You didn’t see him. For 5 long years in your new town of Colorado. You became a nanny for a wonderful family, you were paid well, and you were happy. That was until one fateful day. 

When Spencer Reid, Emily Prentiss, Jennifer Jareou, David Rossi, Penelope Garcia, and Luke Alves, showed up at the doorstep of the O’Connor family mansion.

Knock knock knock

“One second!” you shouted, juggling Annaleise, the youngest of the O’Connor children, in your arms as you tried to peel a banana for Xander’s, the second youngest, breakfast. “Xander, stop playing with your porridge, eat it!” You playfully scolded, resulting in a laughing fit from Xander, and the surrounding four children. 

Annaleise was 2, Xander was 3, Jamie was 6, Poppy was 9, Juliet was 14, and Megan was 16. All the kids adored you, you lived with them as their parents went on various business, and pleasure trips. They were typical rich parents who didn’t exactly care about their children, but you did. You cared about them alot and you’d grown to love taking care of them.

“Coming!” You shouted as you bounced Annaleise in your arms and rushed to the front door.

You wished you hadn’t opened it. Then, the world wouldn’t have stood still. Then, you wouldn’t have seen Spencer. You wouldn’t have seen the awful dark rings under his eyes, his sunken and pale skin, the shock in his eyes when you came to the door with a child. “Hello?” 

“Mrs. O’Connor-” David started. 

“I’m not Mrs. O’Connor. She’s on a business trip with Mr. O’Connor,” you explained quickly. Had you not been making eye-contact with David, you would’ve seen how Spencer’s entire body untensed. The small breath of air he didn’t realise he’d been holding left his mouth in a spluttering cough of sorts and Jj had to slap him on the back to stop him from choking on his own spit. 

“My apologies, Y/n how are you?” David had always been kind to you. 

“Fine, I’m good David. Thank you,” you smiled. “I’m the nanny.”

“Do you mind if we come in to ask you some questions?” he asked, flipping over his FBI badge. 

“I wouldn’t mind if you came in but everyone is getting ready for school and this isn’t really an ideal time. Would you like to come back later?” You asked and Emily nodded. 

“That’d be perfect,” she smiled. “It’s good to see you Y/n.”

“You too,” you smiled and went back inside, 5 sets of eyes on you. 

“Who was that?” Megan practically screamed. 

“Old friends,” you lied, rushing back to get everyone’s breakfast plates away, and Annaleise in his chair.

5 voices were speaking over each other, aided by Annaleise’s incoherent babbling and you genuinely had to shout over all of them. 

“Get in the car!” You shouted. “We’re going to be late!” You reminded them. Soon, everyone was springing into action, grabbing their bags and packed lunches, and piling into the car, Megan and Juliet getting into Megan’s car to drive to their high school. You dropped Xander to his Montessori first, then Jamie and Poppy to their grade school. 

All was calm in the car as Annaleise babbled to you from the backseat.

“I can’t tell you anything,” you answered., “I signed an NDA.”

Luke’s eyes narrowed and he sighed. “This is a murder case Ms.-”

“And I will go to prison if I break my NDA. I'm sorry and I really wish I could help you, but I can’t.”

“Y/n, we can get a warrant,” Jj reminded you.

“Jj, I know that. I’d honestly prefer if you did,” you sighed. “What’s this about anyways?”

“Human trafficking,” David answered and you sighed. “When will Mr and Mrs. O'Connor be back from their trip?”

“3 weeks time,” you answered. 

There was a collective eye roll from the entire group. 

“Alright, Spencer stay here with Y/n while we get a warrant to search the house,” Emily ordered and both your faces fell. 

“Emily-” He tried but she gave him a look. One that made you feel that there was no room for arguing. 

“Right,” you stared at the ground, trying to find your footing in this new dynamic. “Hi Spencer.”

“Hi,” he squeaked out.

You sat in silence in the kitchen as Analeise slept in her bassinet in the next room. “Do you want a drink or anything?” You offered. 

“Just some water, please,” he smiled softly. You grabbed a cup out of the drawer and handed him a full glass of water. For the brief split-second where you two were touching, everything felt… different. “How are you?”

“I’m good, how are you?”

“I’m… I’m alright, yeah,” he clearly lied. 

“How’s your mom?” 

“She’s good,” he chuckled. “She misses you.”

You smiled. “Well, you can always tell her that I miss her too.”

Spencer chuckled sadly at your words and nodded. “I will.”

“I like your hair,” you smiled. “It suits you.” 

Spencer hadn't looked in a mirror in what… three weeks? He usually refused to. “Thank you,” he swallowed the lump in his throat. “Y-you look good too.”

“Thank you,” you nodded. 

“I should’ve never snapped at you like that,” he shook his head, trying to keep the multitude of emotions that were threatening to spill over at bay. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s alright. We’re both happy now,” you shrugged. "It was a long time ago-"

“I’m not,” he admitted. “Everyday, I spend my waking moments just thinking about you. Where you went, what you were doing, everything! Anything. And now you’re here in front of me. And I don't know what to do.”

“What do you mean Spencer?” you asked, suddenly the air was turning sour, just like your opinion of him. “You broke up with me.”

“And I wish I hadn’t-”

“But you did Spencer. You did. And I moved to another state to get away from it. And now you’re here, saying all this shit about ‘us’. As if there is an ‘us’ anymore,” you scoffed. “That’s a joke Spencer.��

He nodded, his eyes falling to stare at his dirty, broken converse. You’d gotten him a pair just like these. A red pair, to match the red scarf you’d made him. For his birthday, back when you were just the cool girl he had a huge crush on. Back before you were his. Back before he ruined it all.

“Happy birthday Spencer,” you smiled from your spot on his living room couch. He had been shocked that you’d even shown up, let alone brought him a present for his 25th birthday. “Open it!”

He did. And what he would find inside was a hand-written note (one that he’d treasure forever, with the rest of the notes you’d give him while you were together), a pair of red converse in his size, and a crocheted, chunky scarf that looked warm and comfortable. 

“I know you usually match something in your outfit, so I thought this would be good,” you smiled. “But there’s a gift receipt for the shoes if you don’t like them. The scarf is for keeps though.”

Both of them were for keeps. You were for keeps.

So like, does anyone have any good Beauty and the Beast type movies to recommend? I've seen all four Disney movies (the original, the two DVD sequels, and the live-action remake), Belle (the anime), Blood of Beasts (a low budget Viking movie), Beauty and the Beast (the series starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton), I am Dragon (a Russian movie about a dragon), The Shape of Water (the Del Toro movie that everyone needs to watch at least once in their life), Penelope (Christina Ricci movie where the girl is actually the 'beast'), Corpse Bride (the stop motion musical about a dead woman trying to marry a living man), Warm Bodies (Zombie!Romeo x Survivor!Juliet), Edward Scissorhands (needs no introduction), Bram Stoker's Dracula (the sexy one with Gary Oldman), the Shrek quadrilogy (even if only the first one really fits the mold), and I'm going to include TAU on this list (a movie about a kidnapped girl, a sadistic scientist, and a tortured AI) because you can't convince me that it wasn't a love story.

I love Beauty and the Beast and stories that are similar, so any recommendations are appreciated.

(Also, if you want to count Phantom of the Opera as a Beauty and the Beast story, I've seen the 1943 version, the Robert Englund version, half of the Julian Sands version (it was really bad), and the Gerard Butler musical version.)

See, this is why I keep trying different ways to market my books. This attitude. And it's why my marketing is still all over the place.

Because one of my books is a cutesy one for little kids & for parents to approve of. It's about a baby dragon and found family. It's about finding where you belong and making mistakes along the way, and it's about self-acceptance and self-love. It's about recognising the beauty in being different and realising that actually, looking the same as those around you doesn't necessarily mean you belong with them. Maybe you belong in the place where nobody looks the same as you, but they treat you as their equal, because they don't give a flying fuck if you're a dragon who hops like a bird and flies like a bat and barks like a racoon and headbutts trees like a deer and fishes like a bear and sticks your tongue out like a snake, because that's all you and they love you for you. It's about accepting yourself and your quirks. Yes, it's aimed at queer families and queer kids, and yes, it's aimed at trans kids and trans families. Yes, it's based on how I acted out when I was questioning my gender & denying who I was. Yes it's a paralel of my own experiences because they're the most honest part of myself that I know are the most human experiences a person can have and yes, the best way I know to get that across to kids and families is by dressing it up as a dragon that's abandoned then adopted by a whole forest of queer animals.

But if I say all of that??? Hah. No chance - people scroll past with an eye roll, or they think that's too complicated for a child to understand and turn their nose up at it.

So what do I have to say instead?

"Hey, wanna read a cute story about a little dragon who has always thought he's the only dragon in the whole world, before learning there's a whole land of other dragons and soon learns the value of family and friends when he has to make a very big decision?"

Does it cheapen it? Yes. Does it make me sound like a sales assistant selling reduced sale items that are about to go out of season? Yes.

Does it work? Also yes. Because unless it is about something they are interested in, people do not give attention to long-ass posts.

Meanwhile, my other book is for older teens and adults who read YA, and it's about 2 socialites, 1 with a very public drug addiction & 1 with a future waiting on a silver platter for him to scoop up if he follows in his strict Catholic father's footsteps. It has graphic drug use and implied gay sex scenes & referenced past sex scenes and dozens of sex references. It has pages upon pages of swearing and cussing and anxiety spirals and did I mention the drugs? It's not full of eloquent prose, because one main protagonist spends 95% of his on-page time off his face or in withdrawal, surrounded by other addicts, and the other protagonist is having a crisis over questioning his faith and his sexuality which he's been feeling guilty about for years. And sometimes writing isn't about being eloquent and graceful and poetic; sometimes it's about portraying a character as accurately as possible, and when that character is in his early 20's with everything in his world getting turned on its head while he's off his, that means writing 20 variations of the word fuck across a 250 word spread with different intonation each time.

"But what's it really about?"

It's a book about being newly 20-something and being thrown into the world of adulthood with 0 training, because schools do not teach you how to adult & social media worships youth and surface-level naivity and beauty over information and morals. It's about not knowing shit about anything other than everything you know you don't know shit about, while society rolls its eyes and looks down its nose at you for not magically knowing everything they learned from literal decades of life experience and mistakes that you haven't had the privilege of making yet. It's about love and friendship and toxic patterns and toxic relationships and breaking the cycle of abuse. It's about discovering and exploring yourself. It's about rediscovering the world around you. It's about reevaluating your entire fucking life and values and questioning beliefs you've held your whole life because they're the ones your parents raised you with and it's about separating your own identity from the 2D version of you that your parents and friends expect you to be, and the fact all of that is beyond terrifying.

But if I say that? Nobody cares. Or if they do, it's to say its too much.

So instead, what do I say?

"Hey, wanna read a YA romance book about gay guys meeting at a rave & falling head over heels for each other, having 1 date in a cemetery and practically getting engaged after knowing each other for 3 days?"

"Hey, hey, hey, wanna read a modern, gay version of Romeo and Juliet, with a twist ending?"

Because that is what will make people click to buy the book.

But you know what else sells books? Fandoms.

Anyone who's studied marketing will tell you that the best, most effective way to sell something is to have a community force driving it. In the world of books, that community is fandoms.

It's tumblr goblins and trash pandas and trash puppies and possums. It's people whose one fear is you seeing what's in their doc files. It's people who hyperfixate on a comfort character. It's people who kin. It's people who celebrate fictional characters' birthdays. It's people who dress up as their favourite character for Halloween or cosplay, even if nobody else will get the reference. It's people who, when you ask them what their favourite book is about, break into a soul-deep cold sweat & laugh nervously because they can't describe the plot without either incriminating themselves, exposing something deeply personal or sounding like an absolute whackadoodle.

It's fandoms and stans and everyone you call cringe.

The books that do best are the ones with characters who have been adopted by fandoms. Those are the books that have people writing soliloquy after soliloquy about tiny, miniscule plot details. Those are the books that spread like wildflowers to new readers and gain a life of their own. Those are the books that get more and more traction. Those are the books that get good ratings. Those are the books that are more than a book; they're stories.

Word of mouth used to be enough. Advertising in newspapers and magazines used to be enough. Advertising on TV used to be enough. A poster or banner used to be enough. Simply being placed on a shelf in a bookstore used to be enough. But it's the 21st cursed century, and nobody uses bookstores, and nobody talks to each other anymore.

So yeah, I'll make memes about my books & characters. I'll make my own art and podt it online with tagsyou think are cringey. I'll tag my stuff with fandom-esque etiquette. Because I know - from a life of growing up online and of growing up in those fandom spaces - that the authors who have the comfiest thrones are the ones presiding over fandoms of trash puppies burning garbage in a scrapyard while howling and hissing in 7.5 dialects of trashyard all at once. It's the authors who created characters which people adopted as their blorbos and meow-meows.

So yes, I will market my books as if the characters in them are already blorbos and precious little meow-meows. Because I know I need people to adopt them as exactly that - and for others to see them as problematic faves and soft boys and wet boys and sad boys and babygirls - for my books to do well enough for me to be able to live on those earnings.

Because I don't get paid by the hour, or per word. I don't get paid a set price for every 10k words I write and edit, and I don't get paid per creation. I get paid a percentage per book sold.

And the best way to ensure books sell is to have a community talking about them online across multiple social media platforms.

If that means I have to drag my own blanket and snacks up onto the roof of a car in this scrapyard and throw a Molotov cocktail into a trash can by myself and wait for someone to come over, wondering what the light and smoke is for, then so be it. Because that is what makes people care about a character or a book enough to bother reading posts about them for long enough to get to the author's link. That is what makes people give a rats ass about anything an author creates.

If you you really hate the way authors have to market our books these days, do us a favour and do it for us, because each time our marketing gets complained about, we lose potential buyers.

It was thirty minutes into the start of the English class when Cassidy Roswell stood up from her seat, grabbed Bianca Lee by the hair, and began to slam her hear into her desk repeatedly. At the front of the room, Miss Perlie stifled a frown and continued to drone on about the meaning of the biblical illusions in Frankenstein as if anyone could hear them over Bianca’s panicked screams.  Sitting in the seat behind Bianca, Penelope King doodled idly in her journal, occasionally looking up at the whiteboard full of notes and the murder happening in front of her. It was going to be a long one, she knew, this type of blunt force trauma could take twenty minutes to make the poor girl go quiet.  Penelope didn’t know Bianca too well, they had a few classes together, been in a group project with her in eleventh grade to put on a version of Romeo and Juliet styled on the X-files (Penelope idly mused that now that Bianca was going to die only one other member of the group was still alive), but Penelope had nothing but good things to say about her. Maybe other than her screams for help were among the more annoying she had heard- Penelope knew by this point that calling for desperate help wasn’t something that someone could suppress just because they knew nobody would listen if they could help it, but it was still frustrating to hear a dying girl scream your name as her skull began to fracture. Penelope redoubled her attention to her doodle, adding another level of detail, and not really able to add to her notes much over the noise.  Bianca wasn’t the first person Penelope has seen die that day- some tenth grader had been drowning in the janitors mop bucket as she had gotten her books from her locker, but that at least had shut the victim up. Specks of blood occasionally splashed onto Penelope’s notebook over the next few minutes, thankfully as Bianca’s murmurs began to die, the front of her face caving in. Penelope wished she could wipe the blood away, but it seemed like too big a risk, and with Bianca dying soon, it seemed like this might be a somewhat uneventful death. 

              Penelope immediately cursed having the audacity to think this as Cassidy got up, pulling the limp Bianca to her feet, slid a pair of fingers into the dying girl’s mouth, and, with a single, violent motion, tore her jaw clean off. Blood sprayed, thankfully not hitting Penelope’s eyes but splattering all over her notebook, chest, and lower face, a coppery taste immediately in her mouth. It was a miracle she didn’t flinch, but the girl to her left, Francine, wasn’t so lucky, letting out a small gasp.  Cassidy turned, and Francine swore. Cassidy gently put Bianca’s jawbone down next to Penelope’s notebook, and lunged. Penelope couldn’t afford to look, acknowledging she was noticing anything was wrong would just make her next, so she merely doodled over bloodsoaked pages as she heard Francine’s muffled screams, clothes being torn, and the sound of a pencil being jabbed through soft flesh. A few short minutes later, Cassidy uttered a guttural growl that ended in a sigh.

              “I’m good. It’s over. I’m good.” She said in a raspy voice, catching her breath.  Penelope turned, seeing the girl sitting exhausted on top of Francine’s mutilated body, soaked in ichor with a wild look still in her eyes. 

              “Thank god. Christopher, go call the janitor, will you?” Miss Perlie said, and a boy in the front row nodded and walked out. Penelope turned, picked up her phone, and took a picture of her blood splattered desk- her friend Helen loved this shit, and would be so excited to see the jawbone. She texted it over, then lifted the jawbone up for Cassidy to see.

              “You sure went wild, Cass.” She joked.  Cassidy shrugged tiredly, but looked at the jaw with a hungry expression.  When coming down from a possession, it was still hard to view what one had done as anything but a pleasant indulgence. Penelope had been possessed twice- one in tenth grade, killing her chemistry teacher, and one earlier that year, killing three girls in the changeroom during gym, and was familiar enough with the feeling to try and offer Cassidy some help.

              “Don’t play with corpses, Penelope. You and Cassidy head to the showers, you’re soaked.” Miss Perlie ordered. Cass nodded slowly, looking at Penelope, no doubt thinking of the sight of Penelope killing a girl in those showers. 

              “Yeah.” She said slowly. “Let’s go.”

Juliet Rose Booker-Campbell: Juliet (Freddy Plush) is a very anxious but caring girl. She is often sheepish, and she is prone to crying at the smallest things. She tends to get overwhelmed very easily, and she looks to Caroline for comfort most of the time even if this may not seem like their dynamic at first. When she's with the group she can be playful, but she is quieter about it.

Corey Simon Bixby: Corey (Toy Bonnie Plush) puts on a more strict persona, looking up to Scott and trying to be just like how he sees him. He is the de facto leader of the group, being the oldest. He's pretty neat, keeping things as orderly as he can. Of course, he's still a kid and prone to excitement, especially about things that he enjoys. He's very aloof when you first meet him, and sometimes he may still seem distant afterwards, but if you know the signs to look for you can see when he cares.

Caroline Marie Levine-Campbell: Caroline (Chica Plush) is very talkative and she is always on the arcade machines. She's super loyal and protective underneath her energy and mischievousness, and she's calculating. She'll joke around with you and be extremely sociable upon meeting, but the whole time she will be studying you to find out if you can be truly trusted around her/her found family (with the latter being her biggest concern)...... and she is very easily distracted.

Jonah James Birdsong: Jonah (Foxy Plush) is quiet at first, sort of absent-minded. He's often in his own world, playing with Corey's fingers as he holds his hand and/or humming to himself. He's very creative! When he's next to Caroline, his energy levels will skyrocket, and it's like talking to a completely different person. He really likes reading,, he's also the "secondary leader" of the group as the second oldest, but he's much more chill with the group.

Penelope Charlotte Meyers: Penelope (Toy Foxy Plush) is shy, and seemingly stand-offish at first. She enjoys the company of her friend group, usually opting to listen instead of speaking. She used to be very excitable and friendly, but her mother slowly losing hope and working much more to support her at home has sort of drained that from her. Penelope is very caring, and when people she loves get hurt she gets extremely upset. Even though she's quiet, she's very sweet and she warms up to people she thinks she can trust very quickly.
