So that #Syrin the Dread Blade tag, thats a new one. Seems like a interesting character, a sentient sword, how did Tyler happen upon them? What does the sword look like, and does it have any special magical abilities? How do they like the other members of the party? Do they actually speak or do they have a telepathic voice?

Technically it's just a tagging misconception; I haven't tagged Syrin reliably before because his nature as a sword does mean he's kind of attached to Taylor. But he is his own dude!

A short primer: magic items in this setting tend towards a level of awareness. Magic is essentially what souls are made of, ergo, if you stuff enough magic in anything, it starts to have a soul, and behaves accordingly. Entities as fully developed and chatty as Syrin are rare; far more common is that magic items tend to feel just a little bit haunted, inclined towards some things and away from others. It's a bit creepy if you're not used to it; enchantments are commonplace and widely accessible, so that 'not being used to it' is more a statement on if the individual is used to handling a particular thing.

Syrin himself is the ostensible opus of the previous Lord of Darkness, a Dark Sword that was meant to contest and cancel out the legendary sword of light wielded by the hero. Ostensibly, because for unknown reasons Syrin was left in storage the eve of the fateful battle. Being groomed exclusively for this purpose by someone he regarded as a father and then abandoned for ten years definitely wasn't traumatic or terrifying for someone with the cognitive level of a child, we promise. Especially since Syrin needs to eat.

Syrin's construction, and what leads Taylor to point out he's a bit like a 'needle', is a crystal-bladed thrusting sword with a hollow core. Despite its delicate looks, the blade is actually both quite sharp and highly durable; the thin tube at the center being essentially his mouth, by which he is supposed to drink blood. His victims', if he can get it, or, failing that, magically drawn from his host. As a result his blade itself ranges from grayish translucence to dark red if he's gorged to fullness.

From there, he has the power to generate and shape a kind of magical flesh, allowing him to weave more elaborate forms around his core body, the sword.

As you can guess, this gives Syrin a somewhat unpleasant and brutish first impression on people, as he has no verbal filters, was raised by a would-be conqueror of the world, and is dependent on blood and thus interested in more fights than not. I've described him before as like a preteen on xbox live who talks up a nasty game mostly out of loneliness and a need to be liked, where you can tell the kid themselves is not as bad as the people who taught them all those words and that they were "funny".

Deep down (and not all that deep, like I said, no filters), Syrin is a vulnerable child who was groomed to do violence and got no experience with it until strangers came to loot the dangerous ruins he was held in, at which point he did what you'd expect a strong but sheltered child to do faced with a home intruder, and killed/devoured that individual in a panic. His first kill being no glorious conflict or victory approved by his father, but essentially a desperate scramble in the dark with himself on the edge of fatal starvation messed him up even more than ten years of silence.

Enter Taylor and party, who happen to pass through those same environments. Syrin makes an attempt to body-snatch Taylor that fails due to the latter's particular properties, and Taylor, being both a good-hearted person and a stubborn busybody, feels obligated to bring this chatterbox with them and attempt to bully him into developing some sense of tact while Syrin attempts to Corrupt His New Wielder To Violence.

This doesn't work because Syrin has no real ideas how to go about corrupting someone besides loudly telling them to stab things more, while Taylor is an apprentice surgeon and mortician who is a lot more desensitized to bodies and their workings such that if they have a weapon, they'll at least consider it as a solution to most problems. So the punchline is that Syrin is more often thrown/flabbergasted by Taylor than vice versa, while the latter just sees him as a sort of annoying kid who's easily talked into almost anything as long as you compliment him first.

Another Black Metal Post, Mostly for Me

Okay, I’ve been into black metal for like, 12ish years now, but exclusively Asian bands and almost exclusively some kind of fusion. There’s a lot of homework involved with black metal that you’ve got to do to determine if a band is fascist or not, and I really just did not want to do that for the longest time. Non-white bands = non-nazi bands (though there’s a small and very confused nazi presence among non-white Latinos, apparently). But my ravenous hunger for more black metal, particularly of a 2nd wave-ier variety, has set me on this difficult hunt at last, and I’ve finally turned up some things from outside of Asia that I really adore. I’m going to write about them now! Deal with it! And don’t take away my Kvlt Kard for just now trying some of these bands.  Like I said, I’ve been into the Asian stuff for quite a while now, but outside of names and some background everything else is brand new to me. Though I’m quite hardcore about not supporting the music of filthy fascists, this does not mean that I need all my black metal to be explicitly leftist in their music. I’d prefer they weren’t, honestly. My political activity is purely defensive. It is not an interest of mine. It’s a duty which I begrudgingly accept. So to that end, I do generally prefer the safe bands that still write songs about Satan and shit lol Dark Funeral This band is exactly what I was looking for. Overly theatrical, plainly Satanic (of the Laveyan variety, even), and not unlistenably raw. Even on the early stuff, the production is still there. I’ve got a certain tolerance for the rougher stuff, but it’s not especially high, so Dark Funeral’s brand of crystal-clear blasphemy really suits me. Consider me a big fan. Belphegor This is a ridiculous pair of people who are very devoted to their art, and I respect that, even if they seem like jerks sometimes. They’re often more death than black, but the blacker stuff is delightful. They’re also quite disturbing, but not really in a way that bothers me too much. Blutsabbath fuckin’ bangs. EDIT: nvm it has been brought to my attention that these dudes may be fascists, and the lyrics to SBSR off of Necrodaemon Terrorsathan are sort of damning. Fuck ‘em unless they recant. Instead, please enjoy the music of another German-speaking band, Vorga. Sarcoma Inc. Psychopathology is a nutty album. It’s supposedly blackened thrash, but most of it feels more like... thrashened black, if that makes sense? It’s also been great inspiration for a story I might actually put to page some time. As the name suggests, every song on this one is extremely evil. Except I'll Spit on Your Grave, which is a bit whiny, if I’m honest. But the rest? Yes. So yes. Carach Angren Kind of a difficult listen, since their songs often flow together as a single story, so it’s hard to pick one out and be like “fuck yeah this bangs”. But taken as a whole, the fusion of black metal and gothic horror is as natural as it is bafflingly underutilized by other bands. The vocalist is a young dude who doesn’t look like a troll, too, which is always a plus in my book for bands that perform live. Though as long as there’s a cohesive and extravagant visual presentation, I’m not too bothered even if all the members are kinda old or schlubby (Dark Funeral lmao). But yeah, a lower-key symphonic black band that’s still high-key dramatic. Thanks, very cool. Immortal I really enjoy throwing on some Immortal when I need a quick black metal fix. They’re just so purely grim that a single song can provide all the vitamins and nutrients my blasphemous body needs to keep going during the work day. And it’s nice to have a connection to the early second wave that isn’t racist trash. Also, why don’t more black metal bands do the “write your songs about a fantasy world” thing? You’d think with all the Tolkien and medieval influence it’d be more of a thing. Maybe people just don’t want to be accused of copying Immortal. Anyway, good stuff. Zeal & Ardor This is actually the band that prompted my recent hunt, because I’d known about them since their debut but wasn’t all that excited with the lack of grimness in “Devil is Fine” and dismissed the whole experiment. Then early last year I decided to check in on them, and I found out that oh, they do indeed have a lot of songs that are more black than blues. I adore the combination, but I prefer when the black part takes the lead, like in Row Row and Come on Down. One of the best bands in metal tee-bee-H. Xolotl This is a pre-Hispanic Aztec folk-black band that only released one album, and it’s a fucking banger. I regularly listen to the whole thing. It was a spinoff of a more atmospheric Aztec-y band called Yaotl Mictlan, but I prefer the harsher sound of Xolotl. And the vocalist was a lady! A tatted-up Latina roller derby punk. She seems cool. Blackbraid A bit more atmospheric than I usually prefer, but it’s just this Native dude who lives in the middle of nowhere in the Adirondacks and makes songs about nature. Guy seems cool as shit, and his Native spin on the black metal look fuckin’ owns. Apparently the next album is going to be a lot folk-ier, which sounds fucking FANTASTIC because everything he’s done so far slaps. And honestly, the pagan/natural connection feels a lot more genuine here than with the Nordic bands, because Native suppression is still going on to this day. Scandinavia’s been Christian for what, 1,000 years already? bitch u isn’t oppressed, but Blackbraid’s really got something to scream about. Jute Gyte Jute Gyte is really hard to listen to and I think that’s super. But I like zeuhl, so like, sometimes I want to be musically exhausted. Jute Gyte reminds me a lot of zeuhl. They’ve also got a song called “Your Blood and Soil are Piss and Shit”, which should honestly be a new anti-fascist slogan. Love it. Crescent I just found them today, and they’re a bit more death than black most of the time, but MMMMMMMM my inner Egyptophile has been fed. “Reciting Spells to Mutilate Apophis” is such an incredibly hard song title. Though I wish the lyrics weren’t in English, but hey, Ancient Egyptian or even Coptic are probably too much to ask. But the vibe is still strong. And it’s nice that the band is actually, you know, Egyptian. So yeah, black metal. I’ve been enjoying my latest deep dive. I plan to stop by Diskunion tomorrow and see if I can pick up some Dark Funeral or something, even. It’s nice to have so much more to listen to while I work. This isn’t even most of it, just the stuff I’ve given a really thorough listen so far. I love being grim and shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay frosty royal milk tea - 7/10 - wow okay cool start right off the bat!! ARE YOU SMELLING THAT SHIT!! Different to what i’m used to hearing from FOB but its a welcomed difference!! Oh that bridge was so nice!! Yeah this slaps

Last of the real ones - 7/10 - this stating is giving coldplay 😭 its good tho!! When those guitars kick in 🤌🏻 it sort of looses its steam in the verses a little but it’s not enough to ruin anything!! Just makes that chorus hit. Strong final chorus. This is really good!!

HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T - 6/10 - a more tropical beat from FOB?? Kind of slays. Okay FOB x KARD performance when?? I am a sucker for when we just get a section of vocals without the instrumental!! It hits everytime!! I cant say this is a song I would choose to put on, but if it came on shuffle i would vibe so hard!! THE VOCALS IN THE BRIDGE??? heaven!!

Wilson (expensive mistakes) - 9/10 - oh this is good!! Yep that chorus!! Slays!! ILL STOP WEARING BLACK WHEN THEY MAKE A DARKER COLOUR!!!! I don’t even have much to say, this is just a whole vibe and i’m in love!! Gets a point deducted because the bridge didn’t hit like the rest of it. But still a huge slay!

Church - 8/10 - this one started out in a very imagine dragons way and i’m living for it!! I love his voice sm btw, i feel like i haven’t said that yet. There is just something about imperfect vocals that just hits so much better. Its the emotion 🤌🏻 yeah this one is groovy!! IF YOU WERE CHURCH I WOULD GET ON MY KNEES. so true!!

Heaven’s Gate - 10/10 - OMG THAT GUITAR IS THE PROGRESSION FROM EVERYBODY HURTS!!! I CAN PLAY THAT IN MY SLEEP!!! FUCK this is so good!! that chorus?!!!! Heaven’s gate?? More like i am actually in heaven!!! This would make a cracking TV drama song!! FUCKING HELL NO THIS IS RLLY GOOD

Champion - 6/10 - the guitars in this one 🤌🏻 IF I CAN LIVE THROUGH THIS!!! Literally my life motto atp. This feels like rock mixed with some classic hiphop in the verses. Its really good!! Yeah I like this one but again Idk if i would choose to listen to this one often. I would vibe if it ever came on randomly tho!!

Sunshine riptide - 6.5/10 - oh this is scratching my brain so well. oHH YEAH. The second verse??? Very different but not unwelcome. The instrumental for this one is so good tho. The bass 🫶🏻 the adlibs in the back 🤌🏻 yeah i think i like this one!

Young and Menace - 7/10 - that build up was so fucking good!! HOLY SHIT I was not expecting that Chorus!! This is so interesting!! It is definitely for a certain vibe, but I am on board!! This would have gone so hard on youtube fan edits back in the day!! This is real noise music!! Stray kids wish they could do this /j

Bishops Knife Trick - 8/10 - nice start!! Love the piano!! Solid drop to the chorus. Very much vibing with this one!! Has a nostalgic feel to it, would be amazon on a late night car ride!! Yep that bridge into final chorus really made the song!! A vibe 🫶🏻

[ARTICLE] AleXa is “XTRA” and Proud

Since AleXa debuted in 2019, the soloist has been acting the part of fiery A.I. warrior in an apocalyptic world, soundtracked by heavy trap and techno beats. With her colorful new single “Xtra,” she shows a glimpse of the artist beneath the concept. AleXa spoke to EnVi over email about Y2K inspirations in her latest album ReviveR, humble beginnings, and her never-ending passion for performing.

New Flavors, Extra Cheese

If you’ve heard AleXa speak for any amount of time, you already know “extra” is the perfect descriptor for the spritely, Gen Z idol. In interviews, and on her personal vlog channel, AleXa 360, she speaks in memes and RuPaul’s Drag Race references. Her discography tells a different story.

From the artist’s debut single “Bomb,” to her last comeback, “Revolution,” AleXa has dropped darker anthemic tracks, wrapped up in multiverse lore—loosely speaking, she’s an android, manufactured within a dystopian world. “All of my previous comebacks show you the A.I. AleXa, but with this new comeback and concept, we’re wanting to show you her past life and memories as a human,” AleXa writes. “While the choreography is still very hard-hitting, it gives a lighter edge than the dark and bombastic side that the fans are used to seeing.”

Buoyed by its horns and spoken hook (“I got you, I got you, I got you, I got you”), “Xtra” captures AleXa’s signature spunk. The track was written by two Swedish duos—Moonshine and Sunshine, who have both worked with NCT Dream, Red Velvet, Twice, and more—and the finished product retains most of its original English. By remaining in the idol’s native tongue, the song plays to her wheelhouse, with cheesy (no pun intended) but instantly earworm-y lines like, “On my burger and my fries always extra cheese, yeah,” that stick in your mind for days.

With “Xtra,” AleXa sought to combine the attitude of late ‘90s and early ‘00s hip-hop videos with the girlish sensibilities of high teen—a style craze currently taking over South Korea. The hodgepodge styling ranged anywhere from more modern-looking streetwear to airbrushed tees to preppy tartan. “The team and I really wanted to emulate things that we enjoyed from the 2000s, such as iconic fashion statements, old music video aesthetics, and the editing style,” AleXa says.

A Sagitarrius sun and moon, AleXa will freely admit that she’s deeply competitive, which explains the music video’s climax: a dance-off with KARD’s BM and rival crews, reminiscent of mid-aughts movies like Step Up. (She wins, of course.) It’s moments like these that make “Xtra,” though still connected to AleXa’s A.I. concept, feel more like a love letter to the eccentricities of the person behind the character, Alex Christine.

Knocking the Door Down

When one door closes, another opens—so goes the age-old adage. But doors don’t always open by themselves, and AleXa is well-acquainted with finding opportunity, wherever and whenever it may come knocking.

At the time she came to Korea from her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma to audition for Cube Entertainment and—the next week—a spot on Mnet survival show Produce 48, she hardly spoke any Korean. The former tryout resulted in rejection, and so did the latter, though not right away: she made it onto the show, but out of 96 contestants vying for debut in a temporary girl group, she ranked 82nd. (Don’t worry, she’s coping admirably.) Yet through this process, she was scouted by ZB Label, becoming their first and only trainee.

Debut for AleXa, as with all idol hopefuls, was never guaranteed. In a recent episode of K-pop Daebak, she recounts the story of a meeting she had with Zanybros (the parent company of ZB Label) CEO Kim Jun-hong amidst her training period. Second-guessing the rate at which she was improving in language proficiency and performance, AleXa says she held back tears as Kim hinted that this was the end of the line.

“He hands me this envelope, and he says, ‘In this envelope, there’s a contract that you [have to] sign that’s going to completely nullify the AleXa name, it’s going to cancel all debut plans, and it’s going to guarantee you a flight back home,’” she recalled on the podcast. Confused and heartbroken about having her dream snatched back from her a year into training, AleXa opened the envelope. Inside was a note congratulating her on her forthcoming debut.

As incidental as AleXa’s path to becoming a performer may appear, it would never have been possible without her resolve. After years of dancing as a child—she started at just eighteen months old—and performing in competitive show choir, AleXa studied musical theater during her brief stint at college. At the same time she was going to school and working at the mall, she made dance covers, building an audience on social media.

The only person who could tell AleXa no was herself. “While I never necessarily doubted that I would ever become a performer, it wasn’t always exactly what I wanted to do,” she recalls. “Growing up, I had a handful of different aspirations, all varying in different fields.” Had she not gone for the creative route, AleXa says, forensic pathology was up there on the list.

Going the “Xtra” Mile

How does AleXa keep pushing forward, despite the roadblocks she’s met along the way? “I honestly live my life by planning short-term goals for myself, whether it’s something I can accomplish within the day or within the week.” Looking back at her journey, a series of smaller victories pile up on each other: forming a following for herself, making it to Korea without family here for support, mastering a language foreign to her. Everything AleXa has achieved is built upon her relentless hard work and, as she semi-seriously jokes, “the will to not ever lose—in anything.”

And, as much as she’s grown, she’s not slowing down any time soon. With each comeback, AleXa has broadened her vocal range and Korean fluency—so much so that she’s begun to amass writing credits for majority Korean tracks. Funky ReviveR b-side “Obsession” was penned by a handful of writers, with a collaboration between AleXa and Vanessa Jefferson—Lizzo’s sister—while she was in Korea. “Obsession is definitely one of my passion projects,” AleXa writes. “I’m very grateful and blessed to have worked beside Vanessa in creating this track.”

Although the idol had participated in lyric writing before, this was AleXa’s first time trying her hand at toplining over preexisting instrumentals the label sent to her. For coming projects, she wants to expand her skillset even further: “I would very much like to learn how to compose tracks and to better myself as a lyricist for future albums.”

Authentically AleXa

On and off the stage, AleXa’s personas couldn’t be more different (cyberpunk soldier versus bubbly, 4’11” Oklahoma native), but there’s an underlying attitude of self-assuredness tying the two together. That easygoing confidence is what makes her so magnetic.

Now she wants to be a beacon of optimism for others. “Whenever people see me perform, I hope they take away positive energy and some kind of spark to fuel their inner fire to use towards their passions,” she says. More than entertaining, AleXa hopes to be creative and spiritual kindling for those around her—to push them toward their dreams, as she always has for herself.

“At the end of the day, you are the one and only you that exists,” she writes to fans inspired by her enduring energy. “Every day, go out there and be the best, most unapologetic, most authentic version of yourself.” Even, or perhaps especially, if it means being extra.

“Yuto-ya,” Hui called from his spot on his tiny couch in Yuto’s studio. Hui turns the phone so the screen is visible to Yuto. “Isn’t this Y/N?”

A quick glance and, yes, it’s you. Yuto likes to think he can find you in a crowd, no matter how many hairstyle changes you gave or how much you try to blend in with your clothes, but that just comes off kind of creepy. He has watched a lot of your interviews; and you have a lot of them, being a big figure in a famous idol group. He’s just so captivated by your range, your stage presence… It just gets him breathless whenever he sees you perform.

Your group is in the middle of a comeback right now, and Yuto has been religiously keeping up with any promotional material for your group that’s been coming up, but he’s just been super focused on his music today that the only thing that shocked him out of the haze was the teddy bear thrown at his head. You take a second or two more to think about your answer and say, “I’d like to get to know Yuto from Pentagon more.”

“Oooohhh,” the hosts exclaim. “He’s one of the rappers isn’t he?” one of them asks.

“Yes,” you say politely, smiling. Yuto isn’t sure if you’re actually red in the face or if that’s just the blush on your cheeks. “I really like the flow of his raps, and his voice is really nice.”

“Ahh, so you’re saying you like tall guys, yes?” the other host teases.

You laugh, slightly embarrassed. “I guess? I don’t really have a type, but Yuto was the first person to pop into my head who I am really interested in and would like to get to know.”

The hosts nod in approval, and your group members seated around you slap you playfully for admitting something like that.

Hui releases a high-pitched siren sound and playfully slaps Yuto playfully on the arm with his free hand. “Do you hear that, Yuto? Seems they like you, too. I wonder if we can go to one of their recordings for this comeback, hmm… Or maybe if our comebacks coincide you can talk to them then, huh?...” Hui continues to rattle off possibilities of Yuto getting into contact with you.

Meanwhile Yuto is still staring at the screen, frozen. The video continues to play, but he isn’t registering anything. Did you really just say, out loud, with a mic on, that you want to get to know him more? Like, he isn’t hallucinating that? Those words really came out of your mouth?

His chest is tight. It burns, but it’s also light. Yuto can’t put into words the feeling. Your sentiments are intangible, and there weren’t even any promises of actually going through with meeting up or exchanging numbers…

But it made him giddy. Indescribably happy.

He lets slip the tiniest of smiles as he continues watching the video and Hui mutters to himself about possible get-togethers with your groups.

Kino

It’s been a habit of Kino lately to listen to podcasts when he gets back to the dorm, as a way to unwind after a busy day. Not because he listens to them (although he does find time to listen and pay attention some other time), but the sound of amicable voices in the sometimes empty dorm is a comforting presence.

One of the podcasts he’s been listening to lately is called Ladies’ Room. His sister told him to listen to one of the episodes, and he found the discussions fun and educational, so he decided to just follow it and he’s updated with the latest one. So when a notification pops up on his phone about a new episode with a special guest, he immediately blasted it on his Bluetooth speaker.

“Hey, guys! This is Soo Ri and you’re listening to Ladies’ Room,” the host’s voice, like a droplet of water falling into a crystal clear puddle, slithers out from the speaker. “Today, we’re talking about love and relationships with a very special guest… idol-slash-actor-slash model, Y/N!”

“Hello, everybody!” you say, in a sweet cadence like a breeze rustling windchimes.

Kino almost drops the container of microwavable tteokkbokki he’s holding and looks at his phone, scandalized, as if it personally offended him. Obviously, it wouldn’t be a stretch for you to guest in podcasts, and even less of a stretch for you to guest-host this particular podcast, but Kino is still surprised. He can��t deny that it feels nice to know that he found you so unexpectedly.

Kino can’t remember when he started taking an interest on you. There was just one time when everytime he turned on the TV he would see your face—in a commercial, a variety show, a drama, that he finally decided to check you out. And from the first music video he clicked, he was hooked on you. Your way with words, your voice, your personality all just made him really want to know you more.

He doesn’t call it a crush, although to Yuto and Wooseok, the only two other people who know about his fanaticism, it comes off that way in droves. He shakes his head and finally unfreezes, putting the tteokbokki in the microwave to heat up. His ears automatically pick up the conversation.

“I know you must be really annoyed and fed up by questions like these, since I watch a lot of your interviews and the hosts ask about it a lot,” Soo Ri begins. “But what’s your stance on ideal types—like your ideal guy, or girl—and do you have one yourself?”

“Aahh, yeah, I do get questions like that sometimes, but they’re in different contexts, so I don’t really mind them.” Kino thinks that’s a polite answer and mentally claps. He hears you take a deep breath before saying, “I don’t think having an ideal type is realistic, though. I mean, that’s what ‘ideal’ means: it’s your idea of perfection, the best. I guess it could be like a blueprint for what you want in a partner, but I don’t think it’s possible for you to be able to tick off all those boxes.”

“Oh, yeah, I get what you’re saying. That’s a really good point.”

“As for my ideal type…” You hum, seeming deep in thought, but not enough to cause dead air. “It’s not really an ‘ideal’ type,” Kino can almost hear the air quotation marks when you said the word and it makes him smile, “but Kino from Pentagon has a lot of the qualities I like in someone.”

By now, Kino had taken his food from the microwave and taken a bite. He freezes with a mouth stuffed with tteokbokki. The spicy soup stinging his lips assures him that he is definitely awake and definitely not dreaming. Did she just—?

“Yeah,” he hears, desperately trying to tune back into the conversation. “He has a very bubbly and fun personality. He’s humble and loves his members and his fans. He’s also very good at what he does—I’ve listened to some of his stuff on SoundCloud, and they’re really good,” you say, and Kino thinks he should probably start chewing before he chokes on the rice cakes. “I mean, his dancing is excellent, his voice is so nice, and he’s also super cute.”

At this, you and Soo Ri both laugh conspiratorially, as if sharing a secret only between you two, as if this podcast isn’t going to be uploaded somewhere anyone who has access to the Internet can listen to, somewhere Kino can access at a moment’s notice.

Kino’s sure his face is as red as the tteokbokki soup right now. Literally no one can see because he’s the only one in the kitchen, but his face is on fire. He continues chewing and stuffing the rice cake strips into his mouth as he spirals into a crisis. His idol crush actually likes him back? He doesn’t think you actually like him, but you did say that there’s some aspects of him you like. That’s kind of similar, right? Right?

The whine comes out garbled from his full mouth. On one hand, he feels way lighter, bouncier, more energetic at knowing that the idol he likes knows about his existence and that she actually likes things about him and openly talked about it on a podcast, oh my goodness is this really real, like no one is messing with me right now?

So Kino sits there, lost in thought as he continues spearing food with his chopsticks, thinking. About how to reach you, maybe get your number, maybe propose a tiny collaboration? Maybe? About how he’s going to act in front of you in the off-chance that you do meet, as you and Soo Ri continue chatting in the background.

Wooseok

He can’t help stealing glances at you—you look really good in this comeback, and it takes everything for Wooseok to not be too conspicuous and focus on the interview that coincidentally has Pentagon and your group as guests. He’d like to think it’s a dream, but really, it feels more like a nightmare because he’s seated right next to you and his members literally won’t stop looking back and giving him mischievous smiles, or turning their chairs towards your group and making small talk, trying to drag him into the conversation and he feels like a fool because he seems incapable of replying with more than two-syllable words.

And it somehow gets worse during the segments. Not that the hosts are bad—they’re really good hosts. It’s just that there’s a segment where they read selected fan mail, so they would all have to answer it because they don’t really want to disappoint the fans by deflecting. The first few were harmless: what food they like eating during summer, if you were an animal what would you be? But then it went from zero to 100 real quick as the third question is read by your group’s leader, “Which idol is your ideal type?”

Everyone can’t help but make exclamations, oohs and ahs as they think of an appropriate answer. The hosts are gracious and give everyone ten seconds or so to come up with their answers before coaxing out some people’s. Eventually the line snaked to you and you timidly replied, “Wooseok-sunbae,” while avoiding his eyes.

If Wooseok could see himself in a mirror, he would see his eyes bug out and threatening to pop from their sockets, mouth desperately pursing to prevent the huge smile forming on his face. He doesn’t know how to react—what should he do, Cube didn’t train them for this. He needs help and Shinwon keeps slapping his thigh and arm like that isn’t the most obvious thing to do when they’re being filmed.

He can tell you’re embarrassed. You’re facing the hosts, your back to Wooseok, though he’s assuming your face is super red right now, and it’s not because of the blush. He kind of just wants this to be over so you can have a reprieve, but the hosts (being hosts), ask you to elaborate.

“Um, he’s a really great rapper, and he seems really caring,” you say softly. “I watched a program with him once taking care of his cats, and I thought it was really cute.” Wooseok recalls that show and his chest loosens slightly at the mention of it, touched that you remember that tiny segment he did. He really loves his cat, and he’s not gonna admit it, but he likes that your takeaway from the program is that he looks cute playing with tiny animals.

“Ooh, yes, we love guys who are nice to animals,” one of the hosts says, and turns directly to Wooseok. “Wooseok-sshi, since she mentioned you, we’ll leave you for last, okay? So we can properly build up the hype for the viewers back at home.” The boy nods; at least this gives him time to think of nice things to say to you amidst the flurry of thoughts running through his head at the moment.

He imagines talking to you after filming is over and exchanging numbers. He imagines hanging out with you if you have any free time. He imagines maybe doing a small collaboration with you, wishes it were possible. The images he conjures up make him smile, even if he is still kind of embarrassed—he was never one of the cucumber-cool members of the group—but he decides that since you threw yourself off the boat, he might as well throw himself off and join you.
