man, i just keep thinking to that one part in fate/extra where julius is beaten for the first time in the holy grail war and he just... refuses to die. all he can manage while kneeling over the ground in agony as he faces his death, while his servant simply tells him to accept his demise, is to absolutely reject with a furious and determined “i! can’t! die here!” 

that refusal to give in, that violent, dignified affirmation of life as he hacks into the system to buy himself more time as a holographic wraith filled with a grudge cut real deep into me. there’s something that just fucks me up about characters in the verge of death simply refusing to die and while nasu does it in literally every single one of his works so far i eat it up every time. there is just something extremely compelling about that wrathful, blazing determination to survive no matter what. in julius’s case specifically, it was the one emotion he was allowed to show, the one selfish desire he was allowed to have after a lifetime of being a cold killing machine for someone else’s glory (heh), for someone else’s sake, which was a role forced upon him that deprived him of a happy childhood and robbed him of his future completely. all his life julius’s entire purpose was to die for leo’s ascension as the ruler of humanity, to be nothing but a stepping stone in a hopeless dictatorship. julius refuses to die and becomes a wraith solely for his own sake, to release his own anger and resentment and WIN not because he’s told to but because he wants to LIVE. he wants to live and god fucking help anyone who tries to stop him.

it was his first and most intense humanizing moment second only to his final death near the end of the game where he parts with a smile, comforting hakuno and begging her not to cry for him either as a gesture of genuine kindness or as one final self-deprecating expression of julius considering himself as something not worth crying over (or worse, both). when he dies he dies because he accepts his time has come to and end and it all meant something because in the end he decided to live for himself and therefore he dies on his own terms. for him to so furiously cling to life and then so peacefully accept his death and then ironically become the one thing that would let hakuno beat and kill leo at the summit of the lunar sea is *chef’s kiss* poetic cinema and i love love LOVE fate/extra with my heart and soul for that.

Hi!! Thank you all so much for 400 freaking followers!!!! DAMN time passes by quickly! I look forward to your continued support! 

This time as a thank you present, I’d like to go in a similar direction as I did last time w doing a seiyuu comparison w the Fate series and another anime! Don’t worry it won’t always be like this, I’ll definitely change it up next time!

Today’s comparison is between Fate and Fairy Tail!! FT was one of my og mainstream/long-term series. I watched some of the newest season but dropped it bc I already knew what was going to happen bc I’ve read the manga, but THANK GOD they redid the art and coloration w Clover-works bc the second part looked so bad in so many ways. I noticed these two series also had a lot of characters w same v/as so this time I’ll do a comparison w them!

Note, I’m not going to do repeats like Suwab(a)e, Toriumi, Ishida, etc but there’s still a lot to go around.

Ascension. The process in which Servants in this Grail War could grow stronger, to the point at which they were more powerful then before. 

With many, it was changing them into a form beyond what was normal. 

With some, it was bringing them back to their purest form.

With others... it was wiping away the dirt and grime the world had marked their soul with, and finding what was beneath it all. 

The tattered coat slowly grew out once more, repairing and fixing until it returned to its former glory.

His features, older and weary, began to grow softer. His younger self’s face wasn’t exactly well looked after when it came to his skin, but it was younger, that much was for certain. 

Looking down at his limbs, Assassin pauses for a moment. 

He was... he had always been... 

“Julius Belkisk Harwey... I thought that if I ran from that name, the pain would be easier to bare. Foolish. It did nothing to help, merely bring more misery.”

No words leave his mouth for a moment, the room is filled with a deep intake of breath.  “It was rough on you, wasn’t it? I am truly sorry for that... but... i’m home now, Cana. Thank you for looking after me.”

And while I’m on this whole Fate/Extra topic (which I probably will be until I beat this whole game), Julius Belkisk Harwey deserves, deserved, and will always deserve, better.

aestus: yeah so i watched the two julius episodes dubbed of last encore so imma about to ramble for a while 

as such

MASSIVE LAST ENCORE, FATE EXTRA AND FATE EXTRA CCC SPOILERS!!!

Julius Belkisk Harwey before his second death in Fate Extra is a man who is identified as a monster. He lacks emotions, lacks empathy towards anyone. The only people he is shown to care for are Alicia, who is dead, and Leonardo. He is shown to be a ruthless killer, one who time and time again will slaughter those who stand in his path. 

But, when he is dying for the second time, looking at the face of his killer... 

He sees someone cry for him. Someone who honestly sees his pain and feels sorrow for what he is feeling that moment. 

And he feels something. For the first time in a long time, he feels something that is not hatred or loyalty. 

He finds his first friend. 

Julius :: …that’s right. You didn’t know? You, Hakuno Kishinami, are my only friend. The final light I saw, when I had nothing. That — even if you don’t remember it.

These were some of the final words from Julius in Fate Extra CCC. After betraying the council to work for BB, he reveals he was a traitor to her from the start. He wanted to aid Hakuno, and it cost him his life. Regardless of how you take that, romantic or platonic, Julius cares deeply for Hakuno Kishinami.... 

... after his second death. 

His first death is pained, he screams out and begs not to die.

Because he failed his promise. 

He told Alicia he would protect him. 

And he failed. 

As such, in Last Encore, that is all that can drive him. That hate, that pain of failing to protect his goal. 

We aren’t even ghosts. 

We cannot create anything. 

He spews such curses and hatred at Hakuno, someone who he should be able to understand more then anything? 

But to me, as someone who has been writing Julius for many years now, I feel like it is more then that. More then just that hatred... it’s jealously. 

From the original run of Fate Extra we are shown that Julius hates that Hakuno was able to make it this far, that this talent less mage was able to push through all of this, to beat him... and yet they keep going. This feeling of inferiority, which was forced onto him his entire life through his father and the group he belonged to. Seeing Hakuno succeed where as he failed, when they are so similar... it destroys him on the inside. 

But, there’s more still. All that venom he spews at his enemy, all of those cruel words... they are based in self loathing to me. 

He compares himself to Hakuno in Last Encore, speaking on how they are not even ghosts, they cannot make anything... but continues to mock his existence?

This could all be me looking too deeply into this, over analyzing, but I like to think this was purposeful. That Julius says these due to not only the anger and the jealousy, but also out of self loathing. 

 We are rejects, we shouldn’t be alive. 

When fighting Hakuno for the second time, he speaks on how this world will be his end and says

...you have been fully consumed by sin, no amount of punishment is enough for you. There is no hope for someone like you. 

This is from a man who is already dead? Who enjoys killing the same person over and over again? Or does he even enjoy it, he laughs once or twice... and that is mostly due to there being something off about Hakuno, this not being the one he has killed over and over again. And yet... he knows that Hakuno is not alone. He has both Rin and Nero aiding him, and yet he speaks of there being no hope for him. 

To me, this is all is almost like him speaking into a mirror. 

No gloating. 

No mockery. 

They are one and the same. 

The dead... can’t change a single thing. You’re no exception. All of this filth... it caused my hatred to get so strong it made me nauseous. And soon... you’ll be like I was too! 

These are his last lines. They are almost like him finally saying all of the words that he knew all along, but he had just to perform his duty. The only thing he had left... to kill Hakuno as much as he could before finally failing too. 

He knew he was already consumed by hate. 

It was killing him on the inside. But he had nothing left in him. 

Bonus AHHH content  Hakuno: Ya know, whining about the past is unbecoming.  Julius reaction:

I love this reaction. The eyes basically screaming at him. Once again, I could be looking too deeply, but it’s almost like him saying how dare you talk about me and what I did in such. You shrug off everything that happened just liKE THAT HOW DARE YOU!? 

I know this the episode before but shush this art is just beautiful.

Eyes remained wide open, the blow meant for him was instead taken by his Master.

His Cana. 

His sister. 

It was a wave. Pure unbridled anger and hate. No sound passed his lips, his body was already cut and bruised in several places. But there was noting else left in this body, Cana was already being cared for by several others, all but Shielder focused on the girl instead of the cloak one who stepped away from them.

[Monsters are not allowed homes… I knew that from the fucking start. Yet I fooled myself into thinking that I deserved a second chance. So I did this… but as always… people die for me. The corpses keep on piling up.] 

Weapons screamed out the cry for the man who had long since forgotten how to. Some may even say it sounded like some tormented music, and to the Assassin, that was the best way to describe the screams of his opponents. 

Even as his body was being torn away. 

Even as Cana was brought away from this place.

Not once did his weapons stop. Not once was their cry not heard.

Tamamo: “Caster... been a while since I saw her. She is somewhat of a monster Master, keep your eyes on her while she is near.”
