I want to offer my own life experience as somewhat relevant, hopefully that's cool. I'm ethically non monogamous, and older so my life experience might be different but maybe some insight is available.

I am demiromantic and I do make the choice to date people without knowing them overly well. In part I think that choice is because I am on the other side of the allosexual spectrum. But also because I like dating to a degree. If I find a person sexually attractive it doesn't mean much (I have embraced my inner thot and she and I are happily skipping through life together holding hands like this is a cartoon), but if a potential date and I are even remotely compatible on the big stuff I screen for we are going to be able to at least be friends and I think friends dates are cool too. I do always tell someone I go out with that I'm demiromantic, because when I was younger that caused a lot of sadness in me and others 💔😔😢, you know, cause timelines and individual emotional realities. And I have had to forcibly teach myself that accepting other people's romantic feelings does not diminish my own validity in how I process romantic and friendship and sexual attraction. Which is not for everyone but it's worked well for me. Now I have a few romantic (28 years and 9 years respectively) or probably going to grow into romantic relationship (we have been getting to know each other and kissin+ for about 3 years and I'm starting to get that high school awkward "oh no. Oh NO. I like like her. Shit what do I do?!" feeling, even though she told me she loved me like two years ago with no implied pressure. But just cause I go out on dates is like a social activities... Like playing karaoke with the ppl at the old folks home sometimes is an activity that I do oh, but being a musician is intrinsic to who I am.

Lately I've been doubting the validity of this part of my identity because I am not sure what the difference is between being demiromantic and only dating after knowing each other is? I'm not sure if it is my projection but I feel like everyone else is demiromantic, so in a way my identity doesn't exist? This frustrates me because I can't put into words the difference between me and an alloromantic person. Any advice please?

Hey! The difference is that when you only date someone you know well, you make a choice to do so, regardless of whether you are attracted to that person before knowing them or not.  On the other hand, demiromantic people do not feel romantic attraction at all toward someone they don’t know well. The difference between demiromantic people and alloromantic people is that allos are perfectly capable of feeling romantically attracted/interested in someone they don’t know well...for example, having a crush on the new student at school (which seems to happen often irl and in dramas) or anyone that you’re not close to.  Demis and allos can make a choice whether or not to date someone they hardly know, but they don’t have much of a choice on being attracted.
