Hawaii on the table
Hawaii off the table
I based the tattoos on kākau which is traditional tattoo art in Polynesian culture. I got what I know from "The Hawaiian Tattoo" by PF Kwiatkowski and Kahelua Krug, a kakau uhi. I used a lot of polynesian styles from Hawaiian to Maori considering that I learn that now many get a mix or hybrid of all the different styles blended together.
She has a moari tattoo on her chin, Moko kauae
A Samoan and Tahitian style tattoos on her arms
On her chest and right leg are traditional hawaiian tattoos, fun fact traditional Hawaiian kakau begins on the leg first the right for women and left for men.
The seal is a Hawaiian monk seal which is the state animal in a japanese tattoo style because that's the most popular style in Hawaii
I also used traditional hawaiian textile, Kapa, for the top and skirt

@ronmanmob {{xx}}
Where someone else might not think so, Beth finds something inherently sensual about discussing personal and physical boundaries outside of the bedroom. What soft and hard lines exist, how much trust and willingness is given to one's partner, what wants and dislikes one might have while under the covers not of the bed but civility. Tea steeping away while coffee is sipped and savoured mid-afternoon, and quietly posed questions careful in their structure. Conversation had against ears that are just breath and warm cheeks and a sense of insular intimacy while in the centre of a crowded restaurant. Over the course of seven years, as they grew closer inch by inch, emotion by emotion, Beth and Ron have discussed the things they are comfortable with, what turns him on, what she imagines lovemaking to be like, the curious differences between men and women ~something he has experience with and she admittedly doesn't~ and by the time they naturally arrive at being together li'dat, there is very little they don't understand about one another's sexuality. And with that comes a road-map so they know where and when they can go exploring. She'd waited until Ron's stars aligned and approached it great care, so as not to spook the part of him that might take her desire poorly. A few slight words in place of silk scarves, whispered in a confidence she is rarely robed in. He'd not stomach anything more binding. Beth would certainly be willing to trust him with that, hampering her ability to move with anything between his warm, broad hands to special silk rope but she doesn't make the same correlations as he might. They agree that hug-jackets are horrific for all they're meant to safely restrain. She needs the illusion of freedom, and so she doesn't fault him for his own lack of consent. But she knows, too, that as long as she asks so sweetly, and he agrees to it, there's nothing in the world more binding. At least until she stokes his fire to the point it becomes a conflagration. She's delightfully surprised when his body rises and flows not unlike the rushing adoration of the sea so quickly when she touches him. Speaks to his emotional state far better than any words between them, and her answer comes as her fingertips flutter around his calves. She pulls herself up slightly so that she can fully see his mouth, mouth curved in a sultry grin and eyes molten like the fire in the belly of the world. Her palms slide upward toward his knees and she leans into him, basking against his most sensitive skin with all the softness of hers. Allows him to feel the steady drumming of her heart as the song of her pulse increases in tempo. How her breath is just as erratic as his own. "All mine." She echoes and nods, the approval of his offering indicating that he said it perfectly, and what's more? She believes him. She hears him, and maybe more...that if he asks her to stop, to take a moment, to not do something or repeat it again and again, that she will hear him then, too. She turns toward her left and once more affixes her mouth on his skin. This time her tongue wielded like a fine paint-brush traces the lines of his lowest ink. Follows their patterns, then doubles back on itself and forges new connections amongst the pigments. The blood rushing through his femoral artery warms her lips. She has different ways to communicate, though, and seeks to tease him even if she can't afford him words. She grazes his most delicate skin with the idea of her nail tips. Not a scratch, not a pinch but an outlining. A mimic of her tongue on his kākau ever so slowly. Tenderly. A promise that in due time she will taste the whole of him.

So because I am In Too Deep (by Sum 41) here’s all the hidden details below the cut starting with the Title
1) Studio Orange is known for animating many shows including Land of the Lustrous, hence their title “the Illustrious Studio Orange”
2) Nightow makes an appearance on a Wanted poster as “Nightow the Comix Artist” in a few episodes, notably when Meryl and Roberto read a brochure about Vash.
3) The title itself has 3 Easter eggs:
The i in Trigun is shaped like a bullet
The u is for Undertaker and is shaped like a headstone
There are 5 “moons” in the title including the brackets, separated by the title (kind of like a hole)
4) Of course we know Vash is the Humanoid Typhoon, but did you know the other cast members have their own titles, too?
Here are the ones Funimation made for them back when the 1998 anime aired:
… and here they are again at the bottom right of this poster:
5) Speaking of captions, it’s not necessarily just the Ballad of Vash the Stampede but the Ballad of Humanity (yknow like the Song of Humanity)!
6) Does that ring behind Vash look familiar?
It’s not a scope/ target frame; it’s a radar — something that’s been used to detect tropical storms like hurricanes and typhoons.
7) Vash and his Thomas are actually headed the opposite direction of a typhoon. Normally typhoons blow from west to east and stay in the Western hemisphere, but here he’s moving from east headed west. That’s because Hawaii is in the Eastern hemisphere and therefore receives hurricanes (which do move from east to west) instead of typhoons. Otherwise they are considered the same phenomenon!
8) Now on to the Hawaiian stuff!
Vash obviously got a different birthday suit on and since Trigun is a “space western” I thought it’d be fun if he got decked out like a Hawaiian cowboy or paniolo! Look up a Paniolo Parade and I promise you won’t be disappointed!
9) Speaking of his outfit, he’s lost the red coat and is now wearing a red feather cape trimmed with black rooster feathers, or an ʻahuʻula - a special type of feathered cape usually reserved for males of nobility in Hawaii. Realistically I don’t think he’d wear one but I made one for this piece anyways as a nod to that! He’s a very special guy after all!
10) The red geraniums on his wrist and hat aren’t new, but the marigolds and jasmines are! Both marigolds and jasmine can be found growing in the desert, and jasmine specifically have some importance in Hawaii as the wedding flower ;)
11) Of course our Thomas can’t go out not wearing any pretty things either!! This bird got decked out in all sorts of desert flora (sans the geraniums and a special purple flower near the end) ! From left to right it’s marigolds, mimosa (acacia), red bougainvillea, and succulents! There’s also a layer of palm leaves on the top and bottom of the lei.
(I’m not one for flower language so interpret these however you want!)
12) And last but not least (and probably my favorite part of this whole thing) the red drape on the Thomas! Yes it’s similar to a poncho but the pattern does hold significance:
The design was based on Hawaiian tattoos or kākau (and yes different Polynesian cultures have their own unique tattoo styles) Although the designs and the interpretations are extremely loose, here was what I came up with:
Triple triangle in the corner >> Lōkahi = harmony/unity
Top layer of trapezoids >> Humans/people = community/humanity on No Man’s Land
Middle layer of lines >> centipede = determination against hardships/war (either protection or brothers in arms in certain cultures) / the OG worms or WAMs in No Man’s Land
Bottom layer of blank triangles >> half kalo or taro leaves = new generations/family/origins/ the plants in No Man’s Land
Vash’s goal has always been about bringing love and peace to everyone so this drape is supposed to represent that goal!
And that’s all the intended hidden features in this poster! I hope y’all like it as much as I had fun making it! Mahalos!
HOLY SHIT GUESS WHO FLEW IN TO HAWAI'I FOR HIS BIRTHDAY!! YEAH, THAT GUY!!
#trigun stampede#vash the stampede#trigun#tristamp#trigun fanart#idk what else to tag this so#paniolo Vash#fake western poster#watch how many details I can slap into this bad boy!!!#Hawaiian cowboys deserve some praise#stop giving me beach episodes for your summer gachas#drawing#fanart

Me chanting to myself: blood quantum is fake. Blood quantum is fake. Blood quantum is fake. I am Kanaka Maoli.
Me, looking at kākau and realizing if I got one, even if it had very significant spiritual meaning to me, I would just look like a white person with a tribal tattoo to most people and even other Kānaka who might recognize the symbols might think I’m appropriating them: … 🧑🏻😬

Ma ka ʻŌlelo Haole
This is an introduction to the traditional Hawaiian calendar, Mahina (the moon) and her moon phases, and their names. While there is only one moon, there are around 30 different names. Each name describes a place in the moonʻs evolution. From Hilo to Muku, the moon names give insight into what she (the moon) is doing.
Here is what I learned, as well as some of my other notes:
The moon phases are organized into months, and a malama is a cycle from new moon to new moon. Traditionally, the names of the months differ from island to island, as well as which part of an island you live on. The three periods of the month are often described as growing, round, and waning (hoʻonuʻi, poepoe, hōʻemi). These three stages of the moon cycle are called anahulu. While an anahulu is often thought of as ten nights, kumu Kalei says that definition is more related to the sun. As for the moonʻs anahulu, there are smaller groups of 2-4 moons. Here are the different names of the moon:
Anahulu Hoʻonui: Mahina is growing
Muku, Hilo, Hoaka (new beginnings)
Kū moons (working, building, growing)
Kūkahi, Kūlua, Kūkolu, Kūpau
ʻOle moons (Rest, reflection, planning)
ʻOlekūkahi,ʻOlekūlua, ʻOlekūkolu, ʻOlepau
Anahulu Poepoe: Mahina is becoming round
Huna, Mōhalu, Hua (flowering, fruiting)
Full moons (Fulfillment, energy, feminine power)
Akua, Hoku, Māhealani, Kulu
Lāʻau moons (Rejuvenation, healing)
Lāʻaukūkahi, Lāʻaukūlua, Lāʻaupau
Anahulu Hoʻēmi: Mahina is waning
ʻOle moons - part two (Rest, reflect, refine)
ʻOlekūkahi, ʻOlekūlua, ʻOlepau
Kāloa moons (Cleanse and release)
Kāloakūkahi, Kāloakūlua, Kāloapau
Kāne, Lono, Mauli, Muku (Honor, ascension, completion)
Each moon is ideal for certain activities. Moon calendars emphasize the role Mahina plays in farming and fishing, and shows the flow of life in the natural world, the community and within the self. In this context, Mahina continuously influences how every person lives. As for kilo, that helps us to navigate through the moon cycle. Kilo means to observe, and to study the natural world. When you kilo, the experience of life should be felt as well as seen. Thatʻs the kilo that connects the heavens to the body, to the earth.

As I sit here in my living room with the three of us who created this image, we have been trying to come up with what this photo means to us. This photo embodies, aloha “love”, strength “ikaika”, humble “ha’aha’a”, roots “huluhulu” and ansestors “kupuna”. This photo brings us to a place of peace and through picking the leaves to make these leis, the actual art of making them and the special connection we all have with hula, this photo is everything. When we create work like this, we remember who we are. #honolulu #oahu #hawaii #sand #bacj #green #goals #hawaiian #beautiful #kākau #tattoo (at Honolulu, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpBmMk6AF9j/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1k2dlwj4eg2fk

Aloha kākau!! Mahalo nui loa for all the love and support following this weekend’s panel on inclusion in the costuming community!! I’m so touched that so many of you talented creators are interested in what we had to say and in making the costuming community a more diverse space where people of color can feel safe. . . It can be emotionally exhausting to be vulnerable about these kinds of experiences, and I was very anxious going into the panel about the type of response we would receive. So I took a day to recoup some spoons, and now I’d like to say thank you for watching our panel and listening to our stories, and welcome the new followers who are joining me on these costuming adventures! . . I have to thank my fellow panelists, @sewstine @tinyangrycrafts @thevintageguidebook @nekonamicosplay @silkenstitches @historicalgarments @reenactorsofcolor @labelladonnahistory. They all had such insightful things to say and I feel like I learned so much listening to these wonderful and talented ladies. I’m honored to be among them for such an important topic. . . And of course, major thanks to @costuming_drama for putting this panel together, for amplifying our voices and giving us a safe space to be honest and vulnerable about our experiences and struggles. Noelle put so much effort and care into making sure that we felt safe and respected and comfortable sharing our thoughts, she really made conditions optimal for us to have this discussion and I appreciate that and her so much. . . Ahhh I’m running out of space, so come back tomorrow for little piece of Hawaiian culture that I’d like to share with all of you! . . #liloandstitch #lilo #cosplay #cosplayer #diversitymatters #diversityandinclusion #cocovid #hawaii #islandgirl #beachcosplay #disney #disneycosplay #oahu #haleiwa #northshore #hula #costume #costumer #inclusionmatters #hawaiianlife #hemelenolilo #representationmatters #beach #cosplayphotography (at Haleiwa, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDeoPULjyDG/?igshid=wkps5m1s4sa4
