i write a lot of stories with themes of sexual assault, which i know is something that a lot of people have a major problem with; portraying SA in movies or stories because it’s “unnecessary”. SA is something that i’ve personally experienced, so it feels cathartic for me to express my feelings through characters that are not real. the usual argument for it is that you are automatically romanticizing sexual assault by writing about it and it’s triggering to SA survivors, so it’s wrong to write it.

i find it interesting that (unless in extreme chronic online cases) people have no problem with topics like violence, murder, drugs, alcohol, cheating, etc. which are all topics that could easily be triggering to the right people, but the line is always drawn at something that we as a society feel very uncomfortable mentioning or talking about. topics like sexual assault, suicide, abuse, and self harm are ridiculed because they can be triggering, completely disregarding the fact that literally anything can be triggering from someone throwing up on screen, a cheese burger, a kitchen knife, a dark alley way, anything. just because something upsets you, that doesn’t give you the right to call the writers immoral and “romanticizing” something by simply talking about it and not acting like it doesn’t exist.

art is often supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. you don’t get to decide where to draw the line just because you don’t like watching something that you chose to watch.

I think some people forget that some literature and some media is meant to be deeply uncomfortable and unsettling. It's meant to make you have a very visceral reaction to it. If you genuinely can't handle these stories then you are under no obligation to consume them but acting as if they have no purpose or as if people don't have a right to tell these stories, stories that often relate to the darkest or most disturbing parts of life, then you should do some introspection.
