When stranded on an uncharted underwater planet, alone and surrounded by hostile lifeforms, there are only two possible outcomes: adapt and survive, or die trying.

Spoilers: For the game Subnautica

Content Warnings: Cursing. Mentions of death and violence. Mentions of drowning and suffocation. Near death experience. Referring to someone as 'it'. Mentions of dehumanization.

Scott gasps for air as he bursts out of the water, hacking as the darkness clouding the edge of his vision slowly disappears. 

That, that was close. Closer than when he originally escaped his own lifepod, and that had been deeper than the one he just investigated. Then again, he hadn’t needed to backtrack 200 meters without a way to replenish his air. Just made a straight shot to the surface. 

He has no one to blame but himself for taking such a foolish risk. But the moment he realized the odd structure below him was a lifepod, there wasn’t a chance in hell he wouldn’t check. Not when there was a chance someone was inside.

There wasn’t. That doesn’t mean he regrets his decision, however. Better to be safe than sorry. Even if his lungs and limbs try to say otherwise. 

Scott coughs one last time before turning toward the Aurora, the ship looking no closer than before. But as he turns in the opposite direction, the island he swam from is nothing more than a blurry outline in the distance. And not for the first time, he thinks it’d be better if he turned around and tried again another day. There’s no telling how much further he can go before his body decides it can’t continue. Especially when he’s pushing his luck having enough air to swim 400 meters in total. 

Not to mention, it’s been quite an eventful day. He nearly had a heart attack meeting his first leviathan. 

No one will know how he got scared by one. If he had spotted it, concluded by its massive size it’d most likely eat him, and proceeded to completely avoid it, he would’ve been fine if someone witnessed his embarrassment. But Scott didn’t do that. Despite the fact they remind him of whales and swim just as slowly, they still managed to sneak up on him. Because he hadn’t realized there was more than one. 

Suffice to say, he’s thankful he first leviathan he encountered wasn’t a carnivore, or else such a stupid mistake would’ve been the death of him. It just proved Scott isn’t cut out for something like this. Though he’d like to meet someone who would flourish after being stranded on an uncharted planet. Unfortunately the only person coming to mind died ten years ago. 

Continue, or go back?

Scott looks between the Aurora and his island. Furrows his eyebrows before diving back under the water to see what’s around. 

For the most part, there’s not much. Hasn’t been his entire way here. And maybe that’s because he didn’t go any deeper than 10 meters, but he’s not tempting fate by going down into the unknown no matter how terrifying it is to see a dark abyss beneath his feet. 

There has to be a shallow area with plenty of resources. All the life in this ocean can’t exist only 200 meters or deeper. 

Scott turns his seaglide back on. Continues on his journey toward the Aurora. Sighs in relief when the terrain finally begins to climb up in depth, even starting to see color decorating the landscape. 

With an uncertain look toward the barren wasteland just boarding a sea of grass the color of blood, he angles himself to stay within the shallower biome. Especially as night starts to fall, he’d rather stay where the water is clearer. Make sure he can always see the ground below him and at least 200 meters in every direction. 

So clear, in fact, he spots something faintly glowing a distinct purple color. 

Scott slowly stops above what looks to be a massive hole in the seafloor, unable to help a groan at being unable to escape the fact there will never be solid ground. It’s either a floating island, or a massive cave system carved beneath a plateau. 

It’ll be fine as long as he doesn’t- 

The hair on the back of his neck stands up. Looking up from the entrance to the cave system, he spots something else glowing in the distance. A deeper purple than what’s below. Belonging to something massive, and swimming directly toward him. 

Scott doesn’t hesitate, diving straight down toward the faint glow. Feels his heart skip a beat when he hears a haunting wail. 

Knowing he’s been spotted and aware he’s most likely about to turn into something’s dinner, he maneuvers away from the cave that might be big enough for it to follow through, aiming toward a rock spire instead. One with openings blocked by jellyfish twice his size. There’s a possibility he’ll get stung, but he’ll take that over being ripped to shreds. 

He can feel it pass almost directly overhead as a current almost knocks him off course. Finds himself holding his breath as he’s only ten feet away. Five. One.

Scott braces himself as he dives through the narrow space between the glowing stingers, slamming into the rock when he couldn’t stop his momentum in time. Sharp pain erupts in his shoulder from the harsh impact, eliciting a hiss as he tries to keep it from getting jostled. To be honest, he’s a little worried it might be dislocated. But he didn’t get stung, all his limbs are completely intact, and he’s safe. 

His escape doesn’t go unnoticed. Not when the rock suddenly shakes, almost as if something rammed into it. Nothing crumbles, though, just bits of dust getting knocked from the ceiling. Meaning it can’t get to him through brute force. 

Thank God.

“Shit.” 

Scott feels his brain restart as he tries to process what he just heard. “Did you just speak common?” 

There’s no response. Of course there’s no response he’s in shock. He’s been completely alone for a month, barely just escaped with his life, and currently in pain. If there was ever a time for his mind to try and make him feel better about his situation, it’d be now. Now, and in the form of the thing that just tried to eat him talking in standard common. 

Look, he didn’t go to medical school. But that’s the only thing that makes sense. Because some sea creature on an uncharted ocean planet couldn’t possibly- 

“Are you dead?” 

Scott’s mouth drops open as the voice seems to echo through the small cavern. Seems to have a presence of its own. Definitely not part of his imagination. Something’s actually speaking in common. 

Staring at the jellyfish, he slowly moves toward the opening where a large shadow is waiting. Carefully peers through without getting too close to the stingers to figure out just what had chased him. 

He sees wing-like extensions spanning several feet. A transparent segmented tail coiled up tightly. Several glowing yellow eyes. And then there’s the head and torso that are distinctly human, the only difference is the size and deep purple color, even tied back long hair. 

Suddenly, it smiles, revealing rows of sharp teeth long enough to skewer him. “Oh good, you’re alive.” 

Scott stumbles back with a curse, gasping for air when it becomes clear he wasn’t imagining things. The leviathan currently keeping him trapped is speaking common. Forget how terrifying his imagination can get, nothing would’ve prepared him for getting taunted before getting eaten by something that looks human. 

There’s got to be a way he can escape. 

Checking his HUD, Scott feels his heart drop at his oxygen quickly depleting. Looks around to possibly find another opening. A tunnel that leads him down to the cave system so he can slip away unnoticed. An abandoned but full air tank by some miracle. 

“You’re going to die if you stay in there.” 

“Oh, so you’re a fortune teller?” Scott snaps, unable to help himself with how smug it sounds. “Want to give me a tarot reading on how I’ll die today?” 

“That’s a new one,” the rumbling voice muses. Like it’s toying with him. How could his day get any worse. “I just know you’re running out of air.” 

God damn it.

Scott turns back to the small cavern around him. Feels dread creep in that he has to chose between drowning, or being eaten. Never did he think that would be an ultimatum. 

The sound of a pop has him turning back toward the entrance. Stares as he tries to comprehend what he’s seeing as a bubble rises from the ground before bursting when it hits the ceiling. Followed by three more. 

Don’t tell him those are air bubbles. 

Swimming above the coral they’re originating from, he gasps as the bubble bursts around him with the sound of his tank refilling. It happens again, and then a third time, giving him enough air to last for a few more minutes. Breathes a sigh of relief as three more bursts come. At least that takes care of him running out of oxygen. 

“Are you dead, yet?” 

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” Scott growls. It’s bad enough he’s trapped here, does it really need to mock him? “To know I drowned if you couldn’t be the one to kill me.” 

“I never said I was going to kill you,” is said so casually it takes a moment for the words to register. 

Scott sputters. “Oh, I’m sorry. Was I supposed to think getting trapped in here was a friendly greeting?” 

There’s a deep laugh that makes the cavern shake. It prompts Scott to carefully look out, unsure if that’s a good or bad sign. He spots the leviathan sitting exactly where he left it, nothing but amusement decorating its face. 

Wonderful. If he’s not seen as a meal, he’s seen as entertainment. “Technically you trapped yourself in there.” 

“Well I don’t see you moving anytime soon.” 

The towering being grins. “No. But, again, never said I was going to kill you.” 

No, it never did, but it doesn’t have to. Not when it’s obvious it’s happy to play the waiting game for its prey to become desperate, or think it has a shot to escape. 

Scott’s not going to take his chances. He has a steady supply of air, extra food stored, and protection to keep anything coming after him less it gets stung. He can wait here as long as needed. He won’t be giving anything the satisfaction of making him into a meal. Especially not the smug leviathan only an arm’s reach away. 

“Are you dead in there?” 

He doesn’t raise to the bait, staying out of sight in the hopes it assumes he did drown and decides to hunt something else. 

A yell escapes when something collides with the rock, covering his head to keep debris from knocking him unconscious. Hissing when his bruised shoulder manages to take the brunt of it. “This feels a lot like you’re trying to kill me!” 

“I just wanted to make sure you’re alive,” the leviathan says, sounding like it’s smiling. “Not my fault you didn’t answer.” 

At this rate, Scott is going to die by a heart attack before drowning or being dismembered. He doesn’t know whether to feel accomplished or insulted by the fact. 

To keep the possibility of getting crushed by crumbling rock from happening again, he carefully positions himself so his air tank continues to be filled at the same time he sits within eyesight of the leviathan. Sends a scathing glare at its smirk. Refuses to acknowledge it any further as he looks through his pack to see if there’s anything he could possibly use to get out of this alive. 

There’s nothing that can help. He doesn’t even have a scanner to try and see if there are any weaknesses. The best he can do is pray and wait. At least the leviathan seems happy to silently watch instead of continue its sadistic taunts. 

Until it hums in thought. “Got any peepers with you?” 

"No."

It was almost a full three hours later when they finally hung up the phone. Julie wasn’t exactly surprised by how long it took to explain the entire situation to all parties, but she was exhausted. The constant need to sort out who had been told what parts of the story took more power than her brain apparently had.

For overheating monkeys mainly seek shade staying under trees , increase respiration (panting), seeking water sources. Also some species might shed for a thinner coat during summer. Sweating is an exclusively human thing and why humans have been so successful humans are persistent hunters. We would often follow herds for miles waiting for them to tire and overheat while sweating keeps us perfectly cool. Humans are also the only animal to blush. Lol Again no hate love the comic I love me some Flustered blushing gay monkeys. I just have the animal autism and wanted to info dump.

So. in the AU he's 21 y/o. Meaning that when he arrived to Pigsy door they saw him and went "yeah, he looks around 2/3" and from then they counted on. Buut there's also the thing that he looks a little younger than that age. I wont say anything else.

But I have a "thing" for characters discovering they are actually a different species and slowly gaining new/different body features bc of that, so when I saw him flickering at the end of s4 I flew to a different universe. Literally the whole reason this AU exist is because I would die for this trope

Macaque is drama queen so of course he would wear a trenchvoat during fall. plus he's old inside and outside bc of all Wukong bullshit. Wukong is your friendly neighbour who lives in a sketchy house and survives on peach sodas and chips (oh wait that's just canon Wukong.)

Honestly, both Wukong and Mac/Mihou (like i usually call him) does not care about clothes, if they feel comfortable with them, be it for woman or man, they'll wear it, especially Wukong though, I feel like he'd act like a famous diva in a on a runway showcasing new high-class clothes from Victoria Secret, Channel, or something, whilst Mac is much more discreet but not too far from that too. And considering Wukong was wearing WOMAN clothes when he was in the brotherhood in the season 4 lmk flashback, it just made me believe in that headcanon even more :) Also, I am really loving your au, it's just so perfect the way you develop every character slow and patiently, keeping their personalities untouched, not changing but instead expanding and showing them a bit more, how they are really trying to improve (Wukong and Mihou in this case) and how satisfying it is to see. I always rush to see the new updates you post about the Biodads au every time i see too, and honestly, one of the 5 best au's ever, you draw so good too, it's adorable! Courtnapping rooms are made specifically for the courted one, so they are all different. Basically, the room should include everything the courted person would need to live comfortable and also a collection of things they like / to pass the time /love.

It must show that the person courtnapping them is able to provide, care and protect for them. And also knows what makes them happy.

So it can be a huge castle full of jewerly and elegant clothes/ornaments or just a cozy room with some chips and video games.

I think when he's relaxed, the hair is just- a little bit warm, then with his feelings and emotion it can go up to a bigillion degrees, so it's not harmful as long as he can control it.
