what IS your thesis about? from the list of items im kinda imagining it's something about different communication styles relating to conveying information? my thesis is about the 2022 "nier church incident" wherein a user on the nier automata subreddit started posting extremely-credible videos claiming he'd found a new secret area in the game that no one had discovered before, and the fanbase went absolutely insane. i argue that the incident provides an interesting window into a possible religious studies framework for looking at video game secret seeking as a quasi-religious act of communal orientation and meaning-making

it's very fun to read your speculations about how all the stuff i mentioned could fit into it! unfortunately, most of that stuff is just mentioned in 1-2 sentences; the meat of the fun stuff is mostly related to nier automata, shadow of the colossus, or The Bible.

but, as requested, here is how all the silly things fit:

i use pannenkoek's video as an example of fans pushing the boundaries of games to create new mysteries that weren't intended by the developers. this is specifically in my section about how/why video game mysteries affect people emotionally!

gaylor theory & the johnlock conspiracy are both examples of (non-game) fanbases doing theorycrafting. fnaf/matpat is an example of video game fandom theorycrafting. all of these get like, a sentence each in the project

"hollow knight fanfiction" is because i use the hk fic "stag beetles and broken legs" as an example of fans writing fanfic based on fanfic (in the section where i talk about canon-building)

"kirby lore controversies" is also from the part where i talk about canon-building. specifically, i have a whole paragraph about how hard it often is to tell what video game "canon" is, and use kirby as an example of that

All to get his brother back. In his grief sam is a danger to himself and the entire world rather than have it explode in his face like dean he lets it absorb him and everyone in close vicinity (or not). If dean is a knife edge that cuts anything it falls on then sam is a fucking war nuclear in his brother-grieving

hmm most of my hobbies are super generic stuff like watch anime and play video games... I guess I do very much enjoy messing around in gimp and stuff, like just today I made this as a new blog header:

Had seen someone post a video defending the jokes and memes on the oceangate incident, how poor people can laugh and mock the situation bc they don't owe rich people empathy, when rich people never gave them empathy etc

I think my thoughts on it are this: not owing any empathy/sympathy =/= making jokes about it. Not feeling compassion doesn't mean you Have to make memes about it.

You don't have to respect who died or how, but like... You can do that without turning it into something to laugh at, you know? No matter what you've been through or what they've done, if you're turning death into internet lol points it's a reflection on you at that point. Not them.

Spit on their graves, speak their names with contempt, Eat The Rich by tearing them from their thrones. Turning it into joke fodder just.... doesn't accomplish anything, and is just as tasteless as the men you're ridiculing. They would do the exact same thing to the rest of the world, and if that's your instinct here then you're not as different from them as you'd like to think, just because you don't have the money they do.

Do they deserve it? Yeah, karmically. Do you need to lower yourself to their level and commodify their death for likes on the internet, as the only way to express your lack of compassion? .....Do you?

...Anyways. if none of that speaks to you, then maybe the reminder that a 19 yo son who didn't want to go and got dragged into that death trap against his will, will resonate. Yeah, people who deserved it got theirs, but not everyone in that damn thing necessarily Deserved it. If you don't think the jokes reflect poorly on you otherwise, then maybe you should rethink your stance with that extra info in mind.

And before anyone storms in to defend their stance: I don't fucking care. I lack any and all respect for you if you are going to continue to make the jokes AND will throw hands at me about it. Express your disrespect how you want, I'm not your goddamned mother. Just keep it away from me and know you can't rationalize it to me in a way that matters.

If you still come at me to argue - well. I'm just going to assume that means I'm right and hit a sore spot in calling you out. Because if you're angry enough about a stranger's post that means it hit you personally. Jokes are in poor taste, but lashing out for your own flaws is an even worse look, you know?

honestly kinda unfortunate that the only spooky library aesthetic is the victorian fancy bookshelves dark academia one bcos like. ok here's some library stories.

while i was at the university the library was undergoing a major refurbishment so for a little while the print journals were being stored temporarily down in the basement.

basically nobody ever consulted the print journals bcos 99% of stuff undergrads would be looking up is online these days so every time i went down there it was dead fucking silent & empty. you had to walk through what felt like several miles of empty basement to reach the collection, which was in a room w a photocopier shoved in the corner and a bunch of these:

u turn the handles to move these around (saves space) and every time you had to go and check the aisles first on the offchance that someone was in there so they wouldn't get u know. Compacted.

many years ago i did a week's work experience with the National Library of Scotland. here it is:

i got a tour of the stacks while i was there. it's floor after floor of this:

the bookshelves are made of metal & i was treated to the 'fun fact' that the shelves are, bizarrely, load bearing. for this reason they have to be constantly vigilant about fire hazards because even a relatively small fire could cause a bookcase to buckle from the heat, which in turn could cause the whole building to collapse in on itself like a house of cards.

this has haunted me ever since!! thank you.
