This is a colourization I did of the late Indian cinema actress Sridevi Kapoor. Today (August 13 2023) would have been her 60th birthday. Sridevi was born in Meenampatti, Madras State (present day Tamil Nadu) on August 13 1963. She became a child actress at 4 years old starring in Tamil films. As she grew up she began a long career in Indian cinema including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She was considered a Bollywood Superstar. In 1996 she married Boney Kapoor and they had 2 daughters Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Both of her daughters are now Bollywood actresses. On February 24 2018 while attending a wedding in Dubai Sridevi fell and drowned in her hotel bathroom. Her funeral was one of the largest funerals with up to 7000 fans showing up to pay respects.
Sridevi was one of my favourite Bollywood actresses. Google made a "doodle" for her today on their front page.

what's your craziest dad lore?
for me, my dad biked through the woods where veerapan was hiding from the police, at night, and KNEW ABOUT IT
(long)
(Veerappan began his criminal career by assisting his uncle Saalvai Gounder, a notorious poacher and sandalwood smuggler.
Veerappan initially worked as a sandalwood and ivory smuggler, killing elephants for their tusks. He later broke away from his uncle. Over the next 25 years, Veerappan and other poachers together killed 2,000 to 3,000 elephants, with Veerappan and his gang responsible for approximately 500 of them.
He was first arrested in 1972. After committing his first murder, at the age of 17, he began killing those who resisted his illegal activities. His victims tended to be police officers, forest officials, and informants. In 1987, Veerappan kidnapped and murdered a Sathyamangalam Taluka forest officer named Chidambaram from Tamil Nadu. This brought his activities to the attention of the Indian Government. He drew further attention by murdering a senior IFS officer, Pandillapalli Srinivas, in November 1991. Next, there was the August 1992 ambush of a police party, which included a senior IPS officer, Harikrishna.Veerappan was not averse to killing civilians, and killed a man from his native village for traveling in a police jeep. He regularly killed anyone suspected of being a police informer. Because of political instability, Veerappan could easily escape from one state to another. State jurisdiction problems also prevented police officers from entering other states to apprehend Veerappan. In Govindapadi, Mettur, Veerappan killed a Bandari person whom he suspected of being a police informer. As a result, a 41-member team of police officers and forestry officials were called in to investigate. On 9 April 1993, landmines were detonated underneath the two vehicles in which the team was traveling. The blast occurred at Palar, near Malai Mahadeswara Hills (present-day Chamarajanagar District, Karnataka) and killed 22 members of the team. Known as the Palar blast, this was Veerappan's single largest mass killing. in 1992, the Karnataka and the Tamil Nadu Governments formed a Special Task Force to catch Veerappan. It was headed in Tamil Nadu by Sanjay Arora and in Karnataka by Shankar Bidri with Walter Devaram as the joint chief. In February 1992, his lieutenant Gurunathan was killed by the Karnataka task force, with SI Shakeel Ahmed single-handedly responsible for the capture. Three months later, Veerappan attacked the Ramapura police station in Kollegal, killing several policemen and capturing arms and ammunition. In August 1992, Veerappan laid a trap for SI Shakeel Ahmed, killing him along with five others. The Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Special Task Forces then began intensified combing operations along the two states' border areas and also around Gopinatham village, Veerappan's birthplace. Through these operations, under charge of Sanjay Arora and Shankar Bidari, the gang was reduced to 5 members. Meetings with Gopinatham villagers were held, and the 5-crore bounty was announced. In 1993, the task force arrested Veerappan's wife, Muthulakshmi, and charged her with aiding, but she was acquitted of all charges.
On 30 June 2000, Veerappan abducted Kannada cinema actor Rajkumar and three others from Dodda Gajanur, a village in Sathyamangalam taluk Erode district near the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, where the film star was attending his housewarming ceremony. Public outcry and violence ensued in Bangalore as well as other parts of Karnataka. A bandh, or strike, also occurred on 22 September in Bangalore. Karnataka's Chief Minister and police personnel sought the help of Tamil Nadu Government and visited Chennai seeking help. Negotiations were conducted and R. Gopal, an editor of the Tamil magazine Nakkeeran, was involved in several rounds of talks with Veerappan. Gopal had earlier visited Veerappan for similar negotiations, and visited the forest several times for videotaped discussions. Veerappan demanded justice for Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery Water dispute, as well as making Tamil the second official language of Karnataka and the release of certain Tamil political prisoners jailed in Tamil Nadu. Rajkumar was held for 108 days and finally released without harm in November 2000. A police official later revealed that 20 crore rupees had been paid by Karnataka government for his release. On 25 August 2002, Veerappan abducted H. Nagappa, a former minister of Karnataka, from his village in Kamagere, Chamarajanagar district. Nagappa had been a minister for Agricultural Marketing from 1996 to 1999. The Joint Special task forces of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu worked with the Kerala police to help release Nagappa. Encounter to release him failed, and Nagappa was found dead three months later in a Karnataka forest. The reward offered by the Karnataka state government was then increased to 15 crore rupees.Ransom demandsFor several years during the 1990s, Veerappan kidnapped police officials and other personalities and demanded ransom money. It is believed that ransoms were often unofficially paid.
In July 1997, he kidnapped nine forest officials in the Burude forests in Chamarajanagar district. In that case, the hostages were released unharmed a few years later even though his ransom demand was not met. It is also believed that Veerappan buried large amounts of money in various parts of the forest; in 2002 police recovered 3.3 million rupees from his gang members. Banned organisations like the Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT) and Tamil Nadu Liberation Army helped Veerappan to secure a Robin Hood image and to draft terms of negotiations when he kidnapped prominent people. Kolathur Mani, president of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, formerly the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) party, was arrested and brought to trial as an accomplice in several of Veerappan's crimes, although later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
He was informed by a forest officer, but he was like "watch me" and sped through.

According to Ramakrishna, the Hakki Pikkis were originally a nomadic tribe that travelled to forests all over the country and hunted birds. Thus, in Karnataka, they were named “Hakki Pikki” as the Kannada word for bird is “Hakki”. “’Pikki’ does not have any meaning and just came to be used along with ‘Hakki’,” said Ramakrishna. “Our brethren in other States are known by different names such as Nari Kuravar (in Tamil Nadu), Vaghari (in Gujarat) and Pardhi (in Maharashtra),” said Ramakrishna. The Hakki Pikkis are an endogamous community and speak a language called Vaagri Booli, which, according to linguistic scholars, is an Indo-Aryan language.

A great complement to your diet, barnyard millet is healthful and nutrient-dense. The Indian barnyard millet, scientifically known as Echinochloa frumentacea, is one of the most widely produced minor millets in the world.
Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Bihar are among the Indian states where it is grown. Kuthiraivali is the Tamil name for barnyard millet. In Hindi, barnyard millet is called jhangora or sanwa. The Malayalam word for barnyard millet is Kavadapullu, while the Kannada name is Oodalu.
In terms of yield and area produced, India is the biggest producer of this millet. It has a high level of resilience to environmental shocks and requires little to no inputs to produce crops.

how is carnatic music different from hindustani music? | Spardha School Of Music
Carnatic and Hindustani music are rooted in Indian classical traditions but differ in their approach. Carnatic music is more structured, with emphasis on fixed compositions and intricate rhythms, while Hindustani music is known for its improvisational style, focusing on ragas and slower-paced performances. These differences highlight regional tastes, with Carnatic music dominating the South and Hindustani music influencing the North how is carnatic music different from hindustani music?
India is the only country that has such a rich culture of music with “two immortal streams of classical music” i.e., Carnatic music also known as the South Indian music, and the Hindustani music, which is known as the North Indian music. A person who is into music, either Carnatic or Hindustani, should be aware of the major differences between these two forms of classical music.
Let's look into some of the major differences between these two classical forms.
1. Origin
The major difference between these two is their origin wherein it showcases the South-North split. Hindustani music originated in North India such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan. Carnatic music originated in South India, mainly from the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
2. Gamakas
Another major and striking difference between these two are the Gamakas. Both Carnatic and Hindustani music uses 12 notes, even though the application of decorations to a swara will be different.
The North Indian style uses the technique called “Meend” - which is a glide between the swaras.

3. Language
The next major difference lies in the languages of the compositions or songs. Carnatic music uses all the South Indian languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Sanskrit. Hindustani deals with Rajasthani, Punjabi, Urdu, Braj Bhasha language compositions. Understanding this difference will help you to choose the style which you are comfortable with. And also it helps you to execute a song with its correct pronunciation, accent and articulation.
4. Compositions
One of the major differences lies in the compositions. As Carnatic music gives a lot of importance to the sahitya or the lyrics, it clears the way towards a raga. It is through the compositions we are learning different ragas. While in Hindustani it's just the opposite. Here we learn the ragas from the earlier stage itself to bring up the creativity and the compositions are just the clear route to that.
5. Voice Culture & Ornamentations
Hindustani singers are used to the throat cavity singing technique to bring up the resonance, whereas Carnatic music is using a bit of nasal cavity for the resonance.
The main ornamentation in Hindustani is the Aakar (‘आ’कार) singing, whereas in Carnatic it is Thathari, Na Ra, etc…
The below given Jugalbandi will help you to understand the vocal usage.https://www.youtube.com/embed/EFPZF_DT7WY?feature=oembed
6. Theme
Both the Carnatic and Hindustani music uses different emotions like love, romance, betrayal, sorrows, requests, happiness and so on in the compositions. In Carnatic it will be more expressed through devotional context whereas in Hindustani it's like a human emotion. These emotions will help you to understand the gist of the composition and the involvement while singing will be high.
7. Raga Classification
Carnatic music follows the 72 Melakartha system, where we will get the reference to different Janaka and Janya ragas (Parent & Child ragas). And there is a wide variety of ragas in Carnatic music with the combination of 16 swaras/notes.
Hindustani music follows the 10 Thaat system (Parent scales with 7 notes) which again leads to the raga classification.
Few examples of the Carnatic ragas and its equivalent Thaats:
THAAT
CARNATIC MELAS/RAGAS
Bilaval
29th Mela, Sankarabharanam
Bhairav
15th Mela, Mayamalavagoula
Kalyan
65th Mela, Mechakalyani
Khamaj
28th Mela, Harikamboji
8. Tala/Rhythm Cycle
This is the next major difference between both of these styles. Some of the common talas used in both the styles are given below.
HINDUSTANI
CARNATIC
Teental (16 beats)
Aditala (8 beats)
Ektaal (12 beats)
Rupakatala (6 beats)
Jhaptaal (10 beats)
Misrachapu (7 beats)
The above given are the very few common talams. These talams are again divided into varieties.
9. Instruments
Some of the melodious and percussion instruments used in Hindustani music are Sitar, Harmonium, Sarod, Tabla, Shehnai, Flute, Pakhawaj, and so on.
In Carnatic music it is Saraswati Veena, Mrudangam, Violin, Ghatam, Khanjira, Morsing, etc… The very popular instrument Tanpura is common in both the styles.

Kanguva, Pushpa 2 to face opposition in Karnataka?-Telugu Funda
The Kannada film industry and the Sandalwood media are apparently upset that some of the big-ticket pan-Indian movies from Sandalwood have not tasted even a decent release in other States, especially the Telugu States and Tamil Nadu.

Actor Suriya was in Bengaluru on Monday to promote Kanguva. On the occasion, a film journalist there asked if, say, a Shivarajkumar movie were to be released in Tamil Nadu, would Suriya ensure that it gets a big release. "Your movie, Kanguva, will be released on 300 screens in Karnataka," the journo said. The tone of the questioning says it all. Kannadigas want their films to find a big release in other States because they are embracing non-Kannada movies on a big scale.
There are murmurs that Pushpa: The Rule will receive at least a minor backlash from a section of the Sandalwood media and the Kannada film industry because the Diwali release, Bagheera, was given a raw deal in the Telugu States.
Kanguva will arrive at the cinemas on November 14th. Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2 will arrive at the cinemas on December 5th.

Idli: Fun Facts About India’s Favorite Steamed Delight! ( part 1 )
Introduction:
Soft, fluffy, and utterly comforting — Idli is the ultimate breakfast choice for millions in India! This humble steamed rice cake, often served with tangy sambar and coconut chutney, holds a special place in South Indian cuisine. While idli may seem like a simple dish, it has a rich history and plenty of interesting tidbits that might surprise you.
In this blog, let’s dive into the lesser-known, fun facts about idli — a dish that’s as much a part of Indian culture as it is of our breakfast tables!
1. Ancient Roots: Idli is Over 1,000 Years Old!
Did you know that the first mention of idli dates back to over a thousand years? It’s believed that references to idli can be found in ancient texts like the “Vaddaradhane” (920 CE) and the Kannada text “Lokopakara” (1025 CE). However, early idlis were quite different — made with only rice and not fermented like the modern version. The idli as we know it today came much later, after the fermentation process was perfected.
2. A Gift from Indonesia?
Some food historians suggest that idli may have been influenced by Indonesian cuisine! In the medieval period, South Indian kings had extensive trade and cultural ties with Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. The fermentation technique used to make idli may have been inspired by a similar dish from Indonesia, called kedli or ketu, a steamed rice cake.
The theory suggests that idli evolved after these influences were absorbed and adapted by Indian chefs.
3. Fermentation Magic: Why Idli is So Fluffy
The secret behind idli’s soft, airy texture lies in the process of fermentation. The batter, made from rice and urad dal (black gram), is left to ferment overnight, allowing natural bacteria and yeast to create a bubbly texture. This fermentation not only gives idli its signature lightness but also makes it healthier by enhancing its nutritional value and digestibility.
The ideal batter can even double in size overnight, making the idlis rise to perfection!
4. World Idli Day: A Celebration of Steamed Goodness
Yes, idli has its own special day! March 30th is celebrated as World Idli Day, a day dedicated to appreciating this iconic South Indian dish. It was first celebrated in 2015 in Tamil Nadu, and since then, idli enthusiasts around the globe have marked the day by preparing and enjoying their favorite version of the dish.
So, if you’re an idli lover, mark your calendar and be sure to celebrate World Idli Day!
5. Idli Goes to Space!
In 2022, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sent idlis to space as part of their food program for astronauts. The space version of idli is freeze-dried and vacuum-packed, ensuring astronauts can enjoy this familiar comfort food even in space. The idea was to provide nutritious, lightweight, and easy-to-prepare meals for long-duration missions.
So, idli has literally gone out of this world! But what do you think comment below

*Junglee Pictures’ Pan-Indian magnum opus, Dosa King, to be TJ Gnanavel’s next after Vettaiyan*
(Serving Masala Dosa and Murder – Dosa King is inspired by the rise and fall of the empire built by restaurant mogul P. Rajagopal and his epic clash with Jeevajothi)
Following the much-anticipated release of Vettaiyan on October 10th, starring megastars Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, and Fahadh Faasil, acclaimed director TJ Gnanavel is back to deliver another cinematic magnum opus with Junglee Pictures' Dosa King. Known for making loved films like Badhaai Do and Raazi, Junglee Pictures has teamed up with Gnanavel to bring this epic story to the big screen. Written by TJ Gnanavel and Hemanth Rao, the Pan-Indian film is inspired by the epic clash of Jeevajothi and P. Rajagopal, setting the stage for a battle of ambition, power, and justice. Junglee Pictures has acquired the exclusive life rights of Jeevajothi Santhakumar for an exclusive and detailed on screen portrayal of the saga.
This high-on-drama and entertainment film is set to be mounted on a grand scale and promises to deliver a cinematic experience. Dosa King is inspired by the shocking crime of the restaurant mogul, famously known as the ‘Dosa King,’ that triggered a landmark conviction after an intense 18-year legal battle—P. Rajagopal v. State of Tamil Nadu. Gnanavel, celebrated for his gripping narratives and unforgettable characters, is set to bring this film, inspired by the thrilling case that was followed worldwide, to life. The fictional drama chronicles events inspired by the rise and fall of the legendary and globally famous empire, Saravana Bhavan, built by, P. Rajagopal, and the fearless Jeevajothi who took on the powerful tycoon. Dosa King is set to captivate audiences everywhere.
Hemanth Rao, known for his much-loved and cult film in Kannada, "Godhi Banna Saadharna Manushya," as well as films like "Kavaludaari" and "Sapta Saagaradaache Ello - Side A/Side B”, that were both written and directed by him. He has also co-written "Andhadhun," which was widely acclaimed in Hindi cinema, and is co-writing "Dosa King" alongside Gnanavel. T.J. Gnanavel, known for his critically acclaimed Tamil film "Jai Bhim," which he both wrote and directed, as well as notable films like "Payanam" and "Kootathil Oruthan," Gnanavel's sharp perspective, rooted in years of experience as a journalist, positions him perfectly to helm this complex and emotionally potent narrative.
Expressing his excitement, TJ Gnanavel shared, “I’ve been following Jeevajothi’s story since my days as a journalist. While the press sensationalized many details, much of the story remains untold. 'Dosa King' is a hard-hitting story that exposes how the system functions, with a focus on the crime and thriller aspects of the narrative. I want to explore the extreme situations of life and tell a deeper story with an untold perspective on the case. This film is my chance to share a story I witnessed firsthand 20 years ago, and I’m thrilled to partner with Junglee Pictures, a studio known for backing important stories that need to be told.”
Amrita Pandey, CEO Junglee Pictures, added, “Dosa King is a thrilling narrative that demands a masterful blend of scale, drama, and entertainment. We’re beyond excited to team up with the meticulous Gnanavel to bring this monumental film to life. Hemanth and Gnanavel, through extensive research, have crafted a script with such powerful twists, turns, and nuances of each character, making it a high-octane commercial and cinematic experience. We’re thrilled to be taking it to top-tier talent soon, and we can’t wait to start filming soon.”
Casting for the lead roles with top talent will begin soon, ensuring that the film will feature performances as compelling as its story. Dosa King is scheduled to begin production soon.
