Unpopular opinion but why is everyone so up in arms about the new Civil Oath? Literally all it's asking is for you to promise not to commit treason just because the Pope tells you to? I can see where people are coming from with the whole violation-of-religion deal, but can you blame the Assembly for trying to make sure the people aren't forcibly subjugated by the wealth of the nobility?
faith-first-alwaysdeactivated03011791
Sounds like something a heretic would say. To betray the Pope and king is to betray the will of God and your eternal soul! You should pray for forgiveness and pledge loyalty to the monarchy or have fun burning in hell. Sorry not sorry.

how do you feel about knife play with Sunday from hsr? (Feel free to ignore love your writing btw <3)
Heyyy, I’m glad you do! Also knife okay huh~
There are two kinds of knife play, one where it’s only for show, one that’s more dangerous and bloody. I’ll put a line between them, since I’ll do both
Dom!reader x sub!sunday
Warning: a little blood, knife play!!
Tumblr media
Sunday reminded me of luocha or ayato, but after doing the newest quest, he is pretty pathetic huh?
That man has spikes as piercings, on his wings, he is definitely kinky /j
I can picture him being into some violent stuff though, as well as knife play
It’s the danger that gets him, how he isn’t in control, rather than the pain that might come with it
(That one is a bonus!!)
Using the handle to brush it down his spine, letting his skin feel the cold metal of the dull side
How he’d shiver! Eyes never leaving yours, pupils shaking in a heretic mix of anticipation and fear
Yet a meek smile would be on his lips, and dick making a mess onto the mattress
Maybe threaten him a little too, and watch his heart jump out of his chest as you do
“You skin is so smooth and pretty, would it still be pretty if it’s red?”
A bubbling sensation spread within him, the excitement was unparalleled
If you wanted to see red, why don’t you just look at his cute blushing face?
Aftercare would be you assuring him you’d never hurt him, and how you adore him, but maybe, secretly, he does want you to hurt him a little
Tumblr media
Sunday just loved the danger
At some point, he’d ask you if you wanted to go further, just this once maybe?
If you weren’t into it, then forget it, but if you did…
Doing the same tricks as before, preparing him a little instead of throwing him into the cold water
It was adorable how he was even more eager than normally, jumping at every little touch
The blade of the knife was so cold, his skin tingled wherever it touched him
“You remember what to do when it gets too much?” Having a safe word is always better than not
After making sure that he knew what to do, you’d gently brush the tip of the knife along his back
You didn’t use any strength or force at all, yet the skin was slightly cut already.. my, that’s one sharp knife
“Hiiss- ha-haaah….” He jolt, shoulders twitching and hands bawled into fists, it hurt, but it wasn’t too bad, cuz the pleasure outweighs it
This was real, you were really hurting him, causing marks and scratches..!
Poor little angel was trying his best not to move, putting all of his trust into you, how cute
At the end of it, his face was matching the crimson on his back, as well as on the tool in your hand. A beautiful shade of red, running down his back and soaking the sheets. Though, instead of being defiled, it looked more like a the process of a fine masterpiece. Gentle pants came from his mouth, his body shuddering as he came, all while he hid behind his wings to avoid your eyes.

Some Zevlor Things —
EDIT 12/2/23: Added a few more things
A fellow Tiefling Hellrider, Tilses, is with him in the caves acting as his bodyguard. He sometimes calls her Tilly.
There is one bedroll in the caves shoved off in the far corner with a book titled "The Devil You Know: An Autobiography" - not sure if it's his personal writing or if he's reading it, either way it adds to the flavor of his of his tiefling pride (and/or anguish).
Tumblr media
It reads:
Have you ever had a god change your blood? It is a horrifying thing, even for those who may desire it. Yet few tieflings wished for Asmodeus to claim their bodies, only be given no choice in the matter. It is not as if we were well-loved before the archdevil's gambit. Our people have always struggled against the notion of 'devilkin', as if a single drop of infernal ichor inescapably corrupts. How amusing, when so many others willingly sell their souls to fiends, yet their culture as a whole escapes the blame. By what method can we redeem ourselves, when the crime is not ours? I would drive a blade into every warlock that aided Asmodeus' damned ritual, but personal vengeance cannot undo the will of a god, much less one as slippery as the Lord of Lies. When every passerby thinks you a thief and heretic, it is deeply tempting to become one. (cut off) The only thing that has stopped me is knowing Asmodeus wants nothing more than for all of us to fall from grace.
Around the his table are Invasion Plans for Elturgard, Traveler's Guide to Baldur's Gate, Traveler's Guide to the Sword Coast Vol IV: The Risen Road (which aligns when he tells you earlier there are gnolls on the road), and "Front and Center: a Thespian's Memoir" that reads:
"... in fact, the greatest joy of my life hasn't been acting, but becoming. When you choose a character to play, you don't just wear a mask - you take a little bit of their soul for your own. Whoever you are in your heart of hearts, if only by the faintest note."
Zevlor aside I think this is a sweet quote for the player and player character relationship <3
Dialogue in the Caves:
Tumblr media
Zevlor: I Hardly need a bodyguard, Tilses. This isn't Avernus. Tilses: No sir. At least the monsters there looked like monsters.
Tilses: Commander— Zevlor: Just Zevlor, Tilly. We're civilians now, remember? Tilses: With respect, sir — being a Hellrider is for life. They can't take — Zevlor: They can, and did. Avernus changed things — best we get used to that. Tilses: ... Yes, Zevlor
Tilses: The Watch or the Flaming Fist? Zevlor: Pardon? Tilses: When we get to Baldur's Gate. Where are we enlisting? Zevlor: I'm done soldiering, Tilly. I'd like a clean start. But go with the Watch. You're too honest to be a mercenary.
Zevlor: No word from the scouts, yet? Tilses: No sir. But if there's a clear path past the goblins, they'll find it. Zevlor: Yes, of course.
ITEMS —
in the Chest there is a bronze goblet, 46 gold, and a battle-worn blade. On his person he has his gloves (Hellrider's Pride), an apple, a camp supply pack, and the key to his chest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blade says:
A fine by well-used sword. It seemed to have once belonged to a holy order, but the indication of rank and patron deity at the hilt have recently been filed down.
The gloves' flavor text says:
A waft of sulphur emanates from this proudly-kept piece.
Celebration at the Camp:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I should be out there, talking with them. In... Just a moment, maybe." "Is this everyone? Our numbers have grown so few..." "No more. I can't afford to lose any more of them." "No. Let them have fun. I'll be ruining it come morning anyway."
Mindfayer Colony:
Things he mumbles in the Pod:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pod will show you his memories of Elturel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After saving Zevlor, I forced myself to pick the "mean" options just to see how it goes.
If you tell him its his fault tieflings were imprisoned in moonrise, he says:
Tumblr media
If you tell him "Do yo have a right to ask?" when he asks about the tieflings:
Tumblr media
He doesn't argue with any of your remarks except one, when he says "For a moment I welcomed it" and you tell him "For a moment until you realized your reward would be a tadpole" he corrects you:
Tumblr media
If you tell him if he wanted power he should live up to his own ideal:
Tumblr media
If you tell him to get out of your sight:
Tumblr media
When you tell him it's not his fault he was enthralled:
Tumblr media
If you tell him "Fine. Good luck, Zevlor."
Tumblr media
If you say you could use another blade in the fight to come:
Tumblr media
At the Netherbrain:
Tumblr media
(smiling <3)
"The journey has been brutal, but I stand here a Hellrider once more, and I would die a proud man if I died this day."
I know it's a Soldier thing to be proud to die for a cause but it still makes me worry for him given his background so far <:]
If you click on him, he has two unvoiced lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you pickpocket him at this point, he'll have the same items on him as before (in this save he has a carrot instead of an apple for me).
His stats at this time: (Steeped in Bliss is from one of my items)
Tumblr media
Post Game (Patch 5)
I don't know if there are other permutations of this letter, yet, but this is what I received:
Tumblr media
I hope my penmanship has improved somewhat in the past months. When I first stumbled into this city, I shook so badly that I could scarcely hold the soup the priests pressed into my hands - let alone write and thank you as you deserve. It is only when the city itself began to shake that I felt my hands grow still. Along with the other veterans sheltering at the temple - discards of Elturel's 'unworthy' legions - I watched that monstrosity rise over the city. We felt no fear. Only anger. Disgust. Purpose - and with it, power. I do not know what oath we cling to now, or how long it will last - but we shall use it to ensure that this city will not suffer as Elturel did. Whether it wants us or not. It is more than thanks alone I owe. No words can make amends for what I did to my people, but that is as it should be. More come to the temple every day to aid in the relief efforts, and if I am permitted to work alongside them, then I am content. Come and see us, when you can. Zevlor
It's interesting — if not bitterswet, tragic, and inspiring — to hear that Zevlor and other Paladins regained their Oaths via pure, stubborn devotion to saving people when it began to look as bad as Elturel.

Recipe for creating God! In just 9 steps by Barem Bridge
Tumblr media
Let's turn things upside down this time. I'll start directly with the conclusion and we'll work our way back.
My conclusion: Barem wants to create a god.
Step 1: create commitment, it's important to go about it the opposite way round, get followers (focus on the young if you want to make a mark on a generation), set up a real infrastructure with even prophets who look like followers but are superior, the great chosen ones!
Tumblr media
Step 2: Sow chaos. This is important to make people understand the need for a great savior. Make the icon a sin, and pretending to be a savior a sin too. Don't hesitate to contact the fire demon for help.
Tumblr media
Step 3: make sure that whoever is to be your deity is alone, has no one close to him and is very lonely. Worse, becoming himself is his only answer. Don't hesitate to do it in front of a big sacrificial fire. For best results, break what little sane spirit remains in your deity. What god can be sane? That's not what we ask of them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 4: You can take inspiration from other bases you know, take inspiration from the Christian area. Not all men believed in Jesus, and Jesus was tortured. That's a good thing, because it has a double benefit. Firstly, if your deity doesn't close himself off to humans, it'll show his great wisdom, but above all, if he can be resurrected, it makes it easier to create his myth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 5: Next, trust the elements that are simmering in your heart: a little loneliness, betrayal, grief, physical pain. Trust the torment of the story so that your hero's only hope is dashed. Did he believe in sex? Let him be further tormented so he understands that it won't make him happy, but also unhappy. And then you get something interesting, a martyr.
Tumblr media
Step 6: You have your martyr, and your preparation allows his suffering to be properly directed. His sexual assault? His grief? It's important that it doesn't make him want to live. A god doesn't live, humans do. But God is simply there. He exists in himself. Never dies, but never lives either. Above all, make sure that the gap between him and mankind widens a little. Let the misunderstanding between him and mortals deepen.
Tumblr media
Step 6: You need an antagonist, an opposing force. Focus on one of his loved ones, like Lucifer, the angel who once carried the light, who also symbolizes hope. But make him a traitor, a source of violence, a monster who doesn't feel sadness. Careful, we're talking about a pebble here, a betrayal, but it takes much more to create Le Diable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 7: Keep your god under control, as his torments could destabilize him. You're the one in charge, so you've got the situation under control. Be confident in your abilities. Trust your ingredients.
Tumblr media
As fish and sushi symbolize hope, your divinity no longer looks at them. The hand is an enigma for your divinity, a symbol of prayer, of the link with others, of its humanity, but a hand that is also cruel, violent, devastating yet gentle, yet playing on buried desires. Human complexity lies in this hand. It is the barrier that separates your divinity from the rest of the world. This symbol of rapprochement. And distance. Let him still believe in this hand. This possibility of being normal. Still keep your divinity under wraps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 8: But don't forget to feed it. Put the fish aside and take back what the bird brings you. You know, that light bird that's also a weight, symbolizing your relationship with others, especially what they think. Worrying too much about this enchanting bird can lead to tragedy, just as hoping to hear all the songs will make you look like a heretic - you can't be a god. There is only one. Chainsaw Man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No… All you can do is beg. Pray. Like a mere mortal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's vital that your divinity feeds on these unborn thoughts, they're not even birds. They're just eggs. Only God can eat them, as an omniscient being.
And there you have your divinity, a beautiful dish, but what exactly is it for? Several things.
Tumblr media
Tasting: You created light, so you created shadow. Or rather, the absence of light. To create this being of darkness, this being must be completely hermetic to this being of light, opposed, closed, above all: it must feel betrayed and abandoned by it. The absence of light is none other than Lucifer, the former bearer of light and God's right-hand man.
And there you have it: for your divinity to have access to Lucifer and oppose him, it has to accept its role as a divinity. Adapt to it. And so, finally, accept your role as savior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Savior from what? From the apocalypse!
By doing so, you protect humanity and contribute to your ideal.
Tumblr media
ET VOILÀÀÀ you have your champion!!!!! God? Chainsaw Man? Noooo, God himself is an ingredient.
Step 10: Wish the God Devil bon appétit

I'll be back for you
Pairing: Aleksander Morozova/General Kirigan/The Darkling x reader, Kaz Brekker x reader Summary: The Moon Summoner ran away with Alina from the Little Palace with the help of Kaz Brekker's crows. The group successfully escaped from Darkling's hands, but that doesn't mean he will forget about his Y/N. He's going to chase her until she is in his arms again. However, Mr. Brekker did not let his childhood friend disappear without a trace from his life again. He will protect her. For all costs. After all, she was his newest investment. Warning(s): Darkling, Kaz fights haphephobia (but not as severe for him ), reader argues with Baghra, reader has internal moral conflict, curses, fights, and their red aftermath, I used a quote from TVD and The Invisible Life of Addie Laurie because… they fit and I love them veeery much It's my first one-shot for both Darkling and Kaz, so please be gentle (I'm very nervous and excited at the same time to publish it) <3 Word count: 14k (too long, someone should take me away from the keyboard in the middle of this)
~•♤♤♤•~ Part 2 (end) ~•♤♤♤•~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every night since you escaped with Alina and Genya with the help of your childhood friend Kaz and his crows from Ravka, you've been haunted by nightmares. No. Not the usual horrible flashbacks of your past in Ketterdam or the Little Palace.
HE visited you.
The Darkling. The Black Heretic. The man who promised to keep your heart safe and broke it in two along with your trust.
Genya has a right to warn you about powerful men. But you, the lost girl kidnapped by slave hunters from Ketterdam, the girl who has nothing to lose and was happy enough to somehow end up in the general's tent and find out about being one of the most powerful Grisha, didn't want to listen to her.
You foolishly believed that you, of all people, were able to charm the most dangerous man in all Ravka with your beauty, character and mind.
You believed that sweet words, longing glances and tender moments between you were real, that they meant something.
But it was all just a game. A game that brought him your affection and blind trust. And Kirigan, Darkling, or Alexander played in it like mastermind.
You should have listened to Genya. At least those damn dark eyes wouldn't haunt you every time you closed yours.
With the taste in men you have, you should have predicted that the first guy you hooked up with would be a psychopath. Fate could only be a little bit more favorable to you and not connect you to the hundreds-year-old black heretic who created the fold.
You've always had a weakness for villains and gray characters.
Your first teenage crush only proved it.
Because who else but you would fall in love with a bastard boy from the barrel who started his criminal career with the Dregs, who couldn't stand the touch of other people, and who wanted nothing more in his life than revenge on Pekka Rollins?
If I survive this shit, I really should find someone normal to be with.
You thought before you somehow managed to fall asleep for the first time in a month, hoping that your bond with the Darkling would weaken for those few hours when you tried to find peace.
~•♤♤♤•~
It was pure darkness around you. Not that one when all the lights went out and it's only you and your bed. No. They felt too familiar for you to confuse them with anything else. Those were his shadows.
He must have been near, playing with you as he always had.
You carefully took one step forward. The shadows parted in front of you, so you could see the ground. You bent down to your boot and pulled out a dagger, hiding it behind the sleeve of your blouse. You had to be ready for anything. Even if it meant fighting the shadow lord himself in your own subconscious. You sighed, stepping uncertainly into the darkness.
Your eyes quickly adjusted to the place around you, allowing you to move faster along the path. You recognized this bloody spot. The path in the woods you raced down when he took you for your first ride. Then he dragged you to HIS fountain, telling you nonsense about how it's only here among other Grishas that you discover your true self. He was already weaving his manipulative web around you, and you fell into it like an oblivious fly.
The snap of a twig stopped you. You looked around, not seeing anything at all except for the fountain in the distance. You flinched as his shadows gently pushed you forward.
"I'm not going to play another of your games, General!" you screamed as you spun around, walking forward. If he was already disturbing you, at least he might have had the honor to step out of the shadows.
"Call me Aleksander…"
You shivered as you felt his soft whisper against your neck. You spun, summoning your light and shooting into the space behind you. Unfortunately, it didn't encounter any Black Heretics on its way.
You huffed angrily, continuing your walk until you reached the fountain.
It was different than when he brought you here last time. The engravings have changed. They no longer told the story of the Black Heretic who created the fold. They were of you and Aleksander. Slowly falling in love.
"The union of darkness and his light." you felt your body tremble as the fabric of his kefta brushed your hand.
"I would never have taken you for such a sentimental fool." you turned to face him, taking a step back to increase the distance between you. With a very smug smirk, you noticed that he had dark circles under his eyes. Good. At least the son of a bitch suffers as much as you do. "Especially not after what Baghra had told me."
"My mother has the amazingly irritating gift of ruining my plans. She also doesn't like the people I care about much."
"Hmm… what a pity. Maybe if you weren't planning to use us as weapons in your plans, I'd care more. Also, don't try to tell me that there are people in this world who are more important to you than yourself. We both know I'm not going to fall for it again."
"I understand your resentment." you laughed, shaking your head in disbelief as you turned your gaze back to the fountain. "What's so funny?" you relished every irritated word directed at you. Maybe you couldn't seriously hurt him physically, but at least you could be a pain in his ass.
"I just forgot how easy it is for you to choose words that both tell the truth and work in your favor. Please, continue. I didn't truly laugh for a very long time."
"You're making a mistake." he stood next to you, grabbing your arm to turn you toward him.
You yanked your arm out of his grip as soon as your powers met in that familiar dance of dark and light. You both sighed, stunned by the sudden combination of your powers coursing through your veins. You opened your eyes, which you closed in the flow of the moment, meeting his tender, longing gaze. The man reached out to cup your cheek, but you pulled away from him before your skin had a chance to touch again.
"Funny. That's what I heard from your mother before she made me realize what shit I got into."
"One conversation with my mother, and you're ready to give it all up? Just because she was faster than me? Because she revealed a truth about me that she had no right to? What if I wanted to tell you right after I dealt with the group that wanted to attack you and Miss Starkov?" the grudge in his eyes only fueled your anger. He had no right to resent you for running away from him at the earliest opportunity when he had been hiding this important piece of his past for so long.
"What does it matter, general? None of it was real anyway." you growled, turning your back on him again so as not to reveal your hidden emotions to him. You didn't want him to know that you still cared. Indifference was a worse punishment for him than your wrath.
"So c'mon. Prove your point. Turn around, look me in the eyes, and tell me that you didn't feel anything towards me for even the slightest moment."
You wanted. You really did. To look directly into his soul-black eyes and say that he meant as much to you as the dust under your shoes. However, you both knew very well that it would be just a poor lie. And you both knew each other well enough to know when the other was lying.
"Just because my foolish heart longs for something, it doesn't mean I'll give in to its stupid desires. Wasn't you the one who told me that wanting makes us weak?"
"You should know I've changed my mind by now." the sound of leaves crunching under his boots was the only warning you got before you felt his presence behind you. "You. You are changing my mind."
"Don't tell me I have any influence over you. It's a poor play. You can do better, Kirigan."
"You and I may change the world, Y/N…" you flinched as you heard the exact same words he said here so many months ago. You turned to face him when you felt the coldness of one of his shadows wrapping around your leg. You pointed your dagger at the man standing only one, little step away from you. He didn't seem affected at all as you pointed the dagger at him. He didn't even look at it. His eyes were only on yours. "You may not see it now, too blinded by your righteous, but not entirely fair, anger at me, but deep down, you know that we are destined for greater things than others. You, me, and Alina together can be the strongest creatures in the world."
"You know very well that we never wanted to live like this. Neither of us."
"Do you? Alina maybe doesn't want to be the Saint, but you, Y/N?" you took a step back and another as the black heretic approached you with his every word. He stood in front of you, letting the dagger you were holding in your trembling hands touch his chest. He smiled almost mockingly, seeing that your weapon against him was exactly the same one he gave you on your birthday, provoking your anger again. To spite him, you summoned wispy beams of white light that began to radiate from your hand to chase away his shadows.
"You don't know what I want." you growled, pressing the dagger harder against his heart to remind him that you were in control here. He could sneak into your dreams, but at night you were the most powerful Grisha in this bloody world. And even he had to reckon with your power.
"Yet I still see a desire in your eyes." you shifted your gaze to him, watching him silently and with hostility as his face was illuminated only by your powers. You were disgusted to find that, despite his betrayal, he was still equally handsome to you. "Not only for me but also for my power. You, my little moonlight, you want to be just like me. Strong, powerful, and ageless." he raised his hand deftly, dodging your dagger, and, under your watchful gaze, brushed a strand of hair behind your ear, stroking your cheek as he did so. He took a step towards you, causing you to press the blade against his neck as he got close enough to whisper in your ear. "You can run as far as you want, but you don't run from the truth that's inside you. And when you finally understand what you really want, I'll be there for you, waiting with open arms for my saint moon."
"Have fun waiting for this day, Morozova." you whispered, not giving in to his piercing gaze.
"I am a very patient man, after a thousand years on this earth, you will be too, Y/L/N."
"I'm not you, Aleksander. I don't wanna live forever, and I'm not gonna. I won't see the only people I truly love and care about die before me. Even eternity and unimaginable power are not worth it."
"They're still people you love and who can share this fate with you. Who will live long enough to be with you forever." one of his shadows began to wrap around your hand, forcing you to remove the dagger from his neck.
He leaned closer to you and rested his forehead against yours. You sighed, shivering as the scent of his familiar perfume enveloped you after so many weeks apart. You were tempted to give in to him again. And that dark desire in your heart terrified you more than the capabilities of the Black Heretic caressing your cheek.
"This isn't love. It was just a game. We were just playing a game. The same one you created a long time ago to earn my trust. But I'm no longer that naive girl who is desperate for somebody's attention and love. You made me stronger, crueler, ruthless. And believe me, general, I'll repay you for all you have done."
"You don't believe that. You can't have believed my mother that I am your villain so easily." in other circumstances, where your heart wasn't beating for his, you'd probably laugh at the desperation in his voice. But now that every fiber of you longed for the man before you, there was only one thing you could do.
"Then tell me, Aleksander..." you leaned in to him, rubbing his nose with yours as he closed his eyes and waited for your lips to finally touch after weeks of craving your slightest touch. "Why was I so tempted to do this?" you dug into his tempting mouth, giving you both what you needed.
In your head, you explained this crime against your friends as wanting to do what was originally intended to be your primary goal. The gentle prolongation of your longing, amazing, desperate kiss before you plunged the dagger into his side without the slightest hesitation wasn't your fault at all. Aleksander moaned into your lips, pulling away from you as he felt blood trickle down his side.
"Leave me alone, or I will make myself your villain." you whispered into his mouth before you somehow managed to get yourself out of your "dream".
~•♤♤♤•~
"Y/N?" Alina's soft whisper wakes you up. You opened your eyes, feeling how your chest was burning for fresh air and your heart beating faster than it should. The woman was sitting next to you, holding your hand.
In the corner of your eye, you can see Nina standing in the doorway of the room Kaz graciously assigned to you after you arrived in Ketterdam. You can swear on saints that Inej was looking through your window before she went - probably going to tell Kaz about your fourth nightmare this week.
And it was only Tuesday.
You felt attacked from all sides. If not Inej through the window, then the madmen through the door or in your dreams.
"What are you doing here? It's well after midnight." you asked her, gratefully accepting a towel from Nina to wipe the sweat from your face. Alina and Genya lived far from the club, in motels on opposite sides of the city.
"Just in case someone betrays us. At least one of you will save yourself if the Darkling comes to these parts."
Brekker's brilliant and preventive mind had already terrified you before you stepped off the boat onto the familiar land of Ketterdam. The fact that he thought through and arranged your accommodation before anyone could ask him was either another display of his otherworldly mind or a blatant act of arrogance and overconfidence in his strength against the Darkling. But you knew Kaz too well to assume that he underestimated the power of the Black Heretic even for a moment.
"Nice to see you too. Kaz sent for me."
"Since when does the sun summoner do all the Dreg king's orders?" you asked, making Nina laugh.
"Since the moon summoner is constantly skipping her bedtime. You have to sleep. You can't always be on Jesper's special energetic drinks." she scolded you like a little child, to which you snorted indignantly.
"I will take a gorgeous, lovely, very long nap right after we kill Kirigan. Before then, nobody can make me do that. And tell Kaz I remembered him as braver the last time we saw each other on your way back to the motel."
"We are just worried about you, Y/N. You slept the whole night only once since we left."
"Don't tell me you're surprised. If you were me, you would do the same."
"Maybe. But we both know you're stronger than me. I know you can beat him, and even if you can't do this alone, which I doubt…" she wrapped her hand around yours, making you look into her eyes again. "You must know I will always be by your side, like you by mine. It's you and me against the darkness, Y/N."
"You know, you've spent way too much time on that boat with your toughts. You sound like an old uncle giving good advice or something."
"Speaking of advice, if I were you, I wouldn't insult the only person who can wake you up from… this." Nina waved her hand in a circle, pointing to the miserable state you were in.
"You should see Kirigan. I stabbed him." you replied with a self-satisfied smirk, watching the heartrender gasp in shock and Alina shake her head in disapproval.
"What have I told you about starting unnecessary arguments with him and maiming him?"
"That this is a good way to vent my anger and frustration?" you asked innocently with a huge smile.
Alina drew breath to argue with you, but a knock on the door distracted her. You glanced at Jesper, peering into your room, and wrinkled your nose at the light-burnt sheets you and Alina had left.
"The boss wants you, moon girl."
"Not only him." you murmured, pulling the remnants of the quilt from yourself. You took your clothes out of the closet and turned to the people in the room with your hands on your hips. "Are you leaving or staying for the show?" Alina mumbled a silent apology, blushing in embarrassment as she left, along with a laughing Jesper and an amused Nina.
You sighed as you stood in front of the mirror and brushed away the sweaty hair that was stuck to your face. Thanks to Inej and Kirigan, it looks like you'll have a long conversation with Kaz about your safety again. Your friend was sometimes a bigger pain in the ass than you—an achievement that wasn't granted by you to just anyone.
"I just fucking hope you're writhing in pain right now." you muttered to yourself, not believing for a moment in the sincerity of what you just said.
~•♤♤♤•~
"You wanted me." you entered the Dirtyhands' office without knocking, taking a place of honor on one of the two comfortable armchairs in the room. Kaz didn't look up from his papers, but the slight crease of irritation on his forehead told you he had noticed your presence. You were surprised that, after years of separation, you could still read him easily. "It's rude to ignore your guest."
"It's rude to come in without knocking." he replied to your provocation, tracing something he had just written. You snorted in amusement, seeing that you managed to distract him.
"Well, I didn't come here for no reason. You sent Jes for me."
"Jes?" a diminutive you used for his sharpshooter, has earned the man's attention. He gave you a questioning look, throwing the papers on his desk.
"What? Can't I make a friend other than you?"
"I'm your boss." he hummed, getting his cane up from his desk and walking to his dresser. You rolled your eyes as you watched the man's back. The son of a bitch knew perfectly well that you hated it when he didn't look at you during a conversation.
"Sure, if it helps you sleep, tell yourself what you want, Brekker."
"You live at my club, sleep here, eat with my crows, and waste my time taking some useless gossip from downstairs." he enumerated, turning over his things and searching persistently for something.
"And I'd been doing this for four years before you became Mr. Scary Dirtyhands from the Barrel. You just proved my point, Kazzle. We are friends."
You got up from your chair and stood next to him. You glanced at the contents of his drawer and frowned, noticing something familiar. You reached for a small silver box with his REAL initials on it, but the man slammed the drawer shut before you could get your hands on the find. You snorted indignantly as you noticed the smug smirk on his face as he nearly clipped your fingers for your meddling.
Kaz Brekker was sentimental enough to keep the ashtray you gave him.
You involuntarily remembered what you told him when you handed it to him.
"I know you don't smoke and don't celebrate your birthday, but I think that's a pretty nice metaphor and the closure you need."
"What? An old ashtray from the market? Which you probably swept from under the noses of some heavy smokers."
"No, genius, in case you haven't noticed, it has a special engraving. Read it."
"For K.R., let him rest in peace. What's that supposed to mean?"
"You can consider it what you want. A keepsake of your former self, a lost life you might have had, an urn for the ashes of your former self... we both know you're not the same man you used to be. And you have every right to be, Kaz. It's just... I think you deserve something commemorating your old self. The boy who stole half-rotten apples with me to survive. Now you are someone else—someone stronger, wiser, cunninger... but know that I will never forget Kaz, who was my only light when I was at my worst."
"That's pretty sentimental for you. Also, calling me light is not quite an appropriate metaphor." he replied coolly, returning to his book.
You nodded to him, saying goodbye. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw him stroke a silver object for a moment and put it in his pants pocket. You smiled. Apparently, you weren't the only sentimental fool in Ketterdam.
"Then, as my friend, you won't mind telling me about that strange connection between you and the Darkling that keeps you from sleeping without threatening to set my club on fire with your dazzling moonlight?" he asked, snapping you out of your flashback.
"No, because, as my friend, you won't be nosy, and out of politeness, you won't ask."
"I anticipated this reaction. That's why I got this." a velvet ring box magically appeared in his hands.
"Are you going to propose to me? Oh, Kazzie, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this! You don't have to kneel, sweetheart. We can call Jes, and he'll do it for you. It's a perfect opportunity for him to practice before asking Wylan."
"Can you be serious for just one moment, please?" he asked, blushing slightly and trying to give you one of his famous menacing looks.
"Sorry, I couldn't resist. Besides, you could have foreseen in that plan of yours that I would never waste such an opportunity."
"Just open it." he sighed, tossing you the box. Too curious to find out what was inside, you decided to leave the poor boy alone and refrained from commenting further. You widened your eyes as you saw the real ring. "What? No enthusiastic and loud: "Yes, Kazzie, I'll marry you!", so my crows can tease me about it too? To be honest, I'm disappointed, Y/N."
"Well, I could have been joking about it when I didn't have a ridiculously beautiful ring in front of me. Sorry that I'm a little confused, Kaz."
"It's good you like it, but I'd rather know if it works as it should. Put it on your finger."
"As romantic as always." you murmured, trying on a silver ring with an opal and small diamonds around the stone. You raised your hand and, by using your power, increased the light reflected by the moon that was still in the sky so it could illuminate your new jewelry. "It's beautiful, but I have absolutely no idea what it is supposed to do."
"Protect you." you glanced back at Kaz, only to discover that he had been staring at you the entire time. The white sparkles in his eyes caused by your light captivated you more than the shining diamonds. You shook your head, remembering what happened the last time you gave in to your stupid crush.
"Protect me?"
"I've been doing some research with Alina and Nina about the bond between you and him, the amplifiers… we believe this will weaken the bond between you enough for you to sleep peacefully. He will not enter your mind uninvited." he said, spitting out the words about the Darkling like he was a plague. But you were more interested in something quite different from his open dislike of the Black Heretic.
"Why? Why are you getting through all of it for me? It's not your war to fight. You have no interest in it."
"I have. Since I got you out of the Little Palace, you've been my investment. And I protect everything I invest in and what's worth my time. No matter what."
"You do realize I won't bring you any profit? Alina would be a better choice than me." you questioned his choice. Kaz turned to the window, as if looking for Inej, whose arrival would interrupt this uncomfortable conversation.
Unfortunately for him, the saints had no watch over him. And one of them was waiting for him to gather his thoughts and answer her question. He had to do this without betraying the emotions that had been bubbling up inside him since he had first seen her at one of the Dreg's raids. He was lost the second he saw her and completely fated to love her after their first conversation.
But she couldn't know it.
She couldn't know that his heart was gone with her and that it took him ages to find himself after she disappeared. He promised himself to keep her away from him. To make sure he wouldn't fall for her beauty, mind, eyes, smile, and laugh like he had done as a child. But the second he saw her again, he knew that his heart was hers. Hers to keep, hold, break, play.
But she couldn't know it.... At least not now. Not when he had just snatched her from the Darkling's grasp.
Not when he wasn't ready to love her the way she should be loved.
"That's for me to evaluate and for you to make sure I won't regret this. Besides, I only invest in one-of-a-kind. I don't need more narcissistic saints to go into my office like it was their own." he said after a long silence, without taking his eyes off the window.
He was afraid that his eyes would betray the truth hidden in his stupid heart. He was grateful to all above that she wasn't a heartrender and couldn't feel his treacherous heart beating madly every time he looked at her. He just had to make sure Nina didn't reveal his little secret. He didn't know that the woman had been blackmailed into a similar case by the moon summoner.
"So I'm pretty lucky. I would die if I had to sleep on those inconvenient motel beds."
"Considering how much sleep you actually get, you're unlikely to notice a difference." you gasped, feigning indignation at the mischievous, amused tone of his voice.
"You're a cruel bastard, Kaz Brekker." he finally turned to you with a small smirk on his face. You giggled, only widening his smile.
"Go and check your ring. I hope you won't be threatened by any ugly faces."
"Yes, boss." you saluted, walking towards the door. You opened it and were about to leave when an idea popped into your head. You leaned against the door frame, looking at the man taking his place at the desk. "Kazzie?" you asked sweetly, biting your lip to keep from laughing too soon. The Bastard of the Barrel gave you a questioning look, fearing the familiar tone of your voice and the question coming. "As your fiancée, am I going to get half of your club?"
"Over my dead, cold body." he replied without a second of hesitation, perfectly prepared for such a provocation from your side.
"You know, you need to work on sharing if you plan to be husband material in the future. I feel sorry for your future spouse, unless it'll be your job."
"Go to sleep before I put you in bed myself."
"You should know better than to scare me with a good time, sweetheart!" you shouted back, leaving and pushing your way through the crowd of a few shocked Dregs who had probably heard the part about the fiancée and whom Kaz called to his office as soon as he saw them.
And as soon as he is done with them, Kaz will rip your legs out of your pretty ass. Even Alina and Nina will not be able to help you.
~•♤♤♤•~
The ring worked great. From that night on, you slept like a baby every day. The Darkling's face appeared only occasionally in your nightmares (both bloody ones and… more pleasant ones). But it wasn't REALLY him. Just a messed-up version of your sick imagination.
In the meantime, you trained with Alina and Nina (the woman needed the presence of other Grishas in Brekker's gang; besides, she was an amazing friend, and she also made wonderful waffles); you developed your powers; and you two gossiped with Genya, as she changed your looks every week so that no one would accidentally recognize you (by the way, you learned that David was heading this way to reunite with the love of his life).
You became close to Jes (you had the honor of being trained with HIS PISTOLS) and Inej, whose comforting company was invaluable (as well as the rooftop stealth lessons. Kaz cursed her after the first time you scared him by climbing through his office window and giving you a barrier. Of course you had your mind, and you didn't listen to him. Your unexpected visits to his office only became more frequent.)
So you could say that everything was on its way back to normality.
But it wasn't. Because one fine day, when the crows, Kaz, you, Alina, and Genya were eating breakfast at his club, someone showed up at your door.
Someone you didn't want to see more than the Darkling himself.
"What the fuck is she doing here, if I may culturally ask?" Alina gave you an apologetic look as Baghra walked casually into the crows' kitchen like she belonged here. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Kaz taking any sharp metal objects from the table that you might have used to attack the woman.
You and Baghra had a rough relationship. Due to the fact that you and Aleksander were something, the woman did not look at you very favorably. You had no intention of fawning over a woman who wanted to kill her own son, either. Maybe your feelings for the Darkling were... unclear, but you wouldn't wish anyone, not even your worst enemy, a mother who was willing to stand against her own child, to spurn him instead of doing... anything to help him out of his darkness. It was not in line with your moral views. But no one here seemed to care since they invited the mother of Satan to your table.
"It's nice to see you too, Y/N."
"I don't even have enough respect for you to lie to you and admit that seeing you didn't ruin my day. I will ask one last time..." you got up from the table, shielding Kaz and the crows as you summoned your power. "What are you doing here?"
"My son is looking for you all over the world, do you think I won't try to get to you first before he does?"
"Oh, you've already shown how much you care about outdoing Kirigan in reaching us. I'm asking you, what do you want from us?"
"I came here for you. Because of you, child." you stiffened slightly, wondering what else the old woman had to say. But you would die before admitting that Baghra's help would be invaluable to your little band of rebels. Your pride was both your greatest strength and weakness.
"Well, excuse me, but I have more important things to do than listen to some old lady's ravings. I haven't finished my breakfast yet, and I'm far too sober for another conversation about how everyone wants to use me as a weapon."
"Every day I'm less surprised by how you ended up with my son. You two are a perfect match for each other." she snapped, annoyed at your indifferent attitude.
"I'd suggest you get to the point. You were the one who wanted to meet with us. As our moon summoner mentioned, we don't have to listen to you. And trust me, I have absolutely no intention of stopping her when she wants to kick you out of my club." Kaz stood next to you, measuring the woman with a watchful gaze.
You were proud that he believed in your and Alina's powers and wasn't afraid to provoke the shadow summoner in your presence. You cast a fleeting glance at him, watching as Baghra gave him an appraising look.
"Mr. Breaker. It would be better for you and your club if work with the summoners of the sun and moon ended in Ravka. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
"I never make ill-considered decisions, and certainly not out of fear." he replied with his poker, business face.
"This is only a trait of the greatest winners or greatest losers."
"You don't have to worry about him. Mr. Brekker is always on the winning team." you answered for him, having had enough of this woman. Unfortunately, it looked like she wouldn't be leaving you so soon.
"Turn that light out, girl, before the Grishas swarm here. I won't hurt your boyfriend and his friends." you frowned as you heard Jes coughing in the background, trying not to laugh. With a wave of your hand, the white light around you vanished. You watched in displeasure as a smirk began to form on Baghra's lips.
"He is/I am not my/her boyfriend." together with Kaz, you both uttered these words as Baghra pushed past you. This caused you to turn to one another and exchange equally awkward, perplexed looks.
"Whatever, just get your lovebird butts over here." she murmured as she unfolded the map on the table and took a few items out of her bag. You snorted at seeing a small wooden statue of Aleksander.
It was going to be a long and tiring morning.
~•♤♤♤•~
"We have to hurry before your boy gets here. Good thing he is walking with the cane, at least it keeps him from sneaking up on us." Baghra growled at you. She'd only been here a week, and she'd already ruled everyone. You were no longer surprised at where Aleksander inherited his incredible self-confidence and arrogance.
"For the love of God, I'm telling you for the last time, KAZ IS NOT MY BOYFRIEND. Besides, if I were you, I wouldn't underestimate him. You could actually learn from him. You'll need a cane soon, too."
"Can you two just stop arguing for once and focus on the task at hand?" the sun summoner lingered, following you to the basement of the Crow Club.
"I'm sorry, Alina, that I'd rather banter with that witch than figure out how to seduce her son, lull his guard down, pluck the antlers of a wonderful steg out of his hand, and break the link between us once and for all."
"Start by undoing a few buttons on your blouse and letting your hair down; that should be enough for him to lose his mind." she advised you, making you and Alina shudder, both equally abashed.
"Seriously?" you asked mockingly, giving her a disgusted look. Nevertheless, you followed the woman's suggestion. "What is the next step? Shall I wear some nice underwear?"
"Not necessarily, but it would be nice to take off that ring. I doubt Aleksander would appreciate that someone other than himself gave you such gaudy jewelry." you snorted, taking off the only thing keeping the Darkling from crossing the walls of your mind.
You bypassed Baghra's outstretched hand and handed the ring to Alina. The older woman snorted indignantly at what you stuck your tongue out at. She didn't expect you to trust her with anything, even something as small as Kaz's ring, right?
"Done. What's next?"
"You need to make a connection. Every time he thinks of you or you think of him, you seek each other out and make a link. Imagine his face, voice, and silhouette; recall some memory associated with him; do anything to have him in front of your eyes. It should work and take you to where he is now. Just like when you two were getting into each other's dreams before Mr. Brekker gave you this ring."
"I did not seek him of my own free will. It just happened." you defended yourself, not wanting anyone to think you were looking for the Darkling like a lost puppy.
"You know him. He will continue to invade your thoughts and your life to convince you of the error of your ways and choices. This ring can work now, but what happens when you two get stronger in the future? It will stop working. You will be condemned to endure his pervasive presence. In the morning, afternoon, nights, and midnights. He won't let you go. Never. You cannot extract the stag from your own body. So you must find a way to block him permanently. Not by some magic ring."
You sighed, realizing she was right. You will be free of him only when any bond between you is gone. The only thing you were afraid of was that it existed between you and the Darkling long before you killed the stag...
Darkness and its light. Moon and shadow. Destined to be together. United at the end of the day.
"And what if I fail and he chokes me, stabs me, or just uses the cut on me?"
"We will observe the energy around you. If we see too many shadows or your light, we'll pull you out."
"All right. Let's get this over with." you sat down, leaning against the wall of the Crow Club basement, praying to all of Inej's mighty saints that your plan would work.
You closed your eyes, remembering the moment before your big performance at the winter fete.
You had to pretend that you didn't know Kaz, and then you had no idea what he was doing here wearing one of the soldiers uniforms. He promised to explain everything to you, but then Aleksander came.
"I'll take her from here." he said to Kaz, letting him know that he was no longer needed.
But he has not left you. Aleksander ignored him, examining your kefta carefully. It was beautiful. Genya decorated it with silver threads and embroidered stars and moons in different phases. However, the fact that probably delighted him the most was its black (but actually dark navy blue) color. But he didn't care about the true color of your kefta as long as it looked black to any other observer.
A clear signal that you were his moon.
"I have something for you." he whispered as he leaned closer to you so that your noses were practically touching. He pulled something shiny out of his sleeve. He held the silver chain up to your eye level so you could see the pendant. Moon with a star. You shifted your gaze from the shiny object to those mesmerizing black eyes staring at you in pure adoration. "I know you're practically festooned with these symbols, but I wanted you to know..." he interrupted, brushing your hair over one shoulder so he could place the necklace over your neck. He planted a quick, tender kiss on your nape as he clicked the silver jewelry. "That you're not just a Saint Y/N, summoner of the moon. You're mine moonlight in the worst darkness of mine. My hope and peace. The only light I let through my shadows."
You grabbed the pendant, noticing your initials carved into the back of the moon.
"It's beautiful." you turned in his arms to whisper in his ear, making him shiver as you kissed his earlobe. "Aleksander..."
~•♤♤♤•~
You opened your eyes.
A dim light illuminated Kirigan's war room.
You did it. Now all you had to do was seduce him. Piece of cake.
You let yourself watch him flick through some papers, wrinkling his nose and occasionally running a hand through his hair. The exact same one with the stag antler still stuck in it. You shook your head, remembering your task. You had to outsmart him. And in such a wise way that it didn't cross his mind that you might have bad intentions towards him.
"Aleksander." you whispered as you stepped out of the shadows. The man either really didn't notice you or he was a brilliant actor, judging by the pure shock that painted his face the moment he turned to meet your gaze. "You seem surprised to see me."
"I am." his mask of indifference and self-confidence quickly fell back into place. "But perhaps I shouldn't be. I should have known you'd prove to be an apt pupil. Not many can learn that trick." he placed the papers on the desk and leaned against it. "But after our last meeting, I had the impression that you didn't want to see me again. What changed your mind to seek me out?"
"I hate to say this, but I realized you were right."
"How so?" he began to watch you with interest, too curious to know what you were going to say to repay you for stabbing him last time. The fact that he didn't pounce on you with his shadows the moment he saw you gave you an odd sense of confidence. Maybe you could have made it.
"I was meant for more. And you were the first person to see me as I truly am. First to help me realize what I'm meant for. First to tech me how to use my power and how to see it as something more incredible than terrifying. First to see, I was more than a scared little girl. That I was powerful Grisha and I can do anything I want." with every word you said and every step you took towards him, you could see his mask crack open, revealing his true emotions. However, there was still a shadow of uncertainty and suspicion in his eyes. You had to remove it if you wanted to win this battle.
"Was I? And what about Alina? Or your helpful friends that take you away from Little Palace?" you hoped you didn't show that his words affected you. You were afraid that somehow he might have discovered a little help from Kaz and his crows.
"They… they don't understand the power growing within me. I thought that Alina might share my feelings, but … it seems to me that we understand our possibilities completely differently when it comes to our powers. And my friends… I think they're more afraid of what I can do than admire it as… as you did."
"That's not their fault. I did try to warn you. Tried to explain that with so much power that flows in our veins, usually comes fear from the side of our loved ones."
"I know. I think I'm starting to finally understand that now." you took one slow step towards him, feeling his watchful gaze on you. "There are no others like us, and they never will be. We are connected by our powers. Alina can live without us, but you and me… you and me are destined to work together and to stand by our sides. There is no darkness without light, but it's the moon that brings it into the night and that lives among the shadows, working with them… Like calls to like, right, Aleksander?"
In his eyes, you could see how much he wanted to believe you, how much he wanted the words you said to be true... but you knew that Aleksander lived too long to believe only empty words. He needed conclusive proof that you were on his side and that you were only his moon. And you had to convince him somehow.
"As I delighted as I am that you found your way to me, what do you want?"
"That thing that binds us. I think you fear it more than you actually care to admit."
"I fear everything there is to fear; it makes me strong. I understand things about power that you've had years yet to learn, moonlight."
"Well, as you said, with a good teacher, I'm a very apt pupil. But I think we both know… that it's not all about power, though, is it?" you walked the distance between you two and stood chest-to-chest with him. "What about the other bond we share? That one I was avoiding for too long." you slowly cup his cheek, making him close his eyes at the touch of your soft skin. You tenderly stroked one of his black scars on his cheek, which made the Black Heretic sighe in relief. "I want you, Aleksander." he opened his eyes, looking at you in disbelief when he tried to seek any sight of lies on your face. "And being in your presence terrifies me as much as making me feel… like I finally belonged somewhere. Like I was made by saints to be next to you. It felt... right in some crazy way."
"Love is for madmen, Y/N. And I've already told you…" you shivered as his cold fingertips touched the hot skin of your neck. His fingers went to the silver necklace—your only sin against your friends. He took the pendant in his hands and kissed it, not taking his eyes off yours. "You're my moonlight. Nothing has changed, and I doubt it ever will... for both of us."
You pulled him by the hair to connect your lips in a long-awaited kiss, too annoyed with how long you had to work him out. (Or too scared that his words are true.) You moaned as he bit your lips, and in one sweeping motion, he scooped you up off the floor and sat you on his desk.
He pulled away from you, dropping his kefta on the floor, and went back to kissing you as if you were the only one that mattered in this world. But the next amplifier's whereabouts map you laid on as he kissed your soul out of you was a glaring reminder that you could never have truly had him.
You would never be his first choice.
"Forgive me for stabbing you, then." you whispered into his mouth as you broke apart for a moment to catch your breath. He pressed into you more fervently than before, caressing your waist tenderly.
"I will have kissed these tempting, sweet lips, even if it means I'll get stabbed by you, every time I do it."
That was good to know, you thought, throwing your arms around his shoulders and slowly pulling out the dagger from your sleeve as he continued to kiss you greedily, like he wanted to sate himself with you while he still had you in his arms.
"Your words, not mine." you murmured, catching his mouth with yours while driving the dagger into his hand. He snarled, breaking away from you and trying in vain to yank the metal out of your hand. You tried to pry the last stag's bone out of him.
But suddenly, just as you were about to do it, you find yourself back in the basement of the Crows Club.
You were breathing fast, frantically looking around the room. Kaz was kneeling a step away from you and watching you worriedly as you tried to calm down.
From the cane that was on your leg and his firm grip on your arm, you figured out pretty quickly why you suddenly came back. You yanked your arm from his hand in your anger, forgetting his phobia of touch and how much of an achievement it was for him to hold your arm.
"What the hell, Brekker?! I had him! I could end this right there! UGH! Why did you let him break our connection?!" you screamed in frustration, looking resentfully at Alina and Baghra.
"You nearly blew yourself out with your power, and they couldn't bring you back."
"I had it under control, Kaz!"
"Oh, really?" he asked mockingly, struggling to his feet with the help of his cane and walking over to you with equal anger painted in his eyes. "Because it didn't look good from my point of view. You could have blown up the whole club..."
"Of course you would only care about your stupid, fucking club! Forgive me, Dirtyhands. Next time I'm going to save the damn world from the Darkling, I'll pick up a place other than one of your fucking bases!" you yelled at him, pushing past a shocked Alina and Baghra.
"Y/N, come back here!" he shouted after you. The distinctive sound of his cane told you he was following you.
"I'm not your fucking property, Brekker! I can go anywhere I want!" you screamed, running as fast and far for him as you could, thanking everyone above that Brekker wasn't able to catch up with you. You needed a moment to yourself. And you only knew one place in all of Ketterdam where you could be truly alone.
~•♤♤♤•~
For a long time, you hated harbour. It was a reminder of your weakness—a reminder of a girl who got kidnapped by slave hunters. Then you met Aleksander and became one of the strongest Grisha. From then harbour was for you to remind you of the birth of Saint Y/N. Moon summoner. It was funny for you to see how easy it is to get on the ship and go anywhere you want. Be anyone you want. But you don't have this choice anymore. Not until your past stops chasing you whenever you close your eyes.
"I knew you'd be here." Kaz's voice below you made you shiver, but you didn't grace him with your gaze. "You'd be too merciful to me by choosing an easily accessible spot, wouldn't you?" he grumbled as he clambered next to you on the crates of goods. He sighed as he managed to climb up. He tossed his cane, catching it spectacularly and resting it against the crate beneath you. He leaned forward, staring out at the harbour with you, when the wind blew his hair, messing up his always perfectly styled hairdo.
"Nobody made you follow me around, Kazzle." you murmured, casting a fleeting glance at him, grinning mischievously at how tired he was of climbing crates. Someone here was in bad shape. Brekker must sit with these plans and papers for too long.
"I did." you turned your head to meet his piercing gaze. "I already told you. I take care of my investments."
"Maybe you're making a mistake."
"I'm never mistaken. I know when and how much to invest in something valuable."
"But what if I'm a lost cause? What if you're wrong this time? Why do you think I'm done with the Darkling? Me and him have so much in common... what if I become like him? Are you not afraid? That one day, in my naiveté, I'd decide Kirigan was worth a second chance and betray you? That one day I'll stop controlling my power and that I'll hurt you? How can you sit here so calmly and..."
"Because I know you better than myself. I may not believe in saints, but I believe in you, Y/N. I will always believe in you."
You swallowed, looking down in embarrassment. You didn't deserve this.
"I get caught up in it sometimes. That I return with memories to the Little Palace. I wonder what I could have done differently to prevent all this. How could I reason with him, what could I do to dissuade him from his plans. How to behave, what to say out loud, and what to keep to yourself. And I'm furious with Baghra that, being his mother, she didn't fight for him to the end; she gave up before we could do ANYTHING for him together. And I curse myself every time I feel guilty, knowing that I left him utterly alone. So tell me, Kaz, knowing now all these doubts growing within me, do you still believe in me?"
The killing silence told you everything you wanted to know.
"Come on. Go right ahead, Kazzie. Call me a fool, an idiot who wants to believe that everyone deserves someone close, someone they can trust. Who stupidly believes in giving people a second chance." you said, afraid to look up to see the revulsion in the eyes of the only person you could always count on.
Kaz said your name, but you ignored him completely, feeling tears slowly welling up in your eyes. Suddenly you felt the cold steel crow's head of his cane under your chin. Brekker forced you to look into his eyes. And you thanked all the saints for the tenderness that was still present in them.
"You know, I don't think that about you. You are a Grisha. The moon summoner. The only beacon of hope in the darkness. I think that in your job description lies faith even in the most deprived, lost, and broken souls."
"I didn't know that poetic side of you, Brekker."
"I've changed since the last time you saw me."
"Really?" you asked, nodding at his gloves and cane. He caught your eye, gripping the crow's head tighter. "Hey. You have every right to do that, Kaz, okay? I was kidding, and I didn't know it was still a sensitive subject. I'm sorry. Apart from that, I can name more. For example, you still have a stick in your ass when it comes to pranks. It was too easy to get on your nerves with Jes." you said, trying to make a joke to lighten the atmosphere.
"Looking now at you, it's better for humanity that you haven't become a saint. Saints, protect some wretch who would have asked you for help." you smiled at him, glad he understood your intentions.
"Now, I feel hurt, Kazzie. Wouldn't you pray to me if they hung my holy image up here somewhere?" you asked, offended, putting your hand over your heart.
He knew he would spend hours, days, and weeks praying to her, only to see her face again and hear the voice of the Saint of his heart...
"No. No saint has ever watched over me. It wouldn't make sense to pray to you either. Especially since I knew you personally before you became a mighty Grisha."
"Well, I'm no saint yet, but since I'm your newest investment, I guess that means I'm supposed to serve you in some way. And since I'm not going to be your errand dog or spy crow, I guess a good compromise would be if I became your bodyguard. Then you can't say that there's no saint watching over you."
"I don't need a guardian angel."
"It's good then that I'm far from being an angel." you stared at each other, the wind blowing your hair, as you enjoyed the understanding between you and the unspoken acknowledgment of your closeness.
Kaz Brekker could not have a weakness. This city would use it against him very quickly. But he felt that perhaps his weakness could be powerful enough to be his greatest asset instead of his darkest burden. Maybe he didn't have to worry about her that much.
"Ketterdam was boring without you. It was also harder to work without your… skills." he said uncertainly, averting his gaze from your piercing, mesmerizing eyes.
"Is that your way to tell me you missed me?" you were teasing him and pushing his cane. He almost fell over when you broke his only support. You almost couldn't prevent yourself from laughing.
"We could have gained much more kruge if you had been here."
"I didn't want to leave." you whispered, involuntarily remembering the day they kidnapped you.
"I know." he leaned towards you, forcing you to look into his eyes. "You don't have to worry about them. I made sure they were six feet deep underground before you even set foot in Ketterdam." your heart warmed at the thought that he was chasing them for you.
He made sure you were 100% safe and comfortable before he brought you back home. Home. You didn't think you'd find him among the crows, thieves, and the Dreg Club. You didn't think you'd feel this way about him—one of the men whose lifestyle was far from normal and safe.
"You're getting soft in your old age, Brekker." you replied with a half smile, holding back unwanted tears. You weren't that weak girl anymore. You were Grisha. And thanks to the man sitting next to you, you were (almost) free. You grabbed his cane, right next to the crow's head, where Kaz's hands were. His gaze flicked to where your hands were so close together. He turned his head to meet your watery eyes. "Thank you, Kaz. For everything. It means a lot to me. Even if it was foolish to break into the Darkling's palace and kidnap us like sacks of potatoes."
"It was the perfect plan! Nobody noticed us." he was indignant, immediately defending his action.
"Yeah, but what I and Alina get hit with every time Jesper and you steer that wooden cart over rocks is ours. You could really choose a path that wasn't made of stones."
"Next time, it's up to you to make a plan to escape the 500-year-old shadow summoner. We'll see how you do." he snorted, offended, but didn't move an inch. Contrary. His hand moved closer to yours, wrapping precariously around yours on his cane.
"Less than a week back in Ketterdam, and you're already letting me into your plans? Aww, I love you too, Kazzie."
He would give all the kruge of this world to hear those words from you for the rest of his life... and it surprised him that he wasn't afraid to admit it to himself at all.
"And I almost forgot how annoying you can be."
"Don't worry. I have all the time in the world to shrink your inflated ego and remind you of that, boss." Kaz held his breath. He stared at you searchingly, trying to find in your face the answer to whatever question he was asking in his head. You unknowingly scooted closer to each other so that your shoulders rested against each other.
You were much closer to each other before. Kaz (on his good days) even felt comfortable hugging you for a while. After years apart, you thought it would take ages for him to get used to your presence again and the brief touch without going underwater with Jordi.
But you were here. Holding hands, leaning against each other, and staring into each other's eyes.
You shivered as you felt his breath against your cheek when he leaned a little closer to you, testing his border.
"You're shining." he whispered softly, hypnotized, afraid to break the silence between you.
"What?"
"Your eyes are shining." his trembling hand took your cheek as you were watching him speechless. Even in your wildest dreams, you wouldn't suppose he would hold you like that. He truly changed. He beat Pekka, and now the King of Ketterdam was fighting with his demons. You were so proud of him and also sad that you weren't with him at the beginning of his road to healing. "And the light is coming out of your skin. You're shining like a star for lost souls."
"You're not lost... not anymore." you whispered, your voice trembling, fully understanding what he had left unsaid.
"I was. But now the moonlight is lighting up Ketterdam's darkness again."
"Kaz... I..." you held your breath, staring at him in anticipation. You didn't know what for. All you knew was that taking your eyes off him for even a second was an unforgivable crime.
Your noses were almost touching, your lips were the closest you've known each other. And Kaz was as calm as if he'd never had a haphephobia. As if the situation with Jordi never happened. You were afraid his waters would finally rise, interrupting your moment, but as soon as your foreheads touched, all the logical thoughts in your head went to hell. It was just you and him.
And you would still enjoy that closeness if the sound of breaking glass and Jesper's curses hadn't driven you apart.
"Here you are! How the hell did you get in there?! Get down! We're leaving in half an hour!" Jesper shouted to you from below and disappeared as quickly as he appeared. You cleared your throat, realized what Jes said after a long moment.
"We are leaving?" you asked, surprised. Bastard didn't say a word about going anywhere.
"Yes. I'll explain everything to you on the ship." he gave you a brush-off as he began his downward journey.
"On the ship? Kaz, what have you planned?!" you shouted angry as you followed him.
~•♤♤♤•~
"This is the dumbest plan ever made, and believe me, I've been to more than one of his idiotic ideas." you said, pointing at the offended Kaz.
Your great friends (and Baghra) have decided to sneak into the Darkling's palace, steal his maps and war plans, and set the Little Palace on fire.
You started to doubt their good sanity... or sobriety.
"Sooner or later, we have to sneak in there. Aleksander has stolen from me all the books and records of our ancestors; he is in possession of immense power, and we can not allow him to make use of it." you clenched your fists, almost ready to pounce on the woman for revealing the Darkling's true name.
"Who is Aleksander?" you ignored Kaz's question, nervously twirling the ring he gave you on your finger.
"Was he able to steal something from YOU? And you let him do it? How surprised I am."
"What are you implying?"
"I implying that we are in some huge coach driven by your men, leaving Ketterdam on your initiative and entering the lion's mouth because you said so. In my place, you'd be suspicious too."
"The odds of me betraying you are as high as the odds that you will."
"And why is that?" you hissed, furious at how easily she got on your nerves.
"Aleksander has a knack for manipulating people. A few sweet words, and even your boyfriend won't be able to count on your devotion anymore."
"Watch your mouth. I'm not her boyfriend." Kaz growled, tensing up next to you, thereby stopping your quarrel. Baghra shrugged, continuing her quiet conversation with Alina. In your mind, you were planning the old lady's slow death until someone's hand grabbed yours in a strong grip.
You turned your head towards Kaz. He stared blankly out the window, completely ignoring your gaze. Instead, he started drawing circles on your palm, trying to calm you down somehow. You turned your head in the opposite direction, smiling to yourself at the tender gesture. Unbeknownst to you, Kaz had the same smirk as yours on his face.
The rest of the trip to the city was uneventful. As planned, Alina and you stayed in Baghra's secret stash while the rest went off to play heroes. Your job was to distract the Darkling, and Alina was supposed to watch over you.
You'd agree to their plan if your role wasn't just to stand by while others risked their lives trying to get the information you all needed.
But you decided not to argue with the others about it this time. After all, they couldn't control you once you got into the palace. You might as well have snooped around, looked for what you needed, and done most of the work for them. Closing your eyes and getting ready to connect with the Darkling, you only hoped that your little disobedience would go unnoticed.

You just finished searching Kirigan's study, war room, and bedroom. You were on your way to the last room - the library, when you bumped into the one person you wanted to avoid.
You were paralysed as soon as you saw him walking down the hall. You hoped he wouldn't look in your direction, but the general (alert as always) glanced at you briefly before disappearing from your view. You had the faintest hope that he would think you were a vision, but all of it vanished when you felt a hand gently wrap around your neck and pin you against the wall.
"You either have too much free time or you enjoy haunting me at random times, little moon." you didn't answer, too scared that the moment he touched you, all your power took on a life of its own, merging with his shadows, as it usually does when your skins meet for the first time after a long separation. You were defenceless. Kirigan frowned, watching you with growing interest. "Speechless? Not any irritating responses? Do you fear me, Y/N?" his taunts brought you to your senses, forcing you to calm down immediately. You couldn't wait for Alina to be rescued. You had to fight him yourself.
"That's what you want, isn't it? To have everyone and everything under control, too scared to say or do anything against you."
"Fear is a powerful ally and also loyal."
"Not as loyal and lasting as love, trust, respect." you tried to break free from his grip, but all attempts to remove his hand from your neck proved futile. You were lucky that instead of tightening the grip and cutting off your air, he just wrapped his other arm around your waist, pulling you closer so that your faces were mere millimetres apart. "We could have had it, Aleksander. All of it. All you had to do was set me free and make me your equal."
"You'll come to feel it towards me someday. For now… even though I truly want to, I have no time for you, moonlight. Your friends are waiting for me. But don't get the wrong impression…" he leaned towards you, stroking your cheek tenderly as he whispered in your ear. "I will be back for you, my Y/N. Wherever you are hiding from me."
You shivered as he kissed your temple, making this terrifying promise to you. At some point, his shadows enveloped you completely and sent you back to the room where you and Alina were hiding.
And after one look at the sun summoner, you both knew what you had to do.
~•♤♤♤•~
You couldn't remember the last time you ran so fast in your entire life. It must have been back in your Ketterdam days, doing some little errands for the Dregs.
But this time, you weren't running to save your life. You ran to save Kaz Brekker's ass, who was the only one (not counting Inej, who was already hidden somewhere with Alina, waiting for you in harbour) who didn't return from his mission. As you expected, everything went to hell without you, and if you and Alina hadn't arrived, half of the crows (including Baghra) would have been captured by Aleksander's grishas. You wouldn't feel sorry for the old woman, but Alina insisted on saving her.
Jes, Wylan, Nina and Baghra searched other parts of the Little Palace, trying to burn everything in their path. You could still make it. If only Brekker hadn't gotten lost in the meantime. You knew you should go with him. You've always been a team player, and pairing you with Alina for this mission and leaving you behind was their worst idea.
You promised yourself that the next time you'd strap that risky idiot to your hip.
That's why you breathed a sigh of relief when you saw him at the end of the corridor. But instead of running up to him and yelling at him for his thoughtlessness, you hid in the shadows as he backed away slowly. Someone had to catch him. You caught his eye for a moment, glad he noticed you and started to head your way. Thanks to this, you could assassinate his attacker and try to escape from the palace.
Piece of cake. If he wasn't talking to a fucking Darkling.
"I know you kidnapped my moon summoner. Now you're going to tell me where you stashed her." you cursed internally, feeling yourself start to panic. You guys were officially screwed.
"We didn't take her. She fled on her own." you marvelled at how Kaz could still keep his composure with an angry Darkling a few feet in front of him. Sometimes you forget how mentally strong he was.
"I don't doubt in it… where is she? I won't ask you again."
"I don't know. I don't own her… but it's pretty clear she wasn't interested in being a captive anymore."
Aleksander got even angrier at the little insinuation that Kaz took better care of you, that he didn't treat you like an asset, unlike the general. You cursed Dirtyhands for wanting to mock and taunt the Darkling, even though you could see that he wasn't so confident around him.
"I heard about you. And your crows. It would be a shame if something happened to such a talented group." the Darkling summoned some of his shadows, causing Kaz to back away and reach for the light grenade that you and Wylan had prepared. "It's good for you that you have the decency to show signs of fear."
"I'm afraid of what I must."
"And yet you are not so defenceless." Kaz raised an inquiring eyebrow. "Don't make a fool of yourself, Mr. Brekker. I can feel my moon's power everywhere. Especially when it's imbedded so much into one small object."
You tensed, remembering that you had given Kaz the necklace before he left for the Little Palace. A necklace whose pendant you poured so much moonlight into that no shadows could surround him while wearing it or only holding it.
Defence against the Darkling. Specially prepared for situations like this. However, handing it to him, you hoped the two would never meet, growling at each other like two rabid dogs.
"Y/N must have strong feelings for you to give you some of her power. And you for her. Putting your people and yourself at risk, your profit, your club. In the name of what, Mr. Brekker?"
"If you did thorough research on me, you'd know that all of Ketterdam knows I don't need a reason to do things."
"You'll never fully appreciate what she really is. But that's alright. Because I do." Aleksander let Dirtyhands' insult pass over his ears, trying to annoy him that much, so he let his guard down. You knew very well that method, just like you knew that Kaz wasn't foolish to fall for it.
"You've right. I'll never use her as a weapon or treat her like a saint. That's not what she wants. You may understand her powers, but you have no idea who she really is. What's in her mind. What are her dreams and desires. All you care about is her power, which I don't give a damn if she has or not. You see her only as a moon summoner. Not Y/N. You don't know the woman she was before Grisha's thing. You will never know how amazing and indescribable she was before Ravka. This is part of her that only I was allowed to see. You can't change the fact that I know her better than you."
"You're forgetting one important fact. You are a child, and she is Grisha. Y/N may take years to forgive me… but I can wait. Take away my shadows, and I still have something you don't. Time. Meanwhile, you will grow old. Your hair will grey, but she will remain ageless. Like me. Not mention your little inconvenience. Do you think you'll be able to touch her for more than a few minutes before your body grows old? That you'll be able to give her the life she deserves? We both know that one day, maybe a year from now, maybe fifty, she will realise that she has only one equal. There are no others like us, and there never will be. Even you can't change that, Mr. Brekker." he gave him a hostile look, laughing mockingly as he noticed that Kaz continued to back up with each step the Darkling took towards him until he did not stand in front of your hiding place. "Don't worry. I'm not going to kill you. Time will do it for me." he summoned more of his shadows, wanting to scare him with his power. You three knew very well that with your necklace around his neck, no cut would kill him."You should have stayed in Ketterdam, Mr. Brekker."
At this point, you both decided to step in. Kaz threw his grenade, and you summoned your power, blinding the two of them. You grabbed Kaz's arm, and you both ran (as fast as his leg would allow). You stopped only a few corridors and stairs further, at the crossroads where you were all supposed to meet. Along the way, you avoided several fires that the tidemakers were busy with.
"What are you doing here?!" he growled furiously at you as you finally stopped, only making you more angry at his recklessness and attitude. He attacked and insulted the most powerful grisha. An 18-year-old with a cane and no powers.
"What am I doing here?! You tell me, what are you doing! You made him mad for no reason! You think now that he knows your identities, he'll let you go so easily? He will hunt you as long as he lives, just like me and Alina! Congratulations, Brekker!"
"I knew the risk." he replied angrily, looking around all four corridors.
"No, you didn't. You'd know a flimsy toy like that one, fucking grenade wouldn't be enough for him with all the amplifiers he's got."
"Well, I guess your little gift was strong enough to protect me. Which brings me to the question… why am I the only one blessed with this power from you?" he asked as he walked over to you, standing a few inches in front of you. You were both panting with quick anger, rage, and adrenaline, which was slowly draining from your systems.
"It's not your business, Brekker." you growled into his face and took a step, trying to avoid him, but his firm grip on your elbow stopped you.
You turned to face him, ready to yank your arm out of his grip and scream at him to fuck off, but all thoughts flew out of your head as soon as you looked into his mesmerising eyes, which were looking at you with concern and… love.
"It is my business." he leaned closer to you, just enough for you to feel his warmth and his scent, and far enough away not to touch you any more than he already did. "You... you're my most important business. And if something happens to you, if he catches you again..." he sighed, shaking his head, trying to find the right words as he licked his annoyed lips, unconsciously drawing your gaze to them and making you hold your breath for a moment, wanting something as forbidden and holy as kissing them. "I don't know how to... express my feelings. I don't know if I even understand them well enough. All I know is that I would rather die than see you enslaved and sorrowful... and it pains me to know that I'm too weak to protect you. That I'll always be too weak FOR YOU."
"You are literally everything but weak. In my eyes, you're the strongest person I know, Kaz. One of the very few to whom I would entrust my life in the blink of an eye."
"And yet I'm not enough for Grisha's love."
"How could you not be enough for something you already have?" Kaz's head snapped up as he watched you, befuddled in complete silence. You hesitantly reached for his hand, giving him enough time to pull away. He did not do. "And because I love you, I cannot be selfish with you. I cannot risk your life just because I have loved you since we were stupid teenagers." he squeezed your hand, too overwhelmed by his emotions to say anything. Fortunately, you understood him without any words.
Slowly, as if time had slowed down just for you two, he leaned towards you, resting his forehead against yours. You stood like that for a moment, enjoying the other's presence, forgetting that the palace was burning around you and probably 100 Grishas were chasing you.
"I will have you, Kaz Brekker. But only when it's safe for both of us." you promised him, whispering with your eyes still closed. "And for that to happen, I have to stay here. I have to make sure he doesn't go after you, that he will be distracted by me instead of planning your death.." you were about to extricate yourself from his grip, but the man only pulled you closer to him, not wanting to let you go.
"Please, don't. Stay with me. You're not a saint or a hero. You said it yourself. More than I could count."
"Kaz…" you took the ring off and put it on his little finger. "Keep it for me until I'm back. As a promise that whatever is going to happen next… I will be back for you." testing your luck, you placed a quick, tender kiss on his finger, feeling him tremble under your lips.
Before you got a chance to change your mind, you ran in the opposite direction, following the voice of the fighting Grishas.
You didn't turn around. You didn't steal a second glance at him, even though you knew he was watching you until you were out of sight. You knew the moment you looked into his eyes again, you'd change your mind.
You had to be strong.
For both of you. For your common future.
~•♤♤♤•~
When you regained consciousness, you weren't surprised that your hands had been handcuffed, so you couldn't use your powers. You were surprised to be greeted by the familiar sheets of Aleksander's comfortable bed.
And the Darkling himself was lying right next to you with his face towards you.
His eyes were closed, giving you a good look at the darker shadows under his eyes than before. Without knowing why, they disturbed you more than those lazily hovering around the bed. For a moment, you listened to his measured, calm breathing, which would probably confuse anyone else and give the illusory belief that the man next to you is sleeping. But you knew him much better than to fall for such a simple trick.
"I know how you breathe when you're sleeping, Aleksander."
"Maybe I was trying to fall asleep."
"Wearing a kefta? Doubtful." he opened one eye, staring at you silently. You felt your heart start beating faster from the nerves. You had no idea why you were here. Or at least you didn't want to admit it to yourself, so you decided to play the fool. "Are the dungeons undergoing some kind of refurbishment, or are they so full that you haven't found another place for me?"
He stared at you silently, deep in thought. He took his time to answer, playing with the strands of your hair that had escaped your bun from an earlier fight.
"It didn't seem like the right place for you" he finally whispered, making you even more suspicious.
"And where is my right place? After I stabbed you in the back so many times? In your bed? In your arms? As a weapon for your use? Where do you see me, Aleksander?"
"By my side. I've always seen you by my side." he answered at once, without a trace of hesitation in his voice. His shadow circled the room, caressing you from time to time. You didn't know if he was planning to let your guard down or if he had completely lost his mind.
"I don't understand. You should be mad at me. Why don't you hate me? Why are you still looking at me like... like you really have feelings for me? This is another one of your games, right? You want me to go completely crazy this time, don't you?"
"No, my little saint moon." he whispered, undaunted by your anger, gently cupping your chin so you had to look him in the eye. "All I ever wanted was someone equal to me. Why should I get mad at you when all you're doing is trying to find your way to me?"
"I don't…"
"Then why did you let them catch you? Don't try to lie to me, Y/N. I was there. I saw with my own eyes how you backed away from running away at the last moment. Why?"
"You know why." you whispered in a shaky voice. You closed your eyes, trying to protect yourself from the Black Heretic's penetrating gaze and show him the tears beginning to form in your eyes. "I have a million reasons why I should give you up, why I should hate you more than anyone else, but the truth is… my heart wants what it wants. And I don't think I can resist this anymore." you couldn't control your tears, but from the tender touch of his hand as he wiped them from your cheek and the clank of the handcuffs opening, you figured they were necessary for him to believe you.
"You have no idea how long…"
"No." you cut him off before he could say anything more." I have one question for you. Answer it right, and I'll forget about the last few months. Answer it right, and I promise you that you will never have to be alone again, that I'll always be by your side, along with your shadows and everything else that you truly are. That I will accept my destiny as being your moon. I won't let anyone scare me away from you ever again. I just… I need you to be completely honest with me. This one time." you cursed yourself at how weak your voice sounded when he grabbed your hand, kissing tenderly the places where the handcuffs were marked. "You don't have to tell me your whole plan; I just want to know… are all of these lies, battles, wars, deaths… just to keep the Grishas safe? You have no other intention behind this than to give our people home, where they don't have to be afraid of people who hate us and our powers?"
"I swear to you, my little moonstone, there is no other reason. I'm not a maniac drunk on power, as everybody tells you. I just want our people to be safe; I want to give them a world where we can explore the abilities of our power without fear of getting killed for being extraordinary. I can only do this with you by my side. As my equal. As a person who thinks like me and can keep up with my plans. As my partner. As the only one I can trust."
"Good." you nodded, cupping his cheek as you pulled him closer to you, so your lips caught each other again.
And maybe it was naive to think he bought your story about being completely devoted to him; maybe it was just another one of his games; maybe this time he really believed your words. Or maybe he was tired of pretending you didn't feel that strange attraction every time you were together.
You did not know. And you didn't want to know.
You gave into that burning desire every time you were near him, explaining to yourself that you had to earn his trust.
But there was much more to this one kiss than just lust.
It was a promise to you.
You will break his heart and make him hate you. You will drive him mad, drive him away, and then he will cast you out. Aleksander will come to think of you not as his lover but as his greatest enemy. Alina, Baghra and you gonna end the circle of unnecessary deaths.
And then you will finally be free...
Or at least... you will kill you both while trying to hate him as you should from the beginning.

What doctrines did the lamb choose and have they ever sacrifice someone?
Crimson Angel AU - Doctrines, Governing, Rites, and More
This is gonna be a long one! Gonna be going over Doctrines, the way the Cult is governed, and how the Sin Rites work within the lamb, Anthea's, cult!
(since world-building is fun and I got a lot of ideas-though I apologize in advance for how much this diverts a bit from in-game/how longgggg this is lol)
Also the pretty boarders are by @/lambouillet
Tumblr media
Doctrines
Sustenance
Ritual Feast
Grass Eater (Only relied on in emergencies once farms are set up)
Ritual of Harvest
Belief in Prohibition
Afterlife
Belief in Afterlife
Ritual of Resurrection/Funeral (Anthea has both-followers can pick what they'd prefer prior)
Respect Your Elders (especially since the elder, Nona, rules the kitchen)
Grieve the Fallen
Work and Worship
Faithful Trait
Inspire
The Glory of Construction
Holy Day
Law and Order
Ascend Follower Ritual
Wedding
Belief in Absolution
Loyalty Enforcer (Really just Anthea having someone trustworthy in charge when out crusading-if there's any issues, fights, ect. its that person's job to settle it or at least get it under control till the lamb returns. If gone for more than 3 days Anthea also has Ratau come by to assist the enforcer, though later on Narinder takes on that role)
Possessions
Extort Tithes (Funds typically are used to obtain rare goods from the market in Pilgram's Passage, such as specialty herbs for the medical tent or kitchens, metals for the smith, specialty tools, weapons to give missionaries, that sort of thing)
Belief in Materialism (Anthea has a major focus early-on on setting up more permanent settlements)
Ritual of Enrichment
Devotee Trait

Sacrifice
Sacrifice is something Anthea has only done once (technically twice as it was two people in one), but it was only as a last resort. When they and Narinder managed to figure out how to revive the twins, and realized that it was via properly breaking the spell which chained him as intended through the sacrifice of a devote heart, the lamb didn't want to go through with it as it went against their promise to protect those in their care.
Yet, unbeknownst to the two, the followers had been realizing something was amiss throughout the week the two were figuring it out. A pair of terroir twins, Poppy and Tristen, had been tasked by the others with spying on the two to find out what, then reported back to everyone what they overheard. From there they all debated on how to proceed, knowing the Lamb wouldn't pick a sacrifice on their own. Everything from finding heretics to trick into being devote to drawing straws was discussed, until two volunteers came forward.
The next day during sermon, an older couple stood and offered themselves as sacrifice, citing that as they never were able to bear children of their own, giving themselves so Aym and Baal could live would be the symbolic next best thing. And though Anthea repeatedly asked if they were certain, a week later the sacrifice went through. But ever since the lamb has had no interest in ever doing such a thing again.
Within the graveyard plot the Lamb set their own family's empty graves they placed two more for the couple, as their bodies were completely turned to ash and lost to the ritual.
Tumblr media
Day to Day
Within the Cult it's run more-so akin to a village rather than a proper 'Cult'. Everyone has a job to help the community as a whole, from farming, to carpentry, mining, med-bay, kitchen, tailor, and so on. There is a statue for prayer in the town center, but it's typically just people stopping by to say a quick prayer before moving on with their day, rather than sitting before it for hours praying.
Anthea has little interest in actually running the cult as a proper cult, and instead prefers to have everyone work towards building a proper community and settlement instead (hence why they don't like the idea of making people sit around praying-there's far more productive uses of their skills/time). Everyone there has lost it all-their homes, their families, their old lives-they have nowhere to go, and the lamb remembers how they felt when their own village was destroyed. They want the cult to be a safe harbor for people who need a new home.
That leading to greater faith wasn't entirely Anthea's intention, but it proved to be an excellent means of naturally raising faith/loyalty to them. People are less likely to dissent if they actually feel cared for, and to live in a cult that felt like a breath of fresh air? Where a new life could be found, a new family, a new home? Followers follow the lamb because they know Anthea's someone who genuinely wants to help them, and they are a lot more understanding and cooperative during hardships because of that as well. Where the Bishops lead by fear which can break loyaltys the second someone stronger appears, Anthea leads with their heart, which creates a following willing to stand beside them.
Sermons are held in the morning just after breakfast and are rather peaceful, and while outside of Sunday none are mandatory, most still attend daily regardless. Anthea's sermon scripts draw inspiration from their collection of Death tomes that predated Narinder's imprisonment (which depicted him as a gentle god of death and sleep), their own faith in Narinder that'd been built over years of praying to him prior to becoming a vessel, and some of their own memories of loss without letting on just how much they still grieve. (like everyone knows the Lamb is the last of their kind. But they just don't really realize how much that fact still haunts them. It's just assumed 'oh they lost everything but they're ok now! Look, they're trying to make things right!' which...isn't great but the followers do realize Anthea's carrying more grief than they let on eventually).
Sermon is still attended daily by choice as it is this time where followers can sit and reflect on those they've lost, but then be comforted by the thought that someone kind was there to greet their loved ones in the end. Death is framed as less of something to fear, and more of a final rest-which when every day is uncertain with the Bishops still in control, is reassuring. Anthea's voice is also just nice to listen to, during sermons their voice softens into this gentle tone followers can find comfort in.
During Sunday post-sermon Townhall (which townhall is why it's mandatory), followers are invited to stand and report issues, request materials, give errands for the Lamb to run in the other areas of the Old Faith, and the Lamb in turn makes sure everyone's updated on the situation outside the cult. Very few are allowed to leave the grounds unless accompanied by the Lamb or deemed capable (such as former Bishop Disciples who can fight/Missionary Talisman Holders that are magically protected) due to the danger that lies beyond the holy grounds from heretics and monsters, and thus Anthea likes to try and keep everyone from wondering too much about what's going on. Ignorance doesn't equal bliss, and thus the lamb prefers keeping them in the know as opposed to letting what-ifs fester.
And so Anthea keeps track of things they come across while crusading, such as currently standing villages being reported back alongside destroyed ones, the status of the various areas (such as Darkwood's difficulty rising post-Leshy's fall) being given, new locations reported (such as the path to Smuggler's Sanctuary opening where a hidden night market offers rarer goods like books, various alcohols, and other less easily acquired goods) and letters are also passed out or given to the Lamb for delivery. Though couriers cannot easily travel due to the dangers out there, Pilgrim's Passage does hold a sort of mail house within its village, where people can drop off letters and pick up their own, allowing people keep in touch with or even invite relatives to join the cult.
(I like to image that there's more settlements than just the Lamb's Cult, the Bishops Cults, and the in-game map locations. At some point I wanna put together a post expanding each area's extra elements/new ones)
Tumblr media
Sin Rites Alterations
After the crown informs the Lamb on the Sin Rites, Anthea is somewhat uncomfortable with much of their practices due to both its descriptions, and the various former Bishop Disciples reporting similar Rites as causing anything from violence, to havoc, to unrest, to just straight up chaos within their own cults when held. Sin Rites often cause followers to act in ways they typically would not by heightening, anger, lust, desire, or other things, and it doesn't really sit right with them to force that.
As such since Anthea prefers to maintain an order to their cult since that reinforces the follower's ease of mind/trust that they'll be safe, the rites are altered and broken down into their base sin elements so that the crown can still obtain sin, but without causing disorder/discomfort among the cultists.
(it also very much goes against Anthea's nature to do most of the rites, and would be out of character for them to even consider using them as-is, hence why I've modified them for Crimson Angel.)
🌸Spring Festival - Draws from Rite of Lust🌸
Sins: Pride, Lust
As a celebration of the coming of spring, the Spring Festival traditionally was seen as an event where people spent the day outside enjoying picnics in the nicer weather while watching the flowers blooming on trees.  Now, while it still is a day for that, drawing from the fertile elements of the Rite of Lust, garlands of flowers decorate the grounds and flower crowns are woven and worn by all cultists, with it becoming a bit of a trend to try and gift your crown to someone special by the end of the night as there now includes a festival dance after sunset. People dress in flowy embroidered robes to look their best as well. Throughout the night many who are of age try to confess to the person(s) they are interested in, and as the festival does line up with a lot of cultists mating seasons, it isn’t unheard of for followers to sneak off somewhere private. Anthea does however set a hard rule on that everyone is to remain decent while in public, and that anyone caught getting handsy where they shouldn't will be punished via assisting Nona in the kitchen for a week, which the threat of having to help the old lady in the kitchen scares most into behaving.
🌞Summer Solstice - Draws from Rite of Wrath🌞
Sins: Wrath, Envy, Pride
Originally only viewed as a celebration of the longest day of the year and marked via a bonfire celebration, the Summer Solstice now includes a series of games and competitions, ranging from foot-races, to archery matches, to knucklebones, to swordsmanship, and so on with other activities. Events are at first just single, but as time goes on are later divided into Kids, Teens, and Adults sections to ensure fairness. To those who win, ribbons are presented as prizes. (so think akin to school field day or the Olympics) The elements of Wrath are transformed into a more constructive competitiveness through the events, with hints of envy naturally occurring from those who lose a match. It is, however, all just for fun at the end of the day, with the ribbons simply being little pretty things to keep as opposed to anything too special. An unintentional side-effect also means that more cultists learn how to protect themselves in preparing for competing, permitting more the ability to take on errands outside the cult over time. (which, in-turn, eases Anthea's burden of being the primary person gathering supplies)
🍂Fall Festival - Draws from Gluttony of Cannibals🍂
Sins - Gluttony
Traditionally marking the ending of the harvest season, it has few alterations. During the day everyone works to can, dry, prep, and store the harvest gathered, with the best of each crop prepared for a huge feast held in the evening to celebrate everyone’s hard work. The only addition is teams of hunters are also sent out to hunt critters (which are considered separate from the typical sentient animals) and to catch fish to bring back for the carnivores and omnivores' winter stores, which as the years go on turn from just going out on the day of, to heading out a week beforehand to return with a larger haul to dry, salt, smoke, and store. Cannibalism, is however, EXTREAMLY PROHIBITED considering how they have a perfectly good harvest.
❄️Winter Solstice - Sinners' Pride❄️
Sins - Gluttony, Greed, Sloth
Traditionally marking the shortest day of the year, it is the only festival without any alterations due to the nature of the existing traditions lining up right. All cultists are given the day off from work, allowing everyone to trade gifts and spend the day with their families, to go out into the snow, and to see the stars and northern lights as a bonfire burns in the cult’s center, which for three days after there is still no work to allow everyone rest, as it’s also one of the coldest times of year.  Trees are often decorated with candles, ornaments, and other pretty things, wreaths are hung, mistletoe hidden in the worst places just to catch others off guard, people make baked goods, ect-so think Christmas but leaning more into its Pagan origins.
🎃Bonus! Blood Moon Festival🎃
Works like in-game and occurs during a Blood Moon. Spirits appear around the cult-grounds that need to be taken care of by disciples and the Lamb, with costumes bring worn by all to help in scaring the ghosts off. As children start to be born into the Cult, they also begin a tradition of going door to door for candy to keep the kiddos busy and away from the darker areas ghosts tend to lurk in, and there's a festival with various games like pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, darts, a bonfire, and spooky story-time with Mx. Shamura in the town square. So basically Halloween.
Tumblr media
Phew that was a lot of lore lol, but I wanted to also take the chance to explain how the Cult runs! A lot different from in-game, but again it just feels more in character for Anthea to run the cult as less than well, a cult, and more of a village.
Back when their own village was still around their family did play a huge role in it-their father Aries was the supply runner, with Anthea taking over his role once he died. That meant the lamb got used to speaking to the village leader and other elders in higher roles, so that's kinda what they're working off of. Had their village persisted, Anthea might've even joined the ranks of leadership in the village, at least in possibly training more supply runners and leading them on trips.
A thousand years plus of the Bishops rule which especially worsened post-Narinder's imprisonment also had a great deal of followers done with the traditional 'cult' life. The closest thing to typical 'cult' traditions is donning specific robes for rituals or everyone having something red on their person whether it be their main garment or an accessory, but even then the robes are because it's tradition (think wearing your Sunday best) and the red is more of a personal preference cultists have out of a desire to match their leader's cloak.

But I've been with Corax brainrot for the last couple of weeks and Idk if you could write something on the goth primarch + f!reader? In serious need of some inspo to start writing my own fics that come from those mind worms I've been having around Goth Big Bird. Smut, fluff, whatever is easier for you, I'm not here to inconvenience. If he isn't your forte either, feel free to ignore my curious ass and move on <3

Corvus corax/ F reader
Content warning for sexy times
Pretty thing
"my lord, I have completed the weapons acquisition form 32d as you requested, it's being processed now"
Corvus looked from his work towards the voice.
You stood just before his desk, soft swathes of raven guard black fitted your figure a little too well, showing every curve. He drank in your figure, from your boots, eyes following the slender outline of your waist, your breasts, slowly rising and falling asleep you breathed, his gaze lingered for a moment, before finally rising to your face.
Such a delicate little thing. He thought
"good, that saves me a job" he waved a large hand towards a data slate "there is a further request for a munitions drop"
"Of course, my lord" you walked around to the slate and reached out to take it. Your fingers brushed across the back of his hand as you gathered up the information.
Corvus felt his breath hitch in his throat at the touch and he felt his pulse quicken, you'd been here a matter of days and since then his focus has been lost to the wind.
Every time you entered his office, every step down the corridor, your voice as you directed serfs and servitors, all of it echoes deep inside him, waking something primal.
"my lord?". You asked softly
His dark eye met yours as a look of soft concern creased your face.
"Are you well? Forgive me, but you have seemed distracted, can I get you anything?"
You tentatively reached out, touching his hand deliberately this time, delicate, as if scared to break him.
Corvus felt his heart hammer in his chest.
This is ridiculous, I have faced soldiers, monster, heretics, so why...why is my heart pounding?
"my lord corax?" You had lent closer to him, you were so so close. He could smell your perfume, smell the drying ink and parchment on your hands, feel your breath on his skin
The world spun and you squeaked in surprise, suddenly finding yourself set on the desk, paperwork and slates pushed to the floor with a loud clatter. Your thighs spread across the cool wood, a large hand placed either side of your legs as you stared up at the dark eyes of your Primark. Eyes like obsidian started into yours, unblinking as his black hair tumbled around his shoulders.
A moment of silence settled between you, punctuated only by heavy breathing.
"Lord cor.."
Your words were silenced as he lurched forward and pressed his lips to yours, his hand grasping the back of your head, pulling you to him.
You sat stunned as he finally pulled back. He blinked at you, as if suddenly realising what he'd done.
"my apologies, I don't know what came over me" he muttered, moving to step away from the desk.
You clutched at his arm and pulled him back to you, a hand wrapping into his raven hair as you kissed him, he stiffened, before relaxing into the touch, returning your gentle touch with a firm grip on your thigh. You felt his tongue trace across your lip and you moaned softly as he deepened the kiss.
"I am distracted" he muttered as he moved his lips to your neck, peppering soft kisses and bites along your exposed skin. "You have been nothing but a distraction" his hand kneaded your thigh before moving upwards.
He looked at you, and you stared back, eyes heavy and you sucked in air. You nodded slightly, chest heaving and you moaned as his fingers found their mark.
"so wet already" he muttered , gently circling his fingers "you wanted this all along didn't you"
He pressed a finger inside you, slowly moving in and out, as you arched into him, begging for more.
He felt his own arousal growing as he fingered in and out of you, you were so warm, so wet. Desperate for his attention.
You moaned as he sped up slightly, head throw back you feel warmth rising in your stomach, before you finally peak, legs shaking slightly and blood flushing your cheeks.
Corvus hummed low, pulling his fingers back and bringing them to his lips, gazing down at you hungrily. You lay flat against the desk, your face a gentle pink and body trembling slightly.
He ran his tongue over his fingers as you watched, before reaching for you and pulling your dress off roughly over your head.
He stepped away and reached for his own trousers and shirt pulling them off and throwing them to the side and standing before the desk.
You hungrily eyes his figure, eyes trailing down his broad scared chest, down his stomach, finally resting on his dick, twitch slightly as he prowled back towards you.
"I'm going to take you, make you mine, every single thing I've wanted to do to you.." he trailed off, pulling you to the edge of the desk
He rubbed the tip of his cock against your wet core, slowing dragging it back and forth and smiled as you groaned.
He leant over you, Arms either side of your head and he stared you down hungrily.
"say you want it"
"wh..what?"
"tell me you want me to fuck you, tell me you want me to ruin you"
'my lord, please, I need you inside me" you whispered, breathless as you feel him rubbing up against you.
"say my name"
"corvus"
You gasped as he finally entered you, stretching you to your limit as he slid in, inch by inch. You clawed at his arms and shoulders as he finally bottomed out.
Corvus gently stroked your face, checking you were ok, before he began thrusting in and out of you.
You thought you were going mad, his dick filled you up as he fucked you, over and over. His calused hands holding your thighs up as he pounded into you to stop you from sliding across the desk.
Your cried out his name as you came, corvus fucking you through it and moaning as he felt you tighten around him.
"throne, you were made for me" he growls, his hips slapping into your thighs as he fucks you silly. He grasps a breast and squeezes, toying with your nipple and you cry out again.
"c..corvus!" You grapple onto him like your drowning, nails dragging furrows across his shoulders.
He picks you up, hands gripping your ass as he bounces you in his cock, grunting as he feels you shuddering and twitching, his thrusts becoming erratic as he edges closer.
You press your head into his chest, panting "please" you beg 'i want it... Inside"
Corvus couldn't take it
He growled as he came inside you, pumping into you as he finished, breath shuddering in his chest and he clutched you to him, his dick still twitching inside you as you gulped for air.
He held you for a moment, before pulling out and setting you back on his desk, he struggled to hide a proud smile as he looked at you, flushed and panting, his cum dripping from you as you struggled to sit up.
You smiled up at him sweetly and his heart skipped a beat again, he stepped around the desk and picked up his black cloak, draping it around your shoulders it almost swallowed you.
He ran a hand through his black silken hair and sighed, taking seat in front of you. A million thoughts ran through his head.
Was this a mistake? Was this fair, did you even want this?
He looked away and spoke softly
"you do not need to stay, if this is not something you desire, I do not wish to"
You reached out from under the midnight cloth and gently cupped his face, bringing his gaze to yours
"my lord" you said, the voice as sweet as honey "if it pleases you, I would like to stay by your side"
Corvus smiled gently and pulled into into a gentle embrace, pressing his lips to the crown of your head
"it would please me... But maybe we should clothe you, before going anywhere else"

🍭☀️A Cruelty Vivid and Sweet
Slow burn angsty Ominis x F!Reader [T-Rated, 8.7k words]
Tumblr media
"I can't lose him," he whispered, a shattering realisation. "Not like I lost Anne, and... and you." "You haven't lost me." "You are the one good thing in my life right now," he said, voice broken with rage and pain, "and we can't even talk in the hallway!" You leant against him then, shoulder to shoulder. And there it was, like clockwork. Strawberry laces. "Then let's be two normal people right now. Just... for a little while. Like before."
In which, with his relationship with you a secret, Ominis tries to pull his best friend from the brink of darkness.
Tropes: angst/ romance/ drama, slow burn, black cat x golden retriever, opposites attract, forbidden love, pure-blood culture, canon rewrite, book!canon compliant, Ominis meets the Sallow Twins, Forced Proximity, Denial of Feelings, duelling practice, the Relic Quest.
[MASTERLIST][FIRST][PREV][NEXT] [read on AO3, read on Wattpad]

3. A Secret Friendship
From then on, your friendship together was a secret.
Ominis' growing feelings even more so.
There was a forbidden agreement between you that, to save you, and to save himself, you wouldn't interact in the outer world. No cheerful waves in the hallways, no hanging off each other's arms between lessons. The only way to communicate was through notes, traded like secrets, a folded scrap of parchment slipping into his robe or your pocket. Ominis doubted Perry Malfoy and his cronies would bother to learn braille at his expense, after all, and this way you could keep in contact without breaking the façade.
Your grasp of it was clumsy though. In your impatience, you forgot words like the and a, your cadence was robotic and primitive, and one time you forgot the L in public, which made him snort so hard he got detention in History of Magic.
When notes weren't needed, or seemed too risky, there was the language of touch, even more heretical to his family's values, and even more seducing. Your elbow a gentle nudge to his side, in the hallways, on the front lawns, your pinkie brushing his in class, lightning through his skin. They were fleeting, these moments of connection between you, but no less potent.
No less desired by him.
Even though you were a social creature, most energised when you spent time with your friends, you took to this naturally. No matter how tedious, you lived for the notes, for the secrets you shared. Your mood improved drastically, he could sense it, freed of your previous burden.
He felt the same too. Lighter on his shoulders, his heart.
On days when the both of you felt the most daring, where the stars aligned for a culmination of your letters, you met him under the Astronomy deck, when everyone was away at the evening feast, to have a little feast of your own, an eclectic mix of sweets sent from your family and treats bought at Honeydukes. It often left Ominis feeling a little sick, but he never minded, not when it meant he could spend time with you. Sometimes Sebastian joined in – but mostly not, his attentions captivated by his search for a cure.
And, Ominis was starting to realise, by Missy.
"He fancies her sooooo much," you said to him one day.
Ominis reclined against the wood. Even wrapped in blankets by a lit brazier, hushing the cold, he wasn't comfortable – he never would be, not when this meeting was illicit, stolen from beneath the stars. But there was something about you that relaxed him enough to forget it all, even temporarily.
"Do you think it's requited?"
"Er, yeah. Those two are always flirting." You threw a popping candy into your mouth, and it crackled as you spoke. "And goodness, you should see the looks they give each other. Seb makes googly eyes every time she looks at him, and she makes googly eyes when he's not looking."
For once, Ominis was grateful he didn't know what googly eyes were.
"What's she like?" he asked, curious. "Missy?"
You waited a moment, fishing for the right words.
"Intense."
"Like Sebastian then."
"In a different way. Sebastian is hell-bent on finding a cure for Anne. He has one goal in mind. But Missy isn't driven by one thing alone... but I don't know what drives her. She's extremely good at everything she does, spells and history and theory, but she always seems... guarded."
"Naturally, you took that as a challenge."
You made a raspberry noise. "No! I just happened to stand next to her in Flying. She's the sort of person you want as your friend, not your enemy."
That alone troubled him. "And paired with Sebastian makes a dangerous cocktail."
"You think she's encouraging the Dark Arts?"
"I know she's encouraging the Dark Arts."
You didn't reply to that, as unsure as he was.
"She's not a bad person, but she's definitely... hiding something."
She had her secrets. He had his as well, but his didn't try to lead his best friend into the waiting arms of Dark magic. Into Unforgivable Curses and choices that could not be taken back.
Letting Sebastian embrace the darkness was an option Ominis didn't even think to entertain. He was family, after all. Like you were, like Anne. A steadfast companion through thick and thin, through his best days and his worst – and now, when Sebastian needed him most, Ominis would not turn away.
A choice made despite its painful consequences, he now realises.
He remembers the first time he met him, all those years ago. It was not, in fact, in the dungeons of the Slytherin common room, their beds next to each other in the dorms by fate, but earlier, when they were both eleven and the Malfoys hosted an expensive soirée to officially welcome the new incoming year into the magical world.
Ominis already had his new wand and was relying on it excessively, since he discovered with its power his senses were more acute to his surroundings. It pulsed intermittently, moulding the world around him to a language he could understand. The Malfoy Manor ballroom was lit by chandeliers, torches burning along the walls, and a hearth, twice his height, the heat from it alone enough to make the whole house swelter. The floor was polished, heels squeaking along its smooth surface, and scents interwove like tapestry, roast pork and lavender bouquets and a tangle of overwhelming perfumes. How vast it all was, how grand. He imagined this was what it was like to see, to drink in the sights greedily, the world beyond his fingertips fascinating.
Unfortunately, to everyone else, it was not as fascinating as he himself.
"Behave yourself tonight, Ominis," his mother hissed to him as she shucked her coat, dropping it with a whumph onto a tiny house-elf's waiting arms. His father hadn't been able to attend, so she had taken his place, just as callous and stern, caring as much about family connections and alliances as the rest of them did. "Make friends with the older students. They will be your guides. The Nott girls are two years your senior, for example, and one of the Lestrange children three."
"Isn't there anyone starting in my year?"
"A few." Her sneer was audible. "The Reyes have a daughter – Imelda. I've never liked her mother, so uptight and condescending. The McDowells as well, but there's a rumour her father was unfaithful, probably with some Mudblood. It's a shame. The Malfoys, Blacks, and Ellingboes all have their children starting next year."
For some reason that brought him relief. His mother didn't let go of his collar though, thrusting him in front of her society friends and their progeny, sometimes too young for Hogwarts, sometimes having already started. Questions arrowed his way were never about his personality, his likes or dislikes – always, they opened with his eyes and their murkiness and the sight he did not have. One boy even farted and asked Ominis whether he could already smell it, which earnt a cuffing from his father, and led Ominis' mother to pull him away in disgust.
"Ominis," his mother said at one point, dropping her forced, sycophantic pitch. "You remember Phineas Black? He's the current headmaster at Hogwarts."
Oh, Ominis remembered Phineas Black all right. His unpleasantness was legendary.
"You will behave, won't you, Gaunt?" Professor Black spoke down to Ominis, voice a dismissive rumble that said he'd soon forget this exchange ever happened. "Every year there's always someone making unnecessary paperwork for me. Last year a group of sixth-year Gryffindors thought it would be funny to jinx my quills to sing every time I wrote a letter. If it were up to me, I would've had them lashed for insolence."
"It's what they deserved," his mother agreed.
"Alas, capital punishment is rather frowned upon these days. I had to settle with detention instead. And scrubbing the entire Hall of Herodiana with a single toothbrush."
Staying silent, Ominis thought, was the wise move.
Soon his mother tired of brandishing him like a prized Puffskein, leaving him unattended at the buffet table to entertain her friends. Ominis was alone – lonely, when the sounds of laughter and music were suffocating from the inside. He clutched his wand, using it to navigate to the closest wall, where a cascade of belladonna draped over stone. How was he supposed to network? There were too many bodies, too much noise.
"You're Ominis Gaunt."
In the chaotic din of the ballroom, he hadn't heard the snooty boy come up. He tuned to the voice, scolding himself inwardly. Pay more attention. "Yes."
"I'm Peregrine Malfoy."
Well, at least finding the Malfoys had been easy. Ominis frowned. "You're nine."
"Nearly ten."
"You don't start Hogwarts for another year. What do you want?"
"My father says I should introduce myself." Peregrine barely gave himself enough time to pause for breath. "What's it like being blind?"
The question fatigued him. "It's like being blind," he snapped, unable to help himself.
"That's not an answer."
"I can't give you an answer since I don't know what it's like being not."
"If you can't see, how are you going to do schoolwork?"
He thought about telling him about braille, but he was smart enough to know that Peregrine didn't actually want answers. He just wanted to prod where he didn't belong.
When Ominis didn't say anything, however, Peregrine took it as a sign of composed aloofness, and dragged him over to his own clique of friends. It was an overwhelming few moments, shaking hands, first names flying into one ear and out the other, the only one he recognised being Dorothy Ellingboe – his cousin once-removed. He barely knew her, the Ellingboes being an old wizarding family that originated in Norway that extended a branch into England to strengthen the line. Yet Dorothy was a sneering, simpering girl that thought herself better than everyone else, ugly in temperament as well as voice.
"So you're blind?" asked the Fawley boy. "Why can't you just use a spell to make yourself unblind?"
He resisted the urge to sigh. He'd done this rigmarole a thousand times before.
"It doesn't exist."
"Bet it does. You just need to think about the Latin. Vide means see. Have you tried doing that?"
Never, because his parents had already done it.
"Maybe," the boy continued, "you could take a potion. The powdered root of asphodel, for example—"
"Quiet, Hector," Peregrine muttered, facing the door. "Look who's just come in!"
"No way," said Dorothy, sniggering. "I'm surprised they could afford the Floo Powder to London!"
"They look like they've just climbed out of a fireplace, all right," said the Black boy, Ominis didn't remember his name – some pompous star, no doubt. "Like those peasant Muggle chimney sweeps."
"Who is it?" Ominis asked, feeling stupid and left out.
"It's the Stone-Broke Sallow Twins," said Peregrine. "Look at what they're wearing!"
Ominis couldn't see, but he could guess – plainly adorned breeches, or a threadbare frock. He felt the shift in the room as they entered with their uncle Solomon. His mother had babbled about the Sallows once or twice – their parents had been Hogwarts professors who died in a freak accident – often accompanied with similar contempt, but she disdained almost all of pure-blood society, so who really knew what they'd done to invite so much ire.
"We should invite them over, shouldn't we?" asked Peregrine. "That's the courteous thing to do."
"Ugh, this again?" said Imelda Reyes, with an audible roll of her eyes. "Can't we just have one party where we don't butt heads with the Sallow twins?"
"You're one to talk, Imelda," Hector muttered. "Butting heads is all you do every day."
"Only because you make it easy."
"Don't be a spoilsport," Peregrine jeered at her. "Honestly, you're just as bad as Kaydence Lestrange. If you're going to ruin the fun, run along to your parents and be dull with them."
Imelda made a noise like she was going to beat him, physically throw a punch, but instead stormed off.
"Oi, Sebastian, Anne!" With no one to stop him, and Ominis a quiet observer, Peregrine called out across the ballroom. "Come over here!"
Even with this supposed history between them, Sebastian and Anne came over. The tension ratcheted up.
"What do you want, Perry?" muttered Sebastian.
"Peregrine," the boy snapped. "I wanted to introduce you, because it's polite – not that you would know politeness. You remember Hector Fawley, Antares Black and Dorothy Ellingboe, and meet my new friend, Ominis Gaunt."
Friend? Hardly. Ominis had half a mind to run off with Imelda Reyes, and fought to keep a shudder off his face.
"So, who did you bribe?" asked Dorothy.
"What?" said Sebastian.
"To get in, of course," she said, like she was asking about the weather. "No way Edwin Malfoy invited you."
"He invited us," Sebastian said through gritted teeth, "because we're starting Hogwarts next year."
Hmm. Ominis' mother had failed to mention that.
"Can you even afford a wand?" Antares laughed.
"Yes." A soft whip noise as he withdrew it. "Would you like to see how it works?"
"Sebastian," Anne cautioned, grasping his sleeve.
Antares wasn't deterred. "Oh, please. I doubt you know a single spell."
Peregrine laughed then, laced with taunting. "Even if he did, I wouldn't worry, Antares. It's not like that wand chose him. It's probably a hand-me-down from his dead, mud-loving parents."
Ominis was suddenly knocked to the ground, wand scattered out of his grip. There was a struggle above, and Anne's voice rose above the boys' grunts.
"Leave it!" she demanded. "For goodness sake, Sebastian!"
Sebastian shook her off, but the fury was there. "Say one more word—"
"You'll what?" spurred Peregrine. "Cry about being a sad orphan?"
"Boys," came a thundering voice. This one Ominis recognised – Edwin Malfoy. "What's going on?"
The scuffling stopped at once. There were two wide steps back, echoing in the sudden quiet of the ballroom.
"Just some light banter, Father," Peregrine said immediately, still and cool. "Nothing to be concerned about."
Sebastian hastily cleared his throat. He knew the boundaries, too.
"Nothing at all, sir."
Edwin made a noise of disbelieving. "Play nice, Peregrine. You'll all be going to school together soon enough."
But when he left, and Peregrine did too, Hector, Antares and Dorothy dogging his heels, it was with a loud snigger, one that promised that this altercation wasn't the last. Ominis wasn't sure whether anyone even noticed him, left on the ground, panicking as his wand was nowhere close. He palmed the floor in frenzy, terrified someone would tread on his hands.
"Here." Anne tapped his arm, then looped hers with his. "Let me help you up."
He stood. "My wand—"
"It's here." Sebastian pressed it into Ominis' shoulder, and he took it, grateful. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to push you over."
He was pretty sure it was Peregrine's elbow that went wide, since he was standing right next to him, but an apology of any kind was novel.
"Are you hurt?" asked Anne.
"Just my ego," said Ominis, which made her laugh.
"Ominis Gaunt, right?" Sebastian contemplated a moment. "So you really are blind— ow! Anne!"
"Don't be so rude!" she snapped. "He already knows!"
He did, but he couldn't help but grin anyway.
"You don't like Peregrine Malfoy?"
"Don't like?" Sebastian crowed. "I'd rather lick the underside of a Graphorn's arse than—" He seemed to remember himself. "I-I mean, you know, he can be, er, difficult—"
"It's all right," said Ominis, grinning. "I bet a Graphorn's bottom spews a lot less manure."
Sebastian let out a hysterical bark. Even Anne giggled.
"Thank goodness. We thought we were the only ones who didn't like him. He's so pretentious."
"Hector, Antares and Dorothy can shove it too," said Sebastian. "Mean gits with bad manners. They're all the same. And we're the twins here!"
Ominis tried to picture them, identical, but all he could imagine was their voices, how they inflected the same, laughed the same, spoke in the same accents.
"Dorothy is my cousin, actually."
"What?" said Sebastian.
"Oh, no," said Anne quickly, "h-he didn't mean—"
"And she's horrible."
This time they all laughed.
"I don't understand though. Why don't they like you?"
"Because we don't have money," Anne said, harrumphing as she did. "Because we live in a hamlet and not a fancy house, like this one. Stone-Broke."
"And don't forget Mama and Papa," Sebastian added. "They didn't care about blood or whatever, and taught everyone at Hogwarts when they were professors."
"Like they could turn away the Muggle-borns!"
Aunt Noctua, then, wasn't the only pure-blood to have such radical opinions. He may not have totally agreed, not when he'd yet to meet a Muggle-born, yet to have these notions proven, but it made him like these two, this odd pair the society kids disdained, all that much more.
He stayed with them for the rest of the party. The pair were hoping to follow their parents into Slytherin, same as Ominis; Sebastian liked Aurors and fighting magic, whereas Anne was eclectic, her interests broad yet undefined. Both of them shared an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and eventually even Anne caved to asking about Ominis' condition: how the wand helped him, how he sensed the world. This time he didn't mind their questions. They treated him like a person, not a pet.
When the party was over, Sebastian and Anne promised to wait for him when he arrived at Hogsmeade Station on the first of September. They promised to see their first few months together, as a team. Ominis left the party feeling lighter than he had all summer.
"The Sallows?" A hum escaped his mother's lips when he told her of his new friends. "They're poor. No money to their name, and their parents were happy to educate the Mudbloods at school. Still, they're dead now, and I'm loath to admit they both come from good breeding..."
That had been good enough.
And indeed, Sebastian and Anne had been waiting on the first of September, as they said they would, on the platform. They'd walked into the Great Hall with arms linked, taking in the new sights, smells and sounds, and rejoiced when they were Sorted into Slytherin together. Anne had sought to make her own friends and establish herself independently, free from Sebastian's influence – the last thing she wanted was to live in her boisterous brother's shadow for her entire Hogwarts tenure – but always she came back to him and Ominis. They hung about in the Undercroft, playing Gobstones, testing new jinxes, enjoying their newfound freedom and space.
Eventually she grew fond of you too, like he had. When your schedules worked, you were a tenacious quartet, three pure-blood Slytherins and one, odd little Muggle-born Hufflepuff.
Once you were all best friends. You were family.
Now the darkness threatened to ruin everything.
When the Astronomy deck was occupied, Ominis invited you to the Undercroft. It was dismal there – a reason you didn't enjoy it as much as anywhere else in the castle. Not a reason he understood, of course, but he never pretended to comprehend your particulars, nor your need for natural light. Nonetheless, you agreed on occasion. It was private, it was his, and it was safe.
Until it was no longer any of those things.
He headed down the lift to meet you, excitement brimming in his bones. December had long since arrived, and the chill along with it, weeping from the underground walls. He'd come earlier than planned, prepared to make the place as welcoming as possible. Lit torches, pillows and blankets, sweets, whatever it took.
But as the lift clunked to a stop, a female voice drifted down the hallway.
And it wasn't yours.
"Don't you think you should tell him?"
"What? About our frolicking around for the triptych?"
"It's not funny, Sebastian," Missy scolded. "You can't keep the relic a secret. It's thanks to him that you have this spellbook in the first place."
Ominis' excitement vanished, replaced with the emptiness that came after a string of broken promises.
"I know that," Sebastian admitted, "but if it works, then he'll see we have nothing to worry about. If the relic really can reverse Anne's curse, he'll see that nothing was in vain."
"He'll find out one way or another."
"It won't be from me." There was a hopeful inflection to him. "And... from you?"
She sighed. "I... suppose not."
"I promise," he said, so believing of own delusions, "it's for his own good."
Ominis threw up the gate then.
"I'll decide what's for my own good."
He sensed it then, the small things. A sharp intake of breath. Sebastian's fingers on crinkled paper – his feet moving to block the book.
"You lied to me," Ominis said, thrusting his wand at his friend. "You swore—"
"I actually said I understood—"
"Don't be deliberately obtuse. You knew exactly what you were implying."
"Ominis, please, see reason." Sebastian was calm, which was even more infuriating. "I love Anne, more than the world. Wouldn't you do anything for someone you loved?"
"You're arguing a pointless moral question."
"Am I? You have Gibby, after all."
It was like stone in his gullet.
"Don't you dare compare our situations."
"Why? It's no different."
"I'm not resorting to Dark Magic to talk to her!"
"But you are half in love with her. You're willing to risk being a blood traitor to your family for her."
Hearing him say it out loud was unfathomable.
"I— I'm not—" he stammered. "This is besides the point—"
"It isn't." He pushed past Ominis, spellbook in hand. "We're both willing to do whatever it takes. You do it your way. This," he said, "is mine."
Sebastian had gone through the gate when Ominis yelled, "Your obsession will cost you!"
His friend didn't reply. Soon the lift ascended the shaft, and Sebastian was gone.
Missy stepped forwards. "Ominis—"
"No, you don't get a say!" he barked. "You shouldn't even be here. This is my place. I didn't invite you. Sebastian shouldn't have brought you here!"
"He— he thought you'd be okay with it," she said quietly. "I would've found this place eventually."
"How? Only the Gaunts know of it!"
She didn't answer. Typical.
"I know you've been encouraging this— this madness—"
"I want to help him," she insisted, "but I'm trying to rein him in. I promise."
"Your promises mean nothing to me."
The gate opened then. In you ambled, jovial and beatific.
"Hello!" you piped. "I passed Sebastian on the way here, but he— Missy? What are you—?"
"She was just leaving," Ominis said.
Missy hesitated – a second, two. There was more she wanted to say.
Then, "Yes. I'm sorry to disturb you both."
When she left, you pattered over, joy diminished.
"Something happened, didn't it?"
He blew breath from his teeth. "Something always happens."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Frankly, all he wanted to do was scream, but telling you would do for now, though he was careful to leave out the being in love with you part. The way Sebastian threw it out there so casually... it unsettled him that these secret feelings he'd been trying to quash were so conspicuous. Sebastian was reckless and willing to do anything – would that include divulging Ominis' darkest secret? Did he have to fear the power his friend had over him now, too?
By the time he was done, both of you were leaning against the pillars, your legs tucked against your chest, his anger decaying to a low ache.
"But he doesn't know where the relic is?"
"It's only a matter of time." Ominis was certain of it.
You hummed. "I didn't realise how bad it was. Poor Anne..."
Anne, the victim in this, had her voice filched by her brother a long time ago.
"I'll write to her tonight," you said. "Sebastian has always been too headstrong for his own good."
"I can't lose him," he whispered, a shattering realisation. "Not like I lost Anne, and... and you."
"You haven't lost me."
"You are the one good thing in my life right now," he said, voice broken with rage and pain, "and we can't even talk in the hallway!"
You leant against him then, shoulder to shoulder. And there it was, like clockwork.
Strawberry laces.
"Then let's be two normal people right now. Just... for a little while. Like before."
Before. The nostalgia was painful. He missed those simpler times, when it was you, him, Sebastian and Anne, parading around Hogwarts without a care in the world.
Now Anne was cursed.
Now Sebastian was obsessed.
Now you had become a dirty secret.
And he clung to you, begging fate not to steal you too.
He smiles now, a memory coming back to him fondly. A memory of first year, after Christmas lapsed and the snow and ice were finally retreating from the grass. Exams were looming on the horizon.
And you were doing terribly in Defence Against the Dark Arts.
Though you were Muggle-born and humbling to the magical world, though you knew your grades were poor enough to raise concern, you swaggered into the Clocktower Courtyard that afternoon like an untouchable knight.
"Someone's confident," said Anne. She, and Ominis and Sebastian, had been waiting for you.
"Always," you trilled. "I may be the worst duellist in Hufflepuff—"
"Try the whole year," muttered Sebastian.
"— but I have the most fun, so who's really winning?"
Ominis snorted. You swatted his arm lightly.
"You're going to fail the class if you don't get better at duelling, so," a little teasing fluttered through Anne's declaration, "we're going to be your new teachers."
"You may only address me as Professor Sallow from now on," said Sebastian airily. He paced, drawing Ominis' ear across the courtyard. "And I don't plan on going easy on you."
Your bravado vanished "Do we really have to do this? Have you all fight me at the same time?"
"Diamonds are made under pressure, aren't they?"
"I don't want to be a diamond. A nice, sturdy rock would do."
"You sound scared, Gibby."
"Of course I am! It's three against one!"
"All you have to do is protect yourself," said Anne. She stepped backwards six paces, and Ominis copied. "A simple Protego spell. Okay?"
"If I say not okay, will you leave me be?"
"Stupefy!" Sebastian cried.
"EEEEEK!" Instead of blocking, you pitched to the ground as the spell hissed on stone behind you. "Hey! I-I wasn't ready!"
"Sometimes you won't be ready!" Sebastian said darkly. Then, "Come on, Ominis. Help me."
He wasn't certain attacking you this way was the best way to learn, but, well, there was something about diamonds and pressure. Hogwarts was a safe haven, protected by enchantments more powerful than a dynasty, more ancient than a family tree, but the outside world wasn't so kind. It was cruel. He wanted you to prepare, because Sebastian was right: one day you might not get the chance.
He shifted his weight. "Impedimenta!"
You dodged that one, too.
"Ominis!"
"What?"
"You're being— mean!"
He threw up his hands in exasperation.
"Come on, Gibby! At least try!" Anne's boots scraped against stone. "Accio!"
You stumbled forwards. "Ack! P-Protego!"
"Crus Vacillare!"
A soft thud. You tripped over yourself.
"Too weak," Sebastian called. "You have to mean it."
"I-I am meaning it!" You stood. "I-It's just— hard!"
"How about we make it more interesting?" he suggested with a flinty smugness. "If you don't cast Protego successfully... we all get to eat your sweet stash."
Your gasp was unfiltered. "You wouldn't."
Ominis sighed. He would.
Sebastian danced on the balls of his feet. "Again!"
Anne's voice was clear. "Aqua Eructo!"
"P-Protego!"
Water gushed forwards, but judging by only the slight squeal you let out, your charm had been slightly successful.
"That's more like it!" Sebastian yelled. "Again! Impedimenta!"
"Prote— ah!" You were laughing suddenly. "Look! I'm sooooo slooooow."
"Gibby!" Anne cried. "Do you want us to eat your year's supply of Fizzing Whizbees?"
"And all your toffee nougat?" added Sebastian.
"And," Ominis smiled, "your strawberry laces?"
"Okay, okay! I swear I am trying." You inhaled deeply. "Give me the one-two, Ominis!"
He wouldn't attack you very hard. Despite everything, he couldn't bring himself to.
"Levioso!"
"Protego!"
Zing. The spell lanced off the shield.
"Ah!" you cried. "I-I did it!"
Anne came closer. "Only because Ominis is holding back," she sang.
"He's not!" A pause. "... Are you?"
Ominis grimaced, which made Sebastian snigger.
"Boo!" you pouted. "I-I could defeat you, for real!"
He sincerely doubted that. His family had been instilling duelling technique and practice since he got his wand, in first year. It was imperative, they believed, that Ominis learn to defend himself, use his magic to the fullest potential, to prevent their 'enemies' from taking advantage. Their words. It was why he knew Crucio so early into his education, why he knew too much about Dark Magic. He suspected there was more to it – that they feared, because he was blind, he was more susceptible to defeat. Still, he liked to think he'd done well to keep up.
But he was nonchalant with you, not wanting to pop the balloon of your confidence. "Are you challenging me to a duel?"
"Yeah, I am! Let's do this!"
He swung around to create space between you, amused – but if it helped to improve your grade, he was glad.
"Two Sickles says Ominis ends up on his arse," Anne muttered.
Sebastian let out a single, hysterical laugh. "I'll happily take that bet."
"Thanks, Anne," muttered Ominis.
"Thanks, Anne!" you chirruped.
She was right though. For someone who'd only just learnt Protego, your ego was inflated. He had been holding back because he didn't want to injure you, nor your pride, but there was a fine line between that and arrogance. He raised his wand in your direction, preparing a list of spells to use.
"Duellists, bow!" Sebastian called.
He dipped his head. Presumably you dipped yours.
"Ready?" Anne called. "And... go!"
"Impedimenta!"
"Pro— eeek!" You rolled out of the way. "Wait— let me think— Stupefy!"
The spell skimmed his ear. Well. That was unexpected.
"Accio!"
"Protego!"
A great block. You squealed delightedly.
"That's it, Gibby!" yelled Anne.
"Flatten her, Ominis!" yelled Sebastian.
Ominis scoffed. "Impedimenta!"
You parried the blow again, retaliating with your own. He was starting to enjoy the competition, the fierceness of your pushback. You traded blow for blow with him, soon finding a rhythm that worked for you.
Sweat was collecting on his brow. "Diffindo!"
You cried out then, a wild howl, and crumpled to the ground.
"Nice!" called Sebastian.
Ominis smiled.
"Gibby?"
You didn't respond. You didn't move.
Horror washed over him – he hadn't meant to hit you so hard... he only wanted to graze!
Panicking, he ran over, robes fluttering. "I— I'm so sorry—"
"Flipendo!"
Suddenly he was gyrating through the air, spinning and helpless—
"Arresto Momentum!"
Anne's spell prevented him from smacking his head. Instead, he plonked to the ground, unharmed. Then you were standing above him, clapping, jumping with joy.
"Hahah, you fell for my trick! You did!"
He grunted, sore. "It was... clever."
A mistake. You let it fuel your slightly maniacal laugh.
"I am undefeatable! Unstoppable! Un... Un-attackable!"
"That's not a word." Still he filled with pride and got to his feet. "Well done."
"Yeah, good show, Gibby. Now you won't fail DADA miserably," said Anne. Then she coughed. "Looks like someone owes me two Sickles."
Sebastian grumbled and placed the tinkling coins in her hand.
"I have you all to thank," you said, humbler now. "I will carry these lessons forever, Professor Sallow, Professor Sallow... and Professor Gaunt."
But that wasn't end of them. From then, Ominis didn't underestimate you. He duelled you again and again, testing you, noting your mistakes, but he'd learnt from his own – not to fall for your trickery again. For any trickery. It gave him a sense of peace to know, should the time come, you could hold your own now.
A time, Ominis anticipated, that would come sooner rather than later.
"Where are you going?"
His and Sebastian's clashing ideas had been left unspoken, like shattered glass left on the ground between them, neither willing to pick up the pieces.
"I don't like the accusation in your tone, Ominis," said his friend, shunting another article of clothing into a bag. Their dorm was empty, a rare moment for a Friday morning. "I'm just going to visit Anne for the weekend. That's all."
But Ominis wasn't stupid – he heard the clinking of glass, the sharp, clinical scent of dittany. Who packed Wiggenweld Potion for a weekend home? It honed his suspicions immediately.
"I see," he said at last. "When do you plan to go?"
"Tomorrow morning, after breakfast."
"May I come along? I haven't seen Anne in a while."
But Sebastian was hesitant. "I'm sorry. I just... don't think it's a good idea."
Ominis relented. For now. When he left the dorm, he summoned the house owl with a click of his fingers. For once, he didn't give a damn if he got caught – this was something too worrying to go through the discreet channels with you. He had the Quick-Quotes Quill scribble the note.
Wooden Bridge, 6pm. Urgent.
At six o'clock, during the feast, he was there, waiting, leaning against the crooked panelling and let the biting wind chop across his hair and face. The air was parched today, snow impending but hesitant to fall. Even stacked in layers, a chill ran through him.
He heard the tell-tale clop of your boots, hurrying to meet him. Your breaths came out in shuddering pants.
"What's wrong?" you asked at once. In public, yet you didn't care, coming right up to him, halting a hand's reach away. "Are you hurt?"
"No," he said. "I'm sorry to call you out here, but it's Sebastian."
"Is he hurt?"
"I think he's about to do something stupid," he murmured. "And reckless."
You sighed. "I would have so many Galleons if I bet on him doing something stupid and reckless."
A fair point, but it was especially poignant now. After the argument, the feeling of trust in his friend had eroded. Now that trust was pocked with holes, and those holes were quickly filling with suspicion.
"Have you seen Missy?"
"Today? We did some homework during our morning free period. I asked her if she wanted to finish it tonight, but she said she was going to pack for Irondale. She's going there for the weekend – some catacombs, I think, to pay respects."
Irondale wasn't far from Feldcroft.
It seemed to click for you at the same time.
"You don't think— the relic—"
"I do," muttered Ominis. "In fact, I have a feeling I know where they're going." His heart thundered. "You said she was leaving tomorrow?"
"Yep."
"Have you seen her since this morning?"
You hesitated. So that was a no. Sebastian hadn't been around since the morning either.
They've already left.
You stomped your foot. "Oh, sugar, honey, iced tea!"
"... What?"
"Sugar, honey— never mind, Muggle thing. What do we do?"
"We have to go after them. If they've had a break-through with the artefact, it could put them in grave danger."
"But if they left earlier today, they could be there by now!"
He struggled to think. "Then we fly."
"We— fly?"
"Do you have a better idea?"
"But, Ominis— I'm a terrible flier! Madam Kogawa has made me take first year classes every year!"
He wanted to reach for you, to imbue you with confidence. Flying was your weak point, he knew. You loved the sensation – not so much the control it required.
"It has to be you. I can't navigate." He didn't want to push you, but this time he insisted. The stakes were too great. "If we don't do this... Sebastian and Missy..."
"I know," you said, defeated. "Ugh, okay. Meet me at the end of the bridge. I'll get a school broom."
It took you little over ten minutes, to rush to the front lawns and snag a broom from the cupboards. He heard the one you chose guttering over the horizon, shakily hovering to a stop next to him. You took his sleeve.
"I really think this is a bad idea. What if— what if we crash?"
"We won't crash."
"What if you plummet off the side and I can't catch you?"
"I won't plummet."
"What if Ranrok's loyalists shoot us down?"
"They won't spot us."
"... You're suspiciously optimistic."
"I'm moderately realistic," he corrected. "We don't have time to waste."
"Okay." Your grip wavered, even as you guided him to the broom. "Hop on."
It was a sudden hesitation that gripped him then, stuffed cotton down his throat. Because he hadn't considered how, exactly, he would be travelling. That for this to work, he would have to share a broom with you, holding onto your waist for support.
He swallowed, though his mouth was dry, and settled over the broom shaft. Already you were close – too close for him to fathom, the scent of strawberry laces suppressing the billows of pine and lake waters that swept in from the south. His fingers hovered, mere centimetres away from your waist. Even the brush of your coat was enough to drive his mind to catatonia.
"Are you, erm," you said shyly, "are you going to hold on?"
"Y-yes," he choked out stupidly, "right."
He reached around, looping his arms around you, pulling you close. Your back fit neatly against his chest, your heat and warmth abolishing the cold, your head tucking beneath his chin, a swathe of your hair under his nose. Already he was nervous, already he gnawed with worry for Sebastian and Missy, and yet this was the moment he almost unravelled. You were his safety. You were the wind beneath him, buoyant and uplifting.
"Hold tight," you mumbled, voice a vibration through his own chest, which only made him even more delirious. "Three, two—"
You pushed with your legs, sending you both cracking into the air. Stomach yanking down to his legs, his grip cinched, and he cried out as you shot them upwards so fast he didn't get to take a breath. You were hitting max speed too quickly. Wind churned around his ears, sluiced along his toes – you might have yelled something that he couldn't understand.
You steadied the broom, levelling them with the horizon, but he didn't dare loosen his grip. Flying was terrifying, and magnificent, and it was twice as terrifying and magnificent with you.
"Merlin's beard, Gibby! Slow down!"
"S-Sorry!" you called, fear and exhilaration evident. "I'm going right. Brace yourself!"
You leant starboard, and he leant with you. Now that you were pulling on the shaft, the broom slowed to a decent pace, enough that he could hear the sky. The distant rush of train and trees, the snake of the river that ribboned through the valley, a humming thread. Wind, carding through his clothes. He rested his chin on you, and your hair curled against his face, each tendril like a cat's tail, flickering and restlessness.
A thought came to him, unbidden. What would it be like to kiss the top of your head? To draw the hair away from your neck, and place his lips there too? Desire burned through him, drunk on adrenaline and nerves, and he had to clench his jaw to dispel the feelings.
Now was not the time. In fact, there was no time when such thoughts were appropriate.
Yet they came to him nonetheless.
"W-We're going between Irondale and Feldcroft," he pushed out through gritted teeth, through his useless feelings. "South of the mountain peak!"
He feared landing with you even more than take-off, but by some miracle, you managed to shakily jettison them between a cluster of trees, on an even patch of grass. The ground came up hard though, and he took the brunt in his knees, crying out as he fell to the side, the handle tangled between his legs. You stumbled off the broom into a patch of honking daffodils.
"Ack— Gibby?"
"I'm okay!" you chanted, voice pilfered by the tooting flowers. "Just bruised my bum! You?"
"I bruised my everything."
"... Touché."
You came over, sliding the broom from beneath him and helping him to stand. The touch was innocent, and yet your hand in his, with the flight fresh in his mind, hyper-aware of the proximity of you, stoked his cheeks to flames and his heart to a marching drumbeat.
You let go almost instantly, but it was enough.
"Well," you said, "that wasn't so bad."
"We almost died," he muttered. "Twice."
"My lowest record yet, so be grateful. Are we close?"
He withdrew his wand, and the scenery fell into place in his mind. The evergreen honeysuckle, dotting the nearby dirt paths, wending through the uneven terrain of the countryside. A flash of hard, callous stone. A funny taste of smoke and ash, like an unpleasant bonfire. Strange. Nonetheless, you were close – very close, in fact, that he recognised the nearest stretch of fencing, leading towards the Feldcroft Catacombs.
"It's just south of here," he said. "Let's go."
When you reached the cave entrance, the great stone wall had been moved. Someone was already inside, and casting Revelio showed that it was not too late, that the footsteps before you were fresh. You propped the broom aside and went to go in, but he reached for you, held you for a moment – that stupid feeling stirred within him again.
"Wait. Let's— let's think. I don't think it's a good idea they see us."
"Why?"
Truthfully, he didn't know. Perhaps it was only to see what they were doing. Perhaps it was only so he could have you to himself, just a little longer.
"We ought to be cautious," he amended.
You gasped, suddenly excited. "Ominis Gaunt... are you suggesting a stealth mission?"
"Hardly," he retorted. "Let's just— keep our distance."
"Okay." But you were practically bouncing. "We have to catch up to them first. We'll need to be quick."
"Lead the way."
So you closed your hand in his, and led him inside.
The way was dark and cold, a bone-deep sort of eeriness. You cast Lumos, and he did too, to help you see. Together you ran across the dust-ridden earth, over bones and rat droppings and the splattered blood of spiders, pricking the air with a tangy note. You shuddered when a few of the babies crawled into view, but it seemed that Sebastian and Missy had cleared the larger ones out.
Still, you didn't let your fears daunt you. It was quite something to feel your determination, vibrating through your touch, the tremble that went through you as you held his hand to guide him. It gave him courage and might, especially when the quiet sank deeply into him, an omen of trouble to come.
Only at the heart of the catacomb did familiar snippets of voice quell the silence.
"They're close," he whispered to you.
You cast Disillusionment, and he quickly followed. Your boots steps were light, but still the ground crunched. It was enough to let them pursue, closer and closer, until the voices crystallised.
"The relic must be nearby," Sebastian was saying – the desperation in his voice was like nothing Ominis had ever heard before. "I can feel it."
Missy tsked. "Stay focused. I believe there's another chamber ahead – and we have yet to face any of the matriarchs."
"Bet they'll be thrilled when they find their friends dead."
They hurried ahead – you followed.
"Thank you," Sebastian said suddenly. You stopped, causing Ominis to bump into the back of you. "Thank you for doing this."
"It's nothing."
"Nothing? You're risking your life for me, and for Anne."
She didn't reply.
"Why?" he asked into the brazen silence, surprise tinting his voice. "Why are you helping me? I know you partway agree with Ominis, and you barely know Anne. You barely know me."
"Can I not help anyway?"
"No one wants for nothing."
Missy was quiet a moment.
"Perhaps. I'm not entirely altruistic."
"So?" he asked again. "What's your price?"
And she said, "Redemption," like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Redemption?" you muttered to Ominis, at the same time Sebastian said, "Redemption for what?"
But Missy simply scuffed a rock. "Come, we're nearly at the end."
Intense and guarded indeed. You crept forwards on light feet, and Ominis dogged your heel, unsure what to make of the conversation.
There wasn't time to dwell when the spiders descended, great hulking beasts that shook the ground, all the way through his feet. He felt you stiffen beneath your grip – the sight of them must've been terrifying.
"T-There's so many—"
Still, Sebastian and Missy had charged in, spilling enemy blood against the walls.
"S-Should we help them?" you asked.
Ominis hesitated. "No. Perhaps— perhaps it will deter them."
But of course it didn't. The spiders kept coming, vicious wave after vicious wave, and yet, Sebastian and Missy's resolve never puddled.
"Depulso!"
Missy sent the spider soaring. Unfortunately, it landed on its feet.
Right next to you.
Disillusionment wasn't strong enough so close. The creature heckled, then screeched, sucking up venom through its body, guttering, preparing to shoot—
"No, look out!" you yelled.
It spat venom and you shoved him, hard against the ground. The concealment broke, but the venom hissed against the rock face where his head had been.
"Sorry— it was going to hurt you—"
"No time." He got to his feet, helped you and readied his wand. "Ready?"
"Can't really say no." Then, loudly and brashly, "Confringo!"
The spell blasted the spider backwards. Despite your terrible fear of spiders and insects, you ran into the fray and zapped another off its perch above. Pride reared through him again. That duelling practice, all those years ago, had not been for nought.
"Gibby?" Sebastian yelled. Then, with even more shock, "Ominis?"
"Less talking, more blasting!" he said.
One by one, the spiders were felled. It seemed endless, the onslaught – when one died, three more would surface their way up to take its place. He worried for you, panicked nearly, but remembered to trust you to defend yourself. In fact, you all shielded one another, in tune like an orchestra, thrumming to each other's beat. Sebastian's Exploding charms gave you the opportunity to flee when you were overwhelmed. Missy froze the spiderlings to let Ominis deal with the mothers. Then there were moments he couldn't explain – moments where even magic didn't seem to be the answer. Explosions like lightning, striking down their shrieking enemies, the air charged with a sharp tang of it. Always it followed Missy like a storm cloud, she its wild epicentre.
"Ominis," she called, "watch out!"
The spider had been in front of him – he was certain of it. But suddenly it was not, and Missy was stomping down, crushing shell and bone beneath her boot. How, when it is twice the size of me?
He let the questions fester until the spiders were all dead. Hot breath escaped him in shallow bites, there was foreign blood splattered on his front, and his arm was sore from casting so much, so frantically – but he was alive, and so were you, and Sebastian and Missy.
"What..." Sebastian managed a long breath. "What the hell are you two doing here?"
It was the offence he took that boiled Ominis' blood.
"I could very well ask you the same thing," he snapped back, advancing on Sebastian. "You told me you were going to see Anne!"
Still, Sebastian did the unthinkable.
He turned away.
"I knew it. You are here for the relic!" Ominis yelled. "Don't you dare, Sebastian—"
"Or what?" Sebastian challenged, swinging back to face him. "Why are you so determined to stop me? To stop me from helping Anne?"
"Because you are losing yourself! Because the Dark Arts seem harmless until it is too late."
"Anne is in pain every damn day!"
"A Dark artefact will. Not. Work!" His wand hand shook. "It will not reverse the curse and it will require a sacrifice too steep to pay!"
"You haven't tried! You can't possibly know what will happen!" He laughed suddenly. "Your family is broken, Ominis. You don't understand what it's like for me to fight for mine."
He was enraged, but a new feeling came swooping in, extinguishing and final. Hurt.
"That... that is a low blow—"
"Wait," Missy said, perturbingly cool. "Let's not argue."
"Yes," you agreed at once. "We can compromise."
"And you?" Sebastian scoffed at you. "Are you going to stop me, even though you love Anne too? Are you going to side with Ominis because you always do?"
Your reply was injured. "T-There are no sides, Sebastian—"
"If you're going to stop me, then there are sides!" he bellowed. Ominis heard the wooden whip of his wand. "I'm taking that relic. So step aside."
Ominis gripped his wand tightly.
"I will not."
"Stop," snapped Missy, and this time, she was no longer composed. She was firm, commanding. "We're not fighting. That's absurd."
"Only one of us gets our way," Sebastian muttered. "Are you going to strike me, Ominis? Are you?"
"Sebastian, go stand over there. Cool off, for goodness sake." Suddenly someone hooked Ominis' arm – Missy, dragging him away. "You, with me. Gibby—"
But you were already heading towards Sebastian. Ominis hoped you were talking it out, telling him why it was a bad idea – he had to trust that you could convince him.
He yanked off Missy's grip. "You can't seriously think taking that relic—"
"I know it's risky," Missy hissed at him, "but Sebastian has made up his mind. There's no convincing him otherwise. I tried."
"Not hard enough!"
"He's relentless, Ominis. The only thing we can do now is to let it play out, and minimise the consequences."
It was so ridiculous he laughed. "What was it you said you sought? Redemption?" He flung the word back at her. "Tell me, how does encouraging Dark Magic redeem you?"
By the elongated pause, he'd cracked through her impervious armour.
"How did you—?" Then, he was met with cold steel. "My reasons are my own and not for you to know. I'm trying to take the middle path here, but you're both being impossible."
"I'm trying to stop him making a stupid mistake!"
"And are you willing to ruin your friendship over it?"
His next words rammed themselves back down his throat.
Because the answer was no. He wasn't.
"Ominis," and he hated how perfectly reasonable she sounded, "there will be no talking him out of this. He is beyond reasoning now. So you either step aside, or fight. Your choice."
He knew what it was like to steep in the Dark Arts. He understood its allure, its false promises. Yet even so, he couldn't possibly let these years slip through his fingers like sand. He couldn't possibly release all the joy and jokes, the laughter, the pranks and brotherly love shared between the two of them. Sebastian was an anchor in the perpetual raging sea of Ominis' life. Anne had already been taken from him too soon, and you were teetering close to the edge, risking so much with his family's hatred encroaching you.
If Ominis lost Sebastian, he lost everything.
"You—" Anguish tore him from within. "I... I will step aside."
"A wise choice."
"But I will not stop fighting for him. I won't."
She didn't reply. She merely called Sebastian over to the relic, which fell into her pocket for safe-keeping, and then they were leaving.
"For what it's worth," Sebastian said as he passed on the way out, voice broken with his own hurt, "I... I'm sorry we can't agree on this."
Ominis didn't respond.
They left.
He was alone with you.
There was nothing to say, nothing that could be said. He felt his chest breaking, fracturing into pieces, slowly but surely taking his resolve down until it was lying in dereliction before him. A lump that had swollen in his throat became painful.
Why? he wondered. Why does the darkness haunt me so?
You didn't have to say anything. You simply took his hands in yours, rubbed your thumb over his trembling knuckles.
And he fell into your arms, and cried.

————-
Your eyes scanned the room as you walked through the front door. It felt like everyone was here, all waiting anxiously for something good to happen. The book cases, furniture, floors, and railings were all lined with candles waiting to be used for the spell that hadn't begun yet.
Elena lay lifeless on the floor in the middle of the living room. Her was plump pink lips now a haunting shade of purple and blue. She had bags under her eyes like you'd never seen before. She looked like death, maybe worse than even. Damon was sat on the ground next to her, finger combing through her long brown hairs as the world around him remained dormant.
"Sorry it took so long, traffic was horrible on the way over." You excused yourself quietly, not caring to remember that it was early hours within the day. Practically no one was on the streets at this time, but no one had cared to remember or question you.
Caroline stood in the corner with Bonnie, helping her mix some awful smelling concoction that even you could smell from across the room. Bonnie turned towards your voice, eyes lightening as she saw you and Kai. She almost looked excited... or desperate... you couldn't tell which was more accurate.
"Hey, we were just waiting for you guys to get started. Bonnie hummed. Caroline stood behind her, eyes kind of glum and nervous. Her arms were crossed in that way and her lips pursed to form a straight line. Her eyebrows were furrowed in a way that said she didn't agree with anything going on but didn't want to say a word. It worried you, Caroline was never one to hold her tongue. In fact, it was near impossible. "We found the right spell to bring Elena back... but it's going to take a lot more energy than we had originally thought." Bonnie looked between both you and Kai.
"Oh the day has finally come!" Kai light up.
His smiled felt like salt in this still fresh wound. He sucked in a deep breath of air as your eyes narrowed at him for the sudden outburst. He breathed out as if he had just tasted the sweetest oxygen he were to ever know.
"What do you want." Damon spoke up from the ground. His eyes hadn't looked away from Elena's fragile figure, but he was paying attention. "We know you're going to want something so tell us how so we can work something out." Damon huffed.
Damon sounded defeated. He has little to lose if this meant Elena coming back. Kai smiled widely recognizing his power in this situation. He turned to looked at you and your mean glare, daring him to take advantage of the situation.
"Nothing." His eyes locked in with yours. "I'll help you guys out, simply from the kindness in my heart." He placed a hand on his chest to drive his point home.
"Did you have a stroke or something?" Bonnie asked, confused at the sight. Had had never done a kind thing in his life. At least not for free.
"Nope." He hummed, looking to Bonnie. "But i do have a point to prove."
You and Bonnie exchanged confused glances before she nods and turning to grab her grimoire  from the table. She held it out for kai to receive with a heavy sigh. The pages had the instructions, and ingredients for everything she needed to complete the spell. Kai flipped excitedly through the pages, as if this was his big break. He was finally getting to show you how good of a person he was and you wouldn't even be able to deny it.
"whoa whoa whoa" Kai spoke up after about 5 minutes of silently reading through everything he needed to. His look of excitement suddenly fell and now it was more of a concerned tension. "You have everything you need to complete this spell?"
"yes." Bonnie replied confidently. Caroline tensed at the declaration, but you ignored it.
"Even the human life you're planning on binding to hers?" Kai scoffed.
Your eyebrows furrowed as you watching Caroline take her bottom lip in between her teeth. Bonnie sucked in a breath, crossing her own arms before slowly nodding her head in your direction. Your eyebrows raised at the inclination of you being the life to be bonded to Elena. You didn't even know what that meant. Caroline looked defeated, and Damon continued to watch over Elena with distractions.
"You're joking right?" Kai asked, glancing to Caroline who couldn't even pretend to look okay with the revelation.
"I'm order for the spell to work we need to connect her to someone." Bonnie responded.
"So you chose to sacrifice Y/N?" Kai scoffed in disbelief.
"It's not a sacrifice. No one is dying." Bonnie shook her head. "However it is extremely risky."
"Risky? Connecting a human life to a vampire is like painting a big red target on their back." Kai huffed. "Not to mention that this is an extremely taxing spell, and they'd have to survive it first."
There was no response that Bonnie could give. You would first have to survive the spell, then everything else life gave to you in order to survive . Telling by most of everyone else's silences this was a plan already spoken about before you arrived. Caroline looked as if this was eating her up inside, and Damon wouldn't even look away from Elena. Much to everyone's surprise Kai was the only one brave enough to speak against the idea.
"We can't risk some random person being. connected to Elena." Bonnie tried to reason. Her eyes fell to you waiting for any sort of reaction.
She was right. Connecting Elena to a random person posed a challenges that you couldn't risks. Illnesses, violent crimes, and accidents, all determined whether Elena lived or died. At least with you it'd be like daily protection. Nobody would let anything happen to you. You lived a perfectly healthy lifestyle and nobody was ever after you. It was a good idea in theory.
"Just... don't make it hurt." You sighed, shrugging off your jacket. Kai turned his head to you fairly quickly with a look as if you had just betrayed him in the worst way.
   "No." He stated sternly.
"This is the stupidest solution to this predicament." He scoffed at you. "There's no telling what this will do to you. We could get the spell all wrong, and you could die. The weight of the spell might be too much for you and you could die. You-"
"Or we successfully link her and Elena together-" Bonnie interjected Kai's rants.
"And we still managed to fuck up and kill them both."
Even with all the risk, you couldn't even imagine trusting anyone else to take on this role. Elena's life was on the line. This had to be you.
Damon stood from beside Elena, turning to face the rest of you. He walked over between the 3 of you, putting a cheerful gleam on his face. It looked forced, and almost frightening before he sucked in a sharp breath.
"I have the perfect solution for all of our issues." He announced. All of you watched him curiously as he looked around for a second before  locking eyes with you. "Don't die." He slapped a hand on your shoulder. "And don't kill them." He placed his other hand on Kai's shoulder. "Risk evaded."
"Don't be stupid, Y/N. There's thousands of people in this town, we could easily find one-"
"And risk an innocent person dying because you were too scared to do the damn spell?" You scoffed.
"I've met the people in this town and none of them are exactly innocent." Kai grumbled.
"This. This is what I mean. You don't think about anyone else when it doesn't benefit you! You're selfish, and impulsive, and you can't see anything past your huge fucking ego. We have the witches, the life to link, and the spell we need to cast. This is my best friend and i'm not entrusting some random person off the street with her life." You spat out. Kai tensed at your tone and the cruel nature of your words. Bonnie and Caroline shared a concern look at your outburst but both decided it was best not to say anything in the moment.
"Why do you even care whose life we link?" Damon sighed towards Kai.
"I don't." Kai's face went cold. He shrugged, tearing his eyes away from yours before walking over to his spot in the ritual. "Just making sure you all thought this through. I don't need you blaming me when this goes south." He sounded annoyed, and detached. You rolled your eyes, dropping your jacket to the floor.
You felt bad seeing the way his eyes softened at the insults. His face hardened but something about the way he looked at you, it was easy to tell his feelings were hurt. He knew that you were going to help your friend regardless of what that meant, and he knew that everyone else knew too. It was like they were backing you in a corner and only he was truly fighting for you.
Once everyone had settled, and fully come to terms with the agreement, everything began. Bonnie had your drink from a silver chalice, a herbal concoction swimming in a mix of your blood and Elena's. It took your entire body strength not to wretch it back up, but you managed it down with a chaser of water Caroline provided.
You, Bonnie, and Kai held hands over Elena's lifeless body. There was an array of candles surrounding all of you with flames flickering as the energy rose in the room. Kai seemed nervous as the spell began, eyes closed but his thumb running circles over your knuckles. It was a small gesture but one that sent tingles through your body.
Once the spell began Caroline and Damon watched nervously. Caroline picking at her nails as Kai and Bonnie chanted in unison, Damons eyes trained on Elena's body, making sure to note any movements or changes to make sure the spell was going smoothly. Kai looked concentrated, voice stern and words being spoken so clearly that there was no mistakes on his end. He was completely zoned in which made you feel a bit more at ease with all the thoughts racing through your mind.
Your body felt like it was buzzing with energy, heavy, and overwhelmed. Your skin felt electric, and your mind was clear. The candles lit up around you burning so high the flames came up to your knees. There was a heat igniting in your veins and you felt the sweat beading along your exposed skin from the flames. The chanting from Bonnie and Kai echoed throughout your mind which now felt empty. You felt like sitting down but you couldn't even move your body. As the watched Caroline noticed a ditzy expression on your face. Your eyebrows furrowed as your head swayed back and forth. Your lips in a deep pouted, stained red and dry from the blood.
"are okay?" Caroline asked quietly, moving to stand closer behind you. Her concern was evident and caught Damons attention. His eyebrows furrowed, but he remained silent.
"She should start feeling some discomfort right around now. She'll be okay... but it's not going to feel good." Bonnie spoke, interrupting her chant to clear worry.
Damon continued to watch carefully, unimpressed with how much you seemed to be affected. He could see the consciousness fading from yours as you stood, leaning back as if the only thing holding you up were Kai and Bonnie. Your face was hauntingly pale, and just as lifeless as Elena's.
Your mouth opened to speak but no words could form. Your eyes began to water and you tried to speak but nothing but a nasty gurgling sound escaped. Damon took a step forward his nerves getting the best of him as you looked mere seconds away from fainting as tears began to stream down your face. Water began to ejected from your mouth in a steady flow, dribbling down your chin and wetting your clothes. The sound of your gasping and water hitting the floor caused to Kai to open his eyes. He didn't falter in the spell, just stood unaware of what to do. He watched in horror as you coughed up the water.
"Is this supposed to happen?" Damon asked his tough demeanor now fading away.
Soon the water began to feel thick. Warmer... more suffocating. Soon the tears in your eyes were turning red, and your coughs began to sound more like muffled screams as what appeared to be blood spattered along the floor. Even for Damon this seemed a bit grim. Kai stopped his chanting and left the magic doing to Bonnie as he dropped her hand. the balance of magic all shifted to Bonnie who seemed too invested to stop. Her nose began to drip its own red, but she couldn't stop.
"Stop the spell." Kai's voice was deep, and stern. His eyes went to Bonnie who had here eyes shut tightly focusing on concluding the spell even if she had to do it on her own.
"Bonnie!" Caroline spoke out, desperation bleeding in her tone.
Kai watched unsure of what he could do. Clearly Bonnie was determined to finish this spell with or without him. Even if he did managed to convince Bonnie to stop, there's no telling on if the blood expelling from your body would stop. There was a still chance of you not making it through this spell, but time was not on either of your sides. The only way he could break the hold Bonnie had on you without hurting her, and hopefully stopping all effects the spell had on you would to be take you very far away. Far enough away to where Bonnie's magic couldn't reach you.
"Bonnie you're killing her!" Kai shouted, but it didn't seem to get her attention.
"Dammit, Bonnie." Damon groaned, looking around to see what he could do to stop the spell. He couldn't figure something out like he thought he would so he began blowing out candles which automatically reignited by themselves.
Kai took in a deep breath, before looking to Damon with a cautious look in his eyes. Almost as if apologetic for what he was about to do. Kai swept you up, your body flopping over her shoulder, getting your blood all over his backside before taking off.
By the time you woke up Kai was long gone. Elena sat in wait, nervously, awaiting for your arrival. It was light outside, and Bonnie was sprawled out next to you her breathing light as she rested with you. Once Elena saw the fluttering of your eyelids she smiled. Her hands rushed to yours, carefully observing you to make sure you were solid before helpfully you sit up without waking Bonnie.
"Good-morning." She smiled brightly. "I was starting to get worried." You stared in disbelief for a second before leaning forwards, wrapping both arms around the brunette.
"So happy you're okay." You huffed out as Elena began to squeeze you back.
   "All thanks to you."
"So this means the spell worked?!" You pulled away as Elena hummed in confirmation. "We're really linked together now?"
"We are going to really be Best Friends for Life... we have no choice now." she giggled and you smiled, looking around the familiar room.
   "How long was it out?"
"3 days." Your eyes widened.
"It's feels like i was out for like 30 minutes."
"Trust me i know. For me i was only taking a quick nap but apparently i was out for over a week?" She responded and you sighed. "But we're both okay, and that's what matters."
"Have you been here the whole time?"
"Yeah, Me and Bonnie kept shifts for when you woke up." She nodded. "Kai has been coming in every morning so he should be here in a bit." She spoke with a light smirk on her face.
"Why is he coming?" You felt your skin getting hot at his mention.
"To check up on you..." Elena spoke softly. "He did save your life after all."
   "Kai?"
"mhm"
   "Malachi?"
"yes."
"Parker?"
"yup." Elena laughed. "He's been... dare i say... worried?"
  "Worried?"
"You must of had quite the effect on him while i was gone." She joked, but your face remained serious.
   "oh."
"Yeah, i should text him and tell him you're awake-"
"w-what? why would you do that?" You stammered.
"Just to give him a heads up." Elena shrugged. "That's okay right?" She asked and you swallowed the air bubble in your throat. "I mean he's been so helpful these past few days." she justified.
"oh yeah, right." you nodded trying not to seem too suspicious. "actually-" You used your hand to block her from typing on her phone. She glanced at you curiously as you thought of an excuse. "maybe i should text him. might be better coming from the source, you know?" You covered.
"Of course." Elena hummed. "no other reason?" she questioned and you shook your head quickly.
She was staring at you in that way she did when you both knew you were hiding something. You were never good at lying to Elena. You always joked that she was just another half of you the gods put here to keep you on track.
When Kai began showing up and spending hours watching you, go make sure you were still breathing she could tell something was up. He wouldn't say a word, just complain that he saved your life and he deserved a thank you with your first real breath when you woke up. He'd kiss the top of your head before he left when he thought no one was looking. Elena never said a word in efforts to not spoil the moment, but it was clear what was going through his mind.
"So you two aren't..?" Elena crossed her fingers watching you squirm.
"definitely not."
"So you never ..?" Her eyes widened as if you knew what she meant.
"uhhh no... we never-"
"oh you so have!" Her eyes widened at the confirmation. You gasped, turning to see if bonnie had been awake and slightly relaxing to her still unbothered in slumber.
"It was only once!" Elena narrowed her eyes. "Okay twice, but it meant nothing. It was just high stress times and that's all. And now that everything's over, and you're back, it's not going to happen again." You assured but Elena just rolled her eyes.
"You don't have to explain anything to me. I mean... i get it. He's hot." She laughed.
"You can NOT tell anyone."
"I won't! But..."
    "Elena!" you whined.
"I just think you should maybe go over to check on him!" She spoke in a defensive tone. "He's been over here everyday worried sick. You should at least tell him yourself that you're okay."
"I think a text should be fine."
"Come on, don't be like that. He saved your life. It's the least you could do." She gave you an expecting look before smiling as your shoulders fell in defeat.

By the time you arrived to Kai's apartment it felt like you had been driving for years. You're body felt heavy and your heart was pounding out of your chest.
You couldn't believe you allowed Elena to talk you into coming here. This was the last place you wanted to be. You thought that after Elena was back, you could go right back to ignoring the heretic and all that he was. Instead, you have to thank him for saving your life, and possibly entertain the idea of finishing a whole different conversation that was cut short the other night.
"Ye-"Kai opened the door after your solid 3 knocks. He had on black and white plaid pajama pants with no shirt. His apartment was dark inside and smelled of sandalwood and lavender. "You're awake." he spoke sternly at the sight of you.
"Can I come in?" You asked, watching as he slow blinked before moving to the side, allowing you access to the dark of his living room. There were streams of line peaking out from the blinds, but telling by the state of him and the shadows it was clear he had just rolled out of bed.
You turned to face the heretic who just stood quietly waiting for an explanation. Your eyes grazed over his uncovered upper half, mouth salivating at the sight with intrusive memories flooding your mind. You only came over to offer your gratitude and you dominated in doing that but something about him just seemed so intriguing.
"Elena said you saved my life." You spoke up, breaking the awkward silence.
"I do remember doing something like that, yes." He nodded, looking into the ceiling as if having a back flash about the memory.
"She also said that you came to see me everyday." you hummed and he shrugged.
"That is also true. I saved your life, i was just making sure i was the first person you thanked when you woke up." He huffed.
   "Really?" you blinked.
"Yup. So... get to it." he motioned with his fingers for you to hurry it along.
"I- uhm... Thank You. For saving my life. I owe you one."
"You owe me one?" He laughed. "I saved your life and you 'owe me one'?"
"What was i supposed to say?" You scoffed.
"I don't know, how about, 'gee Kai, i sure was wrong about you! You are one decent guy'!" He mimicked your voice. "You know you surround yourself with people who have equally as heinous things as i've done in my past but for some reason i'm the only one you give grief to." He ranted. "What makes me so different than Damon? Or Stefan? Or caroline? or-"
"Okay, okay, I got it!" Your eyes rolled.
"How can i prove that i'm not that person anymore?" He continued even at your annoyance.
"I can't even think about you without having flashbacks of what we've done. I can't think about that without thinking about how wrong it was. How much it's going to hurt Bonnie when she finds out that i'm sleeping with the person she hates most in the world. I want to trust you, and give you that chance kai but i can't do it with a clear conscious."
"Who said you have to?" Your eyebrows furrowed but his face remained the same.
"We can't. I can't."
"For fucks sake, Y/N, just be honest with yourself for one moment. You're not guilty about what we did. Or we wouldn't have done it twice. You're guilty because you enjoyed it. You think about it often, and it makes you feel good." he huffed, sick of the excuses. "You hate that i've changed, and if you gave me that chance then you wouldn't be able to make me the bad guy in your story again."
"Even if you were remotely right," you full noticed how to gap was slowly closing between the two of you. "It still couldn't happen again."
"Then leave." Kai stated, taking you back by his bluntness. "The door is right there." He nodded towards his front door, but making sure to continue closing in on you.
"I'm sorry." Your voice was meek.
"Once you leave we can drop this and pretend like we never happened. Just like you want." He stated, staring you down as if prey to a predator.
"like i want..." you mimicked, clearly a bit out of it as you focusing on the distance closing.
"Kiss for the road?"
You stood watching his hands reach for your body. One hand attached to your waist and the other on your neck, making sure he could hold you close enough. You resist for a second, placing a hand on his chest in a feeble attempt to keep him away, but gave up soon as he pressed your lips together.
The kiss was softer than the ones you two shared before. It was softer... more enticing... almost like he was begging you not to go in the most intimate form he could pursue. Your fingers resting on his chest, feeling the speeding heartbeat beneath his shirt. You couldn't tell how long your lips were together, but the second he pulled away you felt a nagging force to keeping going. Your eyes were trained on his lips, unable to think about much else other than the very thing you swore would never happen again.
It felt pathetic how badly you needed him. If you left now, it really would never happen again. If you continue to fight this you'd be longing for something you couldn't have and the thought drove you mad.
"I might be a total fucking hypocrite." You sighed to yourself, Kai smiled, taking it as a sign.
"Everyone is a hypocrite, don't beat yourself up about it." he hummed, taking them hymn of your shirt and pulling it above your head, tossing the fabric somewhere in the darkness. His hands went to the back of your thighs, swiftly sweeping up to straddle him as he carried you back to his bed room.
The scent of him was strong you couldn't think about much else but him. He laid you back on his bed carefully, falling to his knees in front of you, pulling off your jeans without a word. There was a silence lingering in the air that neither you felt the need to break. His hands spread your legs apart, lips connected carefully with your panties covering the immediate wetness that contracted the second the two of you kissed.
You sucked in a harsh breath, body on edge as Kai kissed around everywhere except exactly where you needed him. He used a finger to hook your panties to the side, allowing his lips to explore the flesh that awaited him. You hummed softly, eyes closed, allowing yourself to feels everything in the moment with no distractions. The only sounds in the air were you soft whines, and kai's ever so delicate kisses to your folds that seemed to be driving you crazy. He relished in your sultry noises and took his time, teasing and punishing for every moment he had to go without you in his bed.
His lips wrapping around your clit so slightly, sucking just to feel your thighs clench around his face. Your juices beginning to coat the lower half of his face, back arching off the bed as you let out the most sinful noises you could manage.
"Kai please" you cried out, not caring about the volume of your pleas.
Kai moaned, sending vibrations straight through you. He pulled away for only a second, yanking your panties down your legs, discarding them across the room. Kai sucked in a deep breath of you as his tongue connected once more with your clit drawing tiny circles as he felt your thighs tightening around his head as you allowed your orgasm to wash over you.
Kai watched as your chest heaved, back falling onto the bed allowing you to recuperate. He began kissing the delicate skin all the way up your torso. His tongue gliding over your nipples, your fingers getting lost in his hair as he took his time sucking you in. His teeth grazed over your skin leaving warm patches wherever he could to turn into bruises for you to find the next morning.
"Still hate me?" Kai hummed against your skin.
"You're such a dick." You smiled, pulling his face up to you, pressing a kiss to his lips, feeling his body weight relax over you. His body rested in between your legs, and you made sure to keep him closer as you wrapped your legs around him.
The kiss was harsh and passionate, different than every time before. Both of you hungry, needing to feel way closer than ever before. Your moans were whiny and desperate, your whole body aching for as much attention that he could give to you. Your hands shaking as you slipped the past the band of his pajamas pants. You cracked a smile finding that he wasn't wearing any. Your fingers wrapped around his length, slowly stroking his hardening length, almost whining at how big he felt even when he wasn't even all the way there.
"Gonna be a good girl and pull me out?" Kai mumbled against your lips.
You slowly moving his waistband down, pulling out his length, feeling his pressed against your folds. All you could think about was how warm he felt against your skin. His lips were pressing deeply into yours, rutted his hips against yours folds covering himself in your juices as you're hands traveled along his torso, studying every curve and indent along his skin.
His teeth hooked on to your bottom lip as your jaw fell open. He entered slowly, feeling your walls clamping down around him tighter than your u had before. He held himself up on one elbow as the other hands kept your leg pressed into his side. He pressed deep into you until he felt himself bottoming out in you. You felt every inch of him as your breathing synced up with his.
This time felt different than all the other times. You felt guilty because you enjoyed him so much before, but the thought of this being wrong wasn't even on your mind. His pace wasn't as brutal as before but you still felt amazing. His hips moving slowly pushing into you at a decent pace.
"God kai" you moaned, so desperately aching for another release you felt as though you were actually going to lose your mind. His cock dragging along your walls making it difficult to focus on much else.
His teeth scraped against your skin trying his best to leave a plethora of different marks for the world to see once he was done with you.
"Feel so tight, y/n." Kai moaned, letting go of your leg just to wrapped his fingers around your neck. You moaned bringing your hand to hold your leg, opening yourself up and allowing him to reach a deep depth of your insides. "such a good girl"
"Please" Your nails digging into your own skin "Harder" You pleaded.
It didn't take long for Kai to obliged. His fingers tighter around your neck, slamming his hips harder into yours than he had been. He sped up his thrusting, his hot panting breaths landing on your skin as your whines grew louder the closer to your orgasm you got.
"fuck kai" you cried out, feeling him slam against that spongy spot in your core over and over again.
Your eyelids fluttered as the sensations took over. You could barely register any of the nonsense you were babbling about as your hips began to buck back into his. Your back arching off the bed, your hand dropping your leg to move down to your clit circling furiously as your orgasm slowly rippling through you.
Kai's hips stuttered as he felt your walls convulsing around him. He watching as the wetness in your eyes forms into a single tear, dripping down the side of your face as you cried his name out in pleasure. He felt your cum coat his cock as he slowed his movements down.
"You're so pretty." He groaned, making sure to leave a trail of kisses along your jaws line.
"mm you're so pretty" You moaned, your mind still on the way his cock felt buried in you.
"Guess I taught you proper manners after all." He grinned, slowly removing himself from you causing a soft whine at the loss of contact.
"shut up." you smiled softly.
"there she is." He hummed. "and you were doing so good." He tutted, shaking his head. "I don't even get a thank you." You let out a soft 'hmph' watching brought himself up, stabilizing himself on both knees. His cock was still hard, standing on its own, with a bright red tip, glistening for your finish.
"You didn't..." you frowned slightly.
"Not yet... i'm not done with you." He hummed, placing his hand around your neck once again, squeezing tightly as he yanked you up. The movement practically made you cum again as he brought your face to his. "You know you're not done yet right?" He asked innocently and you nodded eyes wide and ready to please. "To think if you weren't so stubborn we could've been like this way sooner." He slowly shook his head. "I mean we're perfect for each other, don't you think?" You moaned as his hand squeezed tighter around your neck beginning to challenge your air way. "Speak."
"Yes" Your voice was desperate.
"Don't you think if I wasn't so persistent for you we wouldn't be here right now?" He tilted his head as if there was no wrong answer.
"K-kai-"
"Don't you think i deserve a Thank You at the very least?"
"Y-yes. Thank You." He brought his lips down to yours, connecting ever so softly for just a moment.
"Again."
"Thank you."
"Thank you for making me cum kai." He spoke in an octave higher, mocking your horned out state.
"Thank you for making me cum, Kai" You repeated, making him smile.
"Thank You for fucking me stupid, Kai."
"T-thank you for fucking me stupid." You felt your pussy beginning tingling as he continued rot ain't you, making you thank him for everything he did to you.
"Wanna show me how grateful you really are, princess?" He asked and you nodding the best you could with his hand still tightly wrapped around your flesh. "I still need to cum, pretty girl. Gonna help me out?"
He let go of your neck allowing you gaze to sift down to his cock, precum oozing from his tip. Your mouth began to water as you looked back up to him.
"Come on, baby." He placed his hand on the back of your head, slowly guiding you down until you were face to face with his cock.
The way his hands were placed on your head let you know you weren't going to be doing much besides acting as a vessel for his release. You were fine with that. How had a hand under your chin, and one on the top of your head. You used you still shaky hands to bring the tip to your lips.
The bitter saltiness of his precum dripping from him made him look even more appetizing.
"are you ready, princess?" He asked, his breaths deeper than before as your tongue teased the slit of his cock.
"Yes sir."
Your lips parted, allowing his hips to push himself into you slowly. You moaned on his cock sending sensitive vibrations through him making him shudder at the feel. He moved his hips slowly back and forth, reveling in the way his cock dragged along your tongue.
"Fuck y/n" He hung his head back as he continued.
His pace sped up as he chased down the orgasm that was just in his finger tips. Hour continuously felt his tip colliding with the back of your throat. Your eyes were tearing up as the lewd wet squelching sounds filled the space. His pants and groans as he used you mercilessly caused slicked your core all over again.
"Shit" He pulled out suddenly, one of his hands going to stroke himself as he slowly slipping off the edge "Where do you want it angel?" He moaned, You breathing was heavy as you slapped his hand away, putting your mouth back on his length, head moving quickly answering his question without words.
Your cheeks hollowed as you took him as far as you could allow yourself. Whatever you couldn't fit in your mouth you used your hands for. Soon his hips were jerking into your mouth, body tensing as he spilled his seed onto your tongue.
“God you’re so perfect.” He huffed, breathing heavily as he brought his hand back down to your throat pulling you back up to eleven with him.
You opened your mouth slightly, hanging out your tongue to show how you discarded of the warmth he provided. The smirk on his face grew, before bringing your lips together in another soft kiss.
“Let me take you on a date.” Kai spoke, listening to your labored breathing.
You were silent looking into his eyes. There wasn’t an ounce of humor in his tone. He was being serious. You were used to his jokes and sarcasm but his seriousness was something new to you.
“I just… i need time, Kai.”
“Well i don’t. I don’t want to take it slow, or warm everyone else up to the idea. We know what they’re going to say.”
“So you know it’s not that easy”
“Why’d you come here then?” His hand dropped for your throat.
“what?”
“You could’ve called, or waited for the next time that you saw me… but you came to me. Why?” You’re mouth opened to speak but there were no words to say. “You came here because you wanted to. You know what you want Y/N, so just accept it.” The look in his eyes almost felt
like he was pleading with you.
“I…”
“Y/N… please.”
You watched as a tear fell from his eye. You waited in shock, staring at the Heretic who clearly was putting all his card on the table. Naked and afraid of rejection. He felt like a kid again begging for the people he cared about lost to accept him for who he is.
“Yes…” You could barely hear your own voice. His eyebrows furrowed, leaning closer to you slightly to make sure he heard correctly.
“Y-yes?”
“I’ll go in a date with you…”

The heretic princess
I got this idea stuck in my head from the book ‘The Heretic Queen’ by my favourite historical fiction writer Michelle Moran. And don't worry, I've already written all the parts except for the last one, but I'll finish it up so I can post this weekly without delay.
Note: I’ve not explicitly referred to the setting because I don’t want to misrepresent anyone’s culture and offend anyone, even if unintentionally. However, this is set in ancient times where their views of childhood and marriage differed from most modern civilisations today.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Warnings: None ...? I don't think?
----------------------------------------------------------
“I bet I can make my stone skip more times than yours,” Kai challenges Miguel, tossing his stone up and down in his hand nonchalantly.
Miguel's lips purse in annoyance and he folds his arms across his chest. “You dare challenge your future king?!”
You laugh at Miguel's imposing tone and place a hand on his arm. “What are you going to do, Miguel, command your stone to skip more times than Kai's?”
Kai joins into your laughter and despite his best efforts, Miguel's lips curl into a smile at the look of delight on your features.
“What are you guys doing?” The three of you turn to follow the voice and find Dina picking her way carefully over the stones on the riverbank. You and Kai roll your eyes in disappointment and turn your attention back to your game.
“Nothing that would interest you,” Kai mumbles, his abrupt tone indicating his dislike of the girl. But Dina continues making her way towards the three of you, undeterred.
“Well, why don't we find out?” She lifts her head to smile at Miguel, but her expression melts into one of horror as she trips and starts falling forward. Miguel quickly leaps towards her, catching her before she can hit the ground.
“Are you all right?” he asks, letting her continue to hold onto him even after she'd already steadied herself. She meets his gaze and you huff as you notice Miguel’s eyes widen slightly at the dazzling smile she shoots him.
“No thanks to you, my Prince.”
Miguel clears his throat and takes a small step away from her, a slight blush crawling up the back of his neck.
“It was no problem, really,” he reassures her, his lips curling slightly at the ends as he sneaks a glance at her. You turn to Kai, arms folded across your chest in irritation.
“What is she doing here?!” you hiss, quietly enough so that Miguel doesn't hear. Kai sighs and shuffles closer to you.
“Apparently, the advisors want them to be married when he becomes co-regent,” he reveals softly. Your heart drops into your stomach at the suggestion. Miguel?! Marrying Dina?!
“Why?!” you whine, more upset than confused. Kai raises an eyebrow at how disturbed you seem by the idea. You calm yourself quickly, regaining your composure, but your eyebrows remain set in a hard line as you wait for his explanation.
“Well, her father is the chief Royal Advisor. Of course he would push for her to marry the next King,” he replies easily. You wrinkle your nose at his simple logic.
“But Dina would make a terrible queen!”
“She doesn't have to be queen though,” Kai points out quickly. “She just has to give Miguel heirs.”
You clutch your stomach as it roils at the very thought of Dina and Miguel having children together. Gross! You bend over, trying to fight the nausea overcoming you and finally, Miguel rushes back to your side.
“Y/N?! Are you all right?” He moves his hand in soothing circles across your back, wanting to make you feel better, but all it does is make you feel even more hot and uncomfortable.
You take a step away from him and your movements cause the confused look on his features to intensify.
“I-I'm all right,” you reassure him weakly. “Just a little hot.”
You pull back the collar of your dress and flap it as if to prove your point and Miguel relaxes a little.
“Would you like to go for a swim?” he suggests, gesturing to the shallow water beside you. You finally meet his gaze and your stomach curdles when you see the concern etched onto his features. You shake your head and Miguel exchanges a puzzled look with Kai.
“I think I'd rather just go inside and lie down,” you tell him.
“We'll walk you back,” Miguel offers, looping his arm through yours. Kai supports you on your other side and together, the three of you head back to the palace.
You stare into the mirror as your nursemaid combs oil through your hair. She would know about the rumours regarding your best friend's purported wedding - the servants were always in the know, silently disappearing into the furniture as the nobles spoke freely about their darkest secrets. “Meena?”
     “Hmm?”
You wring your hands together as you summon up the courage to ask her the question. “Are Miguel and Dina going to get married?”
Meena doesn't pause the movements of her fingers through your hair as she replies to your question. “Why would you ask that?”
You hesitate again, trying to figure out why it bothers you so. “I was just … Kai mentioned it today … and I wanted to know if it was true. Would he really marry Dina?”
You meet her gaze through the mirror, your eyes wide with horror and her lips curl ever so slightly at the ends.
“He might,” she admits coolly. “She has grown up in the palace, after all, and her father is the chief Royal Advisor.”
Your lip quivers at your nursemaid's implicit confirmation of the rumours. “But I have grown up in the palace too! And my mother was the sister of the last true Queen!”
“Hush, child!” Meena frowns at you in disapproval and moves around to look at you properly. “You are not meant to say such things, princess! The King had very generously permitted you to keep your title and allow you to remain in the palace. You would do well to acknowledge his kindness.”
You bow your head, embarrassed by your childish outburst. You were thirteen now - far too old to be scolded like a little child. Meena's expression softens at the look on your face and she returns to her place behind you to start braiding your hair.
“Besides,” she continues, “what does it matter to you if the prince marries Dina? Would you like to be married to him instead?”
She sneaks a glance at you through the mirror and smirks as you begin blushing furiously at her suggestion.
You?! Marry Miguel?! But he was … he was a boy! A boy you’d grown up with like your own brother! You lower your head as a warm flush creeps over your entire body.
“Never mind that for now, little kitten,” Meena dismisses you gently. “Let's get you to bed.”
You lie down and wait for your nursemaid to tuck you under the covers - just as she always does every night. You were still a child after all; still too young to be thinking about marriage to anyone let alone the future king.
Miguel stormed into his father’s study, his body hot with rage after he'd learned of your departure the night before. How could you … How could you leave him?! Just like that?! Without even saying goodbye! And why had you left him anyway?! You were happy here! With him.
“Father!” he exclaimed as soon as he saw him. “You have to bring her back! You have to … You have to command those priestesses to bring her back here, now!”
The king raised an eyebrow, amused by his son’s childish tantrum. “Bring who back, my son?”
“Y/N!” Miguel responded. “She can’t … She can’t leave! She is needed here! Not at the temple with those … with those …” He paused, struggling to find a word to describe the priestesses without outright insulting them - they were the representatives of the Goddess, after all, and even he wouldn’t dare insult a Goddess. No matter that they had just stolen his best friend in the entire world from him.
His father chuckled and set his scroll aside. His son was seventeen now - old enough to leave the school and begin his official training to become the next king. And yet, here he was, whining like a child, begging his father to bring his friend back. “And what reason would I have to make such a challenge to the Temple?”
Miguel frowned, frustrated. Why did his father not understand?! You were meant to be by his side. Always! “Because … Because she is mine!”
The king laughed, delighted by his son’s childish innocence.
“I am afraid that is not a good enough reason, my son,” he informed him, turning back to his desk in dismissal. “Find me another and I might consider it.”

when i believed in forever (everything would stay the same)
Summary: Jon Kent returns home from his five-year sabbatical in space to find an Earth overtaken by vampires. He also finds Damian.
Thanks @agnes-come-back-challenge and @ladybirdbeewrites for betaing!
--
Jon would know Damian’s heartbeat anywhere.
It was honestly kind of pathetic, if he really let himself sit down and think about it. Five years in space – five years spent dodging Ultraman and his stupid, stupid volcano prison on Earth 3 – and now he was back, and it was like no time had passed at all because he still knew Dami’s heart as well as he knew Mom and Dad’s.
So he knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that whatever that thing was meditating down in that League of Assassins base, it wasn’t Damian.
Sure, it looked like him. When it’d talked to Talia earlier – and was that really Talia, or was it just another thing masquerading as her? – it'd sounded like him. It even meditated like him, cross-legged and straight-backed with its lip jutted out like it was trying to force the universe into submission through sheer willpower alone.
But Damian had a little scar in his aorta – had had it ever since he’d got himself run through by the Heretic. Damian’s heart made a funny little squelching noise every time the blood rushed over it. Damian’s heart beat at a cool 57 beats per minute, except for when he went on missions with Tim, which always made it shoot up to 62.
Fake Damian had gotten the scar right, Jon could give the guy that much. But it hadn’t managed to nail the tempo. Its heartbeat didn’t even sound like a person’s; every beat came sluggish and spasmatic, like its veins were full of treacle, or some kind of weird, ultra-thick syrup.
Most importantly, Jon thought sullenly, tugging his cape tighter around his shoulders, the real Damian had never had fangs.

I wish I knew more about the Warhammer series, But my ability to hyperfixate isn't strong enough to take on that beast.
And yet, I cannot stop thinking about the Kriegsman.
Imagining Krieger-Marines, and Krieg Sisters of Battle.
Despite the size, the power, they are hard to notice. Somehow small and quiet despite being so big. A Wish to die for the emperor, one they cannot let come true until the right moment.
Pale, quiet ghosts on the battle field, moving and striking down Xeno Scum and Heretics, in ways simultaneously Swift, Quiet, and Brutal. No fanfare, no shriek of victory, nor cheer of heroics.
Poltergeists nigh unseen, entirely unheard until their raspy, ragged voices rake across one's ears like sandpaper, clinging to the mind like a viscous, oily film, a near silent prayer and self-assurance, a damnation unto their Enemies; a wish for their greatest sacrifice, and in that way it is;
They Wish to Die for the Emperor. They will not until the have burned every last trace of those against his will out of existence.
The Caustic home, granting Immunity to Nurgle.
The only desire is that of death, freeing themselves from sinking into Slaanesh's hands.
An Unshakable Knowledge of their Purpose, the Repentance for their ancestor's actions, Incorrigible by Tzeentch.
There is little rage, hatred in their souls. There is no senselessness in their acts; each one to Further the emperors will. That is simply the fact of it. There is no love or lust for the sight of a dead enemy in their hearts, and so they feed Khorne very little.
Yeah, I have NO CLUE how much this aligns with 40K lore, but like. I love the concept of the Krieg and how they seem just different enough from the rest of the Imperium of Man. My favorite Suicidal maniacs <3

a/n: it's been one of the worst weeks of my life, so here's a little angst. i hope to have more out soon, and aside from the other two parts of this (well, one, bc the third part is smutty), some softer things!
Tumblr media
You sigh deeply as you climb into bed, alone, for the billionth time. Your bed used to be warm, full, and safe, and now it’s just cold. For a while, you couldn’t even stand the feeling and had to sleep on the couch, but then one month turned into four, and you had to go back to the bed at some point.
For four months, your boyfriend was trapped in a prison world by one of your best friends. When he finally got out, he brought chaos along with him in the form of one curse and a hundred deaths. One of those, being his own. Luckily, he had drunk the blood of a vampire, which brought him back, but not quite as the same boy he used to be.
The first night after his transformation, he returned to bed with you. By morning, he was gone. When asked what happened, he couldn’t really say. His emotions, already confusing, were even more out of place, and he couldn’t predict even his own usually sporadic actions. A taste for blood and a ringing in his ear kept him up all night, and the sight of you made him afraid. If he’d hurt you, he would never forgive himself.
So, for the last three weeks, your bed has been empty just as it had when he was gone. Frankly, you have no idea where Kai sleeps, or if he even does. The rest of the heretics have taken to an old abandoned house on the town’s border, but you doubt he’s there. Worry keeps you awake most nights, and the only reason you fall asleep is out of pure exhaustion. You love him, but lately you feel like he loves you less.
Tonight’s like any other in your new routine. Watch an episode and drink down a glass of wine. Or bourbon. Or even vodka, on worse days. Curl yourself into a ball when you finally do go up to bed. Cuddle into the stuffed bat that Caroline gifted you after she found out what happened after the 1903 visit. She knew it hurt you, what Bonnie did. Even if it was “for the better”, she knew it broke your heart.
You kiss the head of the little animal, then heave a heavy sigh. Sleep could overtake you in five minutes or five hours, depending on what your body demands. After three minutes, you start counting sheep, calling on the help of more animals to guide you to REM.
Forty-six sheep have jumped the fence when there’s suddenly a bold knock at your door. You scramble in anxiety, but then freeze in an attempt to hear better.
Maybe you imagined it. Maybe you had finally fallen asleep.
But then there’s another knock.
It’s probably Damon, you think. He’s disturbed you several times in the middle of the night. He probably lost a hold of his mother and is wondering if you’ve seen her. Or it’s Caroline, seeking advice whilst forgetting the time on the clock. Or maybe it’s your upstairs neighbor, angry about you taking his usual parking spot, since he took yours the day before.
Your head runs rampant with possibilities as you urge yourself to answer the door. Your blanket is still wrapped around your body, though you leave your bat in bed.
When you open the door, you’re stunned to see none other than Kai Parker standing there, smiling, despite pain clouding in his eyes.
“Kai?” You ask, voice quieter than you intended.
“Hi.”
“What are you doing here? It’s late.”
It’s weird to see him. Honestly, you had to run back your memory and try to think if your last conversation ended in a break-up. It hadn’t.
“Can I come in?”
He’s been invited in; he was on the first night. Still, he asks now.
“Okay.”
You shut the door as he enters. Then, pulling the blanket closer to you, you nod to the couch. He follows, but you sit on separate ends.
“You look warm,” he says.
You bite back a reply to say you feel the opposite. In fact, your whole apartment feels cold without him. “What brings you here?” You repeat instead.
“I miss you.” He shrugs off his boots, but leaves the jacket on. “And I’m sorry.”
You furrow your eyebrows and he immediately sighs.
“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. The only time we’ve talked in weeks is at the grill, and even then, I’ve been distant.”
“Mhm. So why now? What changed?”
“I promised you I’d be the best boyfriend I could be when we started dating, and I know for a fact that I haven’t been. And things have been difficult lately, y’know, since 1903, and the wedding, and the… everything. There’s been a lot of change. A lot of adjustments.” He’s stalling and you both know it.
“Make your point, Parker,” you say coldly.
“I was sitting at the grill, just now, watching this couple. They were both drunk off their asses and being all handsy, and the bartender kicked them out for it, and everyone in that bar knows what they’re doing right now. But on their way out, they had to pass me, and heard them both tell the other they loved them, and it made me think of you. The first time you told me you loved me. The first time I said it back, and the first time I recognized I felt it, even if I didn’t understand it. Made me think of you, and our relationship, and what I’ve seemingly abandoned, but I promise, I never wanted this to become of us.” Tears well in his eyes as he rambles. You’ve never seen him cry. “Everything I said, that night after I left, was true. I’m so scared to hurt you that I don’t even want to put you in a position where I could. And on top of that… don’t you hate me?! I ruined your life, Y/N. I ruined your best friends’ lives, I killed my whole family. Why don’t you fucking hate me?!”
“Do you want me to hate you?”
“No! I love you, and you’re the only person who has ever loved me, but I’m a fucking horrible person.”
“Everyone in this town is fucking horrible, have you seen it? People, in general, are flawed and vicious, and yet most people have at least a few to whom they stick, and love, and are loved back.”
“You’re not like that.”
“But I still have flaws.”
“Your only flaw is loving me.”
“Kai-”
“Don’t-”
“Don’t fucking interrupt me,” you snap, getting upset. “If I want to fucking love you, I will. I don’t see it as a flaw, no matter what you’ve done. I’m so pissed off at you right now, how you come here and act like loving you is a chore, when you’ve been the absent one. I haven’t slept well in five fucking months because I’ve been worried about you. I don’t care what fears you have about hurting me. If you feel that way, then let us work through it. I’d rather have at least been given the chance to help you than for you to just block me out. I do love you, and while I have to convince myself every day that you still love me, it doesn’t make me love you less. I fucking wish I could. If I could, I’d turn off my fucking humanity and not give a shit, but I can’t do that, so I sit in this apartment and rot.”
He opens his mouth, but then stops and bites his tongue. Smart.
“I can’t take this anymore, emotionally.” You finally say. “I need you here or I need you out.”
To avoid his gaze any longer, you stand up and head to the kitchen. He watches you turn on the Keurig and retrieve a cup, but doesn’t say anything. You turn your back for two seconds to grab the creamer from the fridge, and when you turn around again, he’s there, pulling sugar from your cupboard. You jump, not used to seeing him move so fast, and for a moment, forgetting heretics could. He swallows hard, seemingly taking it as a sign you’re afraid of him.
“Give me that,” he gestures to the carton in your hand. His tone is gentle, there’s nothing demanding about it.
For some reason, you do. You stand there, watching, as he crafts your cup of coffee in the way he always would. He has a way in the kitchen that you’d never understand.
He snaps his fingers, and immediately you bring him the cinnamon from your spice rack. It’s muscle memory, part of your routine.
He then puts the cup under the stream of hot coffee as the Keurig works its own magic. Eye contact is avoided at all costs. He stares down at your marble cabinet. Your eyes are trained on his arm.
When the coffee is done pouring, he sets it in front of you to cool. For a minute, you won’t touch it. For a minute, he can explain.
“I still love you. And in an attempt to not hurt you, I hurt you worse than I could’ve imagined. It’s not an excuse, but 1903 did something to me. I shut down, emotionally, I think. It felt hopeless, any chance of escaping, or of seeing you again. My only company were the heretics that had been there for a century and had no idea, whatsoever, of how to escape.” He’s running out of time. You watch the steam cool off the top of your cup.
“I told them about you, and how much I loved you… because I was feeding them. I woke them all up and let them drink from me. Those scars all healed when I turned, but my arms and neck were littered with bites. God, I’m glad you didn’t see it. But I was so bored, and lonely, and wanted to know if they had any idea of how to get out. Again, they didn’t. But then, one day that we were plotting an escape, I remembered how we got Bonnie out, and realized it would be applicable to that time, considering Quetsi-what died in the days of the Greeks.”
You almost chuckle at that.
“But when I got out, I was so hellbent on revenge, that I did what I did, and I know I did everything wrong, and I should’ve just come to you, but my brain isn't… wired that way.” He hesitates to say that detail. At the end of the day, he’s still a sociopath. If revenge is on his mind, it’s the only thing on his mind.
“And so I’m sorry about all of it. I swore I would protect you, and that included protecting you emotionally, and I’ve failed at that. I don’t want out, I want to be here, if you’ll have me back.”
You take a sip of the coffee, now cool. The flavors are perfect and warm your cold soul up just the way you’ve needed it for months.
“I’d rather have you with me than anywhere else,” you admit.
“Every day without you has been a living hell.”
“Where have you been sleeping?”
“Sometimes with the heretics. Sometimes in the old Lockwood cellar, or just the woods. A couple times…” he stops himself.
“A couple times?”
“Outside your apartment. In the bushes. Where I could hear your heartbeat, but could keep a safe distance.”
“Kai…”
“I really hope you watched a lot of sad movies, and that they were the reason for your tears.”
You bite your lip. You both know you didn’t.
“Y/N?”
“Hm?”
“I’m sorry.” In half a second, he’s in front of you, rubbing his thumb along your chin.
You still don’t look at him. “Please don’t leave me again.”
“I won’t. I swear-” he stops. He swore to you last time. “I promise I won’t. I won’t leave you, ever.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Tears flood your eyes once more as you wrap your arms around his body. You bury your face in his chest, and he pulls you close. Hands find their way to your hair, massaging your head comfortingly. With time, you find your way back to the couch, coffee in hand. But despite the strength of the coffee, you’re asleep in no time. You’re finally back in the warmth and safety of his arms.

Do you have any favorite naruto fics you’d recommend? Any pairing, complete or not, on-hiatus, gen, oneshots, anything is fine lol
I was legitimately just pruning my bookmarks the other day!! thank you so much for asking.
I don't read too much fanfic these days, and I'm picky when I do--only about grammar/punctuation and immersion though. I ship a LOT of stuff (I guess The Youth would call me a proshipper) and although I never read darkfic, I don't shy away from weirder kinks and unhealthy relationship stuff.
categorizing by pairing, if applicable. some of them are smutty, and please note that the first 3 come from FFN which doesn't have a tagging system, but there is some SA CW I'll give in advance.
KAKASAKU | my first OTP! formative fics that totally reshaped my understanding of what fanfiction could be, and how well-written chemistry can make it or break it
HOUSE OF CROWS is the quintessential kakasaku fanfic. it was written during shippuden and so is canon divergent because of that, but also tells a comprehensive story of its own right that is intriguing and well planned. excellent characterization and world building. leaves me gutted in the best way on my yearly reread.
DUTY BEFORE HONOR is another silvershine classic. I don't reread is as often as House of Crows but they are just about equal in quality. again, the chemistry between them is off the charts, and the world feels so alive.
WILL OF FIRE for me is up there with House of Crows in being essential kakasaku reading. cynchick is a multisaku champion and a wonderful storyteller. the stakes in this one are stressful, the romance tense and believable, and we once again get lovely world building and great chemistry.
ITAKISA | a pairing near and dear to me, because men who do everything wrong are so deeply relatable. they both know they don't deserve anything good ever again but they found each other!!!! ARE YOU GUYS SEEING THIS--
A SHARK HIDDEN INN THE LEAVES doesn't have my favorite version of Kisame, but he's plenty close enough. it's a lengthy oneshot that got me into certain *ahem* kinks. it is a very fun and wild fic that is entirely self-aware of how absurd it's being, and manages to have nothing but sincerity at the same time (and I highly recommend the author's other stories as well)
AN ORCHESTRA PLAYING ON, INSANE is a modern AU (extremely rare in my bookmarks) that absolutely tore my heart out. god is it SO much to ask for these losers to be happy?! yes, it is, and I love every moment of it
MADAMITO | a rarepair I am SUCH a sucker for that has some of the most talented authors writing for it. lots of them have ot3 elements between them and hashirama, often angsty, but stuff like that is part of the appeal for me, lol
A HANDFUL OF SKY is an unfinished fic that I genuinely think about like once a week. if it ever updates then I will be over the moon. technically hashimadamito but it hadn't quite gotten there yet
LIKE ALTARS is just such a beautiful piece of writing, mostly on madara. it is everything, that is all
BLOOD AND RIVER WATER is more mito-centric but has one of my favorite madaras of all time
YOURS ARE RATTLED BONES is another short, mito-centric but gut-wrenching piece featuring the opposite type of madara from the last one
OTHER | character-centric stuff that isn't necessarily shippy but also doesn't have a very "gen" vibe either?
A SERPENT IN THE RICE is a little series about orochimaru that makes me feel so so so many things. highly recommended
HERETIC is such a love letter to kushina, and kurama too. cannot stress enough how much I adore this one
there's a few others that I probably won't link on tumblr, mostly unhealthy and/or "problematic" smut hhfhdj but maybe I'll make a public rec list on ao3 for these different categories and stuff like that.
but yeah that's pretty much it!!! I know it's not a huge list with a lot of variety but it's what I've enjoyed over the last 15+ years in the naruto fandom.

Updates:
1— My mother is still hospitalized; they discovered she had three different "pockets" of pneumonia, and sepsis, and that her lungs were in some way pulling on her heart, and the hospital doctors say all of this was 100% preventable if her usual doctor had paid any serious attention to her complaints. The hospital currently has the pneumonia and sepsis under control, apparently, and has been able to dial down how much oxygen they're feeding her to keep her, well, oxygenated, but they haven't gotten her heart back to normal (she has arrhythmia and some scarring at the best of times) and refuse to send her out of intensive care until they can get her pulse down.
(My response: "I love you and I know it's boring and miserable for you, but good for them. Also you're getting a new doctor in the city once you're out.")
2— My bff, his other friend/our housemate Ash, and I distracted ourselves by watching four episodes of Tales of the Empire (all three of us are intense SW people in somewhat different ways). I was pretty tired, but my general thought was that I enjoyed the short form, the stories were fairly compelling in execution, and the animation style is way less grating than what I saw of TCW's characters, but it seems to assume and almost require a level of familiarity with so much other stuff that it's a little meh for me personally (e.g. I know of the witches of Dathomir, but not enough to care that much without being given a reason in this story). It's kind of an unfortunate contrast with Fallen Order, which is unfair given how much time FO had, but which internally supplies so much of the interest and stakes that I don't have to anchor it to my previous SW experience to care.
3— Ash has been eager to experience mainstays of PNW city life, including chain stores and restaurants. We started, as I mentioned before, with Trader Joe's, but we've been driving around different areas so she could also experience Jack in the Box, Shari's, Fred Meyer's, and even (going further afield) a Weinerschnitzel.
She's also asked things like "how do people feel about Southern jibberjabber" because some of the people she's met here seem puzzled by her chattiness, and she wanted to make sure she wasn't offending them. We explained that people here tend to be direct but are more likely to be surprised than offended by her level of friendliness. And then, when we were talking about shops to go to today, she was like, "won't they be closed?"
Us: ????????????
Her: It's a Sunday, right?
Me: ...ah. Uh, no, that is, uh, generally not an issue.
BFF: This is a land of godless heretics!
Her: So people just work every day of the week?
BFF: Well, there are usually different shifts at the stores, so it's not always the same person running things, but there's generally someone there.
Me: Some places with smaller staff do shut down for a day out of the week, but it's not necessarily on Sundays. It might just as easily be on Mondays or Thursdays.
Her: O_O
