Something I only appreciated on my second run on Disco Elysium is that you can kind of see Kim making his own critical misses and critical hits throughout the game, you're not the only one struggling against the dice.

When you suggest bringing down the hanged man by shooting the rope with Kim's gun, Kim will try the shot, miss on a stationary target at point blank range, and then get flustered and refuse to try that again. It's implied by the narration that of course Kim would have a harder time making the shot, he's a binoclard (wears glasses), you should have offered to do it instead.

However, in the tribunal when the one merc who's actually covered head to toe in the Fairweather 500 armor starts shooting, beating him should be virtually impossible—the armor is impervious to bullets according to the thought cabinet, and the mercs have automatic weapons in a world that still mostly uses primitive guns. But since the merc fires at you—and Kim is literally introduced as the one person who's got your back if the world were to come crashing down right this second—Kim lands a desperate shot right in one of the armor's eye sockets, it's only exposed point. Harry's skills basically go "Holy fucking shit" because they just witnessed Kim beating an Impossible Difficulty 20 check on the same skill (Hand/Eye Coordination) he failed with earlier.
