3rd Life Designs

Limited Life Designs Here!

Outfit designs for the 3rd Life players! These were very fun to think about and make!

The general theme and vibe I tried to stick with was generic high fantasy and Game of Thrones as that was the atmosphere I got from watching 3rd Life and interacting with fanart.

In order we have:

Desert Duo (Grian and Scar)

Flower Husbands/Hobbits (Scott and Jimmy) plus Joel

Crastle Alliance (Cleo, Bdubs, Impulse and Tango)

Dogwarts (Ren, Martyn, Etho, BigB and Skizz)

(Design detail ramble below)

Design Notes:

Starting with a general overview, I tried to keep everyone’s 3rd Life designs closer to their original/default skins because this was the first season of the Life Series. So a lot of the colours used stick closely to everyone’s default skins colour palettes

Now onto specifics

Every Grian design I make will have his red jumper in there somehow, but for 3rd Life I changed it to a red poncho with embroidery because he would absolutely boil in the desert if he wore his jumper

Jokes aside, he has boxer wraps around his hands to just hint at the finale duel in the cactus ring

Scar’s hat has Grian’s feathers on it as decoration, just to tie the two together more

His wheelchair and crutch also feature the colours of Pizza (the llama) and their banner

Scott and Jimmy had the most drastic design change because I had a very specific vision for their designs as I wanted to lean into a cozy and homely design for both of them

So therefore both have a lot of patchwork elements in their designs

Scott’s cloak is meant to look both quilted and patched together

Jimmy doesn’t have any canary features here because in my headcanon, he gains his feathers after his first death in 3rd life and after his second death, his ears fully morph into the canary wings I usually draw him with. He gains his back wings after his final death so he wakes up in Last Life suddenly with wings

Jimmy’s design is the most drastically different because I don’t want to draw him in his superhero skin, but I tried to keep elements of it with the large patchwork S

Joel’s design is meant to be a cross between a generic fairytale huntsman and a witch, I wanted him to feel like a “mysterious man in the woods” because he operated solo in 3rd Life and had a bunch of wolves

Cleo and Bdubs are meant to look like scrap collectors who are also knights, I gave Bdubs plant elements in his design to match him with Cleo

Impulse is meant to be wearing a lot of leather and the capital “I” on his default skin is represented by the sun-ray like patterns on the cloak

I wanted to Tango to look like a blacksmith/engineer because he made “Dare To Flare” in 3rd Life, I also gave him battered dragonfly wings to suggest that he’s some kind of fae creature in this season

Dogwarts time! Ren and Martyn are both in very Tudor era inspired clothes because I think that time period’s clothes fit their theme in 3rd Life

Etho is meant to be an oni here and I wanted him to have a very samurai inspired design, the character on his chest plate translates to “dog” in order to link him to “Dogwarts”

Both BigB and Skizz are meant to be very soldier like with their designs

BigB has some cookie elements and Skizz has a lot of angel elements, they both wear the Dogwarts banner around their waist just to link the Dogwarts group together

Thy Graphics

A graphics card for the Cactus directly patterned after the OSI-440, with a few modernizations and optimizations.

I've replaced the eight 2102 SRAM chips with a pair of 2114s. I've also swapped the 2513 character generator ROM with a 2816 EEPROM which gives me not only lower case letters, but pseudo-graphical characters not unlike PETSCII. I've re-implemented the address select logic using modern parts (thank you 74688), and swapped the open-collector NAND gate based video/sync combiner circuit with one I copied from a PET video combiner circuit using 4066 analog switches. I didn't like how vague the delay taps were described, so I added in some jumpers to let the user pick their delay timing.

And hooo boy this had some motherfucking BUGS in it.

Vertical sync polarity was backwards.

Video pixel data was inverted too.

In fact, so were the DIP switches for the address select.

I also got half of the 74123 resistor/capacitor inputs backwards due to not paying attention to the idiosyncrasies of the symbols in my old version of KiCAD.

Oh, and the character ROM I stole from my OSI-540B replica has inverted bit order, so the characters looked backwards.

Every single problem I had was due to something being backwards.

Nothing a little debugging can't fix. Took about 7 hours of tired stumbling with help from friends in the retrotech crew to figure out all the little faults and work around them, but in the end...

It works! It fucking works! The Cactus has video! I made a fucking video card from scratch! I didn't use any dedicated video chipsets or FPGAs or microcontrollers or CRTCs or any of that shit. I didn't make VGA, I made composite video.

All 24x24 usable characters on screen in monochrome goodness from this tiny little PCB. Now onto the Rev B design!

headcanons - asa emory with a knitting/sewing spouse!reader

(p.s. the reader does not know about the collector, just to make it extra sneaky beaky)

He has a hand in a few "sewing" techniques himself, so whether this is something shared with him early on or all the way until after your marriage is well underway, he's smitten by it all the same. Everyone needs a hobby, after all.

Just sitting together, after another night where university work had kept him late, the two of you popping all personal bubbles in a way where you can still work and he decompresses. Sometimes talking, sometimes just finding a good cuddle position to make it work. I like the rowboat position, sitting between his legs and both of you splayed on the couch in pajamas while he reads, a hand around your waist and staying out the way as you work.

The tokens for him, a scarf with your best attempt at a centipede down the middle, gloves with little pillbugs on them since they're easier, etc. ... he only wears them to work, preserving them the best he can/saving them for when it's utterly cold outside, etc.

The one time he's talkative with coworkers is when they ask about the garments, and he loves to simply state with big, thoughtful eyes back down on the scarf/gloves/etc.:"My [wife/husband/spouse] made them, [he's/she's/they're]great with the needle work."

The sewing into the tags is something you start to do one year in secret, maybe for Valentine's Day just to show the care you feel alongside the usual date/gifts/etc. for whenever he sees it next.

You think you did something wrong with the way he comes home maybe months after, holding his jacket out to you with a bright green ASA stitched in the tag. "When did this start, my sweet!?" He's embarrassed, elated, just head over heels at a small detail getting past him for so long, and that is when you start noticing any new piece of clothing with a tag missing its ASA routinely left out after laundry.

You see a balaclava in one of your sewing workbooks, joke to him about making him one in assumption he wouldn't want to look ready to rob a bank during the Winter. He doesn't find it funny, and the next day you find an abundance of black yarn and fabrics in your stockpile, whatever he remembers it needing. If that's what the husband wants, I meannn...

He wears it under the Collector mask during the colder months, the colder jobs even. Some spots in the hotel have to be a little bit cold to preserve what he has going on in there.

Some of his victims have your name sewn onto them just because he wants to know how to do it, too. The ones that he doesn't leave to be found, anyways. Someone's still got a widdle crush after all this time. :)

as i promised: something i drew a while back

i got very attached to scavs i found SO now they're ocs i don't care.... they're a part of a tribe of scavengers using 'pearl language' - different pearls can mean different things when scratched carefully, when they are differently-coloured, when they are mixed in a specific way (you can think flower language) the tribe also uses pearls to indicate their names, scratching them on pearls and hanging them on their necks. i assure you a lot of iterators and scavengers alike could say they're really just ruining those pearls...

all three of them come from metropolis, with grasshopper being older than leap and collector. very unfortunately, she is the only one of them to witness the raging scarlet slugcat in action.

grasshopper is the best of them in combat and an incredible jumper, leap is the fastest one of them and collector has a veeery specific love for collecting spears, but not using them. you can always trust him to have at least one on him if you need one.

i tried to come up with symbols for their names and i am really sorry if they're bad!!

I walked the dusty New Mexico wilds off to the river to get some water the rains of my horse in hand, no point wasting the little water we had in Labelle just to water my garden. So I loaded my horse and headed off, and of course, I had barely gotten halfway through LaBelle when I had gathered myself a little tag along. But I couldn't blame him, Bill was back in town with is a rarity meaning whitey finally had some time to do as he wanted which effectively meant until Bill heads off on another adventure, I have myself a little lost puppy following me everywhere I go. 

He had his own horses' reins in hand as we walked together chatting about La belle Business, the only other sound was the swish of the grass and the bell on my horse buttercup reins, 

"I don't know how someone with such delicate ears can stand such a racket."

"Delicate ears?" 

"I woulda thought you wanna protect 'em" 

"Would I?"

"On account how how pretty they are,"

"Pretty? my ears?"

"I think so,"

Mustache Moonjumper or MU-Jumper (I don't have a name yet lol)

Since in Extended Subcon AU MJ makes a deal with MU that she could have power if she joined him, he takes on her appearance (as opposed to the prince as with the original plot of Subcon). Of course MU takes the deal as she feels powerless after defeat. But Moonjumper has no intention of giving her really anything and after making the deal and she's stuck as he feeds on her sadness in order to gain power.

Often other characters call MU-Jumper "they" or "he", Snatcher tends to say "he" and Moonjumper as he only views him as Moonjumper using someone for personal gain.

For the colors I desaturated them to make him even more out of place as MJ is not from this world and to express a drained appearance from MU.

The star eye replaces the diamonds as it's MU's star badge. This is the eye in which MU can witness the world below but there's not much to see most of the time, but she's aware of the damage MJ is doing.

I didn't want her hair to be on his head cause I didn't like how it looked, so I did something abstract to fit with his design.

As for the shattered half of MJ's face, that's Snatcher's doing. MJ is an old enemy of Subcon who had targeted the king and queen of Subcon and then the princess (Vanessa). After escaping as The Snatcher from his tomb he defeated MJ, permanently damaging his face (before it was a full crescent) and leaving him sealed from the land in the horizon, only able to move on land as a shadow. Before he had a physical form that was his own, but its now gone after Snatcher (which has made Snatcher much weaker due to how much that took).

He only appears as a little moon face shadow on the environment around him without a host to feed on (think like The Collector from TOH).

MJ is also -like in the original- scared of Snatcher.

Also MU-Jumper's squares are her colors (which is seen on here). They appear above people MJ puppets just like in the original.

“To say that he was shocked would’ve been an understatement. In all the years that Evan and his friends had thrown their Halloween parties, not once had anyone showed up in a costume from My Bloody Valentine. Other masked murderers were common; Michael Myers, Pinhead, Ghost Face, The Man, and the occasional Leslie Vernon, but Harry Warden specifically was not something Evan had seen outside of his own television. It wasn’t abnormal to see such care and attention to detail in a costume, especially at a party filled with art students, but seeing that killer in person made Evan reach to catch his own breath.

A voice came out from beneath the mask. It was deep and muffled, slow and practiced, “Happy fucking Valentines Day Rosie.”

Barty, he thought. Always with the theatrics.

“Hmph,” Evan mumbled. There was a quick wave of nausea that crashed over him as Barty stepped into his apartment. It was almost instinctual, a reaction that he often felt when someone new was in his space, but afterwards? Afterwards, Evan could feel nothing except for nostalgia. “Happy Halloween Crouch.”

Barty removed his mouthpiece, two rings hugging the bottom corners of his lips. “Still prefer dark chocolate?” He kept the goggles and miner helmet on, but what caught Evan’s attention more than the piercings, was the fact that Barty had left the top two buttons of his jumper undone. It was an intentional move, Evan knew, since Barty had gotten so used to the clean and composed aura that his father demanded.

A trail of blood stretched beneath the mask, down his neck, over his collarbones, and across his chest. The crimson hue contrasted nicely with his sun-kissed skin, mingling slightly with a few tattoos that Evan couldn’t quite make out. Some appeared to be traditional, while others seemed to follow a more modern take. He wanted to pull back the rest of Barty’s jacket, to look at the art that had been done on his body, to see if the artist had messed up anywhere. Evan wanted to check if there were pieces he recognized, wanted to know if there was ink swirling over Barty’s arms and back.

From an artistic perspective, he told himself. Obviously.”
