over the last 3 months i have seen myself called (and sometimes blocked for being assumed to be):

a racist/a bigot

homophobic/queerphobic/transphobic

ace/demi-phobic

a fascist

for expressing opinions such as "I found the characters and background stories in Veilguard weaker and less interesting than previous Dragon Age games" and "i miss the amount of tension and conflict that we used to get to explore with the player character depending on their in-game background and life history" and "i did not feel Lucanis' character and romance arc was fully satisfying while I was playing through it".

and since this all started we now have:

seen the entire DA staff laid off from Bioware

heard many now-former bioware devs talking about how toxic the workplace was during the development of DA4

seen allusions to Bioware/EA executives overriding plot/plans that the Dragon Age writers/devs would have preferred

extracted large amounts of cut content from the games that show things like increased emotional response range for Rook, or alternate endings for companion arcs (NOT concept art content, but actual written and even voice-recorded dialogue in the game files), or increased impact from decisions you could make in the game

IN ADDITION to what we ALREADY knew about how many times the game changed direction/leadership changed/the mid-process layoffs, etc.

so can we maybe not keep putting "people who come into the Dragon Age universe from a place of love and were ultimately disappointed with the latest installment" in the same trash bucket as "dudes on twitter who were mad there were trans/nonbinary characters in their AAA game". can we FUCKING as a community acknowledge that there are many reasons someone might not jive with a change in direction other than jumping to "they disagree with me so they must obviously be horrible people, whose opinions shouldn't be counted anyway" (<-if this is your first impulse maybe examine that also).

i am so tired and i am never gonna get an apology for any of it but NOW that a lot of the people who were posting/reblogging these sentiments are hearing/seeing all these other things add up. it's like suddenly now it's "acceptable" to have problems with aspect of Veilguard or want more from it, because the writers/devs have shown they probably did too during it's creation. whereas when I said these things right off the bat (because the only thing we had was the game we got. not the game we can pretend they wanted to make instead) it WASN'T because apparently expressing opinions on my personal tumblr counts as "being mean to/harassing devs who worked hard on the game" or, again, assumed I am a racist/bigot/facist/queerphobic.

you're allowed to still like Veilguard. it's fine i promise. you can love the game if you love it and my not loving it has nothing to do with your own relationship to this piece of media. i am happy there are people who truly can enjoy it without massive Caveats. but i am still seeing like 3-5 posts Per Week express those opinions and it is really destroying my love for the community i once enjoyed.

yes closer by nine inch nails is a really hot song for regular reasons but to fully understand its effect you need to consider its place in the larger narrative of the downward spiral. your narrator is a man who, throughout the first third of the album, has just been through all of the events that kick off his spiral of complete and utter self destruction. the painful betrayal of someone he used to trust, which he cannot even admit to himself hurt him in any way. the utter loss of faith in a religion he was clinging onto, because he cannot conceptualize of a loving god in the face of the suffering christianity has brought upon him and the world in general. and lastly the violent subjugation that authority and society at large has used to pick him apart no matter how much he tries to please them. all of that leading into a song that on contextless listen mostly sounds like it's about desperate animalistic sex. which it is. but once you take those events into consideration, it becomes so much more clear that there is also the gorgeously erotic desperation of a man who is beginning to lose touch with humanity because of the violence wrought upon him, seeking to redirect that violence through sex in order to feel any sort of power. it's in how much the narrator emphasizes that the subject is "letting him" violate/desecrate/penetrate. it's in how much baggage saying that the subject brings him closer to god has when two songs ago he was screaming about god being dead because of the manipulative nature of his experience with religion, being brought closer to god now taking on the meaning of being able to desecrate her entirely. it's in the focus on the primal senses he's feeling, the desire to get away from himself and his sense of reasoning, when in the broader narrative this is the last point before the narrator actively starts to distance himself from humanity and become more machine than man. it's in the fact that when he says "you make me perfect," that is essentially the only positive thing he says about himself or anyone else throughout the entire album, and it is directly followed up with "help me become somebody else."

essentially, it's about using sex as a method of feeling anything pleasurable at all when you feel like you're at your lowest (and then getting even lower afterwards). it's about feeling like you are stuck in an absolutely horrific life where you hate every fiber of your being and are utterly powerless against any of the forces keeping you there, but the one thing that is holding you together and convincing you that you are worth anything as a person is the animalistic sense of power you have over someone else by means of subjugating them sexually. which. once you have context for them, all of those things make the song even hotter.

and all of that of course feeds into the reasons why, while closer is undeniably an incredibly hot song, the hottest song on the downward spiral is reptile. where the narrator, now having lost all humanity, returns to this same person because of what we now learn is (at least to him in his machine-state) her sexual manipulation towards him. faded behind the last chorus, you can hear him begging her to let him go, screaming no, even begging her not to hurt him in some live performances of the song. (i recommend listening to the woodstock 94' performance in particular to hear the begging and screaming better, but that's also because i'm normal about trent reznor covered in mud.) i could go on about this but i will save us all time and conclude with if you, like me, enjoy emotionally damaging freak sex as well as industrial music, you can and should be beating your meat to all of the downward spiral and not just closer, not because closer is not worth jacking it to, but because it is even more worth jerking that thing to closer when you know just how fucked up the sex they're having is. thank you and goodnight.

I've been watching The Westward (thank you for that btw, its been really good up to season four so far) and I've noticed that all the dragon characters have different colored horns and powers like you said on your post the other day. Was it like that in the manga perhaps or was it an anime change?

(I'm glad you like it!) But I can't say that the different colored horns was an anime-only choice as there are plenty of different horned dragons within the comic.

Looks like both Ocean Dragons and River Dragons have different colored horns to show which family or sub-family clan they are a part of. I do enjoy how this manga goes into more dragon politics and how that is both connected and disconnected from Heaven's politics.

I haven't caught up with the manga in a while but this ask if a good excuse as any to re-read!

i would honestly hesitate to even call solarpunk a genre the same way that cyberpunk and steampunk are genres. the latter have fiction associated with them and the former seems to be more of an artistic movement than anything

Where are you guys getting that? Because as far as I'm aware she very blatantly *hasn't* struggled and *does* have people that care about her.

She has an average decent life! Parents who care about her, enough money to be comfortable, a best friend (former), even a therapist who literally cared about her side too much for her own good.

She's jealous of an immigrant boy with a dead dad and barely enough money to feed himself because he's had a more exciting life then her.

But she's at Aguefort! Surely excitement is just around the corner if that's what she really wants.

But it's not. She goes out of her way to do the least exciting, bare minimum task to pass her classes. Yeah it takes a while but it's not hard and thats not the standard. She had to *choose* to not do interesting things at Aguefort. She doesn't want to work harder or actually struggle like she claims she just wants to drag people down so she looks better in comparison.

It *is* tragic that she was murdered for a rage god. But that does not mean she was a good person before or that she was secretly struggling before that.

Jerks also don't deserve to die.

At one point, I had the idea of a crossover between these fandoms. Why not? What would happen to the world of cultivators if Jian Yuelou appeared in their world? Jian Chen just wanted to save his brother, Wei Wuxian, and decides to take a desperate step: to call his ancestor for help. The clans want Wei Wuxian dead, the word of the young head of the Yunmen order means practically nothing. He finds a ritual in which to summon the strongest of the order. But an ancestor may refuse to help if he thinks it's none of his business. Fortunately for Wanyin, Jian Yuelou decides to help him. When he learns what the Jin Order is doing to the prisoners of the Wen clan, he becomes enraged. He summons Jin Dacheng from the world of the dead (yes, he was once the head of the Jin order) and shows what path his order has taken. Needless to say, Jin Dacheng staged a moral and physical beating of his descendants? When they tried to kill them, the summoned cultivators only snorted: we can't be killed, we're already dead.

So Aloysius is a hilarious character to me, the guy's just a plain jerk with no redeeming qualities whatsoever (even Fassad loved his mouse and had a family that cared about him) And then after being an awful guy for the entire game he just ends up completely bankrupt sobbing in a bar about his misfortunes while his wife is cozying up to Mr. Prettyman back at home

So whenever he gets involved in any of my musings I'm pretty much invariably expanding on this and using him as a punching bag (literally so in one of my last posts)

So, basically, Aloysius is a big, insecure loser He's always been this whiny doofus desperate for respect and wealth, but not being able to get it He and Lardna were probably, like, high school or college "sweethearts," meaning he was obsessed with her (popular rich girl that would instantly raise him to the popular circle) and she liked the way he would do literally anything she asked him to with no self-respect whatsoever

Predictably enough, their marriage wasn't particularly cozy Just ended up together largely because it's the expected course for straight couples and they had to keep their respectable image Had kids because that's the next step that comes with that.

(I made this stupid thing for Valentine's Day this year, guess posting it here works)

And so the Minch family begins, and Aloysius becomes increasingly more frustrated with the lack of respect he's earned in life His kids are ungrateful drains on his wallet that don't listen to him unless he raises his fist at them His wife never paid him any mind before of course, but they were a husband and wife now and she should be obeying him like a proper spouse, right? r-right, honey? But she seemed even less interested in him than she ever had before, and now even seemed like she resented him for tying her to this family. When all he's ever tried to do is make her happy! The nerve! And none of his neighbors respected him, despite being one of the richest and most traditional families in town. Heck, he even tried to buy the next-door neighbor's gratitude with a loan, but now whenever he brings it up that idiot father just laughs and slaps him on the back like they're pals or something!

So yeah, lots of tension around the Minch household. Aloysius feels completely spiteful about how he perceives his status, and is desperate to have someone below him on the social ladder that he can push around - this usually ends up being his children, because he's a horrible human being

So this all changes when his son runs off one day

This is at first infuriating - oh yes, yes, I'm worried sick too, of course - until he gets a phone call from Porky. At first he starts screaming at him, until Porky tells him where he is and he falls completely silent. Porky's made it big. He's in the city now with one Mr. Geldegarde Monotoli, and the two of them are now the richest men in Eagleland. How'd you like to be our new business partner, Dad?

Aloysius drops everything and packs his bags with stars and dollar signs in his eyes, hightailing it to Fourside without even telling his wife or younger son. He's finally getting the life he deserves, and his old one can rot.

So Aloysius Minch is living it up, fawning over Porky and Monotoli and profiting off their success, living it up in absolute luxury and success without having to lift a finger himself

I have this WIP fic about Porky and Monotoli that Aloysius gets to have a role in, so I have a lot of super fun stuff with him here but I shouldn't get into all of it if I don't want it to be spoiled before I ever actually release it

Long story short, one day the Monotoli Corporation's stock plummets to the depths of Hades, no warning whatsoever Aloysius is woken out of one of his daily naps and nearly has a heart attack when he find out that all the riches he invested are completely gone

Immediately he flips out and starts looking for Porky to scream at him, but his son is nowhere to be found. He's fled to who-knows-where, and apparently had the foresight to liquidize all his riches before the crash He turns to shout at Monotoli instead who's now just as powerless and pathetic as he is, but (this is one of my fanfic ideas slipping through) Monotoli grows a spine for the first time in his life and throws Aloysius out

So Aloysius runs sobbing to the bar to drink his sorrows away, too ashamed to go home where his wife and that other kid are probably furious at him, and that's him at the end of the game

I think when he eventually does go back, she's probably hardly noticed how long he's been gone at all. Much to his displeasure, she's been having a positively lovely time with Mr. Prettyman. He's so good with money, do you know? And what about you? Did you bring anything back from your little trip?

Unsurprisingly they get a divorce not long after. Lardna gets practically everything, Aloysius moves into a waitwaitwaitwaitwait i was just gonna say an apartment but wouldn't it be funny if he moved into the seaside house in the game my god that'd be hilarious ahhhhhh and it could be Ness who sells it to him too holy fudge that's so good

So yeah, Aloysius is a pathetic jerk with insecurities that he takes out on his kids, and when he ends up burning bridges to go and short-sightedly chase his fortune, it completely crashes and burns and he ends up far lower than he was to begin with
