★ Exclusive! Anees Bazmee opens up about No Entry Mein Entry! Here's when he's planning to roll the project!

Sep 12, 2022 The Salman Khan-Anil Kapoor-Fardeen Khan comic caper, No Entry, was immensely successful in 2005. In the last few years, there has been a buzz about the film’s sequel, No Entry Mein Entry, being in the discussion. Finally, things are falling into place for the project, and if all goes well, the movie might roll in January next year. Confirming the same, film’s writer and director Anees Bazmee says, “Finally, it is all coming together. We might just roll in January. The film will continue from where No Entry ended and we will have Salman, Anil and Fardeen taking the narrative ahead.”

Ask Anees why the project has taken so long, and he reasons, “We don’t just want to cash in on the popularity of the franchise by making something mediocre, but want this film to live up to its previous part. When we first spoke about making a sequel as a team, we bounced off several ideas, which we discussed and eventually rejected. Finally, in 2016, we came up with a one-line idea, which we all agreed upon. Developing a script around this one-line idea and then writing the dialogues took a lot of time. People say that one should leave their brains behind while watching such films, but to make such a film jahan log apna dimaag apne ghar chhod kar theatre mein aaye aur enjoy kare, we have to work our mind a lot (laughs!).” The other aspect that’s taking up a lot of time at the scripting stage is the storyline that boasts of 10 heroines playing prominent parts. Explains Bazmee, who’s working on the script with his team of writers, “If you tell a writer to weave a script keeping 10 heroines in mind, he is definitely going to be dazed.” While the original male star cast is retained, Bazmee says that he hopes that heroines from the earlier part, which included actors like Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta Bhupathi, Esha Deol Takhtani and Celina Jaitly, are also a part of the sequel too, but it all depends on future discussions with the team.

Talking about how Salman, Anil and Fardeen reacted to the script, he shares, “Salman has loved the script. Fardeen, too, is quite excited. Anil ji ko maine ab tak kahani nahi sunaiyi hai.We have done so many films together, so he counts on me. Once the final touches are done, I will narrate it to him.”

While he is working on a couple of scripts, Bazmee feels that No Entry Mein Entry will be his next project after the success of his last Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The director is quick to add, “ Aise waqt mein iss film ne woh umeed jagayi hai ki if the audience likes your film, then nothing can stop its success. The happiest moment was when Priyanji (Priyadarshan, director of Bhool Bhulaiyaa) called me and praised the film. He is a friend and a very big director, and I was touched by his gesture,” says Bazmee. So, is Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 on his mind? “I would love to make it. I enjoyed the horror-comedy genre. Buss ek achchi script mil jaye toh kyun nahi?”

In a recent interview, Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma talked about the old times in Bollywood and discussed how the exhibitors would remove scenes and songs from the films before the digital times. Although it changed the narrative of the entire movie, it worked, says Ram Gopal Varma. “Most people don’t realize that a film is a series of shots and scenes. In every scene, what the audience will think is very difficult to predict! A critic watches the film seriously. I don’t think the average moviegoer watches the film with the same eye.”

Narrating an incident, Varma said, When Om Shanti Om (2007) and Saawariya (2007) were released on the same day, I went with my physical trainer to watch both the films. First, we saw Saawariya. This guy was constantly on his phone. He went out multiple times for a smoke or to get coffee. After 45 minutes, he asked me, ‘Iss picture mein daylight nahi hota hai kya?’! This is the only observation he made about the film, and he hated the film. Then we went to see Om Shanti Om. He exhibited exactly the same behaviour. But this time, he loved the film! Hence, in a 2 ½ hour-long film, for nearly 1 ½ hour, he was not concentrating on the film and would watch the film once in a while. At that time, he didn’t like Saawariya but he liked Om Shanti Om.”

Continuing further, Varma said, “This is more relevant today. A lot of people feel that OTT is a threat. I personally feel that YouTube is a threat. It comprises so many kinds of videos, from well-packaged news to funny comedy sketches to viral videos of scandalous stuff done by politicians. Hence, the attention span is going down. Also, the mind-set is such that you can go anytime off YouTube and resume whenever you feel like it. But with OTT and theatres, the mindset is that you have to invest 2-3 hours of your time. That kind of attention is going to keep decreasing in the future.” “A few weeks back, I was in Bengaluru and met an acquaintance. I asked him about his movie viewing habits – how many times he goes to the theatres in a month and how many films he watches on OTT on average. To which he said that he and his wife have stopped going to the cinemas. As far as OTT is concerned, he told me that every once in a while, he and his better half make a plan to watch a film on a digital platform. They end up watching only the trailers for 30-40 minutes, unable to decide what to watch, and they go to sleep! But this is so true.

The way the recommendations pop up, it’s so difficult to decide what to watch. Eventually, you’ll decide upon the recommendation from a friend,” he added.

He says that the viewers attention is no more a capturing thing. People enjoy watching more than one thing at a time and this is changing the way entertainment works, which is why Box Office earnings are hit so bad.
