I cannot decide if the king has the lipstick figured out or not... So anxious for next week.
Sejak episode 14
He really went "guys, I think we should stop the king from interrogating people. I mean, think about the poor spy when he's caught 🥺" and they all just accepted this as a normal, not at all suspicious thing to say
The poison was on the yongpo!!! How very Count of Monte Cristo!
HE GETS CREEPIER FOR EVERY EPISODE AND I LOVE IT. Please let Lee Gyu-hoe play the villain in every sageuk from now on, he's so incredibly persuasive at this brand of delulu evil!! I love the long ass Rasputin beard fluttering after him whenever he storms off feeling that he has been Humiliated and must Seek Revenge
I'm so happy that this new and improved Mong-woo can read between the lines 🥰
But if she is gonna be as ride or die for Yi In as she claims, I think a good first step would be to tell him about this plot that she personally set in motion and is still ongoing behind his back, idk.
The devil works hard but the torture gnomes work harder!
Lol honestly very relatable that he forgot Master Chu's face. Finally some representation for the prosopagnosia community!
When I tell you I had goosebumps throughout this entire exchange. They are both such marvelous actors. Also wanna give a shoutout to the sound designer! The musical score has probably been great all along, but this was the first episode I watched with headphones on and my god
It's so funny to me that he seems to be genuinely impressed and delighted by how evil Minister Park is. He's like "I can only hope to be as evil as you one day daegam 😍 I served the others for personal gain, but you... I'm serving for love"
Very ooc for Myung-ha to even consider this cursed alliance. Like didn't you learn anything from trying to plot with other people?? Just do your own thing man! Get creative!!
Another terrific actor. I love her polished, arrogant diction that is so entirely at odds with the haunted look in her eyes.
My darling Dong!! If no one will protect you I will!!!
Sorry writernim for thinking there would be catty jealousy drama... I should never have doubted you. (Very amusing though when she stomps her little foot on Mong-woo's proffered handkerchief and Mong-woo looks shocked that her gentleman rizz has failed, lmaooo)
LIPSTICK POISON!!! Even better than the robe! But as always with this trope I wonder: how on earth can it kill the person being kissed and not the person wearing it? I assume this is a different poison from the one she used on the former king, since that was clearly more slow-working than this could be supposed to be... and simultaneously strong enough to seep through several layers of fabric which would reasonably then also cross through the protective barrier of Dong sanggung's plump and lovely lips. Much to think about.
There's manspreading and then there's this
I'll be honest I did experience a few bisexual emotions while watching this scene. I assume he's got her all figured out here and will shove her away with his virtue intact in the first seconds of ep 15, but the sexual tension between him and the Toxic Lipstick is pretty intense lol. I feel like he considered going for it, just for like 2 seconds. Not a bad way to go after all.
Also, remember what I said about the sound design because it really goes extremely hard in this scene!! Those ominous strings! A most excellent episode!
#every word of this review was an unmitigated delight#manspreading 😂#i would totally want to throw lady Dong a pity fuck if she wasnt trying to murder him#sejak: charmed deceit#captivating the king#spoilers#justice for Court Lady Dong!

Carolyn Bryant- Donham: Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!
Mainstream Media was quick to announce the death of Carolyn Bryant @ 88Yrs Old, but many kept their storylines short & sweet. Another Day in The Life, under the Biden Administration. Bryant reportedly died in hospice care in Westlake, Louisiana. Details were not given by the Coroner of cause of Death, but Bryant's battle w/ Cancer was not exactly a secret. New Black Media has reported in recent Yrs on how she was initially in Raleigh- Durham, North Carolina, before being moved to Kentucky, & later Louisiana.
Back in June 2022, members of Emmett Till's family discovered an Arrest Warrant issued for 'Mrs Roy Bryant', among Records @ the Lefore County Courthouse in Mississippi. The warrant was issued back in 1955, citing the charge of Kidnapping; but it was never served. The Till Family attempted to reissue that warrant, citing Carolyn Bryant's [recent] admission of perjury in the Trial of Emmett Till's brutal murder. In her 2017 interview w/ Dr. Timothy Tyson, Bryant allegedly admitted to lying on The Stand.
Unfortunately, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch didn't think the case presented any new evidence, & in Aug. 2022, The Grand Jury declined to indict Bryant. As recently as Feb. 7th 2023, Emmett Till's cousin, Priscilla Sterling tried to compel Lefore County Sheriff Ricky Banks to reissue the warrant on Carolyn Bryant; but as of April 13th, she was informed that there was 'no point' in reissuing the warrant, since the Grand Jury declined last August.
Some lament missing the opportunity to send Carolyn Bryant- Donham to Prison. She lived a full life, while Emmett's life was brutally ended before it truly began. Bryant lived in anonymity for decades, until The New Black Panther Party & other Activists began showing up @ her addresses in North Carolina & Kentucky- to issue an 'Unofficial Warrant for her Arrest'. Some complained that Blackfolk were terrorizing an 'Old Lady', but no one says anything, when Nazi Hunters take individuals in their Nineties to justice.
The whole Emmett Till 'Tragedy' revolves around the Culture of protecting a White Woman's 'Honor'- whether she's worthy or not. Emmett Till & Carolyn Bryant are the only ones who know what really happened on Aug. 24th, 1955. According to Emmett's cousins, he was in the Store for a minute before they entered; they didn't know if he knew how to 'act' around a White Woman. From what they saw, Emmett didn't say or do anything threatening; they admit to hearing him whistle @ her. Carolyn Bryant initially concurred, but in Court, she recounted a different story.
In her Court Testimony, Bryant recounted how (14Yr Old) Emmett "put his left hand on my waist, and he put his other hand on the other side." When she rebuffed him, he replied: "What's the matter baby? Can't you take it?" She went on to say that Emmett uttered obscenities that she refused to repeat in Court, but related to his sexual prowess w/ White Women. According to Press Reports, Bryant gave the [unmistakable] impression of being afraid that Emmett might rape her. The Jury took about an hour to deliberate; the Foreman said that it would've been shorter, but they decided on having a [Soda] Pop.
In his 2017 interview, Dr. Tyson says that Carolyn Bryant- Donham told him that her testimony about Emmett grabbing her & uttering obscenities was 'not true'. Unfortunately, his recording of that interview was not enough to change the Grand Jury's opinion about reissuing the 1955 Arrest Warrant. For the most part, The State of Mississippi & The Federal Government were more concerned about the welfare of Carolyn Bryant, than the Family of Emmett Till. The Press described her as a former Beauty Queen that was raised in Poverty, w/ little Education or 'Knowledge of The World'... She was a product of her environment.
Following her death, Dr. Tyson wrote that 'Carolyn Bryant's precise role in the murder of Emmett Till remains murky, but it's clear that she was involved.' It appears that Bryant was in the car when her husband abducted Emmett; she pointed him out. By the time they reached the Store to drop her off, Dr. Tyson says that Bryant may have learned Emmett's fate, & was now saying that he wasn't the boy. In her interview, Bryant says that Emmett didn't do anything that warranted what was done to him. It appears that Emmett's Big Crime, was putting money in Carolyn Bryant's hand, & not on the counter.
Dr. Tyson speaks on how American Society views the Emmett Till Lynching as a story of 'Monsters', including Bryant. Professor Black Truth often speaks about how [White] Society operates on Moral Relativity & Situational Ethics. Applying them here, we can easily see how Dr. Tyson concludes that Society finds it easier to condemn Carolyn Bryant- Donham's actions, than confronting what America is. It's a big reason why both Democrats & Republicans have problems w/ Critical Race Theory (CRT).
For all of the aid & comfort that The State of Mississippi provided Carolyn Bryant- Donham, I can't stop thinking about Emmett... What was that 14Yr Old boy thinking when those grown White Men took him out of his family's house? Took him to that barn where they beat him mercilessly, shot him in the head, tied him to a 70lb Cotton Gin Wheel, & dumped his body into the river... As bad as that Jet Magazine Cover of Emmett's face looked, I can't get past the sheer TERROR he must have felt being alone, in the presence of Pure Evil.
I personally hope that Carolyn Bryant- Donham gets the Full Tour of 'Dante's Hell'... I'll even cover the tribute to Cerberus.

hi. im finally here to rant about something unrelated to flight rising at all whatsoever.
i actually do have fan dragons of the bitches im abt to talk about though
original sin.............. 2018......................... the cdrama...........
the following is going to be pure and utter delusion as the actual show itself is a little ass, again was made in 2018, and was directed by a 54 yr old man that unironically believed early 20 yr olds of 2018 were wearing victorian deathly ill childrens pajamas to bed with fringes.
actual cws: OS is a crime show and handles pretty intense cases. primary stuff i can think of off the top of my head is SA/CSA, child neglect, serial killer who targeted young girls/women. and. i think that is it. asides from like mild gore bt im not posting screenshots of the show thts showing tht LMFAO. I wont be going into INTENSE detail abt these things but some of it is unfortunately plot relevant
so these are my babygirls
Chi Zhen (Left) & Lu Li (Right)
brief summary of Original Sin before i get down to it: Chi Zhen was a previous lawyer that did shady shit in court in order to bring justice to his clients when the judicial system wouldnt do it, it pisses off Lu Li (cop bitch) mostly bc he jst doesnt know the context of chi zhen pulling all of tht shit and lu li is like i will put you in jail. Bitch. they literally get into a fist fight after court once iirc bc lu li has ~~~anger issues~~~ (its a watered down version of what anger issues actually are and is only used so he can beat up chi zhen. and also “bad cop” trope. he has knocked the shit out of a suspect before)
anyways chi zhen eventually Does get arrested bc he gets caught helping one of his clients get rid of her husbands body, whom she had killed out of, iirc, self defense bc she was being abused, but the court was siding with the husband as he was u kno, dead. im pretty sure thats the part where lu li gives chi zhen a black eye. etc. but yeah chi zhen goes to jail for three years
after that hes tasked with taking care of a night club (that they VERY desperately wanted to be a strip club but im 100% sure censors said no), a cafe, and some other fucking building?? i dont even remember bc they never showed it but anyways one of the ladies at the night club is killed (not at the club) and turns out whoops! lu li is the head investigator of the case. and chi zhen gets dragged into it bc the guy hes watching these businesses for threatens to tell Mr. Chen who is Chi Zhens Boss Guy From Jail. (mr chen is like..... LITERALLY WE DONT EVEN KNO WE’RE NEVER GIVEN CONTEXT AS TO WHO HE IS AND WHY HE HAS SO MUCH POWER. obviously hes rich but hesj ust given No background. #@%$^&)
one thing leads to another, Dong Lingqi/Chief Dong basically blackmails chi zhen into becoming an officer to be partnered up with Lu Li bc wht do u kno they work well together and end up solving the case of one of his workers deaths within like. three days. chief dong is another we-dont-know-why-he-has-power guy. and Yes hes literally the damn. chief police guy, but its implied he had power before he even went into the police force frm Mr. Chen, and goes by the name Pixiu, BUT WE DONT KNOW WHYYYYY
anwyays so the whole show is chilu bonding (we dont see it on screen as they devote too much time to the side story case plots), them beating each other up, etc but oh fuck plot twist! and honest to god i actually like this twist bc generally i fucking hate cop shows but this one was so interesting: Lu Ziming, Lu Li’s dad, killed Chi Zhen’s older sister. And only Chi Zhen is aware of this for a long time in the show, and Chief Dong tries to use this as a motivator for chi zhen to fucking murk lu li in order to avenge his sister. chief dong has a tendency to kill his cops.
i genuinely. cant properly summarize this show like theres a LOT im leaving out there but i want to talk abt my genuine delusion rewrite that dissects every damn aspect of this show and emphasizes it.
1. women are not given enough screentime. oh my god women arent given enough screentime.
Chi Wen, Chi Zhen’s older sister, literally was the domino that lead to Everything that happened in original sin but All we know about her is that she was a piano prodigy (Lu Ziming was her piano teacher) & that she had a boyfriend. that is it. i wouldve REALLY liked to see her dynamic with her family, as she came across as very loving in the few scenes we had, and iirc she couldnt do the whole um. there was a thing that was out of country re piano shit but i believe for family reasons she couldnt leave the country. but. She was their mothers favorite child. and its so blatantly obvious. theres NO proper discussion of it because it leans heavy into Chi Zhen still caring for his mother bc shes family, despite her Literally not giving a singular fuck about him. like he’ll try to speak and she’ll start going on about Chi Wen even tho its been. what. two decades
i wouldnt have a problem with that specifically but asides from a singular meltdown that chi zhen has while drunk, i dont think chi wen’s impact is discussed enough whatsoever.
Also i wouldve liked a ghost girl angle bc i am just so obsessed with Girl Who Has Made Her Situation Everyones Problem bc she deserves that and i think it would fuck with chi zhen mentally and i am only here to make him worse. also in my rewrite, she has parallels with lu lis daughter Yinuo.
i have Very specific thoughts about like. how she interacted with her family, her friends, and how as a ghost it wld specifically taunt chi zhen. ofc she doesnt mean to taunt but chi zhen is so fucked brain wise that it manifests into that. (i could go on about chi zhens neglect during childhood for hours because its so prevalent in the show but again its never explored deeply, and its surprising bc chi zhen has a lot more development than lu li does)
like. this goes for all of the mental illness/trauma responses in the show. but all of it is SUPER surface level and it just drives me fucking insane.
the next woman who should have had disproportionately more screen time than she got is Wu Wenxuan, aka Lu Li’s ex wife.
Wu Wenxuan’s case is another pivotal plot point that becomes relevant in the end of the show, but gist of it (and CW for SA/Murder), she was orphaned really young and adopted by a couple who previously werent able to conceive their own kid. they end up conceiving their own kid and begin to neglect her. SA occurs. she kills her entire family while in nursing school and manages to get away with it because she copies everything that a serial killer at the time had been doing.
Lu Li was the head investigator of this case as well. and its just. THEIR STORY IS SO DAMN SUS AND IT MAKES ME SOOOO ANGRYYYYYYYY
within three months of the case getting closed. THEY GET MARRIED. AND WWX IS ALREADY KNOCKED UP. ?????? and only ONE person from the PD is suspicious of it. ONE. and honestly its not even THAT part that gets me angry its the fact they got MARRIED within three months AND DIVORCE A YEAR LATER??#!$%$@^?%#^ the director did lu li SO fucking dirty its insane but also i hate het couples that move on that quickly like are you fucking insane. are you insane. ive been with my boyfriend Two Years and marriage is Nowhere that close in our brains.
anwyays so like wu wenxuan is just. a tool for lu lis man pain. for some reason wwx has Full custody of their daughter Yinuo even though theres no logical reason why lu li shouldnt have at least visitation (which. he doesnt), bc i know damn well lu li wouldve fought w everything in him to get at least partial custody of yinuo. so theres just weird fucking scenes of him agonizing over losing his wife and kid. also wu wenxuan remarries not even a year after getting divorced. i fucking hate this director so bad.
BT JST. wu wenxuan was There when cz and ll were first starting to interact. she was there when lu li was partnered with chu dao (lu lis ex cop partner that was fucking murked (it is rumored that lu li killed him) (lu li did not kill him)). Why does she only have ONE fucking conversation with chi zhen and thats ONLY when her case re her family is starting to come back up. you’re genuinely telling me chi zhen doesnt try to get information about lu li out of her at Any point.
that convo they had was ass anyways bc somehow lu li just Knew chi zhen was there and they had that cis man intimidation thing where they stand and stare at each other while making passive aggressive comments idk i dont remember the scene pissed me off.
but anywyas i jst wished we couldve seen more on her side of things? honest to god it doesnt even make sense why her and lu li got together bc theres no way like. she doesnt know about lu lis dad. who was a serial killer and rapist. i just really think that would hit too close and i think she would want to Avoid Anything even REMOTELY like that? like i love the wwx/ll in my brain but canon wwx/ll is so fucking confusing i hate it so much
she jst shouldve had more participation in the overall plot instead of just being Lu Li’s Man Angst, like i want to see who she is outside of all this shit too?? from wht we can tell she’s a good mom, she went into nursing, and ALLL tht like....... give me who she is away from lu li and away frm her past. Please.
the THIRD woman who shouldve had more screen time is sophie and she ALSO upsets me bc shes another character thats solely there to be a love interest for one of the men.
shes like. 100% a character they only made so censorship wouldnt snipe them for the main two guys. im sorry. its so blatantly obvious it makes me so fucking mad. and i LOVE HER!!!!!!! SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHES LITERALLY MY FAVORITE CHARACTER NEXT TO CHILU!!!!!
All we know about sophie is that she had Just started working at the club when Lily, the worker of Chi Zhen’s that got murdered, had been killed. she shared an apartment with lily, and remained relevant Only really for that case. she would pop up every now and then but only as Chi Zhen needed her for other cases. nothing else. we’re even shown that chilu text each other significantly more than chi zhen even talks to sophie. #@%$^&
sophie does get re-employed at the cafe after chi zhen loses his job at the night club, but like. she doesnt come back fully until the last case, which concerns wu wenxuan. and it is LITERALLY just so she can ogle chi zhen and very suddenly ~want a family~. WE WERE NEVER GIVEN THT CHARACTERIZATION FOR HER BEFORE! like they literally tried to “pretend” to be a couple but u kno how tht goes sophie got too caught up in it.
and there IS like a scene of sophie and chi zhen getting drunk together but 1. thats when he has his drunk spiel about how lonely he is and how hehas no one to rely on. 2. he calls sophie annoying. perhaps i was just bullied as a child but if im offering some fucking man emotional support and he calls me annoying as a joke i would have kicked his ass out of my apartment. im like PRETTY sure it was sophies alcohol they were drinking too like get the fuck out. Asshole. SHE WAS EVEN LIKE. SHOCKED WHEN HE SAID THT TOO AND NOT IN A PLAYFUL WAY? LIKE SHE RLLY THOUGHT SHE WAS BEING REJECTED. but then he kisses her. bro i would have killed myself in front of him and changed his life before his eyes.
anyways yeah sophie was just a sidekick/love interest for chi zhen and it makes me mad bc while im not against them as a pairing At all its just that the director hd no actual investment in her. she was literally only made to cover up the bromance shit for the main guys.
what i WOULDVE liked to see is her maybe doing the club/cafe shit part time while she went to college full time? chi zhen was a lawyer. make her someone who admired his work before x and x happened, make her have her major concern law, have scenes where chi zhen is lamenting about the new case and how they’re stuck on something, and sophie gives him a new angle to look at. those two GENUINELY have a really good dynamic when sophie isnt suddenly Wannabe Mother and i was expecting her to be a lot more involved throughout the Entirety of the series, not jst the first and last cases....... Please.
i have more thots on her specifically but its more connected to um. sochilu. polycule
another character who shouldve gotten more is Wen Maoling simply because i think she is very lovely and she showed us that chi zhen is into dominate women and i think thats funny. i dont have too many thoughts for her unfortunately but shes involved in the evidence department of the PD and i was hoping She would also have more screentime because of such but alas.
last lady character: Yinuo. my little baby yinuo.
she is wu wenxuans & Lu Lis daughter and she was written so damn poorly even though shes QUITE LITERALLY 4 because the director just has?? no fucking idea how children work???? LIKE ANY TIME A CHILD WAS ON SCREEN IT WAS JUST BAD. but anyways i mentioned prior that i wouldve liked parallels between her and Chi Wen, moreso in how they act
i think yinuo would lean more on the assertive side just because of who her parents are, so i think she’d b a bossy lil kid, but at the same time Because Of Who Her Parents Are i think she’d be very kind. also bc of chi zhen. HER AND CHI ZHEN SHOULDVE HAD SOOOO MUCH MORE INTERACTION IT DRIVES ME INSANE. chi zhen literally just Heard that lu li had a kid and he bought her one of those big ass expensive doll houses. Immediately. like he hadnt even seen a picture of her yet he jst knew lu li had a daughter.
bt for my rewrite he’s really doting on kids and in turn doting on yinuo and hes u kno uncle chi bt ithink tht could turn into reminding him of Chi Wen. “but chi wen was older than him” listen. it would be like assuming cws role. you know. not in that yinuo reminds him of himself, but in that he’s doing the little tricks that cw used to soothe him for yinuo, hes spoiling her like cw spoiled him, etc etc.. i dont think he would want kids of his own, but he very much spoils every kid he meets Because of chi wen, and because he doesnt want kids to go through what he did. like. if lu li tries to put yinuo down chi zhen would immediately pick her back up. “shes almost 5 u dont need to be carrying her all of the time “ well little baby kids need affection........ ok ......................
i also jst think tht yinuo being freakishly smart would be a funny little thing to do. i like 2 think that lu lis mom used to be a music teacher as well, so yinuo is learning the flute, and shes REALLY good at it, but also she’s looked over cases (that lu li lets her look at) for HOURS at a time with her dad bc he has a lil office w all his docs in my rewrite so even SHE can give little tidbits of something that might be happening when lu li is agonizing over a case. of course, shes still a child, its not going to be right 90% of the time, but its still a new perspective that can be worth looking at for more minor cases.
in my rewrite shes actually around like 7 so shes a lil older than canon but idk i love characters who have little daughters........ especially when they can be little rambunctious daughters........
and in ref to my rewrite i make lu li and wu wenxuan have 50/50 custody bc it jst. does NOT make sense to me why lu li doesnt have Any custody in canon. she’ll stay w one parent one week, the other parent the next, etc.. She also has the master bedroom in lu lis apartment and its filled to the brim w 90% of her toys. (lu li has the other two bedrooms, his personal room then an office, the bathroom connects the two rooms which is why he took those).
god. ok. i think thats everything concerning my ladies. i Think.
now onto the most. insufferable sopping wet men who are the stars of this show.
this is not in the show the actors for these two just REALLY liked kissing each other during the promo/premier whatever it was (but also chi zhen DOES fake lu li out of a kiss? and it was the one scene out of the entire show that lu li thinks back on when he thinks chi zhen is fucking dead. ?!?@$?%#^$)
anyways ive mentioned before right. Chi Zhen is a lawyer. Lu Li is a cop. i hate the latter fact so in my rewrite. ive changed it up.
Ive changed a lot ofthings up
this is just a timeline for what happens Pre OS. and i dont even have everything down. like this is still bare bones to me timeline wise. Right.
but anyways, chi zhen remains a lawyer throughout the rewrite, but its not his primary job. He still very much takes care of the club and cafe, and takes on more minor cases that Mr. Chen specifically requests that he picks up, and said cases are usually so that Mr. Chen can get his own men out of trouble.
Lu Li becomes a Private Investigator after his mentor (Chief Zhang) and previous partner (Chu Dao) are murdered, especially when their deaths are brushed off as Chief Dong gets promoted to Chief. theres plenty of other instances where he believe proper justice wasnt served that pushes him to separate himself from the PD, but he does still work with a Select Few people in order to find evidence for his cases. Wen Maoling and Eggwaffle namely (ignore his nickname) are two he stays in contact with along with the coroner i cant remember his name right now.
Lu Li is. very borderline obsessed with chi zhen in the rewrite. again chi zhen was notorious for pulling loopholes and very unconventional means of winning his cases, and it was always rumored he was doing dirty work to win his cases. So Lu Li already had an eye on him before he even went to jail. This shit is magnified the second chi zhen is reinstated as a lawyer. and u might be like. how the fuck did chi zhen come back as a lawyer if he was caught hiding a fucking body.
Well. Again, he is connected to Mr. Chen in jail, and in some way, Mr. Chen is connected to Pixiu, aka Chief Dong. In the rewrite, CZ doesnt serve the full three years of jailtime, because evidence of CZ being “framed” comes up. aka they forged evidence in order to get him out and to make him their personal lawyer. so CZ does manage to get out, and hes compensated for his time in prison, but Lu Li is still very suspicious of everything, especially what they claim to be evidence. CZ himself is even alarmed that it was even pulled off at All bc he wouldnt have tried that shit himself at All.
but again. Mr. Chen and Chief Dong have connections throughout the PD, and in turn im sure that would lead into connections with certain judges.
in this ive made Mr. Chen more of a broker of sorts, but hes still involved with a lot of crime. He doesn’t generally touch murder, but he does do “loans”, drug related shit, etc. etc. and Pixiu Came from that kind of business. Pixiu specifically though was raised rich and he fully intends to remain rich while maintaining power over the legal system where he can. But! Mr. Chen being a broker/loan shark is actually how I have Chi Zhen’s father AND Lu Ziming involved with Mr. Chen. Now.
Chi Zhen wasn’t aware that his father had been involved with this sort of shit. In Canon, his father literally dips the second CZs mom gets Mystery Illness, but in my rewrite he is murdered by Lu Ziming-- something that chi zhen isnt aware of for a good while, but he does know that his father was murdered. As far as he knew, his father was a laborer that ended up in the wrong spot at the wrong time, not someone who was trying to get SOMEONE (lu ziming) to pay their debts.
Lu ziming specifically was taking these loans Mostly for his own studio right, but also to help him cover up the fact he was, you know, a fucking serial killer. He got his own family set up with the money he got from Mr. Chen’s people, but he wasnt making enough back quickly in order to pay Mr. Chen off. which is how chi zhens dad gets involved in trying to get the debt paid.
But. czs dad finds lzm as lzm as literally murking one of his victims. and what do u kno. lzm manages to kill czs dad (who ive named Chi Yin. Actually). in order to get mr chen off of his ass, lzm specifically delivers cy’s body To mr chens base at the time as a sort of threat.
Chi Yin in this like.......... he was close friends with mr chen, and he was responsible for a lot of financial shit. He kept track of everything in relation to that, so this was VERY much a hard hit for mr chen. SURPRISINGLY though this isnt why Mr Chen chooses Chi Zhen specifically when he ends up in jail-- he didnt even realize Chi Yin had kids until Chief Dong Kindly fills him in on the situation. and of course. he used that as a way to pin Lu Li under more eyes.
LZM isnt exactly touchable. he Is in jail, but because of who he is, what hes done, and how others in jail might react to him, hes kept in a highly secured section of the prison by himself. And he still cares about his son, even though in my vers Lu Li specifically disowns him! so Lu Li is the target most are trying to go for if they want revenge of Any sort. which Mr Chen And Chi Zhen want.
On top of this, Chief Dong specifically wants Lu Li dead because he was behind the murders of Chief Zhang and Chu Dao, and Lu Li is getting REALLY close to figuring this out as of the start of the rewrite, so hes doing everything in his power to get this mf killed. Mr Chen also helped with the murders of Chief Zhang and Chu dao, so its just another reason for him to get rid of Lu Li, because his whole operation could be flipped if Lu Li decided to release Anything.
So. the rewrite rlly focuses on them using each other, them using chi zhen and wu wenxuan, etc etc against lu li, all the while lu li is solving more and more shit and finding out more and more information. It also devotes more focus to the characters themselves instead of the sidecases becoming a main focus like in theshow bc it jst. @$#%$ PISSED ME OFF! A lot of development ended up shafted because of how much they focused on the cases, esp in relation to how Chi Zhen and Lu Li bond and how things behind closed doors develop.
but yeah i just make them a lot worse. like they kind of hate each other and beat each other up in the show but i make them obsessed with each other and they Still beat each other up but its got more sexual tension LOL. i do still make them bond, its a prime enemies to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers to Fucking Dead sort of deal but. etcccc
and ive mentioned it several times. Chi zhen does “die” but also no he doesnt. i dont think it was an intentional fake death, but chi zhen gets gut stabbed by some guy who had harassed sophie (and he had defended sophie from the guy) and disappears for a good year before coming back. Season two WAS supposed to go over this comeback as the ending of the show literally shows us him coming back as a cliff hanger but then um chi zhens actor got into some shit and well s2 is not coming. which is honestly where im stumped in my rewrite but at the same time theres still a LOT of stuff to develop just with the first season. You know.
like a big thing that im trying to get details nailed into is some of the symbolism. In the first episode of the show, Mr Chen is introduced while fishing. and i love me some fucking fish symbolism. but as he’s talking to chi zhen he makes an example out of the fish for if Chi Zhen doesnt get the case concerning lily solved: he cuts off the head of the fish. And it wasnt a clean cut, which is something i think was supposed to be emphasized-- he wasnt going to let chi zhen out peacefully if he let the case went cold, he would make sure chi zhen suffered if he didnt get them out of the water.
so the angle im taking rn is that Chi Zhen is bait. CZ in the show dresses as flamboyantly as they could (i dont think the costuming had ever seen a gay man but that was the prompt they were given by the director and by god they tried their best), and while the colors lean towards the dark side, theyre still a lot more colorful than Lu Li’s wardrobe. Granted! In my rewrite i make him a lot sluttier and brighter, so he fits the Bait title more appearance wise. But again, he is bait, and he is bait for Lu Li, the fish in this situation
but Chi Zhen is lead to believe that he is the fisherman. he believes hes using other people as bait in order to catch and corner lu li, and Mr Chen takes every advantage of that that he feasibly can until Chi Zhen is shown the harsh reality that hesthe one being used. but again. Mr Chen and Chief Dong are the fishermen in this case. They are not. Wu Wenxuan is also another form of bait in the rewrite, but shes more aware of her position in the chain, and it leads to u kno more complications bc she can steer the situation how She wants to better.
bc of this angle ive been basing their clothes off of different styles of bait and different fish. in the ideal world i finally breakdown and make this shit into a comic of sorts, their color palettes would be following such. but again this is still heavy development bc im intending to put Research into the fish and baits that i use as reference LMFAO.
another thing that follows this and smth ive mentioned is Chi Wen as a ghost that is haunting Chi Zhen. i just like psychological horror. Her appearing as hallucinations to freak him out, guide him, etc. is smth iwant to write in rlly bad bc it could also just key the audience more into what had happened when she was killed, instead of the direct information dump they sort of did when it came to her case. mysterious ghost girls is my favorite thing.
Also in relation to her, I have chi zhen wear one of those little necklaces u kno the one tht has matching halves. He had one that matched his sister, and Chi Wen is still wearing said necklace. in the rewrite when he becomes like.... consoled re his sisters death, he gives his necklace to yinuo as a little gift. U kno. but thts like late story for it.
in general tho colors also wld have a rlly big significance bt again i think tht wld be more obvious when it comes to like..... a comic version of this rewrite. i rlly dont think ill go thru w a full thing but if i do write it i Do want to make some pages to implement w the writing bc some things r just visual u kno.......
but. i think that is The Most General take on my rewrite for original sin that I can offer. ifanyone actually read all of this i will kiss you on the mouth. also if you’d like to inquiry specific parts (ex sochilu and how their relationship works in the rewrite, stuff about yinuo, who mr chen and chief dong are, who chilus parents are, etcccc) u can send a milk emote w the character name/question to @mingjue and i will give. an equally long fucking rant about it. im genuinely so obsessed w this damn rewrite i Will get it written one day i mean it so bad.
these men haunt me
#Asks#Anonymous#if anyone reads this fully im so fucking sorry its so much#also no i dont recc this show i literally only made it through bc im irrationally in love with y n zh ng (lu lis actor)#and then you know i autism rewrote it. But#trigger tags ->#CSA Mention#SA Mention#Child Neglect Mention#if this needs any other tags lmk

Episode 3 --Curiosity kills the cat. Ga On roams around the quiet mansion that belongs to Kang Yohan and is shocked to learn about his dark past.
Ga On gets treated by Yohan, Yohan’s own case gets investigated.
Kim Ga On saved Kang Yo Han from a bombing incident. In return, Kang Yo Han took good care of him. He also let the young judge stay in his house for days to get treated before going back to the court.
Meanwhile, after the unexpected incident in his office, there’s an ongoing investigation taking place and the news are reporting about the shocking bomb going off in a judge’s office goes live on tv. Since the incident, Yohan goes out of the building and reports back to the journalists and reporters that he’s doing alright, also says thanks for the public’s concern. While the investigation is ongoing, Yohan reported that the culprit hasnt been concluded yet and there’s a possibility that its from the other side of the court who became upset with the live show. He promises the public that the live show will still go on despite the cowardly terror act done to him. As he met Sun A at the President’s hallway he describes the incident as something not that grand enough to kill someone but it couldnt be ignored either. It was meant as a warning. Sun A mentions that Yohan has figured it out very quickly.
After facing the press, Soohyun visited Yohan and asks how Gaon is and where he is. Yohan does not disclose his location with a reasonable answer as there could be another attack. Yohan reminds Soohyun as a cop to catch the culprit and to give her his trust to treat Gaon.
While Ga On was personally being treated by Yohan, Yohan sees a old tattoo on his back. Yohan ask what it is and Ga On defended himself mentioning that it was a immature act. He continues to point out that Yohan is an old fart and judges people without really knowing them. While Ga On is in recovery mode, Yohan brings in a substitute judge named Judge Jung Inseok.
Lieutenant Soohyun continuously checks the CCTV. One of her colleagues makes a comment assuming that its not someone from the outside but from the inside. The colleague then thinks that maybe one of the judges has a grudge against him because he’s doing too well. As the day passes, Yohan visits the same man they investigated. He was the person who placed the bomb inside his office. He confessed that someone from the foundation wants it done. Soohyun also gets a call from Ga On. She also finds out that Ga On is resting at Yohan’s place and she gets surprised.
SRF creates Dream Home project for the poor
CSR Foundation’s Chairman makes a huge announcement on the billboard screens of South Korea. Its a Dream Home project that involves free health care and free housing for the poor. He also pleads people for help to make this dream become a reality. All players of this project will hugely benefit from this: The president’s ratings will rise, Chairman Seo doing this for the sake of the greater good, also the Chairmans of People Media Group and Minbo Group’s foreign investments will become alot better.
Yo Han puts Lee Young Min in court
Minister Cha Kyung Hee (Jang Young Nam) was surprised when Kang Yo Han announced who his next defendant would be in the next trial. It was her one and only son, Lee Young Min (Moon Dong Hyeok).
If he places the Minister of Justice’s son on trial, he didn’t care as everyone is equal before the law. To Yohan, everyone is only a defendant. That makes Cha furious. He then makes a final statement and compares them to a dog. Cha also makes sure that there would be no trial. She barges in the President’s office and sees Yohan there talking with him. Yohan tells her that they should separate personal and work feelings. As Yohan put it being the case should not be ignored, the President talks about the case to Cha and SunA. He says that there’s a petition with the topic of finding out who’s behind the attack against Judge Kang. A million has signed it and if they mess with Yohan, they mess with the people. Cha gives her statement that she will take care of it as she understands why the government cannot interfere.
We’re also informed that Youngmin has a anger management issue. He also had a case with a restaurant by attacking the staffs due to his car parking.
Youngmin’s trial
The trial starts and Judge Yohan informs the audience that Ga On is in recovery and warns them that someone is stopping them with this trial and it’s only the public who has the right to do so. The trial’s subject is introduced: The defendant has committed verbal and physical assault against 3 people: server, chef and a part time staff. There’s staff members who has settled but there’s 1 who hasn’t and Yohan has pointed that out to the prosecutor. The witness is revealed as Kim Sunghoon. Sunghoon came to the stand and confessed that he doesnt want the defendant to be punished. He also looks apprehensive saying his statement.
Yohan commented that he made a petition many times to the court to severely punish the defendant. So why did he change his mind now? He says that he wanted to end it all. Flashback of the owner informing him that the building where the restaurant is located is being sold. The building has been sold to a company. Could it be Youngmin’s company? They’re also going to tear it down and the lot would be left empty. Then once their contract is up theyll leave. Witness also added that he didnt get severely injured so he just let it slide. The prosecutors decided to force withdrawal to all charges, which made Ga On pissed (especially after the car incident he saw previously). Lee also asked permission from Judge Yohan if he could speak, he bowed and apologized (insincerely) to the witness which made the crowd uproar. Ga On knows its fake especially after that car accident he saw of him driving madly. The same kind of insincere bow was made. Judge Yohan observes that something is off. He then pointed out on cases where the same crime has been constantly repeated. Yohan asked the prosecutor how many times did the defendant assaulted someone and settled. Judge Oh mentioned that he did it 12 times in total.
Yohan asked the audience if Lee’s face seemed familiar and the crew production zoomed in on his face. Yohan added that the audience can send a video to the court (someone can send in a evidence for the case). Then the poor man from the last ep that got assaulted by Lee is shown watching the live court show on a tv while working. A videocall comes in and its a woman who works as parttime at a department store parking lot. She tells a story of how he kept complaining about congestion and kicked an attendant. The store she works at tells her to let it go because he’s a VVIP costumer. Then another videocall comes in. A restaurant staff mentions that he’s a regular at their place. He complaints how Lee beats someone everytime he visits. More videocalls come in from different witnesses. Ga On watching from the mansion thinks if this is the reason why he wants the court to be a live show. For more witnesses.
The case is resulted to habitual assault. The trial will also continue and the first witness’ case will also be put onto trial.
Ga On gets curious about Yo Han's life
Days after the incident, Ga On started to recover from the wounds. He starts to get bored staying all day in Kang Yo Han's room and roamed around the big mansion.
He got curious about the locked door in the middle of the hallway. He was determined to open, then the nanny opened it without knowing that he’s sneaking at the corner.
The lady entered the room but forgot to close the wooden door, Kim Ga On was quick to sneak in and became more puzzled by what he saw.
The nanny was talking to a portrait in front of her and kept mentioning about the man named Isaac. According to her, Isaac was the real owner of the mansion and not Yohan. This gave Ga On more hints about Kang Yo Han's real identity.
Then, Ga On trespassed one of the rooms inside the mansion after the live court and accidentally found Yo Han's old room, located in the basement. He found a photo of a man who resembles him. Suddenly, the nanny got inside and mentioned about Kang Yo Han's past life.
Ga On was shocked about the revelation that Yohan was adopted and abused by Isaac's father. Yohan also lived at the mansion’s basement. He is a abandoned child. The nanny also mentioned how Ga On resembles Isaac alot. Flashback of Isaac taking care of Yohan and giving him legal related books. Ga On thinks that the nanny suspects Yohan killing Isaac, which makes him become the heir. Goes to show back then that Yohan is capable of doing something terrible. The nanny gave out examples of him doing those terrible deeds. She also added that Yohan is a survivor of a fire accident and it happened 1 month after the Chairman died, Isaac also died from that incident.
With the new information he got from the nanny, Ga On became more interested about Yohan.
Whoa there, Yohan is quite a dark person isn’t he?

Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
Lin Xie –> Commander of the Chiyan Army
Lin Shu –> “Xiao-Shu” –> Lin Xie’s son –> Mei Changsu --> Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance --> Su Zhe
Lin Chen –> Young Master of Langya Hall –> NOTE: The “Lin” of Lin Chen and the “Lin” of Lin Xie & Lin Shu are both written and pronounced differently. These people are not related.

Xiao Xuan –> Emperor of Da Liang
Empress Yan --> Prince Yu’s adoptive mother

And also because my mother is terrible at faces and for like 15 episodes every time he showed up in another random place I would say “that’s horse and boat guy” and she would say “wait what? really???” So I’m assuming at least one other person will share in this struggle)

andddd july flew by, and i’m here to give everyone an unasked for report of...things...i watched / read / listened to this month because why not
kdramas:
miss hammurabi
aaaah oh my god the way i told myself that i won’t be watching any more legal kdramas because your honor stressed me out so much--but god. i wound up watching this and fell in love with it so fast? miss hammurabi is about a rookie judge (the gal on the right) disrupting the judicial system with her strong sense of justice. i really wasn’t too sure if i’d like her, but oh god. i fell in love with her so fast, with her desire to make the world a better place and her ability to smile even though she’s had a horrific life of her own.
honestly, i really just loved this show, mostly for how it covers so many issues in the courthouse, from working overtime to the emotional fatigue to the frustrations with those brought to court to the actual cases themselves, which are all civil court things (so we get some stuff about sexual harassment, child custody, medical malpractice, etc). this show really demonstrated that each of these cases were important--and also...really hard-hitting. i think i cried at least once per episode just because...yeah. i’m reminded that no one goes to the courthouse because they’re happy or because they’re having a good time, and it really is the job of judges and lawyers to keep a cool head and execute justice the best they can.
so basically: i loved this show. i loved it a lot more than i thought i would, and that’s always a good thing. there’s also not a whole ton of romance here either, if you’re looking for a show that’s not really too deep into that. it’s def. more focused on depicting the legal field, as well as all of the complications that come with that. as a result, there’s a lot of heartbreaking moments in the show, but there’s also many, many, many uplifting ones that reminded me a lot of why i personally want to enter the legal field. so if you’re looking for a show that might restore your faith in humanity, then i def. recommend this kdrama!
beyond evil
so.....it’s no secret that i’ve been mildly obsessed with this show. i binge-watched it in the span of...i think four (4) days, so that’s averaging about four episodes (4 hours) a day. let me just say...i was kind of on the fence about watching this, but now i’m really glad that i did because whooo boy, i was in for a ride. basically, this show is about lee dong sik, who was accused of murdering his sister (amongst others) 20 years ago...and han ju won, the young detective / inspector who’s trying to track down the murderer (who he believes is lee dong sik).
lots of other things happen, but that’s the least spoiler-y summary i can give of this show because....whooooo boy, there’s just so many twists and turns in this show? as soon as you start thinking you have everything figured out, this show tosses in another thing that reminds you of just how clueless you actually are. that said though, none of the twists felt out of place--they all felt very planned and very smart, so kudos to the writers for that!
overall, i hella enjoyed this show--the plot, the characters (who all want to do the right thing, but they’re all very jaded in their own ways which makes being a 100% good person basically impossible in this monster of a town), and, of course, the relationship between dong sik and ju won. there was just an absolutely fascinating push and pull between their relationship, lots of distrust and mocking each other in the beginning...only to slowly but steadily grow into trust and respect for each other (and in my head, def. something more....but lol i’ll let you guys decide on that for yourself ;))
i.....genuinely loved this show. i found this show just incredibly smartly written, and all the characters were incredibly intriguing? and the relationships were all fascinating to me? just. god. this show ripped me apart so many times, and i loved it all the more for it. like. guys. i wrote or started writing about six fics for this show in the span of 48 hours because i love it that much.
movies:
the handmaiden
ohohoho this movie has been on my to watch list for the LONGEST TIME, and i was glad that i gave myself some time to watch this movie at the start of the month, because...whoooo boy, it was so good. this movie is inspired by the book the fingersmith by sarah waters, only whereas i think the book took place in victorian england, this movie takes place in japan-occupied-korea. sook hee, a pickpocket, is hired by a conman to persuade the secluded lady hideko to marry him. the conman plans to later inherit hideko’s wealth and send hideko off to the madhouse.
many things happen over the course of this movie, and i’m not going to spoil anything, but oh boy...oh boy. i mean, this movie is pretty well-known for the main relationship between the two protagonists, sook hee and hideko. the romance was such a ride, and i thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. this movie really said “be gay, do crime” in the best way possible.
as a quick warning though, this movie definitely is erotic. i kinda knew that heading into the movie, and i was still a little caught off-guard. so maybe if you’re a little squicked out by sex/erotica in general, i’d maybe skip over this movie. that said, this movie was beautifully filmed, with beautiful writing, and the cast was just perfect. i don’t think i’ve seen a movie so beautifully or smartly crafted like this before, and i’m very glad i watched this film.
the meg
let me caveat by saying....i watched this because my brother wanted to watch it, so i sat through this movie and...y’know? it wasn’t awful. kinda predictable as far as shark movies go, but it wasn’t bad! i found myself enjoying it a little more than i thought i would...? but basically, this movie is about, you guessed it, an underwater research facility that was just looking into a deeper part of the ocean and etc. surprise, they found! a megalodon. multiple megalodons! cue the chaos.
so...there were definitely some more suspenseful moments. i shouted “these people just KEEP FALLING OFF THE BOAT” a few times. there was one character who i was like “oh man he’s gonna be the villain isn’t he :( darn :(” to “oh hey he has a heart” to “oh never mind” to “ooph”. there were some more slightly emotional moments, but?? not particularly thought-provoking or impactful. so like? overall? it was one of those movies where like....it’s not bad, it’s not really good, but! hey, not all movies need to be incredibly deep to be even somewhat enjoyable! (and like, i mostly just enjoyed watching this movie because my brother and i cracked commentary all throughout it, much to my father’s chagrin.)
music:
so, apparently my music taste changes when i’m thinking about something that’s not star wars related, and i saw a bit of that when i was making this playlist for lee dong sik and han joo won from beyond evil. as spotify works, it wound up with me adding a few of my songs that i thought fit them, and then i wound up going into the radio part of my playlist and listening to a lot of new songs, and i just have to list some of my new faves here:
let me follow by son lux: you know when you hear a song that just feels so...strangely cinematic? like, you get all kinds of vivid images in your head and stuff? this was def. one of those songs. it’s quiet, and there’s something weirdly...ephemeral about it? that’s the only way i can describe it. and mildly haunting. and mildly tragic. idk why, but i think big fans of tragedy & the patroclus/achilles kind of feel might like this song. it’s just. god. i spent 2 hours sitting in my bed just listening to this song on loop.
not in the same way by 5 seconds of summer: this is a public scolding @ 15 year old me who thought it was lame to like 5sos just because they were getting popular. boo, 15 year old caroline and her “i’m a weirdo, i’m not like other girls or other people my age” phase! because 5sos actually slaps, and this was one of my fave songs? idk. another weirdly cinematic song. the refrain is just chef’s kiss, in the kind of rambly way that leads to a shout. i love that kind of stuff.
start of time by gabrielle aplin. bro...the way gabrielle aplin’s voice brought me straight back to 2014-2016 era caroline...but weirdly, i haven’t heard this song from her before? and bro. bro....i’ve never wanted to run to the top of a hill and watch the sunrise with a loved one so bad in my whole life. god. idk. if you need a song that makes you feel like. things just might get better. this one’s for you.
sedated by hozier: okay, so i’ve only ever listened to a handful of hozier songs in my whole life (i know, i know, how can i bicon like myself not listen to hozier 24/7? le sigh), but bro.....bro. i get it now. i get why people screech about hozier. i already liked his music before, but...ah. idk. something very powerful about this song. i now understand why people want to lie down in the middle of the woods when they listen to his music.
#caroline recs#i didn't watch or read a whole ton of things because....super deep into lsat prep now#but yee here we are

Nirvana in Fire (for the hopelessly confused)™.
Or, “How to survive the first few episodes.”
Nirvana in Fire takes in medias res to a new level, then throws in an ensemble cast in the middle of political machinations to top it all off. It may be one of the best shows you’ll ever watch, but only if you can survive the beginning.
Unless you've read the novel it’s based on, the Confusion is Real. Some viewers may be reliant on subtitles in their native language and have less time to commit faces to memory. The first episodes are central, but very hard to digest. Here’s something for folks who want to give the show a shot but also want to live.
(Nothing on these graphics or in the accompanying text includes info beyond the first two episodes and the beginning of the third.)
Lin Shu (A.K.A Mei Changsu, Su Zhe): Man on a mission. One-stop-shop for all your hurt/comfort needs. Prodigy, was once a skilled fighter. “Died” in Meiling at 19 years old. Has been plotting and dealing with an as-yet unspecified illness in the 12 years since the massacre of the Chiyan army. Goal: get justice, root out corruption in the court, put his friend ▼ on the throne. Method: get invited to capital by his pal Jingrui and get cracking.
Xiao Jingyan: Very hotheaded if you know which buttons to push. (Everyone knows which buttons to push.) Traits of note: Loyalty, rock-solid moral backbone, occasional leaps before looking, eviscerating snark and a give-no-f***s attitude. Still mourning Lin Shu (and many others). Won't show up until episode 2. (Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it...) Hates strategists, which is too bad for our main character ▲, but also good for him, because while Prince Jing is busy hating him—and MCS purposely makes it easy for Prince Jing to do just that—he won’t find it easy to question his strategist’s motives and uncover his true identity.
And now for a rousing round of...
On first watch, it’s really hard to parse allegiances. Too many shifty folks Doing Secret Stuff. Below are some simple charts to demystify the first two episodes.
The charts have simple information. Consult them if you just want a quick primer. If you need more in-depth information, see the bullet-pointed lists below.
Xie Yu, father of Jingrui and husband of the Emperor’s sister Liyang, plays at being neutral but is actually supporting the crown prince, all while knowing that his younger son by blood, Xie Bi, is supporting Prince Yu. Because of the custody arrangement due to Jingrui’s uncertain birth status, he is close friends with the Zhuo family, who are masters of a sect of martial arts outside the capital. He uses them regularly to do his dirty work.
The Zhuo family (above: father Dingfeng and son Qingyao) is a martial arts family. In this episode, they attempt to assassinate prince Yu while he is outside the capital. (Jingrui has no freaking idea any of this is going on. Completely clueless.)
When that doesn’t work, Qingyao moves to help an elderly couple (pictured above), get to safety from some of Prince Yu’s supporters (ish) in big boats, who would really like to kill them. Mei Changsu slides in like a true drama queen, playing the flute, and the couple does, indeed, get to safety. This couple, as revealed at the end of the episode, has dirt on Duke Qing, an influential minister under Prince Yu’s control. Duke Qing and his people have been appropriating property and killing folks, among other things. It is to the Crown Prince’s advantage that Duke Qing is put on trial, so Xie Yu asks the Zhuos to ensure the couple’s safe passage.
Basically, this whole episode is about the two highest ranked princes (jerks, the both of them), trying to one-up, smear, and/or kill one another.
Turns out that, while Prince Yu went in person to Langya Hall to ask how to become Emperor, the Crown Prince sent some of his supporters to ask for the very same information. They both receive it in episode 1.
At the end of the first episode, you see Nihuang and the Emperor speak with Xia Dong, an investigative officer. The Emperor has successfully received the elderly couple’s report. He sends Xia Dong to investigate its veracity.
Xiao Jinghuan, Prince Yu: Xiao is his surname, and the name his father emperor and all his brothers share. The “Jing” in his given name is, you might notice, a bit of a theme. All the children of the emperor have this character in their names. (Xiao Jinghuan, Xiao Jingxuan, Xiao Jingyan.) Though Xiao Jingrui, son of the Xie and Zhuo families, has that whole imperial name thing going, he is not related to the emperor. The reason will be explained mid episode 3, actually!
Qin Banruo is very smart and has a network of spies she puts to use for Prince Yu’s benefit.
Duke Qing has been stealing land and murdering people. Things like this are not too terribly out of the usual for the supporters of the Crown Prince and Prince Yu, or the princes themselves.
Xie Bi wholeheartedly supports Prince Yu because he’s swallowed Prince Yu’s facade of wisdom and kindness hook, line, and sinker. Has absolutely no idea that his father, Xie Yu, is supporting the Crown Prince in order to play both sides. Xie Yu, however, is aware of his son’s allegiances.
We are now done with the primary princes and their supporters. Here are a lot of cool folks who show up in the first episodes and very short descriptions of their roles/relationships. None are affiliated with/supporting the Crown Prince/Prince Yu.
Commander General Meng Zhi: The only person Lin Shu/Mei Changsu informed of his plans before arriving in the capital. He was worried for Lin Shu and strongly advised him never to return. Knew Lin Shu when he was a boy, and once fought with the Chiyan Army. Now is in charge of the Imperial Guard. Will not act to harm the Emperor directly, but supports Mei Changsu’s bid for justice.
Li Gang shows up in the first episode giving a report to Mei Changsu/Lin Shu. Nice guy, member of Jiangzuo Alliance. Mother hen of MCS.
Xia Dong and Nihuang would have been close friends, but their respective positions in the massacre put them at odds. Xia Dong lost her husband, and believes the Lin family murdered him to keep him from reporting the “rebellion.” Mu Nihuang lost Lin Shu, to whom she was once engaged, and believes in the Lin family’s innocence. Xia Dong is about ready for Nihuang to marry so Nihuang’s connection to the Lins is no longer hanging between them. She hates Prince Jing because he has actively defended the Lin family in the past. The emperor mostly wants to tie Nihuang to a husband in order to control her.
Yan Yujin and Xiao Jingrui: Very close friends. Jingrui spent some time with his Other Dad outside the capital, exploring. He goes to pick up his friend Mei Changsu, since he has received news that Mei Changsu is suffering from a serious illness. He and Yujin go to invite MCS to the capital to recover at Jingrui’s family’s manor. (All according to Mei Changsu’s plan.)
Grand Princess Liyang: Soft-spoken. Unbreakable. Core of steel. Does not deserve to be married to Xie Yu, honestly. :(
Grand Empress: AKA that nice old lady who will make you cry in ep 2.
Mu Qing: Nihuang’s brother. Very, very invested in her suitor tournament and is angry that any of those fools would dare to seek his sister’s hand. Nosy, sweet, best intentions. Will fight everyone.
Tingsheng: I can’t spoil you, but keep an eye on him. Good fella, wants to learn how to read.
Lin Chen, friend of Mei Changsu and inveterate troll. Young master of Langya Hall. Exhausted doctor to Mei Changsu. 1000% done with everything. Also a troll. He gave both princes the exact same information when they came to ask after the throne: If they wanted to become Emperor, they’d need none other than Mei Changsu himself.

*chinhands* Tell me your thoughts about Nirvana on Fire! Orrrrr, if that is two broad a topic (since it's FIFTY FOUR DAMN EPISODES), tell me your thoughts onnnnnn...your favorite lady from the show!
Oh maaaaaan, okay :D I have just finished my WIP draft for my NIF fanfic (170k what the fuck), so this is a GREAT TIME to answer this! Thank you for such an inspiring topic!
It is such a good show. The costuming is often exquisite and obviously very carefully planned out, and the sets are also wonderful. Visually, it’s fucking stunning and just gorgeous to watch, minus some Not Great CGI here and there. The casting is also fantastic, and the actors are all so good - there’s so much subtlety and attention to detail. Even the minor characters are consistent and complex, and there’re a bunch of veeeeery small characterization details that are nevertheless continually incorporated, and I was so delighted when I started to pick up on them. Even the antagonists are well developed and make sense coming out of their contexts (for the most part, at least), and though they can be sympathetic to an extent, that doesn’t negate or minimize the genuine harm they’ve done or the way they’ve created their own downfalls.
Narratively and structurally, the show is a masterpiece as well. The political plots are very cleverly woven and intertwined, and characters’ motivations and ideologies are consistent and well developed. The amount of detailed foreshadowing is stunning, and every time I watch a scene or a section, I feel like I pick up new nuances. It’s just very tightly written. The last episode has some rather rushed pacing, and I have some issues with some things (there’s some fridging that I am Not About, for example), but overall, honestly, the writing and structure are fucking solid, and I enjoyed figuring things out as the story unfolded.
I also really like that, even though it’s a Magical Wuxia Illness, Mei Changsu’s illness and limitations are actually pretty fucking realistic. It resonated with me a lot, and it is, again, consistent throughout. He’s not well, and he makes things worse by pushing too hard, but overall, there are things he can do to mitigate the effects. There are consequences to things, and it comes through. Even secondary characters: Fei Liu is always treated with agency and like he’s actually his age, and Yujin’s eyesight is consistently shitty. Small things, but I really do appreciate it.
The major draw of this show, though, is its ethical and moral stance. It picks apart a lot of assumptions of power, and is very blunt and honest about living under a ruler who grinds down all dissent and promotes people based on his own emotional state. It’s a theme that’s developed throughout, and is critical of such self-serving paranoia. It’s also ruthless in its critique of privilege and the people who take advantage of it - that unthinking cruelty is the downfall of so many people who don’t think those beneath them are people.
It’s also a show about truth and justice and taking down a terrible government. There are so many characters who decide to contribute in what ways they can, and about the fear of what happens to those who push back, and about continuing when things are exhausting and seem to get you nowhere. It’s about making an impossible situation better, and about exposing convenient lies and giving justice to the dead. It’s about honesty and loyalty and actively making choices. It makes no bones about how hard and exhausting it is to fight back, but it’s also about hope. Hope, and seeing others clearly, and doing better even when you think you have nothing left to give. It is... in a lot of ways, it’s a story about people we thought were lost returning to us - literally or metaphorically. “What do we do with the time that is given us?”, y’know?
When good people band together and confront evil, we can go from surviving to thriving. I think that’s a message I really need right now, and it’s fundamentally a hopeful one.
It also has amazing friendships and the Only Redeemed Dad I will allow in media, so that’s a plus too. Please watch this show, because even though it’s a big time investment, it’s a really good one.
So, let’s finish off with some of my favorite ladies, because I cannot pick one, I love them all.
Nihuang: very badass and also gorgeous, sharp as her sword, that one. I love that she’s much more observant and politically aware than anyone ever gives her credit for, because she is so fucking smart, she is terrifying. I love her. It’s so cool to have a character who is a badass general and who can be just as underhanded and snarky as the main protagonist, but who is uncompromising about her emotions, too. She isn’t afraid of being sad, or of obviously loving her little brother, or of admitting that she’s upset about something Mei Changsu did. Also has many A+ looks.
Xia Dong: ALSO super badass and incredibly driven and loyal. I started the series all “but can I really love this essentially a private-FBI-agent?” and the answer is yes, yes I can. Loyalty is virtue #1 to her and everything else kind of derives from that, and the complexities of that become so much more clear through the course of the show. She’s smart, and clever, and she cares a lot about her people. She also loves her husband so much, she’s still grieving over a decade later, and she’s still so upset about the betrayal. I love her.
Consort Jing: quiet and wise and clever and beautiful. God, she’s so fucking cunning, and so very unassuming. Watching the way that she manipulates the situations in the court, and the way that she is so genuinely goodhearted and yet so ruthlessly intelligent is such a blast. A Good Mom and a Good Aunt, deserves every good thing in the world.
Grand Princess Liyang: Liyaaaaaang, she is amazing. Her story is SO FUCKING SAD but she’s so good. Her perseverance and her doubt and her bravery just reduce me to a puddle every time. She never gets a fucking break, and she has so much trauma and fear, but she is always brave, when it comes down to the wire. She also deserves every good thing in the world.
All the women in this show are good? They’re all interesting, and I wish we got to see more of them doing more things. I am keeping this list to just four, because otherwise I will be here all day, but man. This show has so many things to say about women and power and surviving in a sexist society, and it’s pretty fucking great.
#long post#nirvana in fire#it's a good show#a really good one#i cried a lot and then had a lot of emotions#also all the characters are great#even if the women are sometimes given the short shrift#answer memes#samyazaz

Biography of Sima Ying (Book of Jin 59)
(Sima Ying was another of the warring Eight Princes. Most of this material was adapted into ZZTJ.)
The Prince of Chengdu, Sima Ying, was styled Zhangdu. He was Emperor Wu's (Sima Yan's) sixteenth son. He was granted his title near the end of the Taikang era (~290), with his fief containing a hundred thousand households. Later, he was appointed as Colonel of Agile Cavalry, and then further promoted to Cavalier In Regular Attendance and General of Chariots and Cavalry.
At one point, Empress Jia Nanfeng's brother Jia Mi served as a tutor to Crown Prince Sima Yu. But Jia Mi did not conduct himself with the proper respect towards Sima Yu. Sima Ying blamed him for this, charging him with a fierce voice, "The Crown Prince is the heir to the state! Jia Mi, how dare you not show him proper respect?" Jia Mi was afraid, and because of this incident he arranged for Sima Ying to be sent away from Luoyang, to serve as General Who Pacifies The North and to be stationed at Ye. Sima Ying was later appointed Grand General Who Guards The North.
When the Prince of Zhao, Sima Lun, usurped the throne (in 301), he promoted Sima Ying to Grand General Who Conquers The North, and further granted him the privilege of a Separate Office with equal authority to the Three Excellencies. However, when the Prince of Qi, Sima Jiong, launched his righteous crusade against Sima Lun, Sima Ying raised soldiers to join with Sima Jiong.
He appointed the Prefect of Ye, Lu Zhi, as his Chief Clerk of the Left, and the Administrator of Dunqiu, Zheng Yan, as his Chief Clerk of the Right. He also appointed the Yellow Gate Gentleman, Cheng Mu, as his Marshal of the Left, and the Administrator of Yangping, He Yan, as his Marshal of the Right. To serve as his vanguard commanders, he appointed the Inspector of Yanzhou, Wang Yan, the Inspector of Jizhou, Li Yi, the Commanders Zhao Xiang and Shi Chao, and others.
When Sima Ying sent out his feather proclamations declaring his intentions, there was no one who did not respond to his call. By the time Sima Ying's army reached Zhaoge, he had a host of more than two hundred thousand.
When Zhao Xiang arrived at Huangqiao, he was defeated by Sima Lun's generals Shi Yi and Xu Chao; more than eight thousand of his troops were killed, and the soldiers were greatly shaken and unsettled by the defeat. Sima Ying wanted to fall back to guard Zhaoge. However, following the strategy of Lu Zhi and Wang Yan, he sent Zhao Xiang forward again with an army of eighty thousand, and Zhao Xiang advanced together with Wang Yan. Sima Lun likewise sent forward Sun Hui, Liu Kun, and other commanders leading thirty thousand men, and they reinforced Shi Yi and Xu Chao's men to resist Zhao Xiang and Sima Ying's other generals. Their soldiers wore exceptional armor that was as bright as the sun, and their iron cavalry charged forward. However, since Shi Yi had already defeated Zhao Xiang once before, he now thought little of his capabilities. Sima Lun's forces were less than ten li from Wen County when they fought another great battle against Sima Ying's men, and this time Shi Yi and the rest ran away and scattered. Sima Ying then crossed over the Yellow River, and he pressed his advantage by quickly marching forward. The General of the Left, Wang Yu, killed Sima Lun's advisor Sun Xiu and placed Sima Lun under house arrest, and he restored the deposed Emperor Hui back to the throne.
When Sima Ying entered the capital, he executed Sima Lun. Then he sent Zhao Xiang, Shi Chao, and other generals to assist Sima Jiong by attacking Zhang Hong at Yangdi. This caused Zhang Hong and Sima Lun's other commanders there to surrender.
Since Sima Jiong considered himself to be the chief architect of the crusade against Sima Lun, after he brought his own troops into Luoyang, he used his military might to garner more power and authority. Sima Ying camped his soldiers at the Imperial Academy. When he entered the court, Emperor Hui personally thanked him for his efforts. Sima Ying made obeisance to thank him, saying, "This was Grand Marshal Sima Jiong's undertaking; I can claim no share in it."
After he had finished his court visit and took his leave, he did not return to the barracks he had set up. He only went to pay his respects at the Ancestral Temple, and then left the city through the Dongyang Gate, intending to return to Ye. Sima Ying sent a letter bidding farewell to Sima Jiong. When Sima Jiong received the letter, he was greatly alarmed, and he rode quickly to overtake Sima Ying, finally catching up with him at Seven Li Gully. Sima Ying halted his carriage and said his goodbyes to Sima Jiong, weeping freely. He said nothing about the affairs of the times, and only spoke of his concerns for his mother's sickness and pain. None of the common people who saw this could resist turning their hearts towards him.
When Sima Ying arrived at Ye, an edict went out by way of Grand Commandant Wang Cui, granting Sima Ying the exceptional ceremonies of the Nine Bestowments. He was also promoted to Grand General, Commander of all military affairs, and Credential Holder, and was granted authority over the affairs of the Masters of Writing. Furthermore, he was granted the honors of entering court without hastening his step and without needing to remove his sword or shoes. Sima Ying did accept the offered ranks and titles, but he declined the ceremonies of the Nine Bestowments.
Sima Ying sent up a petition outlining the righteous merits achieved by his subordinates Lu Zhi, He Yan, Dong Hong, Wang Yan, Zhao Xiang, and five others, and fiefs were created for all of these people as Dukes or Marquises.
He also sent another petition stating, "When the Grand Marshal was fighting at Yangdi before, locked in stalemate with strong enemies for a long time, the common people of that region were devastated by the fighting. Even now, they are suffering from famine, hunger, and bitter cold, and they need the utmost assistance. I beg leave to send out carts from my commandaries and counties to transport a hundred and fifty thousand 斛s of grain currently in the official stores of Hebei, in order to provide for the people of Yangdi."
Lu Zhi said to Sima Ying, "More than eight thousand men perished at the battle of Huangqiao, and now the heat of summer is upon us. With their bare bones lying exposed in the fields, there is a danger that their remains will waste away. In former times, the King of Zhou buried bleached bones, and this is why we find in the Book of Poetry the verse, 'Dead men lie upon the road; one shall grant them grave's abode. (Xiao Bian 6)' Can we do any less for such men who died on your behalf?"
So Sima Ying had more than eight thousand coffins built, and used the funds of his princely fief in order to obtain clothing. He inspected the area to find the fallen bodies, and buried them north of Huangqiao, planting trees and hedges to serve as a fence around their graveyard. He also built the Hall of Great Sacrifice, where he carved a stone and raised a stele that listed the righteous achievements of these fallen soldiers, and arranged to have their families offer sacrifices to them four times a year. He also canvassed their towns and villages, and advanced the fallen soldiers by two ranks. He even ordered Wen County in Henei commandary to bury more than fourteen thousand of Sima Lun's fallen soldiers as well.
Sima Ying himself had a beautiful appearance, but his mind was clouded, and he could not read. But he was honest and sincere in his temperament, and he trusted Lu Zhi with affairs, so he was able to achieve such luster.
With Sima Jiong becoming more arrogant and lacking in proper conduct, the people began to incline towards Sima Ying. Another edict was sent out by way of the Palace Attendant, Feng Sun, and the Prefect of the Palace Secretariat, Bian Cui, commanding Sima Ying to return to Luoyang to help support the government, and once again granting him the Nine Bestowments. However, Sima Ying continued to decline this offer and would not accept.
He was soon promoted to Grand Guardian to the Crown Prince, Sima Tan. But Sima Ying's close companion Meng Jiu did not wish to go back to Luoyang, and his mother Lady Cheng had great longing and attachment for Ye. Sima Ying discussed the matter for a long time, but could not make a decision.
By now, the soldiers that Sima Ying had recruited for the crusade against Sima Lun had been in service for a long time. They all resented their neglect and wanted to go back to their homes, and some of them outright deserted. So the soldiers wrote on the gates of Luoyang, "Since the great affair has been concluded, the silkworms want to hurry off. We ask that you allow us to depart, and let us tend to our own affairs. We came to serve justice, and it is now just to let us leave. If another emergency should break out, we shall speak of it then." Sima Ying knew he could not keep the soldiers, so he let them depart, and the common people were thus settled.
After Sima Jiong was defeated by Sima Ai (in 302), the affairs of state all passed into the hands of Sima Ying. No issue, no matter how insignificant, was resolved without first being referred to Sima Ying at Ye.
When the rebel Zhang Chang caused turmoil and pillaging in the Jing region (in 303), Sima Ying petitioned that he lead a campaign south against him, making great noises to that effect. By this time, resting on his laurels, Sima Ying had become proud and arrogant, and he allowed affairs to become lax or neglected, worse than Sima Jiong had been.
Sima Ying was inclined to indulge whatever he desired. But he was worried about the Prince of Changsha, Sima Ai, who was still in the capital. So he and the Prince of Hejian, Sima Yong, submitted a petition requesting the executions of Empress Yang Xianrong's father Yang Xuanzhi, the General of the Left, Huangfu Shang, and others. They also demanded that Sima Ai be sent back to his fief.
Sima Yong's general Zhang Fang then campaigned against the capital. Sima Ying appointed the Interior Minister of Pingyuan, Lu Ji, as his Vanguard Commander, General of the Front, and Credential Holder. Sima Ying advanced to Zhaoge, where every night his spears and halberds shined like fire and the wells within his ramparts all looked like dragons. He advanced to camp at Henan, using the Qing River as his rampart. He built a floating bridge to cross into Hebei. To form this bridge, he enveloped large wood into great stones, and sank them in the river to form a bridge fasted together, which he called Shibie ("Stone Turtle").
Lu Ji was defeated in battle, suffering a great many deaths in the fighting. Lu Ji had also been slandered by Meng Jiu, so Sima Ying arrested Lu Ji and beheaded him, as well as killing his family to the third degree. More of this is discussed in Lu Ji's biography.
Sima Ying then pressed on and attack Luoyang. At this time, a native of Changshan, Wang Yu, had gathered a host of more than ten thousand people, wishing to attack Sima Ying. But when Sima Ai was overthrown by a coup, Wang Yu's followers beheaded him and then surrendered.
Sima Ying entered Luoyang for a time, before returning to his post at Ye. His fief was increased to twenty commandaries, and he was appointed Prime Minister. Sima Yong then petitioned that Sima Ying ought to be appointed as the new heir to the throne. So Crown Prince Sima Tan was deposed, and Sima Ying was appointed as Crown Younger Brother, with the same authority as Prime Minister he already possessed. He managed the state in the same manner as Wu of Wei (Cao Cao), and the imperial carriages and clothing were all moved to Ye. He petitioned to have the household guard soldiers be made subordinate to his own office as Prime Minister, as well as the household guards of the princes. His presumption and extravagance grew more and more by the day, and he had a heart that knew no sovereign. He also trusted in Meng Jiu and other such men. So he lost much of the hopes of the people that he had earlier enjoyed.
At the beginning of the Yongxing era (~304), the General of the Left, Chen XX [眕 Zhen, according to ZZTJ], the Generals of the Gentlemen of the Central Hall, Biao Bao and Cheng Fu, the former General of Changsha, Shangguan Si, and others brought Emperor Hui with them to campaign against Sima Ying. Their couriers sent their proclamation out to every corner, and people came to join them like gathering clouds. By the time their army arrived at Anyang, they had swelled to more than a hundred thousand people.
Everyone in Ye was shocked and afraid. Sima Ying wanted to flee, but his Official Bu Xiong was capable and skilled, and he advised, "Do not run! The southern army is sure to be defeated."
So Sima Ying held a meeting with his ministers to ask them for plans of what to do. The Prince of Dong'an, Sima Yao, told him, "The Son of Heaven is accompanying this army. You ought to remove your armor, bind yourself in ropes, and go out to welcome them and beg forgiveness for your crimes."
But the Marshal Wang Hun and the Army Advisor Cui Kuang urged Sima Ying to meet the enemy in battle, and Sima Ying followed their advice. He sent the General of Martial Display, Shi Chao, to lead an army of fifty thousand soldiers to oppose the enemy, and Shi Chao advanced to Dangyin.
Chen Zhen's two younger brothers Chen Kuang and Chen Gui came from Ye to join his army, and they said, "Everyone inside Ye had already scattered." Because of that, Chen Zhen did not prepare much in the way of defenses. Then Shi Chao's army suddenly appeared, and the royal army was defeated. Emperor Hui was struck by an arrow, and the Palace Attendant Ji Shao died beside him. Everyone around the imperial carriage scattered and fled, abandoning Emperor Hui among the weeds. Shi Chao then brought Emperor Hui back with him to Ye.
Sima Ying changed the reign era title to the first year of Jianwu. He put Sima Yao to death. He also made his own assignments to the imperial offices, and decisions of life and death were all left up to him. Sacrifices were set up south of Ye.
The General Who Maintains The North, Wang Jun, and the General Who Tranquilizes The North and Duke of Dongying, Sima Teng, killed Sima Ying's appointee as Inspector of Youzhou, He Yan. So Sima Ying marched against Wang Jun. Wang Jun camped in Jizhou and did not advance; he joined together with Sima Teng, the Wuwan, and Jiezhu (ZZTJ has this as "the Wuhuan leader Jiezhu") to attack Sima Ying.
When Wang Jun's advance riders reached Ye, Sima Ying sent his new Inspector of Youzhou, Wang Bin, along with Shi Chao, Li Yi, and others to resist Wang Jun's attack. But they were defeated by Jiezhu and the others.
Everyone in Ye was greatly disturbed; the officials all ran for their lives, and the officers and soldiers all scattered. Sima Ying, also afraid, led several dozen of his personal riders out of the city, taking Emperor Hui with him. Accompanied by his Chief of the Palace Secretariat, Lu Zhi, bringing a lone cart, they fled, reaching Luoyang five days later. Jiezhu pursued them as far as Zhaoge, but when he could not catch up with them, he turned back. Sima Yong sent Zhang Fang to bring twenty thousand armored soldiers to escort Sima Ying.
When they reached Luoyang, Zhang Fang forced Emperor Hui to do as he wished. He compelled Sima Ying, the Prince of Yuzhang (Sima Chi), Gao Guang, Lu Zhi, and others to return with him to Chang'an. Sima Yong stripped Sima Ying of his place as Crown Younger Brother and ordered him sent to a border post, replacing him with Sima Chi as the new Crown Younger Brother.
Now that Sima Ying had been deposed, the people of Hebei began to feel nostalgic for him. At Ye, the former generals Gongshi Fan, Ji Sang, and others rose up with soldiers to welcome Sima Ying's return, with all of them feeling the same way. So Sima Yong once again appointed Sima Ying as Grand General Who Guards The Army and as Commander of military affairs in Hebei. He gave him a thousand soldiers and ordered him to return to guard Ye.
Sima Ying got as far as Luoyang, but by then the Prince of Donghai, Sima Yue, had raised his own army to welcome Emperor Hui's return from Chang'an, and his vanguard was nearby. Sima Ying feared that the north was now too strong and powerful and that he would not be able to go any further, so he fled from Luoyang back to Guanzhong.
After Sima Yue's forces had brought Emperor Hui back to Luoyang, Sima Ying went from Huayin to Wuguan, heading out to Xinye. An imperial edict was issued ordering the General Who Guards The South, Liu Hong, and the General of the Household Gentlemen of the South, Liu Tao, to arrest Sima Ying. So Sima Ying abandoned his mother and wife and fled in a lone cart with his two sons, the Prince of Lujiang, Sima Pu, and the Prince of Zhongdu, Sima Kuo. He crossed the Yellow River and went to Zhaoge, where he rounded up some of his former officers and soldiers, several hundred in all, planning to go join Gongshi Fan. But he Administrator of Dunqiu, Feng Song, arrested Sima Ying and his two sons and sent him to Ye.
The Prince of Fanyang, Sima Xiao, placed them under house arrest, but he had no other intentions for them. But Sima Xiao soon passed away from illness. His Chief Clerk, Liu Yu, could see how much regard the people of Ye had for Sima Ying, and he was worried that Sima Ying would become a threat someday. So he did not hold mourning for Sima Xiao. He ordered men to forge an edict from the capital to use as a pretext for what he was about to do. During the night, he ordered Sima Ying to commit suicide.
Sima Ying asked his jailer Tian Hui, "Has the Prince of Fanyang passed away?"
Tian Hui replied, "I don't know."
Sima Ying then asked, "How old are you?"
Tian Hui replied, "Forty-nine."
Sima Ying asked him, "Do you know what the will of Heaven is?"
Tian Hui replied, "I don't."
Sima Ying said, "After I die, will the realm know peace or not? It has been three years since I was sent into exile; my hands and my feet have not seen a bath, but my head has been scalded many times!"
His two sons wailed and wept, so Sima Ying ordered someone to take them away. Then Sima Ying stretched out to lay his head towards the east, and then ordered Tian Hui to strangle him. He was twenty-seven years old. His two sons also died. The people of Ye mourned for him.
When Sima Ying had been defeated, his officials and subordinates had all ran off and scattered, and only Lu Zhi stayed with him until the end. Those who discussed the matter all commended him.
Later on, after Ji Sang killed Sima Teng (in 307), he announced he had avenged Sima Ying. He dug up Sima Ying's coffin and placed it on a cart; whenever he had some decision to make, he would first inform Sima Ying's spirit, and only afterwards implement it. After Ji Sang was defeated, Sima Ying's coffin was dumped into a well. His former subordinates came and claimed the coffin, and reburied him at Luoyang, with Emperor Huai granting him the ceremonies due to the prince of a county.
穎死後數年,開封間有傳穎子年十餘歲,流離百姓家,東海王越遣人殺之。永嘉中,立東萊王蕤子遵為穎嗣,封華容縣王。後沒于賊,國除。
Several years after Sima Ying's death, a boy around ten years old who was rumored to be Sima Ying's son was reported in Kaifeng, mixed in among the common people. Sima Yue sent someone to kill him.
During the Yongjia era (307-312), the Prince of Donglai, Sima Ruy, had a son Sima Zun who was chosen to be Sima Ying's heir, and Sima Zun was named as Prince of Huarong County. But later, Sima Zun was killed by bandits, and so the fief was abolished.

wei50-blog replied to your post “Becoming Royals too easy The only hiccup in the morning court came...”
So by joining Young-Do’s personal guard, Hyo-Shin will not be a judge anymore? Smart political move, likely something Hyo-Shin was glad to have a reason to make? Because he doesn’t want to be his father’s tool? Now that Hyo-Shin has his own place, he has separating himself from his family but he is still the sole heir? If Eun-Sang did become his wife, she wouldn’t have to deal with a fil?
By joining Young-Do’s personal guard, Hyo-Shin has given up all rights to his family’s ventures. He’s lost his title and day job, basically. Hyo-Shin doesn’t mind. He’s good at the law and know show to manipulate it well. He would’ve been an amazing minister of justice but he’s not really a scholar. He’s not really a warrior either but he prefers the ability to protect those he loves than sitting behind a desk.
There is no guarantee that Eun-Sang wouldn’t be subject to her father-in-law if Hyo-Shin didn’t separate himself from his family and Rachel can’t risk that.
Hey, being part of Young-Do’s personal guard does give Hyo-Shin more opportunities to be with Eun-Sang, hopefully! At least the king kept the first part of his word, getting Hyo-Shin is engaged to Ji-Sun. Still don’t trust him at all.Hm, if prediction on king’s likely future action correct, so many sent to war, including Bo-Na. She should be having her baby soon? Haven’t heard anything about Chan-Young and General Lee too!
Negotiating isn’t how Dong-Wook likes to rule so he will be looking for opportunities to be domineering. But Hyo-Shin will get more time with Eun-Sang since they will both be around the royal couple at the same time.
The war and those characters will come up in later chapters >.>
Haha, everyone upset at Myung-Soo for not spending more time with Yoo-Ra! Hope not construed negatively for Yoo-Ra for not holding his attention? Myung-Soo can’t drop is spy master responsibilities easily! True that a lot has happened in less than a day. Smart measure of Myung-Soo about court ladies. Also interesting that Yoo-Ra does care about the trappings of her new position. Glad she does like Rachel and Rachel is having a son. If not…
>.>
Most of that was just teasing from his brother and father-figure and Myung-Soo being just a tad bit defensive. Myung-Soo has been dropping tasteful hints to the court ladies spying on the royals for other houses that Yoo-Ra did her duty to him well and that he enjoyed himself. He knows it will get back to Yoo-Ra and calm some of her nerves.
Yoo-Ra could become a rival for Rachel when it comes to their children but luckily she won’t ^^;
Myung-Soo unsure of his own fertility? Reacting to the additional pressures on him now that he’s married? Afraid of not being able to fulfill these duties? Haha father with his two sons! Always love it when Nam-Il takes on that role and also how the boys just accept it! Haha Myung-Soo so offended by the multiple implied slight to his virility!
:D :D :D
Love Young-Do for putting Rachel’s personal mental and physical health above her perceived duties and responsibilities. Giving the throne to Myung-Soo’s sons shows that Rachel is more important to Young-Do than anything at this point. So true that many women do die in childbirth without access to the healthcare we have now. Rachel’s chances are lower than others though since she is well nourished and has access to good sanitary measures. (whew!)
Childbirth is dangerous by its very nature but one thing I’ve learned over the years was that it was a lot less dangerous before men got involved. We lost so much important techniques when midwives were burned as witches in the West and when the West tried to colonize the East. Rachel is in a good place, Hyun-Joo is both a physician and a midwife, and Asian countries have had a good sense of how to be sanitary for millennia.
Women dying in childbirth happened but Rachel’s got good odds.
Yea, if Rachel died, Young-Do would be shattered. Young-Do did not love any of his partners the way he loves Rachel. His love for her is so encompassing and so deep that can’t see him recovering enough to love someone else. Possible to still father children even without loving her? Just don’t see Young-Do feeling the need to sire an heir take priority over his feelings for Rachel if she were gone.
He could do his duty to have children with another woman but that’s all it would be to him and he understands that it wouldn’t be fair to his new wife for him to treat her that way. If Myung-Soo had a son, he wouldn’t even bother. In Min-Jae was born and alive, he would probably wait until he was mature enough, before retiring and sticking him on the throne.

Villains in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People
Awhile back, I mentioned I had thoughts about Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People and villains, but kept not posting most of them. A couple people requested that I do that already, so here goes:
Consider this scenario:
***
A young man from a noble family grows up somewhere in between “poverty” and “poor relation” with only his mother to guide him after his father is murdered by a robber. As a child, he would play with his family’s servants, and one servant boy a few years older than him worked as his assistant in his studies and seemed very interested in learning, despite the fact that his social status would prevent him from every being able to do anything about those interests. Years later, he enters a prestigious school for young scholars.
He soon befriends another young man of noble birth who also seems out of place among their more affluent classmates, as his new friend grew up in near-solitude on a mountain, with only his family for any constant companionship. The two young men are taken under the wing of one of their teachers, and excel in their studies. Some time later, their studies completed, the two friends enter the palace together in minor clerical position. Somewhat by coincidence, their positions lead to their helping to expose a number of corrupt officials. Along with a few other instances, this causes them to be brought to the attention of the king, and they are soon given new, more elevated positions. The young lord is made a county magistrate, while his friend requests that he become an undercover investigator. The young lord sets off to his new post, desiring little more than to do his job well, and to care for his devoted mother.
An earnest and committed official, he advances quickly, and returns to the capital a few years later to assume a considerably better post, one that he has earned due to his talents. He is soon reunited with his friend, something that makes both young men happy, though they’re less happy with how each seems to have different interpretations of ho strictly certain laws should be upheld. Something happens, though, and the young lord’s friend begins avoiding him. Soon after, people in the court conspire to remove him from his new position and demote him, and he learns that his friend was the one responsible for it. His friend offers him no explanation, and the young lord is given a new assignment: to find and catch a bandit who has been attacking a number of noblemen.
This is when his mother drops the first bomb: his father had not been killed by a robber, but rather, had been murdered by a servant who had deceived and kept money from his father, and blackmailed his mother to escape justice. After murdering his father, the servant became a rich smuggler in a fishing village, effectively becoming the lord of that small community. The servant is dead, but his second son, who grew up in wealth and luxury after his father caused the young lord to grow up in near poverty, is the bandit the young lord has been looking for. In the following months, the young lord attempts to catch the bandit, and is even successful at one point, but faces frequent interference from his former friend. Growing suspicious, the young lord investigates his former friend, and eventually learns that his friend is not who he claimed to be, and is someone else who stole a dead nobleman’s identity. Then the second bomb drops: His friend is the older son of the servant who murdered his father, and actually the boy who assisted in his studies, and has been helping his bandit brother all along. Worse, his former friend has corrupted part of the king’s army, and caused them to turn against the king and join his bandit brother.
***
All the above could very, very easily be applied to any number of sageuk protagonists. In fact, aside from a few very character-specific things, most of it has shown up plenty of times. Revenge! Loss of position and rising in the ranks through hard work! Your closest friend becomes your worst enemy! Rebellions! Etc. The difference here is the perspective.
Su Hak did not “play with” the children of servants. He was a bully who forced them to entertain him. Amogae did not give little Su Hak rides on his shoulder out of fondness, he did it because Su Hak could have his parents abuse Amogae and his family if he displeased Su Hak. Gil Hyun and his desire to learn were objects of contempt, the actions of an inferior being daring to think about desiring things reserved for people who were inherently superior by virtue of birth. Amogae earned plenty money for his master, more than any servant had before, and the money he kept back was to attempt to buy the freedom of his family. While Amogae did, indeed, straight up murder his master, he didn’t do it out of greed, but to avenge his wife, who died because of Lord and Lady Jo’s greed. Gil Dong and co were, indeed, attacking noblemen, but they were corrupt noblemen who abused their position and the law. Gil Hyun kinda did Su Hak wrong in ditching him and selling him out with no explanation after learning the truth about their past, but he had already started to realize that Su Hak was not quite the kind, openminded friend he had always seemed to be. Their friendship was effectively over after the discussion of the husband who had been deemed just in murdering his wife for adultery. Gil Hyun (whose own mother had been falsely accused of adultery to justify the actions that caused her death) saw that it was an unjust and unequal law, and questioned whether the murdered wife had even been guilty, as friends and neighbors had seen nothing to suggest she was, and questioned whether the law could be considered a just law. And if the law is unjust, then it should be corrected. Su Hak agreed that there were problems with how the law was upheld, but not because it was unjust or unequal, but because some magistrates dared to make exceptions. The law is the law, and is therefore justice in and of itself, circumstance and exception have no place in it. Even without their then-unknown-to-them past, two men so fervently devoted to their own ideas of justice and interpretations of the law were going to end up in opposition to each other one way or another anyway. Beyond that doomed friendship: the king is a cruel monster. Su Hak either does not see that or does and finds it irrelevant, because the king is divine and untouchable, and the troops who turned on him did so because they could not personally justify the blind patriotism that forced them to carry out the king’s monster orders.
Here’s the thing: most sageuk villains are so very obviously villains at all times. They can be well developed, they can be interesting, sometimes they stop being villains and become allies, but the villainy shows through at all times in one way or another. That’s not the case with Rebel. Su Hak is a very earnest and committed young officer who wants to take care of his mother and serve his country. Lady Jo is a nice old lady who is devoted to her son, supports officials who she thinks are worthy and likes to meet her son’s friends. Teacher Song is a good teacher who engages in politics and seeks the betterment of the country. King Yeonsangun is a young king struggling to accomplish his goals in a court that still tries to test and manipulate him.
These aren’t false faces, they’re their true faces. But they’re only one side if these characters. Just like that sweet neighbor lady seems so kind and accepting until you see her confronted with something that doesn’t fit her personal moral world view, and voices opinions that make you feel nauseous and you don’t know if you should say something or just avoid engaging because who wants trouble with your neighbors? Or she says she voted for Trump, and it’s suddenly like she’s a new, awful person. Lady Jo is a nice old lady who loves her son but is also horrifying in her obsessive devotion to the class system, and her desire to destroy anyone who challenges it. Su Hak is an earnest and committed young official who is also a bigot, though he lacks his mother’s zealotry, and he couldn’t care less if the laws harm others because the law benefits him. (His bigotry and social superiority also repeatedly cause his downfall, because they lead to his ignoring the advice of the two smartest and most observant people available to him. (One because she’s a woman, even if it is his own mother, and the other because he’s a commoner.) Teacher Song is a good teacher who wants what’s best for his country, and he doesn’t care who is hurt or what lives are destroyed in the process, including using and abusing children. Yeonsangun was a young king who struggled against a court that wanted to manipulate and control him, and he’s also a king who is so drunk with his own divinity that he will destroy anyone who crosses him or interferes with him, and view everyone who is less divine as someone who exists for his personal enjoyment.
With the exception of Lady Jo, we only saw the “good” faces of these characters for quite some time. Sure, we knew Song was up to something for quite a while, but it took a long time and a number of reveals to really know how awful he is. History told us what to expect with Yeonsangun, but the show still made us question if maybe we should focus a bit less on the purges themselves and more on the actions of those who were purged. We knew how Su Hak was raised and what he was like as a child, but he was just so nice and friendly as a student that we al hoped he had overcome both genetics and upbringing. The thing is, none of the villainous revelations were surprising. Shocking, sure, and Su Hak in particular was a punch in the gut to most viewers, but everything was always there, the characters themselves simply sell their own worldviews to an astonishing degree. This is WHY they’re good villains. With the exception of Yeonsangun, they aren’t all villain all the time. They’re normal people who have sides to them that we find reprehensible.
Sidenote: I don’t know if Su Ha was deliberately written to be a vicious deconstruction of sageuk heroes, but he’s a very good one.
Pedo Prince (I still can’t be bothered to learn his name) is the only exception to this. He’s all villain all the time, but he’s also by far-and deliberately-the least developed of the villains. He’s dangerous because of his position and important to other villains because of what his position provides him, but he’s also pretty irrelevant as an autonomous character, and exists largely to help push the plot in certain ways.
I haven’t included Mori or Noksoo in this because they’re harder to pin down, and I don’t think either qite qualifies as a villain. The most truly evil thing about Mori is his eyeliner, and for the most part, the show has stopped him from carrying out the tasks he’s given that would really qualify as “evil,” either because someone stops him, he hesitates long enough for Gil Dong to swoop in, or he actually makes a choice for once. His big issue is that that boy needs to just start making his own choices and attaching himself to better people, instead of attaching himself to awful people who use him and just going along with them. Noksoo is a more complicated. She’s ambitious, certainly, but we also know that at one point she saw herself as monstrous for what she perceived as her cruelty, when in truth, it was what she had to do to survive the life she was in. The historical Noksoo was apparently quite the piece of work, but it’s hard to say whether or not the same applies to our Noksoo. She can be petty and cruel, but it’s hard to say how much is truly pettiness and cruelty, how much is to show the side that Yeonsangun likes (I mean, the dude pretty much fell in love with her after he learned she used him in an elaborate scheme too get revenge against her childhood abuser, obviously he likes her vicious), and how much is displaying cruelty herself so that Yeonsangun won’t exact a worse cruelty.
This was written on Saturday but scheduled for Tuesday by request since the show is being preempted for presidential debates, so its entirely possible that something will happen on Monday to change my perspective on something in here and I won’t remember to update this.
#rebel thief who stole the people#rebel hong gil dong#kdrama#sageuk#tief ho stole the people is definitely the most appropriate subtitle after last week's episodes imo#but hong gil dong has always been fandom's refered subtitle

The family of this very violent gangster nailed shut the door to his room, though they still allowed him to visit his room according to strict protective ground rules set by the court. After trying unsuccessfully to shoot a cop so that he would also die, “suicide by cop,” he ended up being mentored by Victory Outreach. He was so on the edge of violent explosion when I interviewed him, I didn’t give him much chance of staying alive. Amazingly, when I checked up on him over the years, I found that he was still out of the gang life. Photo: Tony Carnes/A Journey through NYC religions

S. Korea president faces examination of her political existence in demo
S. Korea president faces examination of her political existence in demo –
SEOUL, South Korea – A attorney for South Korea’s disgraced president has in contrast her impeachment to the deaths of Jesus Christ and the ancient Greek thinker Socrates.
Although that may be more than the top rated, the impeachment demo of President Park Geun-hye is of crucial worth for the world’s eleventh most significant financial state as the govt tries to strengthen positions, restore self confidence between furious citizens and navigate relations with a new administration in its close ally, the United States, as very well as its normally belligerent archrival, nuclear-armed North Korea.
A caretaker prime minister now tries to steer the region when the Constitutional Court docket decides no matter if Park — who spends her times, powerless, in the presidential palace — should permanently step down more than a corruption scandal or be reinstated.
The ruling could consider months, but a crucial level arrives Tuesday when the courtroom very likely hears from Park’s jailed confidante Choi (pronounced Chwey) Before long-sil, who the president allegedly helped extort cash and favors from organizations and authorized to interfere with govt affairs.
A seem at the forged of figures, the problems and how factors in this momentous demo could possibly pan out:
___
THE Attorneys
The prosecution at the demo, the second of its form in South Korean heritage, is led by the same lawmakers who voted to impeach Park very last thirty day period after months of significant road demonstrations by millions of furious but peaceful protesters.
Guide prosecutor Kweon (pronounced Gwon) Seong Dong, chairman of legislature’s Judiciary Committee who only just lately remaining Park’s conservative ruling celebration, is functioning with opposition lawmakers who authored Park’s impeachment movement and with a lot more than a dozen legal professionals.
Park’s protection crew contains Web optimization (pronounced Suh) Seok-gu, a right-wing attorney who in contrast Park to Jesus and who this 7 days made available a plea to “God who freed us from Japanese colonial rule and defended us from North Korea to guard the Constitutional Court docket and give the people today the gospel of hope.”
Taking away Park from office environment would require the help of at minimum six of the court’s nine justices. If Park is booted, the region need to maintain a presidential election within just 60 times.
___
THE Fees
Park is accused of extortion, bribery, abusing her electrical power and leaking govt tricks. Her alleged crimes, lawmakers reported, broken the country’s democracy and marketplace financial state.
Park allegedly conspired with Choi, who experienced no formal position in govt, and Park’s former senior secretary Ahn Jong-beom to strain some of the country’s most significant organizations in 2015 into providing a put together $sixty five million to two foundations that Choi controlled. Park is also accused of buying Ahn to strain organizations into providing rewarding promotions to ad and sporting activities administration corporations operate by Choi.
The organizations couldn’t refuse Park’s demands mainly because they feared issues obtaining govt acceptance for jobs and remaining targeted in tax investigations, the expenses reported. Park is also accused of soliciting bribes the organizations, some of which are also remaining investigated, allegedly gave to Choi’s foundations with the expectation of govt favors.
The courtroom will also hear accusations that Park conspired to install Choi’s associates in govt, restricted media reporting and bungled the response to a 2014 ferry sinking that killed a lot more than three hundred primarily learners.
___
THE WITNESSES
Tensions will be high when Choi, the target of intensive media scrutiny, seems in courtroom Tuesday as a witness.
Also showing up that day will be Ahn and Jung Ho-sung, an additional former presidential aide charged of passing hundreds of govt paperwork, including dozens of labeled types, to Choi.
The courtroom will also evaluate lawmakers’ ask for for Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong and Park’s former chief of staff Kim Ki-choon, who is suspected of buying the blacklisting of hundreds of artists deemed unfriendly to Park, to seem as witnesses.
Park is suspected of instructing govt officials to assist a 2015 merger involving two Samsung affiliates go through, and then experienced the officials allegedly push Samsung to deliver Choi with cash and favors. The offer authorized Lee, the Samsung heir, to promote a father-to-son succession of electrical power and company prosperity.
___
PARK’S NO-Exhibit
Park, keen to avoid a community grilling, simply cannot be forced to testify, and her legal professionals say you can find no likelihood she’ll seem.
While she has publicly denied the accusations, Park has however to be questioned right by investigators, and her legal professionals have minor to gain by enabling her to testify in courtroom, according to some authorized professionals.
Park’s legal professionals may want to stall mainly because Park’s reputation is so small now that they could possibly truly feel they will get a better ruling the longer the circumstance usually takes. She was at first set to finish her one five-yr expression in February 2018.
Park’s legal professionals are very likely to need that the prosecution occur up with a lot more proof to back again their expenses. That could necessarily mean expending a lot more time locating paperwork and a lot more witnesses.
The courtroom is also taking into consideration a ask for by Park’s legal professionals for reports from organizations about no matter if they had been definitely forced into sponsoring foundations controlled by Choi.
Park’s crew reported that the courtroom need to independently verify information mainly because the investigation by prosecutors can’t be dependable. Lawmakers dismissed the ask for as a stalling tactic that unfairly pressures the organizations.
___
THE Finish Recreation
It truly is unclear how rapidly the courtroom will rule.
The very last time South Korean lawmakers voted to impeach a president, in 2004, the courtroom reinstated late liberal President Roh (pronounced Noh) Moo-hyun after two months, stating allegations of slight election law violations and incompetence were not enough to justify his unseating.
The accusations towards Park are substantially graver, the circumstance a lot more intricate, and some imagine it will consider the courtroom longer to rule.
Although the Constitutional Court docket Regulation suggests the courtroom need to rule on situations within just six months — which would necessarily mean ahead of June six — the time limit is normally disregarded.

(not SPN) I'm a sucker for Feels and Pain, and it sounds like Nirvana in Fire provides these. One question before I dive into what sounds like beautiful heartbreak — I live for meaningful platonic relationships and I can only justify starting a whole new show if there's going to be at least one. Is there? (Romance is fine too, as either a main- or side-focus, but I need my friend!shipping, ya feel me?)
Oh my goodness, Anon! I could not feel you more, and this show is so chock-full of powerful and heartbreaking do-anything-for-you friendships that you are literally spoiled for choice because you want to give your heart to every single one of them, but there is only so much heart to give and so many amazing non-romantic bonds. The vanishingly few romantic relationships absolutely take back-burner to the amazing friendships.
The answer to your question, in short, is an eardrum-shattering, resounding oh my god YES. In fact, I’m going to have to make a list of Meaningful Platonic Relationships, because this show can’t have a single character without beautiful and painful platonic attachments. disclaimer: This list is not complete, because if it was, it would be unending.
Warning: Minor allusions to preseries events, but nothing detailed/nothing you don’t learn in the first episode or two. Plus, going in with a bit of a heads-up will alleviate some of the inevitable and brain-bending confusion when the show smacks you in the face with its huge ensemble cast in the first two episodes.
Mu Nihuang and Xia Dong: The badass general and the smart executive investigative officer have a terribly wonderful and complex friendship. Both value their friendship highly but find themselves at odds because their relative places in the Big “Betrayal” put them on opposite sides. Despite that, they get along well, but there’s an undercurrent of tension.
Xiao Jingrui and Yan Yujin: These small, soft boys have the gentlest and most powerful friendship powered by faith in each other and Yujin trying to drag Jingrui out to have fun so he can forget his overwhelmingly messed-up family situation and the weird political implications it comes with.
Xiao Jingrui and Yan Yujin and Mei Changsu (who has way too many names so I’ll just use that one) + more: These two have a lovely friendship with MCS, and it’s Jingrui’s friendship with MCS that brings him to the capital in the first place, to “recover from his illness.” They all get along well with Fei Liu well, too. Bonus Tingsheng in the image below. Jingrui not pictured.
Consort Jing and her son, Jingyan: Want beautiful family bonds? Look no further. Consort Jing (AKA: Jingmum) is a remarkably intelligent and intuitive doctress and strategist without whose help nothing of consequence would have happened, and she loves her son (and her son’s supposedly deceased best friend *wink wink nudge nudge*) more than her own life.
Jingyan and Mu Nihuang: Childhood friends drawn together by tragedy. Both extremely competent kickers of asses and takers of names. Nihuang “lost” her betrothed in the supposed “rebellion.” Jingyan lost one of the most powerful friendships you will ever have the pleasure of sobbing about. (x)
Mu Nihuang and her little brother, Mu Qing: They will never fail to make you smile. Mu Qing is entirely aware of his sister’s strength and competence but is very Smol and also is invested in her happiness in adorable little brother ways.
Consort Jing and Consort Hui: They’re just so sweet and supportive. Want a show where the ladies are relevant to the plot, varied, complex, amazingly characterized, intelligent, independent, and supportive of each other? Look no further.
Mei Changsu (also known as Lin Shu and Su Zhe because every self-respecting genius strategist needs at least three names to try to carry out a plan to bring justice to the unjustly murdered) and his hotheaded and relentlessly Good former best buddy Prince Xiao Jingyan: I’m not gonna lie. This one here is without a single doubt the ultimate meaningful platonic relationship, and heartbreakingly multi-faceted. On one level, viewers are ever aware that MCS is, in fact, Jingyan’s supposedly-dead beloved best friend, whom Jingyan still grieves even after more than a decade. On the other, he’s a shrewd strategist and advisor trying to help the out-of-favor warrior prince gain power in court. All of these relationships will break your heart and stomp on it. This relationship is the source of probably a good 90% of the Feels in this show. But hooo boy it doesn’t end there! (x)
MCS and General Meng: Despite his martial prowess, General Meng is a genuinely guileless, kind fellow whose friendship with “Mei Changsu” goes way back. The combination of MCS’s shrewdness in service to seeking justice and Meng’s well-meaning kindness is the sweetest. These two are adorable and I love them.
MCS and Fei Liu: Fei Liu is a very young, skilled fighter whose interests are relatively simple but whose love and loyalty for MCS are unmatched. He and MCS are unrelated, but have a relationship much like older brother and younger brother, with an extra layer of sickly scholar and scholar’s young bodyguard.
MCS and Lin Chen: Lin Chen is the ultimate troll. He is highly intelligent and takes no shit but quite enjoys slinging it. He and MCS are a platonic match made in heaven and annoy each other to death. It’s a beautiful friendship, with an added layer of patient and longsuffering doctor. (x)
MCS and the entire Jiangzuo Alliance: Li Gang for best Mom 2KFOREVER. They all love and are exasperated with their leader, MCS, in equal measure. (x)
Some more: General Meng and Fei Liu, Jingyan and Tingsheng, Lin Chen and Fei Liu, Li Gang and Zhen Ping, Yan Yujin and his dad, and so many more.
And this…. this doesn’t even cover all the amazing platonic relationships, only some of the most interesting or prominent ones. Any romance in the show, while present, pales in comparison to the friendships and family bonds. This show will take every Feel you have at your disposal and batter them in the best way.
If you choose to watch, please scream with me. This show is a journey I have taken multiple times, and the plot is so seamless, complex, and intricate that each and every watch brought new information and more pain/awe at how flawlessly the entire story was plotted. Every event has a purpose and ties into the story.
#not spn#nirvana in fire#琅琊榜#lang ya bang#my stuff#*nif#this show i SWEAR#like all those amazing friendships i mentioned and there are still MORE#so many more#that i could yell about#what even#anonymous#semirah replies#*mynif
