Everyone always says Doctor Who needs to be constrained to a shoe -string budget to be good again, but no one ever articulates *why*.
It's because show runners, without access to ~beautiful amazing stunning CGI~ to prop up their episodes would instead have to rely on actually telling meaningful, coherent stories , not just having CGI scenery.
Good writing and characters can make a cardboard set held up with duck tape meaningful and heartrending because the writing brings meaning to the setting.... But the most beautiful, breathtaking CGI in the world can't save a boring and unintesting story or it's flat characters.
You could have the most breathtaking special effects, but if your story is shallow people are going to be snoozing during the climax or so bored they "watch" the whole thing twice over but still can't remember the plot.
It's not a bad thing that Doctor Who has a higher budget than it started out with, but it DOES allow writers to hang onto the coattails of CGI effects and looking pretty instead of being able to hold meaning and significance by the weight of the writing and performance.

The K9 episode "The Fall of the House of Gryffyn" is just. filled with flashing lights.
The opening for the show itself is also very flashy. I'd recommend skipping it.

Fantastic that this came across my dash as we're watching K9 (2009), a show almost no one has heard of and those that HAVE heard of it have most likely never watched it and consider it "cursed" from looking at promopics of K9s redesign and nothing else -- completely missing out on a very fun and well written, creative show set just slightly to the left of Doctor Who Canon, that's allowed to world build instead of keeping the present day always locked in step with the real modern world instead of having continuity from the constant, global alien invasions
And we're only on episode 6 so far :)
You’ve heard of doctor who canon get ready for doctor who apocrypha

Do new Whovians know about Chameleon Circuit?
Not the chameleon circuit, the ever broken TARDIS mechanism.
Chameleon Circuit, the fan band from, like, 2009-2011?
Because their music honestly still holds up. I'd forgotten about them until the 2023 specials threw me right back into my DW hyperfixation head first. But damnit if they're not at least as good as I remembered. Some of the songs are even better than I remembered!
Now, unfortunately, they only made the two albums in 2009 and 2011. Therefore, most of their songs refer specifically to events and characters from series 4 and 5, the ones that don't are more about the general lore.
So I wouldn't recommend checking them out unless you've seen series 4 and 5.
But they're on YouTube and Spotify, if you're interested in some utter bops.
May I recommend:
Gallifreyan History 101, The Sound of Drums, Mr. Pond, K9's Lament, and The Doctor is Dying/Still Got Legs (yes they're two different songs but I like listening to them together)
To start you out
You're welcome.

The Saga of K9
1977: Bob Baker and Dave Martin create K9 for the Doctor Who story The Invisible Enemy. He was only supposed to be in that serial, but production made him a companion as he would be popular with kids.
After four seasons as a companion, K9 became an icon of classic Doctor Who. Due to a quirk of character rights at the time, Bob Baker and Dave Martin owned K9 as a character. This spawned decades of attempts to make a spin-off featuring K9...
1979: The Adventures of K9 and Other Mechanical Creatures:
1980: The Adventures of K9 books are published. K9 fights the Time Lord "Omegon" in one:
1981: A pilot episode is made for K9 and Company. The BBC does not pick it up for a full season:
youtube
1982: The K9 Annual 1983 is published:
1997-98: DWM 253 announces a four-part pilot for a K9 series is being developed. DWM 269 reveals concept art made by Rory McLeish:
2006: K9 returns to Doctor Who in School Reunion:
2007: K9 is relegated to small cameos in The Sarah Jane Adventures as Bob Baker is still developing his own K9 spin-off:
2007: Dave Martin passes away.
2009-10: A K9 spin-off series is finally made in Australia, independently from the BBC. K9 had to be redesigned because the BBC owns his original design. The series has mixed reviews at best and lasts one season:
2015: The Essential Book of K9 is published. It features another redesign of K9 in the comic Short Circuit.
2015: A film titled K9: TimeQuake is announced and slated for a theatrical release in 2017. It will feature K9 fighting the Time Lord Omega.
2017 comes and goes with no news.
2018: A multi-million dollar K9 TV series is being developed to lead into K9: TimeQuake:
2020: The anthology book K9: Megabytes is released and promoted as a prequel to TimeQuake.
2021: Bob Baker passes away. His obituary mentions he has written scripts for a K9 film and TV series:
2023: Concept art for K9: Omega Rises is shown at the conversion Invasion Blackpool. The concept art shows K9, a new male character, Omega, Matter Beasts, and Dinodragons. The status of this project is unknown.

December Advent Calendar
December 14 - Gävlebocken
For the second day of the advent calendar, I will introduce you to my most favourite christmas tradition ever; Gävlebocken.
Gävlebocken is the Swedish Christmas goat. Turns out the Swedes have the tradition to erect a statue of a goat made of straw in Gävle, at the beginning of the Christmas period. That’s the official tradition. However, since its start in 1966, a second unofficial tradition has started; to try and destroy the christmas goat. As of this year, 38 out of the 56 goats have already been destroyed.
Because of this, the group of people that were originally responsible for building the goat stopped for a few years. During this time, the local natural science club decided to build their own miniature version of the goat. However, this one also got destroyed most of the time.
That’s why the goat is under constant surveillance every year since 2017. It has double fences, cameras, 24-hour CCTV and guards along with a K9-unit. There is a sentence of 3 months in prison for destroying the goat. This, however, doesn’t stop people from trying to destroy it. These are the most bizarre attempts at vandalizing it;
1973: Someone stole the goat and put it in his backyard
1976: A car drove into one of the legs and the goat collapsed
2001: An American tourist was imprisoned for two weeks for setting the goat on fire, claiming “his Swedish friend had said it was okay”
2005: a group dressed as santa and gingerbread men fired flaming arrows into the goat
2009: hackers disabled the cameras and set the goat on fire
Also, in 2010 a guard has claimed to have turned down a bribe to let 2 men use a helicopter to fly away the goat.
You can can see the live footage of the goat here

For Screen readers, this is a poll.
The question is, does this link allow you to watch the video?
Option one is "yes" (please list country in tags)
Option two is "no" (please list country in tags)
the link in question is
^please click the above link, and if applicable push 'play' and see if the video loads, or see if it says "not available in your country".
I was trying to find where to buy/stream the Doctor Who unofficial australian spinoff, K9 (2009, and completely unrelated to the K9 and Company spinoff of the 70's/80's that only had a pilot episode) , since Pluto TV only has the first episode now, and after ordering the DVD, I discovered that the show creators are intelligent since the DVD and have the entire series, all 26 episodes, available to stream completely for free on their website!
If you have not watched K9 (2009) yet, or if its been years since you've seen it, this is your sign to watch it !
the poll is because someone said the link said it was unavailable in their country, so now I'm curious who gets to also watch K9 for free :)
Don't forget to reblog to share the Doctor Who love :)
