PM HOUSE, Thai Residence on Soi Krungthepnon, Thailand
Live like modern Thai……..this phrase gave initial idea for this home design for a family of three, two elderly parents and working daughter who spent most of her time outside.
The concept is to build a new family home on the same land where they have been living for generations. In consideration of the older generation’s lifestyle as a simple Thai way of life, the design team decided to carry on with the contemporary-style architecture to still keep up with the modern life.
The modern exterior building with three-story white geometric box has been pushed up by a shortened rule and encased the second floor with white iron battens. This part serves to keep the privacy from neighborhood, filter the direct sunlight in the afternoon as well as serves for safety reasons.
Despite the strong geometrical-shape exterior, the interior presents the open floor plan to maximize the light atmosphere and indoor ventilation. Moreover, most of the area remains open to allow the flexible layouts and the ability for the senior members to move around easily.
The main stair as well adjusted to accommodate the elderly members. The floors are made of real wood placed on steel joists with no ceilings above to create the sense of the traditional Thai house, the thoughtful design which makes the most out of the alternative sources of energy, namely light and wind.
As a result, this house requires no electric light throughout the day with the cool wind which flows through the outside corridor along the house. The woodwork furniture was brought over from the family’s old home to create the sense of continuity.
The results are very satisfactory. We strive to design a residential architecture that is suitable for the locality and region. For sustainability in the future and most importantly…. Stay well and live happy like modern Thai.

Modern Villa Captures Sea Views in Koh Samui, Thailand
Sicart & Smith Architects is an international boutique design firm in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Led by Franck Sicart and Julien Smith, two French architects, the company develops modern and tropical designs.
The concept of 180 Samui started with the careful analysis of the site: a breathtaking view of Chaweng Bay in Koh Samui, Thailand, and a massive rock that needed to be integrated in the project. The result is a horizontal design, low roof-lines and a simple material palette.
The villa is organized around an impressive pool overlooking the view, set perpendicular to the main rock and offering a dramatic feel. A three-sided infinity edge merges the pool, the sea, the sky and its reflection; it seems like the swimming pool is floating in thin air.
The villa accommodates five bedrooms with further facilities such as a spa room, a gym area and a rooftop chill-out terrace. The swimming pool is surrounded by an open kitchen and pool lounge with library and pool table.
Terrazzo and teak wood are the main materials used for the design with subtle variations and accents of black, cream, polished and raw finishes for the terrazzo.
Most of the furniture has built-in features. The sofa in the lounge is sunken into the floor so that when seated, the inhabitants have a clear view of the horizon. Beds are centered in the middle of the bedrooms to maximize sea vistas. A light touch of aquamarine has been added to complete the balance and  harmony of the project. Information provided by Sicart & Smith Architects. Photography courtesy of Johnny McGeorge & Julien Smith.

Baan Hom Din House in Phetchabun Province
10 Feb 2022
Design: TA-CHA Design
Location: Phetchabun province, Thailand
Photos: BeerSingnoi
Baan Hom Din, Thailand
When two doctors, one from Chiangmai and the other from Petchabun, decided to settle down and start their family, they looked for a land with a mountain view. They finally found one — a two-rai (3,370 sqm) piece of land, originally used as a paddy field, located in the valley between parallel ranges of the Petchabun mountains.
The two owners of Baan Hom Din have several requirements: this house should be able to cater for their uncertain work schedules; simple in style, it should also provide space for their children in the future; lastly, they hope it can forge a close relationship with the mountain ranges in the north.
So the process of functional design began. TA-CHA Design decided to elevate the house above the ground to deal with potential flooding. The owners’ desire to take the beautiful view of the mountains proved to be problematic, however; as both of them also concern about many flights of stairs which could have been a hindrance once they become older, TA-CHA Design then felt the need to adjust our original plan and instead proposed the use of ramps connecting between different areas of the house and leading to the highest, best viewing spot.
Taking the socio-architectural environment into account, we further considered about the position of the house, which is on the border of a village of local, contemporary architectural style. TA-CHA Design aimed to create harmony, yet preserving the identities of the owners who are non-local, modern, simple, and humble, and as a result finalised the design of a concrete, rectangular building complex, with each separate area under a gable roof and spreading horizontally, similar to the local Thai houses in the past.
Each building area is covered with a fiberglass roof to filter and disseminate natural light shining into the house. Inside, an additional indoor courtyard helps improve ventilation and invite natural light as well.
Wood materials were brought from nearby provinces and repurposed for doors, window casings, other pieces of furniture and built by local carpenter. So too are the bamboos which were from both Petchabun and its neighbouring provinces, making up the outer wall of the building.

Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort in Koh Samui
Contemporary Luxury Hotel Project in Thailand design by Onion

Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort
Architects: Onion
Location: Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand
Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort
Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort has a panoramic view of Chaweng Beach on Thailand’s third largest island. Ko Samui lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of Surat Thani Province.
It is known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, crystal clear sea, mountainous rainforest, luxury resorts and spas. It has a domestic and international airport. Travelers stop over at Chaweng Beach before joining the Full Moon Party on Ko Pha Ngan.
Onion started designing 138-room Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort 5 years ago in the scopes of architecture, interior, hardscape including decks and swimming pools, furniture, lighting and object designs.
In January 2018, the 52-room beachfront phase was opened for Sala’s guests. Every room has a private swimming pool and the sea view. There are 2-Bedroom Presidential Pool Villa next to the beach, framed the view by the old Banyan Trees, 4-Pool Villas and the rest of the guest rooms are in the 3-storey building.
Each room is different. On the first floor, Garden Pool Suites have the swimming pool on the rear. On the second and the third floors, Balcony Pool Suites have private swimming pool rooms on the balconies overlooking the central beachfront courtyard. The third floor also has the 1-Bedroom Pool Suites facing the ocean.
On the opposite side of the Chaweng Beach Road, the 85-room roadside phase of Sala Samui is expected to be finished in December 2018.
Onion’s design direction comes from an observation that our perceptions of the moon change every night, even if the source of light remains the same. Full moon is the time when we see the moon. Black moon is the period when we see no moon. Crescent moon is in the space in between. Everything at Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is designed to enhance a sequence of light, shade and shadow.
The design process starts by these two questions: what Sala’s guests would like to see and how they would like to live when they stay at Chaweng Beach. Onion decides to leave a maximum open air space next to the beach. This courtyard functions like a bright living room. There is no attempt to control the circulation.
Guests are free to walk around in whatever direction they want. The circle is right for this purpose. Daybeds and umbrellas around the circular swimming pools have no direction. There is no particular spot to enter the swimming pool. Guests may sit, walk and lie down at any part of its perimeter wherever the water level is for their posture.
The swimming pool’s floors gradually slant to the niche wall. Each niche fits the human scale for a reason of privacy. At night, lighting design mimics an ambience of full moon in the water. Onion also add the white swim rings, named Onion Ring, as a friendly gesture.
Nothing blocks the sea view is an exclusive experience for Sala’s guests. From the largest exterior courtyard to the smallest interior space of every room, the ocean is a most picturesque scenery. Even at the lobby, one can see the sea right away.
This is how we perceive the sense of luxury. Luxury is not about what we build; rather, it is about the space that we decided not to build. Leaving the 70×40 square meters beachfront courtyard towards the East in this sense is a luxury.
The continuous long and flat façade of the beachfront building is painted in white colour. That is to highlight the crescent shadows of the precast concrete walls. At least 7 different curves are layered from the building envelops to the interior spaces. Each curved wall separates each activity such as swimming, bathing and sleeping.
Moving shadows make each room different. A most complex shades of grey often appear in the private swimming pool rooms. These spaces are painted by the shadows of stripe and oval shading devices, overlaid on the curved wall and its crescent shadow.
Onion works with local materials and everyday life objects. What makes the ordinary things appeared special are the modes of arrangement and the inventions of new forms. Bamboo blinders are used as the lobby’s ceiling. Triangular pillows are scaled down and reshaped to fit our spaces.
The patterns of rattan lamps are redesigned so that the light of each lamps would appear different. Coconut shells are used as lamps and other decorative elements such as table legs. Onion does not design too many objects for Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort. Each object is thought of with care.
