ALIX JACQUES:
THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC
By Ernst Albert
"After attentively watching Alix Jacques in an interview with Dr. Eddy Altine on Kajou TV, I gave a high five in the air to say well done Dr. Lulux. You are more than a musician. You are an intelligent gentleman and a man of high ethical standards. The public needs to be informed of your integrity and the qualities that led you to be who you are today.
I was taken back to the number of years that I have known Alix before the music. As I listened to him talk, I also realized that his character has long been formed since our years together at Georges Marc School in Port-au-Prince. Alix has always been assertive and direct with a great sense of humor that his real friends understand. Those close to him, I am certain, have been exposed to his rigid principles and tenacity in his efforts to accomplish his artistic dreams. The people who know him from afar or simply by his public persona may have a different version of this great artist. They only see the performer based on a public perception. In any case, what you see is always deeper than what you think it is. Allow me to enlighten you.
The humility with which Dr. Lulux expressed himself during this inspiring interview revealed a high maturity level from the man talking about his musical journey. With a flow of wisdom and passion the artist answered all the questions that Dr. Altine so eloquently asked him. There was no hesitation in his replies. When asked about the way he sees the new Compas generation, Alix honored the new musicians for the distances they have covered beyond the regular routes from Martinique to France. “These new musicians are all over the world as ambassadors of the Haitian music,” he stated. The distinction between old Compas compositions and the new ones was also described with fineness. There was no intention projected to diminish any of the new generation’s approach to our music. Instead, the maestro encouraged a formal musical education to the musicians who may need a basic knowledge and comprehension of what they are doing. That, my friends, is how a man of honor responds to a question that could have a negative connotation in the ears of many!
So much could be said about this educational exchange between the brilliant Dr. Altine and our featured artist Alix Jacques (Dr Lulux). The focus has been on the gracious way the man behind the music presented himself and the information he shared with the spectators. It is also important, however, to remind you that Alix Jacques has a long musical career as a guitarist and mostly as a bassist, a composer/ arranger. He has created a new approach with his innovative band Cole Cole after a number of successful years with the DJet-X. His fresh musical inspirations motivated him to put together an Afro-Latin jazz band as well as the musical group Compas Messengers with some high caliber musicians. It is time to elevate this serious musician to the patter stole he deserves. The man is creating and innovating our Compas while preserving its roots. It is time to open our doors and our ears to publicly applaud this legendary icon for his significant contribution to the Haitian music industry. He is one of the best making a difference with his music that we can shake hands with. Let’s do it!
Alix, with all due respect I salute you for a job well done. You were also very poised and positive during your interview with Dr. Altine. This, my friend, is what we need to unite our artistic forces. We can critique without any put downs. Oh, I forget. It takes some humility to do so! "
