anyways here's why people are strange by the doors applies to Kakashi. i feel like during the time right before/right after he leaves anbu kakashi is left feeling like an outsider looking in. he feels like he's got a reputation for being sort of a weirdo & feels super isolated about it. Plus i think this speaks to a few other habits he picks up.

during this time i think he spends a lot of time in low-key bars, gripping his drink for dear life & watching the people around him interact. he always sort of drifts on the outside of whatever is going on socially & wonders what people think of him. it's not something he'd really worried about for a long time because he assumed he would die before it mattered? plus i think he would assume during this time that his perception of himself was how other people saw him too. he hates himself for killing rin of course, he hates himself for cutting himself off from his friends, he's stuck in a loop of self-desprication that makes him paranoid as to how others view him.

a part of him wants to step out of his bubble on his own but ordering a drink drains his social battery hard enough let alone partaking in whatever is going on. He'll hang out until someone offers to buy his next drink or he goes home. He'll occasionally ask someone for a light if he can't find his, though he wouldn't be caught dead without a lighter BCS then he would have to ask someone for a light.

i think this habit also drives him to find connection in sex vs. connection. someone buys him a drink, he gets to feeling a little more alright about interracting with them, he ends up following them home & being gone before sunrise. he prefers to be a face in the crowd, a forgotten name in spirit whether or not he will be. ( he is kakashi of the sharingan, after all it's not like he's just going to be forggotten every time ) but regardless of that he still feels like the connection is immediately forgotten??? whether or not op forgets. which isn't very cash money of him but he was so wrapped up in his whole world & his perception of it that he really doesn't care whether or not he's hurting other peoples' feelings in the process.

he feels he's deeply misunderstood in this as well, though he's not. he focuses a little too much on his own loneliness during this time to acknowledge others' loneliness to the same degree. i think the time between him leaving anbu & him becoming a teacher is full of a lot of self-destructive thoughts & behavior.

i like to think that he has some sort of (brief) relationship with someone he may have met in anbu during this time but he second-guesses himself at every turn, denying his natural inclination towards romance & instead kind of hurting the person he's with. i think a lot of what happens is a lapse of communication, an imposed distance between he & his love interest. he doesn't make the effort to strengthen the bond, instead expecting it to just happen. he's just not healthy enough to deal with his own thoughts & emotions, let alone anyone else's.

Gai is really the best influence in his life at this time though because his enthusiasn for life is infectious, whether or not kakashi will admit it. Gai broadening his perspective is actually what drives him to reassess how he treats people. Gai helps Kakashi understand that the whole village is just as wounded as Kakashi is individually, thus making it a little easier to adjust his perspective of things. His kindness inspires kakashi to be kinder himself, whether or not he knows how to do that at first.

but yeah people are strange has me thinking about kakashi getting stuck in his own head & maybe not always treating people because of that. though his perception is actively changing throughout the events of naruto, it's not until the timeskip that kakashi takes the actual initiative to be better.

Being back in the village was not the easy transition that people thought it would be. Can someone write me an AU where Sakura, realizing Sasuke is about to go rogue and that he's not listening to her as she begs him to stay, is the one to pull a fast one and knock Sasuke out, then promptly drags his unconscious ass to Kakashi?

I just want a story where Sasuke winds up on probation and is furious because now not only have his plans been trashed, but he also isn't allowed on missions until it's been proven that he can be trusted again.

And Sakura, realizing that this isn't helping either, talks Lady Tsunade into allowing Sasuke on team missions again (starting low and working his way back up) if Sasuke will go to therapy and start working through his problems. Only Sasuke, being the emotionally constipated little prick that he is, goes, but sits silently, refusing to talk. So Sakura drags Naruto and Kakashi along, and asks for a team therapy appointment. Kakashi and Naruto are less than thrilled, and for a few moments, nothing but small talk happens because they're all really uncomfortable. So Sakura realizes she's going to have to talk first, and starts airing her insecurities about being the weak link.

Naruto is flat out stunned to hear that Sakura is actually hiding a lot of sadness and self-doubt. Kakashi feels guilty as hell, because he's paid so much attention to the boys on his team and their issues that he's accidentally stunted Sakura's growth as a shinobi by neglecting her. And Sasuke? Sasuke feels like someone has punched him in the gut when Sakura quietly admits that she feels that Sasuke thinks of her as an annoyance at best and expendable at worst. Because Sasuke knows he can be an asshole, but fuck, he did not mean to make Sakura feel like a burden that he'd rather toss.

So Kakashi, loathe to talk about it, but realizing that he needs to get the other two to talk if they're ever going to heal, apologizes to Sakura. Admits that after that day on the hospital roof, he woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night and promptly lost the contents of his stomach. Admits that in that moment, he thought that Sakura was going to die just like Rin, and that he's probably been subconsciously trying to shelter Sakura rather than push her to get stronger because of what happened to his first team. Because she came to him soft and cheerful and innocent, and he didn't want to watch the world chew her up and spit her out like it always does to shinobi.

Naruto is the next to open up. Starts talking about growing up alone, feeling the hatred and fear in the eyes of the villagers when they looked at him. About how much he cares about his friends, how terrified he is of losing them, and how badly he wants to prove himself.

Finally, Sasuke, despite his immense discomfort, starts talking about the massacre, about how he feels that killing Itachi is his burden to bare, and how he feels like Naruto and Sakura will never be able to understand that.

So Sakura explains that her turning him in wasn't because she selfishly wanted to keep him there, or because she thinks that he should let Itachi walk free. If he needs to leave the village to train, then she'll deal with that. But not with someone like Orochimaru. Not someone who wants to use Sasuke and doesn't care what happens to him emotionally. She admits that she's terrified that even if Sasuke succeeds in his goal, and comes out alive, the emotional trauma of it all will leave him dead inside, and that he'll feel that he no longer has a purpose with Itachi dead. That the need for revenge will consume him, and leave nothing behind when there's no one left to hate.

That, finally, makes Sasuke think. And he starts actually talking in his therapy sessions.

Naruto decides to leave to train with Jiraya, and Sakura becomes apprenticed to Tsunade.

At first Sasuke is frustrated and angry, because they're setting themselves up to get stronger, but they stopped him from doing so? Until Kakashi tells him he's an idiot, and does he realize that with those two finding their own teachers, Kakashi is free to train Sasuke exclusively, like he did for the Chunin exams? And has he considered that maybe they just want to get stronger with him so that he doesn't have to bare his burden alone?

To which Sasuke mumbles an awkward little, "Oh."

Basically, I just want a story where Sakura manages to stop Sasuke from becoming a missing-nin, and Team 7 manages to sort their shit much earlier than in canon. I want Sasuke to finally realize that his team really care about him, and that caring about them back isn't a weakness. I want him to see that Sakura was always valuable as a teammate, because she's brilliant and intuitive and she held them together, even when she wasn't strong enough to contribute to the fighting physically. And I want him to come back from his own training journey with Kakashi and have his breath stolen from his chest the first time he sees her in a fight, beautiful in her fury and so much stronger than he ever could have imagined.

Guys, I've just got a lot of feelings about how traumatized these poor children were, and how it's affected them as adults. I just want to see a version where things are still hard, but they learn to lean on each other when they're young and share their burdens so that they don't grow up to be emotionally stunted adults who can't admit when they're in over their heads and need each other.
