Beifong babies appreciation post

This is gonna be a more self indulgent post. But if you spend any time on my blog, you know how much I adore the Beifong family, particularly Suyin and her children. And you know what I don't see enough appreciation for Suyin's babies, which makes sense, since they're side characters, but here's a lil ramble about them and some reasons why I love them.

Baatar Jr

Actually, I think Baatar is actually a very underutilised character for being Kuvira's supposed right hand man, as well as her fiancé.

He's technically the brains behind Kuvira's collosus, and probably much more.

As damaging as living in his father's shadow was for him, I do find it extremely adorable how he engineered all Baatar Sr's projects, it's really cute!

His loyalty to Kuvira and his love for her is admirable. It's honestly adorable, how much she means to him.

Btw mans stared into Korra's eyes while she threatened him im the Avatar state and laughed. Say what you want about him but he has balls.

The angst surrounding his involvement with Kuvira is absolutely delicious.

Like imagine turning your back on everyone you know and love for one person, only for then to turn on you and try to kill you with upur own creation?

And then everything you've worked for for 3 years is null and void? Gnarly

Also him being under house arrest with the family he betrayed? You could argue he got off really easy, which he did... but goodness gracious the angst.

Huan

I'm like 75% sure that he's a reference to The Dark One, one of Toph's metalbending students, which is actually really fun I love you emo metalbenders.

I always found non combative benders very interesting, especially when they use their bending for things like art, it's very cool.

While I think a Huan's character is made to mock "tortured abstract artists" a bit, he actually isn't terribly caricaturised?

Like... he has a pretty clear ideology and moral compass, and he sticks to his guns, even when threatened. He clearly values personal freedom and freedom of expression, and is willing to stand up for it.

I also love headcanoning that he had a close relationship with Aiwei. Since some of Huan's ideals match up more or less with Red Lotus ideology, which makes me wonder if Aiwei did subtly indoctrinate Suyin's children.

Huan and Ikki's friendship is really cute too lol.

His design is also really cool ngl

Opal

MY BABY AHHH 🧡 honestly my fave female tlok character.

Free her from the heterosexual love interest dimension she deserves so much better lol.

Like, I really dislike Bopal as a ship, and part of it is because of how much of a disservice it does to both characters. But most anti Bopal takes I see are also horrifically anti Opal.

Honestly, Opal just gets a surprisingly large amount of hate in genral? Like why? People call her annoying and a brat/ a knockoff Korra and she's barely done anything lmao

Opal's is very interesting, her journey to independence, her unseen development between B3 and B4, her firece loyalty to her family despite her separation from them

A lot of people criticise her attitude towards Kuvira, but honestly, she was quite rational in her anger? I also think she should have been allowed to hold a grudge against Bolin for longer, like yes he redeemed himswlf somewhat when rescuing her family, but it does feel really shallow and a fast way of tying up a pretty complex storyline.

Her arc reminds me very much of Toph's in atla, which is bittersweet since we see how that ended for Toph.

I love her lil pouty face ahh.

Wei and Wing

Genuinely. Might be my fave underdeveloped side characters.

Avatar has a habit of making very interesting twin duos and these two are no exception.

I really like their strong bond with their mother, they really are the most mamma's boys to ever mamma's boy.

Similarly to Opal, the twins' firece loyalty to their family and city is really sweet, but also there's a lot of potential for angst here. Like, Opal gets to see the world and adventure, but the twins are probably stuck in Zaofu forever.

The twins also are the only ones of their siblings upholding that "Beifong metalbender" archetype that Toph started. I think there is a bit of pressure on them, ad they are the "golden boys" of the family

I'm also a sucker for when benders work together/combine their skills so seeing the twins work together is really sweet.

Also. Gay™️. [Insert longass ramble about weilin lol]

I actually find the small differences in personality between them that we are shown. Where Wei is a bit more snooty and competitive, Wing is very playful and outward with himself. I like picking their differences apart.

1. butterfly taehyung is still by far my fave craziest thing i've ever done. learning to hand-draw animated butterflies was so incredibly rewarding and also my first foray in understanding how photoshop gifs work. plus i just love drawing taehyung so so much

2. pink lemonade hyuck is a big recent fave that kicked of my recent obsession with making white shirts iridescent (see vamp chan & jeonghan) and ofc just the most recent of a long list of haechan drawings that i've done (specifically very partial to this & this hyuck)

3. advice taemin was a big stylistic milestone drawing for me experimenting w a more charcoal-esque style to explore edge control and movement (later followed by bang chan & felix & rm). and also taemin in that outfit was so hot like fr that man is my girl.

4. this painting study of ten after watching his iglive at 4am feels like a fever dream just because i was referencing a real shitty screencap i took but wanted to just show yall how cute he was looking that day

5. yall ofc crackhead xiaojun is on this list </3 i love him and i love these drawings and i think everyone else thinks theyre weird as fuck and that just makes me even happier lmfao. they were so fun bc i didn't have to sweat over likeness and just got to indulge in pretty eyes and mouths and i have an odd penchant towards drawing teeth... i suppose he is my ult for a reason

also special shoutout to the drawings i did for 17daysof17 bc i cannot believe i managed to draw all 13 members in 13 days.... i was unstoppable lmfao

-I have many thoughts on trans lg3… I keep meaning to make content for it but it’s like trying to look directly into the sun. Anyway. So you know how Pb makes Goliad to be an heir and makes her with her baby tooth so Goliad will be biologically related to her and have a claim to the throne? This implies that Lg1 and therefore lg3 are also genetically related to Pb. And secondly you know how when Lemongrab is turned into a more preferable version of himself he has pink skin (like pb and goliad) and eyelashes and looks more feminine to the point where people who haven’t seen the show frequently mistake him for a genderbent version? I think that Lemonpink is what Lemongrab was supposed to look like after going through some sort of puberty, which would make pb’s dna in him kick in and take over. Lemonpink is also his deadname yeah. Very very deep in the Charlie self indulgence universe here but I’m free. 

So Lg3 does sometimes break out in pink patches and plucks his eyelashes when they grow back in. Has to take the candy person equivalent of hrt to keep the transformation at bay. Tesugarone… idk. He is on testogel bc I’m on testogel and I said so and it’s my fannon universe I get to make him a trans man. Also he has smaller hands than Finn and anyway. If Lemongrab not trans… why high voice and wider hips than other male characters? Checkmate. Very important hc to me…

-I think lg3 being a reanimated corpse is not something I milk enough. I like to think he has v subtle psychic powers because of his experience with death giving him some supernatural properties. Like it’s nothing noticeable but he has minor prophetic powers and has prophetic dreams about things. He is mildly telekinetic to the point where he sometimes unlocks or locks his door with his mind without realising. I think it would be funny if he did not realise he had supernatural powers, so it’s all dumb inconvenient stuff like that. Even funnier if lumpy people are also mildly telekinetic so LSP also doesn’t realise this Is Not Normal after years of living with him because she assumed everyone can move glasses and paper around and open doors just by thinking about it. Another personal fave I love thinking about and should make more content for. 

-The reanimated corpse thing also very very sad. Like I imagine Lemongrab deals with a lot of guilt and shame around his body belonging to other people, and feeling it’s not quite his. He’s not allowed to like being in it, because he stole it. Struggles a lot with feeling disconnected and deals with intense dissociation on his worst days. I do hc that Lemongrab would self harm at least a little bit, but he’d feel so awful about it because of this. The only thing he has left of them is the body parts they left him, and he hurt them. 

-lemongrab autism. Like in the show this is quite problematic I feel the need to mention so please do engage critically with the series! 

Anyway. I like to think that Lemongrab would get a diagnosis after he sees Doctor Princess or someone for trauma related therapy and she takes one look at him and goes “certified autist.” I like thinking about Lemongrab’s life finally making sense to him, and him realising he was never a failed experiment or had something wrong with him he was just disabled the whole time. 

-lumpygrab <3 yeah. I loveee thinking about Lemongrab’s thoughts and feelings when they would have just started dating. I wish Lemongrab realising there’s someone out there who loves him unconditionally for who he really is was something we got to see unfolding more in the show. Like I imagine Lemongrab struggled with a lot of insecurity and fear and guilt around his romantic feelings. Would go through periods of extreme highs and intense euphoria over being with someone who he likes and who cares about him followed by guilt over how lg2 died before they could experience anything like this, and fear that he’s never been good enough for anyone before, why should this be any different? He does get better as time goes on though :v) I just feel very soft for the period in his life when he first realised he could be loved despite everything.

coming in straight for the most important thing 😂 here's a snippet for something i'm freewriting for zukaang week. no clue where tf it's going.

Aang mumbles something from where his face is buried in Zuko's pillow.

"What?"

Aang moves his head just enough for his voice to be audible. "I said, do you ever just want to go?"

"Go where?"

"Anywhere. Not here. Somewhere else."

Zuko hasn’t forgotten about the night before, but it's almost as if he doesn't know that he knows until he hears the wistful quality in Aang's voice. "And do what?" he asks. His voice sounds strange to his own ears.

"I don't know. Nap. Swim. Eat a mango." Aang rolls over onto his back and looks over at Zuko.

"We could do all of that right here."

"No," Aang says and lapses into silence.

"You don't want to eat a mango with me?" Zuko asks with mock severity.

"Of course I want to eat a mango with you. I could devour the entire world with you next to me, Zuko."

Zuko laughs—not because it's funny but because the seriousness of Aang's tone is alarming. "Um, what?"

"The whole world," Aang tells him, very seriously.

The others do this sometimes. Make fun of him, but Aang's jokes are rarely so opaque.

"Okay?"

💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?

abso-fucking-lutely not. no research allowed here. if i research, it feels way too much like work, and i am not here for that.

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

oh, man. my oneshot series is the entirety of my answer lol.

but in seriousness, my primary headcanon for the oneshot series is that aang and zuko feel tied together by all the violence they've inflicted on one another, by how they've indulged their darkest impulses one another and by constantly tying their moments of intimacy to moments of danger, so that often, especially in history etched out when zuko redirects the lightning, there's this sense of intense magnetism but also self-destruction in how they express those feelings. for future installments, i want to explore how this could make them weirdly insular in their friendship with one another as they shield those moments they're not proud of (violence towards one another, the self-harm) from their partners and how this spells disaster for their relationships.

1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 7! which is honestly a lot more than i was expecting 

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 19544, which is also way more than i was expecting ngl

3. How many fandoms have you written for? on ao3 ive only published for two fandoms (doctor who and the magnus archives) but i’ve got some wips for critical role stuff and some old mass effect stuff i’d rather not revisit 😬

4. Top 5 fics by kudos? seconds. comes in at number one and is probably one of my fave fics ive written. talks about 12 after escaping from the time dial and his regeneration into 13 and dealing with all of that built up trauma. same with never cruel or cowardly, has lots of callbacks to episodes in hopefully just the right place to break your heart! 

never cruel or cowardly details thirteen’s life after regeneration and specifically dealing with trauma from her experiences right before she regenerated (i.e. time dial, losing and remembering clara, dying on a spaceship etc.)

should have been a TMA fic that goes from martin and jon starting to rebuild their life in the safehouse to then the apocalypse and then the end of the world (written before the finale even aired so its all speculation)

what would you do, to save humanity this was written as an alternative darker ending to Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos bc i figured that episode didn’t have enough angst. 

every star a fic about the doctor and the master’s relationship bc this ship always kind of kills me and i am always kinda thinking about it. about how they are so very, very alike. two sides of the same coin.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why/why not? ahhh unfortunately i generally dont - partially i get rly stressed about responding “the right way” but also i like seeing the little notification of unread messages! nice reminder that ppl comment on my fics! but also sometimes i do just forget and feel rly awkward. just know if you comment on my fic i literally owe my entire life to you 

6. A fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? ah man the tma fic ends in their combined death so theres that? the thoschei fic is... well.. i mean, yknow. a thoschei fic. none of them end particularly ‘well’ tho i think.

15. Writing strengths? i’d like to think im pretty good at descriptions and like, idk what to call it but like the vaguely meta-ish stuff, references to past eps and kinda like “poetic” language describing stuff?

16. Writing weaknesses? i cannot write dialogue to save my life. tbh both in real life and in fic

17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? see above. but also i think i’d be fine with it, at least in short bursts. if there’s ever a character that speaks ukrainian i’d be super down to write some of their dialogue in ukrainian in a fic but alas :(

First fandom you wrote for? definitely doctor who! i wrote a fic when i was like, 13? or smth and had just started watching the show and it was the most self indulgent thing ever but it was all about the doctor coming to pick up random teenagers from around the world and bring them onto the tardis in this big camp-like sleepover. i absolutely loved thinking abt that fic 

19. What’s your fav fic you’ve written so far? hmm i like pyrite a lot bc its more ~experimental~ than ive written before. but i also have to say seconds. bc it introduced me to @yesokayiknow & then suddenly 2 yrs later had a bunch more dw friends! cool times
