Civil disobedience, act 4: art and symbols

Demonstration art could be one of the most powerful ways to convey your message. Iranians have been making art all over the cities these days.

Painting the city with blood: Putting red color in water bodies around the city. throwing red color at street signs specially those that reads Velayat (supreme leading system), hijab, and Kurdistan. putting red blood on pictures of Khamenei, Ghasem Soleimani, and police or judiciary signs. Coloring the university classes and corridors with red. One art classroom door in Alzahra university read "this classroom is covered in blood". These red colors represent the blood the regime has shed.

Pictures on the walls: Faces of our fallen martyrs. Anti regime pictures. They read: "you kill our love, you are our ISIS" "women life freedom" "women of Iran and Afghanistan against the violence of Talib and mullah" "fuck compulsory hijab" "from 2017 to 2022 this regime would fall like dominos" "ambu-lice (ambulances are being used to move policemen)". A religious figure hide behind religion playing his anti riot forces. On an alley named Azadi (freedom) someone has written "there was so much bravery hidden in this land".

(It's important to know that in Iran, mullahs don't represent religion as much as they represent the regime. For 40 years the turbans have been the heads of political powers. Most of those mullah pictures are directly targeting Khamenei the supreme leader)

Slogans on paper money: these ones say "women life freedom" "queer life freedom" "Baloch life freedom".

Khodanoor Lejei, symbol of the islamic republic cruelty: The bloody Friday in Zahedan was one of the darkest spots in Islamic republic brutal history. Opening fire on a crowd of praying Muslims before they even start protesting. Killing about 100 people of Baloch. But one picture stood out and stood as the face of inhumanity of the regime. Khodanoor Lejei was one of the victims of bloody Friday in Zahedan. An old picture of him went viral after his death. He was arrested a couple of months prior to Mahsa Amini murder and was treated with no dignity. Bound to a pole. water in front of his thirsty body but out of his reach. So in universities, sport games, streets and alleys people have been posing Khodanoor in bound to protest the cruelty. In the last two pictures, the signs read "political" (سیاسی) and "justice" (عدالت)!

Students sing revolution anthems. Artists make digital arts. Musicians make revolution songs. People dance and the security forces attack and arrest them.

There have been balloons flying over the cities with banners containing slogans on them. There have been banners on footbridges situated so that drivers would see them. People also have been writing slogans on billboards especially those that promote regime propaganda.

Azad university art students gathered in their campus, painted their palms red and raised their hands to the sky.

Meanwhile the regime forces broke into dormitories and stole students.

Some universities including mine design their campus trees and buildings with names of the murdered protesters or captured students and other revolution symbols (red tulip represents martyrs in Persian literature). The uni authorities take them down but the art students do it again.

After Kian Pirfalak, all over the country you could find paper boats and rainbows. Kian was a 10 year old boy who was murdered by the regime. There's a video of him starting with "in the name of the god of the rainbow" and continuing to explain his crafted boat. He wanted to become an engineer. Now paper boats are banned in universities.

One of the murdered protesters, Hamidreza Rouhi, loved riding motorcycles. He had a video online of him on a motorbike lip syncing to a song and pointing to the camera. A group of motorbike riders in Tehran, 7 day after his murder, gathered in front of his house, their motorbikes lined nearby, with pictures of him on each bike.

And in a recent symbolic act, a woman walked around Tehran streets as The Handmaid's Tale cosplayer. Very on point.

Don't think for a second that these civil ways of protesting are safe or easy. People have been arrested or shot in the head doing these.

People are capable of beauties but the regime can only make ugliness. That's the summary of this revolution.

🚨🚨Innocent Man Sentenced to Death as Scapegoat for True Murderer in Iran🚨🚨

So, I'm sure that everyone who's been following current events in Iran has heard of the story of Kian Pirfalak by now. For those of you who don't know, Kian was a nine year old boy who was randomly shot to death in his family's car by someone from the regime, and his father had to be hospitalized due to sustaining horrible injuries himself. His family has constantly been threatened and harassed for wanting to tell the truth about their son's death. (I'll spare you guys some of the more heartbreaking details.)

Now, a man who had nothing to do with Kian's murder was forced to confess to killing Kian under torture and sentenced to death, while the actual killer, who, yes, is with the regime, gets of scot-free. An innocent man is now at risk of being executed at any moment, and we need to bring as much attention to this as possible. In fact, Kian's parents themselves have been adamant that he is not responsible for their son's cruel, untimely death, and we must add our voices to theirs to successfully campaign for his freedom.

Which F:NV factions do you think each Pizza Game character would side with?

THIS. THIS WAS THE QUESTION I WAS BORN TO ANSWER.

This is going to be a VERY long ramble so all my musings will be below the cut! This will be through the lens of the characters being IN the fallout universe and not out-of-universe characters looking in. This is crossing over into my pizza game fallout AU but I’ll try not to let backstory idea bias affect it too much? And mostly base It off the characters preset personalities but if they existed in the fallout universe. though I will have more detail than just “they side with one of the three main factions.”

Kiane! Kiane is presumably the courier/main character perspective in this hypothetical and would likely take the independent route. Doesn’t vibe with any of the factions all the way so she’s gonna do her own arguably dumb thing.

Mister Arimnaes and Baron Von Boo are capitalist bastards and would definitely agree with Mister houses ideology. If some people have to surrender freedom to put people into space and have funny robots run wild so be it. Nancy would also side with house out of probably working there through some means, she understand house keeps people secured but would DEFINITELY not complain about a change in management. Chris is much more neutral on the factions but is more house leaning if anything, the legion are real scary but he doesn’t trust the ncr one bit. He sort of just defaults to it, plus he’s also a firm believer in capitalism, but he doesn’t know the full depth of how fucked up it. But who knows if he’d even care

The civilian force are NCR Stans ALL THE WAY (roobit not as passionate about it though.) They have firm beliefs in justice and defeating the legion, they are probably so blind by their belief in law and order that they don’t notice the corruption within the NCR. Sensei isn’t as militant about it but he will sing the praises of the NCR if you ask. He thinks they’re nice! Brain is more neutral on it all and knows the ncr aren’t all sunshine and rainbows, but when it comes down to it they’d rather side with the ncr then get within fifty feet of the legion. Sort of just a “eh it’s gonna happen eventually, might as well just accept it” sort of thing.

I feel like somehow Johnny through pure bad luck manages to get roped into the legion. He isn’t a horrible person but a comedy of errors led to him believing Caesar’s bullshit rhetoric and once he realized how awful these people were it was too late. Somebody save this guy.

Lamp hates mister house and is terrified of the legion but is too anti-authority to fully accept the NCR. Sav is a complete rogue element, he’s probably in some sort of arcade ganon situation with a completely unrelated weird cult or something. Mother/william is probably heavily involved with said weird cult. Keenarnor is just your average Joe, morally opposed to the legion, untrusting of mister house, but not quite ready for full NCR rule. He just wants to do his honest work and hopes this whole war thing will sort itself out.

CSSP Building: Call of Nature Unanswered

Comfort rooms are among the essential facilities out there wherever one finds themselves, be it public or private— hence their given name. But what could someone do when those places aren’t anywhere near comforting at all?

The CSSP Building, also known as Mendoza Hall, is a building located on the main campus of Bulacan State University (BulSU), near Gate 4. It currently houses two colleges: the College of Criminal Justice and Education (CCJE) and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP). The building mainly houses the latter, hence its local name, commonly known by BulSUans.

In a rather pleasing and tranquil building, there lurks a reeking problem that any student there knows too well. It is the unsanitary and unpleasant-smelling comfort rooms, both on the building’s first and second floors.

"Kian", a third-year Bachelor of Public Administration student, points out the non-availability of tap water and the foul odor emitting from the area. Being a junior, she says that she has no prior idea how long the comfort room problem has existed, as she only started attending physical classes this second semester.

Likewise, sophomore BS Psychology student Skye emphasized that the comfort rooms of their building must certainly be renovated as soon as possible. "Kasi hindi lang mga tao sa CSSP yung gumagamit niyon [comfort rooms]", she said.

Although from a rather distant building on the campus, Jeibhine, a sophomore BSEd Major in English Minor in Mandarin student, also has a say about the matter as he is affiliated with the BulSU SG Mental Health Coalition, chaired by the CSSP Psychology Board Member. He says his frequent visits to the building have also made him aware of the problem; it's the reeking smell that he hates the most.

With all the grievances from the three of them, during an interview with then-CSSP Governor Jaecee Yong, he himself acknowledged the unhygienic and substandard state of their college building’s comfort rooms. The weak running water supply system is among those he noted.

According to him, years before the pandemic struck, the CSSP student population was only around 800, but upon the resumption of on-site classes with the current academic year, the CSSP Local Student Council (CSSP LSC) under his leadership estimated that it had doubled and that their population now stands at around 1,600.

The increase in number was among the reasons why he also saw the importance of their comfort room’s renovation, given that there are also CCJE students and faculties taking classes in their building and sharing their facilities. "Actually, we don't have any actions as we deem na yung properties ng university, yung pagsu-supply ng resources technically ay not within our hands, or our authority", he explained when asked about the CSSP LSC’s plan of action about the problem.

But he added that he and his council have had earlier talks with their local administration and their college dean, Sherwin M. Pariñas, tackling the renovation of their building’s facilities with the comfort rooms included in the plan. The perceived quickest target period for the renovation is said to be two years.

Yong, being a graduating BS Psychology student this year, hopes that the next CSSP LSC will fulfill his council’s lapses and continue to lobby the comfort room problems to their local administration. He stepped down as CSSP governor on April 30 and was succeeded by Merwyn John Cruz.

What’s next for the CSSP comfort rooms?

Merwyn, currently a sophomore BS Psychology student and the newly-elected CSSP governor for the academic year 2023-2024, says that he and his council will certainly put their platforms into fruition.

"I'm looking to conduct a poll in all of CSSP's blocks to get the statistics and consensus that will back the notion of the need for the renovation of our comfort rooms", he said when asked about the problem that he now shoulders. The poll will start at the beginning of the next academic year.

Further, he shared that recent ocular inspections were done to assess the status of their building’s comfort rooms. "We are still looking to communicate with the local admin so that we are able to get the opinion of professionals so that when the renovation starts, the most optimal methods and resources are utilized".

Once a constituent, the incumbent governor said he’s not blind to seeing such a sorry state. He believes that comfort rooms are of the utmost importance and must be given priority along with classrooms.

"The fact that CSSP students are going out of their way just to use clean comfort rooms in other buildings is concrete proof that the renovation and maintenance of the said comfort rooms are needed urgently", he emphasized.

As for the BulSU Student Handbook, there have been 27 recorded mentions of the word facilities, but there are no instances where there are acknowledgements or statements indicating every BulSUan’s right to sanitary and functioning comfort rooms.

Going beyond the university grounds and through history, this somehow counteracts the once-passed PD No. 856, also known as the "Code on Sanitation of the Philippines", signed by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. Under Section 42 Paragraph C, it states that "rest room facilities shall be provided where faculty members can rest and get short respite from teaching chores."

Moreover, RA 11311, signed into law by former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2019, states in Section 4 the standards for sanitary facilities and the need for owners and administrators of land transport terminals to provide "clean sanitary facilities" for their passengers.

With these laws in mind, it is only acceptable for students such as Kian, Skye, and Jeibhine to then question how come there were laws back then and in the present putting an emphasis on clean and hygienic facilities in public areas, but nothing was written about students' rights to have access to these, particularly within their learning environment.

Comfort rooms sure are essential facilities— it’s their purpose why they were built in the first place. But what could someone do when such a place of comfort isn’t given any priority at all?

The family of 16-year-old protester Nika Shakarami claim that her body was stolen by government forces in October. Reza Haghighatnejad, an Iranian dissident journalist, worked in Prague for years for the Iranian branch of the U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). He died of cancer in a Berlin hospital in October. When his body was flown home to Iran at his family’s request, his remains were not found at the airport, according to RFE. According to the NGO Iran Human Rights, at least 448 people, including 60 children, have been killed since the protests began, though the true number is believed to be higher because of the difficulty in accessing death certificates. The seizures have been particularly distressing for the families, who have been denied the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones. Sarah Haghighatnejad, the late journalist's sister, published a video of her brother's tombstone covered with flowers on her Twitter account. "Those who were even afraid of your lifeless body and did not give my mother and me a chance to say goodbye must pay the price,” she wrote. "They are taking away the chance from the mourning families to say goodbye in peace to have the last word with their loved ones," Mehdi Tajik, a journalist and friend of Haghighatnejad, said. "They seize bodies to force the families to either say they were not killed by the police or to force them to bury them without a funeral." Some families have responded by keeping hold of their dead or scrambling to get to morgues where their loved ones are kept. One protester, Mehran Samak, was shot dead while celebrating Iran's World Cup loss to the U.S. on the streets of Anzali, a port city in the north of the country. His death sparked a rush from his family to recover Samak’s body from the morgue, as they were scared he might be buried elsewhere by the authorities in secret, a friend of the family told ABC News. The family of 10-year-old Kian Piraflak, shot dead in Izeh, Khuzestan Province, earlier this month, reportedly kept his body at home rather than a morgue out of fear he would be taken. Videos on social media have circulated showing women carrying buckets of ice, shouting "Ice! Ice for children" to symbolically protest the pain families go through to protect and preserve the bodies of their killed loved ones. "She was forced to make a mobile morgue for the body of her child," an Iranian journalist with knowledge of the alleged thefts told ABC News. The journalist did not want to be named for security reasons. "The fact that a mother cannot even think about seeking justice for the murder of her son, and instead she has to send people around to borrow ice so she can keep the body of her son cold overnight is pure horror and distress."

The charge filed against the six cops of Navotas involved in the botched operation was murder. But Navotas City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 286 convicted only one, Police Staff Sergeant Gerry Maliban, not of murder but of homicide. While murder has the penalty of reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years in prison, Magliban was sentenced to only 4 to 6 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay P50,000 for moral and civil damages.

In explaining why Maliban was convicted of homicide instead of murder, Navotas RTC Branch 286 Clerk of Court Anne Kathryn Diaz read a portion of the decision: “Police Staff Sergeant Maliban cannot be said to have employed means, methods, or forms in the execution of the crime.”

(As stated here, “This is because the urge to shoot the victim materialized only when the victim attempted to escape.” So Maliban only fired his gun when the victim, Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar, attempted to escape.) [she added.]

Baltazar was shot and killed by the local cops on August 2, 2023, which the then-local city police chief later admitted as a lapse in protocol because there was no warning before firing at a person who later turned out to be a mistaken target. Charges were filed against the six cops within the same month or on August 28, 2023.

Baltazar’s case reached a verdict faster than the case of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos, which remains to be the Philippine government’s trophy case as it projects to the international community that the local justice system is working. Delos Santos was 17 years old when he was killed like Baltazar, and his case resulted in a conviction of three local police after a year and three months on trial.

While the verdict was quick for Baltazar, the cases of killings of two other young men who were connected to him remain unsolved. Baltazar’s friends Daniel Soria, 20, was killed in September 2023, and John Rey Basie, 18, in October 2023.

Although President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised an overhaul in law enforcement operations, Baltazar’s killing tainted that promise because of the details that emerged. For one, although police procedures are very clear that the use of megaphones is prescribed to warn a suspect, police instead fired warning shots which is strictly prohibited.

A Senate hearing led by opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros revealed that a cop allegedly asked a witness to lie and say that Baltazar had illegal drugs.

Hazal’s heart went out to Armi and she squeezed her friend's hand tighter, processing everything the other had just shared. Money and influence shouldn't dictate justice, but she understood the reality of how these situations often played out. "I get it. Rich families think they can buy their way out of anything," she muttered, her voice low with frustration. "But Kian acted to protect you. That has to count for something. Justice will prevail. He’s a good man. I refuse to believe he won’t be vindicated." Her gaze dropped to the table as Armi asked about the stalker. She nodded, the memory of that night making her stomach turn. "Yeah... during the gala last week. I was heading to the bathroom when someone grabbed me from behind." She paused, rubbing her arms as goosebumps raised on her skin. "He whispered something about how I belonged to him and threatened Linc if I didn’t leave him. I managed to break free and run, but..." she trailed off, meeting Armi's concerned look. "I haven't felt like myself since then. I keep looking over my shoulder, jumping at shadows. Linc trained me to shoot and self defense, but still, I’m constantly worried someone’s watching and will come out to get me."

Armi bowed her head, unable to escape the shame she felt towards the whole ordeal. Maybe she was over thinking it, but this did, in fact, only happen because of her. So what else was she supposed to do? She didn’t want to be the reason Kian ruined his life. “Yeah, that’s what he kept trying to tell me.” She replied softly, playing with her fingers, “Not yet, no.” She shook her head and sat back, “I would take this to the grave if I was him to be honest. But Kian’s a good guy, and this whole thing is a serious situation.” Grant it, Armi’s mind played this whole thing a little differently. It was crazy the way trauma could change someone brain chemistry. “They do….” She agreed, “but you don’t know his family. Self defense of not, they will ask for the book to be thrown at him. And well… money talks.” That really was her fear here. Sean’s family. She bit her lip and shifted, “Someone’s stalking you?”
