heyy what are your thoughts on Mike's monologue? Do you think he was being honest or it was a half truth or something? I'm really curious abt what you think bc honestly I'm not sure myself

this might be long i havent dove into this scene in a while.

the short answer is i think it was a mix of some sad truths disguised as romance, things he believes she wants to hear (but is completely wrong), and just straight up lies. but the biggest thing is that what he thought she wanted to hear was what will told him in the van, unaware that those were wills feelings not els.

but before i even talk about it lets just LOOK at the scene. this is what every other romantic scene in the show has looked like:

and this was allegedly mike and el’s “most romantic scene”.

they are not happy here. this was right before mike said he loves her and right after. one of the biggest differences in this scene compared to the other ships is the fact that both of them we’re forced into this conversation. mike was NOT going to say any of this. will had to push him to continue. meanwhile el is physically restrained from responding to him. she was forced to listen to him and mike felt like he was forced to say it.

anyways now im gonna analyze the actual content of the monologue:

sad truths disguised as romance:

“i dont know how to live without you”

i think this is true and it could be a romantic line but it could also be really sad. it reminds me of when finn (or millie i dont remember) said that they were like a married couple with no option of divorce. i think what mike really meant by this is that hes scared to confront who he really is without el. he actually already did confront this version of himself after she and will moved. i think when he was without either of them he realized his true feelings and hated it and he just wants to go back to who he was before he figured it out.

“i feel like my life started that day i found you in the woods”

im not as confident in this one but it could honestly be extremely sad when looked at from a different lens. it was the first night after will went missing. it was the first time things in his life got weird and unexplainable. losing will and finding el is what led to all the supernatural trauma theyve been through. i dont think mike associates el with trauma but that night in the woods did change all of their lives forever and nothing has been normal since that night. when mike told will asking him to be his friend was the best thing hes ever done, thats said in a way that could not be interpreted any other way, especially not in any negative way. this can. (that being said im not negating how much mike genuinely does care about her and im not saying he wishes he never found her or anything like that).

then it gets so complicated because the only way mike knew how to reach her was through everything will said to him in the van, not knowing that everything will said was referring to HIS feelings, not els.

what mike thinks she wants to hear (based on what will said):

mike tells el “im afraid that one day you wont need me anymore” directly referring to when will told him that she (he) will always need him and then we see this shot.

a lot of people interpret this clip as will just being sad that mike loves her but i think here he might actually be realizing that mikes using his own feelings unknowingly to reach her and he feels guilty about it.

will also told mike that “you make her feel like shes not a mistake at all, like shes better for being different and that gives her the courage to fight on” which actually is not the case for el AT ALL. that was the entire reason for their fight in volume one. el told him “i am different i do not belong” and that he thinks shes a monster and thats why she doesnt love him. she doesnt wanna be loved for being different. but will made mike think she does. these are els reactions to when he brings up her powers:

“youre my superhero”

“you can move mountains, you can fly”

during the whole monologue shes crying but both times he brings up her powers she stops and just looks mad. she looks like she just realized something and shes not happy about it.

i think will completely unintentionally made mlvn so much worse with his veiled confession in the van.

just straight up lies:

“and i knew right then and there that i loved you” (referring to the very first moment he saw her in the woods.)

this is the biggest lie of the whole monologue and i dont always like to bring in social media and marketing to my analyses but when i watched this for the first time, the SECOND he said this i immediately thought of this tweet:

we also have proof in the show itself that he didnt feel this way. he brings her home because he just found a lost girl in the woods in the pouring rain. and then he and lucas and dustin immediately come up with a plan on how to get her back to wherever she came from so that the next day they can go back outside and find will.

“i love you on your bad days”

immediately debunked. mikes a fucking BITCH on her bad days. even will thinks so.

“i love you for exactly who you are”

he doesnt even talk about who she is??? at the beginning of the season we had that whole scene of nancy and jonathan talking about all the reasons they love each other and what does mike love about el? that shes a superhero?

and THEN after the monologue is over its not even mike who gives her the courage to fight on! ITS MAX!!! el doesnt have the power to move the vines until she sees max in trouble. and then later when shes reviving her and theres flashbacks of their moments together, specifically when she says “theres more to life than stupid boys” and “not hopper, not mike, you.” thats huge.

continuing with post-monologue volume 2, its so beyond weird that we dont see el speak a WORD to him after this enter speech. not even just after that speech, after she almost died.

if mlvn was meant to be why didnt they have a moment like this after she woke up? we dont even see her wake up. we dont even see them for two days!!!!

anyways that was a lot. i hope it all made sense. i think the purpose of the whole monologue was to show that even after mike says what she wanted to hear, shes still not happy with him. shes realized that that she is her own person and her own superhero. the duffers just made it excruciatingly complicated and i hope they do a good job explaining this scene in s5.

And theres multiple heists going on at the same time in the same place and its basiclly that one always sunny meme of the two guys recognizing each other across the restaurant and also the leverage two teams competing at the same heist episode vibes going on.

Also did I mention it all started with a fake marriage thing going on with grif and simmons that they have to keep up around his family. Then I made it better by adding heists. For some reason lol.

In the ninjago one, it's more of taking place over time and through years ect ect and it's not solely focused one one heist it's more of just we'll sometimes hear references to jobs theyve done. Cuz I dont think I could write that many overcomplicated heists. I mean I could but this au doesnt call for that so I'm not. Yet...

None of them know about their elemental powers yet either. Kai just thinks hes good with fire, jay just thinks hes good with electronics ect ect

Idk how lloyd fits in it all yet but I will. I'm sure. It's come to me.

The timelines and certain events are kinda all over the place since the ninja never stopped garmadon from getting the golden weapons or the devourer or really any of that, I'm envisioning that the world has become very divergent from canon. The lore will still be similar just not exactly the same ig. Still figuring put the worldbuilfing in it

Cuz alot of the villians in ninjago are a direct cause of villains of previous events. So if those events never occur. Then what happens. This I guess.

It all takes place a few years past the pilot, so they're older than when they first met there

I genuinely cannot find the first pilot eps anywheres and I cant remember how it all starts exactly, I just wanted to see it again anyways and to see how different the beginning of the series would be if wu wasnt there.

It's really fun to try and figure out how different the ninja would be as criminals, like what would drive them to that, and what would that change about them, and how different they would be from their canon selves too. Rn they're just. The same but more crime.

I'm imagining ronin finds them all separately and then they go their own ways then meet back later? Idk still figuring out alot of the particulars in it too

ok im going for a reread here so i dont miss anything from my first reaction but ok why is san so angry damn is it bc of how wooyo comforted him then left him in the morning before or did it start after that. like is san just sick of woo being a flaky little shit with commitment issues or what. If it weren’t for the way it currently feels as if he’s suffocating, Wooyoung would have the urge to smile too.

god i love the way you write woo especially from his pov. how he's just so fond, like he's a grumpy asshole and a shit but he cares so so so so much abt san, and to some extent that i dont know how deep, seonghwa as well, like it's these little details that are like. yeah he acts so tough but it rly is guarding an emotional interior </3

ok now i fucking LOVE this scene between woo and the mc. "He gets it, that helplessness. The realization of what horrors you are capable of. The fear that you would do it again." sets up what follows so well, the buildup throughout this chapter is slow and steady but not too slow, its perfect, [chefs kiss] i wish i could do pacing like you do

He doesn’t want to answer it, but he isn’t surprised by it. He also believes the answer is something you should hear. “I have,” he replies. “But sometimes people are monsters too.”

SUCH good lines here ugh. i think its a testament to woo's character that he knows he doesn't owe mc any comfort or any answer, but he believes she needs to hear this, and she definitely does, and i feel like him choosing to talk about it shows a lot of unsaid respect he has for her as a person. like he obviously doesnt Like her, but moreso he doesn't Want to like her - reasonably so, like he Is literally right - but i like these little moments of respect towards her. it makes him very likeable as a character.

now i need to copy paste this entire section bc i LOVE it.

But Seonghwa wouldn’t get this, and San wouldn’t either. Neither of them have killed from fury, from unbridled anger and vengeance. Seonghwa doesn’t even kill the beasts they hunt, merely wounds them with his arrows. San does, but not humanoid beasts. Nothing that can speak to him. San had offered for them to kill the mimic yesterday morning, but Wooyoung knows that he would have been the one to do it. He would have been the only one who could.

firstly this part is already fascinating, as now we know that the bandits each have their own very different lines they refuse to cross. it definitely tracks w their characterisations of hwa being soft, woo being rough around the edges, and san being somewhere in between. it's been a good and consistent dichotomy there since the start but i like how we see it in more ways like this! though the wording of neither of them killing from fury does make me wonder if theyve crossed their own lines to kill out of necessity before 👀

Well, other than you. You did it, and you did it with a thirst. Passionate hatred, followed by agony. And for the first time - not only on this trip, but in the years since the orphanage - Wooyoung saw himself in somebody. The darkest part of himself that he pretends does not exist, the part that would burn Jay alive if he had the chance, that sadistically screamed with a vengeance on that fateful night so many years ago. The part that haunts him with the horrors of what he has done, that keeps him awake on nights such as this one, he saw it in you. It scares him to know that something so dark resides in you. A rich and pampered girl from Kuroku, who has known little of the danger they have all faced, whose mind is somehow a home to a fury so horrid. It scares him equally as much how it comforts him to know that he is not alone.

NOW THIIIIIIIIIIIIIS. THIS I AM EATING THIS SHIT UP i think this might be my favourite part of the chapter because ???? woo, who has been so hostile towards her from the start, SEEING A MIRROR IN HER.... im obsessed w that, i love it when enemies or otherwise hostile dynamics see parallels in each other, and i love how in this instance its very specifically feeling almost Seen in those similarities, even comforted, because finally he isn't alone in those dark, horrid feelings of his. like its not seeing the good in him reflected in her and being like huh maybe we can get along after all no its seeing all the fucked up parts and going huh, you're just like me. i am OBSESSEDDDD!!!! establishing that almost kinship i feel like just opens such a tantalising door for where their relationship leads. like theyve been my favourite pair to watch from the start but this development just cements that, the dynamic is so TASTY!! also just bonus points for letting the mc be fucked up a lil. like YES, let women harbour horrors beyond comprehension, let them hold a rage so morbid, let the pampered princess want to commit horrifying acts of violence!!!! let the broody rogue and ""helpless"" royal see eye to eye on the darkness they carry in their minds!! let them be comforted and confronted by it!!! we love to see it!!!! like fr i could ramble abt this paragraph for ages.

However, his avoidance also has to do with the fact that he doesn’t think San or Seonghwa would understand. They don’t carry that darkness with them, that same thirst for vengeance that he does. Seonghwa longs for his home in a way that reminds Wooyoung of a sailor, dreaming for a past land even though the sea carries him in the opposite direction. Even San, who has been wronged in the most horrific and deprecating of ways does not talk of killing Jay, only escaping him.

now this is another delicious look into the trio's psyche. seonghwa, who's clinging to the past, vs san, who's trying to escape it in the present, vs wooyoung, who's driving towards vengeance in his future. honestly all these comparisons make me like wooyoung more and more as i do relate to him the most, being distrustful and vengeful about my shit rather than avoidant or... whatever copium hwa's taking FHKSDFHKDF for lack of better wording. but yeah i really like that out of all the characters woo finds that similarity in, its mc, despite probably having a lot more in common w sanhwa in terms of lifestyle and past. its just so ugh. chefs kiss

it's incredibly sad how wooyoung is only thirteen here and yet has already deduced that they are not here to be cared for, but to be disciplined into soldiers. like, get the kids young enough and they probably couldve manipulated and gaslit them into thinking they were loved and this is just what theyre supposed to do, or something, brainwash them into mindless pawns, but it seems like they didnt even care enough to grant them that tiny mercy. evidently, they didn't need to, cause they managed to get what they wanted without it more often than not, it seems.

i think its very realistic that wooyoung still blames himself for what happened to yeonjun n winter but doesnt regret killing everyone. like despite the very heavy handed themes of wrestling w guilt for ending lives, clearly showing its morally wrong and not something any of the characters think is a good thing inherently, he still knows he was justified in it, and would do it again. i like that. the line about guilt tho. ooooooooooft.

and there we go, the reason why he goes by woo :') oh my got that is utterly devastating. and the guilt part. hooo boy. i will say i didnt expect mc to be the first person he tells all this too, i figured at least san would know by now, but it makes sense why he didn't. im seeing that despite how close the trio - especially woosan in particular - seems, there is still a very big distance between them they've all been too guarded to cross.

pica’s 1/6 of an inch tall

(im kidding. his name was originally a pun, but not a typography one - he’s a rehash of an old oc i had way back in the day, who was based off a magpie. hes actually on the short side for a dwarf, i want to say around 4′3″)

he was a lyrium smuggler before the inquisition, and specifically was the front man who sold it. he’s a champion liar and man of many faces, and knows how to disappear in plain sight (which is easy if you’re a dwarf and most law enforcement on the surface are humans. to a human guard dwarves all look the same and theyre too short to really get a good look at their faces). he had a pretty transient lifestyle- he didn’t get tied down, didn’t get too attached to anyone or anything, had pretty few posessions. he was 26 (or the dwarf equivalent of 26. hows dwarf aging work in dragon age anyway) when the carta got him to spy at the conclave, and you know how that went

look ok. the first half of his career as inquisitor was just. wingin’ it. no one really knew what the fuck he was supposed to be doing, least of all him, so he just pretended he knew what he was doing till, i wanna say the end of into the abyss. after talking to mal hawke some he learned that, hey, everyone’s always winging it, and also that his decisions kind of really mattered. (and that those decisions he makes can. kill people) for the first time in his life, he realizes hes actually important, and what he does changes things on the large scale

so after that, he got to thinking. the world kinda sucks. and it sucked before the war. and the leaders of thedas are really not doing all that much about it, except trying to kick each other in the nuts while their enemies are weak and completely forgetting that politics Cannot Survive as a practice if theres no farmers able to make food for diplomats to eat. so, orlais, if your farmland is all gunched up with battlefields, then you need to fix that, don’t you. but the inquisition is really, really good at providing stability! it’s good at establishing patrols, safe trade routes, providing local employment, and is a fairly reliable consumer of local goods. so pica capitalized on that, and quietly spread inquisition presence all over southern thedas. this led to immense inquisition influence, with very little fanfare.

you can guess why the rulers of thedas tried to get rid of him as soon after corypheus was taken care of as possible. they branded him a tyrant and like. ok. they werent like. super far off. bc at this point he was kinda trying to see how much of the world he could take over before anyone noticed/tried to stop him and also figured he could do like, a way better job at leading it than the current rulers could. and he wasnt beholden to anyone either (not like empress celene! elected to her throne by… uhhhhhhhhhhh divine providence or something. i mean shes doing an ok job but like i didnt vote for her) so if he really really wanted to he could go full dragon reborn

ive got off topic but point is he figures humans have had their go and they fucked it up, so it’s a dwarf’s turn and he’s going to put the world back together himself. (ps hey bioware can we have some dwarf stuff in the next game. im js. weve had a whole load of elf nonsense and its nice and all but dwarfs had a cool ancient society too yknow)

after trespasser he elects to keep the inquisition around, because he worked hard to make this glue keeping the bits of thedas stuck together and he’ll be damned if he’ll let solarse and his minions screw it up. but it gets nerfed heavily and hes pissed about it

he romanced cassandra! i really like their relationship- they look to each other for moral guidance. pica knows he can get flighty and relies on her to keep him in line, and always asks her for advice when he sees her in the courtyard. he usually doesn’t follow it but he feels it’s important to have her perspective on things

they disagree on a lot of stuff (like he made celene and briala co-leaders but she was in favor of gaspard) but he trusts her judgement, and supported her in becoming the divine

hes trans! im not sure how thatd be regarded in dwarf society, in undergrounders i doubt it’d be very acceptable given their emphasis on reproduction, but house cadash has been on the surface for generations and has probably adopted more liberal views on lgbt stuff. either way hes not very open about it, and it’s really easy to pass when he’s around humans (i get the feeling dwarves and humans look for different things, when they’re trying to guess gender. for example hes got some beard scrub, which in human terms means male but in dwarven terms probably either means very young male or unkempt female) (the added implication to this is that varric might keep his beard to stubble so he looks younger) he met krem and had an instant Trans Solidarity moment, which also comes with the Trans Fear that the person Knows that you’re trans and could out you. it’s a weird kind of trust and for me feels like that one performance art piece with the people holding the bow and arrow. anyway hes cool w krem but doesnt talk to him all that much. theyve got pretty different interests.

his best friends are probs cole and dorian! he’s very curious, and likes to hear different perspectives on things. he and dorian often play chess and discuss all sorts of stuff. they end up yelling a lot because they both want to talk but the other started saying something before they were done with their point, which they started saying before the other was done with their point, and so on. he doesnt get very far in the slavery argument until hawke starts chillin at skyhold more regularly and can adequately school him on the state of tevinter slavery (fuck i gotta make a post about that. mal’s had a lot of development since i last talked about him)

he listens very seriously to cole’s observations. he can really appreciate the input of someone who watches so much more than speaks, and heartily supported his ventures in becoming more human.

he also gets along very well with josephine and likes to trick her into taking days off. hes also always down to chat w dagna and scout harding! and varric, of course. it’s always nice to talk to someone without having to crane his neck up at them all the time

uhh trivia, at one point i thought i’d fucked up cassandra’s romance by not flirting with her enough so i meant to go for dorian’s instead, bc while i had wanted to romance cass since uhh i dunno one of my mutuals first reblogged a picture of her, i underestimated how charming and cool of a guy dorian ended up being. so in canon i say pica had a crush on both of them for a little while
