Anakbayan New York condemns the murder of 14 farmers on the afternoon of Saturday, March 30, 2019 in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental in the Philippines. The victims were wrongfully red-tagged and gunned down during simultaneous police raids throughout the province. . Coming on the heels of the Sagay 9 massacre just this past October, the slaughter of innocent farmers is nothing new under the fascist Duterte administration. Around 200 farmers have been killed since Duterte took office, many of them labor and union leaders fighting for the basic rights of exploited Filipinos in rural areas. Conditions in the countryside worsen each day as Duterte’s policies continue to cater to foreign interests, escalating the cost of basic necessities in the Philippines, such as rice. . Those bearing the brunt of such policies are the masses themselves. It is no accident, then, that among those killed in the Canlaon City crackdown were activists and leaders of local peasant organizations who have long been rallying for economic justice in the region. We have seen time and again how Duterte’s war on the NPA and so-called “War on Drugs” is little more than an excuse to slaughter and jail innocent people––especially poor people, peasants, and farmers peacefully advocating for change. . “It is a sad reality that those who work hard to produce food for the rest of the nation have nothing to provide for themselves and their families. Even more appalling is the fact that when our farmers are not dying of starvation, they find themselves gunned down and rained upon by bullets," said Kabataan Party-list Representative Sarah Elago. . Anakbayan New York calls on all Filipinos––here in the U.S. and back in the Philippines––to condemn the Duterte administration in his war against the poor, activists, and indigenous people. We demand Duterte’s ouster! We condemn this bureaucratic-capitalist system of government, which is incapable of addressing the basic problems of farmers and peasants! . Justice for the 14 victims of the Canlaon Massacre! Stop the killings in the Philippines! . #REPOST photos from Concerned Artists of the Philippines . #OustDuterte #JusticeForNegros14 #JusticeForSagay9 https://www.instagram.com/p/BvzrE4-hWT5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rdi3cbpu5sog

Oppression of the society and refusal of marginalized communities must be eradicated. Injustices are rampant in today's authoritarian system, thus resulting in atrocities. #EndStateFascism #JusticeForSagay9 #StopKillingFarmers

Main feature: GROUNDED
Grounded is a digital art created by Sebastian Penayes. It follows a linear technique; defined lines encloses figures within the artwork and makes use of colors to enhance its mood and emotions even more. With regards to the chosen artwork’s colors, it mostly consists of dull, muted colors. The appearance also seem to be comic-like and faded, similar to the other pieces created by the artist. This adds to the gloomy feel intended to be shown in relation to the theme and subject of Grounded. The said artwork depicts the recent killing of the nine farmers in Sagay city. They are arranged in a circular position in this artwork and according to Guillermo, circles symbolize unity, perfection, or oneness. This just says how the Filipino farmers aim for the same things in life. In addition, a style of social realism can also be seen from his artwork, wherein a socio-political protest and comment is involved. “#JusticeForSagay9” was included in the caption of the artist showing protest regarding the recent killing. This is one of of the reasons on why our group chose this artwork. It shows one of the worsts and current issues happening in the Philippines. In addition, we are studying in the University of the Philippines and this have surely influenced our outlook and opinions on things including art.
The depicted subject matter, as mentioned previously, is the recent killing of nine farmers from Sagay city. The social issue portrayed in Grounded is a current one and most people, if not all, are aware of it. Well, they should be. It is something that should never be forgotten and that is how its medium, digital, compliments the artwork and its message. Unlike traditional art, digital ones can be copied and shared multiple times. This means a wider audience which is good because Grounded is something needed to be seen by many.  In addition, digital art cannot be or is very hard to destroy unlike traditional artworks which can easily be damaged when not properly taken care of. Thus, the digital artwork and whatever message it communicates to its audience will remain for a long period of time. This just shows how the said artwork, its message, and its medium greatly complements one another.
Bastinuod also shares his works through instagram. This social media platform is very known for images of celebrities, food, sceneries, etc. and so uploading his works here is a smart move. It will be odd for the instagram users to see images, and artworks most especially, which they aren’t used to seeing in instagram. However, this will make his artworks stand out. Most of the time, what people remembers are the things new to them. Thus, uploading an artwork like Grounded in a social media full of aesthetically pleasing images will surely get it a good amount of attention.
Art critique on the formal elements of the artwork can be read here. Stylistic analysis was also conducted here.

Justice for Sagay 9! . We condemn the massacre of nine farmers from Sagay City, Negros Occidental this past October 20. . At around 9pm that night, 14 members of the National Federation of Sugar Workers were resting inside their hut after a day's work in their Land Cultivation Area at Hacienda Nene, Purok Pine Tree, Barangay Bulanon, Sagay City, when they were suddenly fired at. 9 were killed including women and minors. According to initial reports, around 40 armed men fired at the victims, and some of the bodies were burned. . This is the 8th peasant massacre under the Duterte regime, putting the number of peasants killed for the past 27 months at 172. . The Duterte regime's incessant tagging of militant farmers as rebels or terrorists has effectively commanded armed forces, as part of Oplan Kapayapaan, to attack farmers who are merely asserting their rights - leading to a rise in peasant killings and massacres. . We call on all Filipino youth to stand with the Sagay 9 and condemn this latest atrocity against farmers perpetuated under the Duterte Administration. . #JusticeforSAGAY9 #StopKillingFarmers #endstatefacism https://www.instagram.com/p/BpR1n1vBtl_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=74venhnahny8
