No my scars are not a sign of imperfection. The one on my knee is from that time in grade 4 when I was having so much fun that I accidentally slipped and went tumbling down the playground stairs. My friends all accompanied me to the nurse.

The one on my breast bone is what connects me to my mother, because she has the exact same scar that she got because of the poxs around age 15. I got it at the same age.

The one on my forehead is from that one time my partner in sparring accidentally punched me too hard and fouled. I sat with her till late and I like to think I helped pull her out of her misery, even just a little bit.

I have just one tiny scar on my hands, and I still remember how I got it, when my sister and I were babies and playing tag and I fell from the bed and hurt myself. All I remember after that is the blood, and how she vowed never to hurt me again.

The one on my navel is a sign of my first ever surgery, at 14, showing my bravery, my strength and just how goddamn much I wanted to live inspite of everything.

The one on the right side of my stomach is from the same surgery, that reminds me I missed an International Debate competition because my school wanted me to get well. They had to keep my asleep all day to stop me from crying.

The one on the left of my lower abdomen is again from the same surgery. It reminds me of my bravery, and courage to go back to school in just two weeks because I had important exams I needed notes for. It reminds me of my foolishness because I fell sick immediately after.

Do not even for a minute tell me my scars are not beautiful. They have made my life beautiful, and that is all that matters. If you cannot bear to look at them, if you flinch at the mere sign of them,

I shall know.
