Louie’s eyes narrowed as he waited for Kang to finish the end of that sentence, but he never did, making Louie all the more suspicious and curious. “I’m sure the search for my new bar manager can wait another day. If they are anything like my previous applicants they will all be hopelessly incompetent anyway.” Louie huffed. In truth, they were fine, but fine wasn’t enough. “Come on. I know how much you like pancakes.” Louie insisted, already leading forwards.

“Yeah. And you’d think I’d be okay with it since I’m not actually dead now, but it was still pretty rough because, well…” Kang confessed even when he could not quite finish the sentence. He watched Louie pull out his phone to shoot a text off before the witch looked back at him again and made that suggestion.

The idea of pancakes sounded great in the moment and the fox spirit grabbed his phone from the ground before turning to look at the other man. “I thought you had somewhere to get to. Weren’t you on the way there now? You really don’t have to…” he started, face warming at the thought of having disrupted Louie’s day. “Like you said, it was just a silly future.”

A lot of people think that Dae Ho’s father was abusive from the conversation he had with Jungbae.

“And yet she had her precious son join the marines?”

“It was my father’s idea. He wanted me to be more of a man.”

This conversation reflects not only on his relationship with his father, but the role he’s felt he’s had to take in society and his life. To become a “man.” To follow those masculine principles.

People characterize Dae Ho as tough, with a strong exterior and soft on the inside. I think sometimes he might act tough, but his character is very expressive. When he’s afraid, when he’s surprised, happy, sad or angry, it’s always written all over his face, body language, and actions. You can usually guess what’s going on in his head.

Even later in that conversation with Jungbae, Dae Ho said he thought his father was great, which isn’t something that would be admitted by someone with an abusive parent. I’m sure his father would be hard on him, much harder on him than his sisters, but I think it would again be from those societal beliefs of making him “tough” and a “man.” Wanting his son to be strong so he wouldn’t be bullied and would make him proud. Especially since he also had military experience. My guess is his father’s actions would be borderline at most.

But we all know that Dae Ho isn’t tough in the ways that society demands, wanting men to be unexpressive and strong, unable to cry or show emotions.

In my opinion, I think most of the trauma that is shown is from his experience in the marines- possibly from bullying and hazing from other marines, etc.

We were together until…” Kang made a face as images of their last mission together flashed through his mind. “We were together until I died. In your arms.” And now that Kang was saying it out loud, he was just realising how sad he had been to leave Louie behind. He averted his eyes from the dark witch, finding that he could not look at Louie and so he had to look down at the ground instead. “Sorry. It’s unfair to dump that on you especially since you didn’t want to know. Like I said, it was pretty intense…”
