I liked Rickyl (The Walking Dead) I liked Reylo (Star Wars) Oh and I was a Larrie once *cries* me and a few bkdk friends bond over one direction sometimes LOL Can't forget to mention my Sasuke x Naruto past either... I'd say my favourite movie is Memoirs of a Geisha... I just... love everything about the vibe of that movie including that beautiful romantic scene at the end, and I feel like bkdk is sort of being written in the same way where they'll have this intimate moment of connecting to each other which recalibrates everything that's ever happened between them with a romantic lens, if that makes sense? This could also be the reason why Ryuken kinda resents Uryu in a way... since they are meant to be "opposite" to Ichigo and Isshin, while Isshin does not blame Ichigo for Masaki dying for his son, deep inside Ryuken probably does. And it's HELLA painful. Poor family, completely destroyed T-T

I was thinking about Kana, and started wondering, is there a difference between mermaids and sirens?

there is! it's mentioned offhand in the Sirens codex entry in-game, but sirens are actually more like bird-people than fish-people (though not as bird-like as harpies, which are less "bird-person" and more "person-shaped-bird")

Merfolk fall under the "fae" classification, and they have fish-like tails or fins, gills, and scales! some of them live purely aquatic lives, and some are more amphibious, choosing to split their time between water and land. they have minor shapeshifting abilities so they can trade out their tails for legs, but walking can be painful for them, so many choose to use wheelchairs or other mobility aids to help them on land.

Sirens are classified as "celestials", and while they like to live near water, they aren't aquatic beings themselves. Like seagulls, I guess would be a good comparison. They usually appear mostly human, though some have bird-like talons or wings, or in more subtle cases, feathers or what I've been calling "hair currents" and haven't thought of a better name for yet 😅 that's what Kana has! sort of like Eris in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

one of the original inspirations for Kana was actually my pal Pallegina the paladin from Pillars of Eternity, and though I moved away from the feathers-in-hair look for them, that is sometimes a feature that other Sirens have!

So the least voted for option on that poll was some serious Hollow Knight x Demon Slayer AU lore but there were still votes. We are changing the AU name to Void Born, Sun Bound (because it sounds cool and we are finishing up chapter one of a fic for it.) Lore under the read more cause kinda long.

Before the Kingdom of Caelestis was founded, there were many different and scattered tribes. These groups had different cultures, languages, and most importantly religions. They each worshiped their own deities and sometimes their leaders were deities themselves. Not all deities were equal. Some were merely powerful beings who could die, some were more abstract concepts than beings, and some were immortals. Nonetheless, the tribes enjoyed their ways of life and mostly kept separate. Skirmishes happened, as did limited trade, but the tribes remained separate in order to preserve their autonomy.

Then came the arrival of the Pale King, Muzan. He was different from the other deities/leaders. He desired a kingdom, a sprawling empire that would last for generations. He wanted all peoples to bow at his feet and worship one major deity, him. Muzan was a rare being of soul (a certain brand of magic) but all his soul and power came from a being far more ancient than himself. He was the successor, the lesser being. He was not immortal. However, he would never ever admit that he was less than perfect.

Unfortunately, Muzan was very politically savvy and powerful. He managed to consolidate the other groups of people, stealing worshipers and/or subduing other deities to his will. There were a few groups he missed but overall he did a pretty good job creating an empire for himself.

Muzan as a being of soul promised some of his new followers that he could unlock their potential to wield it. Of course they would always be kept at a level that was less powerful than his own mastery of soul. He let Enmu and their apprentices experiment with souls (this was done so that he could use their findings to strengthen himself). Muzan also ordered Nakime the Teacher to gather information and report to him. It was thanks to Nakime and also Yahaba the Watcher that Muzan managed to steal all of Hinokami’s worshipers. Using the research, Muzan sealed Hinokami away in the realm of dreams and then dusted his hands and mostly forgot about her (this was a mistake on his part.) 

Years go by and the Pale King has done pretty well for himself. He has a large swath of worshipers that cheer his name and several loyal servants. There aren’t any outstanding threats to his power. Then he makes his second mistake. Muzan discovers the Void and decides he can use the abyss and the void pools to bolster his power even further. He allows experimentation with the void. Molds are created and bits of void are fashioned into new creatures to serve as guards for the Pale King’s palace, or servants, or warriors in his army. Muzan sees endless possibilities. Under Muzan’s orders, Enmu even attempts to fuse void and soul together (it could theoretically work but it also kills all who try). Attempts to inject void into Muzan’s followers also works to strengthen them (for a time but that too kills them). Still, the Pale King continues to experiment with little care for lives lost or rules broken.

Hinokami, though stuck in the realm of dreams, isn’t powerless. She discovers the void and soul experiments and considers them perversions of nature and its rules. Her followers are mostly eradicated and no matter how hard she tries to get people to listen to her in the dreams she enters, they all fawn over the Pale King and his seemingly endless power and grace. She becomes frustrated and determined to put a stop to things herself. Thus, the corruption begins.

Hinokami’s corruption takes over the wills of the people it infects, turning them into a hive mind that seeks to corrupt more people. Her goal is to bring all people under her control so that she can put a stop to the experiments, kill the Pale King, topple his kingdom, and free herself from the dream realm. Muzan panics because he thought Hinokami was no longer a problem. He orders his citizens to search for a way to stop the corruption. Hinokami wasn’t a super well known deity before she was sealed in the dream realm so the other deities/leaders see the corruption as a new and terrifying threat instead of realizing who is causing this.

Everyone deals with Hinokami’s corruption a bit differently. The group of warriors lead by the Mantis Lords (Akaza, Kyogai, Susamaru), stick to themselves and mostly close themselves off to the outside world except for the Traitor (Kaigaku) and his followers that willingly become corrupted. Enmu and his group increase the soul magic experiments, draining the souls of hundreds (maybe thousands) in order to increase their own soul and resist the infection. However, they only succeed in transforming themselves into horrifying soul creatures that go mad. Anytime the corruption reaches them, Hinokami kills them instead of taking control. Kanae, the leader of the Moss tribe, attempts to call her people back to her to protect them but hardly anyone heeds her call. The Flute tribe led by Managi (aka Gyokko) just parties because it's the end of the world and they don’t care. Lastly, Nakime the Teacher creates a horrifyingly brilliant plan to contain the corruption.

@youraveragenutcasethefirst that's a really cool thought! Decided to respond to this here because it was getting a bit too rambling for a comment reply.

The way I interpreted their feelings on death were the opposite, actually - that they tend to take their long lifespans for granted and don't think much about death. There aren't really large-scale conflicts in the current era, so I imagine it's easy to get comfortable in a city and forget that they're still mortal at the end of the day. But I like your idea a lot too and think it's a very interesting take. I'm sure there are a wide variety of feelings on it across a population, especially given that some of them encounter a drastic difference in lifespan.

Expanding on the Boko which Not-Link killed during the game, pretty much all of them are resurrected from Demise's original army (ie: red & blue Bokoblins/Moblins are; but I think of the green Bokoblins as actual descendants from war survivors who just couldn't make it back to Ikana). The ones that came back Super Extra Wrong are left in the Cistern basement caverns. I vaguely assume that the standard enemies you encounter in the game are stuck in their "fighting in a war" mindset from that ancient era and are a bit more resilient to the thought of death, plus they've already experienced it. This route of soldiers' purgatory is unintentionally darker than intended, but it feels like something Ghirahim wouldn't think too deeply on, as he very seldom thinks about how his actions affect others.

Fun sidenote, I also imagine Ghirahim wastes a lot of time reviving troops after Link tears through an area. I like to think that's actually what he's busy with like 75% of the time, and a lot of the enemies Link fights are the same ones. Ghirahim is very passionate about recycling and delegating dirty work! He's not very good at prioritizing though.

Kana is technically genderless but everyone has referred to them as female because of their main design. Kana themselves does not care how they’re referred to since they shapeshift between forms and genders so often.

I started using she/her because everyone else was using it. In-universe, she would most likely be referred to with they/them or it/its pronouns. Call her what you want, I’ll use she/her from here on though.

As a yokai, Kana was born with a talent for magic. From black magic, white magic, illusions, geomancy, time magic, shapeshifting, teleportation, to summoning, Kana has knowledge of them all.

...And if she doesn’t, she has a penchant for learning very quickly.

Despite her experience, her lack of combat prowess and hesitance on inflicting fatal harm causes her to use her abilities inefficiently in the heat of battle.

Mental Possession

Kana can take residence in any individual’s mind, able to communicate with them directly. She is able to take control of their body as well, should the host choose not to resist her influence (or is unprepared for the sudden hijacking). Kana may also grant access to her abilities to those under her possession.

First Aid Specialist

Healing magic off the table? She can work with what she has.

Kana is educated in the ways of the organic body. She has knowledge of various diseases, poisons, their symptoms, knows the proper procedures for tending to a variety of injuries and conditions, and can improvise solutions should proper tools not be available.

“I’ve seen this before. Take a seat, darling. I’ll have you back to normal by sunrise.” - Kana

Personality

One could describe her as motherly. She speaks with a comforting tone in her voice that she uses to ease the worries of others or to lower their guard for a trick. Despite causing trouble for others to deal with for the fun of it, she will just as quickly undo any of the damage caused when all is said and done.

While she may snark or give playful nicknames, she draws the line at blatantly disrespecting someone or receiving it.

Backstory

Kana lived life as any yokai would; causing trouble for anyone she crossed paths with.

Deep in a vast forest, a stranger had suddenly bumped into her as she was lost in thought. A child. They had explained to the yokai that they were lost and if she knew the direction back to their village.

A grin grew on her face.

She knew exactly where they were. The two stood at the intersection of three paths; the path to the east leading to the village in question.

Kana pointed the child to the west path instead. With a smile and a thanks, the child went on their merry way.

Such a simple deception but enjoyable nonetheless. Kana tailed behind the child while staying out of sight hoping to see their reaction to being mislead. An hour of walking later, the child was met with the sight of a massive canyon. The yokai observed closely, waiting for the child’s realization.

But it didn’t come. The child kept walking forward as if unfazed.

Kana was confused. They were looking for their village, yes? This particular canyon is a known landmark; it should be clear that they were lead the wrong direction.

As they neared the edge of the cliffside, Kana assumed they were possibly interested in the view. That way of thinking quickly vanished when the child stepped off.

The yokai couldn’t recall any other instance where she moved so fast. The child was surprised to be suddenly cradled by the nice stranger who had helped them before, floating in mid-air no less.

The stranger was trembling quite a bit though.

Having returned them to their village, Kana had found out from the elders that the child was, for the most part, blind. They had wandered away from the village in an attempt to prove their independence.

The incident had scarred Kana down to her very core. She would never want her antics to cause the death of an innocent. After weeks of deep thought, she decided to rid herself of her yokai heritage, blaming it for her enjoyment in causing trouble.

The sigils had been prepared, the ritual had been set. Kana placed herself in the center and activated the spell. Her world went white and a jolt of pain channeled through her body. She felt her body go limp.

When she had awakened, she was face to face with a rather rotund wolf by the name of Geist. He informed her that she had met her end and that her soul had ended up at the gates of Nomura.

She was...conflicted at her circumstances. On one hand, she unintentionally committed suicide, on the other, it hadn’t felt like she died considering how alive she was feeling at that moment. Slightly amused at the events that had transpired, she came to the conclusion that magic alone wouldn’t be the answer to her inner conflict. With a second chance at life(?) and among a new cast of faces, she uses this fresh start to truly find herself.

Look I'm sorry but given everything that has happened, this is the kind of thing Review Anon should know about.

So why in Utsuro's name do you want her to be left in the dark about it?

...I understand some of you probably think this is a stupid idea, after all Review Anon is the main person in charge here, so by all accounts she should know what has almost happened in her home.

But I am completely sincere and honest when I say that telling her about the Void Juice is the worst thing we could do right now.

How could telling Review Anon about the Void Juice be the worst thing we could do?

Besides what if she finds out on her own? She will get mad with us hiding this from her.

Then is your job to ensure she doesn't, keep information as tight as possible.

You haven't answered the question, why are we not allowed to talk to Review Anon about this?

As some of you know...before everything regarding Utsuro occurred. I was studying psychology and was planning to become a therapist when I graduated from Hope's Peak Academy.

Obviously I wasn't able to finish my training but thanks to the resources here, and help from both Gekkogahara and someone who I cannot disclose right now, I now have enough skills to give therapy to people.

To cut a long story short, I'm Review Anon's therapist and have been helping her with some of her issues. With both my psychology and therapist skills I've been learning plus my expertise with spirits, I was uniquely qualified for the role.

What kind of issues does Review Anon have? Aside from her being afraid of water but I mean... she drowned. Anyone would be scared of the things that killed them.

I get nervous with open wires since I got electrocuted for example.

For confidentiality reasons I'm not at liberty to disclose what kind of issues Review Anon has, but she has a very good reason to see me.

And when I heard about the Void Juice and its properties I got hit with a sense of deju vu but couldn't put my finger on it...until I remembered one session where Review Anon got really scared.

And the things that scared her....their similarites to a monster spawned from Void Juice was uncanny...almost as if they are one and the same?

Woah woah woah woah! That's BIG! Y-you are suggesting Review Anon has SEEN these creatures before?

I'm afraid so and this could also tie into where the Void Juice has come from...

Does...anyone know where Review Anon comes from?

Of course not she has ghost amnesia. That's why she looks the way she does, because she has zero sense of identity.

But...this means that Void Juice must have come from Review Anon's home dimension.

So...why not tell her? If anything this is even more reasons to tell her since she might know more about this stuff then we do.

Trust me...the panic attack Review Anon had with this creature...its the worst one I ever seen from her. And that's from a bad memory...if she learns the same kinds of creatures were roaming here....

I fear she might do something really drastic that puts ALL of us in danger.
