Asuka Langley Soryu: My Reason to Stay in Motion

I’ve been thinking about Evangelion episode 22 ever since I first watched it back in my sophomore year of college. Barely a day’s gone by when my thoughts haven’t turned to it, if only for a brief second. They say that fiction has the power to influence your reality, but it wasn’t until this episode that I really understood what it meant.

What happens to Asuka… it haunts me. It destroys me. It sticks with me in a million different ways that I can never shake off. There is no other fictional property, no other character, no other moment that has sunk its claws into my psyche quite like this one has. This is my third time through, and I still had to literally bite down on my own closed fist to keep from screaming. Almost to the point of breaking skin.

There’s a lot I want to say. About this show. About this episode, About Asuka herself. But I’ve already said so fucking much of it during my first re-watch of Evangelion. So while I pull myself together, give myself a couple minutes to cool down and start thinking about some of the new takeaways I noticed this time through, here’s a rewrite of my initial episode 22 analysis from a year or so ago. It’s been edited to account for changes in my writing style and opinions, and I’ve added a longer section to include how Asuka’s journey continues to affect me in End of Evangelion (so spoilers). This is an update of what is still probably one of the most important things I’ve ever written for this blog, a deeply personal essay on why Asuka Langley Soryu is my single favorite fictional character of all time, even all these years later. I hope it resonates with you even half as deeply as it did for me writing it.

its a weird feeling when you want to make more friends but you know yourself well enough to understand that you won't be able to manage being a part of a friend group with more than three people. i will admit that im jealous of people who are good at maintaining friendships, especially online. unfortunately, for me, it's "out of sight, out of mind" situation, unless we're super close.
