‘Need for our own nuclear weapons’: South Korean President Yoon at Harvard

Yoon said acquiring nuclear weapons is more than just a technological problem. It is also a complex political and economic challenge.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol delivered a speech and took questions at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge on Friday where he spoke about the challenges facing his country including the threat of nuclear weapons from neighboring North Korea.

Yoon pointed to a new plan he unveiled with President Joe Biden on Wednesday for intensified nuclear deterrence to counter any North Korean threat.

“If we were to accept nuclear weapons by North Korea then South Korea may have to possess nuclear weapons," Yoon said during a question-and-answer period after his speech at the Kennedy School. "This is not something we want to see happen.”

Yoon went on to say that if North Korea were to use nuclear weapons “the result is quite obvious."

“As long as North Korea recognizes nuclear weapons as a means of survival we have to make sure to deter the usage of such weapons so that the Republic of Korea, our neighboring countries and the entire global community can be protected,” he said through a translator.

The so-called Washington Declaration unveiled Wednesday by Biden and Yoon calls for periodically docking U.S. nuclear-armed submarines in South Korea for the first time in decades, bolstering training between the two countries and more.

Yoon acknowledged that “there is some opinion in our Korean society that due to increasing nuclear missile threats posed by North Korea that we need to acquire our own weapons.”

But he said acquiring nuclear weapons is more than just a technological problem. It is also a complex political and economic challenge.

“I believe that those opinions saying that we need to have our own nuclear arsenal are not considering all these things, all these factors,” he said. “The North Korean nuclear threat is not a faraway threat. It is imminent. It is at our front door. Therefore we need a very practical solution.”

On a lighter note, Yoon acknowledged the cultural inroads South Korea has forged with pop groups like BTS, the television survival drama “Squid Games” and movies like the Academy Award-winning “Parasite,” but declined to take any credit.

“Although I’m at the head of the government, I can’t say that the government has really done much to support that," he said. “It has been 100% the effort from the private sector and the market itself.”

Earlier in the day, Yoon stopped at the Massachusetts Statehouse as he wrapped up his state visit to the United States.

Yoon was greeted on the steps of the historic gold-domed building in Boston just after noon by Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey.

The two walked up the red-carpeted steps and into the front door of the state Capitol while the flag of South Korea fluttered in the breeze on one side of the building's front lawn.

Hong Doo-jung, 25, a public sector worker from Worcester, stood across from the Statehouse with several others protesting what he said was the South Korean president’s stance on unions. Hong could be heard yelling repeatedly “strikebreaker, boo” as the president ascended the stairs with Healey.

Yoon and Healey then sat down for a private lunch.

The stops in Boston and Cambridge come after Yoon visited Washington.

Yoon spoke to a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday and praised the U.S.-South Korea security partnership since the Korean War seven decades ago as “the linchpin safeguarding our freedom, peace and prosperity.”

Biden hosted a state dinner for Yoon and his wife that included big names from politics, business, sports and entertainment including actor Angelina Jolie, home improvement duo Chip and Joanna Gaines, and Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim.

Sinopsis: La familia Taeyang ha estado bajo una maldición de más de 100 años, por la cual la primera esposa del primer hijo de cada generación muere durante la noche de bodas.

Hoy en día, la Corporación Taeyang es el conglomerado más grande de Corea del Sur y su primogénito, Choi Kang Joo (Lee Hong Gi), ya ha sido prometido con la hija de una familia adinerada que depende que este matrimonio se lleve a cabo para que su empresa no caiga en la ruina.

¿Pero qué ocurre cuando la prometida, Jang Yi Kyung (Yang Jin Sung), desaparece de la noche a la mañana?

Mientras su familia busca desesperadamente a Yi Kyung, descubren en un pequeño pueblo pesquero a una chica que luce exactamente igual a ella, por lo que contratan a Na Doo Rim (Yang Jin Sung) para que se haga pasar por ella hasta que encuentren a la verdadera Yi Kyung. Pero cuando la dulce y noble Doo Rim choca con el frío y prepotente Kang Joo, las cosas empiezan a complicarse en este cuento de hadas donde nada es lo que parece y las conspiraciones rodean a todos.

“Bride of the Century” es otra joya que encontré en el video de “kdramas realmente buenos pero poco conocidos”. 

Tiene la dosis perfecta de romance, suspenso y angst (especialmente al final) además de un talentoso cast que incluye al maravillo Lee Hong Gi (FT Island) como protagonista y a la talentosa Yang Jin Sung, misma actriz que fue protagonista en My Unfortunate Boyfriend.

En cuanto a los personajes, mi favorito fue Lee Roo Mi, quien, a pesar de ser la segunda protagonista que nunca obtendría al chico, supo cuando rendirse y para mí eso fue lo más admirable. Por eso Roo Mi no fue pero se convirtió en mi second female lead favorita.

Choi Kang Joo es un personaje que al principio aparenta frialdad, pero no el fondo tiene un lado amable… muy en el fondo porque sus esfuerzos por ser frío sí me molestaron un poco al principio, especialmente por cómo trataba a Yi Kyung. En cuanto a Hong Gi, pues todos conocemos su voz y honestamente no pude evitar recordar a Jeremy de You’re Beautiful jaja, para mí Hong Gi siempre será mi Jeremy.

El personaje que creo que merecía más es Sung Hyuk, el hermano de Yi Kyung. Siempre fue atento y gentil con Na Doo Rim pero obtuvo la peor parte por todo el plan maquiavélico que su mamá y su hermana planearon. Ellas no merecían tener a un hijo y a un hermano (respectivamente) tan bueno como Sung Hyuk.

La química entre los protagonistas estuvo excelente, pero hubiese estado aún mejor si su relación hubiese tomado al menos un  capítulo más para que les creyera y se sintiera un poco más natural el enamoramiento. 

POTENCIAL SPOILER - Comentario sobre el final: Honestamente amé los capítulos finales. Desde el capítulo 12 la historia empezó a tornarse angsty y yo disfruto los kdramas angsty. El final en general fue super bueno, y muy melodramático sobre todo. Llegó un momento en que le gritaba a la pantalla “¿qué es esto?” porque era demasiado triste. Per confíen en mí, termina con un final feliz. 

Curiosidades:

 La casa de Yi Kyung es la misma en donde hacen la sesión de fotos por el compromiso de Esther Lee y el CEO Choi de The Heirs (2013).

El lugar donde Yi Kyung y Kang Joo almuerzan con la abuela materna de Kang Joo en el capítulo 8, es la misma donde Jin Ho y Gae In toman el desayuno en el último capítulo de Personal Taste.

En el minuto 38:40 del capítulo final (16), el corazón que está en la esquina del techo, también aparece en Iron Man como un templo.

Here’s the trailer to hilariously titled Fist and Furious. The film sees South Korea’s top action director,  Jung Doo-hong, in the lead (as well as behind the choreography) and the fights look very similar to his 2006 film, City on Violence. Which you need to see, if you haven’t.

I love a good Korean action film (no, I haven’t seen The Berlin File yet) so I’m really looking forward to this one. Their fight choreography is always so unique.

Short Kdramas/Drama Special/Web Drama

Part 1

From time to time I go through the well-known "drama hangover". Even if I try to balance my backlog, don't start too many dramas with diversified stories at the same time, even if I choose only one favorite to follow... it doesn't matter, the routine will run over all my plans and I end up not having the courage or the will to watch anything. Usually when this kind of thing happens, I look for short dramas, with plots that I don't need to think too much, just watch, smile, fall in love and that's it, move on. So I remembered to list these short dramas I've seen and give my recommendations.

Splash Splash Love

Splash Splash Love, the 2015 minidrama with only 2 episodes made me so immensely happy. The story is about a high school student Jang Dan-bi (Kim Seul Gi). Running away from a maths test she finds herself in a playground. Unconsciously, she goes into a puddle and is suddenly transported to the Joseon period. There she meets King Lee-do (Yoon Doo-joon). After the Rain

Kim Kang Woo is my soft spot and this 2 episode drama special seemed to call to me. And good thing too because this show is excellent. This is a comedic human drama about Bong Gil who is forty years old, single and tired of taking care of his 90 year old father. My review here.

The Reason I'm Getting Married

Two very good reasons to check out this drama - Song Jun Ho and Hong Jong Hyun. 😍 The story is about a woman (Park Hee Bon) who is about to marry her long-time boyfriend and meets a friend from the past who has a crush on her. My review here.

Came to me and Became a Star

This story is about Gang Seok (Kim Ji Suk) and Ha Jin (Jung So Min). Both are struggling to stay afloat in life when they meet and fall in love. Review here.

Review Notebook of My Embarrassing Days

Another KBS Drama Special starring Jeon So-min and Park Sung-hoon. Do Do-Hye (Jeon So-Min) is a mathematics teacher and has an overly honest personality, which makes her face embarrassing moments. She keeps a diary where she writes down all these embarrassing moments and reflects on herself. My review here.

Handmade Love

Because this web drama has Lee Soo Hyuk as the lead actor, I had to go see what it was all about. This is about Woven (Lee Soo Hyuk) who is a god who sinned by touching the coat of a goddess and his punishment is to live on Earth and make clothes that cure humans of their sadness.

I think Lee Soo Hyuk is perfect for the role of a god with that perfect elegance and ethereal looks. And I want to thank whoever thought he should wear high collars and fluffy pullovers. ❤️

The first thing that struck me was the luxurious appearance of the small shop. The clothes were beautiful and the furniture looked wonderful and magical.

I liked the stories of the humans he had to heal as they seemed solid and with good messages but I also felt they were rushed, maybe because it was only 8 episodes. So the concept was very cute but the execution was not very efficient.

The Universe's Star

"The Universe's Star" is written and directed by Kim Ji Hyun, known for "Splash Splash Love". That, and having my beloved Suho/Kim Jun Myeon in the cast made me want to watch this drama. This is the love story between a talented singer-songwriter Woo Joo (Kim Jun Myeon) and Byul (Ji Woo), a 19-year-old student who turned into a grim reaper after dying in an accident.

This show has stayed in my heart forever because although it only has 6 half hour episodes, it has more depth than some regular length dramas. Each episode had the ability to make me think and feel, and themes such as the meaning of life, self-worth or appreciating the present came up regularly in my thoughts.

While I can't say that the acting of the main actors was excellent I really enjoyed the OTP arc. The ending is quite emotional and moving and although it left me crying it also left my heart full.

I also have to mention the friendship between Byul and Gakshi (ghost). Though they should be "enemies" a friendship is formed and it is a pleasure to see them together.

Queen of the Ring

It's a cute and romantic mini-series of only 6 half-hour episodes. It's perfect for those who don't have time to devote to an entire series of 16 episodes or more and the content is light and heartfully.

Story is about an ugly girl, Nan Hee (Kim Seul Gi) who one day receives a ring that holds a family secret. Due to the magic ring, she dates Se Gun (Ahn Hyo Seop) who is a handsome guy but has a cold-blooded personality and struggles to see her as his ideal type.

I have a crush on Kim Seul Gi and I thought she gave Nan Hee a spunky personality even though she's so insecure about her physical appearance. And, as always, the emotional moments of this drama were delivered by her in a touching way.

I didn't feel very good about the premise of this drama and the idea of the "ugly girl" liking a boy who was only interested in physical appearances was not winning me over. However, the drama showed me that it had a message behind the original idea that left me quite satisfied with the end result.

Romance Full of Life

It's about In-Sung (Yoon Si Yoon) who is preparing for the exam to become a police officer for 4 years. He fails the exam 8 times, but he still has a positive personality. He then applies for the high paying part-time job which is titled "Full Life Experience". And then his life changes.

Of the Three Colors of Fantasies trilogy, this was the weakest for me. What I liked: I loved Yoon Si Yoon in this drama. I thought he looked adorable as a geek with those chrome glasses and that ruffled hair.

I liked that he turned into some sort of superhero and stopped being a weakling but I hated some of his actions and the way it changed him for the worse.

The OTP was okay.

Two Lights: Relumino

For three years Seo In-Soo (Park Hyung-sik) has been facing partial blindness. Looking for a new leisure activity, he joins a photography club for people with visual limitations. That's when he meets Ahn Soo-Young (Han Ji-min) - a young woman who is part of the group of students.

The story shows the daily struggles each has to go through due to their physical limitations, as well as the bond that is developed between them as they get to know each other better.

This short film is to make people aware of Samsung's Relumino device so the running time of the film is only 30 minutes, so the story is developed quickly but manages to be sweet, sensitive and beautiful.

And I liked the message of hope, inner strength and independence in the midst of darkness.
