Fate and Fortune
Tumblr media
Part 9 is a bit shorter but I mean hey- two pieces in one day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Part 8 is kinda essential context
Content warnings are a bit more serious: panic attacks (implied) serious aggression, violence, what could probably be considered torture and death,
Moots: @fyre23 @risottoneroo and @rat-makes-stuff (lol hi, how are you enjoying the story?)
“Vera!” Kakyoin’s voice suddenly seemed to call her back from her panic. Her gaze shot up to meet his, all her blood running cold.
She recalled something about the bastard shooting at her and Kakyoin moving in to hide her from his sights but her memory seemed to gloss over why she couldn’t move... oh yeah
“There’s three of us and two of them- we have to be able to take them on somehow.”
“Perhaps if we knew how their stands worked but we’re flying blind.”
She leapt up and inched closer back to where she originally stood. “Not completely. Geil’s stand’s range is only as far as its next reflective surface. I can use Fortune to get him into a choice shard and Polnareff only needs to slice.”
“And the cowboy?”
“Fortune can catch the bullet- you string him up.”
Kakyoin’s hand came to rest on her shoulder. “You’re depending on yourself a bit much don’t you think?”
Vera’s anger flared dangerously so with a slow turn of her head she gazed at the redhead over her shoulder. “I’m not the same little girl that walked in on my dead parents. I’ll kill these fuckers if its the last thing I do. You were closest to Avdol, weren’t you? He’s dead, isn’t he Noriaki?”
He didnt answer, only looking back at her with the same pained expression she felt belomged on her face. She turned around, gripping his shoulders. “I can’t do this alone, we need to pull ourselves together and take them out- you understand?”
He gave a firm nod and from there, Vera’s mind ran a mile a minute. Her first stop was ripping off every mirror she could fit in her pocket. Fortune trailed behind her, giving the shiny little items a bit of luck. “It’s like launching your own targets for practice. Let’s hope Polnareff gets it.”
After a moment of panicky rescue, Polnareff and Vera switched places as the target of their attention. “Got a name, cowboy?”
“Now dollface- no need to get too involved with these folks, I don’t think my conscious could handle taking a shot at a face as pretty as yours.”
“Yeah?” Vera smiled as she phased the cigarette between the bastard’s lips into her hand and brought it up for a drag. The realization hit him, and his reaction was to reach for said cigarette where it should have been. “Well since I won’t even get a name from you... Hey Geil- care to share what kind of plans Dio has, scratch that, had for me?”
Unsurprisingly the fool took the bait because no sooner than the question was asked, an invisible hand clasped around her throat. She tossed the first coin up into the air, her movement sudden enough for him to leap up after the coin.
“JEAN NOW!”
Silver chariot zoomed through the air and the sound of silver slicing through flesh was enough of a qeue to ran after the other idiot.
He fired a shot in vain, Fortune’s hand swatting at it just in time to be caught between their middle and pointer finger.
Fortune graciously returned the bullet between his brows- not hard enough to kill but just hard enough pierce a bit of flesh. He flew back and landed with a crackly thud in the dirt.
Fortune tossed another mirror shard up in the air- for Jean to slice through. Meanwhile Vera and Kakyoin were holding Geil’s accomplice down.
“Hey, rodeo clown- where’s your accomplice hiding?” She shoved his face into the dirt- letting Hierophant tie him down tighter.
“Like hell I’m telling you.”
Another mirror shard in the air. She grabbed hold of his hair under the stupid hat and brought him to the nearest puddle. Fortune came closer, shuddering lightly as she started changing the blonde’s fortune.
“My power is for more than just stealing cigarettes. You see, that scaly feel in your throat- that’s what it would feel like if I don’t get my way and bring that cobra in the basket closer to your throat.” Her fingers dug into his mouth and forced his jaw open. “Look! He went in tail first after all.”
She waited for him to see the glowing cobra eyes hiding just behind his uvula in the reflection of the puddle before she pulled Fortune’s power back and waited for his cough to stop.
“Five hundreds yards East from here, there’s a small town. He’s hiding there.”
Her gaze moved to Kakyoin. “You and Polnareff go, I’ll hold the fort down here.” She stepped up to him, giving him the lucky trinkets in hand. “Use these if he decides to go after you.”
“And what about you?”
“I can make more, now go.”
It came as no surprise to see the Hanged Man bouncing between going after the men and taking her on. Vera watched as he hovered in the glass window near the edge of town. She brought Fortune closer to try and take the stand but when it spoke she pulled back for a moment.
“My mother predicted your fever and your connection to the Wheel of Fortune. My mother had told Lord Dio, there was only two ways to deal with you- sway you or kill you. I understand now why, you make your chosen probability happen by means of closing every other option. Even now, I was compelled- stuck to only one option. You outrank me.”
She watched in the reflection of the window as Fortune’s fingers gripped the stand in its hands and squeezed, the phantom scratches of its fighting against Fortune’s arms causing an unpleasant itch on her own arms. “You’re death is not my reward.”
Fortune dropped the stand and soon it shot out of sight- probably after its own body.
Vera lit another cigarette as she walked over to the leftover idiot. In a last ditch attempt he brought his pistol out and pointed it at her. “Close range is not the best way to take me on, darling.” He warned hysterically.
A grin spread over her lips, kneeling down to let him press the barrel of the gun against her forehead. “Try it.”
The click followed and turns out- it was an empty chamber. She tilted her head in question. “Nice try, though.”
With her own hand she grabbed hold of his shirt and punched his lights out with the other.
Fortune dragged the unconscious bastard behind her as she returned to where Avdol’s body was. The idea made her nauseous to see his dead body but she needed the closure.
It was once again denied to her as all that was left was the bloody puddle he was slain at. Her legs carried her to the nearest witness and was about to explode on them but the hand on her shoulder had her hand whipping her head to look behind her. It was Jotaro.
All the madness that took her over up until that point left her body completely and she leapt up into his arms- sobbing uncontrollably at the open ache in her chest.
For a moment she was that sobbing child running towards Avdol’s house after she lost her parents, the mere thought of that now, the fact that even he was gone opened up wounds that weren’t ready to be shown to the world.
She cried until her body couldn’t hold out anymore, her breath finally calm enough to let her separate from Jotaro. When she looked around her she groaned at the sight of Geil’s accomplice gone with the wind and the others berating the girl she could only assume was the reason why.
“Are you good to go?”
She peered up at him, eyes tired from all the crying.
“Yeah, I guess we can go.” She started walking off towards the others but Jotaro’s hand wrapped around her wrist and he pulled her back just a bit. Vera expected something grand or something from his heart, she looked at him expectantly but instead she got a line far better.
“He’s not dead.”
