L frowns at that comment. “Do you think this game might prove your guilt?

Light grits his teeth.

He puts the last pawn down, harder than he intended to.

“Shall we?” Light gestures at the pieces, flashing L his perfect good boy smile.

Author’s note:

L and Light’s game is heavily inspired by an iconic chess match, “Kasparov’s Immortal” (Kasparov vs Topalov 1999). It’s a really good game, and I thought I could liken it to Lawlight’s Tom and Jerry ass dynamic. You can see the game here: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1011478

This story can be taken platonically (romance if you squint). This is set after Light and Misa contact each other, but Misa doesn’t get captured almost immediately.

L is a dead man walking.

All of that jet black mane, eyebags, en-route diabetic, about to be the world’s once greatest detective.

Light cannot predict the future by any means, but he won’t become god if he didn’t try to imagine a future wherein he succeeds.

His ideal world where Kira reigns as justice. Misa by his side, working with newer, and stronger allies, the Task Force forever stupid.

No L to breathe down his neck.

He sighs, leaning his head on the back of the couch. It’s the farthest thing from easy, yet it has to be done.

“Sleepy?” The older man drawls out, not even turning around to face him.

“I’m not. I’m just tired.”

“Are you struggling with midterms?”

Light shoots him a quick glare to the back of his head. He crosses his legs and props his chin on his knuckles. “I’m tired of trying to prove my innocence to you.”

“Oh?” L quirks, glancing at Light’s reflection in one of the blank monitors. “Proving, pretending, any normal person would crumble under suspicion. It’s only natural.”

An insinuation. The fact that Light has not crumbled under L, of all people, doesn’t make him normal.

Light ignores the bait, moving instead to pull an ornate box under the coffee table. He had been eyeing it on multiple occasions, the unmistakable checkered design of its surface signifying its purpose. He pulls the tiny drawer to reveal the pieces, all carved and delicate.

It’s a fancy chess set. Nothing surprising.

“Do you know how to play?”

“I do.”

The desk chair creaks under L’s weight.

”How did you learn?”

“My father taught me when I was a child.”

Only the basics. Light learned by playing against himself, disappointed by his classmates’ rudimentary skills.

“Would you like to play a game with me then?”

He looks up to see L settle down on the armchair across from him. Palms over his knees in that strange way he sits, sucking on a lolly.

“Sure. But don’t get mad when I beat you.” Light taunts with a grin.

L pulls the lolly out of his mouth. “I take white.”

Light scoffs. “Claiming the first move? Are you desperate to win already, Ryuzaki?”

L runs his thumb over his bottom lip. “I always make the first move. But given your intellect, surely this advantage is marginal.”

Light looks at him exasperatedly. “Fine, I take black then.”

He starts arranging all the pieces to their proper places. Rook, knight, bishop…

“Do you like playing chess?”

Light pauses and finds that he could answer in truth. “I do.” He puts down a few more pieces before continuing. “It’s mentally stimulating without being overly complicated.”

“Indeed.” L mutters, reaching towards the table to reorient some of the pieces to his liking. “I find that chess can reveal a lot about a person.”

Light isn’t surprised. He’d known L was going to test him the moment he placed the box on the table. Always prying and picking his brain apart, like he’s convinced he could find some new life form inside Light’s skull.

“Trying to prove I’m Kira through a chess game? Are you grasping at straws now, Ryuzaki?”

L frowns at that comment. “Do you think this game might prove your guilt?”

Light grits his teeth.

He puts the last pawn down, harder than he intended to.

“Shall we?” Light gestures at the pieces, flashing L his perfect good boy smile.

They take little time to start. Pawns move first, opening the path for the more powerful pieces. Knights and bishops advance. Light moves his queen early, capturing a bishop. More pawns move and get captured, slowly freeing up the board.

Light doesn’t waste any time. He positions his queen to check L’s king.

L grins at him. “Someone is eager.”

Light makes no comment on that, beckoning L to hurry up and make his move. L moves his king out of range.

They press on. L’s knight captures Light’s knight. Light’s pawn takes L’s knight. L moves his queen to taunt Light’s queen. Light ignores it.

Light moves his rook to check L’s king.

L pauses, blinking a few times at the board.

He raises a brow at L. “What?”

“You really know how to play this game well.” L answers with a smile, reaching forward to grab another lolly from the tray of treats.

“No. I just want to make you lose.” Light bites back. It’s nothing but the truth.

“Have I done something to hurt your feelings?”

“Plenty.”

“Oh.”

L picks a cola-flavored lolly and reaches it to him. “I’m sorry. Will you forgive me?”

Light takes the lolly with hesitation. He doesn’t really like sweets, and this seems like an odd flavor. He removes the wrapper and pops the lolly in his mouth and surely enough, it tastes like shit.

“If it’s not to your taste, you can give it to me.”

Light doesn’t even bother to hide his cringe. “That’s not hygienic, Ryuzaki.”

L shrugs. “Do you carry transmissible diseases?”

Light stares at him blankly. He pops the lolly out of his mouth and hands it to L, who put it in his mouth without hesitation.

Gross.

Maybe he could kill L by making him eat something foul.

“Shall we?” L gestures back to the board, voice muffled behind two lollies.

They resume. The game turns to quite the entertaining hunt. Light uses his queen to pressure L’s king, checking him several times. But L keeps pressing forward, evading by using his king to capture Light’s pieces along the way. Defending by advancing.

Before long, L’s king had reached the end of the board after getting checked seven times. Quite the funny sight, their two kings a tile apart, unable to capture the other.

Kings locked in a stalemate.

“I think your king is on the wrong side, Ryuzaki.” Light teases. L chuckles in response.

The board has been mostly cleared now. They still have each of their queens, two rooks for L, a bishop and a rook for Light. Light is seemingly at a disadvantage, having sacrificed his other rook earlier.

Only seemingly. After all, he has a pawn only two tiles away from promotion.

A strategy to play two queens.

Of course, without a doubt L has already caught on to his plan. But first, he needs to force L to forget his king’s defense…

Light moves his bishop backward, daring L’s queen to capture it.

Instead, L moves his rook within range of Light’s queen. A clever move, L’s king would have captured Light’s queen had he fallen for it.

The way their pieces were positioned, if L captures Light’s queen using his rook, L’s king will be left unprotected and it would have been checkmate. His best bet is to move his queen to pressure Light’s queen.

At least that’s what Light thought. L didn’t think so, moving his rook to capture Light’s rook.

Light raises an eyebrow at him, moving his bishop to capture L’s queen.

L stares deadpan at the board before feigning a loud gasp. “Oops.” He says monotonously. “My mistake.”

Light rolls his eyes at L’s display. “Your move, Ryuzaki.”

L tuts, taking one of the lollies out of his mouth to wag at him. “So impatient.”

L captures Light’s bishop with a pawn.

“Since you are such a good player.” L says while waving the captured bishop around. “Have you considered playing competitively?”

“I have no interest.”

“A shame. You could make a fortune out of it.”

Light advances his queen to take L’s other rook, the one unmoved from its corner. Now he just needs to stall…

Wait.

L advances his remaining rook, and Light suddenly realizes his blunder.

“You see, Light,” L starts, his depthless eyes trained on his own. “You are too greedy, too fixated on gaining more power that you fail to see you’ve already lost.”

Light narrows his eyes at him. He looks back to L’s king.

Shit.

The pawn. The one that captured his bishop, just a step behind L’s rook.

If he moves his queen back to defend his king, L would just move his pawn forward. If Light captures the pawn, either L’s rook or king will capture his queen.

He lets out a sigh through his nose. He moves his queen to the opposite side. L moves his pawn forward.

Light advances his queen and checks L’s king again, for the last time. It’s a useless move, but Light does it anyway.

L chuckles, moving his king. “You really hate to lose, don’t you Light?”

Light glares at him, moving his king closer to L’s.

It’s over. L moves his rook.

A checkmate by a rook and a pawn.

“Looks like I win.” L teases, smirking at him with those damned lollies. Light clicks his tongue in defeat.

He leans back on the couch, stretching his arms upward. “Congratulations, Ryuzaki. You win this game.”

“Thank you. I had fun.”

“I did too.” Light begrudgingly admits.

“Had you succeeded obtaining a second queen, I would have lost.”

Light shrugs, crossing his leg, resting his hands primly over his knee. ’You’ll lose to me eventually.’ He wants to say.

“Well what do you think, Ryuzaki?” Light asks instead. “Does this game increase my Kira percentage?” He says mockingly, smirking at L.

“Mmmmmmmm.” L hums like an indecisive child, still with two sticks in his mouth. He promptly crunches on the remaining bit of candy and tosses the sticks on the table. One of them lands on the chessboard, to Light’s disgust.

“Maybe just a little bit.”

Light is unimpressed.

“But truthfully…”

L fixes him a level stare, before flashing him a knowing grin.

“I think Kira sucks at playing chess.”

Light couldn’t hold back his laugh.

hiii would love to hear your thoughts on the counselors? maybe some of your favorite dynamics from the game? anything you'd change about it? lmao i am so interested in what other people thought of the game and especially the characters.

omg yes i was hoping for an ask like this!! i'll go through the characters as they came up and do like general little thoughts after that

laura: probably THE BEST character supermassive has ever made. her arc throughout the game was just so satisfying to watch and her actress killed every part of it. like i didn't mind she kind of has plot armor because i think she was such a well written character.

max: max is max. i didn't really like him pre-release but he's alright i guess. he's not in the game enough for me to truly care about him but he did grow on me a little more. love the max and laura reunite ending.

emma: emma and abi were CRIMINALLY underused. honestly anyone who wasn't ryan and laura (and kaitlyn & dylan to an extent) were underused. anyways i loved emma! i know people already hate her because of the truth or dare stuff/jacob things but i think she's a really fleshed out character. she gets a lot of humanizing moments for why she does the thing she does. she was super compelling! deserved more baddie moments.

jacob: he is such a dumbass but he's my dumbass. love that he stays in his underwear the whole game following in miss jessica riley's footsteps! even though jacob can be a huge dick a lot of the time, he was so charming still. i'd be like "jacob stop pestering emma" but there was also a part of me always rooting for him.

kaitlyn: ate ms. giddings up!!! i knew she was gonna be great. should've been the one to go with laura to kill chris. she was literally the most competent character and the fact she gets sidelined for ryan is so annoying. i wish she had wayyyyyy more playtime.

ryan: well...if you've been reading this you've probably gathered i don't like ryan...which sucks because i like justice smith. i said to a friend that he has mike munroe syndrome where the game clearly wants me to care about him which kind of had the opposite effect. he was kind of just not that interesting compared to everyone else. the moment where my opinion changed from neutral to dislike is when laura comes back and ryan continues to resist her. it went on for WAYYYYY too long and i feel like he never changes his mind until he actually kills chris.

dylan: man i really tried to resist liking him but i ended up loving this man so much. he was such a good time and his dynamic with kaitlyn was such a pleasant surprise. king of getting his hand cutoff!

nick: oh nicky poor thing. nick really gets the short end of the stick. i feel like making him the only character (besides laura and max) who you can't prevent him getting infected. it really hindered the game i think. nick's the only counselor we hardly get to know and basically disappears at the midpoint of the game. i liked what little we got of the real nick though!

abigail: on my first playthrough i found abi kind of boring? she didn't get to do a whole lot. she was sweet and cute but she was just kind of there. the most interesting thing she got to do in my first playthrough was try and hand kait the silver shells. on multiple playthroughs she's gotten more interesting to me. abigail never got to really have her moment y'know? like she isn't an action girl like the other girls but i would've loved for her to do something INSANE (her shooting nick is the closest we ever get.)

i loved the game despite the criticisms i have and i really think it's up there with until dawn!

On the BLM Protests

The current state of events in America requires that people everywhere in the country stand up against police brutality and systemic racism. The murder of George Floyd was cruel and inhumane, and the tipping point for Black Americans in this country after centuries of systemic oppression, discrimination, and abuse in this country. I urge you to first: use your heart and empathize and stand in solidarity with the Black community in this time of mourning, rather than try to justify George Floyd's death. Listen to what they have to say.  Next, use your mind to educate yourself on systemic oppression in this country and how we can overcome it and acknowledge bias present within ourselves and this country. Then, take action: use your voice and vote to advocate for legislature that sets a standard for necessary force, limits methods of force that police officers are using, and holds police officers accountable for their actions. Use your efforts and resources to donate to groups and organizations that fight against systemic racism, like the Equal Justice Initiative. At the end of the day, these protesters are people like me who are fed up with Black lives being murdered daily and no one caring. These long overdue protests are to oppose systemic and structural racism that is at the root of this country; seen in the medical fields, real estate, income disparities, education systems, and criminal justice system in this country that have treated minorities unjustly since day one. The fact of the matter is that a man was murdered over twenty dollars by a police officer, and the sad truth is that most police officers (99%) who murder unarmed citizens aren't punished in any way at all- we're lucky to finally see all four oficers charged. The fact that this man was killed over twenty dollars and people in this country care more about property than black lives and systemic racism says a lot about what the power structures in this country prioritize and value. Please, use what's happened to bring tangible change to fruition instead of letting this movement die out. If we continue to be complacent, the status quo will continue, which perpetuates the oppressive regime of police brutality and other forms of systemic racism in this country. It might be difficult for some, but we MUST acknowledge the realities that the marginalized people of America are living through in order to truly deliver "liberty and justice for all". Silence IS violence, and I hope that the ongoing protests finally bring change to this country. We must not only support the Black community and grieve with them, but also help them combat the systemic racism that is at the root of the community's suffering. Many people in my community (myself included) have privilege, so I ask you to use your privilege to the benefit of everyone in society. Hand-sewn a lunch bag today. Fingers hurt.

I was badtrip at the church entrance. No social distancing on falling in line. I did not waste time to be in that crowd so I entered without checking body temperature and alcohol.

I was trying wearing liturgical colors. Then I thought of pink and violet. I dislike those colors.

Nosy people are just around. Nothing to do with their lives. I'll play with their insecurities.

Whoa!. I was scolded for a mistake I did not intentionally do.

What my father said:

1.) "Tama si Kinjo pari gid man ing nailaan. Samad ing ueo!."

My brain laugh out loud. Is he Kinjo Villanueva Nosotros, the most popular suki at the jails of the Philippine National Police?. Haha. And so?. The whole neighborhood laughs like me. Haha. The Rev. Fr. Arvic Magno Jimenez is the one who is samad do ueo, so does my family. Still wonder why the Rev. Fr. Arvic Magno Jimenez is being called a hypocrite?. Haha.

2.) "Wa it pueos imong tinun-an."

Haha. Why don't he ask DOLE why I am their one and only educated child. Haha. He make hiself tanga!.

And guess what?. My mother talks stupid. Saying nonsense. All she said to me is for Kinjo. Haha. Broken brains. My mother is like the Rev. Fr. Arvic Magno Jimenez, uneducated version. But the Rev. Fr. Arvic Magno Jimenez seems uneducated based on how he treat me. He is the only priest I knew who is like that. Hmm. Why Oh Why?. My mother has sinned alot to me and she will pay for it. She does not know a person. The traitor just laugh at a serious person telling what she feels. She just turned back. She does not know what she's doing. Haha. She does not know what she's saying also, that is why she is not ashamed of. Aguilao too is like them.

My mother who is mapanira, and its because she is easily gets persuaded by those mapanira people she listens to, and also its hereditary. Its in her blood. And my father who is just being fooled by adversive people. I will just put up with them until they die. I am still waiting for my upcoming spotlight.

I am thankful that they are not the one who raised me well. And that I became human. I can't be thankful with or to parents like them.

They're unforgiven!.

I have already said that I will not get married. I'd rather seek justice to what those adversive people done to me. I was not born to be unknown in this world. And even if the world turned, I am still the heir of the family.

Thug Who Shot Cop Utters 3 Disgusting Words, Judge Wipes Smug Grin Off His Face

An Oregon man had three shocking words in court before being sentenced to prison for shooting at police officers and taking a Subway employee hostage. Jeffrey Giddings was sentenced to 30 years in prison after an incident in August 2016 that began when police stopped him while he was riding a bike. After they began to talk to Giddings, officers discovered that there was a warrant out for his arrest. Suddenly, Giddings began shooting at them and Sgt. Lee Jundt was hit in his vest.

In court, Jundt spoke to Giddings directly.

“You, Mr. Giddings, are a coward and a selfish individual, beyond comparison. May you be in torment for the rest of your life,” Jundt said. “I forgive you for your actions that day, but rest assured, I will never forget.”

Giddings also took Subway restaurant employee Liz Mincer hostage for two hours. Mincer was eventually rescued when SWAT officers shot through the window and hit Giddings.

“I have my good days and bad days,” Mincer said. “He changed me. He changed my life.”

Though Giddings expressed no remorse during Jundt’s appearance, he did apologize to Mincer.

“I just want to say I am truly sorry for the mental anguish I put you through,” he said, KPTV reported. “I feel real bad for what I did to you and I think about it every day. I hope you can forgive me.”

Giddings doubled down on his emotionless response to Jundt’s injuries and statement by first telling him that he wasn’t a coward and then taking the opportunity to send a profane message.

“And to the rest of law enforcement,” he said in court before turning to a camera, “F*** the police. Thank you. That’s all I have to say.”

Giddings received an extra 30 days in prison for using profanity in court.

Many readers called for Giddings to be sentenced to death for his crime against police.

“If you shoot at an officer of the law. It should be manditory the penalty should be death. The prisons are filled to the brim with scumbags such as this one. I as a tax payer am fed up with the bulls*** appeal system. To allow this savage to hang out for 30 plus years on our dime,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“This piece of s*** should have been given the only thing he understands. Street justice. He should have never made it to court. Now tax payers get to support this useless piece of humanity for the rest of his life,” another wrote.

“Another drain on society, if he does his entire sentence he’ll be what, almost 70? He looks to be in his 30,s he will get out and automatically be set up on social security ,food stamps,section 8 housing etc, etc! Long drop from a short rope! Problem solved!” another added.

Thug Who Shot Cop Says Three Shocking Words In Court

An Oregon man had three shocking words in court before being sentenced to prison for shooting at police officers and taking a Subway employee hostage.

Jeffrey Giddings was sentenced to 30 years in prison after an incident in August of 2016 that began when police stopped him while he was riding a bike. When they began to talk to Giddings, officers discovered that there was a warrant out for his arrest. Suddenly, Giddings began shooting at them and Sgt. Lee Jundt was hit in his vest.

In court, Jundt spoke to Giddings directly.

“You, Mr. Giddings, are a coward and a selfish individual, beyond comparison. May you be in torment for the rest of your life,” Jundt said. “I forgive you for your actions that day, but rest assured, I will never forget.”

Giddings also took Subway restaurant employee Liz Mincer hostage for two hours, until SWAT officers shot through the window and hit the man.

“I have my good days and bad days,” Mincer said. “He changed me. He changed my life.”

Though Giddings expressed no remorse during Jundt’s appearance, he did apologize to Mincer.

“I just want to say I am truly sorry for the mental anguish I put you through,” he said, KPTV reported. “I feel real bad for what I did to you and I think about it every day. I hope you can forgive me.”

Giddings doubled down on his emotionless response to Jundt’s injuries and statement by telling him that he wasn’t a coward, and then sending a message to other law enforcement officials.

“And to the rest of law enforcement,” he said in court before turning to a camera, “Fuck the police. Thank you. That’s all I have to say.”

Many readers called for Giddings to be sentenced to death for his crime against police.

“If you shoot at an officer of the law. It should be manditory the penalty should be death. The prisons are filled to the brim with scumbags such as this one. I as a tax payer am fed up with the bullshit appeal system. To allow this savage to hang out for 30 plus years on our dime,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“This piece of shit should have been given the only thing he understands. Street justice. He should have never made it to court. Now tax payers get to support this useless piece of humanity for the rest of his life,” another wrote.

“Another drain on society, if he does his entire sentence he’ll be what, almost 70? He looks to be in his 30,s he will get out and automatically be set up on social security ,food stamps,section 8 housing etc, etc! Long drop from a short rope! Problem solved!” another added.
