Second question is easier to answer - LOL no. I get far too attached to my little guys, and I'm a complete sucker for happy endings. I have to have a very, very good reason in-lore for a character to die before the completion of their arc.

Back to the first question - yes! Yavari and Kamaka have some deep-seated fears that will take a very long time for both of them to open up about.

Yavari had a troubled childhood. Her mother was an alcoholic that did the bare minimum to keep Yavari alive. Most of her childhood was spent rummaging through dumps and stealing from stalls to survive and actually have things to her name. Joining the pirate crew was the first time Yavari felt like she had purpose. Because of all that, Yavari has a very deep-set fear of abandonment. She feels like she must always be useful in some way, to be actively benefitting the crew at all times, or else she will be tossed aside like trash as soon as her usefulness runs out. She is afraid of showing her true self to others in case it's not good enough, and it takes a very long time for her to learn how to trust other people. Funnily enough, Yavari doesn't have a lot of physical fears. The sea doesn't scare her, she's seen combat and bloodshed, and has experienced pain and suffering - not much bothers her anymore.

Kamaka was born to rich, strict, overbearing parents of a noble family line, groomed since birth to be the next heir to the household and become the matriarch of the family after their mother. Too bad his parents ended up with a son some years later. After Kamaka made his escape from his rigid upbringing, he's much happier, but the effects of that kind of childhood linger. He fears responsibility; he's convinced himself that he will never be able to reach expectations, and has thus stopped trying. He's too afraid of failure to ever want to put in effort into anything; all they ever heard as a child was everything they did wrong, never what they did right. Learning that failure isn't something to fear, but embrace, requires them to shake off years of low self-confidence and perfectionism. Physically, Kamaka isn't squeamish and considers themself tough, but is still very bothered by blood and gore. They grew up on an island, but still hate the sight of vast, open sea; they have a bit of agoraphobia, both for wide-open spaces and the anxiety of large crowds and public areas they aren't prepared for.

Kai Kamaka III vs Henry Corrales | Bellator 300

I do appreciate that PFL is in spirit what Bellator was under Bjorn Rebney. Known veterans of the game getting a second chance at fighting on TV and getting a big cash payout but having to fight a bunch of Russian prospects to do it. The veteran in this case is UFC and Bellator veteran Kai Kamaka. Always a fun fight with Kai, and seeing him fight himself into the semi-finals of a $1 million tournament has been cool.

Kamaka will find himself facing off with the 2022 PFL featherweight champion Brendan Loughnane (29-4) in the main event of PFL 9: 2024 Playoffs this Friday (August 23).

🎯🥊 for Yavari and Kamaka?

Ok. What do they do best and what they love/hate to do.

Yavari is a tinker. At her very core, she's a nerd for gears, wiring, switches and levers - anything that makes up contraptions and tools and components. She's an artificer, an inventor, and an engineer of sorts. She loves to build and recreate and rip apart. A particular love of hers are clocks - she's fascinated by the intricate and precise time-keeping mechanisms. In a different life she would have loved to be a clockmaker.

Besides her main hobby, Yavari loves to read. Most of her books are technical manuals and engineer's references, but she has a collection of a variety of non-fiction and stories. She has a soft spot for drama and romance.

Yavari loathes doing nothing - you have to force her to take a break. Reading is the only down-time she allows herself, since it's intellectually stimulating. Otherwise, she is always doing something. She can't stand having nothing to do. She's prone to feeling useless without a task. If you don't give her something, she'll find something, and you do not want that. She likes to make completely unnecessary "upgrades" to various things around the ship, or stealing crewmate's pocket watches to take them apart.

Kamaka, on the other hand, loves to relax. They'd sleep all day if left alone. He's a bit of a lazy ass, who loves to nap and laze around and generally be a bum. His favorite activity, however, is making art; all sorts of art. They've made their own clothes, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, all kinds of stuff. They love to explore their creativity, and loves being outdoors where they can look around and find new materials and ideas to create the next thing.

He's also a dancer, using their body to express themselves; and he can move. He's learned various traditional dances from his home, and is always eager to learn something new from his travels. They try to encourage Yavari to join in, but she would rather watch Kamaka twirl and shake than join in. Kamaka doesn't mind having an audience.

Kamaka hates formality; they can't stand fake smiles, forced hellos, and the uptight rigidity of high society. Give Kamaka a rule to follow, and they'll break it; give them an authority to follow, and they'll rebel. Kamaka hates doing anything that isn't authentic and truthful to themself. However, it also true that he hates being told to do anything at all.

Kai Kamaka takes UD over Pedro Carvalho.

For a promotion that tries to put some umph on these "regular season" fights by incentivizing finishes, sure are a lot of decisions on these PFL cards when the fights aren't straight up mismatches.

Still, a fine featherweight scrap between two scrappy fighters. Carvalho seems to thrive on the idea the other fighter not engaging when he starts firing kicks and Kamaka is not the type of fighter to shy away. Hee stayed right in boxing range, countering a number of Carvalho's empty kicks with straight punches. Did some good work. Sucks that he's 2-0 on the season with a win over Bubba Jenkins, a former finalists, and he's still not guaranteed a spot in the next round because he couldn't nab a finish. Not like he's a boring fighter at all.

I think Jenkins has to go to the 2nd round in his fight with Gabriel Alves Braga for Kamaka to advance.
