The argument for this is that as figs are commercially grown, the insects for them are provided by the fig farmers (to make more figs for people to eat) instead of them naturally ending up in the situation where they would end up as fig food. So saying the process exploits or at least tricks insects is logically sound, even if few vegans I know of find this to be an issue worth much note compared to all the other things going on regarding the exploitation of animals.

But... that seems like a big stretch.  Though it is possible to “trick” a fig into ripening without pollination using plant hormones, the wasps aren’t being “tricked” into doing anything they wouldn’t already be doing in nature.  The fig wasp is dependent on the fig for their reproduction.  If a female fig wasp lays her eggs inside a male fig, she also promptly dies.  Not because she can’t escape, but because that is their life cycle.  

It can’t survive long outside of the fig anyway.  Once the larvae hatch and mature inside the fig, the males and females mate, and the males burrow holes so the female wasps can escape.  The males quickly die thereafter, while the fertilized females carry pollen from one fig to the next one where they will lay their eggs.  And die.  All the wasps are going to croak regardless.  It just happens that sometimes a fig wasp wanders into a female fig (the one people like to eat), where she can’t lay eggs and gets stuck.  Either way, the fig, gets pollinated and the wasp dies.  Plenty of baby fig wasps are born into the world through the male figs.  It’s a mutual relationship, not exploitive.  The wasp can’t do its normal thing without the fig it depends on, so...?  

And I do understand this argument probably comes from a small number of vegans and is not a representation of most vegans.  I agree that there are much more egregious examples of animal exploitation going on that need more energy and attention put to them.

Yeah I get why it seems pretty out there, and to me it seems vegans usually end up with the same conclusion as you have here - that since fig wasps are going to do their fig thing regardless, adding humans into the process isn't such a great perversion of nature.

It's not a big sacrifice to give up figs though when you're already [vegan], so those people who are in the least bothered by this quite easily give them up too - likely without much additional pathos involved. Some people also just like to be puritans. - Also big respect on bothering to go look this up btw!

Thanks.  The funny thing is I see a lot of non-vegans just simply grossed out by the idea of a dead wasp inside their fruit, so they won’t touch them either.  I grew up with the Fig Newton urban legend, so I was wary when I was a kid.  For a cookie, I think the taste and texture are pretty nasty anyway.  Not hard to pass on that one XD

I have been vegetarian for almost three years and always hoping to some day go vegan. When I heard of this challenge I was like now is my time to test if I can do it!

I have slipped a couple of times but I think that's fine, it happened when I started vegetarianism too. Hard things now have been going out spontaneously and avoiding things in the cupboards at home. Luckily my mum has been supportive and started buying all vegan alternatives!
