Since I'm busy working on a valentines day drawing I thought we could do something different until I'm done with that. Trivia night! I'll be writing what's basically a compilation of fun facts we've already established or haven't learned yet. We will also learn more about their backstories.
For tonight we have Silas
Silas has a mom and dad but isn't close with neither of them
As a child he was quite needy compared to other elven kids
Elves almost never stray too far away from the elven village but Silas liked to play in the depths of the forest
He learned about humans from a story book he found while playing in the forest
He was amazed by the colorful imagery and the familial relationship depicted in the book and wanted to have the same, which kickstarted his human hyperfixation
He's currently the most knowledgeable elf in humans within the village
His house is located quite far away from the village, he can still reach there by walking but it's not somewhere where the other elves can just stumble upon
He likes sweet things like fruits or honey but dislikes the taste of meat so doesn't feed it to you much as well
He, just like the other elves, while natural with most other living things, hates all demonic creatures
He's very nice and sweet with you but wouldn't glance twice at other forest creatures and is actively hostile towards demons
Of course he would never let you see him make that kind of face
He thought of using magic to make you live as long as he does but it feels like tempering with your humanity so if you die he's planning to die with you
He's actually not that good at magic compared to other elves, he just knows the basics and relies on books for the rest
He's average height for an elf
He doesn't like leaving bite marks or hickeys on your body because it feels like dirtying your perfect form
But he really likes it when you mark his skin, whether they are hickeys or wounds
While more compassionate than other elves, Silas does have a bit of a superiority complex like them
For example, unlike other elves he does see the intelligence of humans but would still say elves are smarter
He doesn't have any ill intentions with it, to him it's just like saying a unicorn is be better than a horse
He doesn't like eating carrots because he thinks they look like elf ears
He loves learning more about you but dislikes hearing about your family
He doesn't want you to have pets, only the two of you are allowed inside his house
He does have a bathroom in his house but it's just a replica of what he saw in books and isn't actually that functional
If you want to use the bathroom for your baths instead of the river like he does, he just carries the water from the river to his house then uses magic to make it rain on you like a shower head
Even if you don't allow him inside the bathroom he still watches from the window
He has a diary where he writes everything you do in a day, from what activities you did to how many times you blink on average
If you offered to live in a human city with him he would refuse, while he likes humans you are his utmost priority and it's better for you to be inside his house away from everyone's reach

Part what contributed to this belief for me was the canon of "classics" being largely decided upon by white male academics. There are some classics that (imo) are overrated, alienating to most modern audiences, and have aged like milk (i'm looking heart of darkness right in its two stupid eyes). This is not true of every classic, and for the most part theres something in these books that make us want to keep reading them, but when people are told repeatedly that their voices and experiences simply don't make good literature, i don't blame them for believing it and wanting to steer clear.
Even if it WAS true that YA readers, who are too often scapegoated as lowbrow, unintelligent, and incurious consumers, just don't want to read classics because they think they're stuffy, then academia has NOT helped this belief. When you worship the divide between "high" art and "low" art and lock certain people out of the conversation, you're basically inviting people to think your picks for great art are inaccessible, because youve MADE them that way. Maybe this amorphous group of "uncultured" romance fans aren't picking up Robinson Crusoe, but theyre sure as hell reading (and watching) Austen ripoffs, and ive seen many have absolutely zero hesitstion reading Austen herself. Could it be a group of readers mostly made up of mostly young/middle aged women want to read about themselves instead of some guy's colonization fantasy? most likely!
There are also SO many class stereotypes wrapped up in what people do and don't read and why they do and don't read it. It used to be that the only people who COULD read were people with the time and money to learn how. Just because more people are literate and have access to books nowadays does not make that long history of elitism go away. The sooner the idea that YA romance is any less stimulating or well written than other kinds of lit goes away, the sooner the idea that Classics are all stuffy and out of touch will go away too!
Not to be a pretentious asshole but yes there is a problem with people no longer reading the classics. A lot of the YA literature romance novel crowd perpetuates the myth that the classics are inherently boring and stuffy and there’s nothing you can relate to or learn by reading them. And they’re not. These beautiful universal things we enjoy, comedy, romance, tragedy, family strife, they’re still so poignant centuries after they’re written.

hi lovely!! i had a random idea for a fic where reader is harry’s kindergarten teacher and he lets it slip to you that single dad james thinks she’s pretty? im just imaging a little 5 year old letting that information slip like it’s the most casual thing in the world and meanwhile james is dying of embarrassment hahahha. i just thought it would be cute :)
— This idea is so cute! Thanks for sharing with me, hope you like it! @iloveremmy
secret crush | james potter
pairing: james potter x muggle!reader
summary: dad!james is definitely ready to love again after some time, he just didn't think it would be harry's kindergarten teacher.
obs: feel free to send any requests!
masterlist
The small classroom was filled with laughter, crayons, and the chaotic energy only a group of five-year-olds could create. The walls were covered in colorful drawings, some resembling actual objects and others looking more like abstract masterpieces only a parent could pretend to understand.
At the front of the room stood y/n, the most beloved teacher in the entire kindergarten. She had a natural warmth about her, making every child feel special. She was also quick-witted and funny, always finding a way to make the most mundane things exciting. Her students adored her.
And at the center of it all, sitting on one of the tiny chairs like he was some kind of prince, was Harry Potter.
Harry was an interesting child—smart, playful, and with a sass level that could rival a teenager. He had a mop of messy black hair that never seemed to stay put, big green eyes that sparkled with mischief, and a personality far too charming for a five-year-old.
He had been extra sassy today, insisting he was "way too advanced" for their ABC exercises and that "Uncle Moony reads him much harder books." You had learned by now to just nod along when Harry said bizarre things like that.
You had taken a particular liking to him. Not that you played favorites (at least, not openly), but something about Harry made you want to protect him even more than the other kids. Maybe it was the fact that he was being raised by a single dad, or maybe it was the way he always looked at you with that cheeky little grin whenever he was about to say something absurd.
Right now, that cheeky grin was in full force.
"Miss y/l/n," Harry said, swinging his legs under the table as he colored.
"Yes, love?" you replied, crouching down to his level.
He leaned in as if he was about to share the most confidential secret of his life. "My dad thinks you're pretty."
You blinked.
Oh.
Oh!
You opened your mouth to respond, but Harry, apparently very pleased with himself, continued. "He says you're too young to have this many kids"
Well, you definitely held back the laughter, but as you didn't have an answer to that, you just changed subjects. You leaned over to glance at Harry’s drawing. It was a messy but clearly heartfelt attempt at a stick figure version of himself and his dad, complete with what looked like… a broomstick?
“That’s a great drawing, Harry!” you praised, ruffling his hair. “Is that you and your dad?”
Harry nodded, proudly holding up his masterpiece. “Yeah! That’s me, and that’s Daddy, and he’s flying really fast on his broom because he’s the best at Quidditch!”
Let's say Harry Potter was a really imaginative kid. He would always say some really funny stories about witches and sometimes, he would full on create new words. Like he was just doing now. You found it cute, but little did you know that it was actually all true.
You grinned. “I bet he is.”
Harry’s little legs swung as he beamed. “Yeah! And he says he used to be the best Seeker at Hogwarts! I wanna be like him when I grow up!”
“That’s a great dream,” you said, genuinely warmed by how much Harry admired his father.
James was tall, lean, and had the same messy hair as his son. He was dressed casually, but there was something effortlessly charming about him. And then there were his eyes—warm, hazel, and currently widening in horror as he realized what his son was in the middle of saying.
"And my dad also said—oh, hey, Dad!" Harry greeted, as if he hadn’t just delivered a verbal nuke seconds before.
James, who had clearly heard enough, looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him whole. "Harry," he started, his voice a little strained, "what exactly have you been telling Miss y/l/n?"
Harry, completely unfazed, gestured at his teacher. "I was just telling her how you think she's pretty."
You had to bite the inside of your cheek to keep from laughing. You found it cute how a grown man was becoming all flustered right now.
“I mean—” James rubbed the back of his neck. “I might have said something along the lines of you being… you know… a good teacher.”
Harry frowned. “No, you didn’t.”
James glared at his son. A warning look. A look that screamed drop it, drop it now, child.
Harry, of course, did not drop it.
James let out an awkward, nervous laugh, running a hand through his already messy hair. "Yeah, um, I don't know where he got that from—"
"You said it last night," Harry reminded him. "When you were talking to Uncle Pads and you said—"
"Okay, that's enough, kiddo!" James cut in quickly, picking up Harry like he was a sack of potatoes. His face was an interesting shade of pink now. "Time to go, say goodbye to your teacher!"
Harry, enjoying this far too much, gave you a knowing look before waving. "Bye, Miss! See you tomorrow! Oh, and it's okay! My dad only likes you a little bit."
James groaned. "Oh, for Merlin's sake—"
You, to your credit, simply gave James a bright, amused smile. "It’s fine. Kids say the funniest things."
James, still trying to compose himself, let out a breath. "Yeah. They do."
You tilted your head, studying him for a second. "Though, I have to say, you do have a very smart kid. And very honest."
James gave you a sheepish smile. "Yeah… unfortunately, he gets that from his mother."
There was a flicker of something in his eyes—something sad, something that made you instinctively soften your tone. "She must've been wonderful."
James nodded. "Yeah. She really was."
For a moment, there was a comfortable silence between them. Then, because James couldn't handle any more embarrassment today, he awkwardly cleared his throat. "Right. Well. We'll be going now. Before Harry decides to share my entire life story."
You grinned. "That’s probably a good idea. Have a good evening, Harry. James."
James hesitated for half a second, then nodded. "You too."
As he walked out, still carrying a smug-looking Harry, you couldn't help but shake your head, laughing quietly to yourself.
James Potter, huh?
This was going to be interesting.
As soon as they were outside, James crouched down and gave Harry a look of pure exasperation. “Alright, Prongslet. Why?”
Harry just grinned up at him, utterly unapologetic. “I like Miss y/n. You like Miss y/n. Uncle Padfoot said you should talk to her more. I was helping.”
James dropped his head in his hands. “You and Sirius are banned from talking to each other ever again.”
The aftermath
James Potter was dying.
Not literally—he had survived multiple Quidditch accidents, a war, and Voldemort himself—but right now, standing outside of Harry’s kindergarten classroom, he was convinced that actual death would be less painful than the secondhand embarrassment he had just experienced.
His five-year-old son, his sweet, traitorous, utterly clueless son, had just casually exposed his very real, very secret crush on Miss y/n.
He was never showing his face in that classroom again.
…Okay, that was a lie.
He’d be back tomorrow.
And the next day.
And the day after that.
Because Harry loved school, and James definitely wasn’t going to pull him out just because he got caught being a pathetic twenty-five-year-old with a schoolboy crush on his kid’s teacher.
But, Merlin’s beard, how was he supposed to look you in the eyes again?
But instead, he found himself standing there like an idiot, because—screw it—he wasn’t actually opposed to talking to you.
At first, James had been mortified, barely able to meet your eyes when he picked up his son. But as the days went by, he found himself lingering a little longer each time. It started small—asking how Harry was doing, if he was behaving (spoiler: he wasn’t), and if he was making friends.
But then your conversations stretched longer.
“So, uh,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck, “I actually wanted to talk to you about Harry.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
James nodded, trying to look serious. “Yeah. His, uh… behavior.”
You blinked, looking at Harry, who was currently playing with another student and doing absolutely nothing wrong.
“…His behavior?” you echoed.
James cleared his throat. “Yes. It’s, uh, very concerning.”
You folded your arms, clearly humoring him. “What exactly is concerning about it?”
James hesitated. “Well. You know. The talking thing.”
You bit your lip, trying not to laugh. “The talking thing?”
James sighed, knowing you weren’t buying it. “Yeah. You know. The way he just… talks. No filter. Says things. About me.”
You did laugh then, shaking your head. “James, you do realize that’s completely normal for his age, right?”
James groaned. “I was hoping you’d say there was a cure.”
You grinned. “Afraid not.”
James huffed, but there was a smile playing at his lips now. “Brilliant. Well, at least tell me—how do I make sure he doesn’t casually ruin my life every time he opens his mouth?”
You shrugged. “Sorry, but I think you’re doomed.”
James sighed dramatically. “That’s what I thought.” He glanced at Harry again, who was still happily playing, then looked back at you. “Well, I guess I should be glad he didn’t say anything too bad.”
You smirked. “Oh, no, just that you think I’m really pretty and smile a lot when you talk about me.”
James groaned. “Merlin’s sake, why would you repeat it?”
You laughed. “Because it’s funny.”
James shot her a look. “For you, maybe.”
You tilted your head, grinning. “Oh, come on, James. It’s not that bad.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You do realize that I’m going to be forced to relocate and change my name now, right?”
You snorted. “Is that so?”
“Yes,” James deadpanned. “I’ll be John Smith from now on. You’ve never met me before in your life.”
You shook your head, still laughing. “Well, John Smith, if it makes you feel any better…” you hesitated for a second, then shrugged, your voice softer. “I don’t mind what Harry said.”
James froze.
Your eyes were warm, teasing but also… something else.
And suddenly, James realized—maybe this wasn’t as embarrassing as he thought.
Maybe Harry had just given him the best excuse in the world to talk to the woman he’d been secretly crushing on.
And maybe—just maybe—he was okay with that.
For the first time that day, James grinned.
“Well then,” he said. “In that case, I think I can survive the humiliation.”
You chuckled. “Glad to hear it.”
From that day forward, James’s routine of picking Harry up from school became a little different.
At first, he told himself he was just being polite—nothing wrong with staying an extra minute or two to talk to Harry’s teacher, right? Totally normal. Every parent did that.
Except every time, those one or two minutes stretched longer.
And longer.
Until one day, he realized he was actively looking forward to pick-up time—not just to see Harry, but because he’d get to talk to you.
Getting to know each other
James had fully intended to keep his distance after the Incident—as he now called it in his head. He had absolutely not planned to linger when picking up Harry, nor did he intend to talk to you for longer than necessary. But that's not exactly what happened since they had been talking a lot lately.
"Everything good today?" James would ask, standing at the doorway.
"Harry was a little sassy during storytime," you would say, amused. "He insisted he already knew how it ended and started narrating over me."
James sighed, rubbing his temple. "Of course, he did. Did he at least get it right?"
"Surprisingly, yes," you said. "Honestly, he’s way too smart for a five-year-old."
James smirked. "He gets it from me, obviously."
"Oh, obviously," you teased, raising an eyebrow.
And then, the next day…
"Harry told me today that he was going to ‘summon his broom’ to get out of naptime."
James coughed. "Uh. Kids have wild imaginations, don’t they?"
"Mhm," you said, amused. "Though, I have to say, that’s a very specific thing to imagine."
James quickly changed the subject.
And then, the next day after that...
He found himself lingering near your desk, watching Harry shove his tiny arms into his backpack with all the grace of a rampaging hippogriff.
“So,” James started, leaning against the desk, “should I be worried about his academic future, or is struggling with backpack logistics a phase?”
You grinned. “Don’t worry, it’s a phase. I think.”
James sighed dramatically. “Merlin’s sake, that’s a relief. I was beginning to think I’d have to enroll him in some kind of Backpack Etiquette for Beginners course.”
You chuckled. “Well, I do give him stickers when he remembers to pack up neatly.”
James blinked. “That’s brilliant.”
You shrugged, smirking. “Bribery works wonders at this age.”
James laughed. “Noted.”
And just like that, their conversation stretched past the usual parent-teacher exchange.
James found himself not in a rush to leave.
You didn’t seem to mind.
And Harry, for once, didn’t interrupt with any more mortifying revelations.
A win for James.
A week later, James arrived earlier than usual and found you organizing a small shelf of children’s books.
“Expanding their literary horizons?” he asked, stepping closer.
You looked up, smiling. “Trying to. Some of them are still convinced books are just really boring building blocks.”
James smirked. “Ah, yes. The tragic underappreciation of literature.”
You chuckled. “Exactly.” you tilted your head. “Did you like reading when you were a kid?”
James shrugged. “I liked it. But I wasn’t the sit-quietly-and-read type. That was Remus.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Remus?”
“My best mate,” James explained. “Loves books. Absolute nightmare when you try to pull him away from one.”
You grinned. “Sounds like the kind of student I’d love to have.”
“Oh, absolutely,” James said. “Meanwhile, I was the kid causing problems in the back of the class.”
You pretended to gasp. “You? Causing trouble? I would never have guessed.”
James smirked. “Shocking, I know.”
You fell into easy conversation after that, sharing stories about school, books, and the different kinds of students you had over the years.
James barely noticed the time passing.
Neither did you.
"Alright, I have to ask," you said one day, arms crossed as you leaned against the doorway. "What’s up with Harry and the ‘Uncles’?"
James blinked. "What do you mean?"
"He talks about Uncle Padfoot and Uncle Moony constantly," you said. "Are they even real people?" you said, knowing that those names were definitely not usual. Maybe they were imaginary friends.
James tried not to laugh, he couldn't explain it to you in a detailed way, you were a Muggle after all. "Padfoot and Moony are my best mates. They are very real. It's just their nicknames. Padfoot is Sirius, Moony is Remus."
You smiled, trying to understand why they were even called that. "I swear, sometimes Harry sounds like a tiny old man when he quotes them."
James laughed. "That… yeah, that tracks. They’ve been around his whole life."
You smirked. "So, which one gives the worst advice?"
"Oh, definitely Sirius," James said immediately. "He told Harry once that he could read his mind and my poor kid spent the rest of the week scared to think"
You burst out laughing. "That’s terrible!"
"I know!" James said, grinning. "Remus had to be the voice of reason that day, convincing Harry that his uncle couldn't read his mind"
The small talk everyday was becoming a habit.
James would ask about your day, and you would roll your eyes and dramatically recount whatever chaos had ensued in your classroom—kids throwing crayons, glue disasters, the occasional crying over absolutely nothing. You were expressive, funny, and had this energy that James found… comforting.
You, in turn, asked about James—not just about Harry but about him. His work, his hobbies, things he liked. And James found himself telling you, actually enjoying your chats instead of awkwardly stumbling over his words like he thought he would.
But, of course, Harry noticed.
"Dad," Harry groaned one afternoon as James leaned against the classroom doorway, chatting away with you while other parents picked up their kids. "You’re doing it again."
James blinked down at his son. "Doing what, Prongslet?"
Harry huffed dramatically, grabbing his tiny backpack. "Talking and talking and talking."
You burst into laughter. "Oh no, Potter, you’ve been caught."
James narrowed his eyes at his son. "Maybe I like talking to your teacher, kiddo."
Harry groaned even louder, stomping toward the door. "Ugh, come on! We're always the last ones now!"
You laughed, nudging Harry’s nose playfully. "Oh, come on, am I that bad?"
Harry sighed dramatically. "No, but Daddy talks to you too much."
James cleared his throat. "Well, I just—y’know—parent stuff. Making sure you’re doing okay."
Harry squinted at him. "Uh-huh. Sure, Dad."
You smirked. "Guess I must be very interesting, huh?"
James ran a hand through his hair, looking away. "Uh… yeah. I mean, no—I mean—"
You just chuckled and waved at Harry. "See you tomorrow, little tornado."
Harry grumbled something under his breath about adults being annoying and led the way out.
James followed, but not before sneaking one last glance at you.
Getting some advice (from the professionals)
By the time a couple of weeks had passed, James knew he had to do something.
Because this? This standing-in-the-doorway-every-day-for-way-too-long thing? This was not normal behavior. He wasn’t just talking to you about Harry anymore. He liked talking to you, period.
And that? That was terrifying.
You were the first person he’d felt anything for since Lily. It wasn’t the same—Lily had been his great, big, all-consuming love. But you? You were warmth, laughter, easy conversations, and teasing smiles. And that was something.
Which meant he was going to do the scariest thing he’d done since facing off against Voldemort.
He was going to ask you out.
Sirius and Remus, of course, had opinions.
"You just gotta charm her, Prongs," Sirius said confidently, lounging on James' couch. "Lay it on thick—tell her she’s the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen, maybe throw in a ‘your eyes shine brighter than the stars’—"
Remus snorted from his chair. "Yes, James. Do that. That definitely won’t make her think you’re a lunatic."
Sirius furrowed his brows at his boyfriend "Hey! I think it worked wonders when i charmed you to like me"
Remus gave him a look "When did exactly you charmed me, pads?"
Sirius was quick to answer "Second year, of course, and it worked!"
Remus was trying not to laugh "Do you actually know that it didn't work, i just liked you back?"
Before Sirius could even snap back, his face surprised, James groaned, dropping his head into his hands. "I don’t need to charm her. I just… need to not make a fool of myself."
Sirius smirked. "Well, that’s impossible. But, hey, shoot your shot."
James was pacing his living room, gripping his hair. "I can’t do it. I can’t do it."
Sirius was looking deeply amused. "You, the James Potter, too scared to ask a woman out? This is history in the making."
Remus, sitting in an armchair, gave a long-suffering sigh. "James, it’s just coffee."
"Just coffee? Moony, I haven’t dated since Lily!" James threw his hands up. "What if she says no? What if she thinks I’m a terrible father for even thinking about dating?"
"Mate," Sirius said, sitting up. "I promise you, the last thing she’s thinking is that you’re a terrible father. She likes you."
James scoffed. "She doesn’t like me."
Sirius smirked. "Oh, yeah? Then why does she always smile at you? And laugh at your terrible dad jokes? And talk to you for an eternity?"
"That’s just—she’s nice!" James insisted.
Remus gave him a knowing look. "James. Just ask her."
James groaned. "Fine. But if I make an idiot of myself, I’m blaming both of you."
He was really going to ask you out.
Taking actions
It was a Friday afternoon. James had spent the entire day hyping himself up. This was it. No more standing around like an idiot. No more pretending he was just talking about Harry.
He was going to ask you out. Casually. Coolly. Like a totally normal, smooth person.
(He was absolutely not smooth.)
"Hey, y/n," James started as he leaned on the doorway of the classroom, trying to look relaxed.
You, who was organizing a chaotic pile of paper, looked up and smiled. "Hey, Potter. You’re right on time for the usual end-of-the-day complaints from your son."
Harry, currently sulking with his backpack, threw up his hands. "They played ring around the rosie today! Do you know how boring that is?!"
You laughed. "What, not exciting enough for you?"
"No!"
James smirked. "That’s tragic, mate."
Harry crossed his arms. "Can we go now or are you gonna talk for twenty years again?"
James cleared his throat. Now or never.
"Actually," he said, looking at you, "I was wondering if you wanted to grab a coffee sometime."
You blinked. "What?"
James internally panicked. "Casual coffee. Like—like two people, drinking coffee, talking, existing in the same space—"
You raised an amused eyebrow. "Are you asking me out?"
James wanted to die. "I—I mean—yeah? But, like, you don’t have to—"
You grinned. "James."
He swallowed. "Yeah?"
"I’d love to."
James froze. "Wait. What?"
You smirked. "I said yes, Potter. You good?"
James stared at you, processing, before a slow grin spread across his face. "Oh. Well. That’s… good. That’s great. That’s—"
Harry groaned. "Finally!"
James turned to him. "Oh, what now?!"
Harry threw his hands up. "It took you forever to ask her! I thought you were never gonna do it!"
You laughed. "Seriously?"
James groaned. "Can’t anything be a secret in this family?"
You just smirked. "Apparently not."
James, still grinning, nodded. "Alright then. Coffee it is."
And for the first time in a long time, James felt something that wasn’t just surviving. He felt happy.

TERRAPIN;
pairing: caitlyn kiramman x fem!reader
synopsis: what's a better day than cuddling up to your girlfriend and playing games while she reads?
VERY short. sorry. I have many completed drafts for cait and even ellie so ill be posting them very fast. But PLEASE feel free to share your ideas in my reqs. I'm more than happy to comply. smut might take a while bec I'm not very efficient when it comes to that. Still it's open for reqs!!
The evening settles around you like a soft blanket, the kind Caitlyn always drapes over your shoulders when she thinks you’re too cold. The warm glow of the bedside lamp paints the room in amber hues, contrasting with the cooler, bluish light of your phone screen. Caitlyn’s beside you, sitting up against the headboard, one hand holding a book open while the other absentmindedly strokes your hair.
You’re curled up against her side, legs tangled with hers, head resting against her shoulder as you tap away at your game. The soft rustle of pages turning blends with the faint, rhythmic sounds of your gameplay. It’s a comfortable quiet, the kind you’ve come to cherish with her.
"You're frowning," Caitlyn murmurs, her voice gentle, her lips barely brushing your forehead as she speaks.
You huff, still focused on the screen. "This boss is annoying."
She chuckles, low and affectionate. "Is it one of those fights where you’re being stubborn instead of playing smart?"
You lift your head to give her an exaggerated glare, and she meets it with an amused, knowing smile. "You don’t know that," you grumble.
"I do," she teases, shifting slightly so she can kiss the top of your head. "You get that look when you're too deep in your pride to back down."
You sigh dramatically but don’t argue. She’s right, after all. Instead, you let your phone drop onto your stomach and lean further into her warmth. "What’re you reading?"
Caitlyn tilts the book slightly so you can see. "It’s a reread," she says. "One of my comfort books."
You don’t recognize the title, but it doesn’t matter. You like the way she talks about books, the way she gets this quiet reverence when she loves a story. You press your cheek against her shoulder, letting your eyes drift over the words even if you aren’t really following.
"Read to me?" you ask softly.
She hesitates, just for a second. Then, with a slight smile, she shifts the book, her voice slipping into a low, soothing cadence as she begins. You close your eyes, letting her words wash over you, warm and familiar like waves against the shore.
Minutes pass, or maybe longer—you lose track of time in the steady rhythm of her voice and the steady rise and fall of her chest beneath you. When she pauses to turn the page, you take the opportunity to press a kiss against her collarbone.
She hums in approval, the sound vibrating against your lips. "Distracted already?"
"Mm, not my fault," you murmur, pressing another kiss, this time against her jaw. She tilts her head slightly, giving you more room, and you take full advantage, trailing kisses up to the corner of her mouth.
Caitlyn catches your chin between her fingers, tilting your face up to look at her. Her expression is soft, eyes half-lidded with quiet amusement and something deeper, something warm. "You're beautiful."
You grin. "So are you."
Caitlyn sighs, but it's a fond one, her thumb brushing over your lower lip before she finally leans down to kiss you properly. Her lips are soft, slow, unhurried—like she has all the time in the world to savor this. And maybe she does. Maybe you both do.
When she pulls away, she lets her forehead rest against yours for a moment before nudging you lightly. "I thought you were fighting an annoying boss."
You groan, flopping back against her side dramatically. "Ugh, don’t remind me."
She laughs, and you feel it in the way her chest moves against you, the way her fingers tighten slightly in your hair. "Come on," she says, reaching for your phone and placing it back in your hands. "I’ll hold you while you finish. No rage-quitting, though."
You grumble but settle back in, her arms wrapping around you as you refocus on the game. The warmth of her, the steady thrum of her heartbeat, the occasional soft kiss she presses against your temple—it all makes the fight a little easier, the loss a little less frustrating.
And when you finally win, she praises you like you’ve just conquered something monumental, her voice full of pride, her hands cupping your face as she kisses you again.
"See?" she murmurs against your lips. "Told you you’d get it."
You sigh contentedly, letting your phone slip from your fingers as you curl into her once more. "You’re so smug."
"I’m always right," Caitlyn corrects playfully, pulling the blanket tighter around both of you.
You roll your eyes but don't argue. Instead, you nestle closer, pressing your face against the crook of her neck. "Read to me again?"
Caitlyn smiles against your hair, her voice softer this time, carrying you both into the kind of quiet that lingers, warm and safe and full of love.

A Heart Like That- A Joel Miller x f!reader one shot
Pairing: Joel Miller x f!reader Rating: E/ 18+ MDNI WC: 2.7k
Summary: I really wanted to write a Joel Miller Valentine’s Day story, but couldn’t decide between naughty or nice so I wrote both.
Tags: No Outbreak!AU, established relationship, Joel Miller x f!reader, unprotected PIV, oral sex (f receiving) pet names (darlin’, sugar, baby) soft!Joel for days, fluff & gentle sex. A little bit of worship, a whole lot of care. Minimal descriptions of reader, no use of y/n.
A/N: A little Valentine’s story with a very tired, very soft and very domesticated Joel Miller. PWP but make it sweet. If love isn’t like this, I don’t want it, tbh. 2/2 of my Joel Miller Valentine’s day naughty & nice one shots. Enjoy!
You could say that you had gotten used to it- the way Joel Miller loved you- but that would be a lie.
He was a man of few words, but you didn’t need to hear many. His care for you shone through in his actions; in little gestures that you were sure would have fallen by the wayside the longer you dated him, but after nearly a year together they hadn’t.
He would leave your clothes on the heater for you on cold mornings and set up the coffee machine so that all you had to do was turn it on when you woke up. He kept a mental list of things that you liked, or mentioned in passing; your favourite seasonal flowers, what type of snacks you preferred, books you wanted to read, places you wanted to go. He would surprise you with little trinkets he’d found in your favourite colour, or candles for his place in scents that you loved to make you feel more at home there. He always rested a steadying hand on the small of your back when you walked together and hold you close when you climbed in to bed with him after a long day, lulling you to sleep with kind words whispered in to your hair. He would sometimes wake you in the fresh hours of dawn before he left for work, murmuring those same things into the soft skin of your thigh as he pleasured you with a devotion that you had previously never known.
“I gotta treat my girl right” was all he would say with a shrug and a coy smile whenever you brought it up.
You were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, of course. You both knew that. You had for years before you’d welcomed him in to your life. It was one of the first things that made him fall for you, your independence, but Joel revelled in making life just a little bit easier for you, even when it made things more difficult for himself.
So today, you decided that you wanted to make things easy for him. You weren’t the overly domestic type, but he’d had a long week and you wanted to do something nice. You left work early and stopped by the grocery store on your way to his place to pick up a cute Valentine’s day card and the ingredients to make dinner for him.
You started on dinner as soon as you made it to Joel’s and changed in to some comfy clothes as soon as it was in the oven. The sight of your clothes nestled in against his in the dresser made your heart swoop. You tidied round a little, set the table and set one of Joel’s prized vintage records on the turntable as you waited for him to get home.
You called a hello over the music when you heard the front door close, and he appeared in the threshold of the kitchen with a bouquet of pink roses in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. His face broke in to a wide smile when he saw you, but it wasn’t quite enough to cover the weariness that sat heavy on his features.
“Hey, baby,” he said, leaning in to kiss you when you padded over to him. “Didn’t think you’d beat me here. Wanted to surprise you with these.”
“Left work early,” you said, accepting the flowers with a smile as he set the wine on the counter. “These are so gorgeous, Joel. Thank you.”
“Gorgeous flowers for my gorgeous lady,” he murmured, winking at you. You beamed up at him before moving to put the flowers in some water.
“Smells good in here,” Joel said, shrugging off his jacket.
“Made us dinner,” you explained, reaching up to the cupboard for some wine glasses. “It’s pretty much ready, I think.”
“You didn’t have to do that, sweetheart, we coulda just ordered takeout or somethin’,” Joel said, watching you fondly.
You shrugged and gestured for him to sit, before turning your attention to the dish in the oven.
“I wanted to do something nice- you do nice things for me all the time.”
Joel shifted awkwardly where he stood and flexed his hands against the back of the chair, but kept his eyes fixed on you. You missed the expression that crossed his face. “That’s different,”
You turned to him with a hand on your hip. “It’s really not. Would you just sit down, Miller? Let me take care of you.”
“Yes ma’am,” he replied, shooting you a lopsided grin before he did as he was told.
Dinner was nice, and you were overjoyed to spend some time with Joel like this. He looked relaxed. Happy. The music from the record player floated through from the other room as a sweet soundtrack to your meal. Joel was as tactile as he always was, his knee bumping against yours affectionately under the table as he complimented your cooking. You both sat and talked for a long while after the food was finished, and only moved when Joel yawned so widely his hand didn’t even cover it.
You cleaned up together, despite your assurances that he could get in to bed and leave you to sort out the mess. Joel had refused and started washing up before you could stop him.
As you dried the last dish, Joel moved to stand behind you, arms caging you in as he peppered kisses to the side of your neck.
“I really love comin’ home to you, y’know.” He said between kisses.
“Oh yeah?” You said, leaning in to his chest.
“Yeah.” He breathed against your ear.
Your stomach flipped as you turned and leaned back against the counter to get a good look at him. His eyes didn’t meet yours- he looked at the floor and took a steadying breath before he spoke again.
“I wondered if… if you’d maybe wanna move in here with me?” He murmured, throwing you an awkward, lopsided smile. “Or find someplace new together? I wanna come home to you every night, darlin’.”
You stared at him, lips parted in surprise. Not because you hadn’t thought about it before. You had. A lot. But you’d never voiced your desires to him, you weren’t sure if he’d felt the same way, and you hadn’t wanted to fuck anything up by asking him.
Hearing Joel say it, seeing how tense he was, bracing himself for your response, made something bloom deep within your chest. Your silence must have stretched on a little too long- Joel exhaled sharply, and his arms dropped to his side giving you a chance to move away if you wanted to.
“Look, I don’t wanna rush anythin’,” he said, the words scraping their way out of his throat, rough under the effort of hiding his disappointment. “Just thought since we’ve been doin’ this a while, and I think you like it here. I figured-”
You cupped his face in your hands, gently tracing your thumbs over the scruff on his jaw, and lifted his head to make him look at you. “Joel.”
The look on his face when his eyes finally met yours made it feel like something was squeezing your heart.
“I’d love to,” you said, smiling up at him so that there was no room for any doubt.
His breath hitched, a sweet little sound you’d only ever heard him make when you were in bed together. “You would?”
You nodded, your smile widening. “Yeah.”
Relief washed over his face, and before you could say anything else, he was kissing you. His hands splayed over your hips, pulling you even closer. Your fingers slid in to the short curls at the nape of his neck, and as you deepened the kiss you felt his shoulders drop as the last of his tension melted away.
The realisation filled you with a sudden yearning. You wanted him to feel it, to understand just how much you wanted this- wanted him.
You tightened your fingers in his hair and he let out a low moan, his fingers sliding down to squeeze the backs of your thighs. You pulled back just enough to catch your breath and rested your forehead against his. He looked so beautiful; dark eyes blown with desire and his lips swollen from your kisses.
“Let’s go to bed, handsome,” you said, taking his hand.
As soon as you’d closed the bedroom door, Joel was on you. He tugged at your clothes, pulling them off with a fervour that suggested he’d suddenly forgotten how tired he was.
When he’d stripped of everything except your underwear, he sat you down on the edge of the bed and stayed close, kneeling between your parted knees and sliding his hands up your thighs, thumbs pressing gentle circles in to your soft skin. He looked up at you from his spot on the floor with an expression so full of adoration it made your head spin.
“You gonna let me take care of you now, sugar?” The want in his voice caused it to crack, and you heard the plea laced through the words.
You nodded, unable to find your own voice as your fingers threaded through his hair again, guiding him down to where he longed to be. He trailed soft open-mouthed kisses up your thigh, pulling a contented sigh from you.
Joel took his time, as he always did when he had you like this. The soft scratch of his beard left a tingling warmth on your skin, and his hands pressed firmly against your legs, holding you open as he nosed against the damp fabric between them, breathing you in like he was savouring something precious.
“You’re so fuckin’ sweet,” he murmured, pressing a kiss over the damp patch before hooking his fingers into the waistband of your underwear and dragging them down your legs.
You barely had time to let out a whimper before he was settling between your thighs pressing his tongue against your aching heat. He groaned at the first taste of you, and it vibrated against your clit so deliciously that you had no choice but to fall back on to the bed, your fingers leaving his hair to clutch at the comforter.
You gasped his name, thighs beginning to tremble in anticipation of his licks. He dragged his tongue over every sensitive spot he knew by heart, fingers digging in to your skin when your hips raised toward his face in a silent request for more.
It was almost unbearable- when he took you apart like this- when he made you feel like nothing else in the world existed except you and him and the pleasure that shot through you, building with every moment.
You bucked your hips again and he groaned against you, pressing his face closer to nudge his nose against your clit as he eased two fingers inside you, curling them just right.
“Fuck- Joel,” you gasped, chest heaving,
“I got you, darlin’. It’s alright, I got you.” He murmured before moving his tongue to flick right over your clit.
He knew exactly how to take you apart. At this point, you’d call him an expert at it with no hint of irony, and as always, it wasn’t long before you were clenching down on his fingers, moaning loudly to the heavens as you came. He hummed against you, a sweet satisfied sound, as he coaxed you through the aftershocks.
“Joel,” you whined, breath catching.
His movements stilled slowly and then he was moving, pressing one last lingering kiss against your thigh before shifting to stand, pulling off his clothes before sliding up your body. His hands bracketed your face as he hovered above you. His eyes were dark and hazy with want, his lips glistening, his breathing uneven.
“Yeah?” He murmured, head tilted in appreciation as he looked down at you . “Need me, sweetheart?”
You nodded, wrapping your arms around his neck, pulling at him until your lips brushed against his, tasting yourself on him. “Always,” you whispered.
A groan rumbled from his chest and he pressed his body flush against yours. You could feel his length hot and heavy, pressing in to your hip as you arched up in to him, desperate for him to be inside you. He pulled back just enough to met your gaze, thumb stroking along your cheek.
And then he was guiding himself to your entrance, sinking in to you with a slow, deliberate thrust, filling you completely.
“Jesus,” he rasped, voice tight as if he was holding on to his control by a thread. “You feel so good, darlin’.”
You let out a low, breathy moan against his jaw, wrapping your legs around his waist to keep him as close as possible. He was so deep, so warm and solid above you, surrounding you, overwhelming every one of your senses. His hand moved to cup the back of your head, tucking it against his shoulder gently as he thrust in to you. He was all around you, all that you could feel and see- overwhelming in the most intoxicating way.
He started to move, rocking his hips slowly, dragging his cock against the spot inside you that made you weak, that left you unable to do anything except press crescent shapes in to his back with your fingernails. He kept his pace unhurried, murmuring words of praise that you could hardly hear over your building moans of pleasure. When you came again it was blinding; the pleasure wracked through you like a wild thing, twitching and clenching at your insides before it subsided in to a rolling wave of fuzziness, rippling through to your toes like TV static. Joel let out a string of curses at how hard you clenched around him, and only increased the speed of his movements when you let out a couple of whimpers as the residual spasms of your orgasm rolled through you.
Joel’s breathing grew heavier, his rhythm faltering somewhat as he chased his own release. He let go of the back of your head to press a rough kiss to your temple as his body started to tremble above you. The way you clenched around him, still pulsing with aftershocks, made his jaw go slack, a deep, broken moan spilling from his lips.
He buried himself deep with a rough, shuddering exhale, body tensing as he came. His face pressed against your neck, breath hot against your skin as he let himself fall apart in you. You could feel the way he softened, how his hold on you turned from something desperate to something grounding, like he needed you there with him more than anything.
Joel shifted just enough to press a soft kiss to your shoulder, his hands smoothing over your body, slow and careful. He never pulled away too fast, never left you feeling empty. Instead, he cupped your cheek, guiding your mouth in to a kiss that was soft and lingering as he pulled out of you.
“You okay, baby?” He murmured, lips brushing against yours as he spoke.
You hummed, nodding sleepily, and he smiled, tracing his thumb along your cheekbone.
“You’re so perfect,” he whispered, pressing another kiss to the side of your face before shifting to pull you against his chest.
You nestled in as he pulled blankets around you both. He always did that, always made sure that you were warm, safe, cared for.
His fingers traced slow, absentminded patterns along your back, his breath deep and steady against the top of your head. The quiet stretched between you, comfortable and warm in your post-orgasm bliss.
“Love you,” you muttered, pressing a soft kiss against his chest. Joel’s arms tightened around you, and when he spoke, his voice was thick with emotion. “Love you too, sweetheart.” His hand found yours beneath the blanket, fingers slotting together with yours in a practised, effortless way. As sleep began to pull you under, you felt it- how deeply he meant it, the depth of your own love for him, and how you didn’t want to spend another day where you didn’t sleep and wake beside him. He was home, and so were you.

Toji...underestimates his own strength sometimes.
And you know this - the man has probably broken the furniture in your house far more times than you can count (by accident of course) but it still never failed to amuse you.
The two of you had met while you were on a business trip to Japan - and immediately the two of you hit it off after the burly man had saved you from some random drunk off the streets of Okinawa.
However, you were in Japan for a business trip - and thus once your time there was up, you were forced to move back to America.
It was a strange dynamic the two of you had, not fully long distance because you two always tried to fly in and spend time with each other as much as possible - and as much of a hassle that it was, you made it work.
Eventually, Toji had decided to move in with you in the United States, and to say the very least... it was a major culture shock.
Learning English was one thing (seriously, how many sounds can 'ough' make?!) but American life was a stark contrast to the Japanese way of living that Toji sometimes found it difficult to wrap his mind around.
You made it easier though. He would never admit it- but the only reason he went through all of this was because of you.
It was strange, Toji never thought he'd get so attached to someone that he'd uproot his entire life and move across the world just to be with the one he loved, but you made it worth it.
Your laugh, your smile, your kindness, your witty banter - Toji would move planets if he could just be with you a second longer. You were like a drug - addicting and euphoric. No amount of rehab could get him over you.
But the main thing about America that captivated Toji's interest? (other than you)
Football.
And by football, I mean American football. To Toji's knowledge, football was what the Americans called 'soccer', but here, football was a whole different story.
You had put it on one day, for the hell of it - you weren't entirely into sports that much, but you understood the basics of the game. Toji at first thought it was stupid, why the fuck would he give a shit about big beefy men throwing around a deformed ball?
But begrudgingly, your boyfriend got oddly into it, going so far as to buy you both matching jerseys and keep tabs on the progressions of each game.
You thought it was cute - how into it he got, yelling and pouting at the screen in ways that he would deny later on as if the players on the TV could hear him.
Tonight was no different, Toji relaxing on the couch with you pressed up against him, reading a book, with the semi-finals of whatever football tournament he was following - when suddenly:
CRASH!
You blink momentarily, beer dripping down your shirt as Toji stares what used to be his beer can, the can now completely decimated by your boyfriend's death grip.
You gape at him in shock - your boyfriend turning uncharacteristically bright red.
"Did you just-"
"Shut up."
"Toji, that's the third time this week-"
"I know-"
"You're so lucky it didn't get on my book or you'd be so dead right now."
A/N: in honor of the super bowl heh - toji would so be a football dad (he probably bets on the games all the time too)

The Shen Yuan that dies - really dies. He actually dies and doesn't transmigrate, but well, you know, death is a timeless thing and the flow of time itself in the world of the dead is so weird lol So, well, let me make up that all the demons and ghost kings and cultivators inhabit this powerful timeless space where the dead also go, and oh, there's Shen Yuan now -
So, Shen Yuan is just a silly ghost fire filled with pent-up rage, damn shitty novel, damn shitty author. Is he “alive” for something? Because of how much he hates PIDW and its fucked up ending. Get a lower-ranking ghost body because he's just... angry at Airplane. His new form is, ah, well, different and weird, but he can grow his hair to go unnoticed, and can steal some robes.
Get a small job eventually just because he was bored and although he don't need to eat, it would be nice to have extra money - and the tea house owner doesn't care if he's a human or a ghost as long as he's not creepy with the customers and serves their tables. It's a routine that gives him the quick financial support to get bad books, complain more - and maybe he's getting stronger because of it? Because of his anger at mediocre authors and repressed anger? Does it even make sense?
At some point, Tonglu opens. Shen Yuan has headaches and the desperate feeling that he must go, as if he summoned. He tells his boss he's going to be out for ghostly reasons - his boss is like, oh, you needed a vacation anyway. And Shen Yuan goes.
It's a massacre, of course. A mix between the Hunger Games and the Purge, but Shen Yuan has something they definitely don't: a lot of knowledge in shooting video games. And he doesn't have a gun, but hey, he can shoot resentful spiritual energy and it works like bullets or something - he soon discovers that the more ghosts he overcomes, he becomes stronger. He has more power to throw, more skills, a stronger body.
Go to the kiln. Have bloody fights. At some point he gets a sword and it takes him forever and nothing like a training sequence to use it properly. And finally, the kiln opens and Shen Yuan comes out looking... Well, stronger.
He returns to the teahouse to change and take a bath. The owner tells him that it's been thirteen years, what the hell, but lets him in and gives him hot water and clothes.
Shen Yuan's new body and new abilities are strange to him. He notices himself taller. Stronger. His hearing and smell have improved. His abilities seem to be more wordy, as if he could persuade people if he spoke to them in a specific tone, as if his words could bind them. Well, it's not a bad way to be dead.
Shen Yuan tries to continue working at the tea house, but the humans are clearly terrified by the powerful ghost king aura in their area, so there are hardly any customers. Shen Yuan just sighs and decides to leave. He has some savings anyway.
Ghosts run away from him. Humans either try to kill him or hide. Shen Yuan is fed up; no matter if it is in the mortal world or the ghost world, people are gossiping about him and how he has not taken a Territory, about how unorthodox he is, about how they are waiting for him to start his killing spree one day.
Shen Yuan learns to change his appearance from creepy ghost to normal human, hide his resentful energy, and camouflage himself in the human world. It's a long way from his old tea house, and so many years have passed that the kind owner has probably already died, so Shen Yuan gets another job at a bookstore. Nothing unusual. Just a boy who was once from a wealthy family and was disinherited when his older brother took over the family leadership because of their bad relationship. Now he must work to live.
People swallow that story like a good meal, some even feel sorry for him.
And Shen Yuan is having a decent afterlife. Boring, mostly, but with good days. He reads a lot, gets angry a lot, writes authors letters that reach their desks without them even realizing how the hell did this crazy guy find his addresses. Let's just say he's having an interesting life.
Then one day, he meets Luo Binghe.
He... He literally knows that he's Binghe. It couldn't be anyone else but Luo Binghe. He does his investigations, and apparently, Emperor Luo Binghe exists, he has been there all along. It's not like Shen Yuan knew it; the ghost realm and the human-demon realm are divided, and even if they have a common mortal ancestor, demons and ghosts don't usually meddle in their own things.
Not that Shen Yuan wants to be cannon fodder anyway; he keeps his distance in Binghe, works at that bookstore, gives friendly greetings to his customers, and keeps sending angry letters to authors.
And one day Shen Yuan receives a direct visit from Luo Binghe at his door. With a letter in his hand.
"This letter was on my Second Wife's desk," Luo Binghe says, with a fake smile. "No one but her can open or read it, so this Lord wonders after discovering the resentful energy signature on the paper, what missives does this Ghost King exchange with one of the Emperor's wives?"
Shen Yuan is not surprised that Luo Binghe knows who he is - ever so OP the Protagonist! However, it is more difficult to explain that his wife actually writes cut-sleeved novels that the fact that Shen Yuan was reading and criticizing them in the first place.
Well, he's been dead for over a hundred years, really denying that he's at least bisexual at this point in his life...

I've done most of these in my current project.
Gold is worthless in Quiet Space, as is everything except time itself. Access to space and automation of labor kind of kill the concept of scarcity of goods entirely and well, that's it for economics as we know it. The Terran Protectorate's closest thing to a currency is a literal credit system that entitles you to X hours of the empire's industrial capacity.
I mean, time is fleeting...
Its a stellar Empire. Only one clock is 24 hour and it's Earth's. The odds of another planet having the same rotational speed is basically 0.
Again since most places in my setting are not on Earth and therefore axial tilts are different... and also most megastructures and space habs don't have seasons at all...
I've got a planet that rains diamonds. Okay sure I'm just borrowing it from reality but people can go there and do things.
Most planets have more than 1 moon, turns out.
One of the human Clann's homeorlds is a gas giant. It has rings. Several planets have orbital ring habitats, but I don't think that's what you meant.
I have this, but the world is uninhabitable without bleeding edge shield technology.
I've got the star roads. They're invisible, does that count? TLDR; they're a FTL system that pushes craft in them faster than light by using a spinoff of gravitational drive technology to sort of ripp off mass effect but instead of sling shots it's based on the US highway system.
The Runi use wood for some of their jewelry.
The Thymrai don't use anything for wedding band type signifiers of marriage. They use their words "We're one." or "I have my mate." and if you don't respect that they'll probably stab you because you're calling them a liar and that's fighting words in their culture.
The Glorin always make a new name from select syllables from both prior names when they wed. They're also nano-hiveminds with each individual having 3 bodies, so most of their scocial things are odd.
I have several robotic species which genuinely would not be able to grock the idea of bastardry. "But... they manufactured you. You are their creation. Circumstances are irrelevant."
Most of my aliens do not use binary sexes. Many of the monosex species don't have a concept of gender at all because WHY WOULD THEY?
The Glorin again. They discount other gods as gods because they know they're just extradimentional entities that live in hyperspace. Their god does not live in hyperspace and seems supernatural to other gods. She also dosn't do the normal god things, she shows up like your cool aunt coming back to town and will do things like make your whole species immune to cancer and call it a "bug fix".
Again, the Glorin's god. She's very lovecraftian in appearance unless she specifically takes on a humanoid form for whatever reason (but she'll complain the entire time about how painful it is to "scrunch up like this")
Given designer organisms are a thing for Terrans, I've got this one. Because many of them are reskined other critters! (I may work on this one later today)
Plot? You assume I worldbuild to tell a narrative? Lol! I'm that wierdo who worldbuilds as their main hobby and sometimes you get a story out of it because I got bored.
I've got this one. What? This is a science-fantasy setting. Not sci-fi. TLDR; you can get a journal that will tell you everything friends that have willingly touched the journal did yesterday. It resets every time you sleep and fills you in on the previous day with every reset. This is, in fact, communication. Its just not real time or intentional. Yes this thing can end friendships, but its popular with Terrans because Terran society is about authenticity in 4269 and if your best friend actually thinks you're lame you want to know so you can terminate the friendship and find someone else (also their whole family would shame them as being inauthentic is as big of a social taboo as incest is today).
Books don't exist anymore. All information you want is either a direct download to your brain, or a VR experience. So... Yeah I've got this covered. Its not even a "well I love old things, so I still read books!" type of deal. If you read a book someone would look at you with the same incredulity that you would look at someone trying to light their bong by rubbing two sticks together. You'd probably also alert Central to a mental health crisis.
Many species communicate by psionic or digital telepathy. But sign langauge dosn't exist outside of millitary applications anymore. Not because "screw deaf/mute people!" but because genetic engineering has eliminated those conditions entirly. No one is born with physical disadvantages anymore. And even if they were, they'd be able to have them removed for free any time after they turn 16 since medical technology can reshape your body howeaver you please and has hit the "IRL Korean MMO character creator" point of "no further development necessary". (Yes that is a cornerstone of Terran culture. Part of that "be authentic" deal is your expected to live in a body that is "you" rather than whatever you were born as.)
Most of my alien species are not omnivores.
Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isn’t gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isn’t 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that aren’t brown or grey/black, like San Juan’s blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that don’t look like people
Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom
“Books” that aren’t bound or scrolls
A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)
I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

this feels like a silly question but I know you have the answer. is hypnotism real? or is hypno kink just another form of roleplaying? Or something in between?
the trance states some people reach under hypnosis are undeniably a real thing! in fact, people enter into trance-like states in everyday life all the time! when you're zoning out on the highway, particularly engrossed in a book or movie, wrapped up in a fantasy, or even in a more receptive state while listening to a particularly compelling speaker or preacher, you are entering into a trance state! hypnosis is just one of the means by which a person can enter into this altered state of consciousness. people also reach trance by meditating, praying, engaging in repetitive tasks, and all kinds of other ways. trance is also highly similar to subspace, or even Domspace really, heightened mental states that people enter into after engaging in a kinky role under the right conditions.
research shows that when a person enters into a trance they are generally more vividly imaginative, receptive, and suggestible, and they may also be less inhibited and more able to access feelings and thoughts they are normally uncomfortable with. this can make it both a really meaningful state to enter into, and a potentially risky one to play with or have exploited by another person.
in practice, some people with hypnosis kinks only roleplay the activity (though because of the nature of how trance works, sometimes pretending to be in a trance can just get you into a trance!). other people are only interested in fictional depictions of hypnotic states in animated GIFs or stories or things like that. but a great many of us in the hypnosis fetish community do engage in actual hypnosis that is informed by what research is available on the matter, and work on developing new techniques for helping people achieve hypnotic states and experience particular phenomena while under hypnosis - for example hypnotic amnesia, hallucinations, hands-free orgasms, and any number of other conditioned responses.
for the average novice getting into the kink, the most you're going to experience at first is a feeling of relaxation and maybe some cute party tricks, or maybe a little extra intensity when taking on a different headspace, such as pup space or bimbofication. you might feel a little bit more at ease, silly, and able to take in suggestions and run with them. with practice and a seasoned hypnotist and hypnotic subject though, you can get into the realm of some pretty dramatic personality change and preference change kind of stuff. I've had entire whole new kinks inserted into me by hypnotists before that have stuck around for years. I didn't used to be until latex for example. I also learned how to deep throat exclusively from listening to hypnotic files and all the reviews indicate I'm damn good at it (The limitations of my small mouth not withstanding). hypnosis got me to learn to suppress my gag reflex really easily, and it's great for training physical relaxation and responses like these.
I've also had like breaks from reality from being in trance states for days or weeks at a time with hypnotic mantras running in the back of my brain telling me that I'm a robot I'm not a person and stuff, and known people who have experienced psychotic breaks from pushing the throttle on certain forms of hypnotic play too heavily when they were already vulnerable to that kind of thing, so you can reach really high highs and low lows with this stuff. That's if you have the right mindset and dedication to it, it's not magic. but it is a lot like being in a cult, or being under another person's influence in some other way. humans are far more susceptible to influence than they realize sometimes.

It doesn’t feel like living anymore.
I love Miranda. And this is maybe the moment I find her the most arresting and beautiful. It’s such a raw, desperate moment. Asking to be seen. I love her contradictions. How she is both selfish and self-sacrificing. She is incredibly strong in so many regards, and yet struggling to find her own agency. She is honest and yet underhanded. She is kind and petty, smug and patient. As an avowed hedonist, she comes to endure even when she’s past her endurance. An in the end she becomes a martyr, when I think all she ever wanted was to be her own person.
That complexity is reflected in her relationship with James I think. There are many different takes on it, all of them valid, obviously, so this is just my own…
I find their relationship fascinating. It’s obvious that they love each other. It’s also obvious that this love is different than the one they had for Thomas, although that shared love for him certainly plays an important role in their relationship. But I think that Miranda maybe doesn’t love like James and Thomas at all, not in this all consuming way. The way I see her, she’s also completely aromantic, but that doesn’t make her love something lesser.
Miranda loves Thomas as someone who shares her interests and temperament, an intellectually stimulating partner, a great man. They were a harmonious couple, their relationship seemingly effortless. Her relationship with James on the other hand is a constant struggle, and not just because of the circumstances they find themselves in, I think. They are both too alike and too different. The one that fit with them was always Thomas.
Miranda and James’ love for each other is mostly built on loyalty. On knowing that whatever may come, the other will stand with them to the bitter end. And because of that loyalty they both try to be more for the other, to fill the void Thomas left, and failing miserably at it.
James tries to give Miranda things that connect her with her old life: books, a spinet, delicate tea cups. Even sex. But it’s a poor substitute, and the thing she most longs for —companionship— is unbearable for him to provide, because being with her reminds him of what he lost. Miranda wants to remember Thomas and talk about him, but James can’t.
James tries to keep Thomas close by striving to bring his vision to life, finish what they started, and prove England wrong in the process. And Miranda tries to be a partner in this. She helps him plot and patches him up and harbours prisoners, but she hates it just as much. They both hate the things the other needs from them. And yet they stubbornly hold on to each other, and try to keep each other safe. It’s not a passionate love. At times it’s almost resentful. But it’s deep and true.
How hard it must be for Miranda to love James. Love him in Thomas stead, knowing that she falls short by miles. How hard it must be to see him try to love her better, and failing because he, too, isn’t Thomas. Loving each other with such loyal devotion across the divide, the hole that Thomas left. Loving each other even though it is hard, and it hurts, that’s what makes it beautiful to me.

Love and Lies
satoru gojo x reader
cw: drunk confessions, angst(?)
“how many times are you gonna do this, hm?” gojo grunts, carrying dragging a drunk you back to your place.
you mutter something inaudibly, gojo paying no mind to it as he focuses on getting you safely home.
“no.”
“no?” he turns to you confused.
“i dun wann go home..too lonely.”
gojo’s gaze softens, although his playful smirk still appears.
“pffft, you just wanna be in my sheets.”
he winces as you hit his head hard, “ow! i didn’t mean it like that, baby! i know you love my soft, $700 king sized bed.”
“you’re stupid..”
“i’m already helping your drunk ass yet you still bully me? ugh, you wound me.” gojo chuckles, putting his hand on his heart as he gasps dramatically.
after an uncomfortable length of silence and carrying you home, you spoke up.
“‘m sorry..”
gojo raises his eyebrow, “i know you are. you don’t think straight when you’re drunk, it’s okay.”
“i just.. haven’t been feeling well lately”
“…so you think drowning yourself in alcohol would make things better?” he sighs. “you’re lucky i’m here to take care of ya.”
you sigh guiltily, knowing he’s right. “yeah..”
when you get to his apartment, you immediately flop onto his bed—no hesitation, no questions asked.
gojo smiles as he gazes at you softly.
“alright, pretty girl. let’s get you comfy.”
he sits you up under the blanket, taking note of you tear stained cheeks.
“baby, what’s wrong?” he says as he wipes your tears away.
“i just- i don’t know what to do, satoru..” you sniffle.
“what do you mean you don’t know what to do?” he asks with a gentle tone, “you could start by taking more care of yourself. you don’t need to drink away your problems. not when i’m here at least.”
you wipe your tears aggressively, words caught up in your throat. “how can i do that when all my problems root from the people i can talk to?”
he pauses. his eyebrows furrow with concern, gently rubbing your arms as comfort.
“you’re.. afraid to talk about how you feel, huh?” you nod. he knows that feeling all too well. he’s given his all to protect you, that he forgot about this aspect of your well-being.
“hey, it’s okay!” he desperately tries to sound optimistic. “you don’t have to feel pressured, but you know you can always talk to me, right?”
a frown casts upon your face, “not when it’s about you.”
what?
panic stirs within gojo. what had he done for you to resort to alcohol? did he do something to greatly offend you? he knows he annoys you too much, but that’s just because you’re his best friend!
“what.. did i do something?”
when you don’t reply, your eyes half lidded and posture hunched over, gojo thinks he’s done the unspeakable. the kind of action that could make you write a whole book about it.
“..i like you.” your face lights up with sadness, a look clinging onto a thread of desperation.
a shiver ran down gojo’s soul. how could this happen? not even his six eyes could predict this.
you take gojo’s silence as an unspoken rejection, the disbelief in his eyes saying everything. “i’m sorry,”
gojo’s expression softens, taking a moment to gather his thoughts and slightly pulling his comforting hands away from your arms.
“hey, don’t apologise. there’s nothing to be sorry about, you just.. took me by surprise, that’s all.”
you look up at him, eyes glistening with tears.
“you.. what do you feel?”
he sighs, a mixture of longing and contemplation cast upon his face.
“i don’t know. i care about you, a lot more than i care to admit.” he chuckles, “you’re my best friend but i.. i haven’t really allowed myself to consider anything more than that.”
oh.
that was the cherry on top.
he panics, scrambling to find the words to ensure things don’t stay awkward between you two.
“look, it’s not that i haven’t thought about it before. you know, the possibility of us being more than friends” he gulps. “i just don’t want to ruin everything we have and what we’ve been through together.”
your heart aches, you can’t help but look away from the man you love.
“but you won’t.. how would you?”
“I don’t know,” he admits honestly. “i guess.. i’m just afraid that if things go wrong between us, it would change what we have now. i don’t want to risk losing our friendship if things don’t work out romantically.”
he has a point, but what good does it cause you? pining over your best friend, only to hear that he feels the same way but also doesn’t because he’s too stuck over your friendship? it’s all too complicated for your intoxicated mind.
“but… i also can’t ignore what you just said,” he says, looking into your eyes. “you said you like me, i.. i can’t just disregard that. it’s just a lot to process, especially in your current state. i want to be sure you really mean what you said.”
you choke on your silent sobs, muttering out a soft “i do mean it..”
“i believe you..” he says, his voice filled with a touch of vulnerability. “but… let’s talk about this more when you’re sober, okay? i don’t want us making any rash decisions and conversations right now, not when we’re both this emotional and vulnerable.”
you nod apprehensively, allowing yourself to sink into the comfy bed sheets.
“we’ll talk more in the morning, okay? i’ll be here when you wake up.”
and just like that, the door closes and all that fills the air is tension and unspoken truths.
mixed signals go crazy🫨🫨

this is so beautifully put. i mean gorgeous. i am not caught up so i am effectively spoiling myself but funnily enough i actually tried to talk to my mother about this while watching s1 bc at the same time i'd been reading a chapter of this book about compulsory sexuality (refusing compulsory sexuality: a black asexual lens on our sex-obsessed culture by sherronda j brown) which really encouraged this exploration for me. like so much of what stood out to me was the direct comparison of innie marks interrogation of his own creation being spurred on whilst dealing with integrating helly into the severed floor (and the loss of petey) vs his sister on the outside having her first child. helly r is almost a petulant child to him at first, an inconvenience to the order of things although necessary for their workplace function at lumon (like ops gf said, just like helena mark as her boss almost resents the freedom with which helly is defiant), until of course he really reconciles the severity and the lengths she goes to and turns inward and wonders why he never stopped to question it all himself. so we see these motivations for reproduction in direct contrast -- in the story of mark the final goal of his reproduction is productivity (by separating himself from his trauma), versus devon and rickan taking an approach to reproduction "more virtuously" by comparison (like excited for the journey of raising a unique human being). now this is the point where i realized i was talking to my mother and didnt really have my thoughts wrapped around it and wanted to begin that type of conversation with more nuance and the conversation naturally returned back to the show.
but! back to the book by sherronda j brown -- it has a whole chapter on productivity, partially tackling how capitalism incorporates productivity into nuclear family making which kind of effectively pulls the magic out of the point of a family. a child is not something that you can utilize/form for some present/later convenience, they're a human being with their own unique ambitions and the beauty of parenthood is often watching them discover that etc etc. but capitalism looks to control family making as it is a method of economic stimulation. again this requires a lot of nuance, because since we are so embedded in capitalism in some ways you have no choice but to be implicit even if you are aware, and you can be doing this wether you realize it or not. i also want to be sure i acknowledge that i am by no means an expert on this i just felt emboldened to get into it here. alongside those examples given by the amazing prev posts/tags this is illustrated in real life by how so many people are realizing using children as a contingency plan for who'll take care of you when you age or like expecting grandchildren from your own children. like its absolutely not a bad thing to want these things but assuming no matter how you treat your children that its their responsibility to fulfill that for you is bull -- and objectively to expect this is not even always guaranteed biologically for several reasons but i digress. a child is their own person worthy of respect and if you don't give it to them they don't/shouldn't owe you present or future compliance (again theres nuance, even in severance given the outies varying levels of awareness of/care about their innies treatment) but capitalism is a part of perpetuating this. as so many now realize if you are surrounded by real true community confirmed elder care and the opportunity to be a grandparent-like mentor is/should be available without nuclear family to fulfill it. the power of found family and all that beautiful stuff! particularly when imagined with a queer lens. but capitalism has taught us intentionally that all of this should come from the heteronormative nuclear family and is only valid when derived from a heteronormative nuclear family in order to isolate us from one another and sell us these opportunities in other ways for their own gain. anyways i've danced all around it myself but brown says the following far more concisely in their amazing book (which i look forward to finishing).
"anxiety about the sex recession among young people is also anxiety about an accompanying decrease in marriage, nuclear family making, and home ownership. all of these things are intimately related and impact our economy, especially because they are so easily capitalized on. those invested in the capitalist system work to convince us that these are necessary parts of life and that participation in them makes us more mature adults and 'productive' members of society... therefore, cisheterosexual sex itself becomes a means of productivity because it is understood to ultimately lead to marriage, procreation, and nuclear families, all of which are integral to patriarchal and white supremactist capitalist systems."
its so remarkably layered i would love to pick the brains of the writers about it all!! lumon offering severance and the creation of an innie as this amazing way to free themselves from the monotony of a job or like the weight of the outside world on their work. but of course this job is necessitated by the capitalist society they exist within and the thing that drives them all to severance is what capitalism forces them to believe they have wrong with themselves or have to achieve to be successful. so then when they create their innie, or "have their child" as it were, and the child demands more love than you ever thought you were allowed the capitalism worm in your brain has already prepped you to place the blame on the child and not realize the system is what has it all wrong. and even if you do understand the systems driven you to this point the cost that you've paid for being compliant all this time is this life you now get to watch your child live.
my gf said something sooo insane about helly the other day and i cannot stop thinking about it. she was like. helena and helly’s relationship is almost maternal. the way helena created helly as an extension of herself, to serve her interests, to try and impress her own family. she scolds helly, talks down to her like a child. “i understand you’re unhappy with the life you’ve been given” “i am a person, you are not”. the way she envies and resents helly’s freedom. the way she feels entitled to helly’s life and is now living vicariously through her in the most literal sense. what if you created life and now they’re experiencing the things you’ve always wanted for yourself. what if you created life and they were flawed and loud and demanding and they were loved more than you’ve ever been. and you hated them for it. the mother/daughterisms are insane my girlfriend is insane
#i mean#really light work here#uhhh its been like an hour holy shit#ok now im gonna go catch up on the current season#severance#severance s2 spoilers#severance season 2#helly r#mark s#refusing compulsory sexuality#compulsory sexuality#sherronda j brown#sherronda brown#severance spoilers#idk let me know#lgbtq#lgbtqia#asexuality#compulsory heterosexuality#comphet#so many things apply here#found family#me#mine#words#word vomit#essay#essays#journal#diary

꒰ summary: wearing a piece of clothing owned by the swordsman was not a sight he'd ever imagined enjoying as much as he did. ꒱
꒰ contents: fluff fluff fluff! reader is shy & a little flirty. zoro is head over heels for reader. very soft & flustered zoro <3 ꒱
꒰ notes: i have really been craving some soft zoro content and this popped in my head and i HAD to write it out ^_^ ꒱
♡ + ⤿ are very much appreciated ૮ ྀི◞ ⸝⸝ ◟ ྀིა !
zoro had always admired you from afar.
you were beautiful, kind, and merry. you moved so gently, as if all would shatter if you didn't do so. you spoke in such a sweet and melodious voice that every time he heard you, his heart would involuntarily skip a beat. you treated everyone on the crew so lovingly that there were many a times he wished he had even a sliver of the goodness that you had.
despite his stoic demeanour, it crumbled every time you were around. he couldn't help the pink that painted his cheeks, his heart that felt like it would thump out of his chest, his mouth that stumbled on his words. you turned him into pile of mush with your presence alone and it was maddening to him.
though secretly, he revelled in this newfound feeling — if it was with you he got to explore it with.
he didn't think there were any more ways for you to make his heart flutter and stomach churn with reverence. that was, until he saw you wear one of his t-shirts.
he did not own many so he wondered how you'd got a hold of it in the first place. he wondered why you chose his t-shirt out of all the others. had you chosen his on purpose? the thoughts clouding his mind were driving him insane.
seeing you engulfed in his top made his entire body turn to goo. it hung on your frame, clinging onto your divine curves. your chest was more exposed than usual which resulted in a blush to tinge his face when he realised he'd been staring for a bit too long.
he couldn't exactly understand why it was so endearing to him that you were wearing his clothes — it could be that he felt a sense of pride wash over him, making him feel as if you were branded his now. he'd give you every top he owned and relish in the sight.
you were sat on the swing with a book on your lap as you swayed mindlessly. the sunlight bore down on you, illuminating your features in a manner that made you prettier than ever. he had just taken note that the t-shirt's length was long enough to cover the shorts you wore underneath. that allowed him to admire your plush thighs as they squeezed together to keep the book in place.
zoro just stared from the rails. he wanted to come sit by you and ask you why you were wearing his t-shirt. it was a simple question. it was not a difficult task. he had done so much worse before and he had never floundered.
so why did he feel so nervous in this moment?
he felt foolish that out of everything he was capable of doing, this is what rendered him hopeless. "i am so lame", he thought, mentally giving himself a face palm at his idiocy.
"zoro!", he heard your voice call him from the swing. "come here." he didn't think twice as he sauntered over to you and plopped himself in front of you.
"what's up?", he asked, combing through with his hair. only after he had sat down had he realised how close he actually was. if he bent forward just enough, he could rest his head on your thighs. that image alone turned his face into an even darker pink than it was before.
"nothing," you hummed whilst placing your book aside. "you kept looking here so i called you over."
he wanted to dig himself a hole. the fact that you had noticed him leering at you made him feel so abashed. he thought he was being discreet, stealing glances at you when you weren't looking. but wait... did that mean you had been staring back at him? that would be the only explanation, right? he did not want to get his hopes up but just thinking about that possibility made it nearly impossible for him to hold back the small smile that tugged at his lips.
zoro could sense that the silence that had fallen between you both was about to turn awkward so before he could stop himself, he blurted out, "why are you wearing my t-shirt?". it came out harsher than he had expected and that earned him a second mental face palm.
he saw your cheeks redden as you softly bunched up the end of the t-shirt in your hands. "how cute," he thought. your gaze averted his as you said, "well, it was laundry day for me and i didn't have any comfy clothes to wear so i just picked up a top i found that was clean."
and it was his.
"i hope you don't mind," you murmured. your hands now rested on either side of your legs and you pushed yourself forward, your faces now a few inches apart. the distance made his heart race and he swore if you were any closer you'd be able to hear it hammering. he could smell your dulcet scent wafting in the breeze, intoxicating his senses.
he cleared his throat as he croaked out, "no. it's fine. you can wear my stuff."
you smiled and brought your hand near his body. it hovered for a moment before your finger slipped into the collar of the t-shirt he was wearing. he felt your finger graze over his skin as you slowly ran it along the collar. his body tensed up under your touch, his mind turning hazy at your actions. "even this one?", you asked in a tone so sickeningly sweet, he had to restrain himself from pressing his lips onto yours.
he cleared his throat once more before replying, "yeah, wear whatever you like."
you let out a little giggle, removing your finger from his collar. you still hadn't moved back, your faces seemingly even closer than it had been several moments ago. he could feel your breath on his lips and the heat radiating from your body. if his eyes were not deceiving him, the blush that tinted your face had darkened.
"do you like when i wear your clothes?", you asked shyly. it was rather baffling to him that one second you seemed so brazen with your behaviour and the next you seemed so coy. it was admittedly one of his favourite things about you.
he had to reel himself back in from his thoughts that had begun conjuring up various romantic scenarios of the two of you. he peered at you with a docility that he reserved only for you. your entire face was glowing under the sun and he truly believed there wasn't anyone who could compare to you.
his voice came out quieter than he wanted but thankfully you had heard him, "yeah. because it's you."
had it not been for the proximity, he wouldn't have heard the tiny squeal that you let out. the amore he had for you had grown tenfold in that very moment. you slapped your hand over your mouth and shut your eyes, clearly embarrassed by your own reaction. he didn't know if you had meant to but you placed your forehead atop his, letting out a muffled groan.
zoro's eyes were the size of saucers. he was completely frozen, unaware of what to do. your eyes were still closed and your mouth still covered as you continued to grumble to yourself. it felt like you were saying something but he couldn't think of anything except for the fact that you were so close to him that everything around him had blurred. he did not move a muscle, fearing if he did then the moment would be torn away from him.
it was just you and him right now.
he did not know how he had managed to muster up the guts to do this or what compelled him to do so — he lifted his hand up to your face and gently pulled your hands down. your eyelids flickered open and your mouth was slightly agape. his gaze fell to your rosy lips, dreaming about how soft they looked and how kissable they looked. the things he would do to even get a peck from you. he imagined you'd taste heavenly.
your hands had found its way back to his t-shirt, this time scrunching it up in your grasp. zoro wanted nothing more than to pull you into his embrace. it took a great amount of constraint not to do so though since he didn't want you to feel uncomfortable or get upset with him. instead, his index finger carefully brushed over yours, tracing careless circles. it wasn't a grand gesture but he heard you hum at his actions, which suggested that you weren't averse to his advances. that sent him over the moon.
you had pulled yourself back, your face now in front of him. gingerly, you intertwined your fingers with his — his calloused, rough hands were such a stark contrast to your delicate, tender ones. he held onto them as if they were the most precious jewels the world had to offer, unintentionally drawing hearts all over.
he truly could stay like this forever...
"guys! it's time for lunch!", sanji yelled from the kitchen.
the sudden noise caused you both to jump, nearly making you fall off the swing. you stood up, grabbing your book and raced to the stairs. before you scurried up, you turned back to zoro, face completely flushed as you said nervously, "i'll return your t-shirt tonight!". then you dashed to the kitchen, slamming the door behind you.
zoro buried his head in his hands, letting out a miffed moan. "stupid love cook," he grumbled.

Various Heaven Official's Blessing thoughts I've had while reading, currently on book 4 (official publication version, book 3 for web publication) these are mostly going to be loose trains of thought.
- I am sad that Hua Cheng doesn't have a minion/friend that will just dunk on that man for his embarrassing crush on Xie Lian. It would be so funny just "so how was the kiss? What do you mean he had a panic attack? Are you that bad at kissing?????" It'd be very good trust.
- I'm convinced fengqing is in a situationship of some kind i am not convinced they know or figure out out before hualian get together. I do think that Xie Lian assumed that they had gotten together at some point while he was gone, he is shocked they aren't.
- I do like this story but I would also like more beautiful women to show up
- I want to be upfront that I like Qi Rong I think he's funny but I do hate him in the first flash back MXTX did an excellent job making him the most annoying little cousin and also a POS
I've finished the black water arc
- I was quite hyped about beefleaf before this arc and now I'm mildly conflicted because of the brother murder (the rest of it is just delicious toxicity), a good fic will probably resolve this conflict
- Xie Lian you have put your tongue down Hua Cheng's throat too many times to be telling puqi village that he's your blood brother
- Me pointing to Lang Ying in the scene where Xie Lian is in the bath: I know what you are (Hua Cheng badly in disguise)
Okay I'm done for now I'll be back when I have thoughts on book 5 let me know it I missed any tags

Why watch the super bowl when I could lie here imagining coming home to find you beached on the couch an hour later, too full of pizza and wings and nachos and beer to get up. When you hear my key in the lock, you panic, and try to hide how incredibly overglutted you are: you struggle to sit straighter or grab a throw cushion to hug in your lap. You try to shuffle the empty boxes and dead soldiers aside, so i don't see how many of them there are. You cross your arms over your chest and pretend you're just watching the aftershow. Everything is fine and normal. You are a responsible adult man, not some kind of drunken, binging teenager.
As if I wouldn't notice, but lord, how I like to watch you squirm. I play oblivious, forcing you to try harder and harder to cover your gluttony. You hungry? I was thinking of ordering chinese. Hey, can you reach over there and pass me my book? Look, I got you a drink! You looked like you could use something to help you unwind. I missed you, i need a hug and a cuddle... Well, well, well, what have we got here? What have you done to yourself? You silly man, look at you! You look like you've housed a keg. Did you drink all of those?! Yourself? I'd say I'm surprised, but...well... that would explain the gut, wouldn't it. Unbelievable.
But beneath my gleeful teasing, my temperature is mounting. I can feel my pulse between my legs. I wrap myself around you, one leg thrown over your lap, rubbing your belly to show off where you've grown fattest, but I'm already getting carried away. I want to hear you moan and pant, and I know several ways to extract that from you.
At first, it's because I'm touching you and kissing you where you are the most vulnerable and oversensitive, but soon it is because you know where this is going and ache with need. Then our eyes meet, and we both know that we're in it now. The wick has been lit. I want more, and you want to give it to me. We both crave what it does to the other. You relax and close your eyes patiently as I go fetch the funnel.

I should explain the popular conception of the war really quickly (you are much better off following up on the scholarship mentioned upthread for the complex and accurate version, but I want to tell you how your average Joe perceived the war).
Not long after 9/11 it was announced that the US government "found out" that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, that is, nuclear weapons and/or biological weapons, usually it was nukes that were the topic of discussion. The evidence was seen as wishy-washy ("some memo?") to nonexistent - this is what the post is talking about by unclear reasons, people largely didn't understand what obscure evidence the government had that they were using to justify the invasion, and of course we never did find anything that even smelled like a WMD. Consequently, much of the American public (it felt like every last person but the Republicans, and even some of them too - it wasn't entirely uncommon to hear conservatives say that sure, the war was bullshit but they still supported Bush's policies, as if the invasion was a forgivable offense) eventually came to the conclusion that this was a resource war over oil. "Bush lied, people died" was a common chant (find me one city in the US circa twenty years ago that didn't have that phrase spraypainted somewhere) and so was "no blood for oil." There was even kind of a popular conspiracy theory that the Bush administration engineered the 9/11 attacks to have an excuse to invade oil-rich territory in SWANA.
So, I want to clarify that there was a commonly-accepted propaganda reason - WMDs along with Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein allegedly sponsoring al-Qaeda, the terrorist group held responsible for 9/11 - as well as a commonly-accepted "real" reason.
Basically, what I'm trying to say here is that people weren't going around like, "hey, why are we in Iraq again?" but people were saying "hey, where's the proof that Iraq has WMDs again?" and most of us couldn't even explain what the murky propaganda evidence was. (Again: "some memo?") These are kind of two different things, so I want to make the history clear.
Again, this addition is just dealing with what people broadly thought about it. It was perceived by many as a pretty clear situation. If you want to read about the rationale in full complexity, and you should, I think To Start a War: How the Bush Administration Took America into Iraq by Robert Draper and Melvyn P. Leffler's Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq are good picks, especially the latter, as Leffler is a historian of American foreign policy and was able to talk to a lot of people directly responsible for the war, such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
However, these are history books and not scholarship by people like historians of imperialism, so I welcome additional recommendations and any criticisms of the books anyone more informed than I am might have. (I think some may find Leffler's treatment a bit lenient, but the top officials he was able to interview make this kind of an indispensable resource in my opinion.)
I missed most of the Iraq war due to being a baby, but every time I read about it I start wondering why we aren’t all talking about it all of the time
