring for part of it, then applied motion tracking to move it along the screen as it pans up to Scab Scarknight.
Right after #6, Judai stares Scab Scarknight and Satou down, noting mentally that he has zero ATK, but an error happens here as the light that should be in the orb on Satou's Disk is instead on top of his fourth Monster Zone where Scarknight would be. Fixed this first in Photoshop by first coloring in some red over the Disk orb, then by redrawing the fourth Monster Zone there, as well as coloring in some black over the lingering outer glow of the red light along Scarknight's leg; once that was done, I used AE to put the Scarknight proxy into place in that redrawn zone.
A few seconds later, Judai starts his turn and takes a look at his hand, but an error happens here as he has Sparkman there next to his Cocoon Larva; 114 would show that he instead has Spark Gun, as Sparkman gets summoned using Hero Signal (surprisingly, the dub missed this). Fixed for consistency using AfterEffects by placing a Spark Gun proxy there for a frame at the end of the panning on the shot, and also masking the edges of Featherman's card on top; once done, I took the frame into Photoshop, where I added more of an outline along the edge of Featherman's card for blending, then threw the final frame back into AE where I used motion tracking to re-do the panning and move the fix across the screen.
(9) A bit later, as Satou uses Scab Scarknight's Scab Curse effect to snatch up Burstlady, we see Burstlady descending onto Satou's field, but two errors happen: 1) Burstlady's missing her shoulder strap, and 2) the Burstlady and Scarknight cards on Satou's Disk are black rectangles. Fixed the cards first using AE, slapping my Burstlady and Scarknight proxies into place and applying motion tracking to move them along the screen as the shot pans; once done, I exported that and grabbed the eight movement frames of Burstlady descending down, which I edited in Photoshop to add in her missing strap, and then mixed them into the footage using Sony Vegas by repositioning each frame as she descends and the shot pans.
(10) A bit later, Satou has Burstlady attack Judai, but there's a quick frame as she swings her arm around to fire her Burstfire where she's missing her shoulder strap connecting to her arm cuff. Fixed in Photoshop by adding it in, then mixing it into the footage using Vegas.
(11) After that attack drops Judai's LP, Satou sets a card and ends his turn, but Burstlady's missing her shoulder strap again. Fixed in Photoshop by adding it in, then mixing it into the footage in Vegas by masking the fix out over the shot.
(12) As Judai then starts his next turn, he looks at his hand as he considers that he can't take more attacks, but a repeat of #8 happens as he still has Sparkman next to Cocoon Larva. Fixed for consistency with 114 similarly to #8, applying a Spark Gun proxy in Sparkman's place in one frame after the pan across the screen, masking Featherman's card over it, and taking the frame into Photoshop to add an outline to the edge of Featherman's card border for blending; once done, I took the fixed frame into AE to then apply motion tracking to re-do the pan across the screen. (Side-note: motion tracking is proving to be really useful for these card edits!)
(13) As Satou tells Judai that Scab Scarknight will negate all Life-regaining effects, Judai slides in on a split-screen to react in shock, but Satou starts to move a frame before Judai's split starts to slide in. Fixed this in Vegas by just holding the frame prior so that his moving and Judai's split slide-in happen together.
(14) A few seconds later, Satou uses Demandman's effect to force Air Hummingbird into Attack Mode, but as Demandman's claws/grappling hooks? reach Air Hummingbird, we see his card on Judai's Disk shown as a black rectangle. Fixed this while prepping the preview for 113 in 112, using AE to add in a proxy over the black rectangle as Judai moves while the grappling hooks close in, masking in the cables to them over it as they wiggle around.
(15) After Demandman succeeds in putting Air Hummingbird into Attack Mode, Satou activates Scarknight's Scab Curse effect; as we get a long shot of the field, with Satou telling Judai that any Attack-Mode Monster must attack Scarknight, Burstlady's shown without her shoulder strap. Fixed using Photoshop to redraw it in, then masking in the fix over the shot in Vegas.
(16) A few seconds later, as Air Hummingbird flies over to Satou's field under the Scab Curse, we see Judai mouthing something but not audibly saying anything; if I had to guess, he was supposed to yell, "Air Hummingbird!", but they didn't have KENN record it (the dub also doesn't have Jaden saying anything, but they keep his mouth moving). Fixed this in Vegas by holding Judai's mouth closed, masking some of Air Hummingbird's wing as needed while he's moving past it. [add gifs]
(17) As Air Hummingbird descends onto Satou's field, an error happens with Burstlady, who's missing her shoulder strap but has her shoulder colored like it. Fixed this in Photoshop by first recoloring her shoulder to her skin color, then adding in the shoulder strap/arm cuff combo.
(18) In the preview for 114, as we see Satou reacting to an attack from Sparkman, he activates a face-down Trap, but for a few quick frames as he swings his Disk arm, he has Sparkman on his Disk where Burstlady should still be. Fixed this in 114 proper first and then applied the fix here, using AE to slap a Burstlady proxy into place for the frames needed, and applying motion tracking to keep it in place as one of the movement frames zooms out for three total frames.
Fixes and Edits! (114)
After being called out on his sleeping through class by Satou, Judai is taken aback, saying that he gets how bad that was, but doesn't see it as a big deal; Satou slides in on a split-screen to tell him it is important, but Judai moves and turns for the slide-in a few frames before Satou's split starts to slide in--fixed this in Vegas by making Satou start to slide in as Judai starts to move. Then, once Satou says that, he moves and "pushes" Judai off the split-screen, but a bit too much so as it turns out; Judai ends up quite separated from his split's border as Satou's side expands. Fixed this latter error in Vegas again, redoing Judai's split moving to keep his position steady.
After Satou notes that Judai should've been a role model for the Academia, Judai mocks the idea, saying that he just does what he wants, but Satou slides in on a split-screen to tell him that "great power comes with great responsibility--" but Judai moves a frame before Satou's split starts to slide in. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing Satou's slide-in to sync with Judai's moving. Then, after he says that, an error happens as the two start to split apart where Judai in his previous pre-split-out position is still behind them and not the shot of the field being transitioned to. Also fixed this in Vegas by masking in the next shot of the field between them.
A bit later, after Judai summons Sailorman, Satou takes his turn and has Burstlady attack him, but she's missing the shoulder strap part of her strap/arm cuff combo again. Fixed in Photoshop in one frame as she jumps up, adding in the strap, then in AE as I took that frame and applied motion tracking to move it upward into place before masking out the fix on top of the footage.
After the eyecatch, as Johan and Shou find out that the power's gone out (thanks to Amon), Johan resolves to meet up with Judai and find Cobra, but as he shifts his head down to smile, the light and dark parts of the one bang over his right ear shift places for the rest of the shot, while no other part of his hair changes. Fixed for consistency in Photoshop, editing the coloring on the bang to keep the shading on his right side as it had been.
Later, as Judai attacks with Sparkman, Satou moves to activate his face-down Victim Barrier Trap Card, but for a few frames as he swings his arm, we see Sparkman on his Disk where Burstlady should be. As noted for the instance in 113, I fixed this error here first, using AfterEffects to put a Burstlady proxy into place as needed.
A few shots later, once Burstlady takes the hit for Scarknight due to Victim Barrier's effect, Satou explains that it also activates Scarknight's Scab Curse effect, causing a black aura to swirl around him before he fires scabs at Sparkman, but the aura isn't fully drawn, stopping partway down Scarknight's legs and leaving no aura for the rest of the video frame. Fixed this in Vegas by slightly cropping the shot to crop out the part where the aura isn't drawn in.
A bit later, as Satou takes his next turn, he switches Scab Scarknight from Defense to Attack Mode, but the card on his Disk is already in Attack Mode; usually, with Mode-switches in GX, the card is still in the original Mode for the shot where it happens, and then it would be in the new Mode in subsequent shots. Accordingly, fixed this by first using Photoshop to blank that Monster Zone for the few frames it's visible in, then using AE to add a Scarknight proxy in Defense Mode.
(8) Probably the big one here for me: after summoning Neos, Judai has him attack Scarknight, but Satou activates his face-down Scab Scream Trap Card, which [mostly unexplained] lets him send his Scarknight to his Cemetery to destroy Neos and summon Crying Scarknight, but after telling Judai that he won't lose to someone as bereft of darkness in his heart as he, the card we see glowing as its effect activates here is... Scab Scarknight? This actually should be Scab Scream, as I detailed here; I'm a bit surprised it wasn't caught for the DVD, and the dub didn't pick up on this either. After some research on trying to recreate the lighting effect on the card and some playing around, I fixed this using AE to put my Scab Scream proxy into place, applying a Light Rays effect and tweaking it some across a few layers to keyframe a glow along the middle of the card extending outward over the rest of it. Not as 1:1 a lighting/glow replacement as I'd have liked, but it works pretty well with the SFX here. Once I had the replaced card and extended glow worked on for the duration of the shot between it and the fade into Scarknight, I took it into Vegas where I faded in Scarknight by looping part of his shot and fading the card fix into it.
(9) A bit later, as Judai asks if Crying Scarknight is Scab Scarknight's true form, Satou slides in on a split-screen to confirm it--but as they split apart for him to explain how he would keep battling with everyone's hopes weighing on him, there's a quick frame as they start to where Judai's side doesn't get a border as he moves, and the next shot of Crying Scarknight being transitioned into doesn't start to appear between them; both are fixed as of the following frame. Fixed in Vegas by first redoing their split-screen to have Judai positioned where he is on his side as the split-out happens (given that the split-screen originally has him positioned a bit closer to the border, and as the split-out happens he's positioned a little further to the right and stays there as he slides out), then adding a border and masking in Crying Scarknight slightly as they begin their split-out.
(10) As we flash back to Satou dueling himself and his Crying Scarknight into exhaustion (one of their opponents looking like a recolored Ethan Shark from the KCGP in DM), there's a linear blur applied to the flashback around the video frame, but a few shots during it have that blur missing--namely, the shot of the one duelist in a green tux using King of Yamimakai backing up in fear as Satou summons Crying Scarknight, the shot as Scarknight destroys all of his Monsters, and then the shot later as a collapsed and now awake Satou looks around to see Scab Scarknight shielding him, and the last shot of the flashback zooming out on Scarknight. Fixed these four shots in Vegas by applying a linear blur along the edges of all four clips (by duplicating the clips into a second layer, applying the blur, and then cutting out the middle with a negative mask so that the unblurred layer under would appear).
(11) After the flashback, Judai summons his Cocoon Larva, setting a card face-down to end his turn, but as he moves his Disk to set his card, his Disk is incompletely drawn for the initial two movement frames as it comes into view, as the edge to Judai's left is missing. Fixed both in Photoshop by drawing that edge in, throwing the fixed frames into Vegas and mixing them into the footage by repositioning them as the screen pans.
(12) In the next-episode preview for 115, we see a clip of Johan getting into position to draw, but his third Monster Zone on his Disk isn't drawn in for the two movement frames we see it in (about 6-8 frames altogether), causing the whooshing background behind him to be visible there. Fixed in 115 proper first before masking in the fix here, using Photoshop to draw in the Monster Zone in the two frames needed, re-adding a faint red glow over the edit from the orb on Johan's Disk.
