"You don't like it?" Aziraphale asked, turning to face Crowley, who had been silent the entire time. "We have acres of property. You can do with it what you like."

Crowley was still quiet, face a little impassive, sunglasses on. Aziraphale felt his heart skip a beat. Did Crowley not like the location of the cottage? Did he not like the cottage itself. Heaven above, what if he'd messed this all up?!

But when Crowley took his sunglasses off, Aziraphale saw that his eyes were watery.

"This is for us?" he asked.

“Mm hm,” Aziraphale confirmed.

Crowley took a step forward, turning his head, taking in the trees that stretched their limbs towards the sky, the scent of pine needles, the undergrowth, everything.

“Angel.”

“Yes?” Aziraphale’s palms would have been sweating if he was human. Good thing he wasn’t.

Crowley smiled slowly. It wasn’t a thin smile or a cruel smile. It was a large, genuine one that reached the yellow of his eyes.

“These are the most plants I’ve ever owned.” Crowley looked back towards his car, at the plants in their boxes in the backseat. That was all he had… Until now. Now he owned acres of plants. He could garden as much as he wanted. That’s what Aziraphale had wanted for him.

Crowley strode up to Aziraphale, grabbed him by his upper arms, and pulled him into a kiss. They’d kissed many times now, and this one was the best. Aziraphale relaxed into it, into the feel of his demon against him. 

This. This was right.

Unfinished (warning for major character death)

Aziraphale held Crowley in his arms. They were in Heaven, and Aziraphale was on the floor cradling his demon’s head, knowing he didn’t have long with him. His throat ached in a very human way.

“Aziraphale?” 

Crowley’s voice was hoarse, and when he coughed, blood came up on his lips. Heaven had killed him. Aziraphale didn’t know who, but he was going to rain Hell Fire down on the person who had dared to hurt his love. 

“Yes, Crowley. I’m here.” Aziraphale didn’t know how he was keeping it together. He’d known Crowley for about 6,000 years, give or take some. He’d been his only companion, his only friend, his only love. 

“Tell the bastard that did this that… that…”

“No, no! Crowley!” His eyes were getting a distant look, and Aziraphale pulled his head closer. He wanted him to finish what he was saying. He didn’t want anything to go unfinished.

“Tell them there’ll be Hell to pay.”

In a sudden show of strength, using probably what was the last of it, Crowley grabbed Aziraphale by the hair and pulled him down towards his lips. 

“I love you, Angel.”

Aziraphale wanted to say it back, but Crowley kissed him.

Aziraphale felt his last breath against his lips, and everything inside him broke. There had been no time for him to say it back. He’d never said it back. He needed to.

Aziraphale pulled away, very gently closing Crowley’s eyes. He was not in there anymore. The yellow was not his.

“I love you too,” Aziraphale managed to whisper.

Then there was a scream so loud that it tore open Heaven and could be heard down on Earth, and down lower, into Hell. There would be no quiet in Aziraphale’s torment.

“You love me,” Aziraphale said to Crowley after the zombies and Furfur had left the dressing room, after Aziraphale had revealed what he’d done to the image of them.

“What?” Crowley acted like he hadn’t been paying attention, but Aziraphale knew that was a ruse.

Aziraphale sat in the armchair, Crowley still lounging on the couch. It was how a snake would do it if a snake had limbs.

“You saved me. You saved my books. You… You’re hands shook.”

Crowley looked at him now from over his sunglasses. “They didn’t.”

“They did.” Aziraphale was so sure of what he was saying, so sure of what he’d seen. Crowley cared for him. Crowley loved him.

Crowley sighed. He rearranged himself back into a more human shape and sat up. He pulled off his sunglasses, looking at the floor.

“Say I did love you,” Crowley began. “Can you imagine the consequences of it getting out? It almost did tonight.”

Aziraphale said nothing. He saw Crowley’s point.

“So, perhaps I do love you. Perhaps I have for a very long time.” He put his sunglasses back on, looked at Aziraphale. “But Heaven and Hell can never know.” 

Crowley left the dressing room to let Aziraphale clean up, brushing past him on his way out the door. 

And Aziraphale was left with a strange mix of feelings. He was giddy. Crowley loved him. He did, he did! 

But… Heaven and Hell had almost found them out. They could never be together.

Dread and sadness sank into his heart.

And with it, a shred of rebellion. 

Aziraphale smiled to himself, and began to clean off his fake mustache.

8, 13, 16, 19?

8. I actually really love whump without whumper! Sickfic and accidents or natural disasters are some of my favorite. There used to be a fanfic writer in my other fandom who writes mostly hurt comfort fics without any whumper, like being sick while the caretaker is away or getting into car accidents. I reread their fics so much back then. Too bad they deleted their blog :(

13. I think my fave is the type of whumpee who hides their whump (either because their whumper forces them to, their own pride, some secret they have to keep), but then the whump gets too bad and they collapse in front of their friends/lover/family

I used to post/reblog whump stuff on my main blog and I ended up losing posts that I like because it's mixed with my other random posts, so I decided to create this one so that it's neater and more organized. It's also so that I can be more active in whump community for the events and so that my followers won't be spammed with random posts when all they're looking for is whump posts

19. Hmm. I do write a lot of hurt no comfort fics (mostly spin-off oneshots of the main whump fic), and sometimes I do enjoy them, but I think I prefer if there is a resolution where whumpee finally gets to break free/heal, or at least, there is an implicit possibility for whumpee to be saved from the whump, even if it's not directly in that fic/scene. Like if whumpee is in a sickfic and the fic doesn't explain whumpee done being sick/injured, but there is an implicit aspect of "yeah, but the caretaker will be back to help/heal/save them later." As long as there is a possibility of whumpee getting comfort later, I'm okay with it. It's why death whump isn't my cup of tea, because it's clear whumpee did not get any comfort eventually.

What got you into whump?

When I was 14 I started reading Gone by Michael Grant, and I was also watching Teen Wolf. Both are just so insanely violent, and I joke that those works made me vicious. Those two things definitely got me into whump.

5. Whumper turned Whumpee or Whumpee turned Whumper?

Oh, whumpee turned whumper all the way!

7. Emotional or physical whump?

Physical! Plus physical whump most often leads to emotional.

18. Do you prefer visual whump or written whump? Any reason why?

You know, I'm not sure. I can say I love written because I mean, I'm a writer, and I love reading. But also visual is fantastic (I am a screenwriting major for a reason). I honestly can't choose, though! Probably going to cop out on this and say both. Both!

3. Do you anticipate writing for a new fandom this year? Which one?

I mean, not exactly new, but Shadow and bone is coming back this year and I love (and Inej and and Jesper) so I might have to write for them again :)

4. Do you think you’ll stop writing for a fandom this year? Which one?

I never plan on stopping to write for anything?? Fate was cancelled this past year, but the girls in my dash are keeping it alive properly, so who knows. Also, I'm a very comes and goes "finishes a fic three years later" person, so idk.

13. Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic? 

I do occasionally do little posts, mostly humour, but my tiny laptop can't handle photoshop or an equivalent (there's just no space, I kepp having to delete stuff) no my gifs aren't the best - same for videos, I would have to rely on the lightest programs and it's just bad. So I would love to do learn gifs properly, but I don't see it happening :(

24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”

6, 7, 19, 32 for weird questions for writers?

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

Hm... Probably that once I publish I'll receive backlash and harassment, given that I kind of get that anyway for the subjects I handle.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

Creating worlds and characters from nothing. I am a god.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

Well, I started writing as soon as I learned the alphabet, so around 5 years old. I've always had stories in my head to tell, and growing up hasn't changed that. I've never once dropped writing throughout my life.

I started because talking is hard for me, and telling stories through writing just felt so much easier. It's proven to be that way too.

Definite bumps along the way. Like the time I wrote an entire book at like, 13-14 and then deleted it. Never doing that again. I have a little graveyard for things I want to "get rid of." Instead, I just keep them in a folder on google drive.

As for where I am now? Beginning stages of writing a fantasy novel! It's really hard, but also really exciting. I am rearing to actually get to writing it.

I'm hoping to have a published book someday. I've published some stories and essays, but a book of my own would be so cool. (We're ignoring the book I wrote when I was 8 and published through KidPub.)

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

I'm going to sound so cliche, but: "Not all those who wander are lost."

I love this. I love this so much, because it feels like I'm just wandering through life, and definitely floundering at points.

But this reminds me that I'm not lost, and will find a place someday.

Meta asks for writers

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions?

(Plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations? Tell us about them.)

I think this may have come up as a glancing mention in the past but the Deathly Weapons you know is actually a stealth-re-write starting at around Chapter 10.  When I first came up with the idea, I had enough of a detailed outline to carry me to Interference, plus some loose notes for later plot-beats.  In that initial burst of unfettered creativity I kept going and freewrote up to roughly the equivalent of Chapter 17: Assessment in DW’s canon timeline.

There was some fun stuff in there (the “And here I thought I was just a pretty face” quip from Zatanna in Chapter 18/ Mission 1 comes from the OG version of Chapter 10) but there was also a reason I didn’t release those versions, and was already wanting to go back and re-do them.  The stealth-draft was incredibly barebones/compressed in places and some now-key scenes were straight-up missing (Propositions, Constants and Roads to Safe Places were all timeskipped over).  Plus I was leaning more heavily into fanon since I hadn’t decided to go back and revisit either show yet, which meant things were more surface-level and “standard” in a few ways.  In the stealth-draft, Ghost-Obsessions were explicit lore a headcanon which is fine but that I realised didn’t interest me or serve the story that much on consideration, Danny was more of an OP Gary-Stu type the OG version of the training session was a free-for-all spar where he beat the whole Team, which… no, and Danny and Wally’s conflict was a lot more superficial/arbitrary/unsatisfying.

I’ve walked myself to the stocks over this before but in the spirit of good-natured lampooning I’m happy to rummage through the old draft some more should you want further samples to jeer and hiss at.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about?

(Symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Considering my status as a shameless meta aficionado who can and will ramble for up to 20 pages on the barest prompting, one could say you’re playing a dangerous game here, nonnie.

For the sake of brevity I’m going to rapid-fire a bunch of meta I’d love to talk about and let anyone who’s interested take their pick:

I haven’t found a place to really dig into it in-story, but I went and read Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland etc. collection for extra Artemis material, and there’s some interesting parallels you could read into between Alice/Artemis and The Cheshire Cat/Jade, and what it suggests about their dynamic.  It could also indicate some things about how they themselves perceive their relationship given that Jade deliberately took the name Cheshire as her alias in-universe.  The Nguyen-Crock sisters are interesting.

YJ!Wally deviates from many iterations of Comics!Wally in that he canonically has a loving and functional homelife rather than an abusive one.  I have some potentially-controversial but mostly sappy thoughts about why that changed backstory is actually good for this iteration of the character and what it lets him bring to his version of the Team.

The central emotional arc of Deathly Weapons is Danny/Phantom’s journey through grief to healing.  I like how the planned scenes ended up coming together in a pattern where he initially tries to avoid talking about it with other people, then starts to reluctantly talk when asked, then starts talking freely when prompted, and eventually starts willingly volunteering information as he begins to form new bonds and move forward.  It wasn’t a conscious thing when I first set them out but it feels correct in hindsight.

There’s lots of little things that I’m either setting up on purpose to pay off later or have found ways to bring back as echoes in late-game chapters:

Danny’s appearance at Cadmus has developed into a pretty seminal point for his and Team Phantom’s journey between leaving Amity Park and joining The Team.  More information to come in Equilibrium but keep an eye out for references to the incident or things about his left shoulder.

I recently did some Martian Meta in prep for M’gann’s later focus chapter but there’s also a dynamic I’ve started setting up between her and Phantom (especially in the sparring scene) and it’s going to be interesting to see if anyone picks up on where that’s going.

There’s a very late game scene where Danny is talking to Conner about Danielle and The Clone Thing where I have Danny planned to say “but either way, she’s here and she picked our side.  The how and why… guess it just didn’t take that long to stop mattering” as an echo of Bruce’s conversation with Clark in the YJ Episode Schooled.

There’s a conversation between Wally and Dick in the final chapters whose ending parallels the end of Danny and Dick’s scene in Trade Secrets, paying off a promise that will be made in Equilibrium.

And, as you can see, there is so much Equilibrium character-meta which I am desperate to discuss about but also don’t want to talk about for spoiler reasons.  I am going to be so normal about it when publication day comes.

Lily couldn’t quite breathe a sigh of relief. Not just yet. Not until she had James. Not until he was safe. 

Kyle had let out a crow of delight half an hour ago when he finally cracked the location on where Dexter was holding James. On wherever this mysterious stranger who was sending them videos was too. Max was skeptical of that person’s intentions. 

“Doesn’t matter. Main thing is to get James.” Lily clutched her phone tightly in case another video came through. 

“And stop Dexter,” Kyle added. 

“And stop Dexter,” Max echoed. 

Lily was about to open her mouth when their phone vibrated. Another video link came through. With a dry mouth, Lily clicked the link. 

She wished she hadn’t. 

Dexter was back with James. But James was still unconscious, still slumped over in the ropes. The blood had begun to dry a little on his face and Lily didn’t see any new wounds. But that didn’t mean Dexter wasn’t going to hurt him again. 

“Oh, James, what am I ever going to do with you?” Dexter growled as he circled James. He twirled a knife in his hand. “You just don’t seem to be getting the gravity of the situation you’re in.”

“What’s happening? What is--”

Lily shushed Kyle. She needed to hear. Needed to see. 

Suddenly Dexter was on James, fisting his hair once more, lifting his head roughly. Dexter ran the tip of the knife down James’ bloodied cheek. “I could just end it all now. Right now and be done with you.”

Please. Please. God. Don’t do that. Lily begged the universe to protect James. 

“But then I wouldn’t get the satisfaction of watching your eyes. Of watching your team fail.” Dexter dropped James’ head roughly. “So I’ll wait.” 

He stabbed the knife through James’ thigh. James woke with a raw scream, suddenly jolting up and away from Dexter. 

Dexter chuckled. “Doesn’t mean I can’t have my fun, though.”

As the camera panned down and away, James’ screams of pain grew louder. The voice came in a sharp whisper once more, “I’d hurry if I were you.” And the screen went black. 

“Hurry,” Lily said as she stared at the darkened screen. “We don’t have much time.”

Not really. I remember specific scenes, but not anything word-for-word.

12. Do you prefer writing the build up to a whump scene or the aftermath?

Definitely the aftermath. It's just so fun and there's so much potential for what can happen, especially when other characters get involved.

13. Do you prefer reading the build up to a whump scene or the aftermath?

I think I like the build up more for reading!

build-a-whumpee: final summary

man, a week sure flies by fast. i was checking the results of the build-a-whumpee experiment yesterday to see how it was doing and realized "oh shit! this ends tomorrow!"

and now that tomorrow is here! so without further ado, the Ideal Kidnapping Scenario Based On The Results Of My Silly Little Poll Game Issss *drum roll intensifies*

More than one whumper gets together to set whumpee as their target for their latest scheme, and after careful consideration, no other person is picked; just whumpee is good enough. Whumpee is all alone when the whumpers attack, and they are terrified out of their mind. Still, they do their best to get away, but unfortunately, their best is not enough. They are brought down swiftly, whether through drugs or some kind of injury, which incapacitates them enough to prevent further escape attempts. Their time in captivity is a nightmare, as their whumpers continuously mess with them and refuse to let them forget their situation and how it may never end. But not all is lost, as their faithful friends and family learn very quickly that something is up with whumpee and that they need help. With absolutely zero hesitation, the group bands together to bust whumpee out and pay sweet revenge to those who thought it was okay to hurt their friend. The state they find whumpee in is horrible, so much so that whumpee is completely unresponsive as they get them out of there and back to a safe location. Recovery is a bumpy road, and it's obvious the whumpee will never forget about their experience, but with lots of comfort and care courtesy of their loved ones, they will one day laugh and smile somewhat similar to how they used to, which is good enough for them.

So there you have it, the collective winning choices from all 12 polls. Of course, if only some of it or even none of it is your jam, that is perfectly okay! There are many different ways to enjoy the trope, and even some of the choices I voted for didn't end up winning. The whump community is a vast place with lots of imagination after all >;)

And honestly, I wouldn't mind doing this again in the future with other tropes like illness or torture. As this week went on, I realized there was a lot more I could have added to make this more specific (questions like "did whumper(s) do the kidnapping or did they hire someone else," "why did whumper(s) target whumpee to begin with," and in general realized that I left some answers a little vaguer than I meant to), so if I were to do a repeat of this, I have a more solid idea on how to do it and make it even better :D
