Abstract shadows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went into the church gallery in use of the lighting . I had previously asked a few of my peers for some of their rubbish, so I ended up with an empty monster can .
The lights in the gallery came from every angle as you can see , it projected a shadow in each direction . This relates to the copious amounts of rubbish discarded .
I decided to colour the shadows with conté, which created an abstract pattern..

After finishing the jewellery I went to the photography studio with @k00278086real and @k00279452 to experiment with the projector and to photograph my teeth jewellery. There was little equipment there for the day that was in it so I just used the camera on my phone! I’m delighted with how they turned out although the quality of my camera could be better! I used my acetate print from my Cyanotype workshop and the teeth I’ve been using as primary research within this project temporary.
This ended up being a more contemporary take of Victorian tooth jewellery. I ended up focusing more on producing portraits than taking images of the jewellery which has me thinking about portraiture.
Portraiture played a big role during the Victorian period, particularly Cyanotype! I want to look further into this which my teeth jewellery in mind!

Cyanotype
I liked this process so I wanted to re work the image of the plastic bag in the water. I took my prints from yesterday and added them in . I used articles on microplastics and plastics in fish to add a formal layer .
Tumblr media
I made a word document with my fish print , printed it and stuck it onto black sugar paper. I photocopied it to be negative then photocopied it on acetate.
I redid the bag picture as I wanted it to be darker, so I did the same process but using a heavily contrasted b&w photo.
Tumblr media
I liked the look of text on prints and wanted to give it an editorial look , some more formal , so I took text from the national geographic article on micro plastics and science direct on microplastics in brown trout. I made a document then copied it on acetate.
Tumblr media
I then layers them into a composition I liked. And put into cyanotype machine using the page I prepared yesterday .
Tumblr media
It turned out not bad , looked washed out but it adds to the atmosphere. The bag is the main focus and the creepy fish are an embellishment to emphasise the destruction of SUP pollution.

Stop Motion of Sculpture
I had intended to animate the plastic fish , hence the sections. I wanted to literally and metaphorically display the movement of plastic .The shadow adds an eerie ness .
I messed up on the last part , I made a gap in the movement so it looks jumpy. The table shows in the corner which i would rather it didn't ,as its a distraction .

Ceramic crab ( part of ceramics ‘bottle’ )
Tumblr media
I wired up the crab , bringing it together , I decided not to to glaze the crab , as I found it unimportant, it by itself doesn’t directly relate to my theme. I just wanted to see it done. The crab is a pair with the ceramic bottle , as it is its new home , showing the effected envirnoment beneath the see.

Glazing ceramics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to glaze my ceramics I made earlier on , I had initially intended to ‘paint’ with plastic but decided against it as it would take up too much time an i wanted to experiment with other mediums and ideas .
I used a turquoise glaze , I thought the colour was quit nice , reminded me of the sea ,and of course blue plastic bottles .i filled the inside then emptied it , let dry then dipped the outside. I enjoyed this process.

Casting form of plastics in the body
(Work in progress)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The image of plastics in breast milk has been soldered to my mind unwillingly .So I decided I wanted to create that visual of plastic in the body.
I began with the idea of a resin figure that contains plastic that I collect from the sea, but I soon came to learn that resin would contradict my concept as it’s terrible for the environment and health. So after talking to a tutor, Mary , I decided I want to experiment with different mediums to hold the shape of the figure and the plastic materials inside , such as ice or gelatine.
Today I started off with the object I want to mold, it’s nothing fancy , but conveys the idea of discomfort and the visual of the chest is an ode to the article.

Plastic fish sculpture
(Work in progress)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I connected the pieces with rivets , so its moveable .I drilled holes before putting in the rivets .
I melted the plastic of the tail , which shrank the plastic and made it slightly curved which looks very interesting. I think the textures the heat manipulation produces resemble the sea , calm slicks of water.
I looked at molding the plastic to the 3D fish head . This was working however I ran out of big enough pieces of plastic to meld to the form as they all shrank.

Printmaking workshop
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This evening I did the print making work shop , where we etched onto acetate and then moved onto a relief print with a wood block.
My idea behind this piece was of plastic pollution in aquatic environment and how it harms it, like the sculpture I am working on I took the form of fish bones . I decided to make the head a bottle top to show the versitude.
Tumblr media
I liked the naturist form of the bones in the first one , but with the wood block it turned out to be difficult to create curves , so It came out ridged.

(work in progress)
After looking at Stephanie Kilgast , i decided to decorate the clay bottle rather than plastic. When i found the yellow buoy when beach combing , goose barnacle's were living inside , which prompted the muscles idea. I reversed the idea of the ocean being overwhelmed with plastic , as now the plastic is being overwhelmed by the bio life of the ocean .i had originally planned to embellish the bottle with plastic, how ever i decide on clay for the muscle forms as i could control the shape better. I want this piece to look like its been in the ocean for a long while .

Spontaneous recording
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I went on a walk along the water and came across floating bags on two separate occasions, this made me think of the seminar on creative recording, so I did just that and recorded these images spontaneously .
This relates to my project as we see first hand the discarded domestic plastic . It’s interesting how it reacts with the water and the sea life . There were mullet breaking the surface , however showed no interest in the item itself. They must be used of this.
The reflection on the water gives it an other worldliness. The plainness of the white plastic juxtaposes the beauty of the reflection, saying I don’t belong here.
My recording of the floating bag conveys the fleeting usage of the bag .
I could use this in graphic design, like a poster , to raise awareness towards SUP plastics and it’s impact.

Silicone mold
(Work in progress)
This is half the mold , the other half will be done on Tuesday. I used clay to create a box shape , pressing the object into it . The negative space is filled with silicone , then removed and filled with the agar mix . (I topped it off with more silicone - to cover the arms)

Organs using plastics
I used bostik to glue the plastics I gathered from ocean waste and SUP’s from the bin in our apartment, into a shape . The form is not perfect , but i want it to just resemble the organs .

Molds - success and failures
Tumblr media
Unexpectedly agar Agar set the best , it could’ve been because it’s a mix of agar agar flakes , vege-gel and carrageen seaweed. I love how it turned out . It very firm in texture , so thé orbe form isn’t fragile .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gelatine didn’t set well , it has a transluceny which I am looking for but unfortunately it didn’t keep the shape of the mold .
The jelly came out well , taste good too , not sure about the colour yet , could be used to represent the blood in the body ? Maybe like jelly would work better , give it a toxic cartoon look for hyperbole for the plastic pollution theme .i like the giggle effect of the strawberry jelly, the seaweed jelly didn’t have that quality.
Tumblr media
I made this video to show how the gel material is just a disposable product , easily destroyed. Like how plastics are slowly destroying the environment .
I plan to create ‘organs’ from SUP’s I’ve collected , and suspend them inside the jelly using my clay figure as the mold .

Casting with gelatine n’ such
(Work in progress)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ater learning the resin would counteract my theme , I began experimenting with other materials - gelatin, vegan gelatin(contains carrageen) , agar agar , carrageen seaweed , water (ice) and strawberry jelly .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to use these materials as its dissolvable, with time the jelly created will disappear. I used the vacuum molds for the gelatin products and the pink mold and a plastic bottle for the seaweed based ones. I thought of these as my dad used to make carrageen pudding and thought about how strange that seaweed could make jelly.
This type of gelling material is ideal for my product as it relates to plastics in the ocean -interacts with plastic pollution .I will check back on the molds tomorrow , i hope the seaweed works , as the concept is cool, it resembles a sea water sample.
