DP X DC PROMPT #25
(#) = Notes at the end of post
(*) = Just me building off of other ideas.
Family Reunion
Clockwork sends an adult Danny, newly appointed Ancient of Space, on a mission through time again. Except this time, it isn't located on Earth, but a distant planet he's never even heard of before. Clockwork didn't tell him any specifics on what he was supposed to do or when he was supposed to return to his own time, just to blend in and have an experience. He would know when it was time to return.
Needless to say, he has a blast! His core is bursting with happiness at getting the chance to explore this unknown corner of the universe with a sky full of constellations he's never seen and fascinating locals. Considering he might be here a while, he buckles down and learns all about their culture and their traditions and even eventually learns their language without having to use the two-way translator Clockwork gave him.
He spends decades there, not even having to worry about how he never appears to age, the people here being incredibly long-lived. However, he eventually meets someone. Someone he falls head over heels for. He gets married. He has kids. He watches them slowly grow into adults as well. It isn't until one of his sons informs him that he's expecting his own child(1) that Danny feels a tug at his core.
He ignores it, but over the course of a few weeks, it's gone from the occasional pull to a full-on yank at his entire being, along with a sense of dread that something was going to happen to this wonderful little planet. To his family.
He becomes restless and loses so much sleep, it's a miracle he can even stand. His family are worried for him, but he assures them that he's just feeling a little under the weather. One night, he's sat up in bed, unable to sleep again. His gaze is fixed lovingly on his spouse, but nonetheless sad.
He doesn't miss when all the soft sounds of the night stop and a green glow appears behind him.
"It's time to leave, isn't it?"
"Yes."
"There isn't any way I could stay? I can't bring them with me?"
"I'm afraid not. There are some things that can't be changed or stopped, even when they fall into your domain. I'm sorry."
"Why send me here just to make me abandon them like this? What was the point?"
Clockwork is silent, but when Danny turns to look at the ghost, he's gone.
Danny takes a few more precious days to spend time with his family. Kiss his spouse. Hug his kids. Feel the strong kicks of his grandchild he won't be there to witness the birth of.
The night he leaves, he places a letter on his spouse's nightstand, gently kisses their forehead, and disappears in a flash of green, never to be seen again.
Years later is when Danny gets the news. That the planet Krypton is no more and that his family is gone. He searched the Ghost Zone for them, but he never knew the location of Krypton in the cosmos. Their afterlife is beyond his reach, in a place that isn't even on the Infamap.
He nearly drowns himself in grief when he finds a sliver of reprieve in the form of a news broadcast. An extraordinary man in blue and red with the kryptonian symbol for such emblazoned on his chest is shown fighting off multiple enemies at once. He is the spitting image of his father and Danny as well.
He had a grandson. His grandson was alive.
(1) This was Kara, not Clark. Danny left before he even found out about Kal-El being in the oven, so there will be a misunderstanding at first. Then Kara pops up later, and Danny just bawls his eyes out that he had two surviving grandchildren without even knowing it this whole time. How he first meets either of them is up to you!
(*) What this means power-wise for Clark is yours to decide. As well as what Clark already knows about his grandfather from the stored information his father left him. What his father thought of Danny disappearing without a word is also up for you to decide.

“So, you’re coming?” Jacob’s voice quavers with excitement. You can’t imagine how he’d sound if you said no. You hate letting people down, it seems to be all you've ever done.
“Uh, yeah,” you say as you steer around the track; opting for some MarioKart over Minecraft that night, “boss says it’s no problem to get the days off. Just have to make it up after. Is... Is everything still good on your end?”
“Oh yeah, sure thing,” he assures buoyantly, “I can’t wait. Did you still wanna split the airBnB?”
“Actually, I got a place to stay for the night then I’ll take the early bus back,” you explain as Princess Peach knocks you off the track, “argh!”
“Right, that’s good,” he says, “good to know you won’t be stranded out there.”
“Mhm,” you use your boost to catch up to Peach and get your revenge. You don’t mention that Kara will be with you at the con. You just want to be sure this isn’t something wonky. “It’ll be nice to get out of town. My grandma will probably be happy to have the place to herself.”
“Yeah,” he scoffs, “what’s her problem anyway?”
“Just the way she is. She likes her space,” you shrug, “I don’t know, I don’t think she expected to be raising her granddaughter...”
“Ah, yeah, I guess that would be stressful,” he says, “still, seems like you’re not too bad to be around. Got a job, go to school, all that. Think my dad would love it if I put in half as much effort.”
“Yeah? You make him sound like a hard ass.”
“Can be. Lawyer, so kinda his schtick,” he chuckles.
“Oo, fancy,” you snort. Maybe if either of your parents had been lawyers, you wouldn’t be living off your grandma’s resent.
“I guess. Never really see him that much...” he grumbles.
“Hm, well, no winning, is there?” You mutter.
“Not really,” he sighs and hisses, “ugh, Toad!”
You chuckle and cross the finish line. A respectable second. You wait for him to finish and stifle a yawn.
“Tired?” He asks.
“Little.”
“Me too, long day,” he groans, “neck’s killing me.”
“Oh, what’d you do--”
“You know, I’m-- an idiot. Was messing around on my bike.”
“Of course,” you snicker, “well, if you don’t mind, I’m gonna sign off. I don’t wanna keep my grandma up and my head’s starting to go.”
“Sure, I gotta get up early anyway,” he sounds less than enthused. “Good night.”
“You too.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Can’t, work. Day after?”
“Okay, I’ll make it work,” he confirms, “I’m excited about meeting up. Aren’t you?”
“Yep,” you try not to show your doubt. You’re still not really sure about everything.
“Can’t wait,” he rasps and the silt in his tone makes you shiver.
“Yeah, er, bye then,” you hit end session and take off your headset, your ears tender and a bit sweaty. Even if it is awkward, at least you’ll get to hang with Kara for a bit. You haven’t seen her since grad.
🎮
You’re already exhausted and you’re not even inside yet. The line for the convention is bustling and your excitement keeps you going as you and Kara gab away and move with the slow crawl. The sun beams down and has you sweating, though you could easily blame that on your nerves too.
“So, this Jacob... is he cute?” She winks.
“Kara,” you roll your eyes, “it’s not like that. Really. We just game.”
“Oh yeah. But do you want it to be more?” She teases.
“You know I’m not really into all that. I don’t have room for a boyfriend in my life.”
“So boring. Never change, girlie,” she nudges you playfully. “But really, that’s smart. Calvin is too much. I’m thinking of cutting him loose.”
“Again?” You squint.
“Not my fault he keeps coming back,” she giggles.
You peer around, searching out a familiar face amid the ocean of strangers. You haven’t seen Jacob yet. You’re almost hoping he doesn’t show up. Then again, why wouldn’t he? He paid for you to be here. The reminder of the fact strikes guilt in your chest.
You pause as your eyes catch another pair, further back in the queue. An older man with a beard. He stands out among the crowd. He wears a tidy button-up where most wear graphic tees or cosplay attire. He stares for a moment before he turns away and looks down, probably at whatever kid dragged him there.
“Well, what are you going to do if he sees you and falls in love?” Kara asks.
“Whatever,” you roll your eyes.
“If he’s a nerd like you, how could he not?”
“Hey,” you frown.
“What? You’re like the sexy gamer girl type. Isn’t that what dudes want?” She shrugs. “Let me see his pic again. He’s a skinny little thing. He’d definitely be into you.”
“Urgh, stop,” you cross your arms.
“Sorry, I’m only playing. You just seem so nervous, I’m trying to loosen you up.”
“I know,” you puff, “it’s just... I should’ve just said no. This is stupid. I don’t know why I even agreed.”
“To get out of that shithole,” she snips. “Why do you think I hauled ass the minute I popped by grad cap on?”
“Mm, yeah, I just hope... do you think he really wants that? Maybe I gave him the wrong idea. Oh, Kar, I really didn’t mean to lead him on.”
“No, no, I’m sure it’s nothing you did if he does. I mean, he’s probably a virgin so...”
“That’s mean,” you pout.
“What, so are you,” she laughs.
“Exactly,” you shake your head and drop your arms, a buzz jittering your skirt pocket.
You look down at yourself as you slide your phone free. That was probably a bold choice but it’s so damn hot out. Besides, your Pikachu tee is loose enough to counteract the denim sheath. You turn the screen up, shading it with your hand as you read.
‘Sorry, not going to make it. Something came up. 🙁'
You frown and reread the message. Really? You came all the way here, took time off of work, and he’s flaking?
“What’s up?” Kara asks as she clicks her manicured nails impatiently and stands on her toes, trying to see past the bodies ahead.
“He just cancelled,” you mutter and type in your reply.
‘Oh no. Hope it’s nothing bad. Maybe another time.’
You hit send and drop your shoulders. You’re surprised how disappointed you are. More so about the wasted effort than anything. Even if you are a bit relieved, it’s shitty.
“Ah, bullshit!” Kara sneers, “what the hell? What did he say?” She reaches for your phone and you hold it out of her grasp. “That fucker.”
“It’s probably not his fault. Shit happens.”
“Babe, you’re gonna settle for a lot of nonsense if you keep that attitude. I’d be friggin pissed if I was you. He brings you all the way here and now he’s too good for you. I bet he saw some cute girl in line and she smiled at him once so now he’s ditching,” she scowls, “I hate boys.”
“I’m sure... it’s nothing,” you say glumly as your phone vibes again.
‘I’m real sorry. I hope you still have a good time. Take lots of pictures.’
You don’t respond. You lock your phone and put it back in your pocket. It never feels good to be stood up. Even then.
“You know what, screw him,” Kara snarls, “let’s go in there and buy you the cutest plushie you can find. Hell, maybe you can find an even cuter guy.”
“Kar,” you warn her.
“Fine, just the plushie. Maybe two,” she trills, “forget that loser.”
🎮
The chaos of the convention wipes away the dark cloud over you. You’re almost thankful that Jacob gave you the opportunity to catch up with Kara. You didn’t realise how much you missed her. It’s perfect day where you can forget about your grandmother and your lame job and everything else.
You rush around from booth to booth. You look at fanart, handmade figures, and stuffies. You’re mindful of your wallet and how empty it really is. You’ll get one thing and a snack. That’s all you can afford.
As the hours roll by, your early morning bus ride and time spent standing out in the hot sun catch up to you. You feel your muscles starting to ache and your eyelids turning fuzzy. You yawn as you shuffle behind Kara as she waits in line to get a signature from the one D-list celeb she’s heard of. You’d get one too but it’s way too expensive.
“Hey,” you rub your cheek, “mind if I sit and wait? I wanna grab a soft pretzel anyway.”
“Sure,” she agrees easily, “looks like it’s gonna be a while.”
“Want me to bring you a drink or something?” You offer.
“Nah, just text me where you are so I can find you,” she says.
You leave her reluctantly. You’d rather not be wandering alone through the hordes but your feet are killing you and your stomach’s been roaring for the last hour. You stand in line for the pretzel stall and get yours with cinnamon sugar and syrup. Messy but delicious.
You find a table in the corner and settle in. You put your phone beside the napkin and tear apart the doughy goodness. Your phone lights up with a notification from the merge game you like to play and you see several other icons; missed messages.
You focus on your snack, savouring each bite, as your eyes drift around the crowded centre. You can barely see some of the booths as hordes cluster around. Some cosplayers bat at each other with toy swords as children fight over the arcade machines. You’re overwhelmed by the sheer amount of activity all around.
You put your head down trying to block out the lights and noise. You feel yourself getting overstimulated. It’s like when you’re in the lecture hall and suddenly you can hear every sniff, sneeze, and keystroke. You close your eyes as you wipe your fingertips on the edge of the napkin, only half-finished your pretzel.
“Looks good,” a deep voice cuts through the blaring din.
As you recognise the timbre, your heart squeezes and the world pinpoints at the centre of your skull. You open your eyes and slowly raise your head. You blink dumbly at the unfamiliar man stood in front of you. You think you’ve seen him before, or at least he sticks out from the typical convention attendee.
It isn’t that he’s too old, there’s lots of older geeks hanging around but they have neckbeards and greasy combovers. His hair is tidy and his beard trimmed close. His clothing also lacks the typical Dorito dust or anime character. You remember, he was outside in the line.
“Uh, hello?” You utter.
“Sorry I’m late,” he says as he pulls out the chair across from you. He sits as your insides plunge. You know his voice.
“Jacob?” You murmur in shock. How? Why? This isn’t the stringy teenager you met online.
He nods, his jaw tensing, and he crosses an arm over the table, pointing to your half-eaten pretzel, “what’d you get on yours? I can’t decide between sweet or savoury.”
“Who... are you?” You croak, head spinning as your eyes prick. You knew something was weird. You knew you weren’t talking to Jacob or whoever that boy was in the pictures.
He takes a breath and lets it out slowly. As his chest deflates, you do too. He’s older than you, bigger than you, and by the looks of him, a lot better off. Why the hell would he be chatting with you? Why would he lie to you?
“You’re right. I’m not Jacob,” he confesses, the colour draining from his face. He steeples his fingers and considers his next words carefully. You sit back and hug yourself defensively. This is fucked. “My name is Andy, Jacob is my son.”
“Your son?” You eke out, “why-- why would you lie?”
He cringes and takes another breath, “he was my son,” he corrects himself, “he... passed.”
You feel like you’ve been struck. Your mouth falls open, stunned. Not only did he hide behind his son’s photos, but his dead son’s. Oh, god. You feel sick. No, you feel stupid.
“Look, please, just hear me out. I just—it wasn’t meant to go on this long. When I first lied to you, it was supposed to be that one time. I was... I was lost. I just lost Jacob and I was going through his things. I started playing because I missed him. I wanted to feel like he was still there--”
“No, no, you got on discord and you started talking to me. As him!” Your voice shakes and your eyes tinge. “That’s not just missing him.”
“I know, you’re right. I lied but... I got lonely playing by myself so yes, I went onto that discord. You were nice. You didn’t call me a noob or whatever. And... and after work, looking forward to hearing your voice, it got me through a lot of pain. Being alone in that house after so long, I couldn’t cope--”
“So you lied to me?” You stand and snatch your phone, nauseous to the core, “you manipulated me. How do you know—if you had just been you that I would’ve been any different? If you just wanted to play games, to be friends--”
“I was scared--”
“I don’t care if you were scared,” you hiss as you stomp forward. “You’re an adult.”
He stands and blocks your path. You recoil, put off by his height. He’s a lot bigger on his feet.
“Please, move or... I’ll scream,” you breathe.
“You don’t have to do that. Just hear me out,” he pleads.
“I don’t want to hear anything else from you, Jacob. Or Andy. Or whoever you really are,” you sneer, “move.”
He shudders and hangs his head. He makes himself seem small as his shoulders round and he backs out of your way. You bite down and march past him.
You need to get to a bathroom. Now. You’re going to spew up your guts. More important, you need to get yourself together before you go find Kara. She can’t know this happened. It’s too embarrassing.

List of the Kent family (aka Martha and Jonathan are parenting and grand parenting these people no matter what you say):
1: Clark Kent. I mean is this even a question?
2: Lana Lang. they don’t care that they aren’t involved anymore, Lana is always welcome. Unless she just recently tried to kryptonite gas the planet.
3: Lois Lane. Again, how would this be a question?
4: Jimmy Olsen. I’ll be honest I know they love him, but he’s 100% the person they make fun of behind his back like proper midwesterners. Yes we all have that one person.
5: Linda Danvers: They don’t know if they see her as a niece, daughter or granddaughter, but they love her so much.
6: The Danvers: Have you read the comics with these guys in them? They’re awesome and they helped with so much.
7: Kara’s Kryptonian parents if they aren’t in Kandor.
8: Karen Starr: They don’t see her much, but if she ever needs a break they have an apple pie ready for her.
9: Mon-El: Not sure where’s he’s at currently in comics, but if he’s not dying, he’s welcome.
10: Chris Kent: Their first for sure grandchild who they taught their child how to forge documents for upon meeting him.
11: Kon-El: He doesn’t see Superman as dad, but these three see each other as grandparents and grandson. The only argument I will accept on this is if you hc him as trans or non-binary.
12: Connor Kent (YJ show): He sees Clark as an absentee father, but these two were never absent once they found out about each other.
13: Jon Kent: They love this little bundle of joy.
14: Jonathan Kent (older Jon, don’t ask it’s a lot): They’re a little disappointed in him, but they love him and understand what he did and that he’s trying. But he’s, like Kara aren’t allowed plus ones cause they have awful taste in ppl.
15: Maik-El (Superboynfrom RoTS movie): Once he’s taken in by the Danvers and punching Jon, they welcome him with open arms.
16: Thara (possibly): I need to read more to make this calling.
17: Kong Kenan: They had Clark bring him over when they heard about the new Superman in China. He was a little overwhelmed but has since warmed up and blames Ma Kent for that extra five pounds (not like it’s muscle, but blame the pie.)
Obviously others are invited such as the Bats, the Wonders, J’onn, etc, but these ones are their family. If I missed any other Supers please let me know. Superlad might get added along with Matrix, but I have some reading to do before that.

I really want to make an all encompassing post at some point on how Larian fails at writing evil (in bg3) and two other all encompassing posts about how they failed at writing Viconia and Sarevok in particular. That isn't what this post is going to be, but I just need to air some things out for myself.
LIKE if you take all of the trauma that the bg3 companions have and combined them into one character, you have Viconia. And if you put in the effort to help her become a better person- becoming true neutral in alignment (the same alignment as Jeheira btw), you really get to see all of that. And yes it takes until the end of Throne of Bhaal to do, and it is actual work. You have to try, and keep at it, and it;s hard. It's not "just say nice things and then good things happen" there are a lot of ups and downs and unlearning of toxic behaviors that Viconia goes through. It takes time. It it's so rewarding to see her reach that.
I've said my piece on Seravok before. BUT I think it's extremely fucked they took such a nuanced antagonist, someone who killed a person your player characters is suppose to love (if you think they see that person as family) and you can still reach out to him, help him. make see how he was wrong and how it hurt him and the people he loved. get his alignment to change from chaotic evil all the way to chaotic good. But then Larian makes a black man who is incestuous and very abusive to his extremely white looking daughter/granddaughter. It's just so awful. I hated seeing it so much. Like seriously- why the fuck did they do that? It makes no sense. And I do think it's important to point out Sarevok being black. Larian treat the black characters in bg3 rather poorly. It's racist. Doesn't matter if they did it intentionally or not. If anyone is a black fan I would love to read any addition you'd want to add to this post.
They also just get so much wrong about this character? He was never a Bhaal worshiper. He wanted to use his situation of being a Bhaalspawn to obtain godhood. And this self distributive path is what causes Tamako to leave him. Because she knew she was going to loose him anyways if he didn't stop. And then he got into a new relationship where his new parent encourage his self destruction and benefited from it. Post series, in the end game slides, regardless if you helped Sarevok change his alignment or not, he personally escorts Tamoko's body back to her homeland, Kara-Tur (if you're interested there is a mod that let's Tamoko live and become a companion of Gorion's Ward. I haven't played with it yet, but I plan on checking it out. There are so many mods that let poc companions with scripted deaths live, it nice to see- even if those deaths could have been not written or at the very least have the abilities to save them should have been there from the beginning.)
Both of these characters are about the cycle of abuse, on rather it gets broken or not. Just like the companions from bg3 are. But Larian says "no they failed and in fact are irredeemable"
It's shocking that games from 1998 and 2001 had a better discussion on restorative justice. And yes it's a fantasy setting where you care suppose to fight people, you're not going to be able to do that with every character. But doing this better than a game in 2024? When we have so much more resources and knowledge about this? It's just disheartening.
That isn't to say that the original games didn't have their flaws, they very much did. The stuff from bg3 is just more raw right now.

The Interconnected Family Tree of Anubis
I was trying to keep my family tree headcanons on straight for fic purposes, so I devised my own family tree for all the complicated pre-canon HOA connections. Almost everything on here is headcanon, so take it with a grain of salt, but if you like it, feel free to use this!
First up we have the Frobisher-Smythe & Rush families! I added some lore surrounding RFS’ family, which is as follows (TRIGGER WARNING FOR MENTIONS OF SELF UNALIVING)

Eleanor Frobisher-Smythe (1841-1881) was a Paragon, but could not handle the burden, nor could she deal with the constant badgering from spirits and gods in her head. After the birth of her second son, Robert, she suffered with postpartum depression. She killed herself via morphine overdose a year after his birth.
Julian Frobisher-Smythe (1841-1908) was Eleanor's Osirian. He built the Anubis Estate (though it wasn’t called that yet) based on a vision he had that essentially insisted that it would be a crossroads of destiny. He could not save his wife and Chosen One from herself, and blamed himself for her death up until the day he died of TB in 1908
Robert Frobisher-Smythe (1880-) was a brilliant (and mental) man who was superbly skilled in chemistry/alchemy, riddles, metalworking, carpentry, masonry, archaeology, and history in general. He, after several successful trips to Egypt, suffered the from the curse placed upon all who disturbed the tomb on Howard Carter’s expedition in 1922, along with taking the fall for his friends on the expedition who dared to disturb the Staff of Osiris. He was cursed to sleep by Ammut for their folly, and pronounced dead to avoid suspicion, with only those he trusted for the ceremony aware of the truth.
Edward Frobisher-Smythe (1878-1918) was Robert’s older brother. He was not nearly as brilliant (or mental), but he was strong and good-hearted. He, like many brave men, fought in WWI and died in the Second Battle of the Somme in 1918.
(Louisa also had ancestors who were Chosen Ones, and while that does technically mean she and Robert are related, it’s incredibly distant since Amneris’ descendants are spread all over the globe.)
Sarah Frobisher-Smythe (1915-2010) was the Paragon, and her life was incredibly tragic and tumultuous, marked by being her family’s secret keeper for secrets she didn’t really know. She went into hiding in the 70s/80s after discovering the Society’s existence and what their ultimate goals were, and assumed the identity Emily Grant. She is buried with that name.
Rebecca Rush (1881-1950) was a brilliant woman, one of the first WOC to be educated in England, which is where she met both Robert and Louisa. She and Robert fell in love, got married, and a year after the birth of their son, Charles, in 1913, they got a divorce and she moved both herself and her son to America to set up with family there.
Charles Rush (1913-2012) grew up in America with very little contact with his father before he was put to sleep, but he knew his role well. He married a woman, Eloise, and had two children, Robert “Bobby” Rush and Nora Rush. Bobby suffered from severe depression and anxiety, but he was a good man. He married Josie Rush, and they had a daughter, Kara-Tatiana “KT” Rush. Josie died of melanoma in 2005, and Bobby lost his battle with depression that same year*. Nora moved back to England, and resides in London as a bit of a recluse museum curator.
KT Rush (1995-) is the great-granddaughter of Robert Frobisher-Smythe. She came to school at her grandfather’s behest to do what Charles had become too old to do. She was a member of Sibuna.
*Note that KT is raised by her aunt on her mother’s side, Becca Talbott
————————————————————
Now we move to Louisa’s side of the family, which you might recognize as the Denby family. Yes, I’ve decided to connect Louisa with the Denby family as a way of incorporating that family more closely with the Frobisher’s. Hang on tight cuz it’s about to get complicated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cartwright & Elizabeth Denby gave birth to three children: Isabel, Thomas, and Louisa. They were strong willed people who were not afraid to push their children toward greatness.
Louisa Denby became Louisa Frobisher-Smythe (1883-1922) in 1913, after Robert and Rebecca divorce. Louisa is a brilliant mind, a woman who, like her husband, could make just about anything. As kind as she was, she was also greedy and complicit (often more than complicit) in her expedition party’s exploits. She gave birth to Sarah Frobisher-Smythe in 1915, and after several successful trips to Egypt, suffered the curse placed upon all who disturbed the tomb on Howard Carter’s expedition in 1922. She died in a horrific car accident the end of that same year.
Thomas Denby was a strong, no-nonsense man; he married an equally no-nonsense woman named Victoria. He was entrusted by his brother-in-law Robert to act as his Keeper, a roll he passed down to his only son Thomas Denby Jr, who then passed it down to his oldest and biological daughter, Harriet.
Harriet Denby (1977-) is a pragmatic woman, who made her living as a teacher, while also doing her best to live up to her family’s legacy as a Keeper. At least until she’s drugged and stuck in a mental facility by her adopted younger sister Caroline, who then assumes her identity and role.
Caroline Denby (1979-2012) was a deeply troubled young woman who was adopted by her neighbors, the Denby family, after her mother hanged herself. She had delusions of grandeur and didn’t care who she had to hurt, even if that meant her beloved older sister, to achieve that greatness. She was murdered and devoured by the goddess Ammut.
Isabel Denby became Isabel Zeno when she married Gustav Zeno, a French historian. She was a frivolous woman, and she had a bubbly, playful personality that was hard to dislike. She happily raised Sarah alongside her son Rufus after her sister died.
Gustav Zeno was a French historian from Paris, who married Isabel and had a son Rufus. He worked closely with Robert and Victor Rodenmaar Sr on the Elixir of Life recipe.
Rufus Zeno (1915-2011) was a bright, rambunctious, and strong young man, divinely tasked with being the Osirian to Sarah Frobisher-Smythe. He had ambitions far beyond being a mere protector, however, and the more Elixir he took, his resentment toward his cousin/adopted sister grew. He, Sarah, and Victor Jr founded the Amun Academic Boarding School in 1960, and soon after, he and Victor founded the Society, along with several others. In 1936, he had a daughter, Evelyn, who he and the woman he’d been seeing with decided to put up for adoption. Later in life, as he still appeared young, he had another child with Maggie Sweet, named Eric. He betrayed Sarah and the Society and eventually came to ruin when his hubris got him possessed by the Forgotten Ruler, Senkhara and sent to a fiery end.
Evelyn Meridian Martin (1936-) was put up for adoption almost immediately after her birth, and was taken in by a kindly American couple. She lived a happy life, unburdened by her origins, and eventually married a kindly man named William Martin, and had a son Peter Martin, who married a Spanish woman Marie. She raised her granddaughter after Peter and Marie died in a car wreck in 1999.
Nina Martin (1995-) is potentially the last Paragon to walk the earth, since she has fulfilled her purpose of restoring the Cup of Ankh. She is the former leader of Sibuna, and now lives her life back home in America.
Eric Sweet is the headmaster of Amun Academic Boarding School and a former member of the Society, as well as the Seeker. He attended school and lived at Anubis House in his teen years, but did not know that Rufus was his father until much later in life. He moved to America for a time after he met an American woman Catherine “Cathy” Miller, and had a son. When he discovered his son, Eddie, was the Osirian, he knew that if Victor or Rufus were to discover that, he would be exploited. So he divorced Cathy and returned to England.
Eddie Miller (1994-) is a rambunctious and loyal young man who also acted as the Osirian, until he sacrificed his powers to appease Ra’s wrath. After Nina stepped down, he acted as the leader of Sibuna.

Young Justice: Larger s1 team AU: Outline.
This AU is based on the single premise that the team from s1 starts with eight team members: Robin (Tim Drake), Batgirl (Cassandra Cain-Wayne), Kid Flash (Wally West) Aqualad (Kaldur'ahm), Superboy, (Conner Kent), Supergirl (Kara Zor El/Danvers), Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), and Aya (Aya.)
New characters:
Wonder Girl: A super-hero fan and granddaughter of Zeus with a strict yet loving mother, tries to balance school and hero work.
Batgirl: Batman's adoptive daughter, one of the best martial artists but isn't good with people. Takes the no-kill rule very seriously.
Kara: Superman's cousin who witnessed Krypton's destruction, she's still learning to control her powers and get used to teamwork.
Tim: The third Robin after Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. With Nightwing active and Jason brought back to life and using the mantle of Red Hood, he wants to something of his own.
Aya: An android GL who Hal, her captain and almost paternal figure, elected to join the team to give her some earth experience.
Obvious differences:
The team by the end of Infiltrator is Robin (Tim Drake), Batgirl (Cassandra Cain-Wayne), Kid Flash (Wally West) Aqualad (Kaldur'ahm), Superboy, (Conner Kent), Supergirl (Kara Zor El/Danvers), Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), Miss Martian (M'Gann), Aya (Aya), and Artemis (Artemis Crock.)
The additional team members will have their own arcs alongside the original members, that I will try to insert neatly into the plot as season 1 already is. I might invent some new episodes; I have many ideas.
Cassie's arc: Proving herself against Wonder Woman's enemies, with some introspection about her mother's protectiveness.
Batgirl's arc: Standing her ground that her mentor's no kill rule is functional in the face of Lady Shiva telling her to be ruthless.
Kara's arc: Finding a sense of peace and purpose after losing Krypton. Also, not being reckless.
Tim's arc: Not feeling the need to try and escape his predecessors shadows.
Aya's arc: Making a connection with humanity, making a human android body to live closer.
This story, on account of the larger starting team, will give some more time to the Justice League mentors, fleshing them out a little more while keeping the main focus on the team.

Chapter Nine: I Don't Wanna Be Afraid Anymore
Tumblr media
'If it's still in your mind, it is still in your heart'
-Paulo Coelho
Clark landed just outside his home, Emma lying unconscious in his arms with the plant-like creature still attached to her chest. He brought her inside, bracing himself for his family's reaction. He found Sienna waiting for him in the hallway connecting the stairs and the front of the house. She gave him this look as if she knew precisely what had attached itself to Emma. Sienna no longer looked weak, she had changed into a set of Lois' old clothes and her hair was tied up in a bun.
She helped Clark bring Emma to the couch, the creature seemed to tighten with every move they made. Jordan and Jon came rushing into the living room, hoping to see Emma was okay. Their shock-filled gasps were loud as they saw Emma. Her skin looked glossed over, and her hair looked dead and dull. "What is that thing?" Jordan asked the Kryptonians, his fists clenched at either side of his body.
"The Black Mercy is an alien parasite that makes its host dream of their perfect fantasy world while it feeds off of them until the host dies. The only way to save her is to have Emma reject the fantasy world. Then the Black Mercy will slowly detach and die" Sienna explained sadly, her hand cupping Emma's nursing cheek. She let tears fall, her sobs failing to be concealed. "This is all my fault. I was supposed to keep her safe, instead, I played right into Mal's hands" Sienna cried, occupying herself by fixing Emma's hair.
Jordan walked over to the woman, placing a hand on her shoulder. "She was here, we had this... fight. Maybe if I stopped her from leaving this wouldn't have happened" He told the protector. Sienna only shook her head at the young El. "No, Mal would have done this anyways and Emma would never let you get hurt. She never wants anyone to be hurt by Mal" Sienna sighed, knowing her mother's own stubbornness passed onto her granddaughter.
Lois came into the room, noticing something in Emma's hands. "What are those? In her hands?" She said out loud, her husband seeing what she saw. In each hand was a scrunched-up piece of paper. He handed one to Sienna and opened the second. "It's a way to help her. We need to call your cousin Clark, only Kara and the DEO have the resources we need" Sienna told him, reading the paper over his shoulder, not mentioning the one in her hand.
<;><><>
"Emmie! Wake up!"
Emma felt a sharp pain in her side. She groaned awake, her eyes blinded by the light. "Huh? What's goin' on?" Emma yawned, opening her eyes fully. "It's morning Emmie! Come on Mammy made breakie!" a small and high voice spoke, shaking Emma. She turned to see long foxy hair and a face full of freckles. "Sophie?" Emma questioned, shooting up from the bed she was in. She looked around the room.
She was in her shared room with her baby sister, the lilac walls filled with multiple movie posters and her pride flags, her sister's side filled with multiple drawings done by the seven-year-old and the various family photos graced her view. She was taken out of her thoughts by her sister's tight grip pulling her out of bed and onto the floor. "Come on! I want rashers before Conner eats them all" Sophie whined. Emma whipped her head around to her sister, "Did you say, Conner?" She asked the minor child. Sophie nodded proudly before Emma shot up from the floor and ran downstairs. She stopped once she reached the kitchen.
Sitting at the table was her Jeju, reading a book with a cuppa in hand while across from her was Antony rushing to finish his homework. And at the cooker were two men, laughing and joking without a care in the world.
"Conner? Dad?" Emma choked, causing all attention to turn to her. She couldn't believe this, it wasn't possible, right?. "Ems! You're up!" Conner smiled brightly, rushing over to his sister. Conner wrapped his arms around her, lifting her up for a hug. Emma hugged him back, tears in her eyes as she hugged her older brother tightly. "You're here, you're really here" Emma cried, earning laughs from her brother. "I missed you so much Ems, the Engineer Corps is nothing compared to one of my favourite sisters" Conner smiled, putting Emma down.
Emma looked at him confused. "Engineer Corps? I thought you were in CIS?" Emma asked him, so sure he was on the computer side of things. "Looks like someone hasn't taken their iron tablets and coffee, that flu must have gotten to you. Come on Emsie" Her father smiled brightly at her. Emma walked over to him, hugging him as tightly as possible, "I love you Daddy" She told him. "I love you too babes, you sure your feeling okay?" Seán asked her, feeling her forehead.
Emma shrugged, "I dunno, I had this weird ass dream. I was in...Kansas? I think and there was this family... and...and?" Emma tried to think but her mind kept coming up blank. "That's dreams for you love, they seem so real until you wake up" Amy smiled, kissing Emma's forehead. "Yeah, weird it just seemed so real like it actually happened" Emma furrowed her eyebrows.
"Mam! Jon Jon's trying to take my laptop!" a woman called, rushing into the kitchen. The older blonde was followed by a younger ginger. "I need it for my CBA Kono! Auntie!" Jon Jon whined as his eyes pleaded with Amy. The nurse only sighed at her daughter and nephew.
"Alright, Jonathan take my laptop, Kono please get Sophie dressed, Conner, you will take your siblings and cousins to school, Seán get Emma ready for work" Amy took charge pointing at everyone before taking a sip of her tea. Emma looked at her Jeju confused once more.
"Work?"
<;><><>
Less than an hour after Clark had called Kara, a knock on the door echoed in the silent house. Clark opened the door and was quickly embraced by his cousin, Kara. "Oh, I hate meeting like this" Kara sighed, hugging her baby cousin tightly. "Me too Kara" Clark agreed before allowing her into the house.
Sienna smiled at Kara, a bright smile on her face. "Shara!" She squealed, seeing the Alor protector and going straight for the hug. "Kara Zor-El, how I have missed you" Sienna smiled, hugging the woman she had looked after since birth. Kara pulled back, happy to see her protector in person after so many years. "You look so much like Allura, she would be so proud" Sienna smiled at the youngest Kryptonian. Kara returned the compliment with a sad smile before looking at her godsons. "Look at you two! It feels like only yesterday you both were running around the farm chasing fireflies" Kara cooed, hugging them both tightly. "Good to see you too Aunt Kara" Jon smiled at the blonde, Jordan nodding beside him.
Kara quickly changed from a happy family reunion to serious once she saw Lois holding Emma's hand. "J'onn and Alex are setting up in the barn, they won't be long" She informed the adults before walking closer to Emma.
"So this is the infamous Emma, huh?" Kara asked hand on her hips as she looked down at Emma. "Yep, she's a huge Supergirl fan" Lois smiled at her friend, knowing that Emma would be jumping around the place if she knew Kara was here.
Sienna cleared her throat, catching everyone's attention. "Clark, ladies can I speak to you for a moment?" She asked, her head pointing to the kitchen. Jordan and Jon were left watching Emma while the adults went to the kitchen.
Sienna unfolded the second piece of paper Emma was holding. "It has to be Jordan, he's the only one who can get me out" Sienna read out loud for them, showing them the note. "Why only Jordan?" Kara asked her cousin and his wife. "He's the only one who knows her best, she trusts Jordan more than anyone" Clark explained. "Not to mention their feelings for each other. Emma told Jordan things that I still don't know, he's the only one who can convince her to reject the fantasy world" Sienna added carefully, knowing that they would be cautious about sending their son into a dangerous mindscape.
Kara looked at her cousin. "Alex was my only emotional tie to this world, she knows me better than I do. She can help Jordan be ready for what might be waiting. If anything happens, J'onn will pull him out" Kara promised them both. "This will be harder Kara, you were on Earth for years before Non targeted you. Emma has been here for less than three months. The Black Mercy wouldn't need to create some sort of explanation. Emma truly believes that this world was all a dream and she's back home" Sienna told them, knowing that she was right. "We don't know that for sure" Lois added only to be shut down by Sienna.
"This is the girl who has been looking up to you three for almost a decade. Smallville was her escape from reality, you and Kara were her escape, Lois. She has dreamed of being in our world countless times. Don't you think the Black Mercy will find ease in tricking her? Underneath the Kryptonian heritage, the pain, loss and fear she's a foster kid who could relate to the lives of Kara Zor-El whose family died saving her, Lois Lane who was raised by her single father and Clark Kent, a man who had a loving family" Sienna shot back at her, tears streaming down her eyes at the thought of failing her niece once more.
"She is vulnerable to her greatest wish. Her family"
<;><><>
Emma walked into a small pub, the sounds of laughter filling up the room. She seemed at ease as she followed her father behind the bar. "I dunno Dad, I'm still shaken up from that dream. It feels like an itch I can't scratch" Emma pouted at him. Seán chuckled at his daughter, lifting the plank of wood to allow her behind the bar. "We made a deal Emsie part-time at school, part-time at the bar" Seán reminded her. Emma looked at him confused, she was in school part-time? That didn't seem possible.
She looked at him, a weird feeling in her stomach. "That's something straight out of a comic Dad.. like Super... Sup..." Emma tried to get the word out, but it was on the tip of her tongue, She could see the word in her mind, and hear it in her ears but she could recognise it or say it. Why couldn't she say it?
"Emma! A little help please sweetie!"
Emma looked up to see her Aunt Natalie holding too many pints at once. Without thinking, Emma rushed over to her, grabbing half of the pint glasses. "You're not supposed to bite off more than you can chew Nats, knowing you we'd spend the next week cleaning up shards of glass" Emma smiled cheekily at her aunt. "Oh hush you cheeky little shit" Natalie laughed at her, flicking her bright foxy hair to the side.
Emma laughed at her aunt's dramatics, a warm feeling making her feel safe. She loved her family. They were all she needed. Her life felt so perfect.
<;><><>
Emma was moved to a makeshift containment area. She lay on the cold steel countertop, connected to an EKG and oxygen tank. Alex was connecting her to the same technology that brought her into Kara's mind years before, a sense of déjà vu. J'onn watched silently as the Black Mercy's vines wrapped around her neck. Emma was drifting away faster than Kara did. Sienna was right.
Lois and Clark pulled Jordan aside, nervous about the question they had to ask him. "What's going on? Why are you looking at me like that?" Jordan asked his parents, feeling bile in his throat. "Emma's second note was the solution to getting her out of the Black Mercy's hallucination" Clark explains to him slowly, looking to Lois to help him. "She said that it had to be you Jordan. Emma needs you to save her from her own mind" Lois admitted, looking at her son with fear and worry in her eyes. Jordan furrowed his eyebrows, processing the information. "Me? She wants me to save her?" Jordan questioned them. The pair nodded as Jordan looked back at Emma.
"What do I need to do?" He asked them, determined to get Emma back. Alex had walked over, a simple smile on her face. "You must convince Emma that the world she's in is fake. She needs to reject the Black Mercy willingly or else you will be there until... it kills her" Alex tried to put it gently. Jordan nodded, a pit growing in his stomach. "You can do this Jordan, Emma trusts you more than anyone" Sienna tried to raise his spirits as she put an oxygen mask over his face.
Alex brought over the device that would bring him into Emma's mind. "Once you're in there, the Black Mercy will try to stop you. No matter what you need to find Emma and convince her" Alex reminded him, placing the device on his head being weary of his curls.
In less than a minute, Jordan's eyes had closed confirming that he had entered Emma's mind. Now it was up to him and that scared the shit out of his family.
<;><><>
Jordan opened his eyes to see a small pub filled with people. He looked around, seeing a dart board near him and a glass case full of trophies and team scarves. Laughs of drunken people filled his ears as they shared stories with random strangers. But one laugh caught his attention.
Her laugh.
She stood behind the bar, a pint glass in hand as she filled it up chatting with someone in front of her. Her scars had disappeared, as did her tattoos. Her hair was the same pale dark blue and her eyes still had their icy glow.
He walked up to her, watching as she did a little dance to the music playing in the pub. She looked like she didn't have a care in the world. Like the heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders for good.
"What'd you like?"
Jordan was taken aback by the question, not realising that Emma had seen him. She looked at him with a big smile on her face. But she didn't recognise him at all. "Come on cutie? Do you want Rasa or something a lil' stronger?" She asked him. Jordan blushed at her, not expecting her to call him cutie at all.
"Don't you recognise me?" He asked her, making Emma furrow her eyebrows. "Are you in my year? Maybe I know your mam?" Emma shrugged at him. "It's me, Jordan... Jordan Kent" He told her, pleading at her with his eyes. Emma looked back at him, biting her lip. "Sorry, I never met a Jordan Kent before" She told him, walking away to another customer.
This was gonna be a lot harder than he thought.
<;><><>
Sienna tapped her foot impatiently as she watched Jordan and Emma breathing. Something wasn't right. Sienna knows her sister and this seemed way too easy. She walked over to her niece, inspecting the Black Mercy closer.
"What's wrong?" Alex asked the older Kryptonian. Sienna shook her head, "Mal isn't this lenient when it comes to tormenting her daughter. The Black Mercy is child's play to her. Mal has been trying to break Emma for fifteen years, it isn't logical for her to try and end it like this" Sienna explained, noticing the small yellow glow from the centre of the Black Mercy.
"Oh Mal, what have you done now" Sienna sighed, face palming at the sight. "What is it?" Lois asked, not liking Sienna's tone. "It's a stone that I thought had been lost with Krypton. The Stone Of Darkest Day" Sienna said harshly, her veins glowing purple.
"What's the Stone Of Darkest Day?" Jon asked her. "After the war with Daxam, the Stone Of Darkest Day was used to help the Protector Families confront their darkest days. My ancestor Elrisia the Enraged didn't believe it did the families any good and hid it ever since. My mother must have put it in Mal's pod before we left" Sienna told them. Kara walked up to the woman, "Do you know what Emma's darkest day was?" she asked her, Sienna shaking her head.
"That's what I'm afraid of"
<;><><>
Jordan followed Emma as she collected empty glasses. "Keep following me around and I'll call my brothers, they're vicious" Emma deadpanned at him. "Please it's me Jordan. You fell on my farm and found out that you're half-Kryptonian. This is all a dream from some weird alien plant" Jordan tried to convince her. Emma waved him off, trying to ignore him the best she could.
"Look, St Micheals, GF or whatever mad house you got out from they seriously need to fix your script" Emma told him, walking behind the bar once more. "I'm not crazy! If this isn't a dream then where are your scars? Or your tattoos?" Jordan called out to her.
Emma looked at him with an uncertain look. The girl bit her lip, finding some truth in his words. She looked at her exposed skin, feeling a weird sensation like she was missing something. She was about to ask him more when a hand was placed on his shoulder.
"Ems, you alright" Conner asked, smiling cautiously at Jordan. "I'm fine Con, just talking with Jordan" Emma smiled at her brother before he walked past her. "You don't belong here" He glared at Jordan. "Christ's sake Conner, he was only looking for maths grinds. The mocks are coming up, the poor lad needs them" Emma tried to calm her big brother down. This wasn't like him at all.
Conner grabbed Jordan by his collar, his face a bright red. Emma felt something within her snap before grabbing Conner and pulling him back. He looked at her with black eyes, making her jump in fright.
"You are not my brother" Emma spat at him.

Sienna paced back and forth, trying to find out a way to help Emma. Her powers could only do so much and they were running out of time. "Shara, calm down" Kara tried to stop her, seeing the small crater the woman was creating. "Kara's right, your no use if you keep this to yourself. You need to let us help you" Lois told the woman, seeing the burden she was carrying.
"No, this is all because I was too afraid of my own sister to save my nieces and nephews. This is my problem, an Alor problem, not El" Sienna told her, the sound of the EKG catching everyone's attention.
Emma's body began to shake, her veins glowing blue. Sienna noticed that the back of her right hand was glowing brighter. She walked closer to see the House of El crest clear as the day. "Impossible" Kara spoke from behind her protector. Sienna nodded, knowing what the heroine meant.
Sienna looked to J'onn, the man already knowing what she needed him to do. "Are you sure about this?" He asked her, and the only response was a nod from the Alor. "I have to" She told him.
<;><><>
Emma grabbed a crate from under the bar, hitting Conner over the head with it. As he fell to the floor, Emma jumped over the bar. Grabbing Jordan's hand, Emma dragged him out of the pub. The pair ran down the small cobbled road, far from Emma's family pub until they reached an abandoned café.
Emma panted her hands on her knees. She can't believe she got fooled by a fucking Black Mercy. She looked at Jordan, seeing the fear in his eyes. "Jord, you okay?" Emma asked him. Without hesitation, Jordan pulled Emma into a hug. His hand cradled the back of her head, his other was wrapped around her waist. Emma wrapped her hands around his neck, burying her head in the small curve between his neck and shoulder.
"I was so scared that I lost you" Jordan murmured, fearing that if he let go that Emma wouldn't remember him again. "Hey, you not losing me anytime soon. No alien plant is can accomplish that" Emma smiled softly, pulling away from his body. She placed her hands on his face, gently caressing his cheeks. "You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not. I still have werewolf jokes for your Dad" She joked, getting the boy to laugh at her comment.
Jordan rested his forehead on her hers, a feeling of relief that she was back. "So, how do we get out of here?" Emma wondered, noticing that her hometown was empty. "Alex said you need to reject the fantasy world" Jordan told her.
Emma looked at him with wide eyes. "Alex? As in Alex Danvers! The Alex Danvers!" She asked him, shaking him by his shoulders. "Yeah, and my Dad's cousin Kara" Jordan told her, afraid of the crazed look in her eyes. "Are you telling me Supergirl and her sister are trying to save me!" She squealed at him, her entire body feeling like she had drank one too many Red Bulls. Jordan nodded before Emma screamed very loud in excitement.
"As much as I love seeing you in full fangirl mode. You won't be able to meet them unless we get out of here" Jordan pointed out, stopping Emma from her little fangirl dance. "Right. How do we do that? I mean I know this world is fake. I have my memories, what do I have to do now?" Emma wondered.
The ground began shaking, the pair holding onto each other as it became worse. "Emma!". The teens turned to see Sienna standing in front of them. She didn't look like she was really there, her body was transparent. "Sienna! What's happening?" Emma asked her aunt.
"Your mother. Listen to me very carefully. You must go to the place where you had your darkest day. Only when you face that will you wake up" Sienna told her before the ground started to shake more. Before the pair could ask more questions, the woman disappeared.
Emma looked at Jordan before looking at the hill beside them. She took a breath before taking Jordan's hand again. "Come one, it's this way" Emma told him. Jordan could see the fear on Emma's face, he squeezed her hand making sure she knew that he was there.
<;><><>
After what felt like forever, the pair ended up on a terrace of dark red houses. Emma walked up to the one near the main road. She had Jordan step back before she hit the glass on the white door with her exposed elbow. It shattered quickly, with trickles of blood around the edges. Emma put her hand through, trying to feel the latch to open the door. "Em, your arm" Jordan pointed out when the clicking of the latch caught Emma's attention.
"It's nothing Jord" Emma responded, not thinking a wound in a fake world was gonna affect her actual body. She opened the door, the front hall was small and dark. She gestured for Jordan to follow her, holding out her hand. He took it, allowing Emma to guide the way.
They ended up in a small bathroom. The sink was smashed, and the mirror above it cracked with red blood dripping on it. Emma felt her body freeze seeing her reflection. Her eyes looked bloodshot, and dark purple bruises decorated her face as a fresh set of stitches sat on her cheek. She went to touch it, not feeling the white plaster that sat there.
"It's just a reflection" Jordan told her, only for Emma to shake her head. "No, it's a memory. My mam's fella was beating the shit out of me, I pissed him off for flushing his tablets down the toilet" Emma shrugged, kicking the loose blue one on the floor. Jordan squeezed her hand. "Hey, what happened wasn't your fault. Your mom should have never let this happen to you" He told her.
"But what happened next was me" Emma sighed, taking her hand away from Jordan's. She went to the corner of the room, sliding on the floor. Jordan copied her, sitting next to her on the blue-tiled floor. "After the beating, I couldn't take it. Everything was breaking around me, falling apart. I just wanted it to stop, I wanted her to stop breaking everything" Emma bit her lip, trying to stop her tears from falling.
"So I came in here. She was passed out on the couch. Her fella left and Conner was asleep. I didn't think about it, I don't even think I wanted to. I just grabbed a bottle of pills and took them all" Emma mumbles, curling up on the floor. She didn't want to be there, she hadn't been here in years. She didn't want Jordan to know what she did, it was shameful and selfish of her to try and take her life.
Jordan put his arm around her shoulders. Emma looked at him with tears in her eyes. "Conner found me, called the ambulance and stayed with me. My Jeju made sure I got the best of the best but I didn't feel like I deserved it. I almost left them behind. I almost left Anthony and Sophie to bury their big sister. She almost won, Mal almost got what she wanted" Emma continued, her stomach feeling like a huge crater in her body.
"What made you want to stay?" asked her.
Emma closed her eyes, taking a breath in. "Sophie. She was only three at the time. She came to the hospital to see me. The way she looked at me like... seeing me was the most important thing for her... I swore on my father's grave I would never let Mal hurt her, ever for as long as I was still standing" Emma answered, feeling that crater in her stomach fueled with anger.
Mal was not winning, not today. She had to stop being afraid of her mother, it wasn't doing her any good. Not in Smallville, and definitely not in life.
<;><><>
Jordan was the first to wake up, feeling like someone had taken cement off his chest as he sat up. Lois and Clark rushed to their son, hugging him tightly. He looked to his left, seeing Emma still unconscious. "Why isn't she awake?" He asked everyone. "Give her a minute" Alex answered from experience.
A high-pitched shriek comes from the Black Mercy, its vine-like tentacles unravelling themselves from her body. It crawled off to the floor, hiding in the closest dark corner. Emma woke with a gasp, immediately taking the oxygen mask from her face. She sat up only to be pulled into Sienna's arms, the older woman hugging her niece like a lifeline. "Aunt Sienna" Emma smiled, hugging the woman back.
Tears formed in the woman's eyes at what she was called. She kissed Emma's head a thousand times, thanking Rao for keeping Emma alive. Emma smiled at her aunt before her eyes landed on the Black Mercy. Without hesitation, Emma's eyes flared red and lasers struck the Black Mercy. With a dying shriek, the alien plant was left as a burnt-looking piece of metal.
"I always hated the Black Mercy" Emma muttered, causing everyone to laugh at her. Jon went up to his friend, hugging her tightly. "You scared the shit of me Fangirl" He told her. "Nah, I still got a whole list of football jokes to let out" Emma smiled at him, gently pushing him away. "Not to mention I can finally slang your Dad for leaving the coolest member of his family" Emma glared at Clark playfully making the man sigh. "Any chance we can put you back under?" He asked only for Emma to start laughing at him.
Alex snickered at her comment. "I like this one Clark, now you have to keep her" She commented, nudging the hero. Emma felt her body jumping with excitement at the sound of Alex's voice. Jon was quick to step back, knowing full well what was about to happen. "Oh no, she's entered fangirl mode" Jon commented as his twin smiled at the sight.
"Your actually Alex Danvers! Oh, my gods, I'm actually meeting the Alex Danvers. I think I might faint" Emma started freaking out, forgetting that Kara was there. "I knew she was a fan but seriously J'onn you left some stuff out" Kara told the martian who only chuckled in response. Emma fell back onto the medical table trying to compose herself in front of her literal heroes.
"I can't believe I'm in the same room as Supergirl and Alex Danvers. I can die happily" Emma murmured
<;><><>
"I can't believe I met Kara and Alex Danvers!" Emma squealed as she sat on the porch of the Kent house. Jordan sat next to her as she held the small little box that held not only the sisters' signatures but a gift Kara had belonged to her grandmother, Naeza Alor. Emma seemed to notice the stare Jordan was giving her.
"What? You're doing that thing" Emma pointed out, placing the box behind her. Jordan looked at her confused. "What thing?" He asked her. Emma laughed at the small little crinkle on his forehead. "When you look at me and you do that thing" Emma told him, nudging him a bit. "I have no idea what you're talking about" Jordan shrugged, giving up as Emma rested her head on his shoulder.
"Do you think differently of me?" Emma asked Jordan, biting the inside of her cheek. Jordan looked at her, "Why would you think that?" He asked her. Emma shrugged, lifting her head and resting it on her knees. "After what you saw in my head, I wouldn't be surprised" Emma mumbled. Jordan looked at her, gently pushing back a strand of hair behind her ear. "No, if it means anything I think that you being here, shows that you are strong and resilient. And I'm not going to judge you for that, ever" Jordan told her.
Emma turned to him, a small smile on her face. "You still like me?" She asked him, "Yeah, I still like you" Jordan told her, kissing her forehead. "Good, 'cause I don't wanna be afraid anymore" Emma whispered. Before he could react, Emma grabbed Jordan's face pulling him in for a kiss. Jordan didn't hesitate in kissing her back. His hands were on her cheek as he kissed her back.
When they pulled apart, Jordan kept his forehead on hers. "Good, I was kinda tired of just being friends" He let out a small laugh. Emma only shook her head gently at him, "Me too" she said before kissing him again.

Let me tell you, this dinner party is putting Tramalchio to shame 😎
Tumblr media
Look beyond the cut for details...
As Medea prepares the dinner party, Jabberwocky questions her mother's motives for inviting their enemies to dinner at all, however, Medea just smiles and sends her to look after Maria (poor JW, how sad to be an almighty powerhouse of chaos when you're stuck babysitting)
Tumblr media
Emma and Regina don't waste any time trying to 'wake' Kara, even mention the Black Mercy, but Kara refuses their 'story', especially when Lucy comes in - SQ immediately recognise their granddaughter (it's not ideal circumstances, but this way, at least Emma and Regina could meet Lucy - who might or might not ever exist in their timeline)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in the peacekeepers camp, Jasmine and Tiana strategise and Mal suggest burning Camelot's army to a crisp - there she goes, true queen, Hook doesn't even desrve her
Tumblr media
Gathered aboard the Hispaniola, Medea's guest try for civility and toast to new friends (LOL) and otherwise exchange pleasantries, Zelena, always needing to be the firestarter brings up Kara, but she also manages to calm the situation down, for the time being... (As I said, after this, Tramalchio's dinner party will seem enjoyable)
Tumblr media
Back in Kara's mind, SQ pull out the big cards - Lena and Alex, but no no avail, only Lucy starts asking the hard questions - trying to calm Lucy, or probably just wanting to get rid of the two weirdos who claim to be her long dead mothers, Kara asks what she needs to do...
Tumblr media
...but it turns out they can't leave Kara's apartment, on the contrary, Henry and Ella arrive amd act like SQ were a part of this dream version of their lives all along - the worst part? Emma and Regina fall under the Black Mercy's spell as well, bloody hell
Tumblr media
Lancelot is having the same amount of luck trying to reason with his wife - surprise surprise, try a true love's kiss, or distracting her with sex at least, damnit, Lance
Tumblr media
On the opposite side of the battlefield, Will, Alice and Robin try to get to Anastasia who turned fully into the Red Queen and is as adamant as Guinn, but at least Merida reveals she's not actually under Medea's control and promises Mulan to take care of her wife - good luck with that, love
Tumblr media
Hook finally reached it's boiling point (LOL I'm hilarious today) and makes a scene while the other party guests try to not to get set on fire and enjoy the meal insted ONLY for the delicious roast turns out to be SMEE! Jesus almighty! That...that is a step too far, I mean, nothing is too far for the Satan's lover but Christ! And worst of all, all of the guests are now CANNIBALS! So many cleansing will need to be done...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Desperate Alex makes a deal with Rumple to get into Kara's dreamscape - and thank goodness for that, cause SQ are now trapped in there too, but luckily, wake up once Alex bursts their little bubble - the whole situation quickly turns into a Coraline-esque fight with the fake younger Swan-Millses which FINALLY wakes Kara up as well
Tumblr media
In the hospital, Kara waits all of one minute to get her head around what just happened and then is dead set on finding Medea (and tearing that bitch apart, fingers crossed) - welcome back, sweetie
Tumblr media
Something Wicked This Way Comes, Chapter 28
Tumblr media
Storybrooke Harbour. Aboard The Hispaniola. (While Medea uses her magic to set the table, the Jabberwocky sits reclined on one of the chairs.) Jabberwocky: “Are you sure you don’t need me here? You know how I enjoy our suppers.” Medea: “Whatever their insidious intent against me… And I don’t doubt their narrow, little minds have one… Tonight’s dinner shall work for my purposes, too.” Jabberwocky: “How can you still invite them here knowing they mean you harm, Mother?” Medea: “Oh, it will take a harder heart than theirs to trouble me. A heart like mine.” Jabberwocky: “And mine.” Medea: “Hm. Do not worry yourself and keep your focus on the child. If any of my guests choose to act on their nefarious urges against me then rest assured that this may turn out to be their last supper.” “Kara’s Apartment. Continued.” (After allowing them inside and listening to what Emma and Regina have to say, Kara stands with her arms folded and a dubious look upon her face.) Kara: “Uh, I’m sorry, did you say ‘coma’?” Emma: “Yes, but we’re here to help you.” Kara: “I’m not in any coma, I’m standing in my apartment.” Regina: “No, Kara, you’re not. You’re being trapped in this fantasy life while in a comatose state by a creature known as the Black Mercy.” Kara: “If I’m in a coma, how are you here?” Emma: “We used the sands of Morpheus to enter your dreams.” Regina: “We believe Medea set the Black Mercy on you before you could rescue Maria on the bridge. Don’t you remember?” Kara’s Apartment. Recent Past. (While awaiting the call to head to the bridge, Kara pulls a bottle of water from the fridge and takes a sip. Seeing a gift on the coffee table, she walks over to it and pulls open the wrapping. Picking up the box, she notices a sticky residue seeping through the cardboard.) Kara: (Disgusted:) “What the hell?” (Placing the box back down on the table, she hesitates for a moment before opening it. Taken by surprise, Kara barely registers being attacked by a plant-like creature before everything turns black.) “Kara’s Apartment. Continued.” (Kara shakes her head, trying to shut out the memory.) Kara: “No, this is crazy. This…” Young Girl: (Calling from across the hall:) “Kara, what’s wrong? (Entering the room:) Who was at the… (Emma and Regina turn to see a young girl standing before them, her eyes wide:) …door.” Emma: “You. You’re the girl we saw in the Crystal Cave.” Young Girl: (Cautiously:) “Hello.” Regina: (Smiles:) “Hello.” Emma: “Hey.” Young Girl: “Are you… my grandparents?” (Caught completely by surprise, Emma and Regina’s jaws drop when they realise they are in the presence of their granddaughter Lucy.)

Who's thara and Chris? And why have I not heard of them before? (I haven't followed the main DC comic books for years... I'm so lost).
Alrighty so!
Chris Kent is the adopted son of Clark and Lois Kent. His biological parents are, I kid you not, General Zod and his wife, Ursa. He was born in the Phantom Zone (he actually becomes Nightwing, definitely suggest looking him up!) I’d like to think he and Kon show up around the same time, turning Jon into the youngest of three boys (Chris is the oldest, Kon the middle).
Thara Ak-Var is actually Kara’s best friend from Krypton! After her parents were killed and she he had these prophetic dreams of a boy concieved and born in the phantom zone. Basically a lot of things happen, but she’s a soldier in New Krypton. She also becomes the avatar for Flamebird, the Kryptonian Goddess of Destruction.
Chris just joins his brothers in the “My type is dark-haired beauty who gives orders and kicks ass.” Just like their father 😂
I’m pretty sure they dated in the comics, I just decided to keep them together. I mean, girl was dreaming about him!!
In addition, because I thought it would be funny to see, they adopted three kids (two half-Brainiacs, one meta) and had three of their own. Just to, like, put it in perspective for the biological kids: Thara and Chris are both full Kryptonians.
Basically, in my mind? Clark and Lois end up with:
three full Kryptonian grandkids
two half Brainiacs grandsons
one Tamaranean/Kryptonian/Human granddaughter(the only one without any powers, but jumps off buildings for fun)
one Kryptonian/human/Amazonian granddaughter (Tim and Kon’s daughter, Grace)
four meta grandchildren.

Some memories.
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader
Word Count: 1800.
Lillian drops you off at L Corp after lunch. She has a look on her face that could only be described as proud. You can almost hear her thinking that she doesn’t consider Lena has done such an awful job raising you, actually, scratch that, she looks like she knows Lena has done a good job with you, and she’s proud of you both. Although, she would be caught dead before saying something likewise.
You hear a soft knock on the window and see Lena on the other side. “Mother?”
“Lena.” It’s all Lillian says. You wait for more, there’s no more.
“Hey mom.” You finally get out of the car. Lena promptly throws her arms around you, protectively. “It’s ok. I’m ok.”
“Well, there she is. Safe and sound.” Lillian tilts her head. “Granddaughter.”
It’s automatic. Like a move that you’ve done so many times before that is embedded in your body. You salute her off, and the word “Grandmother” leaves your mouth as well.
Hm.
Memories. You need your memories.
You let go of Lena with a smile. “I promise it’s all alright, but I need to make something in the lab. Now.” You kiss her cheek. “Love ya, bye.”
And you run into L Corp at normal human speed, but you are annoyed that you can’t go any faster in front of people.
“Hi Aly. I’ve got an idea! See you later!” You yell almost inside the elevator. Still, you hear a chuckle, and a wave.
“A Luthor-Danvers, for sure.” She comments to herself, and you catch that with your super hearing. She is right. You can imagine Kara running into L Corp and yelling hello at the front desk lady, and you can also see Lena looking excited because she had an idea. You fake not being a Luthor so much that sometimes you forget you are the perfect combination between them both.
You work the rest of the day. And at night Lena has to almost drag you out of your lab, while you argue that this might be the most important invention you got around to. She doesn’t budge, as she makes you go inside the car.
“You can come back tomorrow.” Lena says and you huff, crossing your arms.
“The mind doesn’t stop. You’re making a genius stand down.” You say, overly dramatic, as always.
“No. I’m making a genius eat, shower and sleep.” Lena’s hand goes to your cheek, and she strokes it slowly. “Stop pouting, you can finish tomorrow. It will be alright.”
“Geniuses don’t sleep.” You mumble.
“They do if they’re 16 and have school in the morning.” Lena laughs at your pout getting bigger. “Baby, you look too cute with a pout. This is not convincing me to let you go back to the lab, but rather to stop this car and hug you tight.”
“Lillian would’ve let me work.”
“Lillian would’ve sat behind you, telling you all the wrong things you’re doing, and that you can only eat again once you figured it out.” Lena sighs, exhausted. You know she is right. Maybe this Lillian wouldn’t do that to you, but still you know she was not going to be as cool.
“Sorry. You’re right.” You breathe out. Your mom looks at you from the corner of her eyes. “I’ll come back tomorrow. Thanks for looking out for me.”
“Always, babygirl.” Lena takes her hand off the wheel again, to hold yours tight, assuring you that she is not mad with what you said, and you let it go. You got Maya back already. Not having all of her memories for another day or two won’t kill her.
But Maya has other plans. And as soon as you mention to her the possibilities of having all of her memories of you back, she is the one that won’t budge.
“Babe, we’re not going to skip class to do that. We can do it after.”
“No, we have to do it now. We’re wasting time.” She tries to pull you by the hand. You don’t move an inch. “Can you pretend I’m at least accomplishing something except looking like a fool here?”
You chuckle. “If we go to the lab right now, my mom will know.”
“So, sneak us in.” Then she whispers in your ear. “Use your superspeed.”
“I’m starting to think you only want me for my powers.” You joke and she rolls her eyes.
She looks around furtively, before throwing her arms around your neck and giving you a little kiss. “Please?” She begs with another kiss. “For me?”
“If you think I’ll do whatever you want because you said, ‘please for me’ while kissing me, you are completely wrong.”
“Am I now?” Maya asks looking around, after you definitely sneaked her into your lab, no more than ten seconds later.
“Ugh, you’re just so cute.” You make your way next to her, pulling her close. “This was a bad idea, I can’t work with you looking so pretty next to me.”
“Ok, I’ll blindfold you.”
“That solves it.” You joke and she chuckles, kissing you again. “Ok, ok, for this to work you have to stop kissing me.”
“Okay.” Maya shrugs and moves away. You hold her hand.
“One more for the road?” You ask, and she laughs at you again.
“Let’s make it two.”
Turns out two turned into three, four, five, until you lost count. It’s only when your phone rings a text that you both move away for real.
Mom: If I go to your lab right now, will I find you there?
You look at the time. Shit. School’s not over yet. What will you say?
You: What? Pfff. Please. Don’t be absurd.
Mom: …
You: Did you put a camera on me?
Mom: …
You: Yes, mom. You’ll find me here.
You look at Maya with wide eyes. “Lena’s coming. I better start working, and you better, um, hide in the bathroom.”
“Oh. Ok!” Maya runs to the bathroom that is inside your lab, while you take all of the equipment you need, and starts working on your project again.
“So-” Lena walks in a few minutes later. You raise your head at her, feeling your face all red only from imagining what she’ll say. “What’s so important that made you skip school?”
“It’s something that will help bring mine and Maya’s memories back from the other timeline.” You explain, and watch her coming closer, agreeing with her head. “It’s what Lillian did to remember me.”
“Huh.” That takes her by surprise. “So what is it? Can’t erase time lived?”
“Yeah.”
Lena comes closer, kisses the crown of your head. And smiles lightly at you. “Where did you hide her?”
“What are you talking about?” You pretend.
“Oh, baby, you’re gonna have to do a lot better than that to fool me.” She says and you sigh, defeated. “Please tell me you didn’t put the poor girl in the closet.”
You try to hold your laugh at the pun, but fail. “Bathroom.”
“Maya, come out of the bathroom, sweetheart.” And out comes your girlfriend, looking flushed and embarrassed like you were.
“How did you know?”
“Well, first because I’m not stupid.” She winks at you. “Second because there’s two school bags on the floor.” She points to the backpacks next to the door. “I had a hanger installed, please use it.”
“Yes, ma’am.” You agree with your head.
“Finish your project today because trust me, none of you will be skipping school tomorrow.”
“Yes, ma’am.” You and Maya say in unison.
Lena leaves the lab a little after that. Maya has her eyes glued to the door for a while.
“You know,” She finally turns to you. “When I met your mom Kara, I thought she was fascinating.”
“Funny, so does she.” You joke, she chuckles.
“But now I think Lena might be the most fascinating woman I’ve ever met.”
“What about me?” You ask, a little shocked.
“I bet you’ll get there when you’re her age.” You smile, blushing. “And I’ll be there to tell you how awesome you are.”
“Awww.” You don’t know if it’s possible, but you feel yourself blushing even harder. “Stop distracting me.”
She laughs at the joke, and you finally start working. It takes you a while, but with the right motivation in mind; Maya looking at you even more in love than how she’s looking at you now; And finishing so you don’t have to come back tomorrow; You get it done.
“Ok! It’s ready!” You say, and Maya stops reading whatever tragedy she is into now and comes closer to you. “Do you trust me?”
“With my life.”
Your heart almost beats out of your chest when you hear that. That’s such a huge thing for you, and you think she knows by the way her smile grows, and her dimples show. Oh my God, she is beautiful.
“Ok then. Together?” You point the device to the both of you and Maya gives you the endorsement you need.
Memories flash in your mind at an alarming rate.
“Do you even know why I hate you?”
“Because of my family.”
“No! Because you make me question everything they’ve told me! How-how can a Luthor not be evil? How can a Luthor be this smart and not use her knowledge to try to take over the world? How can a Luthor be so-ugh! So sweet, and kind and pretty?”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.”
“I made you a playlist. In case you want to think about me, those are my favorite songs.”
“Oh, I think about you all the time, trust me.”
“Guess we’re a family now.”
“Ok, well, you’re assuming I was adorable.”
“Oh, please. I know you were adorable just by looking at you now.”
“Babe, I’m-I’m-”
“I fucking knew it! You’re Superkid!”
You blink your eyes slowly, taking in all of the memories at once. When it’s done, you turn to Maya.
“I knew.” She smiles from ear to ear. “You told me your secret identity twice.”
“Yeah. Let’s hope I don’t have to do it again a third time.” You smile and Maya throws her arms around you, first kissing your cheek and then your mouth.
“I think I hate you.” She starts, as a joke.
“No, you don’t. You love me. You said it first in both timelines.” You brag, blushing.
“Let’s hope that if a third time comes, you’ll do it this time.” You both laugh and kiss and kiss and kiss.
“Babe.” You call, separating your mouth from hers just a tiny inch so you can get your words out. “Just so you know, I’m pretty sure our son visited me from the future a while ago.”
“We have a son?” She asks in shock.
“I think we might have more than one.”
“Oh!”
“Yeah, oh.” And when she smiles, you kiss her again. Rao, how much you love this girl!

the followup/repercussions/2012 summer counterpart to this
______________
“Gran, who are we visiting again?” Nina asks, closing the door of the taxi behind her.
“An old friend,” Gran explains. “Do you remember a girl called Kara? You were in preschool together.”
Nina shakes her head no. “Was this before or after we moved?”
“Before,” Gran says. “No, I suppose you wouldn’t. Anyway, this is her grandfather. We met—actually, I don’t quite remember how we met.” Gran looks confused for a second. “Well, in any case, he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, and we eventually became good friends, although we did lose touch after the move. When I heard he was sick again, though—”
Nina nods. She doesn’t fully understand why she’s being dragged here in the middle of their vacation to visit an old crush of her grandmother’s (ew), but she also doesn’t particularly care. It’s a welcome distraction from everything else going on in her life. “Are you sure you don’t want your cane?” she asks, warily eyeing her grandmother’s teetering footsteps as they enter the hospital foyer.
“No, sweetheart, I’m alright.”
No, you’re not, Nina thinks. Not since last year. Yet another point to add to the ever-growing list of things Nina’s done wrong.
They reach the check-in desk and Gran says, “We’re here to see Mr. Charles Rush, 1st Floor Palliative Care, room 80 or 90 or something. Evelyn and Nina Martin—we should be on the list.”
The receptionist nods. “You’re on B2 right now, so you’re going to want to take the elevator up to the first floor. Palliative Care is the East wing, and Mr. Rush is in Room 90. There will be someone there to help you out as well.”
Nina looks at the print on the badge the receptionist hands her and nearly drops it in shock: 1E-90. One Eight Nine Zero. 1890.
She immediately squeezes her eyes shut. It’s all in your head, It’s all in your head, It’s all in your head, she repeats silently. The locket is cool against her chest (not warm or glowing), she hasn’t heard any strange voices or had any supernatural dreams, and she’s miles away from Anubis. The room number is just a random coincidence, and a reach at that.
“Qu’est-ce qu’il y a? Are you okay?”
Nina opens her eyes to find both her grandmother and the receptionist staring at her.
“C’est rien. Something just flew into my eye,” Nina lies. “Let’s go find the elevator.”
____________
The ward is bustling with nurses and visitors floating in and out, which helps quell Nina’s unease a little bit. Surely nothing shady will happen with so many people around—but then again, the amount of times she nearly died at school is too many to count. Get a grip, she tells herself.
They enter Room 90 and Nina sees the mysterious Mr. Rush for the first time.
“Oh, Charlie, it’s so good to see you,” Gran says excitedly, sitting in the chair closest to him and taking his hand in hers. “And you remember my granddaughter Nina.” Nina gives him a little wave but stays put in her position against the wall by the foot of the bed.
“Yes, of course.” His voice is dry and papery, and something about the way he looks at her strongly reminds Nina of Sarah. She rubs her locket absentmindedly.
“Nina, come closer. He can’t see you clearly from that corner,” Gran chides. Nina obediently goes and stands next to her.
“That’s very pretty,” Mr. Rush says.
Nina realizes she’s still holding the locket and blushes. “Oh. Thank you.”
Mr. Rush smiles vaguely, a vacant look in his eyes. “My sister, Sarah—” and before he can continue, he dissolves into a coughing fit.
“Oh, no, Charlie, are you okay?” Gran cries, immediately helping him sit up and drink some water. “Nina, could you press that button—Nina! What are you doing?”
“Huh?” Nina stands rooted in place, Mr. Rush’s words rolling around in her mind. Sister, Sarah?
“It’s okay, it’s okay.” Mr. Rush waves Gran away. “Don’t bother the nurses. It’s normal.”
“Are you sure?” Gran asks, evidently still concerned.
“I could do with some hot chocolate,” Mr. Rush says with a wink. “Would you go get some for me?”
“You and your sweet tooth,” Gran laughs. “Oh, alright. I’ll be right back. Nina, come sit here and keep him company.”
“Mhmm.” Nina sits in the chair, still dazed. As soon as she hears the door closed behind her, she leans forward and asks, “I’m sorry, did you say your sister—?”
Mr. Rush suddenly moves his hand and grips her wrist. “Listen, they are mobilizing as we speak. We don’t have much time, Chosen One. ”
Nina freezes. “Who are you? Who is mobilizing? How do you know who I am?”
“My sister’s,” Mr. Rush murmurs, nodding and staring at her chin. Nina looks down and gasps. The locket is glowing—but not the eye; rather, just its hinges.
“That’s weird,” Nina mutters. She opens it and a small piece of photography paper falls into her palm. “R.F.S. and C.F.S.,” she reads. Turning it over, she sees a picture of a tall, distinguished man and what appears to be a newborn child tightly swaddled in his arms.
She looks up at the man in front of her. “C F S. Charles Frobisher-Smythe. Is that true?”
“My father—when my mother died, he changed my name and sent me here.”
“Sarah’s your half-sister,” Nina guesses. “And you’re a Frobisher.”
He simply nods.
“So my Gran’s old friend is the son of someone whose actions almost got me killed, twice, and now he’s telling me I might die. Again.” Nine stares at him. “How do I know you won’t do the same thing?”
The locket grows exponentially warm at her words, almost burning Nina’s skin. She gasps and snaps it shut. It cools immediately. “Okay, okay. I trust you.”
Mr. Rush smiles slightly. “Now listen carefully. A great evil is about to be unleashed, and you will be”—he coughs—“you will be in more danger than anyone else. Your Osirian—”
“That’s it! His whole job is to protect me, isn’t it?” Nina says. “So we’ll be okay?”
Mr. Rush shakes his head. “You cannot be together. The best way for him to protect you is to stay as far away from you as possible.”
“What? How does that make any sense?” Nina’s agitated now, her pulse racing. The one thing she had been holding onto the entire summer was that Eddie would be back at school with her next year, that with the two of them together, no one else would have to get hurt by whatever chooses to plague her next.
“The great evil”—another cough—“requires a sacrifice of five to enter this world. But if it has the Paragon and Osirian together—your souls and spirits—it requires only two.” His eyes bore into her. “Do you understand?”
“They would just need us,” Nina says quietly, suddenly understanding. “If they get both of us together—”
“Yes. It will be the end of the world as we know it. And if you are caught first—”
“—Eddie will be forced to come and help me. He’ll be walking straight into their trap.” Nina’s head starts spinning. “Mr. Rush, how do we stop it? Please, I need to warn my friends,” she pleads.
“I wish I could tell you more,” Mr. Rush croaks, “but they have their ways. I have arranged for one of my own to help.”
“One of your own?” Nina asks. “What do you mean? How can they help, without my locket, my powers?”
Before he can answer, Gran enters the room again, and Nina quickly jumps up to let her sit. “Charlie, they don’t have any hot chocolate,” Gran says.
Mr. Rush rolls his eyes. “Ah, well, I tried.” He moves his hand closer to Gran’s so their fingers just brush past each other. Gran blushes.
“Alright, I’ll leave you two alone. It sounds like you have some catching up to do,” Nina says, plastering a smile on her face that she hopes hides the terror she feels. She holds up her phone and, lying through her teeth, adds, “Plus, I have to call my boyfriend back.”
Gran frowns. “It’s past midnight over there, isn’t it?”
“Yes,” Nina nods, mentally scrambling for an excuse. “Yes. It is past midnight. He’s, um, nocturnal.”
“Oh, alright. Wait downstairs, I’ll come and find you,” Gran says.
“Bye, Mr. Rush, it was nice meeting you,” Nina says, then bolts out the door.
