Been seeing a trend lately, so
*Non-canon ships in shounen, action, non-BL/GL, etc.
[Reblog to escape containment, but please don't put down one type of media for the other]

I was thinking that Crunchyroll is a really bad site for kids anime because it lacks any good age filters or categories but now that I'm browsing the site it's just dogshit for anime fans in general imo??
Tumblr media
this is the genre tags we have, it's extremely small and general tbh The shows also aren't properly tagged all the time so you might click on something and not see it in there because it wasn't tagged.
For example A Sign of Affection is tagged with "Romance" ONLY. so you can't find it in the shojo tag at all. The way they're defined is up to god as well because they have shows that aren't shojo under the shojo tag and whether or not a show even gets tagged with it seems based on if they remember it exists cuz you might argue maybe My Love Story isn't tagged shojo cuz the protag is male and there's a misconception that shojo = female protag, but Super Lovers is a BL and it IS in there.
It's not based on the magazines they ran in (Skip and Loafer is under shojo but ran in a seinen magazine) and it's not based on the protagonist's gender because Super Lover's is a BL and tagged shojo, and its not even based on like, whether or not the demographic is female regardless of if it's magazine (Precure is a girls anime first series and IS tagged shojo but Brother's Conflict targets girls as well and ISN'T tagged as shojo.)
Under shojo is a subcategory for magical girls which you already see a large glaringly obvious problem here right off the bat, only the very first precure is even in it.
Tumblr media
Since MG is a subcategory of "shojo" it means that any non-shojo magical girls aren't in it, not that it matters since it's utterly lacking in shojo magical girls as well, this is NOT their only selections, they have for shojo magical girls, they have a bunch of Precure of course, Creamy Mami, Fancy Lala, Minky Momo, a few Pretty series shows, and Acro Trip off the top of my head.
Magical Girl IMO shouldnt be a subcategory at all, it should be it's own genre category and they should include everything under the umbrella in there regardless of demographic and then have subcategories such as shojo, ecchi, or idol underneath THAT. Madoka, Spec-ops Asuka, and Boueibu SHOULD be possible to locate under the same category as Sailor Moon and not just by digging through a massive generic tag like "Fantasy"
Mecha is a similar problem where it's a sub category under Sci-fi instead of it's own genre tag, I do think Mecha makes sense as subtag way more than MG does and at least it has a healthy amount of shows in its subcategory but it really should be it's own thing with it's own subtags, doesn't have to be just like, super and real robot it could be for stuff like whether it has heavy romance or the settings like if the battles primarily are in space like Gundam 79 vs in a fantasy isekai world like Escaflowne.
There isn't a tag for BL or Yuri at all, Super Lovers like I mentioned before is tagged as Shojo but Junjou Romantica is tagged as Drama and Romance and Love Stage is only tagged with Romance.
These shows are all way too hard to find if you don't know where to look or what to look for, and a fan who wants to find something new to watch will have little luck since their favorite genres either don't exist or aren't tagged properly, you can't really search unless the genre is in the name and you still get irrelevant shows in the search. So looking for "Yuri" gets you "Yuri on Ice" and not Strawberry Panic, and the "more like this" carousel is hit or miss on if it shows anything relevant. I saw Quintessential Quintuplets and Rent-A-Girlfriend under the recommendations for Citrus and I imagine anyone watching infamous yuri anime Citrus is not interested in a het harem with a male lead or whatever the fuck is going on with rent a girlfriend.
like its one thing imo for Hulu and Netflix to just slap a bunch of anime under one tag and call it a day but a site targeted specifically toward nerds that's trying to be THEE one stop spot for all things anime and japanese media? this is fucking embarrassing.

I've read like. Almost all yaoi that was popular in 2010-2015 (love stage and junjou romantica among them, which are very popular and very That™ yaoi yknow), you cannot get more embarrassing than that. Now you have freedom to spill it out
joking, if you don't wanna you don't wanna, but like. did you enjoy it? there's plenty of cool yaoi out there, for that it's a specific genre it's still very broad
It's funny that you should mention Junjou romantica are you by chance familiar with its sister

Said it on the twits, but wanna mention it here. Viv writes like a fanfiction Fujoshi. She utilizes tropes as her story, not as components of a story. The tropes tell her audience what they are supposed to think and feel about the story. And this really does remind me of the Killing Stalking fandom.
The creator of Killing Stalking never once meant for the story to be a romance. The main bishonen top is actually sexually assaults and abuses the uwu uke bottom, but that actually is how the seme realizes he's gay and/or in love with the uke or vice versa where being SA is how the uke falls in love with and/or realizes they are gay for the seme (trope from NO MONEY, Love Stage, Dakaichi, Junjou Romantica, etc).
Except in Killing Stalking, Sangwoo isn't gay, doesn't have his gay epiphany and is actually a straight male performing SA against another man due to his own psychosexual hangups about his mother. Actually acknowledging the fact that straight men also SA other men, usually homosexual men, as a form of torture.
But it also showed how this primarily female demographic dehumanized gay men, normalizing abuse and sexual assault as a pathway to sexual actualization or relationship building. The fact that the audience didn't authentically engage with the material but heavily relied on the identification of familiar tropes to direct the story for them. That the idea of abuse in these dynamics was romanticized as some kind of tortured love rather than the legitimate danger it was depicted as.
We know Viv is part of this demographic. These sort of tropes are littered all over HB and it's sort of a repeat cycle where the fandom just turns off their brains instead of thinking about the story. But I'll be honest, Killing Stalking wasn't the most refined subversion. The tropes were obvious where they were played and came off more confusing than as a criticism. I remember thinking how the story both depicted this situation as extremely fucked up only for the trope language to seem to try and justify it. Like Bum being assaulted by a family member and so the situation (through trope language) felt like the creator was trying to say that Sangwoo was somehow the better option after giving Bum basic human decencies between the torture.
It isn't what they meant to say, but there needed to be some more narrative clarification for the subversion to be more clear.
And the thing is, I absolutely hate the term fujoshi. Or rather, I hate the way it's so often used to demonize girls, especially younger ones, for being into something guys tend to get a pass on.
The thing is, even at our most cringe, even while gobbling down yaoi bodice rippers left and right, I feel like most of us always had some awareness that it wasn't...good. Like, this was not okay, this wasn't something that should be emulated in real life.
I don't know. I feel like we're losing that.

Fran. Fran. Tf is boy yuri
Short, funny answer: yuri but with boys
Real answer: usually real yuri deals with deeper concepts and more dramatic “fate of the world/soulmate” themes like madoka magica or TLOK while yaoi is nothing but baseless horny fodder, ie love stage/junjou romantica…. Which is why komahina would be boy yuri while something like Citrus would be girl yaoi. Do you understand?

I’m reading “The Tyrant Falls In Love” (恋する暴君, Koisuru Bōkun) and
Man, those BL/ Yaoi from the 2000’s really were just built different, huh?
Which isn’t a good thing,
there are way too many rape/ blackmail/ coercive rape yaoi from back in the day
I’m not shaming anyone, I’m proship and don’t necessarily judge
But as someone who was coercively raped, it does leave a bad taste to remember that so many BL/ Yaoi from “back in the day” actually centered around this kind of stuff
Me finding out about the German Dub of Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi is what made me look up other Yaoi OVAs and manga from that “era”, such as
Finder (ファインダーシリーズ Faindā Shirīzu)
Love Stage!! (ラブ ステージ Rabu Sutēji)
The Tyrant Falls In Love (恋する暴君, Koisuru Bōkun)
Junjou Romantica (純情ロマンチカ, Junjō Romanchika)

the late 2000s-2010 yaoi artstyle lives in my brain. sometimes izumi lovd stage shows up there and i have to swat him like a fly. but out of sekaiichi hatsukoi, junjou romantica, love stage was the only one i could finish. junjou was terrible because one scene this guy was getting sexually assaulted, the next he was having a casual convo on thd couch with the guy who assaulted him. sekaiichi was. it was mid. i dropped it after i found out theres barely any romantic progress, also it was a bit creepy. love stage was super trashy, but it was good trashy. the s/a was treated kind of seriously which was good but its bl it seems like it has to have at least one s/a scene which sucks. i barely remember anything about it and thats fine it wasnt that good it was just junk food. barely related but yknow what was good? yes no maybe. i also cant remember much but the characters were cute. ok enough yaoi
