Rewatching lazarus rising as one does,,, and holy shit the fact that this was misha collins portraying castiel for the very first time, that he was on as a GUEST STAR for a show that had been running for yearss, and he came in with his big blue eyes and gave THAT performance!!! Like no fucking wonder we bullied them into making him a series regular. Every fucking time I watch this episode I am so thrown by even the smallest tilts of his head,,, truly suchh a talented actor

Cas really read dean to filth within an inch of his LIFE three (3) minutes after meeting him (What's the matter? You don't think you deserve to be saved?), threatened him the very next time he saw him (You should show me some respect. I'm the one who dragged you out of hell. I can throw you back in.), then the time after that overshared about being a good little soldier (Can I tell you something if you promise not to tell another soul? I'm not a... hammer, as you say. I have questions. I have doubts)
absolutely insane writing from the destiel show

It's true that we sometimes mimic people we admire, or we take on the style of someone we want to like us, or even that we get inspired to be better people by love interests who give us new things to hope for...
But in some case, we unconsciously mimic people we feel connected to, that we feel more alike.
Jack sensed Dean's raw fear, his primal emotions, and despite everything that was going on in his life (humans considering him a threat, angels trying to kidnap him, demons trying to kidnap him, Princes of Hell wanting to use him to open monster worlds)...
...Dean is who he chose to emulate.
While Jack modeled his "look" on Cas, I think he's subconsciously drawn to Dean because he IS like him (emotionally). It's not forced. It's not an act. It just is.

Dean senses this too. It's why the initial "you don't think I can be saved."

found this thing lying around on the internet and decided to redraw it because of course I did. I actually saw it a couple days before I saw this post but the post made me realize I had to recreate it to get my brain to shut up about it so
Tumblr media
(for comparison purposes)
Tumblr media
tried something new with the background and attempted to blur Dean and Cas a little to show that they're further in the background and I don't think it really came out quite right but ehhh. also ignore the random...chair?? in the lower right corner (the random brown thing) idk the original picture had it so I added it in but it just looks like a weird rug 💀
but yeah. consider the show described and illustrated ig @drulalovescas

cas developing a music taste of his own and even if half the music is dean influenced music the other half isn't and you best believe that even if it's not his usual stuff dean sneakily starts adding cas' favourite songs to his own playlist for when they listen to music together

June 9th, prompt: Cowboy Boots
"Come on out, Cas!"
"Do I really have to?"
Cas' grumbled reply was muffled by the closed bathroom door between them.
"What? You sayin' you don't like the gift I got you? Don't be a baby, lemme see!"
The door opened, and out came Cas, visibly grumpy Angel of the Lord, dressed in his usual shirt and pants and- Dean's mouth fucking watered at the sight - a pair of brand new cowboy boots.
"I look ridiculous", Cas stated, squinting down at his feet in affront.
"You look-" Dean swallowed. Hot as Hell.
He could see the moment Cas picked up on the way Dean was staring at him, the tiniest of smiles forming at the corner of the angel's mouth and softening the annoyed crease in his brow.
Cas gave him a fond eye-roll, sighing theatrically.
"The things I do for love", he muttered, making Dean grin.
"Alright, Jaime Lannister." Dean crossed the distance between them, arms circling around Cas' waist. "Whine all you like, but those stay on."

obsessing about michael holing up in a body that is not his own in a dark church and dean folding in on himself every time and neither of them doing anything until prompted with a way for revenge or to get them back

Another The French Mistake type of episode but we see how unwell Jensen is about Dean and that fucking scares Dean. And oh boy, I'm sure it would be a hilarious episode.

I have a meta somewhere I REALLY like about how... Cas is actually off working a lot, even with regards to Jack.
Cas's the motif of the overworked dad--the drained dad (*cough* finale I hate you for this one*). Etc etc. The "He never sleeps unless he's dying," motif of dads. Cas is almost never shown in pajamas, and I think it's not just because he's an angel character...
And like, hmmm, I THINK it's maybe in the beginning of season 14, but when Jack gets sick, he wants to spend time with Cas instead of revealing his illness. The implication is that he hasn't actually spent a lot of time with Cas up to this point.
He doesn't want to "jeopardize the opportunity"... to spend time with Cas!
EDIT:
Yeah! It was 14x03
The sketch of the episode had Cas appraising his hunting skills and field-readiness, a military-minded approach that ended up getting softened in the aired version by Cas making Jack soup to help with his "cold":
Early story arena:

//

Note// In the brainstormed version, Jack also fits in better than expected with the "rebellious Kansas teenagers," (if he fit it with anyone, tbf, it WOULD be the rebellious weirdos). Here, Jack is indeed a full-on "heart" character who even attracts the attention of a girl.

Outline:

///
Script:
Tumblr media
Jack is moved by this kind of praise from Cas, specifically. After all, Cas is one of the people he takes vital protectorship cues from.
//
Tumblr media
And like so. There’s disaster after disaster, Jack runs away in Tombstone… and then Apocalypse World. Jack has spent a lot of time with Mary and AU Bobby!
Then Dean-Cas at the end of season 13…
But not a lot!

I guess I can't really get behind cas saving dean from hell as a destiel win, or lines like 'you don't think you deserve to be saved', because. this is not a point at which cas is doing because he believes dean is good and loves him or anything but. he saves dean because that's heaven's will. when he reminds dean that cas, and heaven, are who saved him in early s4, it's not him really saying 'you're a good man', it's a debt that he is using, pretty explicitly, to get dean to do what heaven wants. even the handprint reads like... ownership, in a way.
cas is complicit in heaven's manipulation of dean after he's pulled out of hell. that's what makes his rebellion later powerful, because this is an angel who believes in heaven so strongly that he will look into the eyes of the righteous man he saved and tell him that if he doesn't do what he's told, he will throw dean back into hell.
