Some ‘The Namesake’ (Jhumpa Lahiri) Cheat Notes

Characters:

Gogol (Nikhil) Ganguli -  The novel’s primary protagonist. Gogol is an obedient, inquisitive, and sensitive child, close to his parents and sister. The novel tracks Gogol’s growth from child into young man. This growth includes changing his name, to Nikhil, and the gradual discovery of architecture as a career. Gogol navigates, over time, his relationship to his parents’ identity, as Bengalis in America. He also tries to forge his own identity, as a Bengali-American child born in the US. At the close of the novel, Gogol begins reading Nikolai Gogol, his namesake, as a way of getting closer to his deceased father, who adored the writer.

Ashima Ganguli -  Another of the novel’s protagonists. Ashima, at the beginning of the novel, does not make choices so much as she accepts the choices of others. Her parents arrange her marriage to Ashoke, and out of duty she follows him to cold, desolate-seeming Boston. She grows to love her husband, and, later, her son Gogol and daughter Sonia. But for years, Ashima misses her family in Calcutta and yearns desperately for her old life there. Only after many years, and following her husband’s death while away in Ohio, does Ashima realize that the Boston area is her home, and that she is surrounded by friends and a surrogate family there.

Ashoke Ganguli -  The third of the novel’s protagonists. Ashoke is a quiet, sensitive man, and although the narrator does not have access to many of his thoughts, he is nevertheless devoted to his wife and children. Ashoke is also deeply affected by the train accident that nearly killed him in his youth. He gives his son the name Gogol as an acknowledgment of what that writer means to him. Nikolai Gogol and the other Russian writers are also emblems of “foreignness,” of a life lived in exile. This is the life Ashoke has chosen for himself, as a PhD student and then professor in the US, far from his family in Calcutta. Ashoke chose to set out for himself, in a place of his choosing, after the train accident solidified his resolve to see the world.

Sonia Ganguli -  The fourth member of the Ganguli family in Boston. Although the reader very rarely has access to Sonia’s thoughts, she is a constant, calming presence for the family. She goes to school and lives for a time in California, but after Ashoke’s death, Sonia returns to the Boston area, where she practices law and becomes engaged to a man named Ben. Sonia is a steadying presence for Ashima after Ashoke’s passing.

Moushumi -  Gogol’s wife. Moushumi knew Gogol when he was a young boy, and the two are set up on a blind date, in New York, by their parents. Moushumi is a graduate student in French literature and adores Paris. She also adores, in part, the cosmopolitan life she lived there, with a banker named Graham, who left her and broke her heart. Moushumi marries Gogol but, after a time, becomes restless in the marriage, and enjoys more and more the company of her intellectual friends. Moushumi begins an affair with Dimitri, an old acquaintance, and later she and Gogol divorce. Moushumi’s point of view is included, though not frequently, in the novel. We learn, for example, of the dissolution of Moushumi’s first engagement, to the American banker, via access to her own thoughts, although the narrator retains the third person in these sections.

Maxine Ratliff -  Gogol’s second serious girlfriend. Maxine and Gogol meet in New York, at a party. Maxine represents, for Gogol, a life very different from his own. She lives with her parents downtown, in a beautiful townhouse, and shares their intellectual, cosmopolitan life. Maxine does not always understand Gogol’s family’s traditions, but she tries to, and seems to care genuinely for him. After Ashoke’s death, Gogol pulls away from Maxine, leaving her out of the mourning ceremonies. They soon separate.

Ruth -  Nikhil’s first serious girlfriend. Gogol and Ruth meet on the train, from New Haven to Boston, heading back to their respective homes for a Thanksgiving break in college. They both attend Yale. They fall in love and spend about a year together, but Ruth then goes away to Oxford to study for a semester. After this, their relationship becomes strained, and they part.

Dimitri Desjardins -  an aimless academic, and Moushumi’s illicit lover. Dimitri met Moushumi when she was in high school and he was applying to PhD programs. Moushumi finds Dimitri’s information by change, and they begin an affair. Moushumi knows that her tryst with Dimitri is wrong, and that he is something of a slob and a dilettante. But this does not keep her from the affair.

Gerald And Lydia Ratliff -  Maxine’s parents. Wealthy and intellectually inclined, Gerald and Lydia open their home to Nikhil, whom they seem to admire. They are comfortable in their world of New York society, and though they are kind to Gogol, he never quite feels a part of their circle.

Donald And Astrid -  Moushumi’s intellectual friends in Brooklyn. Donald and Astrid are, in Nikhil’s mind, the kind of people who find their own choices to be the only correct ones. Although Donald and Astrid seem open and liberal, they are in fact quite set in their ways. Nikhil is frustrated by what he views as their selfishness.

Graham -  Moushumi’s ex-fiancé. A banker in Paris, Graham, an American, moves back to America with Moushumi, and they plan a life together. But Moushumi realizes that Graham has reservations about the traditions that come with marrying a Bengali-American, and they break up.

Ghosh -  a businessman Ashoke meets on his ill-fated train ride. Ghost tells Ashoke that living abroad is important for any young man. Ghosh himself lived in England until his wife made him return to India. Ghosh tells Ashoke to visit him at his home during the train ride, but Ashoke never has the chance, as Ghosh is killed in the wreck.

Ashima’s Father -  an illustrator in Calcutta. Ashima’s father dies in Chapter 2, as the family is preparing to return to India to visit. His death is very difficult for Ashima, who feels distant from her family.

Ashima’s Grandmother -  given the ceremonial job of naming Gogol. Ashima’s grandmother suffers a stroke early in the novel, in Calcutta, and though she mails a letter with Gogol’s “official” name in it, the letter never arrives. She dies soon after.

The Nandis And Dr. Gupta -  Bengali friends of Ashoke’s and Ashima’s in Cambridge. These three visit the Gangulis in the hospital in Cambridge, after Gogol is born.

Alan And Judy -  Ashoke and Ashima’s neighbors in Cambridge. Alan and Judy are free-spirits and liberals, and though Ashoke and Ashima find them nice and compassionate to live near, they are also confused by the informality of Alan and Judy’s lives, and by the cavalier way in which Alan and Judy raise and keep track of their children.

Symbols:

Trains - Trains appear again and again in Lahiri’s novel, and twice a train accident plays a significant role in the story. The first is the devastating accident in Ashoke’s past, which he barely survives, and the second is when an unknown person commits suicide on the tracks of a train that is carrying Gogol home from Yale. The presence of trains in the novel seems to be a reminder of the constant and inevitable forward motion of life, which advances and accumulates outside of anyone’s control, as Gogol reflects at the end of the novel. It is on a train that Gogol meets Ruth, and on a train that he discovers Moushumi’s affair. Trains also represent motion, travel, and distance, and are a reminder that the novel’s main characters are divided between homes, constantly unsettled.

Graves - In a few moments in the novel, Gogol thinks with longing of the idea of a grave—a place that will bear his legacy into the future, and give him or his family a permanent physical anchor in space. In reality, he knows they will never have such a grave, since in the Hindu tradition their bodies will be cremated. Gogol is first struck by this desire on a fieldtrip to a graveyard of early American settlers, whose odd names give him a sense of kinship with these early immigrants. The feeling reoccurs when he sees the Ratliff’s family graveyard and pictures Maxine returning to this place to bury her parents.

Tone:

Sympathetic 

"And yet the familiarity that had once drawn her to him has begun to keep her at bay. Though she knows it's not his fault, she can't help but associate him, at times, with a sense of resignation, with the very life she has resisted, has struggled so mightily to leave behind." (9.17) 

Moushomi could have been written off as an evil hag after cheating on Gogol but the way the story is written prevents us from viewing her as such; her story is written kindly and we're brought close to her, which allows us to understand her.

Quotes:

"You remind me of everything that followed." (Ashoke)

This is the answer to Gogol's question, "Do I remind you of that night?" Ashoke has just revealed to Gogol why he chose that name for him: because the collection of short stories by Nikolai Gogol had allowed him to be identified by rescue workers after the train crash that nearly killed him. This answer draws attention to the tension between life and death; from an accident that nearly cost him his life, his father has emerged and wants to be reminded of the new life he created in his son by giving him the name Gogol.

"It wasn't me." (Gogol)

Gogol gives this explanation to his high school friends after he shares his first kiss with Kim at a college party. When Kim asks him what his name is, he can't imagine telling her it's Gogol - he identifies Gogol as the type of person who could never kiss a girl. Therefore, he tells her his name is Nikhil, and then he has the confidence to kiss her. Later, when he himself is in college, he will permanently change his name to Nikhil and gain confidence with women as a result.

"Gogol frowns, and his lower lip trembles. Only then, forced at six months to confront his destiny, does he begin to cry." (2.71)

At six months, Gogol is already refusing to participate in traditional Indian rituals. He's not ready to confront his destiny, and for much of the book, we wonder if he ever will be.

"He is afraid to be Nikhil, someone he doesn't know. Who doesn't know him […] It's a part of growing up, they tell him, of being a Bengali." (3.19)

In kindergarten, Gogol tries on a new, more formal name – and doesn't like it one bit, even though having a pet name and a formal name is Bengali custom. What's interesting here is that he thinks changing his name just might change his identity. He'll become a different person.

Literary Elements:

Imagery Imagery is the use of a profuse amount of description to help create an image  in our minds. This is used many times in this book, given that a lot of what takes up the book is description of what happens throughout Gogol’s life along with that of his family’s.  In fact, it is even used in the first page. Describing the home of Ashima and Ashoke, saying:

“She stares blankly at the pegboard behind the countertop where her cooking utensils hang, all slightly coated with grease. She wipes sweat from her face with the free end of her sari. Her swollen feet ache against speckled gray linoleum.”

With just a few sentences, the author has already created a picture in the mind of the readers, giving a great example of imagery.

Allusion Allusion is basically a reference to another well-known person, piece of writing, etc. An example of this in the novel is the multiple references to Nikolai Gogol throughout the entire novel. He was a Russian author, whom Gogol was named after, his name being a recurring issue throughout the book. There is a scene in which Gogol’s father, Ashoke, gives him a book called The Short Stories of Nikolai Gogol, a book by the Russian author

Nen and Characters: Menthuthuyoupi

In Pouf and Pito’s meta I underlined how the two characters are used to explore the concept of empathy which is fundamental in the CAA.

Youpi too, as a character, is used in the same way.

However, while Pouf and Pito’s relevance to the theme of empathy is linked to their ability and inability to relate and understand a person they care about, Youpi develops empathy through the interactions with his enemies.

When it comes to this, he has an arc which is somehow similar to Meruem’s since both characters grow thanks to their interactions with humans rather than to their relationships with members of the same species.

In the end, however, Meruem chooses to be human:

Whereas Youpi chooses to be an ant:

This meta will try to show why.

A BEAST MEETING SOCIETY: YOUPI AND KNUCKLE

Youpi’s primary ability is the ability to change his shape as he wants. It is an ability which is physical and which may be connected to Youpi’s heritage as a magical beast.

As a matter of fact among the three Royal Guards Youpi is the only one who was created from a magical beast instead of a human. This has influenced his personality making him less prone to being individualistic:

And individualism is what the narrative potrays as the major attribute that makes humans different from the Chimera Ants:

In short, among the three Royal Guards and probably among all the Ants, Youpi is the most beast-like and the one with the simplest personality and the weakest sense of self.

Now, when it comes to the hunters’s side, there is a character who is introduced as a beast hunter, is highly empathetic and willing to help all living beings and wants to try to communicate with the Ants:

Knuckle is a character who contrasts Youpi on many levels. As a matter of fact, while Youpi represents the wilderness of nature, Knuckle represents society which tries to tame nature.

This seems to be supported by not only Knuckle’s job as beast hunter, but also by his nen power:

Potclean is basically a metaphor for how a bank works and a bank is something which is deeply rooted in how human societies work.

Youpi’s power on the other hand is something extremely simple, but incredibly powerful and it might represent the force of nature humans can never fully control, but still try to bend:

The fact the whole battle between Youpi and the hunters consists in the hunters trying to incapacitate Youpi by having him binded by Potclean is symbolic of the attempts of human society to modify and restrict nature. This is a central theme of the whole arc since the CAA is about asking the question if humans can survive an incredibly powerful force of nature.

And humans are able to slowly provoke a change in Youpi, not as they expected through their strength and powers, but thanks to their interactions with him.

Fighting with the hunters has a role in making so that Youpi’s inner world becomes deeper:

This transformation becomes obvious the moment Youpi chooses not to kill Morau and to let him and Knuckle go. He does so because fighting with them made him appreciate their tenacity and valour and Knuckle’s willingness to trust Youpi’s word in order to save Morau leads the royal guard to display honour and pride as well.

In short, Youpi managed to create a relationship with his foes thanks to him fighting them. However, this relationship turns out to be extremely frail:

Through meeting Knuckle and the other hunters Youpi experiences a part of society he likes, but the Rose shows him that there are other sides of humanity which are less beautiful and admirable.

Let us also underline how Youpi displays honour in his interactions with Morau and Knuckle and how it is obvious he learnt it thanks to them. However, the Rose is something which is definately not honourable:

In short, Youpi learns humans can be interesting, but by then he lacks the knowledge about how terrible they can be. The moment he gains said knowledge he refuses what he had just learnt instead of integrating it with the new information he is given and starts hating humanity again.

All in all, Youpi’s arc and his dynamic with Knuckle especially show the limits of empathy. The two of them start to develop a positive relationship, but the moment the conflict between their two species becomes more serious they are both forced to realize how communicating with each other is difficult:

As a matter of fact, not only Youpi, but Knuckle too has to give up his hope that the conflict could be settled in a pacific way the moment he meets Pouf’s copy and sees his reaction to the Rose.

In short, Youpi’s story is the story of a beast who meets  humanity. He discovers the best of it thanks to his interactions with Knuckle, Morau and Killua and he discovers the worst of it thanks to him seeing the effects of the Rose. His inability to accept it afterwards is what makes so that he isn’t able to maintain a positive development and regresses.

YOUPI’S JOURNEY TOWARDS HUMANITY: YOUPI’S RAGE

Youpi’s power is initially presented as a purely physical ability. However, it becomes obvious almost immediately that it is actually a power which mirrors Youpi’s interiority and so it becomes deeper as Youpi’s emotions become more complex.

When it comes to this, Youpi’s ability can be read in two ways.

a) Youpi’s physical transformations mirror Youpi’s journey towards humanity and its abrupt interruption.

b) Youpi’s powers underline his character flaw and his attempt to overcome it which in the end fails.

a) Youpi appears with three distinctive appearances.

1)

This is his default appearance and it represents his starting point. It is somehow humanoid, but it maintains bestial attributes. Moreover, this appearance has been modified several times making Youpi look more monster-like.

2)

This is the form Youpi obtains when he learns to control his powers better. The fact that he appears like a centaur is interesting in itself. As a matter of fact centaurs are creatures who are half-human and half-animals. In short, it is perfect to symbolize the fact Youpi is half-way in his trasformation into a human. Moreover, centaurs, according to the Greek myth, are said to have both human virtues (like wisdom) and human flaws (like lust and violence), but they are both extreme. This fits both Youpi who has been shown to be able of astonishing growth and honor, but also of ruthless violence and Youpi’s experience of humanity. As mentioned above Youpi is a witness of both the best and the worst of humanity and fails to reconcile these two opposites.

In short, Youpi’s centaur-like form embodies how, at that point, Youpi is caught up in the contradictions of his own double nature and is approaching a crossroad where he will have to choose who he wants to be.

3)

Youpi’s final form represents Youpi’s final choice and ultimate regression. Let us underline that, before he assumes it by feeding the King with his cells, he had already left his centaur-form behind:

Here, Youpi is regretting his previous choice of not killing Knuckle, Meleoron and Morau and is refusing what he had previously learnt about humanity. He is choosing to be an ant and the fact that, by the end, he has basically become the size of an insect and a smaller version of his initial form underlines it.

b)

Youpi’s character flaw is rage and it is embodied by his power . As a matter of fact in his battle with the hunters he ends up caught up in his own anger and since his physical transformation mirrors his interiority he literally explodes in rage:

These explosions represent metaphorically a way of dealing with anger which is not healthy and which can end up being counter-productive for Youpi. This is underlined both by the fact that, despite feeling pleasure when exploding, Youpi feels desperate and empty immediately after:

And by the fact that, while swelling up, Youpi is left vulnerable to enemies’ attacks.

Once again Youpi’s physical strength and psychological well-being are linked and to be more precise Youpi’s emotions directly influence his physical manifestations.

While fighting, Youpi evolves and becomes able to better control his emotions:

Until he develops a new power:

The name of this power is literally Rage Incarnate and it refers to the fact that Youpi has gained it by trying to accumulate rage in order to then release it against a specific object and not indiscriminately.

This is an evolution when it comes to Youpi’s approach at dealing with rage and it lets Youpi become calmer and start thinking about things in a way which embraces complexity:

However, as stated above, Youpi himself is not sure this represents an evolution or a regression. The answer to this question depends on the final choice between humanity and being an ant. If Youpi were to choose humanity, then him being able to start thinking on his own (so him basically developing an individuality) would have been an evolution. However, in the end Youpi chooses to be an ant until the end and so he comes to see his previous development as a mistake.

Interestingly, when it happens, Youpi interrupts his attempt to figure out the object of his rage and simply gives in to it:

In short, Youpi in the end fails to overcome his character flaw and this is linked to his final choice of being an ant. As a matter of fact the concept of “rage” in the arc is used as symbolic of a loss of humanity and it is used against the concept of “empathy”. The next section will try to underline it by contrasting Youpi with Meruem.

YOUPI AND MERUEM: RAGE AND EMPATHY

As it has been stated above, Youpi and Meruem parallel each other in several ways.

Both are introduced like the most beast-like among the ants (to see why I say so about Meruem, check this meta), both manage to develop respect for humans thanks to a relationship with one of them, but both regress because of the Rose (which is symbolically the worst of humanity). However, by the end they make opposite choices.

Why?

Two reasons can be given.

a) Let us consider the two powers Meruem gains after his “rebirth”.

One is Pouf’s Spiritual Message.

The other is Youpi’s Rage Blast.

They are two powers which represent respectively empathy and anger. These two qualities are two qualities linked to both humanity and the ants and to be more precise they represent the two sides of humanity. They also go in each other’s way. Rage doesn’t let the characters empathize, whereas empathy lets characters overcome their rage.

This is something which happens with several characters: Gon, Youpi, Palm and Knuckle all have moments where they have to either choose to give in to their anger or to try to empathize. When anger wins like in Gon and Youpi’s case, then empathy is discarded, while when the character manages to empathize they usually overcome their rage.

This is what metaphorically happens to Palm both in her fight against Killua and in her confrontation with Meurem, for example. In her battle with Killua she is covered with an armor born from her anger, but she manages to connect with Killua and she releases her armor. Similarly, she overcomes her rage against Meruem and activates her Wink Blue which, as I stated here, is nothing more than a metaphor for empathy itself.

Now, Meruem having both powers is symbolic of him having reached a point where he, like humans, has within itself both positive and negative attributes. He has now to choose which one he wants to cultivate and who he wants to be. If he chooses rage and its brute force he chooses to be an ant, while if he chooses empathy and its subtlety he chooses to be human.

Youpi chooses rage and to be an ant.

Meruem in the end chooses empathy and this is shown also by the fact that between the two powers he ends up using Shaiapouf’s much more often than Youpi’s. Moreover, when he uses Youpi’s Rage Blast, this ability has no effect:

The fact that physical attacks have no effect on Potclean has thematic resonance. As a matter of fact, as explained above, Potclean (and basically all of the hunters’ powers really) represents society. Rage Blast failing to eliminate it is then symbolic of how brute force is useless against society and how in order to tear society and humanity apart more creative solutions are needed. Because of this, maybe it is not a coincidence that Potclean keeps being dispelled thanks to powers symbolic of empathy, like Spiritual Message, which lets Meruem find Knuckle, or thanks to meaningful interactions between characters:

In short, rage and empathy are symbolic of the best and the worst of humanity and of human and animal nature of both ants and humans. Youpi and Meruem's different conclusions mirror their respective choice when it comes to these two attributes.

2) Meruem and Youpi go through similar experiences, but why does Meruem’s relationship with Komugi manage to overcome the Rose, while Youpi’s one with the hunters doesn’t?

Several answers can be given, but the one I am mostly interested in is that Youpi and the hunters’ relationship was a rivalry born while fighting each other in a war, whereas Meruem and Komugi was a rivalry born in a context where violence was absent.

It is true that for Meruem and Komugi Gungi was an extremely important game and basically a war in and for itself and that Komugi especially was betting her own life, but as time passes it becomes more than just that and they start genuinely enjoying fighting each other on a chessboard.

Now, a similar thing could have happened to Youpi and the hunters as well, but the conflict between their two species went in the way. The Rose which represents the ugliness of society and its short-comings ended up destroying a relationship which was just being formed.

War and violence go in the way of relationships. This is why Meruem and Komugi’s relationship which is not a relationship born between enemies doesn’t resent of the larger conflict, whereas Youpi and the hunters’ one which is born at the heart of the conflict does.

In conclusion, Youpi and the other two Royal Guards explore what empathy is about. Pito explores what empathy is, Pouf what it is not and Youpi the limits of empathy. He starts developing one, but at the same time the ugliness of the conflict strips it away from him before it can be rooted enough in his character.

General Comments As we go on with our continuous reading of St Mark’s gospel, we find Jesus in Galilee where he starts his public ministry.

This passage is in three parts: – verses 21-22: a summary of the teaching of Jesus in the synagogue; – verses 23 to 27: an example of his ministry of driving out unclean spirits; – verse 28: the effect of Jesus’ ministry.

In the first section, the emphasis is on the contrast between Jesus and the scribes. Here the scribes are symbolical of those who are content to record the teachings of others; Jesus speaks with personal authority.

In verse 28 St Mark evokes, as he often does in his gospel, the spread of Jesus’ reputation. Ask yourself how the passage if being fulfilled today, of the church or of any great movement.

Prayer Reflections

Lord, when we look back on our lives we realize that most of those who gave us moral teachings spoke platitudes. They were scribes recording what others had said. But we thank you that from time to time you sent us someone like Jesus who spoke from their own experience, and shared honestly what they were feeling; these made a deep impression on us, because unlike scribes they spoke with authority.

“When the church concerns herself with the development of peoples, she cannot be accused of going outside her own specific field of competence, and still less outside the mandate received from the Lord.”     ...Pope John Paul II, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis

Lord, when the church confines herself to going to the synagogue and teaching, concerning herself with what is internal to her, many are happy – they rejoice that she is making a deep impression on them. But your will is that we should go further and cast out the demons of our society – racism, class conflicts, discrimination against the disadvantaged. When the church does this there are convulsions and loud cries. We thank you that in many countries the church has persevered in following Jesus, and people have been astonished and questioned themselves, and her reputation has spread as one who gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey her.

Lord, we remember a time when we were held in bondage by an inner force: – we could not forgive; – we did not want to commit ourselves because we were afraid of failure; – ambition was clouding our vision of the truth. Then someone began to speak, challenging us to face the truth – one of our children, a friend, a bible passage. We got angry, denied it vehemently, wept, complained to another. Like the man in the gospel, we went into convulsions and cried aloud. We realize now that it was because we knew that the Holy One of God was with us, he had come to do away with our sin. Eventually, after a long struggle, we recognized the demon for what it was, and it went out of us. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, prayer is a moment when we pass from experiencing the teaching of Jesus as something vague to knowing that it has authority behind it, it gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey it.

Lord, a movement will spread only of it moves from teaching in a closed room to casting out the unclean spirits which are oppressing society.

Introduction to the Celebration

In today’s gospel we hear of the reactions of people on encountering Jesus when they were gathered as a community: they encountered him as a brother, as a unique teacher, and as the Holy One of God. In our gathering today we are encountering him as our brother, our teacher, and the Holy One of God who is calling us together to share his supper.

Homily Notes

1. Hearing the story about the possessed man brings a shiver to some of us, and a wry smile for others. For some, it is the tingly fringe of religion, an unsettling fear, and brings to mind films about possession or exorcism. This is where faith meets the eerie and the weird. For others, this is part of the historical dross that comes with Christianity having arisen before the modern psychiatry: it is just one more bit that needs to be dumped. For most people in an average congregation it will just be an item that does not seem important one way or the other: another bit of religion that just slips over us.

2. It is probably worthwhile acknowledging this range of reactions in the congregation. All too often people imagine that they, as individuals, are the only ones who have such reactions to the readings, and imagine that for the priest there are no such problems. This suspicion then breeds a form of alienation that makes people feel that they ‘deep down’ do not belong in the gathering.

3. So what can we learn from this passage despite our reactions to the exorcism? The whole passage is in the gospel to help a small group of Christians in the latter half of the first century to understand who Jesus is whom they are confessing to be ‘The Holy One of God.’ We can take ‘Holy One of God,’ the ‘Anointed One,’ and ‘The Christ’ to be just different forms of the same reality. Mark intended his preaching to be heard by the group when they gathered for the sacred meal which united them with one another and with the risen Christ, and so our hearing this gospel today is hearing it in a more formalised version of its original setting. So what aspect of faith in Jesus did Mark want to emphasise? Here lies the key to the passage: he wanted the gatherings to have an adequate appreciation of Jesus as the Christ.

4. Note that we are concerned with an adequate – adequate for us to realise that he is the Way – not a complete understanding: such might be possible in heaven, but never on earth. All the saints can testify that after a life-long pilgrimage of faith,they are just scratching the surface in understanding the significance of the Christ.

5. Mark was concerned that people hearing about Jesus might just imagine him as another preacher – so he adds that the people who encountered him were struck by his uniqueness: he was a teacher like no other. But Mark, equally, did not want people to think of him just as the greatest teacher: Jesus having come among us does the Father’s will, he liberates people from their demons, and he brings new life. But Mark, yet again, does not want Jesus just seen as a wonder-worker, a magician, so people must keep all these insights and try to understand them at the foot of the Cross. Only when we follow the teacher, the liberator, the one who suffered, and the one who rose from the dead do we start to imagine the mystery of the Holy One of God.

6. Getting some grasp of who we encounter in Jesus the Christ is the work of a lifetime. Sadly, many people think they know all about him. Our reflections here do not tell us who Jesus is; they merely attune us to being aware of the Holy One who encounters us in our loves, our trials, our fears, our talents,our demons, and right now in our gathering, our praying together, and our sharing in his banquet.

Gospel Notes

A dominant aspect of Jesus’ work in proclaiming the good news of the kingdom in Mark is his role as a teacher and this is particularly evident in the early chapters. Here we see his teaching making a deep impression on his hearers and they respond with wonder and astonishment. In this teaching Jesus was, no doubt, speaking of God’s will for the world in terms that were easily understood by his hearers. Added to this, his action of exorcising demons can be understood as a way of indicating the triumph of good over evil and showing that now is the time to respond with faith to God’s action in the world. The prevalence of exorcisms in the gospels is not to be taken as suggesting there was more demonic possession then than now. It is more likely that these accounts reflect ancient views around a range of illnesses that are more easily diagnosed nowadays.

Reflection

In this age of information technology and instant access to information and entertainment, we probably appreciate more than ever the worth of a really good teacher. It is an aspect of Jesus’ ministry that can easily be lost sight of, and that is a pity because it is more important that we understand his message than that we believe he was a miracle worker. As disciples we are challenged to continue to grow in understanding, to sit at the feet of Jesus the teacher and to take steps to make our own the wonderful good news of the kingdom. By being properly informed, we are less likely to be led astray by the whole range of ‘false prophets’ who today compete for our allegiance.

The Power of Evil

Jesus was very aware of the power of evil that can be around us. Jesus named the spirit whatever that meant. This gave him power over the spirit. He knew evil when he met it and he overcame it, with love, power and with kindness for this man.

In Jesus the good and the evil of the world met.

One big evil in us is the ‘it’s mine’. We learn it from childhood.  We take the plate of cakes or a packet of sweets and say “all mine”.  We normally get over this but not always.  We need the conversion from it’s mine to it’s ours. That’s the christian way.  The environment is not ours, but for us. We have no right to kill off  livelihood all over the world for our paper, our oil and our greed.  Any abuse of people is the ‘you are mine’ syndrome.  Nobody owns anyone in this earth and we belong only to God in a free way.

Evil will never win out to the end. It has been conquered on the Cross, with love.

Somehow this man was possessed. Evil came into him and maybe it was not his fault. He left clean and whole, with a kindness in his heart he would never forget.  The people were amazed not just at Jesus but at the change in the man who had been possessed.

What are evil desires in myself?For control of others, for greed, for whatever leads me away from love.Imagine the light of God filling the darkness in me.Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

2. The Neverending Story -  Muse/Lord & The rules of Paradox Space

[Spoilers for The Neverending Story]

I’m not the first to note Homestuck’s references to AURYN, the magical amulet from The Neverending Story. The symbol of the intertwined black and white snakes is directly referenced only twice in Homestuck’s story, and both times it tells us a mind-boggling amount about the nature and function of Homestuck’s universe. 

And even that only scratches the surface. So instead of starting off with Homestuck itself, let me tell you a little bit about The Neverending Story itself.

The Neverending Story is a book split in two. In the most commonly printed version, it comes in Red and Green text halves. The real world, the realm of humans where you and I live--those sections are printed in Red. Fantastica, the world of fiction and stories and all things imaginary, is printed in green.

And as with two sections, The Neverending Story is split into two central figures:

The Childlike Empress, and Bastian Balthazar Bux.

Muse & Lord

In the green-lettered plains of Fantastica, The Childlike Empress rules over all. Although her authority is accepted by even the most evil and mostrous in Fantastica, she never gives orders. Even so, she is both eternal and eternally childlike. Good and evil are equal in her eyes. 

Sometimes called the Golden-Eyed Commander of Wishes, The Childlike Empress’ authority only manifests when she grants her gem of wish-fulfilling powers--AURYN--to another. This other is treated as though the Empress herself were present, and acts as an emmisary for her.

She is the embodiment of Fantasy itself, inspiring others to act out her will. She is a question, a mystery, a wonder. She is, in short...A Muse. 

And she has a direct parallel in Calliope, who similarly draws no distinction between good and evil (people forget that she read what was likely the worst of Vriska without being exposed to her growth, and seemingly wanted to be friends with her anyway)...

And who similarly has absolute power over reality, yet never gives orders, even as the entire narrative is shaped around her. Just as with the Childlike Empress, without Calliope’s existence, none of the other characters in the comic can exist either. 

Everyone is entangled in and created by Lord English’s Alpha Timeline, but that web is Calliope’s as well, and she’s causally entangled in the creation of all four of the universes we follow. 

And again like the Childlike Empress, Calliope who bestows her Symbol on others, granting AURYN to humans--an emblem which endows in the wearer the ability to make any wish come true. 

Hell, Calliope even seems not to grow up normally in Act 7 and [S] Credits. A Childlike Empress indeed. And as for her counterpart? Bastian may not be as much of a jerk as Caliborn, but the parallels between them are even more explicit:

Where The Childlike Empress is a Muse only by implication, Bastian is textually and demonstrably a Lord. 

But let’s back up a bit.

Bastian Balthazar Bux is a little boy who steals a book named “The Neverending Story” from a bookshop and hides in his school to read it in one sitting. His sections, those taking place in the Human world, typically feature text colored Red.

However, around the halfway point of The Neverending Story, he realizes that the story is not only aware of him, but calling out to him. And he eventually finds himself pulled into the realm of Fantastica. 

Bastian is a human, you see, and only humans can create stories--the inhabitants of Fantastica themselves cannot. And once the Childlike Empress is reborn with a new name, Fantastica must be reborn as well. So The Childlike Empress meets Bastian in the void between the two realms of Fantastica, and gives him the amulet AURYN, the symbol of her power. 

And so, she entrusts him with a quest: To fulfill his wishes in Fantastica, and re-create the realm of Fantasy as he goes.

Incidentally, receiving AURYN also changes Bastian’s race. Bastian is explicitly white, but upon arriving in Fantastica transforms into “a young prince from the Orient”. I’m not sure why that even happens, to be honest? Let’s note that this book is from, like, 1979 and definitely not perfect.

Anyway, I only mention it because this lends some credence to my assertion that Trickster Mode’s whiteness is not at all tied to the “actual race” of the kids-- since whatever that race is, changing it would be within AURYN’s power.

To be honest, I should’ve noted that was explicit earlier, since Homestuck all but explicitly states that Tricksterfied Cherubs would look like Lil Cal, which definitely entails a primary skin color swap. And there, as with Humans, the transformation always renders the subject Caucasian-looking.

Now, where were we?

Ah, right. So, the first thing you might notice is that Bastian’s ascent to Lordship also coincides with him leaving the World of Men and entering the World of Fantasy/Ideas. 

Which strikes his first echo with Caliborn. Both characters’ entries into power are marked by changing their text color to Green--the color of their respective Muse figures. And like Calliope dies for Caliborn to Enter, The Childlike Empress disappears from Fantastica as soon as Bastian becomes it’s Lord. 

Bastian spends most of his adventure in the realm seeking to meet her once more, on some level--just as Lord English spends an eternity in the Void, trying to find and destroy the Calliopes.

And during his search, Bastian also accrues subjects and followers who carry out his will. Bastian is adored for his ability to create stories--which instantly become Real-- across Fantastica. With The Childlike Empress’ AURYN around his neck, nothing can resist his will. Bastian becomes, for all intents and purposes, a God. 

Although he loses his humanity little by little with every wish he makes. The memory of being weak, the memory of being ugly, the memory of being scared-- as Bastian travels, he grows more self-satisfied and arrogant, desiring the adoration of others without true regard for their feelings and hearts. 

Until in the end, he’s exploiting those he calls friends through sheer force of will. At this point, Bastian seeks to replace The Childlike Empress entirely, attempting to become the Childlike Emperor--just as Lord English seeks to emulate Calliope through a multitude of stylistic choices in his personal aesthetic. 

I think banditAffiliate puts it well in this forum post:

“Doc Scratch was born to serve as Lord English's other half, replacing the role Calliope served when the two shared one body. From Caliborn's warped perspective, the two share many similarities. They're both wordy, intelligent, and (as Caliborn saw her) quite smug. He scrapbooks with a ~ATH book like she did, and carries her weapon. In addition to being a pastiche of his sister, Scratch is also a symbol of his other weakness, the cue ball. Both are heralded to be the key to his defeat, after all. He does double duty then by killing Scratch, hatching out of his body and growing more powerful (by assimilating Scratch's first guardian powers), "predominating" over him and asserting his dominance over both his vulnerabilities once again.”

And Bastian, well...

Sound familiar at all? 

By the end, Bastian is at risk of becoming what is essentially a Yaldabaoth--an arrogant God with full dominion over his material reality, but blind to the world of ideas outside of him. 

Luckily, Bastian escapes this fate, and goes on to live a happy life, becoming a world-renowed storyteller. His path is not the path of the Lord forever. But that is another story, and shall be told another time. 

There’s one last thing to note about AURYN, because it appears in two places in Homestuck. There’s the Lollipop, yes--and by linking AURYN to the Cherubs, we learn a great deal about both Muse and Lord, Calliope and Caliborn.

But AURYN’s impact is a bit more far-reaching than just them. 

The emblem is also depicted during the mating ritual of Cherubs, remember? And it’s important to view this image in context, because as Aranea tells us...

Mating Cherubs tap into the forces of power presiding over all that is eternal. Cherubs are linked to the primordial forces of reality by their nature. The source of Cherub’s powers is their intrinsic connection to the flow and nature of reality. Which suggests that the principle that AURYN is inscribed with, the principle that guides the power of its magic, is also the fundamental principle of Homestuck’s universe. Cherubs are simply beings with a unique ability to tap directly into it. And that principle is...

“Do As You Will.”

Nothing in Homestuck’s reality happens except by the Will of someone living inside it. Individual will is the backbone of all events and objects, all circumstances and beings, all people and universes in Homestuck. In Homestuck, everybody always gets what they want--one way or another. That is what AURYN-- placed here, at the center of the forces of creation and destruction-- suggests. A good example of this is Lord English’s creation, where Caliborn and Gamzee’s wills to become Lord English meet Arquis’ desire to have a heroic moment of unfathomable impact onto reality:

Thus resulting in a scenario that fulfills all of their desires, and results in the creation of Lord English and Doc Scratch:

I’m not going to list a bunch of other examples because this kind of stuff is literally always what happens in Homestuck. The only thing that trumps a person’s desires in Homestuck is the desires of another willing to undermine or exploit the former.

And that kind of authoritarian behavior is the closest thing to “Sin” Homestuck’s setting has. It always comes with consequences. This is also why Karma exists in Homestuck’s causality, as noted by Latula. This is what the cycle of revenge was about. 

Not even killing someone can truly erase the impact of their will on reality in Homestuck’s universe, and usurping or denying others their wills always comes with a whiplash effect back on yourself. So what does that mean for Lord English, who has so thoroughly usurped and denied the wills of every other member of the cast?

Well that... is another story, and shall be told another time. 

Next time, we’ll talk about the Mother franchise’s two later installments: Mother 3, and Earthbound. There’s much to discuss. Perhaps we’ll even find an echo of Lord English’s karmic punishment there?

I’m back - okay, so.  To begin with, Tajima actually acknowledges that Madara and Hashirama had, admittedly unknowingly, become friends.  Madara wants his precious people to not be in constant danger.

It’s quite easy to play the part of Concerned Parent (because he is just for a different reason) and talk about how both he and Izuna had been so worried when Izuna realized just who he had been meeting - yes of course they knew Madara, but they thought this civilian or no Clan ninja (do those even exist? idk, i just realized that doesn’t make sense) was helping.  It’s obvious that Butsuma sent his son to trick Madara just like. well, that’s not important.

Madara insists that Hashirama wasn’t tricking him, Hashirama is nice and also wants peace!

So Tajima is Concerned because if Hashirama is such a nice boy why! He shudders to think of what Butsuma will do to him! *while ‘unconsciously’ touching a scar Madara knows he has* But, it’s not like they can do anything.  He’s sure Butsuma is already ranting at the boy about how evil the Uchiha are.  *sighs* if only he had been a civilian, Tajima would have gladly welcomed him into the Clan.  Even a run away from another Clan would have been better than Butsuma’s Prized Creation- he means Heir, of course, so sorry.

Madara hesitantly asks if maybe they could help Hashirama get away from Bustuma.  And, oh!  Tajima is so proud of how kind and helpful his son is!  To reach out to an enemy like this!  They will have to be careful of course, no doubt Butsuma is keeping a tight leash on the boy.

So now Tajima has made it a Clan Mission to try to rescue dear sweet Hashirama from the Evil Butsuma, carefully leading conversations to/around Hashirama to equate Tobirama (already so so smart, he would see right through this) with Butsuma so that Hashirama is less and less inclined to want to bring his younger brother.  Madara comforts him, telling him they’ll make a plan to try to break Tobirama of the brainwashing and conditioning - why there’s a whole section of his Clan dedicated to doing so for those who run from their Evil Clans!
