The KowaPoke website was great, it also had the Junji Ito x Pokemon crossover art. I love these depictions of creepy PokeDex entries too...

Shuppet and Banette History
Tumblr media
(Art by Azurane on Deviantart)
Shuppet are ghost type pokemon originating in Hoenn, first being documented officially in the Hoennese Edo Period (1600s). They were said to be teru teru bōzu (small little paper dolls) come to life, playing pranks on the children that would mistreat them when they were still dolls. The Shuppet of this era had a slightly different appearance, being white and having paper instead of cloth cover them.
It wasn't until the 1940s that things began to change. During this time period, a popular brand of toy known as "ragged monsters" came out, which resembled what we know now as Banette. These toys quickly grew in popularity, subverting the expectation of regular humanoid dolls and appreciating the more creepy side of toys. These dolls were shipped to many other regions, with hundreds to thousands of them being made. Different variants of them were made as well to fit many occasions, and they became the staple of alternative toys at the time. (While I wasn't alive at that time, my ma did take part in this craze and I do have some of these dolls she decided to pass onto me).
But, like any craze, the popularity soon died out, and many of the dolls were abandoned and thrown away.
After that happened, complaints about seeing these dolls move on their own began to circle the region. Parents would say that their kids would see these strange toys move in the night and stand at the foot of their bed , almost with a vengeful energy. These dolls were recalled as to not anger anyone and to do more research on them. After extensive studies, it was revealed that these dolls were pokemon and the evolution of shuppet. This was a surprise to most, especially with it being the evolution of Shuppet, who was thought to have a rare evolution unrelated to these dolls. These pokemon were then named Jupetta, or Banette for Galarian speakers.

i'm gonna be honest lmao i don't know if i . can train them. i don't know if they respect me enough for that 💜
📚 Shuppet!
BABIES!
You know, weirdly enough, my ONLY interaction with Shuppet has been reading about them. I've never met one up close!
I think my favorite thing I've read is their potential as a service Pokemon! A lot of people have doubts about using ghosts for service training, but you know what, people have doubts about ghosts and everything. Shuppet are among the most docile ghosts, from what I hear, and their mischief isn't as intense or direct as you get from, oh, I don't know, a Misdreavus.
People are starting to breed them for it, but it's in the early stages of development, and we ghost breeders face a lot of backlash as it is. Getting a ghost certified as a legal service 'mon is bound to be a challenge. But it does my heart good to see people exploring the way these little guys can help people!

1) hi rose. first time actually talking to you on The Blog
2) i might as well put it here for research reasons though i already said on Gliscord. went to climb a mountain and came back down knowing about fae law. i don't technically remember if i saw the weird portal thing but i felt dizzy/dazed enough that Jupetta teleported me back home. i am now fighting the urge to put iron shavings everywhere.
Good luck 👍👍
Hi Basil, thank you for the report 💕
also for the sake of your safety put any iron shavings you have in solid sealed jars please

Delibird Delivery..? Well, really, it's more a Banette dressed as a Delibird that Teleports in with wrapped gifts. before vanishing back off again, like one of Santa's oddly spooky helpers, she pets as many Zorua as possible. In the package is a hilariously horrid holiday sweater. Patterned over the sweater is an open cardigan, but 'under' the cardigan is a hairy chest with 'I'M THE GIFT' tattooed over it. The 'cardigan' has a gaudey wrapping-paper like pattern, and fabric gift bows are sewn on.
Along with it is a seemingly homemade three-pack of decent-to-comically-bad horror films. The first is called Violent Past, and it's about a person having to battle the angry spirit of their deceased Pokemon. The second is called Shadows Lurking, about small town residents getting picked off by a very overexaggerated version of the Shadow Triad. The third is THE WERECANROC, about a Lycanroc werewolf trying to prove itself to its pack in an expectedly bloody fashion. The package isn't signed and there's no card in sight, but hopefully the Santa should be obvious.
Oh, truth and ideals. Basil. I asked for the worst holiday sweater you could find and you fucking DELIVERED. I think I’m set on ugly sweater competitions for the next decade now. Or honestly, the rest of my life. I’m going to pull this baby out twenty years from now and absolutely traumatize whatever kids and/or great niblings I have with this thing. It’ll be glorious. They’ll talk about “The Sweater” in hushed tones every holiday season for a month before each gathering. I can see this very clearly. I hope you do too.
Anyways, thanks for the movies! I’ll have to pause my Pawmark movie marathon so Amadeus can watch ‘em. …I should ask, was there any… intent… with the way you chose these? I mean, duh, a werelyc movie’s perfect! And I can talk to spirits and everything. So the second one is… well, I guess it’s probably just because illusions and all that. Yeah! Happy Delibird Day! Jupetta seems to enjoy delivery duty.

Banette mail!
It's Jupetta! She's holding what looks like roughly a third of a loaf of bread, still warm from the oven. Instead of having been cut apart like a normal person would do, it was carefully torn apart and distributed like that. She seems vaguley displeased with the craftsmanship of the tearing.
As soon as the bread is received, Jupetta teleports back home.
There's a knock at the door! But Rune isn't surprised. "ive got it." she shouts, while getting up from bed. wouldnt want her dad to get to it first.
Rune opens the door while rubbing her eyes... They look kinda red. "hey jupe." she says casually before seeing the bread and laughing a little. "asked for a slice not.. how much is this?" Ain't even sliced, she thinks.
She says a simple "thanks" as the Banette telepots away.

Delibird Delivery..? Well, really, it's more a Banette dressed as a Delibird that Teleports in- how the hell did she get all the way out here?- with wrapped gifts. Before vanishing back off again, she begs to meet the baby Skornaling, and then poofs off like one of Santa's oddly spooky helpers. In the package is a small daily calendar that boasts a Daily Evil Team Affirmation Note. Along with it is a black baby blanket with an embroidered skull-and-bones pattern, and a neatly folded gay pride flag.
Along with it is a seemingly homemade three-pack of decent-to-comically-bad horror films. The first is called DIYA YARU, which is a wildly inaccurate take on the ancient Sinnohian holiday of Diya no Yaru; the film itself is about Giratina actively hunting people down. The second is called Plasmatic, a post-apocalyptic story about what would happen if Team Plasma lost... it was produced in 2011. The third is called Run You Down, about a bloodthirsty Rotom that possessed a motorcycle. The package isn't signed and there's no card in sight, but hopefully the Santa should be obvious.
Guh...

Ya didn't have to do this for us, we don't even celebrate Delibird Day! But eh... thanks, a lot, either way.
GHAHHH THESE MOVIES. Ohhh I've heard of the first two they sound AWFUL I'm so excited. And that third one sounds so ridiculous and great at the same time.
Oh, and don't worry mysterious messenger~ Jupetta and Girlgoop get along really well ^_^
We really gotta come up with another name for em. Like Girlgoop is good but as like a middle name y'know. By the way, she likes the blanket! Looks good with her.
He's just embarrassed about having to say Girlgoop with a straight face when he was mad at me ^_^
Ain't confirming or denying.
...This does make me feel... more comfortable, though. Thank you a lot. I'll go put up the flag.

What was it like being able to talk with Jupetta for the first time?
... You know, thinking about it, she was never a very chatty Pokemon. Never really had a lot to say.
It was wonderful to be able to properly understand her, however! With what little conversation we did have, anyway.

Delibird Delivery! Well- it's a Banette dressed as a Delibird teleporting in with a package, but close enough. After dropping off the package, she wanders off to see the various Misdreavus and Mismagius before teleporting back home.
In the package is a couple of Ghost tera shards, roughly fashioned into a suncatcher. There's also a seemingly homemade three-pack of horror movies! They all seem to be actually scary, too. One is an 80's slasher called "Haunt Nothing", about a person so paranoid about ghosts draining the vitality of the townsfolk that he starts killing people off just to deprive the ghosts. The second is a more psychological thriller called "Come Back From Right Here," about a man who believes his loving wife is dead. The third is a Kaiju film called "Once Upon A Never," about a rich person trying to use the mass death to get rich.
Attached to the package is a note, from @uncle-dusknoir's Basil, reading:
"i just realized i entirely forgot to send you something for the holiday! serves me for only getting my shit together at 2 am. hope you had a good holiday"
"Oh!" Jess hadn't been expecting any deliveries, let alone a present. "If I'd known I'd have visitors, I would have cleaned up a bit." This was mostly a joke. A lie. No way Jess had the energy to clean after socializing with xir boisterous family for 5 hours.
But the visitor was here, and the present was here too. Jess accepted the package with a sort of starry-eyed smile, shock and wonder lighting up, and curiosity could not be denied!
Xe grabbed scissors from a nearby shelf and opened the gifts. The glittering crystals were unfamiliar, but Jess recognized a handcrafted item when xe saw it, and was already wondering which window to hang it in. And the movies, well those sounded like a great break from all the holiday warm-fuzzies!
To Jupetta: "I love it, I love all of it! Please give your trainer my deepest thanks, and please accept my compliments on your costume. You're absolutely adorable."
(When she wandered off and found the Alolan Mismagius, he'd appraise her festive outfit with a festive carol of approval, and the Mimikyu would chirp their agreement.)
Mistress the Mismagius was, as ever, hovering by Jess's shoulder, and xe asked her, "Which one should we watch first?"
She looked at the cases, pointing to "Haunt Nothing". (She was mostly going by the pictures; she may have been able to speak a word or two of English, but she still couldn't read!) But Jess didn't respond, so she looked up, and muttered a questioning note.
"It's just..." Xir gaze was distant. "I didn't expect to get anything. But two people sent me gifts for a holiday I've only ever 'celebrated' out of obligation to my family." Xe spent another moment in thought... and then smiled up at the ghost. "I'll have to find some way to thank them. I already missed Basil's birthday, but do you think we can divine someone else's...?"
