Vandaag vond ik op het strand van Karavomylos een prachtig fragiel sponsje. Ik heb hem meegenomen. Meer kan ik er nog niet over vertellen.

Greece has announced it will open two new "transit camps" on its mainland for migrants and refugees.

The goal: To speed up the transfer of asylum seekers from desperately overcrowded camps on the northeast Aegean islands of Lesbos, Chios and Samos.

There has been a huge spike in arrivals in recent weeks, which has put a massive strain on resources and has caused tensions at existing camps.

Locals concerned over potential permanence of camps

The Greek Citizen Protection Ministry said the new units would be temporary, serving only as transit centers. But locals are concerned that the centers could eventually turn into permanent camps as the influx of migrants into Greece, especially from Turkey, continues.

One of the two camps will be located in a defunct military base in the village of Karavomylos in the region of Fthiotida, while the second is planned as an addition to an already existing pre-departure center in Corinth in the Peloponnese region.

The government wants both facilities to start operating by the end of the month. They are supposed to accommodate approximately 1,000 migrants and refugees.

Government in crisis?

Greece's government, led by the New Democracy party, is already facing the wrath of the beleaguered local communities on the islands, and it now risks upsetting more citizens as it struggles to cope with the migrant and refugee influx.

Virginia Stergiou, mayor of the town of Stylida, which is located just north of the village of Karavomylos where one of the transit centres is set to open, has spoken out against the move.

"It is not acceptable that in a coastal zone where we are trying to plan to develop our tourism that we have to face this," she told reporters. "For starters, that place is not fit to operate as a reception centre, the conditions are not up to scratch [...] The haste, the lack of due diligence and the manner in which the whole thing is being done shows that the government is not on the right track. The municipality cannot lift all this burden. The outcome will be very bad for the citizens here, but also for the refugees themselves, because of the conditions in the camp."

Wir haben gestern gleich zwei Zikaden gesehen, obwohl die sich so toll tarnen!

Zugegeben, die auf dem Balkon war schon sehr leicht zu finden, aber die im Baum haben wir nur gesehen, weil sie direkt neben meinem Ohr saß! Und die sind so laut! Manchmal hat man das Gefühl, dass sie lauter als Autos sind.

Die auf dem Baum haben wir in Agios Efimias gefunden, wo wir eine Picknick Pause gemacht haben.

In Sami waren wir am Karavomylos See. Das ist ein Süßwasser See der aus einer unterirdischen Quelle gespeist wird.

Die Quelle ist so ergibig, dass man dort ein Mühlrad betreiben kann.

Auf dem See leben Gänse und in dem See sogar Forellen.

Leider haben wir in dem Restaurant am See nicht nur genervtes und übellauniges Personal angetroffen, das Essen war auch sehr schlecht!

Eine Freundin von uns, selber Griechin, sagt immer: „Saganaki kann man immer essen, den kann man nicht falsch zubereiten.“

Der Koch hat sich scheinbar große Mühe gegeben! Der Saganaki war fast ungenießbar!

Bevor wir uns zum Donkey Trecking begeben haben, waren wir in Sami am Hafen.

Nicht sehr aufregend, einen schönen Yachthafen gibt es dort.

Das Donkey Trecking haben diesmal nur die Kinder mitgemacht. Und L. hat den Esel sogar selbst „gesteuert“!

Een Grieks botfragment

Verboden

Om ervoor te waken dat ‘toeristen’ het complete cultuurhistorische en archeologische erfgoed als souvenir mee naar huis nemen is het in Griekenland, net als in de meeste landen rond de Middellandse Zee, verboden dit soort spullen te verzamelen en mee te nemen. Op sommige plaatsen is het meenemen van kiezels al strafbaar. Fossielen, artefacten en zelfs stenen meenemen in je bagage is daarom, zeker wanneer je vliegt, erg onverstandig. Om die reden heb ik tijdens mijn vakantie de fossielen die ik vond slechts gefotografeerd. Althans dat dacht ik.

Fossiel bot

Tijdens een strandwandeling van Karavomylos naar Sami viel mijn oog, getraind als ze zijn, op iets dat sprekend op een fossiel botfragment leek. Verrast dat ik was, fossiel bot daar had ik niet op gerekend, nam ik het mee om het in mijn vakantiewoning nog eens aandachtig met de loep te kunnen bestuderen. Het bleek onmiskenbaar fossiel bot. Het substantia spongiosa (sponsachtig botweefsel) was gevuld met een ijzerrijke substantie. Over hoe oud het bot was en van welk dier had ik geen idee: daarvoor ontbrak elke context. Maar goed het was wel fossiel bot.

Thuis

Bij het uitpakken van de koffer voelde ik een hard object in de vuile was, ik dacht in eerste instantie aan mijn zakmes, maar nadat ik nog eens goed voelde, werd het me duidelijk. Ik rekende de enigszins maanvormige vorm. Het was het stuk bot. Nietsvermoedend had ik hem meegesmokkeld.

Omdat het een niet al te fraai stuk is, op de Zandmotor had ik hem laten liggen, maar wel het enige fossiel uit Griekenland, heb ik het stuk vandaag op een sokkel geplaatst. Heb ik ineens een alleraardigst souvenier. Een foute, dat wel, dus…

Old Vlachata

Voor de westkust van het Griekse vaste land precies op de breuklijn tussen de Euraziatische en de Egeïsche platen liggen de Ionische eilanden.

De vorming van de Ionische eilanden vond plaats in het Kwartair, als gevolg van intens compressietektonisme en opwaartse kracht hetgeen duidelijk te zien is in het landschap aan de diagonale gelaagde kalksteen formaties en de verhoogde paleo-kustlijnen aangetroffen in de vorm van mariene erosiesporen.

De vorming van de eilandengroep is sinds het begin in het Beneden-Plioceen feitelijk niet meer gestopt. In 1953, geologische zeer recente geleden dus, werd het gebied getroffen hevige aardbevingen. De zwaarste met een kracht van 7,2 op de schaal van Richter. Op het zuidelijke deel van Kefalonia was de impact het grootst. Daar kwam de grond 60 centimeter omhoog. Dit met verwoestende gevolgen. Ook hiervan zijn de sporen goed zichtbaar. In de heuvels achter Karavomylos liggen Vlachata en Poularde twee door de aardbeving verwoeste dorpen die sindsdien verlaten zijn. Daar heeft behalve de tijd niemand meer wat aan gedaan.

Een wandeling door deze voormalige dorpen is meer dan een bijzondere ervaring.
