woong is from seoul, which is where he spent the first seven (7) years of his life. but then his parents divorced super suddenly & his dad ~kept the house~ so woong, his mom and his four siblings had to find somewhere else to go. they ended up moving to handong-ri on jeju island and settling in with the mom’s parents on their tangerine farm. so....... yeah he moved from seoul to a fuckin village 😭

really spacious house, really spacious property, really pretty property, but woong was not happy at all. he missed seoul & missed his dad, who made no effort to continue being a father figure after the divorce which was also Really Shocking because he was a great dad before that.

but, life goes on. woong was still really young anyway, so he adjusted to the farm life + to jeju. he ended up finding an activity that got him off the farm and that he actually really, really liked, too  —  soccer!!! he was a fast learner, naturally athletic so he did well and his coach had a LOT of faith in him. eventually he formed the plan to return to seoul as an athlete / to train in a big sports center there but y’know... life can’t be that easy.

aka he got badly injured during a match in 2013 / when he was 16. managed to tear BOTH his acl and pcl, so his leg was Fucked. had to get surgery and the whole recovery process (including physical therapy) took a year and some change. very bad time. i would even call it a Horrible time. he didn’t feel like he was good at anything other than soccer so he was like damn... how am i gonna get out of here now?

but he had his height and his subjective good looks going for him 🤪 in 2014, he had more or less recovered as well as he was going to, was kinda tentative about trying soccer again but Wanted to. before he could work up the courage, he was street casted by a dimensions rep. his family clowned him hard for thinking it was real so he kinda went to the audition to prove that he’s not THAT dumb, kinda went bc he needed an excuse to get tf back into a city, man. handong was NOT cutting it for him.

long story short he became a trainee from pure luck (and some natural talent ig), moved to seoul which fucked up his family relationships to some extent bc him leaving was VERY sudden, no one except his oldest sister even knew that he had been planning to leave for sports. assumed he’d stay there forever, thought it was fucked up that he was so quick to run away.

i’m gonna jump ahead to 2021... i wouldn’t really say that he hates unity, but he definitely feels like an outsider looking in. doesn’t have a background in music, so being an idol at all still feels really weird, but especially with unity’s ~experimental~ music.

he’s distant. when he was younger (and even in his earlier idol days), he was nice enough. not loud, but would laugh and play along with others if they spoke to him first, would reach out to others first on occasion. but his company-assigned image is a mix between tsundere & the “assa” / outsider type; detached, fine on his own, a bit cold/mean/aggressive. like vixx’s leo earlier on but a little more toned-down. going with the outsider portion, he also has the clueless/living under a rock vibe going for him, so fans call him caveman woong 💀 it used to be JUST an image but ultimately fucked up his ability to connect with other people so now he’s rly like that most of the time (and really doesn’t keep up with the world LOL) you can talk to him but his social skills are so bad now that he’ll ignore you but not on purpose.... mf just doesn’t know what to say ever bc he’s been told Not To Talk so much.

he isn’t.... necessarily... mean. he can be, but i’d personally say that he’s more of a self-focused, no bullshit type. really lonely guy who doesn’t know how to interact with others anymore. i guess he wants to relearn people skills, but he’s not trying at the moment. content to just float around in his bubble.

known for being really strong/athletic, which has become one of his very few defining characteristics as an idol. he cannot count the times that he’s shown off his strength by holding a note while splitting fruit on variety shows or dribbled soccer balls for extended periods of time. He’s Tired.

a lesser-known skill he shows off sometimes is his ability to identify plants. if you don’t know him as the athletic guy or the cold guy, you probably know him as the nature guy. he has most korea-native plants memorized and he’s currently working on learning exotic plants. one unspoken goal he has is to show off on a show like law of the jungle.

he raises a bunch of different fish / water-dwelling creatures. has three different tanks.

he used to be REALLY secretive about his family, only ever said that he used to live in jeju but never shared details or clarified any speculations. his privacy disappeared when his family started promoting the tangerine farm as “a place full of unity’s woong’s charms” and allowing visitors, which pissed him off SO BAD because they were making money off of HIS labor... and then they realized he has a lot of fans & they couldn’t handle it, so they closed off the farm to the public again. somehow, this made him even more angry.

he doesn’t really do any solo activities and idk if i’m ever going to push him as an individual? idk i might but he’s honestly not that interesting/appealing to anyone other than his stans so i don’t see the company pushing him and he doesn’t have much of a desire to do anything on his own in the public eye, either. lowkey so tired that he kinda wishes he’d just stayed in jeju but at the same time..... knows if he had, he’d still be looking for a way out??? idk he’s just here to promote unity’s ~experimental~ songs and pretend like he has a sense of identity.

Hi @shinakiraarts​ !!! I love you for this question because this is gonna let me indulge in topics I’m really interested in: evolution/sociology/bioethics. So, warning: nerd blabber. and super long.

First fact: You’re right! The Meta Liberation Army is shit. 

The phrase “survival of the fittest” is often attributed to Darwin, but it was actually coined by Herbert Spencer, a philosopher who is now associated with the ideas of Social Darwinism. Basically, he believed that the concept of natural selection should be applied to human society - humans are/should be in an all-out competition in the struggle of life. 

The ‘weak’ got their due in destitution and will/should die off, while the ‘strong’ deserved their wealth and power and will lead civilization to greatness. So, social inequality was the ‘natural way of things’. It was a very attractive idea to rich people already in power, and was often used as rationalization for exploitation, racism, colonialism... a lot of oppressive politics and laws. 

There is never any equality in an ideology that believes in ‘survival of the fittest’ as social policy. It’s intended for there to not be equality.

The real life counterparts - or close to it - of the MLA unfortunately existed (and some continue to exist), and their ideology contributed to countless human right abuses. 

According to Iceman:

“One's rank in society will be directly tied to the strength of one's meta ability. Beyond sheer strength, life has no value.” 

For Social Darwinists, one’s rank in society already signifies their ability and strength. The wealthy were fit, the poor were unfit. And because social stratification wasn’t only due to class/wealth... The idea would come to include: individuals without disabilities were fit, those with disabilities weren’t; Western societies were fit, other non-western cultures weren’t; and one race above all was fit, other races weren’t. 

“[Some] life has no value” was often the conclusion. This would lead to eugenics - making sure only the ‘right’ people would reproduce - and that turned into policies such as marriage prohibitions, forced sterilization, and euthanasia. The most notorious example is Nazi Germany; but the United States deserve a mention for having a huge movement that influenced the Nazis; Imperial Japan dabbled in it; and many other countries.

Here are the actual facts. Evolution is a law of nature - it’s the change in the characteristics of a populationover time. Natural selection is how evolution occurs - some characteristics that can be passed down from parent to offspring allow the individuals to survive better in a particular environment and reproduce. Because they are able to have kids, who also survive, those characteristics will become common in a population. 

It’s really important to understand that evolution is just change. Evolution has no purpose and no goal and no foresight. There are no ‘higher-evolved’ creatures, there is no endpoint that accumulates into an ‘ultimate being’. Natural selection isn’t picking out the ‘best’ traits - it’s simply that some traits happen to give an advantage in survival in a particular environment and so they are passed on. 

“The gazelle has evolved longer legs to better escape predators” 

is more 

“Gazelles with slightly longer legs hada slightly better chance of surviving to reproductive age, andthus came to dominate the population.”

BTW, ‘fitness’ in a biology context means “an individual’s ability to produce viable offspring”. If Iceman had his balls chopped off before he ever had any kids, he’s not fit anymore. He lost the ‘survival of the fitness’ contest.

A funny and often overlooked thing: the ‘strength’ that the MLA believe in, is subjective. Are we classifying quirks by combat power? Flexibility of usage? Impact on people? And they know that some quirks do better in some environments, and others in other environments, right? Oh, but I have a feeling they’re not generous enough to figure out what quirks are most powerful in what environment.

Iceman is no doubt very powerful and strong right now in Deika City, where he has access to ice, and to water to produce more ice. So what happens when you stick him in a desert, or any other arid place? And put him up against someone who can manipulate sand? 

And what about having a quirk that isn’t ‘strong’, but becomes one when combined with a clever and strategic mind? Mr. Compress’ quirk is odd, not immediately obvious that it can be dangerous; but he’s demonstrated he can toss boulders at cars and rip off limbs. 

Should Iceman be defeated by someone with a small, quiet quirk because he didn’t go to fucking school and learn, idk, physics, and the person did, I guess he deserves to die? 

Or what about a quirk like one that allows a person to be immune to diseases? Not immediately demonstrable? When a plague comes, they’ll be the strongest person in the city. 

A bunch of megalomaniacs with flawed, unsustainable ideas - that’s the MLA. Their society would’ve been shambles.

I wanna talk about the ‘law of the jungle’ the MLA has, in comparison to the League of Friends Villains’ apparent policy of ‘we don’t really care about your quirk, just be loyal and willing to kill and become part of Shigaraki’s harem and we’ll find a way for you to help.’ 

As cruel and driven by ruthless self-interest as humans can be, people can also be so incredibly kind and compassionate. Selfishness may have been a part of human evolution, but so was/is empathy and altruism. 

There is the idea of aggressive cavemen society that weed out the weak - including the ‘deformed’, the old; but archeology also has evidence that early humans and hunter-gatherer groups loved and cared for their disabled, had helped them and each other survive. In some tribes, the old people past reproductive age might be frail and unable to work as much, but they served an essential function: transmitting culture. Watching the children, teaching socialization and language, telling the stories that will be retold again and again. The traits we consider to be ‘human’.

Culling or accommodation. 

Twice - with a paper bag over his head, afraid of getting hurt, was limited in his quirk usage, trying to recover from a traumatic event - was readily recruited into the League of Villains. He - according to himself - wasn’t able to do much, so he helped out in anyway he can, and he became the League’s most loyal member. He was allowed to set his boundaries, allowed to be himself, and allowed to go at things in his own way. 

The MLA wouldn’t have done any of that. Helping, finding alternatives, accepting, nothing like that for Twice. Just look at the MLA’s attempted ‘recruitment’ of Twice - break him down psychologically, force him to use his quirk in the way the leaders would want, probably kill him had he been too troublesome. Instead of succeeding, it backfired on them badly. 

“Embrace your ‘meta-ability’, live as you like, and be free to be themselves” is the supposed values of the MLA. The problem is, they put too much weight on quirks, on training them and using them and judging each other by them. All their focus is on the ability, as if it was a single separate thing - and they forgot to look at the human that ultimately controls that ability.

Anyways! I hope the League are able to reunite and completely wreck these mega-idiots and break Redestro’s stupid L-shaped fingers and steal all their resources!!! Ahhhhh I love the League of Villains!!!

Dragon Ball Z 010

I think I’ve run across a continuity error here.   Following Raditz’s death, a lot of what we’re seeing here is filler, mostly to show what Gohan did while living on his own for six months, and what the other characters were up to in the meantime.   The narrator sort of keeps track of time by stating how much longer until the Saiyans arrive.   I think we’re at eleven months now, instead of a full year.   The point here is that we’ve flashed forward quite a bit.   Gohan now seems to be managing pretty well on his own.   He can climb trees, gather food, and when he runs into dangerous animals, he finds ways to deal with them instead of running away or crying.

However, this is also the episode where Bulma and Krillin locate Yamcha and tell him that he’s been summoned to Kami’s Lookout for training.   The impliction here is that it took them days, maybe weeks to locate Yamcha, despite the fact that Bulma has Raditz’s scouter to detect his ki.

You can make the case that Yamcha was tough to find, because he wasn’t using his full power, but Piccolo was just standing around in Episode 1, and Goku was chilling out with his friends in Episode 2, and Raditz located both of them without any trouble at all.  I would think that, even at rest, Yamcha would appear as a significant blip on the scouter, but maybe lower levels are harder to pick up than higher ones.   Raditz only found Piccolo because he was the strongest signal in a certain range, and he only found Goku once he had moved to Piccolo’s position.   To track down someone like Krillin or Yamcha, you’d have to get even closer to wherever they are.    By the Namek Saga, it seemed like the scouters could find people more easily, but everyone was a lot stronger in the Namek Saga, so that kind of makes sense. 

Anyway, Yamcha’s been playing professional baseball for a while now.   He doesn’t enjoy it much, since his advanced martial arts powers make it too easy for him, but it pays well and he needs to pay the bills.   I’m not sure why he holds the bat that way.    It looks cool, but I’m pretty sure he could hit the ball just as well holding it in any other orientation, so he might as well hold it correctly.    Isn’t there a rule on how you’re supposed to hold it?    I’d look it up, but I really, really hate baseball.   Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure Yamcha is my favorite thing about baseball, and he seems just as bored by it as I am. 

Why does Puar get to sit with him in the dugout?   Because Yamcha wins games, that’s why.   It’s in his contract.   Puar gets to hang out with him at all times.   Also, Puar gets a free stadium hot dog at each game, but someone has to cut it in half because he can’t eat a whole dog by himself.   He saves the other half for lunch the next day.

There’s some baseball rules horseshit in this game, and the coach signals his batter to get hit on purpose just so he can have Yamcha take his place, and that’ll help win the game for him.  This coach looks skeevy as hell.   He looks like Captan Dock from the Red Ribbon Army.   Yamcha looks like he recognizes this guy from an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.  

It doesn’t matter, though, because the pitcher realizes what they’re up to, and so he intentionally hits #12 with the ball, but before Yamcha can bat, they get into a fight over it.

This batter sort of looks like Staff Officer Black with hair.   Not sure if that’s intentional or not.

Yamcha gets all excited because there’s a real, honest-to-goodness fight happening.    He jumps in, but he has to hold back so he won’t hurt anyone, so he mostly just taps people gently and sort of sidesteps attacks.   Honestly, I would think this would be boring for Yamcha as well, but he’s probably so starved for action that this is the best he can do.

It’s only when he senses Krillin’s presence that he genuinely gets interested, and then he realizes that it’s Krillin, and he’s just here to talk.  

But Bulma’s with Krillin, and this brings back all the bad blood between them.    Yamcha stood her up on a date, because he couldn’t afford it, and they’ve been apart ever since.   Is this why Yamcha sought out a high-paying job that he hates?   Was it to salve his wounded pride as a man?  

Bulma gives him the same routine she used during the Red Ribbon Army Saga (which was eleven years ago, btw), but this time Yamcha plays it cool and acts like he’s just as aloof to their relationship as Bulma.  Puar seems to take that pretty hard, because he ships it.

Anyway, it doesn’t really matter how Bulma feels about him, because the deal here is that Yamcha’s going to train with Kami, and I’m pretty sure no one said Bulma could tag along for that.   They’re not going to see each other much for the next year anyway, so what difference does it make if they reconcile?

So he’s back in the Turtle School Orange, and ready to kick some ass.  

Back to Gohan, he’s taken up residence in a cave, where he’s got a fairly decent setup going.   He gathers food, catches fish, and then he takes it all back here, where he builds a fire to cook it all.  It’s like he’s playing Don’t Starve, only for real.   In this particular scene, he’s making some sort of bandage out of a leaf, to deal with an injury he got on his shoulder.   How’d he learn to do that?

Turns out he learned it from Goku, when he skinned his knee once.    I guess Goku knows a lot about making medicine from plants, since he lived out in the middle of nowhere himself as a boy.   Gohan fussed and cried a lot at the time, but he still remembers what his father did to make it.  

Later, he discovers an animal inside the cave with him, and he realizes it’s a dinosaur!   Kind of an old-school, probably-anatomically-incorrect-artist’s-conception of a dinosaur, but this is a cartoon where the king of the world is a dog.   Look at this guy, he’s great.

But the dinosaur is hurt from having a big piece of wood stuck in his flank.   Gohan yanks it out, probably because the dinosaur is too weak to stop him...

Then he patches the wound with the same remedy his father used.   He even says the same reassuring words Goku used on him back then.    This is terrific stuff.

Gohan spends the next few days gathering food for his new dinosaur pal to help him recover.  �� While doing this, he imagines how fun it will be to play with the dinosaur once he’s healthy again.  

Gohan rules.

On his way back, he tests his strength by punching a big rock, but he only hurts his hand, so he decides he’s not that powerful yet.

But the rock cracks after he turns and leaves.   There’s a moral here somewhere.

But when he gets back, he finds his friend under attack by a meat-eating dinosaur, the same one that chased him around in Episode 7.   This time, he stands and fights, but he’s just no match for the guy.   Gohan gets knocked away, and when he finally recovers...

It’s too late.   His friend is dead, eaten by the carnivore dinosaur.  Well, that’s the law of the jungle for you.    The question is: will Gohan be any more effective against the Saiyans when they get here?

Junior also said ‘It’s time to clean up this mess and stop looking like a banana republic’. Why yes son, it is, so off you all pop. Daddy is busy implanting his loyalists in the Pentagon and already thinking of running in 2024 but by then he should either be in prison or in exile on a tiny freezing Scottish island with a one hole golf course where he can still cheat. Seems likely he, family and their backers are planning to make good use of their through the looking glass rabies crazed sheep and continue to destabilize America for the Kremlin. Loved that the orange psychopath tweeted early ‘I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!’ and watched as he demanded all votes be counted...and the more they were, the more he lost by. HILARIOUS.

And his call to arms to ‘Stand back and stand by’ to The Proud Boys, who are not far right Nazi thugs at all no sir. To misuse Hunter S Thompson’s genius for the hundredth time, I hope that this is where the wave (of populist filth Trump has been riding) finally breaks and rolls back. The Vault is beautiful! Even though the moving bridges, just like the floating rocks on Habitat 7, are blatantly copy-pasted from Trespasser.

Drack said the fight was fun. Of course it was -- that was the first time I used Annihilation/Charge/Nova!

Military or science -- how is that even a question? :D

Even back in the trial, I instantly became fond of the Tempest crew, in a way different from the Normandy. Not bound by the blood they spilled together -- but a team of nerds and people taking care of those nerds, pretty much. Feels more like the Enterprise!

What helps is that there's already a net of relationships between everyone -- I was thinking about it when Drack was revealed to be Kesh's father and talked about their problems with Tann and their relationship with Vetra. The Nexus backstory really gives depth to this game.

I didn't expect this, but I actually do like Peebee! Since her first trailer appearance, I've been annoyed with her -- obligatory asari LI, shitty design with a sexualized outfit and eyebrows, manic pixie dream girl-ish image -- but her personality won me over. She's a bit similar to my Ryder, and they clicked instantly -- two young, energetic explorers. And she doesn't seem too quirky so far, just a very extroverted nerd. And she has something nice to say about everyone on the ship!

You know, I've been wishing for a romance with a nerdy but genuinely nice person (unlike a certain elf...) and looks like I have not one but two -- and female! -- options here! :D 

The first flirt option with Peebee is good, the second is not.

The Nexus sidequests are all about intrigue and investigation! Just like the main one about Alec, and the characters' backstories related to the uprising. Nice. I feel like a detective. It really gives the game a unique feel.

I must say, the design is really beautiful, they nailed the intersection of "Alien", "Ancient" and "Powerful" here. Though I'm salty because it's just a sci-fi variation of the ancient elven design from DAI, which means DA4 won't be able to use it probably.

a huge update after a decade

28 October 2017 Dear diary So im damn mad like you have no idea!!! so you know the mackbook I'm typing with is like 9.5m bucks but my dad is paying like 12m bucks. for it!!! Isn’t this just crazy? like what should i do? theres nothing i can do… I feel so bad, i feel crush and betrayed! Its not fair, but what is? it was my first time being this stupid and naive! i love my MacBook, i love everything about it, even know that I'm typing I'm having a time of my life! Srsly this is a dream come true! i never thought ill be here in my life Laying on a kind of couch in a comfy home, all fresh and good.. studying in some good collage and everything!
