honestly I think a big part of why I love bitb so much is that it’s such a unique addition to the jrwi library. you can make aus where the riptide pirates are godslayers or the prime defenders are pirates, but putting the characters of other campaigns in the universe of bitb doesn’t really work because it’s so isolated genre wise — think how in one pd rolled, they discussed how a horror episode using coc wouldn’t work because dakota and on some level vyncent just wouldn’t translate into horror protagonists. vice versa is also iffy because the bayou trio are very defined by how powerless and human they are. it’s fully horror and that’s what makes it stand out

While I agree that Newt can be overhyped, I think his character is tragic with or without a good appearance. In the books his death was equally devastating, and we only know his description as a muscular guy with a mullet. Mostly I think it comes down to his tragic story, and his deep connection with Thomas. That’s what makes his death so impactful. Also the Frypan’s death would have been less impactful argument isn’t necessarily true, considering he’s also a conventionally attractive male. (Then and now!)

All of the main cast is conventionally attractive (Y/A dystopias am I right?) If anything there’s something to be said about Frypan, Winston, Alby and Minho not getting the same amount of hype and love that Thomas, Gally, And Newt receive because they are (at least in the movies,) all played by white actors.

the over-hyping of Newt

I sometimes think that Newt's death is over-hyped (is that the right term?) because he's a conventionally attractive male, like if someone like Frypan for example died the same way, or if Newt wasn't played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, would the fandom still be as distraught?

I mostly think this because of how many Newt fans I've encountered that solely like him because he's 'hot' and are ready to jump anyone who says they won't lay down their lives for him. I've seen so many posts of people feining over him, not because they like his character, but because they want to bang him

Like it was a sad scene don't get me wrong, but would people care about it as much if a different actor was casted? I know it's hard to imagine but it's always been something in the back of my brain

I love Newt as a character, he contributes a lot of the story and plays a pretty big role, but I feel a lot of him gets squished into such a tiny box and he isn't examined enough
