The Temptation of Jupiter
So I was thinking about Jupiter Ascending again, as one does, and about the folklore and fairy tale motifs that people have pointed out before. But then I realized there’s another set of possible parallels I haven’t seen discussed-- between the three “offers” she receives from the three Abrasax siblings and the three temptations of Jesus.
So first we have Kalique, who, in order to maintain her own status quo, offers Jupiter the chance to step into her mother’s place-- to rule, mirroring Satan offering Jesus all the kingdoms of the world.
Secondly, we have Titus, who tempts her with the idea that she’ll be able to stop the Harvest if she takes up her power alongside him. This one mirrors Satan daring Jesus to demonstrate his own power by jumping off the temple and relying on angelic intervention. Notably, this is the only one she falls for.
And lastly, we have Balem, who tempts Jupiter with survival (for herself and her family), reflecting the devil offering Jesus food to break the near-starvation he was in at the end of his fast.
The narrative structure of the Chosen One proving to the audience that they are worthy by rejecting offers to abuse their power or position is not uncommon, but I thought it was fun to look at it through this lens and how the Wachowski siblings played with the 3-temptation arc. Jesus’s resistance is made possible, it seems, through his supernatural nature and superior knowledge of scripture. Jupiter’s is based on her sense of everyday common decency. In essence, they used it in the opposite way from the Bible writers. The gospel narrative is trying to show Jesus to be special enough to be worthy; Jupiter, taken together with such lines as telling Balem that his mother’s problem was never having scrubbed a toilet, is written to be ordinary enough to be worthy.

Tikkun Olam
by Eshnoazot
Jupiter Jones does not call herself Seraphi Abrasax, she names herself Jupiter Jones with fierce words, and names herself Esther after a beautiful orphaned Queen who once vowed to prevent a genocide. She names herself Judith, because she is ready to bleed and die to protect her planet, she names herself Rahab who betrayed one people for the sake of another. She names herself Deborah, the prophetess, a judge, and she judges the ‘verse unacceptable.
She crowns herself in oaths and promises and walks away from eternity for the sake of freedom.

Telling the Bees
That day, he went back to the old farmhouse for the first time in years. It looked even worse than it had the first time he’d seen it, a dilapidated two-story infested with vermin. The perfect place to stay out of the way, unnoticed, as he watched for interference from the rest of the galaxy. An exile he’d resented, that had ruined his life and more importantly, his daughter’s. Or so it had seemed.
Stinger landed the car and sat a long moment before he made himself get out. There, the window that had been Kiza’s; there the hole in the wall where the bounty hunters had come through…
For Jupiter.
His eyes blazed gold for a moment. He walked around the house slowly, knocking on each hive, skating up into the air to reach the ones tucked under the eaves on the second story. He felt the humming in his blood. No matter what she’d wanted to believe, he wasn’t human. He never had been. But it hadn’t mattered to her.
The bees were waiting.
He drew a deep breath and hummed. “The Queen is dead,” he rasped, throat thick with tears that surprised him. He thought he’d banished them when Caine called him with the news.
“Jupiter is dead.”
The note of the humming changed, and slowly, the bees returned to their hives. Stinger watched them go before he got back in the car and flew away.
He’d known the instant he’d answered the call and seen Caine’s face. He looked broken in a way nothing—not the loss of his wings, of his pack, of Captain Tsing and all the other friends in the Harvest Wars—had ever done.
They’d all known it was coming, of course. That Abrasax witch had oozed sympathy and satisfaction in equal measure as Jupiter withered practically before their eyes. Her own supply of Regenex was running dangerously low, it was said, but for now she clung to her good looks. But the Aegis was shutting down another black factory every day, it seemed. Soon she would be cornered at last.
Stinger could feel the same future in his own bones. He’d made his compromises over the years, for himself and for Kiza, but time would run out for him too.
Caine was closer than he was; he hadn’t had a drop of Regenex since Jupiter’s ascension. He didn’t fear his own death, never had; it was Jupiter he’d begged to save. She had almost not forgiven him for that.
So it was the face of an old, old mutt he saw on the screen. Age had lightened his skin and hair even further from the brown he should have been born with if he’d been made right, instead of a mutant and a runt. Lines and scars creased his face, and his skin hung from his bones. His eyes were dark with the news. With his pain.
“Stinger.” Caine started, then stopped. Stinger clenched one hand out of sight to keep from humming.
“She’s gone,” he managed at last, and broke the connection. Stinger turned away from the screen, throat burning with all the tears and the hums he refused to let out. Then he went to tell the bees.
Now here he was in front of the screen again, waiting for Kiza to answer. His eyes had gone honey-gold and stayed that way; he’d had to put the car on auto to get home. At least with so many splices around these days, he didn’t have to wear sunglasses to hide anymore.
That was Jupiter’s doing.
He remembered their first conversation. “I don’t think people would want to know the truth,” he’d said.
“I do,” she’d answered, earnest and thoughtful and utterly naïve.
In the end, she hadn’t wanted to know the truth either, but she’d faced it, and in doing, had forced Stinger to face it too.
At last, Kiza answered. It hurt Stinger deep inside to see her comfortably middle-aged; comfortably, because his illegal, natural daughter had always been comfortable in her own skin. She was happy in her place on Corinthia, with her husband and her children and her job as one of the chief administrators for the new colony. Stinger was the one who mourned the aging, the slow march of time.
Time, he reminded himself again, she would not have had without Jupiter’s reforms, without the recoding of her broken genes by the very Earth scientists he had thought so little of when he had known them to be lambs for the slaughter.
“Dad?” she asked, and he realized he had been staring at her.
“Kiza,” he began. Stopped. Started again. “Kiza, it’s Jupiter. She’s gone.”
Kiza closed her eyes, her normally merry face suddenly drawn, and started to hum. An answering sound rose from the hive in the corner of her study, barely audible over the connection, but Stinger felt it in his bones.
“Thank you, Dad. I’ll tell the others. Is Caine all right?”
Stinger snorted. “No, he’s not. He’s not going to be.”
“Are you all right?”
Stinger stared at the empty screen, remembering. Jupiter Bolotnikov, Jupiter Abrasax. The confused young woman who had fled to his house; the angry queen who had thrown the galaxy into war; the friend who had pressed him, as she had all of humanity, to live up to her dreams of what they could be.
Stinger got up and retrieved his last bottle of Regenex, and poured it down the drain.

Jupiter Ecliptic
by KitLaBelle
On Tsing’s ship above Earth, Jupiter relates the events that happened on Balem’s refinery and files all the appropriate paperwork to make her title and ownership of the Earth incontestable. Jupiter’s family is returned home with no memory of their disappearance, while Jupiter secretly retains ownership of the Earth. Her family buys her the telescope she wanted and Caine receives a pair of wings earlier removed from his body. It is while she is re-acclimating to Earth and her old life that she learns of the actual terms of Seraphi’s Will; she now owns three systems (one from each of her pre-incarnation’s children) with seven planets two of which are seeded – including Earth – a refinery on one of the planet’s moons; several alcazar, one sprawling on Jupiter’s Moon Callisto; a small fleet of ships, of which a Royal clipper is one; more money than she’s ever imagined, and the fact that the Keepers now obey her.
