Chapter 9 - Kane's Element

Kane growled as the sound grew closer, his tail slowly wrapping around Aliyah's waist. Aliyah felt and looked up at him from behind.

"W-What is it?" She asked quietly, nervous by the tall Naga's shift in nature.

"I don't know. Stay here." He ordered, unwrapping his tail from around her and slowly making his way towards the enterance. Going just outside the cave where he left Aliyah, Kane went towards the rustling, growling lowly before a roughed up Mona tripped over her own feet, coming out of the bushes in front of him and landing on her face in the grass.

Seeing this, he paused, instantly dropping his growl and his guard.

"Mona? What are you doing this far out?" He snapped, clearly thinking she was stupid for having traveled so far from her village. Mona groaned before freezing in place as she sat up. Hearing Kane's low gruff voice, she shot up and blinked at him, causing the tall being to raise a brow in response.

"You..." She suddenly mumbled, seeming rather angry with him. Kane tilted his head slightly, not understanding the sudden mood change. In an instant, Mona lounged at Kane and clung onto his arm, trying to pull him down.

"You lied to me!! You said you could never hurt Aliyah! It was all just some cat and mouse game, wasn't it?!" She yelled, scolding him as Kane paused. Oh yeah. He'd forgotten Mona saw him swallow Aliyah earlier.

Kane thought before pushing Mona down with one swift motion, knocking her back down to the ground.

"I didn't hurt her. I did not lie." He said sternly, sighing and motioning for the blonde girl to follow him as he started to head back to the cave.

"W-What? But I saw yo-"

"Again. I did not harm her. I told you I couldn't and that was the truth. There are things in our anatomy that set you simple humans and us elaborate Nagas apart." He looked back at her as she trailed behind him from a safe distance, cutting her off midsentence. Mona rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.

"Yeah, right.. This is probably just another trick for you to get a free meal!" She snapped, making Kane growl to himself before they went into the cave. He stopped halfway and crossed his arms at Mona.

"That proof enough for you, brat?" He scoffed, motioning over to a peacefully sleeping Aliyah. Mona froze before tearing up, running over to her friend and gently shaking her awake.

Aliyah hummed softly, opening her eyes before blinking twice, wonderibg if her friend really was there. But before she could say anything, she had Mona's arms wrapped tightly around her, crying into her shoulder softly as Aliyah hugged back with a concerned look.

"Mona? What is-

"I-I thought you were dead! For real this time! How did you.. How are you.." Her friend sniffled, pulling away and wiping her nose on her own red sweater sleeve. Aliyah smiled and looked at Kane who still had his arms crossed.

"Kane would never hurt me, Mona. He was just setting up the scenario for the village and protecting me." She explained while gently wiping her friends tears.

"I told you. There are anatomy differences between creatures like me and you guys." Kane spoke up, finally coming over and sitting down next to Aliyah. Mona sniffed before looking up at him.

"L-Like what? How could that be safe?" She asked, not finding a single logical thought that would make a stomach safe for anyone or anything.

"It's a pretty simple concept to explain.. Female Nagas, obviously like snakes, lay their youngs in egg form. Male Nagas, like me, are built with two stomachs. An actual one in our tails for food, and a pouch where we can hold our young either before or after they hatch to keep them warm. It just happens to be placed where your human stomachs are... I simply used the pouch for storage during travel until Aliyah." He explained, running a hand through his hair before looking at Aliyah who nodded and smiled. Mona blinked, glancing at his tail before sighing and looking back at her friend.

"You're sure about this..?" Mona asked quietly, to which Aliyah nodded and smiled again.

"You have to think.. I've had Aliyah with me for almost a week. If I wanted to harm her, I would have." Kane told her sternly once more, trying to get his point across. Mona sighed and nodded, realizing he did have a point even if she didn't fully trust him yet.

"So.. You aren't coming back to the village, I assume? After what happened?" She asked, looking at Aliyah who nodded and rubbed the back of her neck.

"I can't.. That's why we did what we did. So I didn't have to go back and risk Kane being hunted again." She explained as Kane nodded. Mona groaned and facepalmed before running a hand through her hair stressfully.

"Well.. Will you at least still be here if I come back?"

"Should be. Unless someone out for him finds this place again..." Aliyah sighed. Mona nodded a bit before standing up and brushing herself off.

"Well.. I guess I'll head back. Please just be careful..?" She asked, looking at them as both Aliyah and Kane nodded in agreement. Mona nodded before leaving, her red sweater and bright blonde hair fading from view of the cave. Seeing this, Kane sighed and looked down a little. Aliyah saw and tilted her head slightly, a concerned look washing over her freckled face.

"What is it..?" She quietly asked, placing a hand on his tail ever so slightly. It was slight enough to not make him jolt but he did notice it nonetheless.

"Just.. I guess just mad at my younger self. But then again, even if I had different actions back then, I'd still be seen as a monster for 'this'." He snapped, gesturing a hand to his tail and claws. Aliyah frowned and thought before standing up, putting her hands on her hips.

"You know what? Maybe you are a monster. But you don't act like one. And that's good enough for me!" She confidently stated, holding her head up high as she talked. Kane smiled slightly at this and crossed his arms, nodding. Thinking, Aliyah paused, her arms dropping to her sides slowly. Noticing, he perked his head up and grew a confused look on his face.

"What if.. We found another village or maybe even a town. You have a human form, Kane! You could start fresh!" She exclaimed excitedly but the face of disgust Kane gave said it all.

"I'm not human, Aliyah. Plus, that human form is just a disguise. It's like people being in heels, I can't just stay in that form, it's hard to do for even an hour." Aliyah slowly frowned and thought more.

"I guess you have a point.. Maybe we could live around one then? Only go into the village or town if we really have to? Listen... I just want to be far away from my old village. As much as I love Mona, she doesn't need all this and we don't want you to be hunted anymore." Aliyah said, rubbing the back of her neck.

Kane thought about it for a few moments. Would it really be better to run away from all this? Staying and fighting appealed more to his nature but he knew Aliyah would try to stop him the second his mood switched up. Nodding slightly, all he could do was mumble simple and small.

"Fine..."

Paradise dug deeper into the father-son relationship between Cal (James Marsden) and Kane Bradford (Gerald McRaney) in the show’s latest episode, “In the Palaces of Crowned Kings.”

For those who came to enjoy McRaney on Dan Fogelman‘s other series, This Is Us, Kane is quite the departure from his warm and kind Dr. K. “[I’ve played] those sons of b***es before, so this is not a brand new experience for me, really,” McRaney admits to TV Insider. “He’s a complex character to be sure, and no, he is not the nicest guy ever to come down the pike,” he adds of Kane.

As viewers see in the episode, Kane essentially positioned Cal as a tool to gain power, forcing his son to run for office, rather than follow his dream of becoming a high school teacher. A billionaire in his own right, Kane’s sway was revealed in a flashback when Cal tried accessing certain files on his tablet and found they were restricted.

When Cal sneaks into his dad’s study where Kane has fallen into a deep sleep, he uses the man’s hand to scan for access and discovers what Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) had done to the scientists who were sent out to explore the outside world after the catastrophic event that sent them underground.

It proved to Cal that his own father had more control than he did in this situation, and it led to a tense confrontation with Sinatra in the days leading up to Cal’s death. Additionally, viewers got a closer look at the president’s final days with his son Jeremy (Charlie Evans) and girlfriend Robinson (Krys Marshall).

Much of the episode’s story focused on that father-son dynamic that was further strained due to Kane’s battle with dementia. It was Kane’s seemingly confused comments made under his breath that led Cal to examine certain files even closer than he previously had. Eager to share the truth with the inhabitants of Paradise, it seems that Cal was determined to leave clues and hints at the truth that survivors were found in the outside world and citizens deserve to be informed.

Obviously, Cal wasn’t able to spread his clues to trusted individuals before his untimely demise, but Kane did show some remorse for his harsh treatment of his son following Cal’s funeral. Confused due to his mental state, Kane speaks candidly to Jeremy as if he’s Cal, and he admits that he’s not proud of anything he’s done, but he is proud of his son. Sadly, Cal wasn’t there to hear it.

“[He] has his own version of affection for his son,” McRaney notes of Kane’s outlook on his son Cal. “There are people who just don’t know how to express it. I do think he has some genuine affection for his son. The son’s not just a tool to further his own ambition. And I think he is disappointed that his son is not more like him,” he adds, noting that Kane’s ambitions weren’t reflected in Cal. “And that’s what causes him problems.”

Working opposite his TV son, played by Marsden, McRaney adds, “There wasn’t a lot of work that we put into building a relationship there. It’s fascinating. Some actors you just can hit the ground running with and this was one of those cases. It didn’t take a lot of prep [or] rehearsal.”

As for portraying Kane’s struggle with dementia, McRaney notes, “He is one of the people who has the secrets, but also in playing somebody with dementia… there are these incredible moments of absolute clarity. And that’s one of the things I enjoyed exploring about this character is, when do those moments happen and how clear are they?”

We saw some of that clarity rise to the surface in the episode’s final moments after Kane had acknowledged he’d seen Xavier Collins’ (Sterling K. Brown) daughter Presley (Aliyah Mastin) the night Cal was killed. It turns out that she was definitely there in some shape or form because she had Cal’s missing tablet under her mattress.

But that’s a mystery that will have to wait for another episode. As for Kane’s position in Paradise, McRaney says, “There’s more to him than just the money.” We’ll be eagerly awaiting more pieces to Paradise‘s puzzle, as McRaney recalls, “When I finished reading the script, I couldn’t wait to read the next episode. I want to know what’s happening here. And when a script does that to me… I think an audience will identify with it and have the same feeling.” Truer words haven’t been spoken.

It happens without warning, dark clouds rolling in quicker than anyone has ever seen covering all of New Mystic Orleans Falls in complete darkness as lightning cracked with deafening thunder, wind roaring and rain coming down in a torrential down pour. With a single thunderous boom the entire city shakes and the entirety of the two cities is masked in complete and utter darkness; city wide power outage. The winds howl dangerously as people scatter to find refuge in any building available near them. There was something off about the storm the fear that struck blood cold throughout the fairy and dragon communities told those around them that this was definitely not your average storm. Something or someone was royally pissed. But why?

With Arya Bhat and Kaidan Meadows in a stand off in the middle of Triad Industries, shadows swirling around him as his rage wreaked havoc on the merged cities of New Orleans and Mystic Falls the others have yet to realize that one of their own has been taken hostage by their enemies. The wind is blowing at increased forces and the rain slamming down against the concrete of the cities leaving all muses stuck in the buildings they sought refuge in.

Kane's Element - Chapter 1 (Revised)

(3rd person POV)

-

This was the day that everything changed for everyone. It didn't seem like a day out of the ordinary however. That was the odd part… A small town, a village, that sat in the middle of this thick forest terrain seemed to wake up like normal. Everyone was out doing their jobs. Some shopping amongst the tiny market, others at work or staying at home with their families. They didn't know it yet, but all that peace was about to pause for a brief second as something both scary and legendary was brought right to them…

(Aliyah's POV)

I jolted when I was ripped from my deep sleep, feeling a huge weight come crashing up and down on my bed. By this point, I didn't even need to open my eyes. I knew for a fact it was Mona.

"Aliyah!! Wake up!" a female voice called distantly above me as the jumping on my bed continued. I couldn't help but groan and roll over slowly, pulling the covers above my head in doing so. It was so bright… Why couldn't she just wait until I woke up on my own? Mona jumped onto the bed harshly, ripping the covers off of me quickly as she called again.

"Aliyah, get up! They found it, they found the monster!" she excitedly stated as she shook my shoulder with excitement. The monster? I opened my green eyes, blinking a few times as I came to process what I heard the small blonde teen say. I quickly sat up and looked at her. Her blue eyes met with mine and I could tell… Mona wouldn't lie about something like that. It was a taboo in our community to even mention this beast unless it was to warn someone or it was very important.

"Are you sure they found it..?" I asked, watching my friend jump off my bed as I stood up and started getting dressed. I didn't care that she was in the room, in all honesty. Mona has been my friend since as long as I could remember. There weren't many people in this town, everyone knew everyone.

"I saw it, Ali! It's real! We have to hurry, they are putting it in the holding cell below the center fountain." Mona explained as I quickly threw on a baby blue crop top, dark grey shorts, my usual black choker necklace, a dark blue skirt, my dark grey knee high socks, and my shin high boots. I nervously nodded and thought as I put my curly frizzy hair up in a bun with a baby blue bow headband, leaving some of my bangs down and to the side.

I wouldn't admit it, but I was terrified to go to the center fountain… This beast was one of legends in our village. One that looked half human but seemed very far from it. There used to be old tales of these creatures living in this forest. But they were harmless. In fact, they were rather peaceful with our ancestors in the old stories. But when I was taken in as a kid, that's when this beast started to make its presence known to us. But trust me, this was not a good presence… We've lost so many good people to said monster. No one's ever really seen it and lived to tell the tales. But the beast seemed to disappear from the forest completely when I was a young teen…

"C'mon already, Aliyah!!" Mona raised her voice, grabbing my hand which snapped me out of my deep thoughts. I had to almost catch myself from how hard she dragged me out of my room, then out of my house.

This forest, no one but the bravest hunters dared to enter. But I could see where everyone was gathering… The center fountain. Everyone in the town was buzzing, running around a crowd of people as Mona had pushed our way to the front of this crowd.

"Stand back!" A tall hefty man yelled at everyone in front of us. But all I could focus on was the chains I saw first. These silver chains wrapped around the tall hunter and another's wrists firmly. They pulled and fought against their grip. As my eyes followed up the chain from their wrists, however, they led to a metal collar, the other man's chains leading to handcuffs in front of this creature's midsection.

At first, I didn't even fully realize what I was looking at. A tall man, almost 8ft tall, with long black hair and miscolored eyes. He fought against the chains on his wrists every now and again, flinching with visible frusration. But I couldn't stop looking at his eyes. One blue, the other green. At the moment, they were angry, or maybe just annoyed, with those chains. But when those eyes locked with my own, I felt myself freeze and my body tense.

(Kane's POV)

Looking down at a small teenage girl, I tilted my head curiously slightly. What the hell was her deal? Everyone else was yelling or pointing, meanwhile this doll was just standing there and staring. Her big green eyes met with mine and I paused, blinking a few times before I was snapped out of my thought process when the human man holding the collar chain yanked it harshly, trying to get a fight out of me. So it's showmanship they want, huh? I felt myself hissed at him, almost like a cat, my full mouth of sharp teeth being shown to everyone in the crowd. I heard all the gasps and glanced over, seeing the girl from earlier take a step back before her eyes trailed down to my black snake-like tail.

But as I looked at the crowd, I saw a small toddler in the front row, clinging to a woman's long dress next to him who I assume was his mother. My body untensed a little slowly, realising how scared this child was.

"What the hell is it?" the lady yelled in question, her clutching onto her little toddler son. I felt both men holding the chains held them tighter as the tall one stepped forward.

"This is the monster. The beast we tell tales of. They say it is able to swallow people in one bite! This is the being we have lost people in our village to years ago!" He yelled, motioning towards me as I growled lowly in response. Just hearing him talk about my past actions made me nauseous…

(3rd person POV)

Hearing this, Aliyah rubbed one of her arms, letting go of Mona's hand.

"But he's so beautiful..." she quietly mumbled, causing Mona to look at her friend like she was crazy.

"How can you find that beautiful? It's a monster, Ali… It'd probably eat you if you got too close anyways." she shook her head and gestured to the tall being. Aliyah couldn't help but nod in agreement slightly, choosing to listen to her friend. It was probably for the best she did, at least for now.

"He would, wouldn't he? I guess you're right, Mona…" she sighed and looked at the creature one more time before they slowly left the crowd hand in hand once again.

Night soon fell, and with that, everyone left while the creature was put away in the underground cell in the town's center. But of course, Aliyah couldn't stop thinking about it as she sat on her bed with her legs crossed… He didn't seem that dangerous but then again, he was chained. She kept thinking about the way he looked at her with such curiosity. What would cause a monster to be curious of her?

(Aliyah's POV)

I just couldn't take it anymore. I had to go find him and see for herself. What if Mona and the town's people were wrong? I sighed and stood up from my bed, sneaking out of my room, out of my home, and into the town center quietly. I finally reached the holding cell, looking down through the bars of the cell door beneath her and once again, I saw him. The same creature from before. Only difference now, he was curled up in a corner, his long tail wrapped around him. From this distance, I could see that he was still chained by his neck, but this time the chain led to a metal plate on the stone wall.

"Hey... Psst..." I whispered, almost calling him like I would a cat. I had no clue if this creature could talk but I had to try to get his attention. Slowly, I decided to stick my arm through the bars, waving and continuing my calls.

"If you really think calling me like that is going to get you anywhere, I'll tell you right now that it's not… I am not an animal." a low gruff voice echoed from within the cell below me, startling me as it rang out. I froze and paused quietly, blinking as I pulled my arm out.

"You can talk?" I accidentally thought out loud, not realizing how dumb it sounded. The voice scoffed but before I could process that the sound I heard was the chains shifting, I realized the curled up figure was no longer in the corner. I panicked slightly, following the wall chain before suddenly seeing his freckled face pop up right in front of mine. He was right under the bars in front of me, causing me to quickly gasp and back up before looking down at him nervously. I saw him squinting at me slightly from this distance, seeming to be judging me silently.

"You're that girl who was staring at me earlier… Correct?" he asked, tilting his head slightly, dropping his squint. I nodded slightly after thinking before looking down at him closely. From here, I could really tell how tall he actually was. In fact... He almost seemed taller? Was that possible?

(Kane's POV)

"I-I didn't mean to stare. It was just your eyes... I've never seen someone with different colored eyes before." the girl mumbled, looking back down at me through the metal bars. I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scoffed once more. This doll really thought I was dumb, didn't she?

"I know why you were staring. Everyone in that crowd was too. I'm that monster you and this stupid little town fear, right? But then again… No one else was able to look me in the eyes…" I thought out loud, looking over her as I inspected her every move.

"Well, I'm not scared of you." she spoke up. I could tell she was holding her breath slightly after she realised what she just said to me. I raised an eyebrow at her before wrapping my tail suddenly around her arm, pulling it into the barred cell door to be in with me. Her body was dragged down against the cell bars, her face now inches away from my own. She yelped and that's when I noticed her start shaking, looking down at me with a scared expression when I smirked.

"Yeah... Really brave, huh?" I sarcastically stated, my tail letting her go slowly. The teen girl quickly pulled her arm out of the cell and held it close to her. To this, I rolled my eyes again before starting to move away from the door.

"Wait! Um... I-I don't think you deserve to be locked up. You don't seem like that monster everyone tells us about… You haven't tried to eat me yet, so... Doesn't that prove it?" she asked me as I turned back around to look up at her, our eyes locking once more.

"You have no idea what I am." I blankly stated, smirking a little as I went back to the corner like before, curling up in my own coils. She was playing the brave card, I knew that now. But I could tell she was just like everyone else in this village.

I heard her sigh from a distance. I glanced up, watching her look in another direction in thought before walking away. Seeing this, I just simply closed my eyes, thinking she finally got the hint to leave. But hearing a loud click and the cell door creaking open, I opened my eyes and lifted my head, looking up at the now open door. But I couldn't help but tilt my head slightly as I watched the human try to climb down. Was she this stupid to try to get into a barred cell with me?

From this, I could tell she didn't plan this through as she hung there, almost 6ft off the ground from the opening. But when I saw her start to drop down, I felt my heart skip a beat and my tail instinctively caught her and held onto her, wrapping around her. I blinked, not fully knowing why I did that… I felt her shaking slightly against my coils while I smirked a little, slowly letting her go and putting her on her feet. The girl looked up at me, her green eyes widen at the sight of me. From this short distance, I now could see how much smaller she really was. She had to be almost 3ft shorter…

"So what now?" I squinted, snapping out of my thoughts as I lowered my face down to her height.

"Now you're trapped in here with a monster." I smirked more, my tail flickering as my stomach growled loudly. There was no doubt she heard that growl however. But even if my instincts told me to eat her, I felt my mouth water, but she was my ticket out of this cell…

"I-I know! I-I just need to take that collar off..." she stuttered, pointing to the metal collar around my neck. Realizing she was right, I sighed and lowered down for her. Her arms nervously and cautiously wrapped around my neck as she felt around for the switch on the back of the collar.

"I never asked but... Do you have a name? Mine's Aliyah." she asked me quietly, seeming curious. I stayed quiet, however, before feeling the collar click and the metal collar snap off from around my neck. Aliyah. In the back of my mind, I thought of how pretty that name was. But this thought quickly was pushed back as I grabbed her with my tail and pulled us both up and out of the underground cell. But when we were out, I kept a tight hold of her, staring down at her from my height.

"U-Uh... What's wrong?" she asked nervously, obviously trying to show concern. But when I felt her start shaking, my mouth began to water again. I couldn't help it… I looked back down at her and smirked.

"My name's Kane, by the way. But like you really need to know that." I chuckled and licked her cheek. It was sweet… Almost like chocolate. It didn't help my hunger problem. All it did was make it worse in fact… I felt her struggle and whimpering against me.

"B-But I freed you!" Aliyah protested, trying to get free but it was no use. I had a tight grip on her, but not so tight that she couldn't breathe.

"Yes, but it is a long way back to my cave and I'm basically starved." I chuckled again and licked more. But then I felt and watched the small girl go limp in my tails grip. Tilting my head at this, I was honestly confused as I thought. Did she really pass out?

"Tsk.. Pathetic..." I scoffed, rolling my eyes as I slithered into the forest, leaving the area of her small town. But looking at her, she really was helpless, even before this. She's so small compared to me. So fragile… Thinking about that, I sighed and ran a hand through my long hair. Time to get this over with… Shifting my form, I expanded myself big enough that her small form was able to fit in my clawed hand when my tail passed her along. So small…

From this angle, I really saw how fragile she was. I could crush her in an instant if I really wanted to. But for some reason, my instincts told me otherwise. I licked her again rather gently, now covering most of her body in slick liquid. A soft purr came from my chest as I slipped her into my maw. I made sure to have her avoid my teeth before gently gulping her body down.

After I finally felt Aliyah make it to my stomach, I sighed in content and put a hand over her, starting my way home…

Sure! Anon, this is a question that comes up a lot, and I’m not expert, but here’s what I know:

-Martha Kane and Jacob Kane were siblings

-The Kanes are established as Jewish in canon (including Jacob)

-Kate is Jewish, which, according to halachic interpretation, assumes that her mother was Jewish at the bare minimum (but that her father likely was Jewish as well)

-Martha, being Jacob’s sister, would also be Jewish (barring a weird half-brother situation, or that he converted at some point)

-The above exceptions would be unlikely considering the Jewishness of the Kane name, “Jacob”, etc. 

-At the bare minimum again, since Judaism is technically matrilineal (more about this later) and the Kane family line is Jewish, any of Martha’s children would also be Jewish

-Bruce Wayne would halachically be Jewish

Now, all of this hinges on Jacob Kane being Jewish by birth and the Kane family being Jewish overall. But there are also some additional clues:

-Kate’s family was intentionally made Jewish, in a nod to Jewish creator Bob Kane, whose family was also Jewish

-Martha and Jacob’s generation usually married within Judaism by tradition (this has changed a lot in the last few decades) and marriage into another faith was generally frowned upon. 

-The above makes it unlikely Jacob married into a Jewish family unintentionally (i.e., Kate’s mother being Jewish was important to Jacob as a Jewish man)

-Jacob is a commonly-given name to Jewish men

-Martha marrying outside the faith would explain why Bruce was not necessarily raised Jewish (in this retcon, at least)

Hey? Everyone keeps arguing about matrilineal Judaism. What does that even mean?

-This comes up a lot in Jewish Batman discourse. Matrilineal Judaism is a remnant of Biblical times, where Judaism could only be confirmed if the mother was Jewish (assuming the father was not present, etc)

-Certain sections of Judaism hold this strongly, including Conservative, Orthodox, Reform (to an extent) and some other traditions

-For a long time, and still somewhat to this day, it was frowned upon to marry a non-Jewish man (i.e., Jews tended to marry Jews)

-Patrilineal Judaism (Judaism passed down by the father)  is slowly being more accepted, as well as other discrepancies (adoption, Jewish grandparent, etc)

-Some traditions still don’t necessarily view someone as Jewish unless they practice Judaism (had a bar mitzvah, converted, etc) but this is rare, largely because of the “one drop” rule in the Holocaust, and modern aliyah standards of Israel. 

-When folks in the fandom talk about Batman in the context of matrilineal Judaism, they’re usually referring to the fact that, if Martha Kane was Jewish in any way when she had Bruce, he would technically be Jewish by birth in the eyes of many rabbis, regardless of his own practiced religion or atheism. 

-Like I said earlier, all of this hinges on if Jacob Kane was Jewish by birth. I.e., that Martha and Jacob’s mother was Jewish. 

I believe that canon has been established enough where we can assume that Jacob Kane was in fact Jewish by birth, that he married a Jewish woman, and had a Jewish child (Kate). 

I don’t believe this retcon intentionally made Bruce Jewish. Again, some would argue that he’s not really Jewish, as he’s never practiced or recognized the religion in canon. 

However, Judaism is tricky. It’s an ethnic group, a religion, and a cultural tradition, all amassed into one messy blob. It’s likely, if Martha was raised Jewish, that there were still some vestiges of Jewish cultural practices in how she raised Bruce (celebrating some holidays, traditions, or observances) unless she explicitly chose to ignore them. 

All in all, I would say it is very likely that Bruce is technically Jewish. More likely than not. An accident? Yes. But a good one for all of us Jewish fans.

Arrowverse Update 2021:

I am doing one more of those before the new Seasons are rolling in, because we got major news about one project and some more bits about everything else, so… let’s start with the bad news and then continue with the rest:

 Green Arrow and the Canaries

 Is officially dead. It is currently unknown if and how we are going to get a resolution of the cliffhangar from the Backdoor-Pilot and its other open plot-threads. Yes, we were promised that all of this would get resolved somwhere else, if the show would not get picked up, however that was one year ago. Since then a lot has changed.

The main problem is that the project was just buried a couple of days ago, meaning that there is no chance for anything of this to be resolved in this TV-Season, which is already completly planned through for all the Arrowverse-Shows (and even half filmed already in some cases). The other problem is that a good portion of the people responsible for „Green Arrow and the Canaries“ is not a part of the current Arrwoverse anylonger. Yes, Marc Guggenheim could come back just to do a Crossover that resolves all that is still open, but why would The CW want its next Crossover Event to revolve around a never picked up show? There would have to be something else in that Crossover Event, provided one of those could even happen any time soon. As for doing just a singular episode the problem is where. The shows with ties to „Green Arrow and the Canaries“ might not be around any more or be in their final season by the time such an episode could be made, and all of the shows might again get shortened seasons, so the producers are going to have other priorties for their own shows in the next year.

So we might not get a resolution to „Green Arrow and the Canaries“ at all. On Televison that is. There is the alternate route though: A Comic Continuation.

As of now however it’s way to early to know anything for sure though. They are looking into it, but as I said, things are a lot more complicated right now, then they were a year ago.

Batwoman

 Season two is rolling around in a few days, therefor they released a new accurate synopsis and The CW has been and is still putting out a lot of promo material. You can watch most of it on Youtube.

A couple of days after I wrote my last one of these, it was reported that Christina Wolfe will be part of the main cast this season. In other news, we also were told that we will get yet another version of Victor Zsasz. The Arrowverse-Version will be played by Alex Morf.

Also David Ramsey will guest star as John Diggle and also direct an episode (but probably not the same one). And yes, this might be the Crossover Episode. However is has to be said that is has become awfully quite around that illusive „Batwoman“/“Superman&Lois“-Crossover. Given the news about David Ramsey being in all shows, it might have been replaced by a Diggle-Storyline that goes through all the shows including „Batwoman“. We will have to wait and see.

The Season opener will go into Kate Kane’s fate (without her being in it though) and Gotham will have to confront the False Face Society and new drug called Snakebite in the opening episodes. The tone of the new Season might be drastically different from before, there are hints for that, and I am not speaking about BLM instead of LGBT-issues. The words „goofy“ and „fun“ are kind of present, if you know what I mean, however this could just be promotion.

 Everyone is still very tighlipped about the final Season of „Black Lightning“. So I have nothing new, apart from titles (which are in line with the previous seasons and therefore not telling us anything, if we are honest):

The Flash

 So, yes, someone on the Production Team was tested posivite, and they had to shut down the production for a short period of time because of this, but it remained a pretty isolated case (or so it seems) and the production did resume. To make up for the lost time the Christmas Break was shortend, and they are back to filming already, so no need to worry, everthing is on schedule.

This season will see the return of John Diggle to Central City. David Ramsey will also direct an episode (but probably not the same one). We will also see the return of the Meta-Human Task Force, which will clash with Frost. This storyline will also involve Joe. Eric Wallace has hinted before that there will be a storyline involving the police and abuse of power with Joe in it, and I did assume it would be BLM-storyline, however this is „The Flash“, so this storyline might be what he talked about instead, and we might get a Meta-Human are being hunted and abused-Storyline as a substiute.

 As for the first couple of episodes:

Superman & Lois

 The new Morgan Edge is in and it will be Adam Rayner, who will inherit the role from Adrian Pasdar. We also learned that Joselyn Picard will play the other Cushing-Lang-Daughter Sophie. Reporters we will get to meet on the show not only include Ron Troupe but also Chrissy Beppp played by Sofia Hasmik, while Leslie Larr played by Stacey Farber will be a cold former idealist, probably tied to Morgan Edge, and presumable an antagonist.

David Ramsey will guest star as John Diggle somewhen this season and will direct an episode as well. He will make his way through most of the shows (as Diggle) and might be the Crossover-Factor of this season. Even though the „Batwoman“/“Superman & Lois“-Crossover is not officially of the table, we haven’t heard anything about it in a while, so maybe this actually is it.

We got a proper look at the new suit and also the first real trailer, which is … unusal. More artsy then revealing, but is around one and a half months until the season starts, so there will be another trailer coming out soon.

 Aliyah O’Brien will guest star as Kayla a fearsome deadly alien warrior in this season, who won’t be to happy about the Legends, because she is a pro, and they are …. well … the Legends. David Ramsey will also guest star this season, however he won’t be playing John Diggle, but another role instead. Who or what this other role will be remains a mystery. He could play Diggles ancenstor or descendant, if time travel is still an element in Season 6, or a shape shifting alien or an illusion, however they could also go full prosthetics and have him playing a character with no connection to Diggle at all.

David Ramsey will also direct an episode this season. Caity Lotz did already direct an episode, Episode 5, and given that she tweeted about the strain of directing and acting at the same time, we will see more of Sara in this episode than in last year‘s „Mortal Khanbat“. However still expect less Sara in Episode 4 and 5 than usual.

There was an early air-date floating around for „Legends“, which proofed to be a mix-up. Don‘t expect Season 6 (or any mid-season replacement for that matter) before the end of May, and even that would be early.

Supergirl

 Here we are again, with crumbs only. I still can’t tell you anything with value that happens this season. A couple of casting tapes leaked, one involving a prison break plot, however there is no telling if this isn’t just a single scene that leads to something totally different or the beginning of an actual sub-plot. We do know however that Young Alex and Young Kara will make their return this season.

We also know, that „Supergirl“ is about the only show on this list that does not have a finished Episode 1 as of now. They might have one or two finished episodes around Episode 5 or 6, but that’s it.

The reason we know this is that even though they are up to Episode 6 with filming, just like the other Vancouver-based shows, they did start a lot later, meaning they did not film whole episodes. The other reason we know that is that Melissa is just returning to the show this months. And there is no way she won’t be in Episode 1. She might sit out a couple of episodes that star Young Kara and Young Alex instead, but there is no way she won’t be in the first six episodes at all.

We will also get less Alex this year, or tob e more accurate less Chyler. She is having her directorial debute this season. Episode 6 is her episode, and this is the one with Young Alex und Young Kara in it. However present day Brainy und Nia are also in it, so it won’t be a total Flashback Episode. However, expect Chyler Light Episodes 5-6. Episode 7 will be directed by David Harewood. David Ramsey will also direct an episode this season and will guest star as John Diggle, however probably not in the same episode.

Also Odette Annable is back for the final season in some capacity. Wether as Sam or as Reign or both and for how much is unknown at this point.

And yes, „Supergirl“ is also the only show on this, where I can’t give you an episode list, because this is all we know.

Yes, it is the final season and they are extra-tight-lipped because of that, and also as I said they don’t really have finished episodes at this stage, but still it would be nice, if someone up there in Vancouver or someone from the Writer’s Room would give us anything. But it seems like they are holding back with any kind of promotion at least until Melissa starts filming if not longer.

It was another Friday at the bar/club owned by Kate Kane. Kate looked around, smiling slightly as the bar patrons watched Friday Night Smackdown Live on Fox (ugh, as much as she hated it was on Fox, she still enjoyed watching it). Kate glanced over at her ‘VIP’ room which held NXT and Raw superstars also watching Smackdown as it ended. Footsteps approached as Toni Storm walked up, slipping her arm around Kate’s waist.

“Everything alright out here, Katie? Rhea is getting worried,” she teased gently. Kate grinned, “Yeah. I’m good. Everything good in there? After all, Absolution and Team TAAV had that a feud a couple of weeks ago.”

“Yeah, we’re good....though....we may need more drinks. Legado del Fantasma is on tonight for 205 Live,” Toni murmured. Kate nodded and turned to her bartender, Regan. 

“Hey Regan, can I have a shot glass and our strongest alcohol?” She asked. Regan frowned but nodded, pulling out the bottle of Everclear 190 and a shot glass, handing them both over. 

“Thanks,” Kate said, “They aren’t for me. A.....co-worker of Rhea and Toni’s is going to need it.” Regan nodded as Kate and Toni headed into the VIP room. In the room various wrestlers (and even a few non-wrestlers) were hanging out. Over in one corner sat Rhea Ripley, Candice LeRae, and Tegan Nox along with Candice’s husband, Johnny Gargano, and Tegan’s partners: Dakota Kai, Shayna Baszler, and Raquel Gonzalez. 

Toni went to join her fellow Absolution members, nodding at the five sitting across from them. Sitting across from the Absolution stable was the stable of Taynara Conti, Austin Flynn, Aliyah, and Vanessa Borne also known as Team TAAV along with their honorary member, Austin Theory. Though Absolution and Team TAAV had a small feud a few weeks previously, everything was all good now. 

Kate joined both groups, setting down the shot glass and filling it with the alcohol. 

“What, only one shot?” Shayna teased, taking a swig of her beer. Kate rolled her eyes at her friend and pushed the glass towards Austin F, who eyed it warily behind her mask.

“What’s this for?” She asked skeptically.

“Legado del Fantasma has a match tonight on 205 Live....it’s our strongest alcohol, figured you needed it,” Kate said with a  shrug. Austin F stared at the shot glass before picking it up, shooting it down easily.

“Thanks,” she muttered, wincing as the burn of the alcohol slid down and 205 Live began. Legado del Fantasma was in a match against Jake Atlas, Drake Maverick, and Kushida. Austin T grinned at the appearance of his boyfriend, though keeping a worried eye on his sister.

“What happened to your face? That mask is something, that’s for sure,” the accented voice of Harley Quinn said as she bounded up to the group. 

“Hey Harley,” Kate smiled, “I know you’ve already met Absolution so these are Taynara Conti, Austin Flynn, Aliyah Areebi, and Vanessa Borne. They make up Team TAAV on NXT. He’s Austin Theory, usually on Raw but currently back on NXT helping Team TAAV since he and Austin F are close.”

“Cool....but what’s up with the mask?” Harley asked. Austin F gave her an annoyed look.

“I broke my nose trying to hit the man who kidnapped my fiancé with a steel chair, he caught it and threw it back in my face instead. What’s it to ya?” She said. Harley blinked at her for a moment before pulling out a baseball bat, extending it.

“This is much more useful than a chair. Have it, I don’t need it anymore. Got a hammer,” Harley said with a wicked grin. Austin F took it, flipping it around a few times. 

“Thanks, actually. This is going to be good. Played softball back in middle school and high school, played baseball with some of the neighbors. Santos will pay, and I will make him pay.”
