Gesundheit!
After saying a fond farewell to the mighty oak tree, Algy set off in high spirits, with his magic lantern in his beak, to pursue his quest for the light and warmth which he felt sure could be found somewhere in the heart of the winter darkness.
At first the low November sun continued to shine, but as he rose higher in the sky he noticed that the air on his wings had an icy chill, and he had not travelled all that far before the weather took an increasingly ominous turn, with a brisk wind from the north carrying massive black clouds rapidly towards him.
Deeming it prudent to interrupt his flight and seek shelter, Algy dropped quickly down to the ground as a wave of sleet and snow swept over the sky, blotting out the sun. He made a comfortably soft landing on a patch of long, wet grass, but it had already accumulated a sprinkling of snow with an icy crust, and before long the unaccustomed chill to his tail feathers had an unfortunately predictable effect…
However, although he believed it to be a Wednesday, he doubted whether he could expect any letters, as he had not seen a post bird for quite some time…
If you sneeze on Monday, you sneeze for danger; Sneeze on a Tuesday, kiss a stranger; Sneeze on a Wednesday, sneeze for a letter; Sneeze on a Thursday, something better. Sneeze on a Friday, sneeze for sorrow; Sneeze on a Saturday, joy to-morrow.
[Algy is thinking of a Mother Goose nursery rhyme.]
With special thanks to Algy's friend @wouldwind for inspiration 😉

@giftober 2024: DAY 15 - REFERENCES
Nursery Rhyme is not a true heroic spirit; she is the embodiment of Alice’s feelings projected onto a Reality Marble to create a virtual-servant. She is not a hero in the traditional sense, but the general term for any picture book that managed to manifest itself into a corporeal existence.
In the poem, the line “Let us grant our final wish.” is a reference to a desire of Alice’s that is not from when she was alive, but rather from after her death when she became a ghost.

Humpty Dumpty
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men Couldn’t put Humpty together again.
The 1810 version:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; Threescore men and threescore more, Cannot place Humpty Dumpty as he was before.
The rhyme in different versions dates from the late 1600s. Probably a reference to a high ranking individual.

The rain started in earnest just as the dim afternoon light began to fade into darkness. For the first time in a week or more the wind was getting up, chasing away the dripping blanket of dense Scotch mist that had hung over the landscape for days on end, and replacing with it some much more menacing clouds, which were sweeping in rapidly from the wild Atlantic Ocean.
Algy nestled down into a relatively sheltered nook among the long grasses and ferns, and tucked his magical pumpkin lantern in close under his wing, both to shield it from the weather and to gain the maximum benefit from its glowing warmth. But although the rain was falling all around him, Algy was astonished to find that he was scarcely getting wet at all. Was it possible that the lantern not only provided light and warmth, but could keep him dry as well? It really didn't seem likely, but then, as Algy knew only too well, nothing was ever really quite what it seemed…
What he did know was that he was remarkably comfortable under the circumstances – leaning back happily on the soft grasses, watching the rain, and dreaming of what he would do when it stopped, for there was no doubt that the weather was changing, and Algy was sure that he would soon be able to continue his quest. He chuckled to himself as he hugged his magic lantern ever closer, for he had suddenly remembered a tongue-twister nursery rhyme that he had learned long ago, as a wee fluffy chick… He should certainly be able to weather the weather now 😀
Whether the weather be fine, Or whether the weather be not, Whether the weather be cold, Or whether the weather be hot. We'll weather the weather, Whatever the weather, Whether we like it or not!
