Okay so this is kinda/sorta the last of my 'Shoujo/Josei I read/enjoyed in 2024' list, save for about four titles that had their first volume drop within the last month or so. I'm debating if I wanna draw those. XD Either way, names! Colette Decides to Die, King in Limbo, Mermaid Prince, and Wolf's Daughter: A Werewolf's Tale*!
*This one, Magical Girl Dandelion, and Wolf and Revolver were all originally going to be a part of my 'unlicensed manga' section, but since making this list, two have official English releases that are either already available, or will be coming out this year!

Manga: "Mermaid Prince" by Kaori Ozaki
Two coming-of-age stories (and one little fantasy sequel), with tough feelings and lots of teen awkwardness. The first story, "Ametsukigahara," starts with friends Fumika and Akari going ona small trip to the seaside, discovering that their once-strong bond is easily shattered. The focus goes to Akari, who deals with apathy over her future, the aftermath of an assault on the train, and social isolation, before eventually managing to have an emotional breakthrough.
The title story, "Mermaid Prince," is about a boy who has moved to an island with his sister and her new husband, who feels like a third-wheel in the new family. One of his classmates grows interested in him, and the two bond, eventually going on an adventure to ask a wish of a mermaid.
My favorite story actually comes in the middle, and is a small sequel to "Ametsukigahara." Akari, now a librarian, spends a day reading to a homeless child and his father, though the pair are more than they appear.
I don't think I'd go out of my way for this book, but it would make a nice enough library pickup. It's good if you want just a touch of fantasy. Not quite magical realism, but just a shade or two beyond.
Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.

The Gods Lie Thoughts
The story follows a Natsuru Nanao, a soccer player whose new coach is an asshole so when it comes time to summer camp, he doesn't go. He's invited to stay with a classmate, Rio Suzumura who he paid to care for a stray cat, as he is too afraid to go back to his mom. They spend a short time together as he comes apart of Rio and her brother's small family unit, as their father is working out-of-the-country. However it quickly turns dark, when he discovers a human skeleton in the garden. Rio admits that shortly after her father left, her grandpa fell down the stairs and passed away, and with no adult in the house and the fear of being talked about, she buried him.
This quickly turns so sad and disheartening. Poor Rio, fought so hard to take care of her brother and protect their families' reputation. Just for it to not work...and her father to have actually abandoned them this whole time and for CPS to intervene. It's tragic that her name that gets slandered, I think it's very telling that society blames women. Even when they're the victim, all people can do is just wag their tongues, not realizing how much it hurts. Natsuru, in the lead up to everything being exposed to the public, fought off bullies and stood up for her to keep his promise towards her.
I feel so numb after finishing this. It hurts so much knowing these characters pain and a testament to an engaging and heartfelt one-shot.

Immortal Rain AKA, the series that middle school me was always mixing up with Trigun. XD Had no clue it was a shoujo until I read Mermaid Prince this year and looked up the creator's other works. Was nice to revisit it and finally read the whole thing!

i just read immortal rain and i'm so happy(!!!!!) to find other people talking about it. it is my all time favourite manga and nothing, nothing comes close; the story truly is larger than life in its anti-nihilistic message. and just like op, i lack the words both in english and in my native language to truly capture how magnificent and earth shattering of a story it is. but i have to try: immortal rain is a story about grief, loneliness, immortality, humanity and self destruction.
but most importantly, it is a story about how, inevitably, to exist is to love.
(it is also a story about badass motherfuckers and how they are always women)
Re-read Immortal Rain and told myself to space it out. Take it slow. Did not take advice, as usual. Fully and completely shish kabobbed myself on the spear of bittersweetness. IR fans does that even make sense to you. I've yet to find another manga series that so slowly but surely rips me apart and then lovingly places the pieces back together. Anyway I'll never be able to fully express what this series does/means/is to me so I am going to Stop.
#immortal rain#kaori ozaki#i rarely attempt to write anything in english and instead stick to posting my art because words are difficult#but immortal rain is too important to not talk about#i mean it when i say earth shattering#if you liked full metal alchemist and hate nihilism with all your heart this might be the manga for you#even in your darkest hour there is love to be found#because loving and being loved is inevitable
